Sparta Police Responded to a box truck on fire, on route 15, saturday afternoon. And officers got the driver and a passenger out safely, and with only seconds to spare. Look at that. The tables are turned when it is a cop car that is pulled over. A miami driver says she was frightened by a speeding police vehicle, so she started rolling on her cell phone camera and took matters into her own hands. She chased down the officer. He first thought that she had an emergency. When she told the officer why she chased him down, he apologized. All new this half hour, dangerous criminals are off the streets thanks to a recent addition to one Police Departments crimefighting arsenal. In just three months, in setting up license plate readers, Freeport Police made arrests and handed out thousands of violations. Well now, a reporter, kristen thorn, live there with more on dave and charlene, it is even more than that. Freeport officials announced that these cameras helped them track down a man wanted for burglarizing several churches in Nassau County and an alleged car thief and a man wanted for murder in virginia who was driving through freeport allegedly with a loaded rifle in his car. They say these cameras have viewed 15 million license plates in the thats about 2,000 license plates per minute. And the program is called Operation Safe streets. And freeport officials tell us that 25 people had been arrested since they installed these cameras, about 90 days ago. The cameras cost about 750,000 to install. And the plates are monitored 24 7, by police, in the precinct and in patrol vehicles. And they essentially alert Police Officers, if a hit comes up, or lets say a stolen vehicle, or a vehicle involved in some crime. The freeport Officials Say the cameras had been working amazingly well. The project, we have impounded over 548 vehicles, 2008 summons have been issued, and 15 stolen vehicles were returned to the owners. And 25 persons arrested. Of course, these cameras do come with some privacy concerns. The aclu has spoken out against these cameras. Ever since they were installed. But that is not stopping the freeport Police Department. They are thinking about hiring six to eight new Police Officers to deal with the workload that comes with having these cameras. Were live in freeport, kristen thorn, channel 7 eyewitness news. Thank you, kristen. Police are still trying to find the gunmen in the frightening new video from the bronx. Two men are arguing on the street, when one of them pulls out a gun and opens fire. This happened just after 9 00 saturday night. On east burnside avenue in mount hope. The victim survived. He was hit once in the leg. Investigating a sunday morning burglary inside a church. The thief broke into the Baptist Church on elizabeth avenue, by cutting a hole in the roof. The burglar took off with some food and personal items. Despite the damage, the church staff is staying optimistic. It could have been worse. At the end of the day. This could have been worse. This could have been a tragedy that we could have been mourning somebody right now or mourning the fact that Something Else could have happened with the church but this incident is only a set back for us. The detectives want to talk to anyone who might have seen someone near the church with large amounts of canned goods. A pair of Virginia Tech College Students are due in court to face charges in the kidnapping and murder of a 13 yearold girl. But right now, the motive behind the murder remains a mystery. Abcs megan hughes is live in washington with the details. Reporter 18yearold Virginia Tech engineering student David Eisenhauer appeared in court today, facing firstdegree murder charges. Police say he kidnapped and killed 13yearold nicole lovell. Very easily been one of my really hits home. Reporter also in shock, the maryland communities of the two teenaged suspects. Natalie keepers charged as an accessory accused of helping eisenhauer dispose of the girls body. Police say eisenhauer new lovell and that he used that relationship to his advantage. People are in distress at this point. And they could use your prayer. Catherine lives a few doors down from eisenhauers maryland home, a High School Track star. She feels for his parents. That has to be the blackest day of their lives. After arresting eisenhauer saturday morning for abduction, loveles body was found 80 miles away. She vanished, after pushing a dresser against her bedroom door and climbing out her window. More than 1,000 volunteers joined the search. Family and friends worry transplant as a young child and needed daily medication. I didnt think that would happen to her. Because she was always the cutest little thing. Residents in Lower Manhattan will soon hear a lot less noise from helicopters giving tours above the city. After a deal to cut the number of tours flying over manhattan in half. People who lived near pier six have complained about the noise as helicopters fly overhead. And now the city and tour operators have agreed to dramatically reduce the number but some people think having 30,000 fewer flights could harm the citys tourism industry. It takes away from the character of the city, when you start taking away tourism options for people. I think it is great. At the same time, it just the business, it is up and down. So tour operators have until january of next year to reduce the number of flights, and starting in april, helicopters will no longer fly on sundays. And freed the man. And he remains in the hospital. And is being treated for leg injuries and hypothermia but is alive. An 11yearold boy who is interested in football checked out a library book in central new jersey, and it doesnt the beginning, but he never returned it. And now that child is 83 years old.
