Reporter so police at this point want to interview that 43yearold shooting victim who issuely drove himself to the hospital at the university of pennsylvania earlier this afternoon, just within the last couple of minutes, he arrived home on crutches. Now to the tragedy in new york. The ambush killing of two Police Officers. Today, the citys mayor called for new yorkers to put aside the protests until after the officers are laid to rest. Nbcs Chris Pallone reports. Reporter as the memorial to two murdered nypd officers grows in the bedfordstuyvesant neighborhood of brooklyn within the citys mayor is calling for a halt to political protest and finger pointing, the focus turning to two grieving families and their fellow officers. Lets accompany these families on their difficult journey. Lets see them through the funerals. Then debate can begin again. Reporter earlier, the mayor and Police Commissioner William Bratton visited the families of officers rafael ramos and wenjian liu. The two were gunned down saturday afternoon, assassinated in the words of police as they sat in their patrol car. Ismaaiyl brinsley, driven at least in part by hatred of the police ambushed the officers before killing himself. Police say brinsley had been arrested 19 times. His mother told him he was often violent and said he tried to commit suicide last year. But some believe recent nationwide protests over Police Tactics caused brinsley to act. Some new York Police Unions feel betrayed by de blasio who has criticized the eric garner grand jury decision and police tactic. Officers turn their backs on de blasio when he visited the hospital where the officers died saturday. But bratton dismisses the criticism. This is something that should be bringing us all together, not taking us apart. Reporter a spat over policy being fought by politicians as new yorkers and their police force mourn the citys loss. Chris pallone, nbc news. Ahead at 5 30, were working on new information about Ismaaiyl Brinsley, the man police say shot and killed the two new York City Police officers. The number of officer fatalities this year is more than 20 higher than last year. Its according to the chairman and ceo of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund inc washington, d. C. 49 officers were killed with guns across the country this year. Thats up from 31 officers last year. The number of officers killed in ambush attacks has now tripled the annual average. I think the message is loud and clear, we need to tone down the rhetoric, rally around Law Enforcement, these men and women who are out there protecting us and putting our lives at risk and we need to rally against lawlessness in this country. In california has the highest number of Police Officer deaths with 14 this year. Pennsylvania lost 4 and new jersey lost 3. In response to the Police Killings in new york city, Philadelphia Police are changing routines and pairing up. But across the river in camden, the chief says nothing changes. Chief Scott Thompson tells nbc 10 he wont overreact. He is telling officers to be vigilant. He said Community Police has transformed parts of the city and he doesnt want to mess that up. We cant allow it to change what our mission is. Every day we have to get out here on the streets and connect with the people. Chief thompson also tells nbc 10 that crimes have been cut in half since the city began community policing. Nbc 10 is following breaking news in north korea. Tollefson pleaded guilty earlier this year to defrauding people by failing to deliver on Sports Charity packages. He now insists hes innocent and plans to prove it in court. I believe i did not have any criminal intent and the new evidence is very, very important to the decision that i made one week ago today to withdraw my plea. A fire hydrant gives way, spewing hundreds of gallons of water into the air in one maryland community. Just look at the force behind that water. It happened this morning as firefighters were using the hydrant to extinguish a house fire around the corner. The owners were out of town. When they return they have quite the mess to clean up. New information tonight on the fate of u. S. Army Sergeant Bowe bergdahl. The case is now in the hands of the army. Bergdahl disappeared in afghanistan after walking away from his base in june 2009. He was held captive for five years by the taliban and was covered in may as part of a prisoner exchange. The army could do nothing or courtmartial bergdahl which may bring nothing more than a dishonorable discharge. The drones, the unmanned flying machines are a hot seller this christmas. Today, lawyers for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev compared Media Coverage of their clients case to that of Oklahoma City bomber timothy mcveigh. The bombing inflicted injury on the entire population of greater boston, similar to the mcvey case. Mcveys 1997 trial was moved to denver. A judge rejected tsarnaevs first request in september to move the trial. Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty. The trial begins january 5th. Aaron hernandez was in court for a final hearing before his murder trial begins next month. Hernandez is charged in the shooting both of odin lloyd. H hernandez pleaded not guilty to killing lloyd. Others say its in poor taste. I just dont think i would like my son to see Santa Holding a gun. The town of dover is considering having cadets walk the streets to help enforce quality of life issues. But not everyone who lives there thinks the idea of a citizenenhanced police force is a good idea. Tim furlong is live in dover. I understand they plan to arm the trained cadets with tasers. Reporter yes, not everybody is in love with that. Walk with me through downtown dover and you can see its a pretty town but what they dont have is enough cops to man every street in the shopping district. A lot of people say theyre okay with the Cadet Program here in dover but they are concerned about the minimum age, 18, and the idea that theyd carry a taser. c reporter it is a nice town but some dont play well with others. People are hanging around during the day, some drinking during the day. Police say there would be tough background checks for cadet applicants f. Theyre selected well put them into a Training Program that would teach them how to use verbal communication skills, basic defensive tactics and basic knowledge of the law. Reporter the cadets could be as young as 18. While police say they wont carry guns, they would carry tasers. That would be nice if somebody extra was walking around. Things like that. I want to give it