with the families killed in the explosion that started it all. kristen dahlgren is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. with the latest, the researchers are trying to determine the flow rate. 20,000 to 40,000 barrel as day were flowing out of the leak. that was before the riser pipe was cut. as you said, somewhere between 42 million and 100 million barrels of oil already in the gulf of mexico. we could get the estimates for what has been flowing since they cut that riser later today. meantime that oil could make its closest approach to land sometime later on today. the noaa forecast shows the entire slick moving somewhere between mobile and pensacola today. at this point we've just seen pieces of that oil slick making landfall. and there are new reports that the workers hired by bp are now restricting media coverage of both the oil clean-up and the wildlife recovery efforts. i know that along the beaches, i've been trying to talk to those workers, and they told me that they signed agreements, and they were not able to talk at all. and president obama met with ten of the families who lost victims in that initial explosion. just one more reminder, lynn, of what has been lost so far here. >> absolutely, kristen. thank you. after five long years the family of natalee holloway may be one step closer to close euro. nbc news has learned from peruvian police that joran van der sloot claims to know where holloway's remains are and he's willing to tell authorities in aruba where to find them. meanwhile peruvian officials also say they believe robbery was the motive in the murder of stephany flores who van der sloot has confessed to killing. authorities believe flores resisted. if convicted on murder charges van der sloot could get up to 35 years in a peruvian prison notorious for those conditions. federal authorities say they've pulled off one of the, quote, most extensive operations in drug cartels. according to u.s. officials more than 400 suspects across 16 states were arrested this week. the massive sweep also netted $5.8 million in cash, nooeearly 3,000 pounds of mairn and 15,000 pounds of cocaine. this week's raids bart part of a large 2er 2-month effort that result in over 2,000 arrests and the seizure of over 74 tons of illegal drugs. there are new developments in the deadly shooting of a mexican teenager by a u.s. border patrol agent in downtown el paso. grainy cell phone video obtained by the spannish television network captures the shooting. you can see the border agent in the white shirt and dark shorts fires a gun at 15-year-old sergio hernandez who was buried thursday. the u.s. says the agent was defending himself after being pelted with rocks. mexico says that was a disproportion gnat use of force. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. ohio police are searching for a robbery suspect who fled from officers after a high-speed chase. dash cam video shows the man making dangerous turns in his car before flipping into a ditch. one person was taken into custody after he exited the vehicle, but the driver ran off before authorities could arrest him. there were some tense moments in california for seven children and three adult whose got stuck on a broken ferris wheel. authorities say the group spent around two hours in midair until firefighters helped them onto a rescue ladder. fort nadleh everyone got safely back to the ground. students all across new york were up against the clog clock yesterday taking part in the rubik's cube competition. the goal was to see who could crack the code in the fastest time. while no one broke the world record of 19 seconds some fast-fingered kids were able to solve the puzzle in under a minute and a half. and nbc affiliate in flint, michigan, had an interrupted guest. they discovered a raccoon running around. while, the hairy situation lasted about 20 minutes before who else, the weather man saved the day and saying in a live shock. o down near the bay beaches it looks like the oil sheen is going to come closer to pensacola this week than it has any time during that whole spill. so those pictures will not be pretty this weekend. we have newseumous places with heavy rain and thunderstorms in the middle of the country. the eastern seaboard you look fine today and dry for most of the day. here's the problem areas. so far we've seen severe weather racing through nebraska, heading through sioux falls and sioux city. heavy rain in those areas of the northern plains. also in a, our little ball of convection continues. it was in san antonio two days ago, outside of dallas yesterday and today right over little rock with heavy rain. the east coast, no problems. just like summer. it's the middle of the kun interest that's going to see the on and off thundershowers on friday. that's a look at the national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. thunderstorms could be observed. keep that in mind. and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. taking a look at overseas the dow opens at 10,172 after soaring 273 points yesterday. the s&p added 31. the nasdaq went up 59. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei rose 162 points while in hong kong the hang seng gained 239. signs of life in the global economy led stocks on a huge comeback on thursday improving economic data overseas and here at home kick started the day's swift and sweeping rally. it sparked optimism over europe's ongoing debt problems. meanwhile china's solid exhort data added to the upbeat mood, fueled by an unexpected job in weekly jobless claims. investors snapped up bargains across the board with energy stocks leading the way. bp shot up 12%, a day after its 16% drop. housing stocks got a boost from a proposed 3-month extension to a home buyer tax credit while foreclosures continues to drop. but the day's momentum couldn't hem goldman sachs. the securities & exchange commission is investigating the firm for more mortgage-linked deals. gold man's shares fell 2%. meanwhile the s.e.c.'s new rules are set for a six-month experimental start today. the so-called circuit breaker is designed to trigger a trading halt in a single stock that moves up or down by 10% in a five-minute period. and keep an eye on national semiconductor today. it beat the street's quarterly earnings after the bell. the network is bracing for record-breaking power surges at the cup. the expected increase for saturday's match between the walters art museum, well, now here's an early look at this morning's headlines in entertainment. the green ogre has seen its day. this weekend two new films with lots of advanced hype will battle it out.
