At the vine street expressway and the schuylkill. Right now, Hurricane Matthew is churning off the treasured coast of florida. Hundreds of thousands of people are boarded up inside their homes or left to take shelter elsewhere. Hurricane matthew has weakened slightly to a category 3 storm but the powerful storm, howling winds and driving rain continue to pummel the coast with its strongest winds of 120 miles an hour just offshore. First alert meteorologist erika martin says matthew is expected to make landfall sometime today. The latest numbers say about 100,000 customers are long the southeast coast of florida are waking up without power. This transformer in ft. Ive never seen anything like this, ever. This is getting bad. Storm surges are likefully to cause massive coastal flooding, most heeding the mandatory evacuations and leaving town. Its a virtual ghosttown inside the Orlando International airport. Look at these pictures tweeted out by southwest airlines. Ticket counters covered in c plastic, eerily empty halls. Orlando international closed last night at 8 00. It is expected to be open by tomorrow. Airports are closed in ft. Lauderdale and miami. Florida travelers got plenty of warning to get out. Nbc 10 was there as a few arrived in philadelphia. Matt delucia is live at philly international. While there arent any flights this morning from florida, planes are due in some other southern states, right . Thats right, tracy and vai. You have a lot of people who tried to fly out yesterday. Here at the airport this morning, you still see operations here. Again, matthew isnt really going to affect our area. Flights are going in and out of our area into pretty much everywhere except for those destinations in florida, because, of course, those airports are shut down at this point. You also have a lot of people who are driving out of florida. A few lucky ones did get flights before the airports closed. Take a look at this terminal, the picture from orlando. Miami flights stopped around noon yesterday, a virtual ghosttown in that airport. The terminal is empty, no planes on the runways. Orlando stopped operations at 8 00 last night. More than a thousand flights have been canceled as Hurricane Matthew makes its way through florida right now. Orlando for one, not expecting to resume flight schedules until tomorrow. Miami, hoping to gradually resume flights today. Now, the cancellations force many travelers to change their plans and residents to escape the area. We spoke with a couple people who got out just in time. People from our area, like the nurse who cut their conference short. It was crazy. I think everyone was getting way ahead of their flights. I think you got there four hours early. Yes. They wouldnt let you in yet through the gates. And we have people still left behind. We were on three separate flights. I want to show you this map here that shows the flights that are in the air right now. You see all the planes, these symbols around the country. Look over in florida. This area down here. c it is pretty much empty because of all those airports that are shut down. You have miami and orlando especially up there, jacksonville as well. You see, there are flights around the gulf of mexico that are still up there. Pretty much empty, right around where that hurricane is right now. So, again, this is causing a lot of headaches for travelers throughout the florida area right now. Live at Philadelphia International airport, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. 4 35. New this morning, First Responders from philadelphia are headed to florida in what could be a disaster situation with Hurricane Matthew. Nbc 10 was in northeast philadelphia last night as fire crews pack up to head south. Members of Pennsylvania Task force one will help crews in florida with damage caused by matthew. Were preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. Were very proud and honored to be going and helping out with this incident although we hope that it will sort of make a glancing blow and it wont be as bad as some of the projections indicate. The fire commissioner says the task force is headed to florida but could redeploy northward as the hurricane moves. Ahead in just a few minutes, well take you live to florida as conditions continue to deteriorate. At 5 00 a. Its going to be happening in neighborhoods all throughout the city and some of the surrounding neighborhoods as well. Unity in the community has teamed it up with for our future for a nonpartisan Voter Registration event, except this one may be quite different than what youre used to seeing. At 11 00 saturday morning, local deejays will hit the streets of west philly, north philly, as well as bucks county. They willc be spinning records and helping to draw people out. While people are out, theyll be hoping to get people to register to vote. I talked to organizers about this unique approach. So being actually on the ground talking about whats going on, engaging them is key. A lot of times when you talk about voting. Youre sitting at a table, signing