Arrested. People were seen running across the tarmac. Police had their guns drawn. This is happening at ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International airport, about three miles southwest of downtown ft. Lauderdale. The shooting took place at baggage claim inside terminal 2. Multiple Law Enforcement sources verify the shooter as Esteban Santiago e. Hes 26. He was born in new jersey but lived in the alaska for a time. Multiple sources say he had a military i. D. On him at the time of the arrest. No motive is known as of yet of the attack. Were seeing this video taken by passengers inside the airport where the shooting took place. You see bags scattered about and people wandering around moments after the shooting. That video was taken at terminal 2. You see a layout. Terminal 2 is in red. A closer look inside. This was unfolding inside baggage claim, the airport has suspended as of right now all service. We have also learned within the past 30 minutes that the suspect was on a canadian flight. Authorities say he checked his gun in a bag and then loaded it in a bathroom. Again, five dead, eight wounded in todays shooting at the airport in ft. Lauderdale. Were going to continue to monitor the situation all afternoon and evening. Reporter hey, guys, right now i can tell you im in front of 595. This is the highway that normally at this time is in the middle of rush hour would be packed with vehicles. You can see Police Activity right behind me. The roadway has been closed for quite some time. Also, i want to show you some photos that were taken earlier today, just an hour ago by one of the mechanics working inside one of the hangars that do Maintenance Services to the airplanes. He told me at one point they were told to stop work because passengers were being evacuated off the airplanes. This is happening on airplanes that were previously waiting on the tarmac, taxiing. Those passengers were escorted through those hangars and he told me some of them had their hands up. It wasnt clear if they were following instructions from authorities or if they had reason to believe they could possibly be shot at. So now i want to give you another live look here at the airport, youre going to be able to see me now. This is part of the runway behind me. At this moment you can see heavy Police Activity speeding by on their way to the airport. This has been going on over the last hours ive been here, seeing several units rushing by. S. W. A. T. Trucks as you saw right now. Im going to show you some of the people waiting around me. This is not place where you would normally stop. However, some of these people were trying to catch flights or trying to pick up people from the airport. We have Ricardo Sousa who was telling me he was headed on his way to brazil. Tell me what happened with your flight . What have you heard . I heard its been canceled now and we are waiting here. Reporter has the airline said anything to you . We were trying to call the airline, but we they didnt attend to us. Reporter knowing there was a shooting in the airport, do you feel lucky in a way you werent there yet when this happened . Right now at 4 00, ready for round two. Mother nature could dump several inches of snow at the jersey shore and delaware beaches by this time tomorrow. Getting milk and bread, hunker down. Were bracing for bitter cold. Temperatures in the teens. Winters one two punch as we get ready for the weekend. Whenever. Where and how much . Those are the questions weve been asking about tomorrows snow. Lets take a live look at the jersey shore now. Also delaware, we know that those areas will likely see the first flakes and the most snow after this is all over with. Thats why our nbc 10 Bureau Reporters are in those areas right now finding out how people are getting ready for whats to come. Well get to you guys in just a minute. Lets begin our coverage with glenn hurricane schwartz tracking tomorrows snow. No doubt the coastal areas will get hit the hardest. We have a first alert out for the areas just inland in new jersey and delaware from those beaches. Mainly, well, just about all day tomorrow this is not just a few hours, like last nights. Heavy snow totalled six inches or more at the coast with dangerous travel at the peak of this. You can see how much moisture were talking about. Compared to what we saw last night that was coming in from the west. This is coming up from the southwest. Theres a lot more moisture coming with it. Its also going to last longer. 5 00 a. M. To 9 00 a. M. , snow begins at the shore, the heaviest snow im expecting 1 00 a. M. And heaviest snow in the inland areas 11 00 a. M. To 1 00 p. M. Then well see the snow moving offshore between 3 00 and 6 00. Look at the time table here, tomorrow morning, early, not much going on. But the snow area spreads up. Areas north and west, further north and west, you get nothing out of this. And then theres the snow moving out, temperatures very cold. How much snow . Six inches or more, Cape May County down toward the delaware beaches. Three to five just inland. We drop it as we head toward philadelphia with around one inch. Well get more specific with the snow totals in your neighborhood coming up a little bit later. All right. As you heard glenn say areas along the coast will see the most snow. As we go to saturday afternoon, it feels like 9 in trenton and burlington. Its feeling colder in the afternoon than the morning. Tomorrow night, now were in Single Digits and getting close to zero. Youve got some zeros here, potstown and west chester, one in doyles town. Five in philadelphia. Sunday is the worst of this. Nbc 10s Randy Gyllenhaal is live where that shooting happened three years ago in west philadelphia. This is the Largest Police settlement in the citys history. He was dropping off a cheesebericheese burger when he was confronted and shot multiple times by plain clothes philly officers. You can see the marks of blood. Reporter riddled with bullet holes, shattered glass still in the seat. The delivery drivers car is preserved as evidence almost three years later. A Young College kid who was trying to make a couple of bucks to try to put himself through college. Reporter his lawyer says Philip Holland had no idea the armed men who approached his car that night were plain clothes philly officers. They were responding to a shots fire call a few blocks away. He thought he was in danger and was likely going to be robbed since he was carrying cash. Reporter he try today drive off. They start to shoot. Reporter the officers opened fire, hitting him in the face. He was unarmed, a case of mistaken identity. Fragments of bullets remain inside of phils brain. Thats led to him having a significant seizure disorder. Reporter holland sued the department and today the city announced a 4. 