New from overnight, crews had to respond to this row home fire in west philadelphia. It broke out around 12 30 this morning in the basement after i home on katherine street. Firefighters put it out and everyone inside got out safely. 4 32. Todays chance of snow comes on the oneyear anniversary of this terrible ice storm. Remember that . It left hundreds of thousands of people across the area without power. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live in berwyn. What are Utility Companies saying about Lessons Learned from that last year . Reporter one of the things they learned, tracy, is that last years ice storm was the second worst storm in terms of the number of outages in the history of peco. Nearly three quarters of a million customers lost service. In some cases outages lasted for days forcing residents to abandon their cold homes and go elsewhere. Officials say entire portions of some Service Areas and territories needed to have utility poles rebuilt. Now, one of the things the utility learned and changed is where and how often it trims trees. Crews identified areas that are more vulnerable to outages due to downed limbs which can knock out service. In some case, they cut the routine time trimming in half. That may help customers moving forward including the women youll meet in the next 30 minutes. The contracted firms will work with delawares New Wilmington Public Safety strategies commission. Police report 19 shootings in willmington already this year with 7 deaths. This morning we have an update on a plan to raise money for security cameras in reading. So far businesses and private citizens have donated about three quarters of the 80,000 the city needs. This morning a family in south philadelphia is trying to keep a loved one from being deported to mexico. Immigration officers detained jaime last month after his dui arrest last year. He has four children who are u. S. Citizens and his wife is battling some health problems. The family is now working with a nonprofit to free him from a Detention Center in northeastern pennsylvania. The Mexican Consulate in philadelphia is seeing a big increase in passport applications. This is in response to an Obama Administration policy that allows some undocumented immigrants to temporarily avoid deportation. The consulate is now hiring more workers and staying open until 7 00 to deal with the overflow. Officials say they are handling triple the volume they did last summer. Police in several burks county communities are warning parents about a string of attempted child abductions. Police say a man grabbed an 11yearold boy while he walked to school. Also a man driving an suv approached a girl outside a school in reading and someone approached another girl in bern township. Now on tuesday, we showed you this sketch of the suspect. Police say all the cases could be related, but there are few differences. So for now, theyre taking all cases seriously. The investigators are looking for some footage right now, and were hoping to find something on that footage. You know you keep your eyes out. Keep your eyes open for anything suspicious. Police in Cumberland County are investigating a second Home Invasion targeting an elderly person in just the past four days. Bridgeton police were called to a home on wayne road tuesday night. A 74yearold Woman Told Police two masked men came in through an unlocked door demanding money. She says they ransacked her bedroom and left without hurting her. Investigators say that robbery is similar to one saturday night just a couple of blocks away. In that case Police Say Two men armed with a knife broke into the home of a 94yearold man demanding money and attacking him. Hes in the hospital now. Police are increasing patrols in that area. Near new york city federal investigators are looking into that deadly commission between a commuter train and an suv. The crash killed six people tuesday night, and we have learned that eric vandercar, a penn graduate was one of the victims. Investigators are focusing on why the suv stopped on the tracks between the crossing gates. And the new york crash is renewing concerns about train traffic in and around the philadelphia area. Yeah some activists are saying that communities need to be informed in case something happens. Watchdog groups say theyre now counting about 15 to 20 oil tanker trains per week passing through this region. The worstcase scenario for a derailment or crash may involve serious explosions like ones that have happened in canada and north dakota. At a meeting last night, Safety Advocates expressed concerns and laid out what could be done to prevent a dangerous situation. The clouds are moving in, the wind will be picking up and temperatures falling. Right now not much wind here at nbc 10 but clouds are over the city and were waiting for light snow to develop. The temperatures not bad right now at 36 degrees. This is part of why im not expecting to see much in the way of accumulation. Areas north and west more likely to get a dusting than parts of the city. Look at Lehigh County. The snow has started just in the last five to ten minutes, it started to pick up a little bit. A light snow falling there. And in Lehigh County expect to see a dusting of snow. The temperatures are mainly above freezing. There are a couple colder spots. Wrights town at 30. But coatesville is 39. Usually one of the colder temperatures. Pendell is 38. And farther forth and west doylestown, 37. And its above freezing in quakertown. But snow already starting to move towards that area. You can see light snow just off to the north and west. You see parts of the burks, lehigh and into