Along the coast in new jersey and delaware. We begin with sheena with a look at where hermine is right now. Well, hermine is now moving into South Carolina as a Tropical Storm. So if you were with us last night at 11 00 p. M. , you would have seen hermine make landfall in florida as a category 1 hurricane. Now its quickly moved up to the north. Winds sustained at 50 miles an hour. Its a Tropical Storm. But it is swinging a very large rain area to its north and northeast. Now approaching parts of southern virginia, stretching through north carolina. This storm will continue to track to the northeast and eventually get closer to our area for your Labor Day Weekend. If you look at the center of the storm, the rain area stretches over 360 miles away. So the rain for us will move in as early as tomorrow. Now well go to heavier bands near myrtle beach, South Carolina. Some of of these heavier bands we have almost three inches of rain per hour. The good news is, the rain is moving quickly. Its not just going to sit there. As the storm gets closer, it may be stationary for a moment offshore locally. That will be causing big problems. Right another r now were looking closer to the center. Storm off the shores of South Carolina. Winds gusting to 50 to 60 miles an hour. Wave heights up to 10 feet offshore. Now theyre increasing to 16 feet. As it gets closer to us, well see high wave heights and major flooding concern. In South Carolina, the winds going counterclockwise around this storm. So that indicates we do have that Tropical Storm right in the center near orangeberg, South Carolina. Winds gusting about 45 to 50 miles an hour inland. Now were looking closer to home. We are dry. Just to our south, look how close the rain is now. It is just south of virginia, moving into virginia as we speak. And tomorrow it will be moving into parts of delaware. Now were going to get a little bit closer with storm ranger 10, our mobile radar. We have driven it towards elizabeth city, and this is where we start to get a closer view of the leading edge of the rain. And thats where you also pick up heavier rain bands. Well be utilizing storm ranger 10 throughout this storm. Well be able to show you maybe areas that other stationary radars will miss it. The entire jersey shore has been extended around the delaware bay. That is something to note. And the delaware beaches, winds could be gusting near 60 miles an hour. Major flooding concerns across part of the area, too. So the storm impacting us for the Labor Day Holiday weekend. The newest track is just out. Chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz has that. Glenn . Yeah, sheena. Unfortunately, the updated track is even closer to the jersey shore, delaware beaches than the previous tracks. And that just confirms our thinking that this is going to be a beyond serious event. This is a dangerous event that is taking place, unfortunately during a Holiday Weekend. Theres a nice picture at cape may. Tomorrow will not be quite as nice. And then it really goes downhill after that. This is the latest track in from the National Hurricane center. 50mileanhour winds right now. Its moving 20 miles an hour. Still 50 overnight, because the center is too close to water. Some of the circulation is over the warm waters, and so it wont weaken. Now, the question is, is it going to transition into a type of noreaster. The only thing that will do is kind of change the structure. That would expand the wind field and the rain if it does turn into a noreaster. But either way, its not going anywhere. And the official track even now has it curving, maybe even taking loops, and thats a hurricane. Monday, just off the coast. At least hurricane strength. That is not good. Because we have this onshore flow. Its about the wind speed. Its about the wind direction. Its about how much ocean is covered. We call it the fetch. All of that helps build up the waves. And the time of that. So you get days of it, and youre going to get some really serious flooding. So this is the latest track. Of the rainfall. Just barely into philadelphia, but perhaps by sunday night and monday, if the storm does get closer, it can bring some of that moisture back inland a little bit. Of course, the shores going to get hit the hardest. Rain develops saturday afternoon. Heavy at times on sunday, with moderate coastal flooding. And major coastal flooding on monday, as the rain lingers. More on the rest of the neighborhoods coming up. Count on the nbc 10 app to track hermine throughout the weekend. Get live radar, and weather alerts for your neighborhood or your holiday destination. That app sa free download. Our coverage continues with Jersey Shore Bureau reporter Ted Greenberg live in longport. Ted, whats the feeling there tonight . Reporter well, keith, folks are really trying to squeeze in as much beach time as possible before the weather really goes downhill. This storm could bring major beach erosion to the jersey coastline, and very serious flooding. Public works crews have been busy getting beaches ready for whatever hermine throws at them. In brigantine, they spent hours today pulling up plastic walkways along the sand. Walkways are found at beach access points. Officials say they dont want them to be washed away if the ocean comes all the way to the back of the beach. Another man lives along the bay in a floodprone section. He was putting up a plastic mesh fence in front of his house. Hes hoping the fence will keep sea grass from blowing all over his property. Authorities say now is the time for people here at the shore to get ready for the storm. They should be preparing for the worst. They should be securing