In wilmington as we look at the home of the wilmington blue rocks, but its a much different story here here is a live look at washington, d. C. , where the snow is coming down in the nations capital. President s day is a federal holiday. The streets here in st. Mary county, maryland. See the snow there on the roads following a plow truck on its way to salt roads and a live look now at the radar shows where some of the heaviest snow is falling, and we could see some problems a little later on when the snow changes to sleet and then, of course, freezing rain. We have Live Team Coverage of this winter storm affecting our area. Lets begin with nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. This is an unusual type of storm that is developing here. First of all, the greatest amounts of snow are going to be in the southern portions of our area. We already have a few inches in some places, cape may from the marquee to lafayette. You can see the lens and the temperatures are below freezing and the snow is changing character a little bit and it is very wet snow. We have snow that will be moving through the area today and if its not snowing where we are now it will be as we go through the afternoon and it also will change over to sleet and freezing rain over a portion of the area, at least and everybody will see at least some heavy rain during the day on tuesday. As well, we have the first alert out through both days and the area getting hit the hardest and Sussex County, delaware and the southern point in our area and winter storm warning at 7 00 tonight and four to eight inches of snow and the rest of the area has Winter Weather advisories and most of the region until 10 00 tonight up toward the Lehigh Valley in poconos and less serious conditions and less snow accumulation and now the longer it takes for this to spread up to the north, the longer its going to take for the snow to change over to rain in the southern portions of our area and it is starting to spread to the north, as you can see coming up through New Castle County, delaware and into salem county, new jersey and well be getting into philadelphia within the next hour and its already starting to change over in Cape May County as you saw on the lens of the camera there and from washington, d. C. , southward, thats where theyre getting hit hard if you extrapolate that into southern delaware, thats where theyre going to be getting the greatest amounts of accumulation. The visibleit tells us how the snow is and we dont have anything from philadelphia northward, but even in wilmington, were starting to see some snow, getting heavier snow in dover and millville. Pretty heavy snow in Atlantic City right now and so parts of our area are already getting socked with this. The temperatures, of course, are going to be critical and theyre way below freezing even in southern portions of our area, so it will take a while for the warming to continue this is the 32 degree line in red as we go through the noon hour. So wherever it is north of that line it is sticking. In other parts of the area and southern parts it will start melting a little bit more and then here comes the rain. Theres 2 00. Theres 4 00 and it may be some of the heaviest snow in and around the philadelphia area and points to the north while theyre getting significant rain farther to the south and by 6 00, that 32degree line is already all of the way up to the Lehigh Valley. So you can see some big changes during the day. More on the hour by hour forecast and county by county in just a few minutes. Glenn, well see you then. Penndot is briefing the media right now. It looks like hes wrapping things up and were getting briefed on penndot on whats going on with the winter storm and the trucks and how theyre treating the roads and our Live Team Coverage continues with Bureau Reporter Ted Greenberg and hes in Cape May County. How are you doing . It looks like its snowing out there. You heard glenn talk about the snow in cape may. I think it got it also looks like the snowflakes have gotten bigger as they come down. Its been snowing here in cape may for several hours now and were out on the washington street mall, and there are quite a few people here shopping this morning. Its a picturesque scene and especially pretty in the snow. You take a look at how much snow we have. About an inch, you can see has accumulated right here and it continues to fall. We found the garden state parkway and most main roads to be wet this morning, but mostly clear. However, many side streets are snow covered and we have video of that and Cape May County road crews started their shift at 5 00 this morning and 12 trucks are out salting and 212 miles of county road. Ive had so many customers this morning that he just took over, took the broom and took the shovel and said hey, let me do this for you. You have a lot of people in your store. Youre very lucky. I am, but its cape may and everyone is happy and just take care of each other. Now for a check on the roads with jessica boyington. They look different than earlier when we were on the air. They do. Parts of the jersey shore and parts of new jersey are starting to see snow for sure. You can see that behind me around route 73 and the Atlantic City expressway and flakes falling here and not a huge accumulation on any of the roadways or at least at this point, you can see a little bit into the shoulder, but again, traffic moving along nicely and weve not had any sort of rush hour this morning because a lot of people are off of school and off of work. This is on walnut street between south 21st street and 22nd street. You cant see it falling there yet and we dont have volume or backup if youre headed to the schuylkill or 95. Schuylkill, from the expressway, a 13minute drive time and no big deal for the drive time and we do have construction headed southbound which is why youre seeing a drive time. Now we dont have any significant delays for Philadelphia International airport and you can see its a different story in newark. Cancellations leaving philly so far from the airport have been thick and headed to philly has been eight so far. Definitely head when you head out the door. Check that American Airlines have asked customers to change their travel plans. It was between yesterday and today. Definitely check before you go. Vai . Good advice. Thank you, jessica. Some this afternoon and some this evening and everybody gets at least a period of heavy rain on tuesday along with way warmer temperatu temperatures. The winter storm warning only for Sussex County, del care, delaware, Cape May County part of the Winter Weather advisory because its changing to rain and that will limit the total snowfall here, but central delaware, extreme south jersey will get more snow than Northern Areas and the Winter Weather advisory until 10 00 there and up toward the poconos until 1 00 a. Cape may county courthouse getting close, but woodbine is 26 and they may get freezing rain for at least an hour or so and then as we go into atlanta county, the inland areas are much colder and again, a little bit of freezing rain after the snow, but close to the coast, its already getting close to the freezing mark and that would lead to just wet roads. You can see the snow gradually coming up to the north. Theyve been hit pretty hard in washington, d.
