As i mentioned this is a brief period of heavier snowfall with limited visibility as it moves through the area and a quick gusting of snow. Were not going to see a lot of snow but you could run into more of these during the day. Theyre clearing philadelphia. The steadiest snow just moving out of Burlington County in new jersey. And its starting to taper off in trenton, robbinsville seeing one of those brief squalls. Brief limited visibility and that may not be the end. Look at this next line moving through through the pocono mountains. Through it all a cold wind blowing. Look at the wind. 24 miles an hour in philadelphia. Thats going to keep windchills in the teens. Clouds, sunshine and a windy day today. 24 degrees right now. Thats not much warmer than it was first thing this morning. Winds out of the westnorthwest at 24 miles an hour giving us a windchill right now of 8 degrees. And, keith, its going to get colder. Ive got the sevenday forecast when i come back. Bill, i dont like the sound of that, but thank you. Visibility if you were on the roads this morning was tough for drivers. Lets get a check on the roads now with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. Jessica, what are you seeing out there . Were definitely seeing improvements, keith. Thats definitely good news to start with, but we have an accident scene right now on the schuylkill expressway near gladwyne. The good thing is were coming down with the drive times and accident scene is on the shoulder. We have a 35minute drive time. A few moments ago it was 55 minutes headed westbound to the blue route, average speeds in the 20s. We see some slowdowns on the schuylkill expressway. 422 earlier was hit with a lot of snow showers and had big delays this morning just baa because of that. Eastbound were back to normal 8 minute trip, speeds back up there into the 60s. Now there is an accident scene that just popped up out in willow grove on welsh road. There is Police Activity there. They are directing traffic around the scene. The area bridges are back to normal. What i mean by that is earlier this week there were a lot of speed restrictions because of icy conditions. No speed restrictions right now but burlington has alternating lanes. Keith. Jessica, thank you. Health investigators in Montgomery County still dont know what caused more than 100 students to get sick at Ursinus College. And now weve learned more students and even faculty members came down with the stomach illness overnight. Nbc 10s drew smith is following the new developments live in collegeville. Drew, what are you learned . Reporter keith, good morning. We dont have exact numbers from the college but the dean did tell me more students asked for medical help overnight into this morning. Thats in addition to the 100 students who already suffered through this. Right now classes are in session here. And in these buildings in addition to the students and the professors youll also find some cleaning crews. The Ursinus College Emergency Medical Transport stood at the ready again this morning as the students who could make it out came to get breakfast in an Athletic Center lobby. Its hard to go anywhere like really get a lot of stuff done because youre so worried about getting sick or throwing up. Reporter wawa provided this food because the cafeterias are still sealed off. Crews are back out along with the Health Department today hoping to wipe out any possible virus. Its basically all of our buildings. Our biggest effort so far has been fitness center, dining facilities, the Wellness Center overnight. Reporter with Campus Food Services out of commission, neighborhood shops are helping out. At the collegeville italian bakery it means putting together more than 600 sandwiches for the students. Well, we are a close knit family. You know, collegeville is a small town. We all come together to help each other. Reporter the students who can keep down a meal are thankful, but they hope this illness will stop spreading today. It has not been a fun experience. Its been a little bit messy at times. But thats how sicknesses are. Reporter were told these symptoms can last anywhere from 12 to 24 hours on average here though the school is hoping that the worst of this is now behind them. I do have a call into the Montgomery County Health Department to figure out where they are on figuring out where this all started. Well let you know as soon as we hear back from them. Live in collegeville, drew smith, nbc 10 news. Drew, thank you. For the second time this week someone attacked a cab driver in philadelphia. Police are looking for the person who stabbed this cab driver while he was on the job in center city overnight. He escaped with a couple of wounds to his hand, he was just showing it to you. Police say this could have ended much worse. Heres what happened, the cab driver picked up a guy just before midnight at fourth and south. They went a couple blocks to fourth and kathrine when the passenger said he had a gun and demanded the cabbies money. Then there was a struggle. The attack on me, give me money, give me money, so after that he put the knife on my neck. So hold the knife and struggling and then cut my hand. The cabbie drove himself to the hospital for treatment. Meanwhile the robber got away with 70 of the cab drivers money. Early saturday morning a passenger shot alex desin while he was on duty in his cab. He picked up two men and a woman in the citys point breeze section. One of the men sat in the seat next to him, something he doesnt usually allow. Then the passenger shot him. Destin crashed into parked cars, at this point there appears to be no connection between these two