This is at busy day for pope francis, where he continues to be bottlenecked. All of them holding their camera phones out. Generations. That bottleneck wont last very long, because most of those roads have been cleared. As he continues this historic tour of the united states, from the halls of power at the United Nations to the classroom in east harlem, a live look at pope francis as you saw, as he was just leaving in his fiat. Zero. He paid tribute to the victims of 9 11. He paid tribute with a prayer service, a busy day in new york, that will end before a crowd of thousands at Madison Square garden. And tomorrow, it is philadelphias turn to receive the pontiff. Heres a live look at the ben franklin parkway. Its expected to be jammed with the faithful as the pope brings his message to the city of brotherly love. One thing is for certain there, you might be able to tell if you look down at that image, the barricades are up. The final stage needs some finishing touches. Take a look at the countdown clock, just 16 hours until the pope lands in philadelphia to begin his twoday visit to our area. It will soon be our turn. Nbc 10s George Spencer is live along the parkway with the citys race to the finish line. George . Reporter jacqueline, were standing here in eakins oval. We want to take a look at whats happening on the ground here. Things have quieted down a bit, but you can see some of the final work thats going on is the workers trying to get the seating right for thousands of Ticket Holders who will have the best seats in front of that main stage. Up on the stage this afternoon, weve been hearing the sound check, pieces of music, and right now you can see what pierce the overseers keeping an eye on all of this. That stage where pope francis is going to be surrounded by aretha franklin, the fray, andreas bow chellie will be performing. Now, this area has been a beehive of activity, but in the neighborhoods around this area, things already strangely quiet. Take a look at this video from a couple of blocks north of here. Thats where we saw streets that were really largely empty. The parked cars are gone. Its closed to traffic. Throughout the day today, we saw pedestrians who live nearby and Law Enforcement. But at the old philly alehouse this afternoon, the owner there was well stocked anyway. Shes convinced that what were seeing right now was the calm before the storm. They tell us theyre ready for huge papal crowds tomorrow. Going to be prepared and ready for them and get ready for the chaos and all the outoftowners. You certainly have plenty of supplies . Full supplies, and were welcoming all the people in philly. Reporter back to live pictures now. You can really see how grand that large tv screen is behind the stage here. Obviously, this stage is going to be really the focal point of out here at eakins oval tomorrow night. White seats, but the crowds, eyesight. So it is going to be an exattractive extra extravaganz extravaganza. The final preparations are continuing. And of course the papal mass, really, perhaps, the real main event, which is happening then on sunday Late Afternoon early evening. Lots going on out here. Were live along the parkway. Im George Spencer, nbc 10 news. A thunderous applause, a standing ovation greeted pope francis, before he graeds the General Assembly at the United Nations this morning. In a speech, he spoke out against abortion, called for the differences between men and women to be recognized, and demanded rights for the poor and forgotten. Those who suffer are often caused in great poverty and deprived of all rights. Its the fifth time a pope has addressed the United Nations, but for the first time ever, the vatican flag was flown alongside other member states. And the pope, of course, wherever he goes is drawing big crowds. Checkey beckford is outside central park where the pope will be next. Checkey, so much anticipation. Reporter the anticipation is growing and so are the crowds. Take a look behind me in columbus circle. The sidewalk is packed. 80,000 people waiting on a lotto to get inside. Were told there were about 10,000 people who were still not insi inside. Take a look at video from earlier as the pope made his way outdoor, visiting the 9 11 memorial. So many people touched by this, an interfaith meeting with people from different faiths. Something that so many people weve talked to say they truly appreciate about pope francis. His wanting to bring people from so many different backgrounds closer to the catholic church. Back out here live, i want to show you [ inaudible ] winding its way down central park. Outside here around the fountain, look at the crowd there. The crowd that continues to grow. These people will likely not even get a chance to see the pope, from what were being told by police. But they say theyll stand here hoping to get a glimpse of him, as possible, as he comes through the park. Again, so much excitement and anticipation as the pope is expected to be here hopefully within the next half hour. Guys, back to you. Checkey beckford, live in new york city, thank you. So much excitement building in new york. Last night, we saw pope francis as he entered st. Patricks cathedral. Youre