all their outdoor belongings, making sure they have everything that they need in case an Evacuation Order is given. Reporter officials tell me dealing with a major storm like this over Labor Day Weekend is far more complicated than, say, a winter noreaster, because so many people are here now. Live in longport, im Ted Greenberg, nbc 10 news. Ted, thank you so much. To the skies now. George spencer is giving us a birdseye view of the Holiday Weekend. George, where are you right now . Reporter we are just across the Delaware River from philadelphia. Take a look, were right at the spot where 67676 and the 42 freeway all merge together. Even with hermine looming for the Holiday Weekend, it looks like a lot of people are getting out of the city right now. This is, after all, considered one of the unofficial last weekends of summer. And it seems people are eager for a piece of that summer weather. In this spot we happened to notice the heavy traffic impacting some peoples drive. About five cars right there along the shoulder appear to be involved in a minor Chain Reaction rearender. It doesnt look like theres any injuries, but it speaks to the volume of traffic, people heading out of the city over the next hour. Well be flying near the shore and let you know of any other issues. George spencer, nbc 10 news. Now to decision 2016. Where donald trump visits philadelphia today, creating at least one clash between a man protesting the Campaign Stop and the lone trump supporter who showed up. A man holding a democrat for trump sign was hit over the head with a poster board. Jerry said he had every right to be at the protest. Trump met africanamerican leaders from the community in a closeddoor meeting. He also met with the mother of a murder victim. Trump tells nbc 10 the meeting went well. And that they discussed problems in the community that he says he could fix. Nbc 10s lauren mayk spoke to donald trump while he was here. She had a oneonone interview with the candidate. Lauren, what did he have to tell you . Reporter keith and jacqueline, we talked about a number of things, including immigration, sanctuary cities and his outreach to africanamericans. Now, that was part of his visit here today. And as he has talked about that, he talks sometimes about neighborhoods, saying that you walk down the street, you get shot. So i asked him about what he plans to do to make a difference. Whats your plan to deal with gun violence . You have to have strong police. You have to have Strong Community support. If you dont have the support, the Police Together working together what about the guns on the street . You have to take them away from criminals. They know who they are. You have criminals carrying guns. And theyre carrying things like bombs and carrying Everything Else you can carry. And you have to know who those people are. And the police know who they are. The police have the police know so well who they are. What are they not doing that they they have to, number one, they have to be stronger in terms of getting the bad ones off the street. You have people on the street, and frankly, i think what you do is you have a situation where you have a known criminal, an offender whos got a weapon of some kind, youve got to take it away. They did it in new york. And they did it under stop and frisk. They did it under rudy giuliani. And stop and frisk is a very positive thing. They stopped them in new york, and the numbers are starting to go up again. Reporter rudy giuliani, of course, has been an adviser to donald trump, has been a big supporter of his. Now, donald trump also taking a shot at philadelphia. While i talked to him today, saying that the mayor here was doing a terrible job. Were going to have more from my oneonone interview with him coming up at 6 00. Keith and jacqueline, back to you. Lauren, thank you. The Holiday Weekend hinges on hermine. It is a Tropical Storm right now. It made landfall last night in florida as a category 1 hurricane. Winds are down to 50 miles an hour. It is moving a little bit quicker now, northeast at 20 miles an hour. It is in South Carolina. So it has picked up quite a bit of speed. As we go through the next couple of days, it will continue to move up into our area, just offshore. And thats going to cause some major flooding concerns. This is the most uptodate track just released from the National Hurricane center. So now were looking at sunday afternoon, monday afternoon, and even tuesday. Now, its going to be just to our south as we go into tomorrow afternoon. Well start to see rain increasing for south jersey and delaware, conditions starting to deteriorate later in the day tomorrow. Especially sunday and monday when its offshore, the reason why the track starts to look a little funny as we go through the weekend is because a lot of models are picking up on this storm system stalling. Essentially theres nothing to keep it moving, so it may just be lingering offshore, which is bad for us, and coastal communities, because that just means a persistent onshore wind. And we know when water starts moving, theres really nothing to stop it. So we do expect flooding along the shore, possibly the delaware bay. That could lead into the Delaware River. Ill talk about that in just a second. Closer look at the radar image. Its spinning close to charleston, South Carolina, now. The center is just about over land. But its still getting fueled by some of that atlantic moisture now. Heavy rain bands just to the north. Now approaching parts of virginia, southern virginia. So its already in north carolina, locally were dry. But there you see the rain from hermine getting ever so closely. It the