a try. Reporter he likes the idea of the Cadet Program but he wonders if giving that much authority and a taser to an 18yearold is a good move, especially in this contentious postferguson time period. We have mature 18yearolds as well as we could have immature 18yearolds. It depend on the individual and the screening process. Reporter the delaware aclu director says this is a horrible plan. But Business Owners say they like the idea of a uniform presence here, even if they are younger people with limited training. They think the police will do a good job with the program. Were learning more about the gunman who ambushed and killed two new York City Police officers saturday. That gunman took his own life. As Chris Glorioso reports, family members say trouble was nothing new to him. He was an emotionally troubled young man. And he was suicidal. Reporter july brinsley says her brother was a suicidal man who suffered lifelong psychological problems and despite countless arrests, in numerous cities across the country, Ismaaiyl Brinsley never got the Mental Health services he needed. If you have emotional issues and youre constantly going in and out of jail, you know, prison, and clearly somethings wrong, he should have been offered help in the system. Right . But he wasnt. Reporter this cell phone video shows the frantic moments immediately after brinsley shot and killed officers ramos and liu. You can see a swarm of nypd and medical personnel guiding one of the victims on to a stretcher. Moments later, an ambulance speeds away. A friend said the killer did call his mother on the phone sometime saturday before this savage assassination. I believe he called her and he sounded distraught. There was a large fire on the porch. Two people were trapped on the roof. This is a man police say started that fire. An arrest warrant has been issued for 43yearold shaun king. He lives in the 5700 block of arch street. If you know his whereabouts, call police. A day after finding montgomerys keys in the schuylkill river, divers returned to the water. Divers are searching the schuylkill now just below boat house row today. A volunteer Recovery Team found montgomerys keys in the water sunday. Theres a 65,000 reward in the case. As we look into parts of chester county, closer to the shore, a little bit spotty light rain there. More moisture is to our south and this will be moving up as we go across the next couple of days. A Philadelphia Traffic Court judge acquitted in a federal Corruption Case is facing new charges. The judicial conduct board filed charges today accusing judge Michael Sullivan of ticket fixing. Sullivan has been suspended since he was indicted in 2013. Several of his excolleagues are heading to prison because of that probe that abolished the citys traffic court. Sullivan denies the charges and wants to return to work and receive nearly two years of back pay. A Pennsylvania State lawmaker isnt giving up on his attempt to impeach attorney general kathleen kane. In a memo to state lawmakers, republican Darryl Metcalf wrote, quote, as new revelations have come to light regarding the attorney generals misbehavior in office, more pennsylvanians are questioning her ability to perform the duties of her office and some are calling for her to resign from her position, end quote. Metcalf is asking law marriages to cosponsor a resolution, calling for kanes impeachment. Kane has refused to enforce pennsylvanias law banning samesex marriage. Former philadelphia sports caster Don Tollefson spoke publicly today since withdrawing his guilty plea in a fraud case. Tollefson says hes now representing himself. He also hinted at new evidence that will help him prove his innocence. The suspect in a decades old child murder case was in court today. Todays hearing focused on allowing certain materials to be admitted at trial. In 2012 Police Arrested hernandez after family members alerted investigators that they believed hernandez was responsible for etan paetz death. His body was never found. A new jersey Police Officer comes within inches of serious injury in that close call was caught on camera. A suspected drunk driver nearly ran down this officer during a traffic stop. He barely had a second to jump out of the way after the mazza slammed into his cruiser. New jersey enacted a law in september requiring all Municipal Police cars to be equipped with dashboard cameras. Talk about timing here. That camera that caught this was installed just three days earlier. I heard a loud explosion and i turned around to see the vehicle a victim is worth a thousand words. Same thing for the video. Things going around in the nation shed light on some of the dangers Police Officers face. Police arrested a 21yearold, alex opoku. Officers say he was driving drunk and had marijuana in the car. The arrests were part of a raid by members of the new dui warrant task force program. Members of Law Enforcement picked out the defendants who failed to appear for trial or sentencing in dui cases. Authorities say they have a list of a thousand people theyre trying to track down and will continue to conduct regular raids in an attempt to get drunk drivers off the roads. Dui crimes are the most likely to see crashes where innocent people who are simply minding their own business are killed. The District Attorney says many of these defendants are repeat dui offenders. New information now on the vandalism at a 9 11 memorial in mercer county. Police arrested a suspect. He was taken into custody in georgia. He police say he spray painted graffiti on the memorial in west Windsor Township last month. It caused 2,500 in damage. Hes from connecticut but will be brought to new jersey to face charges. Right now at 6 00, new york citys mayor is calling for an end to protests after two new York City Police officers were gunned down in their patrol car. I think its a time for everyone to put aside political debates, put aside protest, put aside all of the things that we will talk about in due time. Mayor bill de blasio asked his city to stop the fingerpointing and focus on families of the two officers. This is a live look at the growing makeshift memorial close to where the officers were killed in brooklyn. All day fellow officers and supporters have been leaving flowers and saying prayers at the site. The killings set off an alarm for Police Department across the country and here in philadelphia where the department is changing routines and pairing up officers. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says president obama was outraged over the killings of the new york officers.