looking at live pictures of the motorcade. Now hes headed you can see the popemobile right there. Both vehicles have become quite popular. The fiat and the wrangler there. He makes a pretty quick transition. You can see the number of nypd stationed out there. The security detail is massive. If there was one thing we can gather from that last live shot from checkey beckford, the sights and sounds of new york city, nothing has changed there. Thousands of people waiting to get inside or along this motorcade. The wrangler sits and we wait for pope francis to arrive in that fiat 500l. What you first saw was the first procession coming through, a security detail. You can only imagine just how intense this is to try to make sure everyone stays safe. Of course there are security checkpoints to enter central park. About 80,000 people will be lining up along this route to actually see him. And we know 80,000 people, the ones who were able to snag that invite. 93,000 people actually entered the lottery to win a pair of tickets to the popes procession through new yorks central park 843acre park. And anyone whos been there know how magnificent and aweinspiring central park is. And im sure the pope will be taken aback by it. No question. Philadelphia is ready to shine for the pope as well. Thats right, cars are off the street, barricades are up, security checkpoints are in place. Nbc 10s mitch flocker has a birds eye view from nbc 10. How were the streets on what would normally be a busy friday rush hour . Keith and jacqueline, the streets are fairly empty at this point. Were hovering just above broad street, a couple of blocks north of city hall. I want to show you the security checkpoints that have been set up here. This is a great example of one. This one, as you can see, its a tented structure. Weve seen everyone from local to national and federal Police Agencies servicing the center. We have also seen drugsniffing weve seen bombsniffing dogs and also some bags that have been confiscated as people have been entering this secure area. The area have been secure since 10 00 p. M. , when the secret service shut down the heart of the city, where as many as 300,000 people may enter to see the pope. As you zoom out, you can see some of these cell towers that have been put out. Weve been reporting throughout the week, that the secret service and the federal agencies in charge after security, they may actually be using some of these cell towers for their own use, while the public will have others. We have been asking also, whether or not the secret service will monitor cells, calls, as well as texts and they have been reluctant to say whether or not that has been happening. But security in full effect high above center city. We are live at sky force 10. Im mitch blocker, nbc 10 news. Everyone is keeping their eyes on the sky for the papal weekend. Heres a live look outside, the papal parkway. Lets get to glen hurricane schwartz. The chances of rain, what are they . They continue to go down. They werent very high, to begin with. A couple of things of concern, the possible of really hot weather or really wet weather. That flag, a sign of the cooler wind coming off of the ocean. Certainly cloudy out there, but the rain not making a whole lot of progress to the north. Most staying well to the south in parts of carolina are just getting pounded with it. But as we go through tomorrow, theres virtually no chance of rain but we expect a lot of high temperatures into the 70s. The sevenday in a few minutes. Coming up, more on the message hes already spreading and the impact its having on the people who hear it. And inside the command the work thats being done now to keep people safe tomorrow and sunday. Manual separation of irish pride and heritage at the jersey shore is expected to be even bigger this year because of the popes visit to philadelphia. Im Ted Greenberg with the story, coming up. Theres some other big news today. A move that took many people by surprise. House Speaker John Boehner resigned there congress. Nbc 10 ease Jim Rosenfield is live at the Digital Operation Center with the reasons why the speaker says he took the sudden action. Jim, whatd he say . Keith, it was an emotional News Conference this afternoon. Boehner saying he felt he had to resign, that staying would cause the house of representatives irreparable harm. Boehner has been under pressure from conservatives in his party who have accused him of failing to fight the Obama Administration on issues important to the gop. Some vowed to oust him if he worked to fund the government or stop a government shutdown, without defunding planned parenthood. The speaker says he wasnt forced from his job, that he was planning to resign at the end of the year, they. This morning i woke up and i said my prayers, as i always do, and i decided, you know, todays the day im going to do this. Its as simple as that. Meanwhile, attendees here at the Family Research counsels voter valley summit cheered there. They stood in ovation after senator marco rubio passed along fact, stepping down as of october. Right now smart money is on the Kevin Mccarthy from california to secede boehner. Nothing is certain at this that Tea Party Conservatives candidate. We will be watching. Live in our digital operations center, Jim Rosenfield, nbc 10 news. Back to you. Heres a live look at the popes motorcade in central park. You can see it right there. The pope made his transition from the fiat into the wrangler. 