attacks. Police in bucks county are investigating a deadly crash. Nbc 10 was along route 13 in Bristol Township around 3 00 this morning. Authorities tell us a pickup truck rolled over several times and the driver was killed. Route 13 was blocked off at otter street while police continued their investigation. And a driver crashed a car into a wellknown concert venue overnight. The mazda sedan hit the north side of the fillmore at franklin avenue and east allen street. Rescuers took one woman to the hospital. One of the buildings exit doors was damaged. Theres no word on what caused that crash. This morning we have a potential admission now from lesean mccoy caught on video. Its hard to hear so listen closely. One more time, i apologize he apparently says i made a mistake. The man who shot this video says he saw mccoy and his crew at misconduct tavern in center city last night. Its the first public sighting of the former eagles running back since an alleged nightclub assault on two offduty Philadelphia Police officers. He says he asked mccoy about the incident over the weekend. Said that he made a mistake and hes looking forward to having his say. Sources close to the investigation tell us the timeline on possible charges is now shifted as prosecutors work to build a case. The offduty officers are still in the hospital with broken bones and cuts that required stitches. Take a look at this new video from a robbery at a 7eleven in philadelphias bustleton section. Police say on december 17th this man asked a cashier to use the restroom. Well, the cashier says no, the guy leaves. But then he comes back five minutes later armed with a gun. He took money from the register and a book of lottery tickets. The fbi is now joining the search for a missing teenage boy from chester county. Police in West Whiteland township say John Thomas Parker walked away from the learning center. Heres a surveillance photo from yesterday when the 14yearold was last seen leaving the facility. Police say parker may have gone to a nearby train station to leave the area. Also happening today in philadelphia, cab drivers will again protest Ride Hailing Services like uber x and lyft. They have a rally planned in front of city hall this afternoon. The Philadelphia Cab Association argues that uber x has been operating in the city illegally for the past two years with no oversight. Cab drivers of philadelphia have been holding protests for more than a year. Pennsylvania attorney general Kathleen Kane is still on the job this morning after lawmakers failed in their bid to remove her from office. The state senate fell four votes shy of the twothirds majority needed to call on the governor to remove kane from her post. But her troubles arent over. The state house yesterday voted to authorize its Judiciary Committee to recommend whether kane should be impeached. Kanes law license is suspended while she fights criminal charges that she leaked secret grand jury information and then lied about it. Philadelphias monsignor lynn could ask the courts to set bail for him again after a state Appeals Court yesterday refused to review a ruling that threw out his child endangerment conviction. Lynn has been out has been in and out of prison, i should say, as Appeals Courts have split on whether his conviction is even valid. Hes the first u. S. Church supervisor ever charged over his role in the alleged coverup of child sex abuse by priests. Lynn currently in prison has served more than two years of a three to sixyear sentence. A possible headache now for commuters nj transit workers are ready for a strike. Union representative said conductors yesterday more than a dozen unions involved in the contract talks have authorized the strike if necessary. The deal breaker is health premiums. The deadline for a possible walkout is march 13th. The last time there was a strike on nj transit back in 1983. Most of the time its dry, but with snow showers have been heavy bringing the visibility down and creating a quick coating of slick conditions. We wont see that all day long. The gusty winds, thats a different story. They stay with us right on through this afternoon. In fact, during the afternoon well likely get a bit stronger. And then this weekend more wind and colder, a bitter cold weekend. The coldest of the season so far. Its not exactly warm right now. 21 in reading with sunshine. Clouds moving through philadelphia. Well be in and out of the clouds, cape may, same story. Both locations in the middle 20s right now. A very slow warm up is underway. There its cleared out nicely. We saw some earlier. This is a live view from the comcast center. Those clouds are on the move and well be watching areas north and west for more snow showers blowing in on these winds. Look at these wind gusts. 33 miles an hour in the pocono mountains, gusting to 32 in philadelphia and the strong winds extend to the jersey shore. Atlantic city has 31mileanhour wind gusts. So the windchill, well, these readings have barely moved this morning. 6 is what it feels like right now in reading. 7 degrees for quakertown. A cold morning all day long weve been stuck right around 10 degrees in northeast philadelphia and philadelphia international. If youre looking for warmer temperatures in south jersey, its not happening today. 