Bathroom after the phone call he made with 911, it sounded as if he was communicating with other people who were involved with it. He made a statement that the police, if the police come in, theyre going to attack, because its okay, because we got the snipers outside. Whoever he spoke to, some Police Officers, maybe he was just deranged or talking to himself. But i honestly feel like, i dont think he was able to pull that off all by himself, that one man all by himself. And because he said he had snipers outside. And the first shots that you heard, there was so many shots going off. Thats why it sounded like it was part of the music. Thats why i couldnt believe it was gunshots happening. He actually started backing into the bathroom stall itself when the police busted in, that myself, and my friends was inside of. And i could see his foot scooting back as he heard the Police Outside and the last thing that i heard before the police said, move away from the walls. He said, hey, you, to someone on the floor inside the bathroom and shot them. Shot another person, and then shot another person, who happened to be directly behind me who im told through they shielded me with their own body to make sure i wasnt hit. I dont know who that person is. I dont know the name of that person. But if theyre watching somewhere, thank you, thank you for saving my life literally. Reporter patience carter coming so close to death. It is interesting to hear through carters words the gunmans phone conversations. We now know from the first shots to the standoff with police, it lasted for three hours. But to her, it seemed like she was waiting for hours upon hours for the police to arrive. Ill have more coming up at 5 30. Shes so strong, she provides such a compelling description. Its a unique interview. Thats why were showing it to you in chunks every half hour. Shes injured, her friends are injured, she lost a good friend all the while people around her are dead. You cant imagine the physical toll she will constantly be reminded of with the injury to her leg and the emotional toll of everything that she saw in those three hours in that nightclub. Thats what you call strength right there. 100 . Thank you for bringing it to us. Today we heard from other survivors who are still recovering in the hospital and from the doctors who worked so hard to save everyone injured inside that nightclub. George spencer joins us now with their story. Hes live in orlando for us. George . Reporter keith, much of this citys medical response centered on just a single hospital. 44 different victims brought to that one hospital in a span of just hours. And today, we heard from one of those survivors who applauded their really unscripted team work and recalled an Orlando Police officer who may have saved his life. I cant remember his face or name, but im grateful for him. He looked at me and made sure im alive. He grabbed my hand and said this is the only way i can take you out. In a way, he was one of the lucky ones. By the time s. W. A. T. Teams stormed the pulse nightclub, he had been shot in the leg three times but was still alive. That mystery officer dragged him out, past other bodies, scraping across piles of shattered glass, and dropped him safe in a parking lot across the street. I look over and theres bodies everywhere. Reporter in a stroke of tremendous good fortune, that parking lot and the nightclub are less than half a mile, just six blocks from the orlando regions largest trauma unit. We didnt know quite what was about to hit us. Reporter on sunday morning, the arrivals began piling up faster than his team had ever seen. Incoming by the truckload, lined up, bleeding in the hallways. In all, 44 injured people. Our amazing nurses and techs were putting them on structures and rolling them in to us, and telling us another patient is here, another patient is here. Reporter lead doctors called in backup telling each one this is not a drill. Even at 3 00 a. M. , dozens of additional nurses and surgeons rushed into work and Emergency Departments suddenly as crowded as doctors say as todays jam packed News Conference. This is about the level of crowdedness that it felt in the Emergency Department that night. And people in pain, people worrying about their loved ones. People not knowing where their loved ones are. Reporter nine of the patients who arrived that night died within just minutes of their arrival. And six of those victims are still in a critical state, to the point that doctors told us they could not rule out the possibility that the final death toll from this attack might not still tick one or two victims higher. Coming up, when the rain will get here and what it will look like over the weekend. Thats next. To decision 2016 now. The Democratic National convention is dealing with the fallout of a security breach. The hackers targeted donald trump. Russian government hackers breached its computer networks, gaining access to Opposition Research on the Presumptive Republican nominee. That research could be used against trump during the president ial campaign. The dnc says it does not appear the hackers accessed any financial or personal information. Hillary clinton attacked trump while campaigning in pennsylvania today. She told a crowd in pittsburgh that trumps response to the massacre in orlando was filled with bizarre rants and accused him of telling lies. Trump said the gunman was from afghan when he was born in new york. Clinton also said it was shameful that trump accused president obama of being on the side of the terrorists. Right now, clinton is getting a boost in the polls, according to the new nbc poll, clinton is leading trump by seven points among registered voters. Clinton has 49 to trumps 42 . This comes after clinton became the democratic partys presumptive nominee last week. Joining us again to break down the president ial race are jim schultz for the republicans and Mark Alderman for the democrats. A lot going on today, to think we havent even talked about the two big issues now dominating the political discussion, gun control, terrorism. Today, president obama called for an assault weapons ban, which Hillary Clinton supports. And donald trump opposes. We want to give both of you the chance to weigh in. Jim, lets start with you and your thoughts. What happened in orlando was a terrible tragedy, a terrible act of terrorism and the worst since 9 11 that this country has suffered. And for the democrats to come out now and try to score political points with a weapons ban is a little disingenuous, especially given the fact they had the presidency, the house, and the senate in 2009 and 2010. This was never part of their agenda. This is merely an opportunity for them to score political points. The republicans have taken real leadership on the issue of protecting folks from guns by way of background checks and our own senator pat toomey put forward legislation that was killed by the democrats. Jim, after sandy hook, 54 republican senators voted against stopping people on the terrorist watch list from buying guns. 54 republican senators voted against stopping people on the terrorist watch list from buying guns. No sane person can argue that this person needs assault weapons to be sold to anyone with a drivers license to keep this country safe. How many more deaths, jim, will it