Com. Ebola concerns were once again a hot topic with several new developments in our area today. Lawmakers from the philadelphia area met with local hospitals and Public Health officials to discuss how theyre preparing. In new jersey, governor Chris Christie announced the creation of an ebola joint Response Team which will coordinate the states response and the cdc has Just Announced new monitoring guidelines that will affect our area. Starting monday, any traveler returning from liberia, sierra leone or guinea must be monitored for 21 days. The expanded screening will begin monday in six states, including pennsylvania and new jersey. Nbc 10s lu ann cahnc joins us now live to explain how this would work. Lu ann. In pennsylvania, the Health Department says they will have a plan in place within days. Officials say this state was included because its close to International Airports where passengers are already being checked for ebola. And there are pockets of large west african communities here as well. Passengers returning from west africa will be given information cards and the thermometer to measure their body temperatures. The state says its still working on how travelers would report that information. They say it could be in person, by phone or video chat. And earlier today, three area congressmen met with Health Officials in philadelphia. They came out of the meeting at the hospital, the university of pennsylvania saying they felt confident that area hospitals are prepared. Theyre getting sufficient communication but there are still questions. I think there needs to be greater clarity and guidance of what we expect of all the institutions. I have great confidence in all these institutions. Theyre all capable but we cant expect every institution in this country to provide the level of care being provided at nih. Hes referring to the National Institutes of health. There are no reported or suspected cases of ebola in our area right now. Lu ann cahn, nbc 10 news. Today, corner Chris Christie said new jersey is taking the threat of ebola very seriously. But urged people to stay calm. He announced the formation of that ebola joint Response Team. One of their tasks will be monitoring passengers who arrive at newark airport. People who are considered high risk could be placed in quarantine. People showing symptoms would be sent to one of three hospitals, hackensack, Robert Wood Johnson or university hospital. More Protection Equipment has also been purchased for health care workers. We also want to keep you updated on breaking news out of canada. Officials have now identified the gunman who opened fire inside parliament. And at a war memorial in ottawa. Police say hes 32yearold michael zehafbibeau. Officers say he killed a canadian soldier standing guard at the war memorial. Witnesses say he then ran off and entered the Parliament Building where dozens of shots were fired. Take a look at this video taken during that attack. The gunman was later killed by the sergeantatarms at parliament. It appears he may have been the only shooter. Police say this is still an unfolding situation and have released no motive for the attack. Nbc nightly news will have any new details on the investigation or the shooter. Thats coming up on nbc 10 at 6 30. New information on the legal battle brewing between the Philadelphia Teachers Union and the School District. Attorneys for the two sides met again in harrisburg. Nbc 10 waiting on a decision from a judge over whether to keep the case in Commonwealth Court or move it locally to philadelphia common pleas court. An injunction was issued earlier this week that stopped the School District from forcing teachers to contribute toward their health care benefits. District officials are appealing that decision. Thisc was the scene last week, it shut down broad street. Teachers rallied outside district headquarters protesting the School Reform commissions decision to cancel their contracts. The move would require teachers to pay as much as 140 a month into their benefits. Big changes coming to the Montgomery County d. A. s office. It comes off prosecutors were forced to drop rape charges against a prominent political official. Robert kerns is the former head of the county gop. The d. A. Dropped the rape charge because a lab report was misread. It referred the case to the Attorney Generals Office which is now prosecuting kerns on assault charges. Today the d. A. Announced shes following the recommendations from an independent review. The office will be restructured, county detectives will have a new unit for Violent Crime and there will be two new positions designed to review cases and evidence. There will probably be about a Million People happy about that. A lot of people not especially happy with the weather today. Wet and windy. We have more of it to come, chilly weather as well. Today, tonight, tomorrow. But a dry weekend expected and beyond. Well, we have nasty weather around now. We had a bit of a break in philadelphia and now the rain is coming back, the low visibility coming back, 55 degrees, the wind north at 14 miles an hour. 11 degrees cooler than we were at this time yesterday. And were down to 52 in westchester. Thats one of the cold spots, 48 in mt. Pocono and we dont have any place above the mid50s, which is more typical of lets say thanksgiving than what were seeing right now. Plus, we have wind on top of that. Generally a north wind now. 15, 20 miles an hour. Weve seen gusts over 30 during the day today. And heres some of that next area of rain coming into the philadelphia area. Its light now but theres heavier stuff across northern new jersey. As you can see, obviously its moving down this way. We have all sorts of swirls in the ocean. Good thing that heavy rain is not coming in our direction. But its just going to be hour after hour as we go through the night, just coming down from the northeast. Now, the central and southern delaware which was dry for a good bit of the day, not dry anymore. And this is the area thats been hit the hardest in the last two days, monmouth and ocean counties with more coming in off of the ocean during the night tonight. Thats one area well especially look for any potential flooding. Look at the swirl here out in the ocean as the low pressure center, the noreaster develops. Its not all that well organized yet but it will be. It tens to push the rain in from the ocean. There we are, 10 00 tonight. More rain in new jersey than in the pennsylvania area but if any of that heavy stuff comes in to ocean county, its going to be a rough night. And then by tomorrow morning, we expect the wet weather to continue. Theres that noreaster, not moving very much, just spinning around. It spins that moisture back in. So our rain is basically coming from boston. Doesnt happen like that very often. Here it comes even during the day tomorrow, we expect more and its going to take so long for that thing to move out. The wind is still going to be with us and at least some of friday looks like well be seeing some clouds as well. For tonight, we expect it to be wet and windy and chilly. 48 degrees for the low in philadelphia, 44 in the suburbs. Tomorrow, windy and chilly, more showers around. Look how cool and look how windy. Gusts up to 35 miles an hour, especially toward the shore. And then friday we dry out, its windy but temperatures are up a bit. Real nice day on saturday.
