Now to the big story of yesterday and really, all weekend. Today, crews will begin dismantling that massive, massive crane that collapsed on hudson street early yesterday morning. One person, of course, as you know by now, tragically killed in the accident. Several others injured as well. Several leaders are expected to deliver an update on where we go from here. Good morning, marcus. Some of those officials are arriving here an interagency briefing taking place at new York Law School, but you can see there is still quite a ways to go as far as the cleanup. Here is part of the massive crane that came down yesterday. It is still lying across worth street. Construction workers on another project watched in disbelief as the massive crane crashed down at worth and Church Streets just before 8 30 yesterday morning as heavy snow hit the area and crews were trying to secure the crane in high winds. 38yearold david wicks was walking to work, killed when the tons of steel came raining down. City officials said workers had begun blocking traffic as they lowered the crane, preventing further tragedy. The fact is, this is a very, very sad incident. Weve lost a life, but if you go out in the street as i did and see what happened here, thank god it was not worse. Reporter three others were you can see people rushing in to help 73yearold Thomas Obrien who was trapped when the crane fell on top of his car. A 45yearold new jersey woman suffered a leg injury. And it sent a headache ball through the roof of a nearby swung through offices eventually landing on a desk. Due to the fact that it was 8 25, were lucky because no one was hurt. At 9 00, the office would have been occupied and the street would have had more people. Reporter what exactly caused the crane to come toppling down, and how long will it take to get everything cleaned up and get the streets reopened, hoping to learn answers later today when the city officials hold a briefing around 1 00 this afternoon . As the mayor said yesterday, it could have been so much worse. A Police Officer for the mta is behind bars this morning charged with beating up an eighth grader at a school in the bronx. Turns out the victim was trying to break up another fight. We have the story from the castle hill section. Reporter he claims he was not only attacked by a classmate but a students dad, an mta Police Officer who allegedly joined in. The eighth grader says it defend at student from the alleged bully here at the prep school. He punched me really hard and then he moved on top of my son hitting him in the head. He said to his son to draw blood. Reporter under the advice of their lawyer, sanford rubenstein, justin did not make a statement, rather, his father shawn harris explained what happened after the school day ended yesterday. He had lacerations on his arms, some scratches on his back. Where he punched him, there was a bruise. What the family wants is for this Port Authority Police Officer to be held accountable for what he did. He doesnt want to speak to you guys at all. Reporter Police Officers at the suspects home in the bronx says family members refused to talk to us when we went searching for the other side of the story. I think that this is something that hes teaching to his son, you know . So what does he expect his son to grow up and do. Reporter he worked at the queens midtown tunnel. Its really going to be nice outside through the afternoon hours, but beware, places that do get the snow overnight saw melting, and were right at the Freezing Point. So temperatures around the low 30s, this could be a problem. Then as we get into the afternoon with plenty of sunshine, temperatures above normal going into the low 40s. So we get started this morning with the winds a lot calmer. Things are a lot more pleasant couple of days around here. So we look forward to a beautiful saturday afternoon, and then sundaysing good, too. High so far has been 32 degrees. Warm it up maybe 10 to 12 from that point. Heres the futurecast. This is what ive been watching to see what kind of problems we could potentially have early this morning. Looks like there are only a few spots through parts of long island. Temperatures this morning are near the Freezing Point and today with more melting and tonight we could see the freezing numbers showing up. The close call around 30, 33 degrees in some areas, so slick spots is the way to cause this one where you could have melting and freezing. Beautiful skies, not showing any storms for the weekend. Keeping a close eye on two systems. One is coming out of the Pacific Northwest. That one will bring the return of the cold air. First up, this low pressure the golf and its farther to the east. We get a piece of it. Tonight, patchy clouds and slick spots off to the east. Were colder in the outlying areas. Tomorrow, sunny, mild, and party on for the super bowl. If you are heading out to be with friends or out in the city, it will be nice. Heres the sevenday forecast. A reminder on monday when this comes through, this could really mean flakes off to the east. So snow showers for parts of long island. Just a glancing blow here at the shore. We might get snow showers coming and going, but this is really actually an interesting one to watch because it could give us a residual effect where we get a little bit of snow tuesday and wednesday as well. Even thursday we get the opportunity to see snow showers around here. None of these days look like major significant little is sometimes enough to mess things up especially with the timing on the commute. It made it all pretty again for a hot minute money. When its not a lot of it, then weep act all seasoned. Meantime its melting. Forecast. Hey, you. The wild winds, wow. I know they will be looking into the crane today but the winds were the reason they were starting to reign things in there. Up. It turned up to be wild gusts and everything is calmer this morning. As