Blizzard of 2016. Philadelphia plans to have all streets drivable by wednesday night. Several of septas bus routes are still suspended. As for schools we know philadelphia public and schools of the archdiocese are closed. Other districts could decide in the morning. And today we are getting a better look at the damage down the jersey shore. Our coverage begins with nbc 10s Rosemary Connors live from queen village. Reporter jacqueline, theres plenty of plowing going on, you can see by the snow here piled very high. The sidewalks are treated as well but it can be difficult to navigate the sidewalks, the streets, a lot of slush on the ground. The main reason why philly schools, public and parochial, are closed yet again. Spending a monday in Columbus Square park at 12th and morton streets was a Welcome Break for families who would otherwise be at work or school. Tomorrow they get a second snow day whether they want another or not. I would have no problem sending my kid to school tomorrow. Were able to fortunately get our car out and sidewalks around here are pretty clear. Reporter on matten street in point breeze danene carr is concerned school buses will have difficulty navigating the roads this week. While her neighbors are salting the sidewalks she is worried they might get slick and be unsafe for her son who walks to school. He might slip, fall, you know, hurt themselves, its cold out here. Icy. Reporter philadelphias Streets Department continues to work overtime to clear the mounds and tackle the side streets. Meanwhile, towing companies are responding to requests from owners to move cars that they abandoned over the weekend in the middle of many blocks. Just cars stuck all over the place. Weve been winching them out doing the best we can to clear the streets. Reporter its a problem for the plow trucks if there is a car in the road they cant come through. On catherine street you can see there are a few inches on the ground. Its going to take a while for all of this to go down to black top. The Streets Department says they will work throughout the evening, if your neighborhood is not plowed the best thing you can do, call 311 and let them know about it. In Montgomery County a councilman wrote an apology about the lack of plows. Marlin millner says hes received a ton of texts and emails. He admits the city messed up and calls it quote a snow response failure. Our crews this morning did not find one single plow, residents helped by clearing enough snow so they could get their cars out. Boy, took a lot of work. Philadelphia International Airport things are slowly getting back to normal. Airport officials tell us airlines canceled about 10 of flights today and all runways are clear of snow. But as always, it is best to check with your airline before you head to the airport. We have you covered from every Vantage Point. We have reporters checking the streets in news force 10, storm force 10, and in the air in sky force 10. We begin with nbc 10s Mitch Blacher in the Lehigh Valley. You have been in a traffic jam for what, been an hour . Reporter we were stuck in allentown for about an hour, we just got out and were headed toward route 22 right now. This is a look here at the conditions that were seeing right now. About as clear as weve seen. This is the main road that has been plowed and is in pretty good shape. The roads in allentown in some of the neighborhoods, they are not in nearly as good a shape as we saw. Twolane roads down to one lane. In allentown cars buried in feet of snow was a common sight. Trying to get out. Trying to get out since what, since it started. We net joe harris. I thought they towed it already. I didnt see it. Snow was that high. Reporter his neighbors finished their sidewalks and stowed their cars, they were dicking out the water meters. Pretty amazing. But hey, this is what it is. Reporter for this neighbor the snow was shoulder high. Its a sight eagle fans wont mind. The redskins fan was wearing his hat. Digging away here. Reporter never before has the Lehigh Valley seen so much snow, 31. 9 inches, nearly 8 inches more than the previous record. Whats another foot. Youre still digging as much. Reporter the mayor says more than 40 crews are working day and night to clear roads. The snow came down at a rate of 3 inches per hour. The plow operators that we had simply could not keep up with the snow plowing operation. Reporter he said he asked the state to send extra equipment. Allentown actually never declared a snow emergency. They simply didnt expect as much accumulation as they got. Were now entering getting on route 22 on our way out of allentown. Allentowns mayor has asked for any help from any municipalities, private contractors who may have extra equipment. Thats the latest. Mitch blacher. Harry hairston has checked out the streets across the region in storm force 10, he is in southwest chester. I know you experienced a range of weather conditions. What is it like where you are . Reporter right now this neighborhood im going to show it to you right now, they have been complaining all day that they have been trying to get dug out. Looks like its starting. They are clearing out. People here with