Reporter some are concerned, but theres no need to worry just yet because that strike authorization vote is scheduled to happen later this afternoon. Yet even if it does go through, riders still have time to come up with a plan b. One after another, the broad street line departs to pick up and drop off passengers throughout the city. How much do you depend on the service . Every day. And im an hour and a half away from my job. So if they were to strike, i wouldnt be able to get into work. Reporter the 4,700 members of transport Workers Union local 234 have been without a contract since march. Those workers operate the subways, trolleys, buses and maintenance. If a strike is authorized, Union Leadership says they will decide a date and time to shut off the lights and walk off the job. Thats crazy. That would put me in harms way. Id be stranded. Reporter riders are tired of the back and forth between the union and septa. Both sides say theyre working toward an agreement. Key sticking points have been pensions and health care. Vivienne brooks thinks the workers should get what they want. They work just like we do every day. Everybody should be treated fair. Everybody needs their transportation. Everybody needs their job. Reporter but a grinding halt is something this rider isnt willing to support. Youre going to make it hard for a lot of people. People that work 24 7. The people that are here are going to be okay. Theyre going to be on vacation. But the people that struggle every day wont have no way to get to work or get to school. Reporter septa says it has not received notice that a work stoppage is imminent, but if and when that does happen, a Service Interruption plan will go into effect to keep the riders on the rails. New from overnight, a man is in Critical Condition following this crash in northeast philadelphia. Nbc 10 was on the scene where two pickup trucks collided around 12 30 this morning. Police are now investigating the cause of this crash. Today the u. S. Ambassador to the United Nations is in west africa visiting the countries hit hardest by ebola. Samantha power arrived in guinea this morning. She will also visit liberia and sierra leone. Shell meet with u. S. And u. N. Personnel in the region. Her visit is intended to draw attention to the need for increased attention to the outbreak. Florida is the latest to require mandatory monitoring of travelers coming in from west africa. New jersey, new york, and illinois already have quarantines in place. Its in response to the case of dr. Craig spencer. He arrived from liberia and became ill with the deadly virus this week. Ebola survivors warn that the 21day quarantine could discourage volunteers from going overseas to help take care of the people with the virus. Writebol was one of the First Americans diagnosed with the deadly virus. She contracted it while working as a missionary in liberia. Arkansas a nurse quarantined at a hospital in newark because she had contact with ebola patients is criticizing the way she says shes being treated. As we told you yesterday morning, preliminary tests for ebola came back negative for nurse kaci hickox. Newark University Hospital is not saying if shell remain there for the rest of the 21day quarantine period or if shell be released. Yesterday in the dallas morning news, hickox called the measure a frenzy of disorganization and fear that has made her feel like a criminal. This weekend in our area, the coalition of west african countries affected by ebola held a rally to raise awareness and money in southwest philadelphia. The coalition is made up of people and organizations with ties to guinea, liberia, and sierra leone. In the Philadelphia School budget crisis, a state judge is expected to rule this week on the legal flap between the Teachers Union and the School District. An injunction issued last week stopped the School District from forcing teachers to contribute to their health care benefits. District officials are appealing that decision. The judge will determine this week if the case can stay in state Commonwealth Court or be moved to philadelphia common pleas court. Now to decision 2014. With elections across the country a little more than a week away, a visit to iowa by new Jersey Governor Chris Christie is feeding the ongoing speculation that he may run for president in 2016. In his speech during a birthday bash for iowas governor last night, christie said america used to control events both here at home and around the world, and now it seems that our fate is being dictated by others. Election day, november 4th. Six more states are now recognizing samesex marriages. Alaska, arizona, idaho, north carolina, west virginia, and wyoming are joining 26 other states and washington, d. C. Couples married in these states will qualify for federal benefits. The Justice Department has also determined that samesex marriages performed in indiana and wisconsin will be legally recognized after federal courts declared the state marriage bans unconstitutional. Were now learning that some of the victims are related to the gunman. Theyve also learned that a newlyhired teacher confronted the gunman who has been identified as jaylen fryberg. A witness says that the teacher intercepted fryberg as he was trying to reload. The attack left one girl dead and four others seriously hurt. Police say that fryberg took his own life at the scene. According to family members, he was targeting friends and relatives. Two of the victims turned out to be his cousins. He had a look on his face like he was just realizing what he did. And i think he kind of had a change of heart and if he wanted to, he could have gone on. While a motive is still unknown, friends say that fryberg recently got into an argument with another student over a racial slur that was made. Meanwhile, Law Enforcement sources claim he may have been in a recent dispute over a girl. People in canada are also in mourning this weekend after the loss of a soldier who was shot and killed in ottawa on wednesday. They held a candlelight vigil in honor of Corporal Nathan cirillo. A military funeral is planned for Corporal Cirillo this tuesday. It will be held at christchurch cathedral in hamilton, his hometown. The soldier was killed by michael zehafbibeau. He ran into parliament hill. He died there in a shootout with police. His motive remains unknown, but canadas Prime Minister is calling this shooting a terror attack. A homeowner called firefighters yesterday saying that his horse fell into the swimming pool. A veterinarian was also called to the scene to tranquilize the animal. Were talking about type 1 diabetes. According to research, the number of cases has increased 70 in the past 20 years. But as Chris Kay Doe reports, a local man reports theres a lot of support for People Living with the disease. He doesnt like needles now, so imagine what how it was when a doctor told him hed have to do to manage his disease. For a 6yearold, to have to take injections every day and prick your finger for blood sugar, its scary. Reporter nate eventually eliminated the needles but it was a constant reminder that hes different from the other kids. I had to explain to my friends that im diabetic. My whole life changed. Reporter his life changed again at age 8 when his mom forced him to go to a new camp called camp freedom. I called all the way home because i didnt want to go. I cried all the way home because i didnt want to leave. Reporter there nate found himself surrounded by 100 other kids with camp 1 dtype 1 diabet. Hes been to camp every year since 2001, and is now a head counselor, teaching kids that diabetes doesnt have to put limits on them. And thats just his summer job. At camp, nate was recruited to work for the American Diabetes association. He coordinates special events like the one coming up november 1st, step out, walk to stop diabetes. Philadelphias is the largest in the country and this year with the help of 6,000 walkers, think hope to be the first to raise a million dollars. Money that will Fund Programs like camp freedom and more importantly, says nate, research to find a cure. Not only for me, but for my friends and campers. Listen to this. Five years after nate was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, so was his brother at age 13, which is why raising money to Fund Research for a cure is such a personal cause for them.