the sun comes up, look for a high of 43 degrees this afternoon. Bringing that up because of the snow yesterday. A lot of it started to melt. We go freezing tonight and wake up with slick spots. Winds are coming out. North, very light. Turns out to be a beautiful afternoon with more melting during the day. Todays crews will begin to break down the massive crane that collapsed on hudson street. One person was killed and several others were hurt. This morning, city officials are expected to deliver an update. Marcus solis picks it up from there. Marcus . Reporter needless to say, this is a huge job. Its clear that there are still huge sections of that crane lying in the street lying across worth street at this hour. It was around 8 00 yesterday when workers with are trying to bring that boom, which extends instead of coming down in a controlled manner, the crane went into a free fall crashing down the length of two city blocks along with bricks and debris. A 4,000 pound ball called a headache ball landed in the office of a new York Law School. One person killed, three others injured. It was a massive Emergency Response, and the streets in the area shut down. The big question remains just exactly what happened . Its a capacity of 330 tons so it is a large crane and perfectly fine in the way that it was engineered, but obviously, it requires an investigation as to why this happened. Reporter 38yearold david wicks was killed. He was walking down the street. Two other people seriously injured. One man had been trapped in his car. Good samaritans rushed to try and free him. A kissing ban, yes, a kissing ban over concerns about the zika virus possibly spreading. Health officials in brazil are warning everyone to avoid kissing anyone who is not your regular mate, especially pregnant women. Meanwhile, Rockland County confirming its first case of the zika virus. A resident who recently traveled to a south American Country where zika is present came back sick with the virus. The video appeared on facebook this week showing someone throwing a punch and apparently knocking out a victim on a Street Corner in patterson. You can kill someone. Patterson Police Called the video disturbing and thanked the good people of patterson who immediately reported it. So scary. Murder charges have been dropped against a man accused of brutally stabbing someone several years ago. The bronx d. A. Announced all charges against javier enger will be dropped. He was accused of stabbing and killing hansel arias in 2012. He was seen clearly not participating in a chase that led to the victims death. The investigation chicago where six family members were all found dead in what police are calling a targeted incident. Investigators say five of the family members, two boys ages 10 and 12, two men and one woman were all stabbed to death. Another woman was shot and killed. Their bodies were found thursday and neighbors were shocked to find out what happened. No screaming, no fighting, we never heard nothing, never. Weve been here for eight years. Being so close, we feel like maybe we could have i dont know, noticed something. Investigators initially thought it was a murder suicide. The medical examiner has ruled all of the deaths homicides. Police say, though there was no danger to the public. Several people have been arrested on drug charges in indiana and are now linked to an outbreak of hiv in their community. A huge outbreak. Investigators of say the drug ring flooded the area with meth to spread by sharing needles. Scott county saw 188 indications of hiv over of the last 13 months. Compare that with the usual 10 cases a year. Ten people were taken into custody including the socalled head of the drug ring. Behind bars in an adult jail in texas. This is the latest mug shot of 18yearold ethan couch brought back into the country last week after being arrested along with his mother in mexico. The two are believed to have gone on the run after a video surfaced of him playing beer pong, a violation of his parole in a car crash that killed four people. State inspectors are testing the water supply at restaurants throughout flint, michigan, as the city deals with water contaminated by lead. Restaurants and bars are being encouraged to install water filters. Outside right now, we have some places right around the Freezing Point, and that could create slick spots. We had the snow yesterday, so if you got over 6 inches, we had melting yesterday and mainly parts of long island and parts of connecticut really have this stretch of refreezing overnight. It could be slick in spots. Beautiful skies out there starting with this shot looking in Lower Manhattan. Pressure is on the rise and a look at area wide temperatures, there are very cold spots particularly around commack at 23. 33 degrees. Those are the spots that are subfreezing, which had a lot of snow yesterday melting. Looking at the 24hour temperature change. Friday morning, you thought it was okay, comfortable. The winds did make it have sort but these temperatures are much colder by as much as 20 degrees. Fresh snow on the ground adds to the feel of being colder. Mainly the areas of darker blue is what were talking about. So melting again today for the critical times are late at night and early in the morning where you could see especially intersections sometimes right outside of your own front door. Two storms to watch this week. The fist one is a low pressure system. This will actually bring the cold air back. Were going to have two mild days around here. This one originating from the Pacific Northwest will spring in and bring us colder air. First, we deal with this storm. This is the coastal storm thats going down into the gulf and ride up the east coast. This one right here, we basically dodge the most significant snow, but we still get snow showers out of it. Not a big deal, but still could give us snow from time to time as we get into