Whats left of the oil truck. The driver just had some leg and back pain. A firefighter had a minor injury. Its amazing no one was killed and fortunate there wasnt more damage to the surrounding area. Sky force 10 had the best view of the crash site and of the enormous fire and black cloud it sent over the neighborhood, literally, 60 yards to the east. The trees got burnt in the back. Reporter rocky lives about as close to the site as can you get. He heard the booms and ran out to find the gas trucks fires falling from the sky. The truck was carrying about 9,000 gallons of gas when it rolled over on the northbound ramp from route 90 to route 130. As bad as it looked the driver of the fuel truck only had leg and back pain. He and a firefighter went to Cooper University hospital with minor injuries. The surrounding area was evacuated for a short time. You can still smell the burning gas in the air. Some say at the height of the fire, you could feel it in your throat. After some of the gas burned off, a hazmat group based near the site was able to contain the fire minimizing potential damage to the air and water. Now investigators want to know what led to the crash. Ice, speed, maybe both. Rocky has his theory. Too many people come by fast. While there was some nasty stuff in the air and water today, potentially some of which could have gotten into the delaware river, local and county Officials Say the local hazmat team, for the county happens to be based in pennsauken township they say they did a great job of minimizing what could have been a worse situation than it was. Things are moving here. But the route 90 onramp to route 30 still closed. 90 east is still closed to route 73. A live look at the betsy ross bridge. The bridge is opened in both directions but eastbound exit for route 130 remains closed because of the crash. Sky force 10 is high above that scene right now. The major effect thats having on traffic is the cars coming from pennsylvania over the belttsy ross bridge are getting diverted to route 190 north. Thats right. Some areas could see record lows as we go through tonight. Youre right, the temperatures are dropping. Those wintdzds theyll be lighting up. Right now were at 17 degrees in allentown. We could hit a record tonight, expected to go below zero through parts of the Lehigh Valley. 24 degrees in philadelphia. 24 in wilmington. 25 in millvale. So in philadelphia, at least, the temperatures dropped about 2 degrees in the last hour. Those numbers will keep on dropping. Take a look at the arctic air up to our north. We have actual temperatures below zero in buffalo. 1 degree below zero. This will continue to move in. This is very cold air. Again, by tomorrow morning, we could be seeing some record low temperatures across the area. Now, as for the rest of this evening, like i mentioned, the wintsdz winds will be lighting up so it will allow the wind to drop off. By 8 00 tonight we should be in the upper teens around philadelphia. By 10 p. M. , already in the middle teens. And expected to be in Single Digits by tomorrow morning. A judge ordered christie and the state legislature to tut putt more money into Pension Funds for retired public workers. This is a major blow for christie, one day before the governor releases his budget. It this could force big changes as well. The State Government is expected to appeal. New at 5 00 from the classroom to the state house. Late this afternoon, lawmakers voted on changing of a controversial test used to decide what classes students across the state can take. Reporter i ask tell you lawmakers have voted in favor of a measure that would bar School Officials from using tests to determine student placement for three years. This new bill just passed 637. It is great news for parents and teachers concerned about the negative impact of standardized tests. Now, the bill also bars the department of education from using the test as a way to determine a students placement in advanced or gifted programs for three years starting with the next school year. It also bars state officials from using it as a graduation promotion requirement. You may recall that we actually broke this story last week. These tests have drawn a lot of mixed reactions. School Officials Say students will benefit from the challenge of the exams, but critics say teachers spend way too much time with test prep which also take as way from a childs regular curriculum. As we come back out live, i can tell you that i just got off the phone with the teachers union, who has been pushing for this bill. They tell us this fight is not over. Theyll be pushing for two more. This is just one of three wins theyre looking to maintain here. Meantime, the testing for these children again, begins next month starting march 1st. That is the very latest from trenton, new jersey neff are teetty nbc10 news. Exactly one week after this West Philadelphia building was devoured by flames it is quickly becoming a pile of rubble. The Building Made National Headlines after water used to fight the fire encased the building in thick ice. Neighbors and city officials worried the building could collapse without any warning. Harry hairston is live on the scene with the latest on its condition. Reporter for a week they called this the ice palace. Take a look at it. Now its quickly becoming a pile of rubble as you say, just days after the city put it on its imminently dangerous list, work began. The ice palace one of the citys more than 300 imminently dangerous properties is nearly reduced to rubble. The Mayors Office tells the nbc10 investigators the department of licenses and inspections took special action to give the go ahead to demolish without going through the full permitting process. Think they got it down quick enough . Yeah, yeah because all the other buildings that catch fire they dont get them down as fast as this one. Yeah theyre doing a good job out here. The citys doing a good job. Reporter the demolition tells me they gave the city a safety plan friday and got the go ahead this morning. The company says it will have the permit by the end of the day. The department