Were taking a look from the changeover to snow. Now, lets go to the pocono mountains where the changeover has happened. Snow started falling here overnight. And snow moving into the Lehigh Valley. Heres a live look at allentown. This morning, we have complete coverage of the storm. The First Alert Weather Team has the most accurate in the neighborhood. Bill henley and krystal klei, here with the storm. Were seeing the intense snow this morning. It is spreading to its south. Its already snowing in allentown. And had to run the plows, but minimal accumulation. And a much lighter snow in allentown. But this storm is just getting started. We expect it to intensify. Theres allentown, lehigh, maiden creek. To the south, richland is seeing that snow. But then farther to the south, we saw tim furlong driving in the rain. That is only rain so far. Heavy downpours moving through New Castle County and rain across south jersey. But the cold air is going to win out on this one, its slowly spreading in towards philadelphia, Delaware County starting to show that cold air making progress. Storm force 10 is up and running. You can see it sweeping the area showing the echoes that extended the south with just rain. Farther to the south, take a look, thunderstorm activity, way to the south. You cant rule out thunder and lightning in our area. But the worst of it is going to be the snow. Were watching the temperatures fall. 33 degrees in Lehigh Valley, 35, its cold enough for snow in the suburbs. But its just rain so far with temperature information the 40s for delaware, south jersey and philadelphia. But these numbers will drop below freezing. And that will likely happen during the morning commute. Thats where we see the snow accumulating. And the rain thats happening, once it changes from snow into philadelphia, thats it. Were looking at more snow accumulating. The wind has to shift for this to happen. Were seeing winds out of the east at 14 miles an hour in wildwood. Look at the northerly winds bringing colder air out of the west. Weve got a lot more storm ahead. This is what were expecting for the morning rush, between 6 00 and 8 00 this morning. Thats where we see the heaviest snow. Thundersnow, we saw those storms to its south. That is possible. And the visibility is coming down making travel difficult with visibility down to a quarter mile or less with heavier snow. And snowcovered roads, thats going to happen not immediately, but as we saw in allentown, were already getting accumulations. And Jessica Boyingtons department, shes got the latest from the first alert traffic center. Right. I have the hard job right now. Were watching allentown. Snow starting to accumulate there. 78 around route 100. You can definitely see snow on the roads here. Looks like its covered with rain water in earlier. But you can see when dcars move through, they look single file. Starting to see some snow in some spots. Watching 95 as well. 14minute drive times from the southbound side from woodhaven to the vine. And a crash around cottman avenue. We at least know its there. Only have a shoulder blocked or so. Watching route 30, Haddon Heights new jersey, looks good so far. No Big Properties to report. Out in lower merion, a vehicle fire reported here, rock hill road around conshohocken state road. Meanwhile, Pamela Osborne is live for us in allentown. Pam, tell us how allentown is looking at 4 30 in the morning. Reporter you can see its already coming down. Not a huge amount, bud a steady amount. Weve seen this from about quakertown on the northeast extension. We actually had to drop our speed about 35 miles per hour. Take a look, theres this much snow on the ground. Youve seen a plow go through. Weve seen several plows going through. We were actually coming up this way to get in place for this live shots. And one of though trucks that you see with the proud in front of it has actually started fish tailing on the road. That gives you an idea of how slippery things are. Jessica were talking about tracks in the roads. Weve seen some places where there are tracks that you can follow along. Still drivers out here this morning, taking things incorrectly slow as it should be because as mentioned there are snowy conditions on the roadway this morning. I would say at this point, maybe we have about half an inch of snow on the ground, thats actually sticking right now. But it is certainly is causing difficulty for drivers even this early in the morning. Reporting liven in allentown, Pamela Osborne. We take you to Chester County now, nbc10s katy zachry is live in westchester. Katy, whats it like there . Reporter tracy, we dont have snow right now like pam does but we have sleet here in westchester. Were in the city limits just off route 3. You can tell from the situation here, very few cars on the road. A lot of people, theyve already had work called off. Were waiting to hear if westchester schools have been called off, but they havent reported to our system. Basically people are staying