We are following breaking news in northeast philadelphia where police are now investigating a deadly hit and run along the roosevelt boulevard. Take a look. Police say a woman was hit by a van near the corner of the boulevard and adams avenue. Nbc 10s katy zachry is live on scene. Katy, police say the victim was on the crosswalk and had the green light to cross, right . I know. So tracy, this resonates with so many people because weve all crossed streets on the green at the crosswalk unsuspecting that th someone would hit us. c police want you to be on the lookout for a white or silver mini van, potentially an older model with extensive front end damage. Witnesses told police it was speeding as it was coming north on roosevelt boulevard when it crossed on to adams avenue, slamming into a woman who was just crossing at the crosswalk. Again, witnesses told police the light was green when the woman was walking. She was thrown about 200 feet from the impact, which to give you perspective is more than half of length of a football field. They say at the time of the impact it looked like she was talking on her cell phone. The light was green. She had the right of way. This crime, police tell us, has been upgraded from a hit and run to vehicular homicide. Her body rolled on to the hood of this vehicle, she hit her head on the windshield and her body was lifted and traveled about 200 feet. And the upgrade from hit and run to vehicular homicide means the charges will be that much more severe for the person when they are caught. Now, the impact was so great when the van hit the woman that police tell us her shoes came off. They are still trying to identify her. They said she had no i. D. On her. They believe shes in late late teens, early 20s. Police are looking for the damaged mini van, white or silver older model mini van with extensive front end damage. This morning as we get new information on the man accused of killing 49 people inside a nightclub in orlando, neighbors in our area are remembering those who lost their lives. Investigators say they are reviewing reports that the gunman, omar mateen, had been to pulse nightclub several times before the attack. Theyre also looking into reports that mateen sent messages using a gay Online Dating site. We know that investigators have also started the process of recreating the crime scene in an effort to better understand exactly what happened. Here at home, nearly 2,000 people, including mayor jim kenney gathered at city hall last night to mourn the victims at a vigil. One of the 49 People Killed, 18yearold akyra murray. She was a basketball star player at west catholic prep. Her family says they went to orlando as a family to celebrate her recent high school graduation. Her former classmates, teammates and teachers at the school, completely devastated, as you can imagine. You just cant believe that this is happening. Then you start praying that maybe somebody made a mistake. One of the other teachers made a comment about how important it is for us to recognize that its not the fact that she that we dont have any more time with her, just appreciate the time we did spend with her. Yesterday at the south Jersey Shooting Club in winslow township, nbc 10 found people firing semiautomaticc sporting rifles which are legal in new jersey. Those guns are similar to the a. R. Style rifle, the shooter used in orlando. People we spoke to at the gun club are worried lawmakers will try to tighten gun rules for lawabiding owners. Im all for fixing an issue if theres an issue. I believe theres 100 an issue with the accessibility of firearms in this country to certain individuals. A sports shop next to the range sells arstyle rifles and offers classes on using them. Bike advocates will call on leaders to make it safer to cycle on city streets. Grants were requested for bike lanes throughout philadelphia. The lanes are not a done deal. The Bicycle Coalition of greater philadelphia will call on city leaders to move forward on the new lanes quickly and make them as safe as possible. Philadelphia is the largest u. S. City without separated bike lanes. Yesterday governor tom waft signed a bill into law that requires children under the age of 2 to sit in a rearfacing safety seat in the back of a car. The new law replaces one that allowed kids of all ages to sit in front facing seats anywhere in a car. The new law will take effect in two months.