4 million settlement, the largest in city history for a police shooting. As part of the settlement, plain clothes officers must undergoing new training. Cities will do videotaped training of their plains Clothes Police officers which will make the community safer. Reporter and as part of that settlement, the city says they will also implement the new training procedures in the next few months. The city released a statement calling this an unfortunate regrettable series of events. We have breaking news out of washington. Tall intelligence officials have released their report on russias alleged interference in the u. S. President ial election. According to the report, russia clearly interfered with the election by hacking democratic groups. The report also says Vladmir Putin ordered the hacking. Last month, the u. S. Nounced sanctions against russia in response. Intelligence officials are in new york today to meet with the president elect about that report on russia. They presented him evidence, they say, showed that russia interfered. Donald trump has continued to challenge that finding, saying today there is absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election. The worst of the cold comes on sunday. Were seeing some returns on radar in virginia. The snow not reaching the ground there yet. But you can also see this is a pretty large area and theres a very sharp Northern Edge there. Thats going to be our issue tomorrow. Theres going to be heavy snow on one side, and nothing on the other. In the meantime, theres a blizzard warning for norfolk, virginia. We have more snow all the way back to louisiana this area of snow is potentially a factor tomorrow, too. This Northern Edge moving to the east could potentially bring a little bit more snow to philadelphia if that holds true. Now, the timeline we have the snow beginning at the shore 5 00 to 9 00 a. M. Its coming in early and going to hang around for a while. The heaviest snow at the shore 9 00 a. M. To 1 00 p. M. The inland areas, more limited area with any heavy snow, and the snow moves offshore by 6 00. Thats long time. And its cold. Look how cold it is. 4 30, the snow just Getting Started toward the shore, spreading inland. This means that the snowflakes are going to be very light, very fluffy type of snow. Youd be able to just blow it away off your car. Its going to be so fluffy there with the 22 temperature. And the darker colors indicating heavier snow. There it is, 9 30 a. M. And its coming down hard. At the jersey shore. Its not coming down at all in reading and allen town and in the poconos, by 4 00 its starting to end from west to east. And by dinnertime, its pretty much gone. The amounts of snow that im predicting, six inches plus, Cape May County, down toward the delaware beaches more specifically. Lewis, georgetown, south bethany, six inches plus. Cape may, six inches plus. Cape may courthouse, atlantic city, six inches plus. A little further to the inland, three to five inches in vineland, getting more like two to four inches. Theres a difference. The closer you are to the coast the more youll be getting. And then as we head toward philly it drops down even more. The area in white, one to three inches in gloucester and down near one inch at ben salem and philadelphia, abington, norris town just getting a little bit. Chester on the edge of one to three. So its obviously going to be worse at the shore. Jersey shore delaware beaches on our impact scale, its pretty high for them. Remember, its snowing much of the day, six inches plus. The suspected gunman is in custody and his name is Esteban Santiago. He was born in new jersey but lived for a time in alaska. Police believe he boarded a flight and checked his unloaded gun in his bag. When he arrived he got the gun from his luggage, loaded it and began shooting in a baggage claim area. These passengers just arrived from ft. Lauderdale. Probably one of the last flights out from ft. Lauderdale before the shooting. Meanwhile, in another part of the airport, passengers are trying to find other ways to get to the city, because that ft. Lauderdales airport is shut down. Passengers we found arriving in philadelphia from ft. Lauderdale did not know about the shooting in the airport until they landed. Are you harm . All flights have stopped the airports been evacuated. The overall storm itself will track offshore. If it came up the coast wed be getting tremendous amounts of snow. Theres a lot of moisture with this. As it is, with the track were predicting, the first alert is generally toward the coastal areas, the jersey shore, delaware beaches and the areas just inland in new jersey and delaware. Much of the day tomorrow, is when were going to be following the snowfall and the heavy snow down toward the coast. Six inches plus with some dangerous travel at the peak of that. You can see this huge area, its actually expanding, coming into virginia. It is snowing in parts of Central Virginia now down here. Not quite up by the Washington Area yet. So sometimes these things just race northeastward, and