take before the Prolife Party says no to the nra . Again, the guy taking leadership on this issue was pat toomey, pushing forward legislation that would have taken guns out of the hands of folks on the terrorist watch list. Where have the democrats been . I respect what senator toomey did. Your party kid it. Lets move on to the second question. Donald trump has proposed a ban on muslim immigration in the past and brought it up again. Hes faced a lot of criticism from democrats and republicans. Mark, well start with you. How do you see this debate playing out in the president ial race . Keith, orlando was the first test of Donald Trumps ability to lead this country in a time of crisis. He got an f minus. He doubled down on the unconstitutional muslim ban. He accused the president of the United States of complicity in the terrible slaughter. He lied about the birthplace of the murderer. This man is not qualified to be president. What he did do was come out very strongly and take positions and point out the fact that we have that this administration has been woefully deficient in leadership as it pertains to isis. Whether its a bad deal with iran, a botched issue in libya and countless other issues relative to foreign failure, where hes been a failure and Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, donald trump is pointing that out. As you know, back in the fall when the syrian issue came up, there was bipartisan support in the congress where he had veto proof majorities that were passing legislation that would have limited who came into this country from states that harbor terrorism. He doesnt talk about going to congress. He talks about imposing it by executive order. It is unconstitutional. It is racist. And it is unamerican. Obama knows a whole lot about executive orders and going beyond the scope of his authority. Donald trump is preventing the Washington Post from covering his events. He was upset over a headline that said donald trump seems to connect president obama to orlando shooting. Here are the comments they were referring to. He doesnt get it. Or he gets it better than anybody understands. Either one is unacceptable. Mark, well let you weigh in first. Jim, what is he afraid of . What is he afraid of . Is he so insecure that an unflattering story requires him to ban one of the most prestigious newspapers in the country . And what comes next when he reads a book he doesnt like, are we going to burn it . Weve seen that before, too. This man has no respect for the constitution of the United States of america. The muslim ban is unconstitutional. The comments on the judge are unamerican. Hes unfit, jim. In the primary, mark, donald trump relied on one thing the National News media to get his message out. He didnt have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to get elected in the primary, to get nominated in the primary process. He was more accessible than anyone as it pertains to talk show circuit and news shows and giving press conferences. Its been Hillary Clinton thats been inaccessible to the news media. The fact that the news media distorts some of Donald Trumps comments for purposes of the headline and clicks on a computer screen is just out of line and to the extent he doesnt want them right there front and center daytoday, thats his right. The Clinton Campaign has not banned a news organization. Trump has. Thank you so much for the spirited debate, mark on the left, jim on the right. We really appreciate your time. Patience carter and her two best friends were looking for a fun place to spend the night in orlando. By the next morning, all three became victims at the hands of a shooter. The gunman entered the bathroom and was shooting his machine gun. So were all scrambling around in the bathroom, screaming at the top of our lungs. Today, we hear patience tell her story. Tonight, we want to share it with you. Shes 20 years old. And to say this young woman from philadelphia is wise beyond her years is an understatement. Weve been sharing her words all afternoon long, for good reason, too. Were joined now with the next part of her story. Its really remarkable the detail that she goes through to provide exact hi what happened moment by moment. Reporter shes clear and focused and talking about this. And what she went through is beyond imagination. After police shot the gunman, it was not over. Patience and the others feared a different threat was about to kill them. They punched through the wall, and they started engaging in gunfire after they told him to put your weapon down. He didnt, so they engaged in gunfire, they shot him dead. And from that point, because the walls had exploded the pipes, there was water starting to rise. I was thinking, if i dont get if they dont get to me soon, i might drown sitting here in this water, this pile of bloody water. But i was able to get the debris off my face and push myself from underneath the stall wall and come out the other side where the handicap bathroom was and i was able to sit up and pull my leg underneath who was just killed beside me. I was asking tejera, are you shot . She said yeah, she got side in her side. Akya was laying there lifeless. According to the africanamerican male who was luckily unharmed, who was not shot at all, he checked her pulse at the same time and said shes still breathing. So that was the last thing she said to me, shes breathing. So when the s. W. A. T. Members started coming in, we said theres snipers outside. And they were asking, was there more bombers inside . We said no, he was the last one. So we were all raising our hand and the s. W. A. T. Team member picked me up, i put most of my weight on him to keep the weight off of my leg. And i saw akyas phone and i picked it up, because i believed that her pulse was still going and i would be able to give that phone back to her. Once we got back once we got back to the hospital. So they pulled me out the wall. I couldnt walk. So the s. W. A. T. Member had to drag me through the grass with my leg, its pretty bad, with you they were able to get it back together. The bullet had shattered my femur bone in my right leg and went through my left leg. So i didnt even know i was shot in my left leg until they cut my clothes off in the ambulance and told me you have another bullet wound under your left thigh. Patience was composed for the entire time she spoke about the ordeal to the media. But a few minutes later, she couldnt hold it any longer. After the News Conference wrapped up, the weight of her story hit her and she breaks down. She lets go of some of that emotion while a doctor comforts her. Coming up at 6 00, more compelling words straight from patience carter. Youll hear what she asked from god after seeing so many bodies and not even being sure that this was completely over. But for 20 minutes she talks about this so clearly. And you can understand how this really impacts her, how it hit her. But she was able to hold off. At 20 years, shes so strong. Its amazing she remembers all of that. It is so fresh and almost surprising she didnt block so much of it out. Amazing and courageous woman. Such a compelling interview. We are breaking it down in both pieces so that you get to see every single moment of it at home. You can watch the whole thing on nbc10. Com for yourself. Well see you again in half hour.
