All told, some 145,000 people from all ages and backgrounds are expected to get their hands dirty for a good cause. Hands on Service Projects, trainings, workshops, kids carnivals. Dr. King is a huge part of that legacy for us today just as much as it was during his lifetime. Theres a number of family oriented activities for kids who are off from school today. Dr. King and the dream are remembered today in our nations capital. We shall overcome the annual ceremony held a short time ago at the national mall. This is the fifth year for the event. Organizers say its a chance to reflect on the principles dr. King lived and say people need to commit to do more every day and not just once a year. Inspirational speakers took to the stage today for the Martin Luther king jr. Day breakfast. National Action Network hosted the event in d. C. Officers were called to willing boro, not far from the police building, and there was a man in the street suffering from a gunshot without. We dont know the condition and there are no suspects. Philadelphia police look for the gunman who shot a cab driver. The driver is in critical condition. He was shot more than a dozen times. This is West Philadelphia early yesterday. He was found lying on the sidewalk along brooklyn street. Police say the driver called in dispatch to cancel a ride before the gunfire broke out. Police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a 16yearold boy in his fathers workplace in West Philadelphia. Police were called to the store on north 52nd street yesterday afternoon. Family members said he did homework in the store where his dad worked. His father discovered his son on the floor of the store with a gunshot woun to td to the head. The family is heart broken. If they wanted to take something, take something and leave him alone. Why take him . The family says he just moved to philadelphia from jamaica for a better education. Police are looking at surveillance pictures from the store as part of the investigation. Today, montgomery county, loved ones attend a service for a murdered teenager, grace, the family is invited to pay respects and share memories of the 14yearold who police say she was abused before being killed. Canine for life need volunteers to participate in the puppy raising program. This guy is from canine partners for life, one of the volunteers is here, and training a 15 week old yellow lab, and as sis, a service dog. Thank you for being here today. Canine partners trains dogs for people with a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities so anything, like, spina bifida, trouble walking or using limbs, our dogs are able to retrieve items, press elevator butt tops, things like that. Talk about the jobs of the volunteers. To love our puppies first of all, but we take them through the basic obedience training. We get them at eight weeks old. We do housebreaking, teach them to sit, walk nice on a leash, heel, and do basic commands, and then they are with us for approximately a year, and then they go off to college, and we have professional trainers then, that finish their skills. We dont teach them skills they need, but we have to fill them with plenty of love every place we go. Like kids, then, send off to college. College. And hope you raised them right . Thats right. Tell us about the twos. This is alice, a finished product, right, and this is a few months . Just starting. Started at eight weeks old, so hes about seven weeks into it. Tell us about the best part of being involved in this program. I personally think the best part is when the dogs go through two years of training and matched to a recipient that has a disability and you get to see how much that dog enhances that persons life and how much independence it gives that person and they are able to go on and live a normal life like everybody else can. And they become really inseparable, arent they . With them 24 7, with them everywhere you go. Your little guy there, hes hes thinking this is overrated. Yeah. Well, they are just terrific.
