This morning, pennsylvania governor tom corbett is the first pennsylvania governor to not win a second straight term since 1968. Its because, of course, democrat tom wolf defeated corbett by a doubledigit margin, just as the polls predicted. And there goes the governorelect, driving that jeep of his into a Victory Party last night in york. That vehicle, of course, was featured prominently during wolfs campaign ads during the election season. Wolf used his victory speech to lay out his vision for pennsylvania. Our ancestors realized that education was the key to a strong citizenship, to a strong democracy, to a strong economy, to strong families, and we needed to invest in that. We need to make sure that we resurrect that idea here in pennsylvania and make sure that education is at the top of the list, not the bottom. Meantime, governor corbett delivered his concession speech, saying that he phoned wolf to offer his congratulations, and then he summed up his term in office. I said i was going to do what is right for pennsylvania, the tough decisions, and people may not like it. Well, obviously, they didnt like it. I said i may be a oneterm governor, and i am, but i am proud of what we did. Now, public education, pension reform and taxes were just some of the big issues that impacted the race for governor in pennsylvania. Governor elect will have his hands full in january, no doubt. We sent nbc 10s jesse gary to find out and he joins us from university city. We did research, chris, and found out that new direction includes education, investment and job creation. As the governorelect takes office, hes going to need to work with the Republicancontrolled Legislature to continue funding schools in philadelphia and across the state, and get tax hikes passed on certain businesses. We talked to former governor ed rendell, who says his fellow democrat can make fast progress by using existing state spending on infrastructure as a catalyst to pave the way forward. Ill take the bill for transportation infrastructure and uptempo the spending of that money to get the economy moving again, rebuilding our bridges, reconstructing our roads. That will create a lot of wellpaying jobs for pennsylvania, and again, a lot of orders for concrete and steel and aggregate, things that are all very important to get the pennsylvania economy moving again. Reporter in the middle of that agenda is another election, this time for the presidency. Im looking into how the National Election and race will Impact Politics on the state level. Thats coming up next hour. Live in university city, jesse gary, nbc news. A shift in harrisburg also this morning a shift in power in washington. They needed 51 seats to gain control of the senate. This morning two seats are still undecided. But youre looking at the new Senate Majority leader, republican Mitch Mcconnell turned back a democratic challenge in kentucky to win reelection there. The gop is also expected to pad its majority in the house to near historic levels. And president obama said he wants to sit down with congressional leaders after the election. The white house said you have stations have gone out for a meeting on friday. The president said he wants both parties to plan a way forward. Now, some political observers are saying that the splits in the Republican Party between the Tea Party Activists and the reagan conservatives may, in fact, you know, create their own problems and may create gridlock for the gop.
