Neighbors here called police this morning complaining about somebody smoking marijuana, possibly dealing drugs inside this apartment complex here behind me. When officer chris dorman showed up to investigate police say a man armed with a gun opened fire. And tonight were learning that suspect is no stranger to police. Are you sorry for what you did . Reporter prosecutors call donte island a career criminal. And now hes heading back to jail. Police say he shot and nearly killed a rookie cop who responded to complaints about drugs. Five to six gunshots right outside my house. Reporter that gunfire shaking this neighborhood. Police say rookie officer chris dorman confronted the suspect outside his apartment. Im shot im shot im shot reporter but was then hit by a barrage of bullets fired from a. 40caliber handgun. Striking him seven times. Once in the face, four times in the chest, once in the groin, and once in the leg. In the rear of the folcroft manor apartments. Reporter heavily armed tactical teams arrested donte island. Court records show he served years in prison on federal gun charges and officers warned his probation should be revoked. It was celt to expire tomorrow. Hes now in custody once again, this time facing felony attempted murder. Hell never, ever see the light of day again. Reporter neighbors in folcroft had long warned police about drug dealing. Its a wakeup call for these small towns. Reporter the police chief says his officers confronted almost daily, usually routine. But this time it was nearly deadly. I dont have an answer. Between the pills out there and the heroin out there. Its everywhere you look. Reporter and donte island now facing two charges of attempted murder of a police officer. Folcroft fire chief tom webers known him for ten years. Hes awake and talking. So thats great. Thats the first step to hopefully a speedy recovery and he can get back to doing what he loves to do. Reporter what the 25yearold loves is being a police officer. Not to mention fighting fires as a volunteer, which hes done since he was 16. Now hes fighting to recover after being shot seven times, once in the face. Right now theyre working on the facial damage that he has. It was apparently through the cheeks. Reporter Officials Say his bulletproof vest likely saved his life. The barrage of gunfire terrified loved ones like close friend billy brown. Hes really stepped up since becoming a cop here in folcroft. Hes everywhere. The kids love him. Thats his passion. Thats what he wants to do. And what he loves to do. A mother has been charged after police say her 4yearold daughter shot and killed herself. 25yearold shakia holmes is now charged with thirddegree murder. Theres also an arrest warrant out for her boyfriend. Police say the girl died after she shot herself in the face yesterday afternoon. It happened in a bedroom at the home on north 20th street. Police say the girls 3yearold sister and mother were home at the time. One, two, three we love you and tonight friends and family gathered for this vigil outside the familys home to remember the girl. The dolan family has a nesting ground for diamond back terrapins right in the front yard of their barnagut light home. They dumped sand on their lawn to give turtles emerging from salt marshes a safe habitat to bury their eggs. Experts say the sand is far more conducive to terrapin nests than the stone landscaping outside most nearby homes. I think its just important to help out in some way with the turtles. The nests are covered with these wire cages, which are also designed to keep predators like foxes and raccoons away from the eggs.