shovels are getting the big mounds of snow as high as 8, 9 feet some of them. In front of us you can see quite a few folks still out with the shovels. Here comes a plow truck now trying to clean up this area. It has been a mess out here. Folks have been trying to dig out all over chester county. That was also the case in Montgomery County when storm force was there today over in norristown and in norrenton and through plymouth meeting. So tonight, they are working hard to dig out to try to get things cleared out so they can get their lives back to normal. Reporting live in west chester, harry hairston. Back to you. That area has plenty of side streets still not plowed. Look at all of the snow filling the streets there. The city of philadelphia hopes to get all of the streets done in the next 48 hours. Of course manayunk has all of those hills as well. We know all of that black ice is going to start forming. Sheena parveen is here. Is there more sun on the way to melt this during the day snom you know were going to see more clouds tomorrow, but temperatures will be in the 40s for most of the area tomorrow so we expect the melting in many locations. Still. But today we have the sun, warmer temperatures and now the temperatures are dropping again. So, the areas that were slushy today or watery from the melting, those are all starting to refreeze. Allentown 28, 32 in pottstown, philadelphia dropped to 36 degrees, 32 in northeast philly, a temperature drop from the past hour. 32 trenton, 29 millville, a big drop there 33 in wilmington so. Were going to very soon see a lot of areas with the slush freeze back over to ice. Especially overnight tonight. So now were seeing it forming north and west. By 11 00 p. M. Well see icy spots around. If you leave before 8 00 tomorrow morning, be very careful, keep in mind we do expect a lot of icy spots on a lot of roadways and sidewalks. Check out the view from a drone over West Wildwood in cape may county. You can see the sea wall crumbled. Caused by the that caused the bay to flood. And sky force 10 you can see another concern, beach erosion in ocean city. There is one lone object on the beach, check out the buoy that ended up right in the middle. Jersey shore reporter Ted Greenberg rode up and down the coast to check out how the blizzard of 2016 damaged the jersey shore. We know there was so much damage there. Reporter there really is, jackie. From the beach to the bay, this is one of many beaches here in stone harbor that was severely damaged by the storm. And in one community, homes are literally on the edge. The ocean is calmer now. But still dangerously close to houses in long beach township. Many of them are tinkering on the edge of falling over. Reporter the noreaster washed away dunes and parts of peoples property, in an ert that was also devastated by hurricane sandy. We lost probably a half million cubic yards of sand. Reporter now the township is having sand trucked in to build a barrier between the homes and the ocean. Were going to start with 600 truck loads, we can probably use 600 every three days. Reporter less than two weeks ago leaders talked with me about their serious concerns for the exact same area after a beach replenishment project was suspended until the spring. What we saw is what we predicted might happen. Were one storm away from having another major disaster. Reporter in North Wildwood an urgent effort to repair a major breach in the dune system there. This drone video provides an aerial look at the damaged area, before and after the storm. Mobile itzed equipment trying to fix that breach so we dont have more storm tides coming through the area. When you see how powerful the water can be its it makes you take a step back and think. Reporter also today, state senator Jeff Van Drew sent a letter to governor christie urging him to ask the federal government to declare cape may count disaster area along with Cumberland County which also sustained Severe Damage on its delaware bayshore. Nbc 10 news Bureau Reporter tim furlong spent the day driving around talking to people to assess the situation in new castle county. Im not going anywhere. Reporter mandy had a day off from teaching spent it shoveling. Plowed under on her tight the street. Some of her neighbors shoveled out now saving their parking spots, is that sflel not technically. People look the other way a little bit here. Especially during snowstorms. Reporter at Rockford Park kids enjoyed the day off from school. Most if not all of these kids are going to be off tomorrow. There is that much snow still causing problems. I had to back up to let an ambulance down a street and in the city businesses are also still shoveling their sidewalks not going to matter if many customers cant drive to get to them. The city is teamed up with private contractors, they promise they are doing their best. So far. The main roads are okay. The rest suck. They are bad. Reporter this from a guy who delivers pizza. The walkin business was down, customers made matt brave the roads so they didnt have to. The digout will lass at least into tuesday. If you were one of those who played for snow you got us a whole lot of it. Most residents