Announcer from nbc news World Headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news with lester holt. Good evening. There could finally be some justice for thousands of families who were unknowingly poisoned by the water they drank in one of the most shameful government failures this country has seen in some time. The Michigan Attorney general filing criminal charges today against state and local government officials for alleged felony offenses that amounted to a coverup of the water crisis in flint. Thousands of flint children may now face a lifetime of impairment from drinking leadcontaminated water. And the ag said the three employees charged today failed to stop it from happening. Nbcs Stephanie Gosk has been covering the story and has todays new developments. Reporter the children of flint, all of them potentially exposed to Dangerous Levels of lead, werent mentioned in the charges. But michigans attorney general made it clear today that what happened to them was a crime. So many things went so terribly wrong, and tragically wrong in flint. Reporter now three government officials, two from michigans water agency and one a City Employee who ran flints water treatment, face possible jail time and tens of thousands in fines. They failed in their responsibilities to protect the health and safety of families of flint. They failed michigan families. Indeed, they failed us all. Reporter state employees mike fris brie and steven bush pled not guilty today. Among the allegations they face, tampering with evidence, doctoring lead test results. The flint administer is also accused of altering reports that were sent to both state and federal officials. In february last year, busch wrote an email saying the city of flint has an optimized Corrosion Control program, a treatment process that would have prevented the lead from leaching into the water for just 100 a day. But it was never actually used. Today the governor who is facing calls for his resignation over his own response to the crisis spoke out today about the charges. This tragic situation was the result of bad decisions by bureaucrats. Reporter a program to remove the roughly 15,000 lead pipes in the city is all but stalled. Only 33 have been replaced. The wades have an old lead pipe leading into their house. Last year they were told their daughter sophias blood had three times the level of lead considered safe. You almost secondguess yourself, you know, because you dont know if its caused or if its natural. Reporter the attorney general says the investigation into who is to blame is not over. We guarantee there will be new charges. Yeah, there will be. Reporter criminal charges dont undo the damage. And no one can guarantee when the water will be safe again. The attorney general was repeatedly asked if the governor could face criminal charges. He deflected the questions saying no one is being taken off the table. Stephanie, from that manmade disaster we go to ecuador now, increasingly desperate search among other devastation, new aftershocks there making for a very dangerous rescue operation. Among the tragedy, there is some triumph. Pablo was buried alive in a hotel, missing after two days. His wife ordered his casket. Then his rescue. Helping others keep hope alive.