11 degrees for dover, wilmington and georgetown. So its cold all around. You can see the clouds that are blowing through the area. This will continue this afternoon. And these brighter white clouds those are the snow producers. There goes the snow moving through Burlington County with just some very light snow. Heavier snow showers are in Northern Ocean county. Theyll be heading out to sea. But we could see some more from this next line of snow showers moving through during the afternoon hour. The hour by hour forecast shows clouds continue to come through. Thats at 2 00 this afternoon as we head into the Late Afternoon and evening hours we may see some light snow showers develop. So dont be surprised if you see those return during the day today. The temperatures slowly climbing into the middle 20s for pennsburg, fleetwood and morgantown. Cold gusty winds all day long for new hope and bordentown, it will be in the 20s but feel like its in the teens. And at the shore cape may, avalon and ventnor city all at 29 degrees. The winds steady through the afternoon and into the evening hours. Wilmington, newark will struggle to get up to 27 degrees. 26 in malvern. Clouds break at times for some sunshine, but theres still that chance of a brief snow shower moving through blowing through this afternoon. Winds out of the northwest at 22 miles an hour. Cold gusty winds will settle down a little bit tonight, but thats going to allow us to get colder. 17 in the morning. And staying below freezing all day on friday. And the real cold, the coldest of the season arrives on saturday blowing in winds that will cause temperatures to fall during the day. 22 in the morning, 13 in the afternoon. You can barely see out the windshield. Bundle up if youre heading outdoors. Its a windy and cold morning as we take a live look at the blue cross river rink along penns landing. Today is cold enough for snow, and most of the day you will not see snow. The snow that came through pennsylvania into new jersey is still clearing through new jersey. Toms river is getting some of that snow. Some of the heavier snow right now really is briefly blinding, and it could create a coating. Now, its already drying out in philadelphia. But we saw those snow showers move through the city as well. In fact, we captured that very snow shower on a time lapse from the comcast center. This is how it looked as it swept through center city. Those fast moving snow showers are now out of the picture. And you can see we are in and out of the clouds right now. Some breaks of sunshine. And the gusty winds will continue blowing through those clouds during the day today. Now, most of the afternoon is going to be dry. But theres still a possibility well see some of those snow showers this afternoon. This is a live picture of that same area. More students are now dealing with a stomach illness that has affected more than 100 people at Ursinus College. Reporter and, keith, this is not over yet. We continue to see an ambulance drive around campus. And over towards the Wellness Center. Not a good sign here. Especially for those people who tell us theyre just going through this miserable illness. People who were able to get up and leave their rooms today, they cant go to the dining hall. That is still closed. Sanitation crews are working with Montgomery County Health Officials to make sure any trace of a possible virus is wiped out. This morning wawa served breakfast in the gyms lobby. And just about half an hour our neighborhood bakery plans to deliver hundreds of sandwiches for lunch. Still unclear where this bug came from but students tell us theyre worried about going to class. When you have someone in close proximity especially with going to classes being in the dining hall all the time, its naturally going to spread but hopefully it will work its way out soon. Reporter the county Health Department is doing some testing but say it may take up to a week to get results. And they figure out exactly what happened here. Experts say this type of environment, a university environment, it would be common for a norovirus especially this time of year but no confirmation thats what this bug is going around. Nbc 10, drew smith. Drew, thank you. On capitol hill the head of the cdc is testifying before a Senate Committee on the threat of the zika virus. Among topics being discussed concerns over travelers bringing zika into the u. S. And president obamas request for nearly 2 billion in emergency funding to combat the virus. The zika virus is spreading rapidly through latin america and is linked to severe birth defects. The Health Minister in brazil says the countrys joining together with the university of texas to develop a vaccine against the zika virus. The goal is to have a vaccine ready for clinical testing within a year. The brazilian government is investing nearly 2 million of the research. The countrys also looking to work with the cdc and pharmaceutical giant gsk here in the u. S. A cruise ship that took a beating during a winter storm is now docked in new jersey. And its passengers safe on solid ground. They talked to nbcs Janet Shamlian about the brutal conditions they faced at sea. Reporter this morning one of the Worlds Largest and newest cruise ships, the anthem of the seas, is finally back in port. The ship and Royal Caribbeans reputation bruised and battered after sailing directly into a powerful atlantic storm. Three days before their scheduled arrival, passengers couldnt wait to get off the anthem of the seas when it docked late last night. I can bend down and kiss the ground. Reporter vacationers describe it as terrifying. Probably the scariest day of my entire life. It was a cruise from hell. Reporter 30foot seas and winds of more than 150 miles an hour. And they were right in the middle of it. I feared for my life. The movie titanic when the two old people laying in bed saying goodbye for the last time, thats what we felt like. Im on one bed, so my other son wont fall off. It was amazing. Reporter shattered glass and overturned furniture, passengers told to she wouldlter in their. At the height of the storm the massive vessel listing as much as 45 degrees. 