continue tonight. This is storm ranger 10, our mobile radar, the only radar on wheels. We drove it to the south. Elizabeth city is where it is. That shows you the heaviest rain band. The edge of this storm, the Northern Edge of the rain. And its going to continue to move into parts of virginia. So thats what were looking at here. Its going to keep going north and eventually move into delaware and south jersey as we go into your saturday. Tropical storm warning, the entire jersey shore, something to note here, its been extended, and includes the delaware bay. So Tropical Storm conditions are likely. Winds near 40 to 50 miles an hour sustained. Thats a constant wind. We could see gusts as high as about 60 miles an hour. A lot of this will be onshore winds for the area, too. Saturday afternoon, rain and wind. Delaware beaches and the new jersey shore mainly. By sunday, heavy rain, high wind for delaware and new jersey mainly. Some of the rain could be moving into the philadelphia area. That very closely depends on where the center of the storm is. A small shift to the east could make a huge difference on who sees the cutoff of heavy rain. Monday well continue to see wind and rain, depending how far away the storm tries to move. Drier the farther inland you go. In the inland valley and poconos, you could have a lower chance of rain. From saturday through sunday and monday. Atlantic city and Rehoboth Beach, if youre in between these areas, your high time will fall in between. If youre familiar with how tides work, these are the high tide cycles. 9 30 in the Morning Saturday is when it starts. 12 hours later we get the next high tide. Sunday, that gets pushed back closer to 10 00 a. M. Monday, closer to 11 00 a. M. For the first high tide time. The next one will fall 12 hours later. Those are the times were going to be watching. Now, the flood threat, the minor tidal flooding will be starting late saturday, getting worse sunday and monday. Now, if youre in the back bays of the jersey shore or any of our delaware beaches, any back bays will be the worst. The flooding, it will be hard for the flooding to recede during low tide. So thats something we really have to watch. And the delaware bay and the Delaware River, tidal flooding is possible saturday, sunday and monday. So again, were going to be watching this system very closely. Here is the most uptodate track on it. Im going to show you this one. This is one model that were looking at for rainfall. There you see it saturday, sunday. Sunday afternoon. Just offshore. Again, the center of this will determine a lot, because if its just a little bit farther to the east, we could see the heaviest rain just in new jersey and delaware. If its a little bit closer to us, the heavier rains could extend inland. Either way, flooding is going to be the main concern. And todays a great day at the shore. Tomorrow might be okay. But after that tomorrows going to be deteriorating slowly through the afternoon. Its definitely going to be the best day out of the weekend from what it looks like. Coastal flooding. Big concern. Coastal flooding if youre in the back bay. Thats going to be the worst. Okay. Sheena, thank you so much. Take a look now at the video that we received out of georgia. Savannah, roads are closed because of falling debris. Homes suffered storm damage, strong winds also produced high waves on the island. The storm has weakened. But its still packing a punch. Hermine the first hurricane to make landfall in more than a decade, tearing apart the big ben region. More than 253 floridians experienced power loss. Reporter the storm surge, as much as 9 feet in some areas, pushed water in places its not supposed to go, including homes along the shoreline. As the day progresses, the water will continue to rise. Reporter inland, hermine lost a bit of its power but very little of its punch. A Tropical Storm as it pushed into georgia. Showing signs that it would continue to be a problem. Theres probably 20 streets that are closed right now because of the rain at high tide. Reporter trees and power lines are down here as well. As the system picked up speed moving into the carolinas, where theres a growing concern about tornadoes, and the damage hermine could inflict as it moves up the coast. We have a team of meteorologists throughout our region. Glenn and sheena are in the first alert weather center. Tim furlong is in delaware, and George Spencer is watching things from the air. Sheena has a look at where hermine is right now. Hermine has in fact picked up a little bit of speed. Its moving along South Carolina at 20 miles an hour. Sustained winds near the center 50 miles an hour. Last night made landfall right near the tallahassee area at 11 00 p. M. As a cat 1. Now its downgraded to a Tropical Storm. Lots of rain, still a lot of wind. Rain extending into southern parts of virginia, moving into virginia, which is just to our south, the first band of rainfall here. Its about 360, maybe almost 400 miles from the center. So that is one large area of rain. So well start to see it move into part of the area tomorrow later in the day. Conditions will start to deteriorate across the entire weekend. Heres ooh look at the rainfall rates. Almost 3 inches an hour. Good news is, this rain isnt sitting in one area for an hour. The main flooding concern will be coming from the onshore wind during high tide for us. Take a look at the buoy data off the shore of South Carolina. Closer to the center, winds gusting near 60 miles an hour in some spots. Wave heights up to about 18 feet, a little bit offshore. Not very far offshore. You can see how much its stirring up the waves there. Now near