80,000 people are in central park witnessing this. And they are all screened. They have all gone through those metal detectors. About 93,000 people entered a lottery. 80,000 are allowed in there. And you can see some fences there, some barriers. You can see people to the right of your screen. There is also an 8foottall security fence. Theyre calling it an anticlimb fence along the parks center drive north of 59th street and avenue of the americas. That is what people go through. And they know that if you were in that secured zone, you have gone through the metal detectors and you are safe to be inside central park. Its tough to say how many people were along this route. The rows of people here go several back to the point where you cant even see them. I was looking at some nbc reporters, theyre tweeting up there, theyre taking pictures of the sky saying, weve got overcast skies, wonder fg its going to rain. One reporter took a picture of a rainbow overhead. Here live for you, the camera, of course, is jostled around, because it appears to be in the back of a moving car. You can see pope francis there in the back of that white jeep wrangler. Something very specific to this pope. You can see the bulletproof glass going up the front, the ceiling and back of the jeep wrangler. Otherwise, you see direct axis on either side to pope francis. This is quite a different site than what we saw last night, when pope francis was on fifth avenue. Normally, a very busy, bustling fifth avenue before he entered st. Patricks cathedral. You didnt see this imagine at all. You can see secret Service Running alongside that wrangler. Last night on fifth avenue, it was very protected in terms of the visual that you could see. There were almost shields more than fences, big, black shields that were 8feet high as well. A lot of people did not get a glimpse of pope francis, he was so heavily protected in new york city. Now, here in central pork, they definitely have much more access and can see him, even if theyre 20, 30, 50 feet back alongside central parks road. 80,000 people, many of them Ticket Holders inside and outside central park. Thats where theyre moving right now. You can see the security detail on either side. Moving at a brisk pace. One thing we saw in washington, d. C. Were some of the security details, running over to the side of the crowd, grabbing children, bringing them to the pontiff, so he can kiss their heads or hug them. Wec we havent seen that just yet. We imagine this is a bit of a tight schedule. Hes got to get down to Madison Square garden. And that hasnt stopped this pope in the past. And of course, on arguably one of the most important stops of his trip, at that Catholic School in east harlem, where hes coming from now, listened to them in the classroom and spoke with them in the auditorium there of that school. But right no what youre watching is a live picture. We apologize for the camera shaking around. Its on the back of a vehicle. Well make sure you we bring you these live pictures as the pope continues to make his way south, down the island of amanda, through central park, greeting thousands of people who are meeting him there. Its always apparent he feeds off the energy of people and hes getting that right now in central park. Well bring you back to live pictures of the pope going through central park in just a moment. But first to philadelphia, the streets in philly are quiet today in advance of the popes arrival. Nbc 10s Harry Hairston has been checking ining out the sit and joins us live from the parkway. What does it look like where you are right now . Things are quiet where we are right now, but theres a lot of activity thats still going on behind the scenes and in front of you. Its always about keeping you safe. Now, just moments ago, we got video of whats happening with people trying to get on to the parkway. I want to share that with you, as were taking a look at a metal detector and they are doing a very good job of tightening security and looking through bags. We notice that theyve been going through each and every bag, even taking out womens purses, opening those purses, taking a look inside, mens wallets are being opened as well, exposing whether you have drivers licenses, credit cards. Something you normally dont see when you go through a tsa checkpoint at an airport. This is a lot tighter. But its only taking folks roughly 15 to 20 seconds to get through this line, as you can basically hear a little bit one of the tsa agents say, you have to take everything out. Take out your cell phones, they are turning those on to make sure those are exactly as they appear to be, that is a cell phone, a working cell phone, the same with any other electric device whatsoever. Now, they have been doing an excellent job, and ill tell you just about everyone there is from local, state, or federal level. Were looking at tsa, u. S. Customs as well are all helping out