people up. This is boring. When youre playing music and having volunteers going up to cars and walking up to people, saying are you registered to vote . Hearing the music, being involved and engaged, it takes on a new idea. Theyll also be giving away prizes as well. There are power house tickets as well as sixer tickets up for grabs as well. If you look at the bottom of your screen, youll see your local neighborhood forecast. Otherwise, philadelphia, pretty pleasant. Expected High Temperatures, mainly in the mid to upper 70s. Bethlehem, your expected High Temperature 78 degrees. Easton also seeing upper 70s. Lehigh valley seeing nice conditions. Notice we do have extra clouds in the forecast here. And thats because we do have some developing clouds from the south towards the north. Ill get to that in just one moment in our hour by hour forecast. c phoenixville, High Temperatures in the low to mid70s. I do think well see a lot of 70s. Mount airy, 74 degrees. Glassboro, 1 degree cooler, averaging 73 degrees. New jersey looking good for today. Keep in mine we still have a High Pressure system that is the main weathermaker but we do have a change in the forecast. Ill get to that in just one moment. Atlantic city, 70 for you and galloway, your expected High Temperature 71 degrees. Dover, low 70s and wilmington, a little bit warmer at 74 degrees. Here is our setup right now. Satellite and radar image. Notice we are getting moisture moving up from the south towards the north. Recommend inabilities are really Hurricane Matthew is massive. The cloud field, the rain bands as well. Starting to move northward there. Heres this cold front weve been talking about all week. All of this moisture will continue to work its way northward before that frontal boundary actually gets here. Theyll meet somewhere around the new jersey shoreline and i do think we do have the threat of isolated thunderstorms for the shoreline by tomorrow afternoon. So here is our hour by hour forecast. Starting this at 4 30 a. M. And getting this going, notice those clouds already starting to develop. Were picking up on some greens here, denoting the potential for showers. I do think thats midleft moisture. Keep in mind, by tomorrow, more clouds develop from the south. Your frontal boundary dipping on down. We have the threat of showers by tomorrow afternoon. Death and devastation is what we remain in Hurricane Matthews wake. This is the grim scene in haiti. We take a closer look the toll the storm has taken on the caribbean. Quarter to 5 00 this friday morning. Right now, Hurricane Matthew is churning off the south florida coast moving northward. Rain should stop in Palm Beach County soon. So you can see the storm moving up here on the radar. Its a category 3 storm right now. That means 120 mileperhour sustained winds with a lot of rain. Millions of people had to evacuate their homes ahead of Hurricane Matthew. First alert meteorologist erika martin tells us the storm could be making landfall today. Jay gray is live in Daytona Beach. Good morning, jay. Hey, good morning, tracy, vai. I want to give you a realtime look at these conditions that are continuing to fall off here. Strong, gusting winds, sheets of rain, this surf continues to grow as well pouring over the beach front here. And consider that were still on the front edge of this. Were going to see the worst of this in the next several hours here in Daytona Beach. This wind is just going to build. So is the rain. Thats going to cause serious issues here. The good news is, a lot of people have moved to Higher Ground here and up and down the strike point or the strike zone rather. There are some and we talked to them yesterday who have decided to ride this thing out. Well be the time has come to do that. Theyre secured. A peek out on the streets. You dont see anyone at this point including emergency personnel. Thats the good news. It looks like people are paying attention to whats going on here. But, again, this is just the early stages of whats going to be a very rough 24 to 48 hours here as this storm continues to move up the coastline, georgia in play as well as the carolinas. And there is the chance this thing could loop around. c it would be weaker but would cause more problems again here early next week. Thats the latest live in Daytona Beach. Guys, back to you. Thanks so much. Hurricane matthew barreled through haiti. This morning, were getting a clearer picture of the devastation there. Bodies started to wash up as waters receded. You can see in this video, one boy holing his nose from the stench there, at least 283 people died in just one part of haiti southwest, the area that bore the brunt of the storm. Matthew is the first category 4 storm to hit haiti in more than a century. A look from above now, in cuba, showing the scale of destruction there. You can see a collapsed bridge over a swollen river and extensive damage to homes, many without roofs. Matthew moved through there on monday. No deaths have been reported in cuba. In the bahamas, the rain has finally subsided after hours and