orangeburg, around the center, winds gusting near 45 miles an hour. Another look at South Carolina, winds on land. Locally, the center of the storm will be offshore. The gustiest winds for us will be at the jersey shore and delaware beaches. The rain, there you see it just to our south. Right now were dry. But as we zoom in here, heres what storm ranger 10 is showing you. The only radar youll see on wheels. The only radar we can actually move around. It has picked up the very first heavy band of rain, or at least on the northern leading edge of this storm right around elizabeth city. Thats where we drove the truck to, thats where its parked. And well continue utilizing this as we go throughout the storm and your Labor Day Weekend. Tropical storm warning for us, for all of the jersey shore, all of the delaware beaches, up into the delaware bay, and that is where we have another concern for some tidal flooding. The delaware bay, possibly the Delaware River. Well be watching that very closely over the weekend. Tropical storm conditions could give us winds gusting near 60 miles an hour. The storm has the most updated track as well. Also how it will be affecting your Holiday Weekend. Chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz standing by with a look at that. Sheena, this is absolutely the worst timing that you could possibly get. And this is an unusual track for a storm. So a lot of people may not be taking this seriously enough. Heres a nice picture at the shore right now. We have some of those clouds that are starting to move in. And yes, those clouds are from hermine. Hundred treads as and hundreds away. 50mileanhour winds. And the track just within the past hour is updated, very close to the coast. So enough of the circulation is offshore to keep this strong Tropical Storm. As it goes out into the warm ocean, the gulf stream waters, in some cases over 80 degrees, it could strengthen, even into a hurricane. Or a strong noreaster. Either way, its not moving much, from sunday, into monday. Thats hardly moving at all. Maybe a little bit of a loop, a circle it could make, getting closer to our beaches. And that is trouble. Here we are 75 miles an hour, 2 00 p. M. Monday. Thats hurricane strength. This is what happens. This is part of the problem. Weve got hundreds and hundreds of miles of onshore wind coming into delaware, coming into south jersey. Depending on where this thing stalls. And we have to get the wind coming out of the northwest to get to allow the water to go down. And it cant. As the storm gets closer to us, the winds increase out of the northeast. So were not going to be out of this flood threat at the shore for days. Into the middle of next week. Heres the precipitation along with the track. And you can see a little bit of light rain perhaps up toward philadelphia by saturday night. But theres going to be a tremendous gradient from heavy rain at the shore to nothing in reading, for example, at the same time. Right across the area. Thats why we do neighborhood weather. Minor coastal flooding saturday as the rain develops in the afternoon, moderate coastal flooding sunday. Im afraid theres going to be major coastal flooding by labor day itself. Glenn, thank you so much. Count on the nbc 10 app to track hermine this weekend. You can get live radar, the latest forecasts, and weather alerts for your neighborhood or your holiday destination. Now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. Well, hermine is the big story. The Tropical Storm now moving through South Carolina. It was downgraded after it made landfall last night as a category 1 hurricane in florida. Its moving to the northeast at 20 miles an hour. Its picked up speed here. We expect it to slow down quite a bit which will be causing big problems. Winds sustained 50 miles an hour near the center of the storm. And the rain is mostly to the north and northeast. Now, the track is going to take it closer to us as we go into the weekend. So saturday afternoon, just off the coast of southern virginia, possibly the Tropical Storm still. Pretty strong winds still as we go to sunday, monday, tuesday. Look at that, in the span of about four days, theres not too Much Movement here. So it could be stalling, kind of meandering around until something finally steers it away. So at that point, over the weekend, it could be sitting just offshore which will be giving us a strong onshore wind which is not good for coastal communities. We have a big threat of flooding for the shore, the delaware bay, possibly the Delaware River. I think the worst will be the back bay. Tropical storm conditions likely with a Tropical Storm warning for the jersey shore. The delaware beaches, extending into the delaware bay. Well have to watch the Delaware River as well. Winds gusting 60 miles an hour, could be sustained 40 to 50 miles an hour. Now were looking down at elizabeth city, north carolina. This is storm ranger 10. This is our mobile radar, radar on wheels. This is the only place youre going to find that. So we have driven it from the philadelphia area down to north carolina, because we wanted to see the leading edge of the rain, and that is going to be moving into virginia here very soon. Thats where you see the yellow right around elizabeth city. Thats showing us some of the heaviest rain right on the Northern Edge of the rain from Tropical Storm hermine. So now were taking a wider view out. We are dry most of tomorrow, could stay dry depending where you live. Then the rain will start to move to the north. And parts of the area will be seeing rain moving in through the afternoon tomorrow. But it is just to our south moving into virginia.