and some of these are being monitored by philadelphia police. Just some other information to tell you about today that we got handed over to us, is that there has been many calls about bags being left behind, some suspicious packages. Philadelphia police said they checked out all of those. No problems. One final note i want to let you know about, 160 k9 dogs will be here sniffing out whether they can find any type soft problems whatsoever. So, right now, things are still moving quite smoothly. Again, tomorrow, thats when the major crowd will be here. Things might move just a little bit slower, but wehll see. Reporting live, Harry Hairston, back to you in the studio. A live picture back in new york city. The popes motorcade making its way through central park. Hes spoken to the United Nations, visited the national 9 11 memorial museum. Hes talked to Catholic School students and its just 5 24. Now, look at your screen. Tens of thousands of people on either side of the pavement, watching the pope as he makes his way south through central park with scores of nypd and security detail in its wake. This papal procession is only about to last about 20 minutes. If youre familiar with new york, well give you an idea. Central park is huge. It really is massive. 843 acres. To give you an idea of where exactly this papal procession is taking place, it is going from 72nd and 60th street on central parks west drive. A ticket and a valid i. D. Is required for anyone who is in there. And guests were allowed to start entering there at 11 00 a. M. But they could not be any later than 3 30 if they want to be standing here right now. They started ereacting fences and those high barriers days ago in new york city. And many of those residents who live right in that area of manhattan, right near central park, many were frustrated about the earliness of the security measures they implemented and these fences being erected. Many saying, this was overkill. But secret Service Started putting out the huge black fence from which you dont see from this vantage point, from 59th to 81st street. A pretty large area that had that high fence. Can we raise the volume to we can get a glimpse of what we can expect, the throngs of people that are out there. If youve ever been to new york city, you know its a constant buzz, the city never sleeps, but right now it must be at a fevered pitch as the pontiff makes his way down past what i can imagine is screaming people there on either side. I wish you could hear the sound. Because often when you hear that, it creates such an added energy. We even heard sound last night inside st. Patricks cathedral, the privileged who were allowed in there, and to hear the conversation and the screams, really interesting. Hundreds of being flanked by the secret service there, trying to make sure he remains safe. To give you an idea of how many people are in the city, protecting him, there are 7,000 Uniformed Police officers on the streets in new york. Along with the Uniformed Police officers you see, there are also many who are not in uniform. There are undercover officers. So the secret service an out there for days, theyve been canvassing the area, making sure everyone is going through that screening process. But a lot of people you might not look at and think they are police officers. A lot of undercover as well. 30 rolling into his entourage, including a police chief and two swiss guards as well. Were about ten minutes into his trip through central park, its expected to last 20 to 25 minutes. And of course his destination is a papal mass that will be held where else because Madison Square garden. Well bring that to you live. In the meantime, well show you those live pictures. Stay with us. Nbc 10 is committed to bring you every moment pope francis spends on his historic trip here in the u. S. Well be right back. Im really curious how many of them are stationed all around that city and also all around philadelphia, too. The pontiff is making his way through central park in new york city. Tens of thousands of people greeted him and now hes on his way to a papal mass at Madison Square garden. The holy father was greeted by a chorus of student voices when he arrived at a school in harlem. He recalled the words of reverend dr. Martin luther king jr. I have a dream speech and he called drchl king an inspiration. And tomorrow its time to say goodbye to new york and hello to philadelphia. The crews arent fighting any crowds. For them, it was an easy decision to spend the weekend at the 42th annual irish fall festival rather than in philadelph philadelphia. Too many crowds and weve been coming down here for 18, 19 years. We normally come down anyway, but we came to avoid the craziness in the city. A lot of others apparently did as well, driving more people to this celebration of Irish Heritage earlier than usual. Today is just unbelievable. This is by far the biggest crowd weve ever seen on a friday of irish weekend. For a friday, this is very, very crowded. Usually it doesnt start until tonight. Reporter the festival normally draws up to 200,000 people over the course of the entire weekend. But officials expect this years event to far exceed that figure.