potentially we could see it start, even before 5 00 a. M. , lets say at the delaware beaches if this trend continues. And then, of course, it extends inland. The heaviest snow at the show between 9 00 a. M. And 1 00 p. M. Thats still mostly in the morning. And right around the midday hours would be the best chance of any snow accumulation in the philadelphia area and other inland places. Now, were going to be seeing that snow move offshore later on during the afternoon and tomorrow night well be dry. There it is 5 00 a. M. , dry except for cape may and rohoebth beach. You can see how cold it is. We dont normally have to worry about any kind of changeover when you have temperatures like this. Its all snow. No matter where you are. The water damaged at least six homes along milbrook road. Crews with the Water Department are trying to figure out if an existing sinkhole may have been related to the break. We have new information now in the past few minutes, sources tell nbc news at this early stage, this does not look like terrorism. Instead it appears this involves a mentally disturbed person. The gunman was taken into custody, authorities identified him as Esteban Santiago. He was born in new jersey. Authorities announces he was on a canadian flight. Authorities say he checked his gun in a bag and he arrived and loaded the gun in a bathroom. Police havent said anything about a possible motive. Now, to the killer whale featured in the blackfish documentary at seaworld died. In a statement they say he died this morning. Seaworld came under scrutiny after he pulled a trainer into his tank and killed her in 2010. Last march the Company Announces it would no longer breed orcas. It means the whales in seaworld are the last orcas under human care. A harrowing rescue plays out on a ski lift at colorado. Mickey wilson slid there, 30 feet across the narrow lift cable to save his friend. The friend was unconscious and hanging off the chair. After his back pack got caught in the lift and wrapped around his neck. Wilson makes his living as a slack liner, which is similar to tight rope walking so he put his skill to the test and split across the cable to save his friend and his friend is fine this afternoon. This follows another rescue from a chair lift at a ski resort in utah. In this case it was a boy dangling after his back pack got caught up. Lift operators were able to use ladder in this case to climb up and hoist the boy back up into the chair. Got to be so careful with the stuff youre wearing when youre on those lifts. Ive never heard of an incident like that. And to see two. But you do a lot of skiing. I dont wear a back pack. No. Some snow coming down tomorrow, and cold weather is moving in too . The snow is getting closer. Its already on radar in virginia. Its actually snowing in the southern portion of the state. And you can see this area is pretty impressive. Some of it on the heavy side. That darker blue just north of raleigh, north carolina. This is all moving right up to the northeast. Its going to be a very sharp cutoff between heavy snow and no snow. Theres an unusual kind of storm here. 5 00 a. M. To 9 00 a. M. Begins at the shore and extends inland. Heaviest snow at the shore between 9 00 a. M. And 1 00 p. M. In the inland areas, including philadelphia, 11 al to 1 00 p. M. Not that well get heavy snow. We got about one inch officially in philadelphia and up to three inches in parts of Chester County yesterday. And 3 00 p. M. To 6 00 p. M. The snow will be moving off shore. The temperature is going to stay way below freezing. This is not one of those cases where we have to worry about rain versus snow or ice or anything like that. The darker blues indicating heavier snow so there we are, already starting to have it pick up. 7 00, 8 00, 9 00 at the shore. With the low temperatures its a fluffy type of snow. It does not reach the far northern and western parts of our area, the poconos likely to get nothing out of this. Reading and allentown probably nothing. There we are later in the afternoon and it moves out. And then the coldest of the air comes in. The snow totals range from about an inch in philadelphia up to six inches or more in Cape May County and in parts of Sussex County in delaware. For the storm impact scale, the jersey shore and delaware beaches its high because of the six plus inches and hour after hour of the steady snow. Old phone scams are making new waves through the the delaware valley. They start with callers claiming to be Law Enforcement. Harry hairston spoke with a local sheriff about how to protect yourself. A fake phone call may sound Something Like this. Hi, agent so and so or officer so and so or, you know, you mary hopper have missed your court appearance. Reporter the caller tells victims they missed jury duty and need to pay a fine. The courts will never ask you to pay money over the phone. Reporter others try to take advantage of you, maysy you owe the court morning and that theres a warrant for your arrest. Harper says you should never believe a call like that. Just that you owe them money, pay now or youre in trouble. That will never happen from anybody here in the courthouse. Reporter sheriff harper says if you do owe money, the court will send you a letter, directing you to make payment at the courthouse. Heres how you can protect yourself against the bogus calls. Law enforcement says never give out information about yourself. Ask for the callers name and number. Hang up and then call your local Police Department or the sheriffs office. You can also report the calls through the federal do not call list. So thats a good way to protect yourself and look out for those crazy calls. Anytime you dont know who is on the other end of the line you want to be wary. One big thing they said, listen, if theres a warrant out for your arrest, nobodys going to tell you in advance, theyre going to knock on your door and take you away. Good point.