the early part of the workweek all the way to wednesday. Icy spots earlier then the melting 32. Tomorrow, super weather for the super bowl is really going to be nice. 47. If you are out and about, you have family over, its gorgeous. We continue with the melting over the weekend. There were only two others like this one in the entire country. People and their beliefs, black people, could the sisters be religious . Here were here for a hundred years. Reporter it also extends to this nursery in harlem run by the group since the 1920s. As for their next mission, the nuns say the new focus will be on homeless youth. We are all children of the same god. Black or white, we should be kind. So when is the cold air back and could we see more snow as we move into whats considered sort of prime time for Storm Development late february into march. The winds have certainly settled down 18 to 20 mileper hour winds. Thats all weve gop and everything is much calmer than yesterday. Looking on the active track, weve got no threat of showers and winds coming in very light for most of the area. Well see the last of the gusts letting up by 9 30, 10 00 in morning. A 40yearold man is now charged in a deadly stabbing just after 7 00 last night at east 164st street and river avenue. Police say a 43yearold man arm and a 27yearold man was slashed on his hand. The victims were both taken to the hospital for the 43 where the 43yearold man passed away. A man was taken into custody at the scene and is charged with murder. Clean up crews were back in tribeca mapping out plans to haul away the 500foot crane off of the street. The crane did collapse yesterday morning killing one person, three others hurt and today were expected to learn more about what caused that crane to fall. Eyewitness News Reporter marcus solis joins us live from tribeca with the story. Marcus . Reporter city workers at various agencies are now coming out of new York Law School and interagency briefings taking place early this morning as they get up to speed on what is going on with the situation with this crane, which you can see extends across worth street. How to clean things up. Construction workers on another project watched in disbelief as the massive crane crashed down at worth and Church Street lights just before 8 30 yesterday morning as heavy snow hit the area and crews were trying to secure the crane in high winds. 38yearold david wicks was walking to work, killed when the tons of steel came raining down. City Officials Say workers had begun blocking traffic as they lowered the crane, preventing further tragedy. The fact,this is incident, weve lost a life. If you go out on the street as i did and see what happened here, thank god it was not worse. Reporter three others were hurt, two seriously. You can see people rushing in to help free 73yearold Thomas Obrien, who was trapped when the crane fell on top of his car. A 45yearold new jersey woman suffered a leg injury and the force of the collapse sent the headache ball through the roof of a nearby law school where it swung through officers, due to the fact 8 25, were lucky no one else got hurt because at 9 00, this Office Looks Like it would have. Occupied and the street would have had more people. Reporter again, a very active scene here in Lower Manhattan aas officials discuss and begin the cleanup process which is expected to take a couple of days. This is a starting off picture from manhattan. The Empire State Building with 86 flights this week. Down to the battery, 1 world trade. I think the empire is just as hard. Both of them have done the climbs. Tough to get up those stairs but a real thrill. The Empire State Building, the cool thing about that is you finish at night. Tonight well be clear. Temperatures fall again below freezing with fresh snow on the ground. The windchills are not quite what they were yesterday, we definitely have a cold start out there, be aware that any spots spell below freezing last so anywhere between 5 to 10 inches of snow tonight, the areas of blue are the most vulnerable this morning and tonight. The sunshine will help with the melting and well be talking about storms and the potential for snowfall. For the next seven hours, heres what weve got. Mid to upper 30s and high of 43 in new york city. Ill have the accuweather sevenday, up next. Topping our news this half hour, the massive crane collapse caused a huge mess in tribeca. The cleanup efforts get under way this morning and the investigation, as you can imagine, has also now been launched into what caused all of this. Marcus solis joins us now from tribeca with more details. Hi, marcus. Reporter we can tell you at full daylight, were seeing more workers arriving surrounding the section of the crane that we can see from our vantage point, but of course, it will be quite some time before they get that all out of here. It was 8 00 yesterday morning. You with are down here when workers tried to bring that boom down and then it crashed down. 500 foot boom was coming down in a controlled manner and then it became a free fall and crashed down onto worth street. The 4,000 pound ball called the headache ball landed in the office of new York Law School. One person killed, three others injured. There was the billing Emergency Response that shut down streets in the area. As we said, the big question remains what caused that crane to topple over . Its the capacity of 330 tons so it is a very, very large crane. Perfectly fine in terms of the way it was engineered, but obviously, it requires an investigation as to why this happened. 