kneel they get it, this is a big storm its going to take a while. Its going to be interesting to see how long they can be so patient. The city officials tell me the plow crews, contractors are going to work through the night into tuesday. What a snow day off from school there were thousands of kids, sunshine and the sleds sold out because this was the place to be. Nothing better than fresh crisp air in your face under the sun and on top of the snow, kids of all ages took advantage of their first snow day off from school. They were off, i was off so we came out sledding today. Reporter saturdays blizzard paved the way for a threeday weekend for parents too, many thanking Mother Nature for a monday off. You are happy to not go to work. No. Im very happy i didnt have to go to work. But i have to tomorrow. Reporter with the fun police near the johnson road hill had some families move their cars to not clog tight streets. There are so many here. Parent dues a good job trying to make sure they keep an eye on kids. Reporter Burlington Township teacher deanna isnt sure if her district will resume classes tomorrow to coincide with her childrens schedule. My children go to the district down here so im stressing on what i was going to do if i had to go back and then had to deal with figure out where my kids were going. Reporter today all about the memories and smiles, tomorrow. Heaps and bounds of snow, 2, 3, 4 feet in our development. Reporter police and parents reminding drivers to watch for giant piles of snow. When you get a blizzard, theres not many places to put the snow. The piles are extra big and the piles hide the children. Reporter it was a good place to remind parents and drivers to be mindful of children as they head back to school. And the Reason Police moved cars today, was in case Emergency Responders had to maneuver into this neighborhood. Im cydney long, nbc 10 news. Sheena, some kids and children have another day off to go sledding. There you go. Still on the ground i promise you that snow is not going anywhere soon. But we will see a little more melting and one place a lot of people are going to be tomorrow with a day off is the poconos and a lot of the ski resorts, this is blue mountain, a lot of people out there now taking advantage of all of the snow they got. Feels a lot better when you fall on this as opposed to ice. We have more melting that happened today because temperatures were around 40 degrees for much of the area. So with that being said and temperatures below freezing tonight we have ice forming tonight. Right now we have ice forming in some areas and thats the case for the early part of the morning commute tomorrow. So be very careful. Tomorrow afternoon right around the 40s again, but we have some showers in the forecast, these are going to be rain showers. 28 now in allentown, 32 in pottstown, bensalem, also trenton, a lot of numbers dloping at freezing at this point. 33 in wilmington, 29 in millville. 34 in glassboro and atlantic city. We go overnight everyones below freezing here. So take a look at the temperature trend. 10 00 p. M. We should be in about the mid20s for most of the area. Then just staying in the 20s as we go into early tomorrow morning. So refreezing the ice will keep forming, and early tomorrow morning especially before 8 00 a. M. , just be careful because we do expect icy spots, the slush, wet spots, freezing over. Here is a look at the snow cover. Most of that is north and west of philadelphia but pretty much the entire area seeing the snow cover and unless youre along the immediate shore not as much but what we are looking at is that refreezing. Dry conditions, locally on satellite and radar. The rain were tracking is far away. So small system around chicago, not a lot of moisture with it and not a lot of moisture by the time it gets here tomorrow but still a chance of rain showers. This is future weather here so overnight temperatures keep dropping below freezing, that ice will be around early tomorrow morning by 8 00 a. M. Most areas north and west of philadelphia that will see the early ice, then through the afternoon, some rain showers moving through, temperatures in the 40s so i think well see more melting around as we go through the day, then we go into wednesday morning, well be watching a weather system down to our south that could try to bring some snow showers into parts of southern delaware and south jersey but by wednesday afternoon, were still going to be topping out around 40 degrees. We go into the end of the week thursday and friday, a weather system offshore will be watching closely the models are keeping it just offshore, some other models trying to skim the area. Well be watching that. Either way your weekend looks pretty dry. Tonight, ice developing overnight, partly cloudy, 29 for the low in philadelphia, 23 areas north and west. Tomorrow temperatures in the 40s, 41 to 44 degrees, the farther south you are they may be warmer than that. Not as cold. With a chance of some rain showers. Then we go into wednesday, well be looking to the south for snow showers around and then by thursday and friday, temperatures still near 40, watching that system offshore.