of l i says in cases of imminently dangerous property it can authorize immediate demolition while applications for permits are still in progress. The property got its name the ice palace about a week ago when it caught fire. Water from fire hoses froze on contact. For days many marvelled at the artistic look. Now neighbors hope for Something Better to replace an old building that also served as a medical center. What would you like to see replace this center . Reporting in West Philadelphia, Harry Hairston nbc10 news. To the Lehigh Valley where police shot and killed a suspect after a violent encounter. Police say that suspect stabbed an officer. We sent a reporter to that scene, nbc10s doug shimell. Hes been in hanover township. Doug joins us live right now. What are police saying about how this whole thing started . Reporter investigators are telling me it may have been a tumultuous breakdown between the suspect, Jerome Nichols, and his girlfriend jacqueline, that led to the Home Invasion stabbing this morning and the horrible events that followed. By the time Jerome Nichols crashed his black suv in allentown, police say he had already stabbed his exgirlfriend and led police on a wild car chase and then allegedly went after the officers. Taser without effect. At that time, the suspect turned and engaged the pd while holding a large enough naive. Reporter detectives say the officer and a Pennsylvania State trooper were left with few options. He stabbed him multiple times. At that point, officers from both Pennsylvania State police and pd discharged their Service Weapons in an attempt to stop the action. I heard a loud bang and, help me help me. Reporter barely 30 minutes earlier, Jennifer Brown says she heard nichols allegingly attacking jacqueline who lived next door. I went over to the wall and kind of listened. And she was like help me call the police. So, i banged on the wall, i said, im calling the police. Reporter investigators also believe Jerome Nichols may have covered his exgirlfriends car with black paint and slashed all four tires before leaving. Prosecutors say the police car dash cam video of the chase speaks volumes. The officer was under attack with a large knife. He was stabbed multiple times. You know certainly under those circumstances, the force that was utilized is in my opinion, justifiable. Reporter well both the officer and jacqueline are expected to make a full recovery after minor surgery. Police tell nbc10 a man was shot on north street in allegheny. He was taken to temple hospital with gunshot wound to the stomach. The victim is in critical condition. At this time there are no arrests. In Camden County a tanker truck flipped over and exploded this morning. Police still have the exit ramp shut down leading from route 90 onto route 130 in pennsauken. Neighbors are being allowed back into their homes after dozening of evacuations. The truck driver went to want hospital with just minor injuries. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused that truck to flip over. In ohio a coast guard cutter worked to break the ice on lake erie, where experts say the bitter cold has left 98 of the surface frozen solid. While in maine, it was ice from above causing problems. A frozen sheet falling from a portland rooftop battering a car below. Its pretty nuts how far out that piece of ice came and landed on that car. It was a good five feet from the building. And then by thursday morning, we will be watching an area of snow to our south. So far, it looks to kind of graze the area. Well keep an eye on it as he can go through the week. As far as our temperatures plunging they will quickly be dropping off as we go through tonight. Only in the last hour theyve dropped off already 2 degrees. That will continue to go down into the Single Digits as we go through tonight. So, right now were at 24 degrees in philadelphia. 17 in allentown. Pottstown and mt. Pocono at 6 degrees. Mt. Pocono is expected to be well below zero. 23, mt. Holly. South jersey and delaware temperatures are in about the mid to upper 20s. Reporter they really were. I got an update. Within the last two minutes from a captain from the Pennsauken Police department. He told me everyone from these houses in this neighborhood that was evacuated earlier today, they are now back in their homes. So there were about 40 houses evacuated at the height of this crisis when the flames were raging and the smoke was pouring into this neighborhood in pennsauken. People were asked to leave their houses. But this afternoon after the fire was put out, thoerlts went home by home to check the air quality inside the houses. And once the air in the houses was deemed safe residents were allowed back inside. Earlier they told us what unfolded here this morning was absolutely terrifying. Like nothing ive ever seen before. Just all of a sudden, where there was a house now just like a towering inferno. I knocked on my neighbors door and i said get out, get out. Somethings flowing up. The whole house shook. I ran to the window and saw the fireball. The smoke was horrible. It was just billowing. You get out up. Dont wait. You just leave. Reporter they wont forget this. New information on a deadly workplace shooting in Burlington County. It happened at Shields Business Solutions along twoshome drive. Cydney long, we now know more about the two men at center of this. What happened . Reporter i want to tell you, police just released this business, this work place as a crime scene, about a half an hour or so ago. They tell us out of respect for surviving victims in this they will only say this was a domestic dispute. So something that started at home between these two men that led to this violent and tragic ending here at work. 9 twoshome drive, gunshot victim at station 138. Reporter station dispatchers call for a helicopter to land near Shields Business Solutions. Police say Melvin Nieves was shot four times by his colleague, edgar figueroa. Both men live in philadelphia and drive armored trucks. Figueroa, police say, turned the gun on himself, taking his own life with a single gunshot wound to the head. Nieves