inside. The vehicles that were seeing are fuelling up at nearby gas stations. A lot of plows as pam was saying, pickup trucks with plows on the front because they know theyll be extremely busy. Temperatures hovering in the midst to higher 30s. It is rapidly dropping and we can feel it as evidenced by the sleet. We had rain, its now sleet, and maybe well have snow. You can see trucking moving by with hazards flashing, definitely seeing snow tracks on the road surfaces there, were seeing accumulation in some areas for sure. Also watching 95, an accident clearing on the southbound side, around cottman avenue. Either way, were checking on the drive times. Roads are still wet from the vine street expressway. Slippery reports out in West Pottsgrove and grosstown road. Watch for that. And in new jersey, admiral wilson boulevard. The toll plaza, no problems getting up over the bridge in philadelphia as well. With the weather changing throughout the morning, well drop the speeds down to 35 miles per hour. Well update you on this and more on snowy spots when i come back. Now, your nbc10 first alert weather. One of those snowy spots is easton, pennsylvania. A little bit of rain after midnight. Now its all snow. And accumulated snow as the temperatures have really plummeted. A strong wind coming out of the north. Thats just rain falling at philadelphia international. There are going to be all sorts of delays, already many cancellations box of the storm. And we will, over the next couple of hours, see that rain change from rain to snow. But maybe a brief period of sleet. In fact, thats what katy zachry is reporting in westchester. You see the darker echoes on the radar. Yes, its easier to pick up sleet than snow. That area of sleet, its part of a changeover from rain to snow. Thats happening. The snow is whats going to be falling in the short term as the snow and colder air sweeps into Chester County and bucks county. Its snowing in pottstown, bucks, and reading. And it will be reaching into burlington county. So much, its been all snow. And heavier totals expected in the trenton area, snow to move out. And this system comes to an end through the Lehigh Valley and to the west. In fact, far enough west, to the tail end of this system its just moving towards portions of leesburg, dordz the d. C. Area, theyre only getting rain this morning. Still a lot more of the storm ahead and plenty of accumulation once the temperatures drop. Right now, its 41 degrees in philadelphia. Thats why its all snow. No problem in delaware or south jersey or the shore so far. Thats why its too warm. The numbers are falling. Some of the suburbs are getting closer to the freezing mark. 34 in melvern, this is a little warm for accumulation. So, even though it will be changing over to snow, with these warmer temperatures, its going to take some time before it starts to accumulate. But it will be happening. The ground will be cooling down just after the air cools down. Still warm from yesterday. We will be seeing accumulation in all of these areas. Heres your hourbyhour forecast with that colder air coming in at 5 00 this morning. The snow electrical extending from trenton through philadelphia and into northern New Castle County and delaware. And it reaches into new jersey. Thats that warm air that doesnt want to leave. But it will be. At 6 30 in the morning, watch agency the colder air sweeps across the shore and the snow intensifies. At the 9 00 hour, it starts to taper off for at least areas of suburbs and Lehigh Valley. Its not going to be an allday snowstorm, but the worst of it is this morning. The snow line is dropping from 6 00 this morning. And the snow is expects to intensify. This storm will be getting stronger than it is right now between 6 00 and 8 00 this morning. Then a change to snow to the south across delaware and south jersey between 7 00 and 9 00, and the snow will exit the area from west to east, starting at 10 00. By 1 00 this afternoon it is all gone. Reporter yeah, heading to the Delaware River bridge in about a mile or so here. You see its rain. Its not sleet, but pure rain. Deldot, with the warm day yesterday, deldot had to wait a little bit because the road temperatures have been very warm. But like were been hearing, the temperatures are going to keep falling. Its much colder than it has been. The conditions are ripening for the snow thats about to fall on the roads. Be very careful. Were going over the delaware memorial bridge. Pence grove, carneysville. Up the east side on the Delaware River on the new jersey side, were going to see what its like over there. At this point in northern delaware, it is just rain. But if you go out, be very careful, is sounds like its going to be quick and the snow is going to come down hard and visibility is not going to be too peachy either. Be careful on the roads, back to you. Some ponding on the roads but other areas have ice and snow on the roads. Lets get you updated on the road conditions. First alert traffic reporter Jessica