the pocono mountains getting that light snow right now. The snow is not going to be the big problem during the day. This snow will go through, and it will fizzle. And by later this morning, its the wind kicking in thats going to really bring temperatures down. And we will see wind though going to clear things out. But even with sunshine temperatures will be falling this afternoon. Much colder air is on the way. So light snow this morning to start with. Gusty winds this afternoon. And the temperatures go from the 30s above freezing to the 20s by later this afternoon with winds gusting to 35 miles an hour. And they keep sliding. By tomorrow morning, 12 degrees in the city. The suburbs even lower than 30 in the afternoon. We will see sunshine on friday. But clouds are ahead for saturday. And that will allow temperatures to come up. In spite of the cloud, 42 saturday afternoon. Then starting on sunday weve got a system that will be moving in for sunday monday and into tuesday with snow mixed with rain and the chance of snow will finally end later on tuesday. We have new information this morning, Delaware County leaders will spend some big money on a study aimed at drawing new industries. This comes after county Council Members visited the sunoco plant on tuesday. Sunoco is converting this oil refinery into a Processing Center for natural gas liquids. The county will conduct a 100,000 study to narrow down the types of industries that could thrive near that facility. Lawmakers in new jersey say they are close to reaching a deal on the states Transportation Trust fund. That fund pays for road bridge and rail improvements. But its set to go broke in july. Right now details of this potential agreement are unclear. Leaders have discussed possibly raising new jerseys gas tax. Well see what happens. Chester county is getting a 1. 5 million federal grant for a program to end homelessness. That money will help the countys decadestodoorways program which finds shelter for the homeless. The program also provides rental assistance so that they can find a more permanent place to live. A big makeover is in the works at a new jersey university. What youre really going to notice is temperatures later this afternoon. Well get an update with bill in just a minute. We have new video into nbc 10. The faa is investigating a crash of a small plane. It crashed into a transmission tower of a tv station in texas. Lubbock, texas, killing one person on board that plane. The crash caused a tower to collapse, as you see there, and also cut power to the station. No one inside the tv station was hurt. Brazil will spend close to 130 million to beef up security for the 2016 Olympic Games in rio de janeiro. Brazilian Authorities Say theyre also working with security agencies in the u. S. France and germany to tighten security for the summer games. It follows concerns over rising gun violence in rio in recent weeks. Two senators in california want to change the states vaccination laws by eliminating the personal beliefs exemption for parents who dont want their children to be vaccinated. There are now 99 measles cases in this latest outbreak in california. Many of those cases linked to disneyland. The proposed bill would focus on vaccinations required to attend school. Right now California Law allows exemptions for medical reasons and personal beliefs. For the first time lung cancer is deadlier than Breast Cancer for women in developed nations. The American Cancer Society says the reason is smoking. Researchers said tobacco use peaked years later for women than it did for men. Lung cancer has been the top Cancer Killer for men for decades. Speaking of Breast Cancer though, the fda has approved a new drug to treat an advanced form of the disease. The drug works by targeting proteins in the body involved in the growth of cancer cells. The most common side effects were low blood cell counts and fatigue. A new study on High School Seniors shows less partying and more emotional stress. Researchers say the teens that were studied are not socializing as much as their parents did. And once they do get to college, they dont feel too good about themselves. The study shows that High School Seniors spent half as many hours hanging out with friends compared to students in the late 80s. Major changes are on the way for Rutgers Universitys main campus in New Brunswick. Under a new master plan presented this week the school is considering building a boardwalk along the river. Temperatures will drop and some bitter cold air will move in. Good morning and welcome to nbc 10 news today. Im chris cato. And im tracy davidson. Lets find out about the snow and bitter cold temperatures with bill henley. Bill . I think the snow is going to have less of an impact on our area than the cold that will be here later today. Just some light snow. And the temperatures for most of the area are above freezing. So just looking for some minimal accumulation. And its not in the city yet. But the wind its already started to pick up. North and west thats where were seeing the snow this were monthing. And thats where it will be before 7 00 this morning. Its moving into lancaster, burks, lehigh counties right now. Thats just some very light snowfall thats moving into a ammaeus right now. Pottstown is 35. But its just dropped to freezing in allentown while reading is 33. So the temperatures north and west are starting to fall. And well see that temperature fall in philadelphia, too. Light snow at 7 00. Tapering off by 9 00. And temperatures will be falling as the afternoon progresses well be at 30 degrees at lunchtime, even though well see some breaks of sunshine.
