Its an earthquake. Hey it lasted only about ten seconds, but the damage done will last for months. Roads buckled, power knocked out and homes and businesses ruined. Tonight, there is a state of emergency for the region. Good evening, im denise nakano. The quake ignited more than 100 gas lines, sparking at least six fires. More than 120 people went to hospitals, most with minor injuries. The epicenter struck about six miles from the city of napa, just before 330 in the morning pacific time, shaking families awake. And Emergency Responders into action. Nbc 10 national correspondent, jinah kim, is in napa, california, tonight, with the very latest. Reporter it struck at 3 20 a. M. , and a good thing, too. Contents of Grocery Store shelves fell on floors instead of people. Panic was contained mostly inside homes and not out in the streets or freeways. Ive been through a lot of earthquakes in my lifetime in the california. And it was a serious rocker. Reporter about 200 people treated in hospitals, mostly cuts and bruises. Very early, a big wave of folks with lacerations and bumps and bruises. They were related to folks getting out of bed and walking on things that had broken at night. Reporter but three of them were critical, including a child who was struck by a falling chimney. Nearly 100 buildings were damaged. Four mobile homes burned to the ground, and firefighters couldnt do much about it because of a water main break, one of 60 in the area. Several Historic Buildings in downtown napa were red tagged. I just climbed through the rubble, started shouting for my wifes name, and she was all right. Reporter the 6. 0 quake was centered between the cities of napa and american canyon, but was felt as far south as santa cruz, which was the epicenter of the last quick to hit the area, 1989s loma prieta. Shortly after the quake, up to 70,000 homes were without power, but most have been restored. And so far, about 60 aftershocks. There are no reports of major damage to roads and bridges. The suspects father was stabbed in the back. Another man was stabbed in the stomach. No word tonight on their conditions or on what led to the stabbing. Also new tonight, Philadelphia Police are investigating the shooting of a man in olney. Were told the victim who is in his 40s is in critical condition. It happened before 9 30 on the 700 block of east olney avenue. No arrests have been made. New information in a story we told you about last night at 11 00. Authorities in trenton say they have arrested the man who posed as a Police Officer and then sexually assaulted a store clerk yesterday. Police say 54yearold Gustavo Garcia walked into a store on the 800 block of south broad street, forced a clerk into the bathroom and assaulted her. Garcia is charged with four counts of ago aggravated sexual assault, robbery, impersonating a Police Officer and other offenses. A wild scene at the wildwood water works when a car crashes into a building. The accident happened at 6 00 this morning in wrio grand. The driver lost control of his car while coming around the bend in the road. He hit the guardrail, eventually sending the car into the pumping station building. The station remained open. The driver was not hurt, but he was issued a summons for careless driving. Opening arguments are scheduled to begin tomorrow in the trial of a philadelphia woman charged with kidnapping a 5yearold girl from her school last year. 21yearold christina faces several charges including kidnapping and deviant sexual intercourse. She has been in jail since her arrest. Last week, prosecutors revealed they have evidence she was dressed in muslim garb and took the girl in january of 2013. They say her computer showed an internet search for muslim clothes and how to get rid of rape dna evidence. We have also learned the now 7yearold victim in this case will testify in court during the trial. An american held hostage for about two years by an Al Qaeda Linked group in syria is free tonight. The man has been identified as 45yearold Peter Theo Curtis of massachusetts. Hes now safe outside syria. Secretary of state john kerry issued a statement saying the u. S. Is using every diplomatic intelligence and military tool at its disposal to secure the release of other americans being held in syria. News of curtis release comes days after isis militants executed american journalist, james foley. And our pledge to keep the witness of james life as a personal call to faith, courage and love. Hundreds filled a church in New Hampshire today to remember james foley. The bishop of manchester said foley was living his faith by showing the world images of people affected by war. Foley was killed by Islamic State militants after being held in captivity for nearly two years. Isis militants captured a Government Air base in syria today. The air base was the final stronghold of Government Forces in raqqa province. According to a monitoring group, this comes after days of fighting that have left hundreds of people dead. Syrian state television confirmed that Government Forces have evacuated the facility. Amateur video posted online claims to show people in raqqa celebrating the military victory by honking their horns. But nbc news cannot independently verify the authenticity of this video. Todays festival featured live performances, motivational speakers and activities for the kids. A boy playing at the jersey shore makes quite the discovery. He unearthed a 10,000yearold arrowhead. The 10yearold and his family were vacationing on Long Beach Island last week when he found it at the edge of the surf. The family, who is from virginia, contacted the Archeological Society of new jersey to take a look at it. And thats when they found out that the arrowhead probably dates back 8,000 to 11,000 years. The family says they plan to donate it to a museum after noah shows it to his class. Quite the show and tell. A warning to anyone who will be driving in center city, philadelphia tomorrow. It happened around 9 00 this morning at the best western in dunmore, lackawanna county. About 30 people were taken to local hospitals to get checked out for possible Carbon Monoxide inhalation. The hotel will remain closed until further notice. A deadly motorcycle crash closed several lanes of interstate 95 in Delaware County today. It happened just before 10 00 this morning in ridley township. A 24yearold man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a guardrail and was thrown from his bike. Two southbound lanes of i95 were closed following the crash. A heads up for anyone driving in gladwin over the next few weeks. A paving project is set to begin on conshohocken state road tomorrow. A threemile stretch will be closed within the work zone areas. You can expect detour signs and flag crews to direct drivers to other roads between the hours of 8 00 in the morning and 5 00 p. M. The search continues for the gunman who shot and killed two women in philadelphia. The pair found shot in holmes berg yesterday. It happened on vista street near edmond street. The victims were 47 and 54 years old. One of the victims was found downstairs. The other upstairs. Neighbors tell us the woman who lived in the home was like a grandmother to everyone on the block. Philadelphia police are investigating a pair of stabbings overnight. One of them involving a sword. A 34yearold man was critically hurt when he was stabbed in the neck just after 2 00 this morning. It happened outside the good times bar on the 5500 block of lands down avenue in west philadelphia. Police say one of the attackers was armed with a sword, the other with a baseball bat. No arrests have been made. A man is recovering while another is in custody after a stabbing in kensington. It happened just after 1 00 this morning on the 2000 block of East Allegheny avenue. Detectives say a 28yearold man was stabbed in the back. Hes in stable condition. Police tell us they have a suspect in custody. A planned peace rally took on new meaning in missouri today. Hundreds of people gathered for peace fest 2014 in st. Louis. The annual festival, which encourages peace over violence, took on new resonance in the wake of the death of michael brown.