38yearold david wicks was killed. Crane came down. Another person was trapped in his car, and another woman was injured, suffered a leg injury. As the mayor said, this could have been much, much worse. Crews were actually in the process of clearing the streets as they were trying to bring accident occurred. Again, the cleanup, the investigation, the focus of what is going on here today, and were expecting an update from city officials around 1 00 this afternoon. We are learning more details about a suspect wanted in a string of frightening robberies on a subway that ended with two victims lashed. Police have released they are looking for. They believe he is responsible for at least four robberies since late last month. Three of them on subway trains during two of the crimes, police tell us the suspects cut knife. A man was sucker punched on the street in new jersey. Youll see it happen. Unfortunately, they are also videotaping it. Its called the knockout game. This insane, dangerous, potentially deadly trend has police on high alert. Again this is a random crime. This video appeared on facebook this week showing someone throwing a punch and knocking out a victim on a street coroner patterson. Police called the video disturbing. They are looking for the person responsible and thanked people who lived there for reporting it. Lets hope they find him very quickly, yeah. In other news, the so called aflew insaturday teen is jail in texas. This is the latest mug shot of the 18yearold, ethan couch, who was brought back into the country last week after he and his mother fled to mexico after a video surfaced showing couch playing beer pong, which is a violation of his parole stemming from a drunk driving crash in which he killed four people. Hes getting ready to be 19 years old. He is an adult. He doesnt need to be housed in a juvenile decision in my opinion. That wasnt my decision to make. I feel more comfortable with him in a more secure environment. Right now, couchs case is under the jurisdiction of juvenile court. Here in the city, we dont have that problem. Looking at the numbers throughout the day, we go for a high of 43 degrees. The clouds will come and go. Official reporting station central park gives us 41 and we have mid to upper teens with more than 6 inches of snow. Winds are so much calmer today. 20s, 30s and teens checking in at 18 right now. Looking across the maps, temperatures are 15 to 20 degrees colder than they were at the same time. Islip has the changes with much colder air at the surface. Current snow dabs working our way in and a lot of spots holding on to several inches, 5 to 8 inches. Some places holding onto 10 inches of snow money well continue to get some melting. The main northeast is off of connecticut and long island. Our eyes are actually following two weather features that are important to know about. Were able to look at them. The fist one coming out of the Pacific Northwest. This one will produce snow air. Also, the other system coming out of the gulf doesnt look like much but swings in and coast. We dodge significant snow from this, but were on the track where we can get a couple of inches on the east side. Were in el nino season. Lee goldberg talked about how were heading into the stormy pattern. So the next ten days can be hit or miss snow showers. Right now, the best chance for accumulating snow in the next stormy track. Third week of february is still stormy. Late february into early march, these are the times that are most favorable for storm in the climate history, but does the weather match up . At least two, perhaps three of our top five snowstorms in history have come february into march. Right now its just a hit or miss shower snow showing up monday, tuesday, wednesday, even thursday. These are lighter accumulations. Right now, were not predicting any significant stopdown snow. Definitely storms to watch this week that we can keep our eye on. The sevenday forecast also takes us down to the Freezing Point for the daytime high on friday. So plenty of cold air to work with day seven through ten. So headsup. Because did you see the jet streams . Favorable positions, rob. That jet stream. Im just glad its going to be warmer because i was so careful to get all of the slush morning and its like what were not fearing too much for tuesday, right . Ill take it. It utilizes professional performance. It hopes the nonprofit brings an entirely new generation of theater goers. I think theres a long range involving and resulting from these types of activities is really quite extensive. Its like taking a pebble and dropping it into a pond and you see the ripples that come out from it. Reporter part of the program is possible because of grants tying directly into the curriculum. In class, the kids learn about the harlem renaissance and Duke Ellington. These kids also go to an after school program. Its exciting and they are doing everything correctly. We have 26 different languages spoken at home for our students. Here with the arts, it levels the Playing Field for those students that havent caught up either academically or with their language skills. Cleanup continues on Lower Manhattan where investigators are looking into what caused that deadly crane collapse. Eyewitness News Reporter marcus solis is live with more. Reporter just a short time ago we saw a smaller crane being moved into place. Presumably, cranes will be used to lift out sections of crane big cleanup job ahead after the accident yesterday morning. A 500foot boom cable came crashing down across the lengths of two city blocks down on worth street. A 4,000 pound ball called the headache ball attached to the lifting cable crashing through one of the offices at new York Law School. It was a fatal accident. 38yearold david wick, a pedestrian on his way to work was killed. Three other people seriously injured. The mayor pointing out that crews were trying to shut down the street. This could have been much, much worse, but it was a very serious and fatal accident. The cause is still under investigation. Crews were trying to secure it in bad weather. Also, how long the cleanup will take. Two Big Questions that will be answered at a briefing later this morning. Were live in tribeca, channel 7 Eyewitness News.