Boyington looking at route 22. Right. Were watching around allentown and Lehigh Valley for snowfall. Route 22, just around 15th street. You definitely see the tracks on the roads right now. Cars are actually single file and driving slow through that area. You can see getting on and off the ramps here as well. Definitely will provide a slippery commute as well for drivers. Watching those areas. Thats where were seeing the snow for now. Lower merion watching a vehicle fire. Around conshohocken state road. This area looking better. Especially suggesting rain right now. Watching the vine street expressway, were open here. Were okay for right now, in the morning, in between broad and schuylkill, were open there, watching route 70 in cherry hill, new jersey, along kings highway. You can see roads are just wet which still could be a problem. You want to take your time, especially with the falling temperatures, youll see slippery spots there. On and off ramps are the trouble spots and well have more in ten minutes. Jessica, about nine minutes before 5 00 a. M. , we hurts krystal talk about the oneday storm. Lets check on the timing, bill henley has that. Its going to be a one morning storm. Its going to be here this morning and gone this afternoon. Its hard to believe that this is going to be such a fastmover that well actually see sunshine. This is camelback mountain. Its been steady snow there. This has been the heaviest snow and spread to get south. Look at it coming down in allentown. Thats intensified in just the last half hour. Meantime, to the south, the shore, ocean city, just seeing rain. Now, theres a chance along high tide later this morning, well see minor flooding with the winds coming off the ocean. Its only going to be rain until later this morning and eventually cold air makes it even to the shore. Theres the rain off the atlantic city, gloucester, atlantic county, cumberland, only seeing rain. You heard tim furlong talking about the heavier rain coming down in delaware. There it is showing up on the radar. That is heavy rainfall from wilmington to the south. The radar is seeing a little farther up into the atmosphere where it starts off as snow. Its still falling into warmer air at the surface. Even though its showing here, its melting on the way down and becoming rain. That changes as the temperature gets colder in wilmington and across the rest of the area. Once it becomes cold enough, its going to be all snow. Its showing the snow starting to move above philadelphia. It will be coming down to the ground. Were seeing sleet mixed into westchester and lower montgomery and bucks county. Its all snow for reading and allentown. This is what it looks like from the live radar from allentown. That is accumulating snow. Once is schools down and going down rapidly, we will see it starts to accumulate and continue to accumulate until this still ends later this morning. Not cold at all. 40 degrees in delaware. 41 right now in philadelphia, and 46 in south jersey so the cold air is working if in from the north and west. Its got a long way to go before we start to see snow in south jersey. Voorhees, in the low 40s. Princeton above freezing at 34 degrees. Heres how it looks, snow potential, 5 00, 2 inches possible in pottstown and westchester. Well see some accumulations that hour. Minimal accumulations in philadelphia. By 5 00, its unlikely as were getting close to 5 00, 2 inches by 7 00. If youre a little bit ahead of schedule, this computer model says 2 inches in philadelphia by 7 00, possibly up to 4 inches at 9 00, its that 7 00 to 9 00 time period that looks like the heaviest snow in the area. Of course that is time for the morning commute. Take a look at snow totals, what to expect once the whole thing is this morning coming up in a few minutes. Hard to believe in the 60s yesterday. Close to 71 in some places. Very warm yesterday and today cold and snow. This weather roller coaster could leave you paying more for produce at the grocery store. The wild swings between cold and warm weather have affected crops at weavers way farm in germantown. It depends on cold snaps to keep pests in check. In the winter time, we rely on a couple of periods of really cold temperatures. Id like to see a couple of real nice cold spells. Continued mild weather this winter could lead to pest infestation. The pink, 4 to 8 inches through philadelphia, into northern parts of camden and gloucester county. Up to 2 inches possible if parts of new jersey and northern delaware. A lot of areas in delaware actually going to miss out with only a coating to two inches of snow. That is more on grassy surfaces. The money will be split among the families of the seven People Killed and 12 people injured in the june 2013 collapse. The attorneys called it the largest settlement in pennsylvania history. Penn state has filed new court papers appealing a multimilliondollar settlement for a former assistant coach. The school wants mcquearys settlement set aside and a new trial date set.