50 degrees, you dont come back from that. Reporter the remainder of the cruise was canceled and on monday the ship turned around. I turn 25 today. We were supposed to be on an island today. I would say it ruined my vacation a little bit. Reporter this morning Royal Caribbean is vowing to improve how it monitors storms saying, what happened this week showed that we need to do better. The vessel is met by the coast guard and wont be allowed to sail again until its deemed safe. Royal caribbean is promising full refunds and credit toward a future cruise. Some of its 4,500 passengers say they wont be using it. 50 off is not enough to get me back on a cruise ship. That was nbcs Janet Shamlian reporting. This morning a community outside baltimore is mourning the deaths of two Sheriff Deputies who were gunned down. A disturbance call around lunchtime yesterday brought the deputies to a panera bread in abington, maryland. Investigators say brian evans shot one of the deputies inside the restaurant and then ran. A second deputy caught up to him. Police say evans killed him too. Other officers shot and killed evans a short time later. After 41 days, the occupation of the National Wildlife refuge near burns, oregon, may be coming to close as nbcs kyle abashi shows us should be coming to an end soon. Reporter the standoff could be until the final hours. The last remaining occupiers say they intend to turn themselves later on this morning. Behind me you see one of several roadblocks leading to the National Wildlife refuge in eastern oregon. So far its been relatively quiet this morning. The final four remaining occupiers said during a live stream Conference Call last night they were prepared to leave. Nevada lawmaker michelle fiori, evangelist franklin gram and bundys lawyers expected to meet the protesters at the fbi checkpoint at 8 00 pacific time this morning where the occupiers will turn themselves in. Tensions were high last night after the fbi surrounded the occupiers campsite. Federal agents say one of the protesters went outside of the barricade, important to note no shots were fired. Today marks day 41 of the occupation. And, again, expectation is it could be over. The occupiers intend to turn themselves in this morning. Near burns, oregon, kyle iboshi, nbc news. Americas secretary of defense is now outlining the nations plan to defeat isis. Ash carter told journalists today the Strategy Center on capturing the cities of mosul in iraq and raqqah in syria, his comments came after a nato meeting in brussels where allies turkey, germany and greece asked for help to end the migration crisis in europe which is the worst since world war ii. Weve all probably been upset about a haircut at one time or another in our lives, but Police Say One california woman was so upset about her new do she tried basher barber. The barber says the woman left happy, left a 20 tip even. The woman returned an hour later armed with a gun to complain. Witnesses say she tried to shoot the barber three times but the gun didnt fire. Thats when the barber and others tackled her to the ground. The victim says it was a very scary moment. All life run in front of your eyes. She came in, you know, bald spot on the side. Im like i didnt do that. When she came back in she did not have the same haircut that she had actually left with. The woman is expected to face an attempted murder charge. A homeowner in miami is speaking out after a Surveillance Video shows a u. P. S. Driver tossing packages outside of a home and one of those packages contained bullets. The safety issue of that something you dont really want to throw around. And the boxes were clearly marked they were small arms ammunition. U. P. S. Says its investigating this incident. Take a look, the Delivery Driver drops the packages over the gate and the homeowner says the gate is actually unlocked. And there was a good reason to take better care of the packages, one was handgun ammunition he ordered for target practice. Nothing actually broke, but the impact scattered cartridges all over the ground. You can see it right there in the video. Happening today, philadelphias mayor will officially end the Fire Departments brownouts. The police temporarily closed certain fire houses and reassigned firefighters in an attempt to save money. Critics say the brownouts slowed firefighters from getting to emergencies. The department suspended the practice on new years eve. Happening now, a recovering high school in philadelphia is hosting a pennsylvania lawmaker whos introducing legislation to make those types of schools more accessible to students who need them. Take a look at the most recent numbers. From the Substance Abuse and Mental Health service administration. Their survey estimates within the last month in pennsylvania about 9. 2 of kids between 12 and 17 used an illegal drug. Thats about 89,000 kids. The National Average is around 9. 