was not armed. He had already locked up his own personal weapon, which by permit he carries only for work. Some employees saw something. Our detectives in the county detectives are trying to determine exactly who saw what at this time. Reporter shields relies on armored car guards because they repair atm machines and reload them with cash. The company did not return our calls. One Police Officer told nbc10 afs a gruesome scene. Colleagues ran to the victims rescue. No one else was hurt. The gentleman that was getting shot obviously, tried to flee. And this gentleman chased him through the building. I guess it worked its way outside, out back. Reporter and some of the employees, were told who witnessed this unfolding, the shooting, they were escorted to their own personal vehicles allowed to leave early. A contractor who left a short time ago, told us the company hired a grief counselor for anyone. We also just checked with Cooper Medical Center and nieves is still listed in critical condition. Temperatures overnight tonight could be dropping below zero degrees, so, yes, we are talking about more cold more records being broken potentially, especially areas north and west. Heres what it feels like right now outside. Our actual temperatures are in the mid20s. 24 degrees, philadelphia northeast philly. Through the Lehigh Valley we have teens already. The wind is lightening up now. As we go overnight, that will allow temperatures to drop even more. Arctic air is moving in. You see this pink shading. This is going to be bringing in some below zero temperatures, actual temperatures. Not the feels like temperature with the wind. We already have some below zero numbers. Here in buffalo, minus 1 degree. These numbers will be moving into parts of the area as we go through tonight. For the rest of your evening, the winds will lighten up. It was breezy made it feel colder. Overnight, once winds die down. That allows temperatures to drop even faster. We should be around 19 degrees and skies will be clearing allowing us to get colder. Authorities say winslow injected a british woman with sill scone for an illegal butt enhancement at a hotel near the airport in february of 2011. That woman later died. Reading, pottstown, mid20s. Much of south jersey and philadelphia, low to mid20s. These numbers will be dropping off quickly, once we get darker outside. Were getting a little more daylight each day, but over the next hour or two, well be getting even colder. As far as the overnight low temperatures are concerned, we could see minus 4 in allentown. Minus 2 in reading. Minus 3 for the overnight low in quakertown. Trenton, we could see zero degrees. Zero, mt. Holly. 3 degrees northeast philly. For south jersey along the shore, we could be around zero degrees come tomorrow morning. Minus 3 in vineland. 4 degrees possibly in dover. We could see recordsetting temperatures here. 4 degrees, philadelphia. Minus 2, glassboro tomorrow morning. Zero degrees, westchester. 2 degrees in wilmington. A lot of these numbers hit right around sunrise, so that will be the coldest time of the morning. The reason why its so cold we have a big area of High Pressure off to our west. What thats doing is dragging down this really cold air from canada and kind of locking if. Thats going to be giving us those well below average daytime highs and those potentially recordsetting morning lows. So philadelphia, record low, 2 degrees tomorrow morning. We should be around 4, so we may not hit that record low. For reading, Atlantic City allentown, wilmington all could hit record low with a few areas closer to the Lehigh Valley being below zero degrees tomorrow morning. It will be a very cold start to your day. Overnight, the wind will diminish and that will allow temperatures to drop off so much. As we go through tonight it stays very cold. Even for tuesday afternoon. We still stay cold in the 20s. Wednesday we could get a little bit of a break. Still cold though and still dry. Then we go into thursday. I mentioned areas of snow to our south by late morning to midday areas thursday. Well watch an area of rain and snow. Could be grazing southern parts of delaware. We have to watch this closely. The smallest movement to the north could mean more of our area sees a little snow as we go through the day thursday. As of notice it looks like it should be staying to the south. Diagnosed with a peanut allergy at age 3 spencer can now safely tolerate the equivalent of ten peanuts thanks to an experimental peanut patch. In a clinical trial, half of those wearing the patch laced with peanut protein for a year were able to eat about four peanuts. Significant because even trace amounts of peanuts can cause severe allergic reactions. Its really nice to know i have a little bit of a cushion. So if i have a little bit of peanuts, its not the end of the world. Reporter another new study from the uk finds introducing peanut protein to babies may have a protective effect. Consumption rather than avoidance seems to protect against developing peanut allergy. Reporter at kings cleaning in london enrolled 40 clirn under age 1. Half were given a peanut snack at least three times a week. While others were not given a peanut until they turned 5 years old. 17 of the kids who avoided peanuts developed the allergy by age 5. Compared to just 3 of the children who ate the peanut snacks. The idea is to teach the immune system that peanuts are not the enemy. You need to be introduced to these proteins early on in life. Just black smoke. Ive never seen so much smoke. Right now, the impact on neighbors, traffic and how long it will last. The flames and the smoke have cleared in pennsauken Camden County. As you can see from this picture over the scene a short time ago, the trouble isnt over yet. Traffic is still blocked in that area. More than seven hours now after the crash. Happened around 11 closhg this morning on northbound route 90 ramp onto route 130. Right now the route 90 onto route 130 remains closed while 890 east ramp is closed to 73. Amazingly, the driver inside the burning tanker was able to get out and wasnt seriously hurt.