hours of pounding rain and wind. There are trees down, power poles down, complete roads washed away. Some people still trapped in their homes. Brand new forecast information comes out right at 5 00 a. M. Stay with nbc 10 news all morning long. This new Jersey Transit train that crashed into the hoboken station is finally out of the way. Federal investigators say the train was going 21 miles per hour, twice the speed limit when it crashed last week. Authorities also say data recordings show the engineer hit the emergency brake less than a second before the crash. The accident killed one woman and injured more than 100 other people. A thousand times thank you for the incredible amount of energy you put into our little family. I will live you forever, big kiss. The husband of the woman killed in the crash wrote those words and a family friend read them during a vigil in hoboken last night. The victim was hit byc falling debris while standing on the stations platform. Family and friends lit candles and said prayers in her memory. New Jersey Transit is making some changes to ensure passengers safety following that deadly accident. The agency says a conductor must oversee the trains engineer as the trains pull into the final station. That includes the hoboken station and the Atlantic City station. Passengers who take the train to ac are feeling some relief. Trains go back and forth all the time, and its not really ever happened that much. I feel safe but i think its a great idea. Back to the hoboken crash, federal investigators say it could take a year or longer to complete a final report on what caused that crash. Ten minutes before 5 00 a. M. Yesterday morning we were seeing upper 30s and low 40s. The good news is, a warmer day on tap, feeling more comfortable. In fact, temperatures for today expected to top out in the mid to upper 70s. So some good news there. c satellite and radar image, very interesting. Notice yesterday we didnt have much going on. Even though we are under the influence of a High Pressure system, notice were seeing green working their way in from the south. Remnants, the outer bands of Hurricane Matthew, also approaching the midatlantic region. And just to the northwest, we also have frontal boundary sliding on down. Those two will meet somewhere around the jersey shore line. I expect showers in the forecast by tomorrow, by 1 00 p. M. Ill time it out for you hour by hour. Hurricane matthew, this is your fourhour loop. Currently maximum sustained winds at 125 miles per hour. Hurricane nicole is at a category 2. Theres a lot of activity going on in the atlantic. Notice here were seeing a massive system working its way across florida, up the eastern seaboard up through georgia and into south carolina. Landfall isnt expected for foot four to five hours. I really want to stress that landfall is when the eye actually makes landfall. Right now were just seeing the periphery. Thats already causing these watches and warnings to be issued up and down the eastern southeastern seaboard, really, through charleston, were seeing a Tropical Storm warning issued until monday morning. So the deal is this, that conditions right now arent even as bad as theyre about to get and hour by hour forecast, picking up on some showers, moving in from the south. What were going to see would be remnants of that moisture moving northward. Were seeing a front moving down. Thankfully all were getting is heavy downpours and a kickup by those winds, saturday into sunday. Thats for us. Four to five hours before landfall. Thats right. The economics of Hurricane Matthew. Today in north jersey, more testimony is expected in the bridgegate trial following a day of apparent vindication for governor Chris Christie. Testimony from Christina Renna seemed to clear him in the gridlock scheme. Yesterday in court, renna said she used a poor choice of words when she texted that the governor lied about his staff not knowing about the lane closures in 2013. Renna did point finger at codefendant Bridget Kelly for participating in the caper, saying they cried together when an email linked to the plot came out. That day was a very, very hurtful day for her. And she said obviously one of the worst days of her life. Kelly and codefendant bill baroni are accused of arranging Washington Bridge to punish ft. Lees mayor for not backing governor Chris Christies reelection bid. Happening today, officers with the Camden County Police Officer will sit down to chat with community members. And as we go ahead and take a look at Hurricane Matthew right now, as it continues to work its way towards the floridian seacoast floridian coast, were starting to see it get a lot more active, currently a category 3. Hurricane matthew right now, ahead to tennessee to move towards florida and move its way across georgia and south carolina, eventually pushing offshore. How will it affect us here. Of course it looks like that moisture will continue to work its way northward. Were tracking a cold front that will continue to work its way from the northwest to the southeast.