4 . The day starts with conversation. This is really a form of therapy. And these students are recovering addicts. They have come to us from treatment centers. They come to us from the juvenile justice system. Reporter head of school Rebecca Bonner says for many teens in recovery they just cant go back to their old school. And shouldnt. You know, we would not tell an adult whos done 30, 60 days of treatment to go back to the bar where they were hanging out. We do that all the time with students. I dont fault, you know, the public schools. Reporter nancy peters son is a recent graduate, but only a couple years ago he was using and dealing drugs. He had been stabbed. He had been shot at. He was dealing with people he had never met. Reporter two years later and now hes in community college. But there are two big problems with a school like this, one, the cost. Its over 20,000 per student per year. And, two do people know that this school exist sns. Not enough people know. I didnt know anything about it and im kind of immersed in this. So most people dont know about it. Reporter so now the push for legislation to get state funding to allow more students to attend and continue their recovery. We know that recovery works. And we know that kids go onto do wonderful things. And we just need to be serving more of these kids. He had a second chance. And he didnt want to blow it. Thank you for having me. Question to start for people who dont know, whats face time theater . We are a nonprofit theater company. We started in 2012 with our summer Stage Program. And weve grown since then into a full summer of summer Stage Programming for kids fourth grade through college. And now were adding one for first grade through fourth grade, which is awesome. And we also now offer classes weekly and workshops in after School Programs as well as in our own studio. And were opening up lessons for acting lessons and music lessons. Thats great. We have an adult season and everything. Yeah. Were growing a lot. Its awesome. You put on a lot of stage shows, but you also ahead to area schools and target kind of students getting younger and younger and younger. Why do you think earlier education is important when it comes to theater and acting and expressing yourself . You know, i think its just important for kids to learn that they can be themselves and that they can get in front of people and speak in front of people. And later on they get into more of the acting and the singing and things like that. But its really about selfexpression and about loving the arts, all arts, not just theater but all of them. Music, fine arts, everything. Get them to come out of their shell a little bit early. Yeah. Start with preschool age. Wow, really . Yeah.  that must be fun. I teach preschoolers every week. We just moved in a month and a half ago. Cool. And we are raising money to continue our programming weekly in the schools as well as our summer Stage Program. And we have scholarships for summer Stage Program too so we put our money towards that and just continuing the growth in our new space. Thats great. Now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. Getting closer to lunchtime, were seeing sunshine but were not seeing much of a warmup. Live view looking towards boathouse row. Look at the wind blowing the water on the schuylkill. Gusty winds also shaking the camera. Thats going to continue this afternoon. And we will keep our temperatures low. Holding at 24 degrees now in philadelphia. The wind is steady at 24 miles an hour, but were getting gusts higher than 30 miles an hour. So the windchill right now, the feels like temperature is 8 degrees in the city. Pocono mountains feels like its below zero. Snow making be able to do it for days. Were going to stay below freezing right on through the weekend. Mother nature at time will give us a few scattered snow showers. Well see that again this certainly cold enough. Right now 21 in pottstown and doylestown, not much in southern jersey, 25 millville, 22 for wilmington. We saw teens for each of these locations first thing this morning. Its warmed up a little bit, but its not going to warm up much more. The clouds will continue blowing through. Well be in and out of the cloud cover. The wind will keep those clouds moving and keep snow showers moving out of here for now. But keep an eye on the sky this afternoon. We could see more scattered snow showers. More cold is on the way. The weengd and the worst of it is coming through sunday morning. Look at these temperatures. First thing sunday morning in Atlantic City 11 degrees with winds at 33 miles an hour it will feel like 10 below, Single Digits in vineland with 27mileanhour winds. And look at winds for wilmington and philadelphia right around 20 miles an hour. So first thing sunday morning 15 below the windchill for wilmington. 17 degrees below for philadelphia. And not as windy but plenty cold for doylestown and Plymouth Meeting Single Digits, closer to zero first thing sunday morning. So some very cold air is ahead. Youll feel cold today, gets much colder this weekend. Cold gusty winds blowing some clouds through the area and a chance of some spotty snow showers this afternoon. If we get them, you can expect to see some limited visibility and a quick dusting in those areas that will see it. Otherwise its going to be dry for the rest of the day. Temperatures peaking in the 20s. Winds gusting to 20 or 30 miles an hour, will die down some tonight and theres your colder start tomorrow morning. Warm up to 31 with less wind well be able to warm into the low 30s, but it should stay below freezing. And then here comes the real round of cold, 22 degrees saturday morning. 13 saturday afternoon. And with winds gusting potentially to 45 miles an Hour Saturday afternoon. Theres that frigid morning on sunday with the winds still blowing, 2 degrees would tie the record for sunday morning in philadelphia. A cold morning monday. Cold enough for snow. And theres a chance of snow developing monday. But a warmup tuesday would have that snow changing over to rain and just the chance of some scattered showers wednesday with a high of 48. Going offshore moving out of ocean county, but theres still a possibility of some light snow showers passing through during the afternoon and into the early evening commute hours.
