Turning now to that Major Development tonight in the case against five teenagers accused of raping a young woman in a park in brooklyn. All but one of the teenagers tonight free without bond because prosecutors now admitting they need more time to investigate. Eyewitness News Reporter Kemberly Richardson is in East New York tonight with the very latest developments. Kem. Reporter well, liz, prosecutors were up against a critical deadline. They had until tomorrow to secure indictments against all five suspects but late today officials acknowledge that simply was not going to happen, that they need more time to gather evidence. And so one suspect, 17yearold travis beckford, who lives here getting a refund, three other suspects are also now out of jail but they are not out of the woods. Going through several variations. I think youre all familiar with my admonition when we begin these things preliminary, nevertheless reporter today investigators went back to the victims home to speak with the 18yearold woman and her father in a case that is far from simple, one that centers around what did and did not happen in this brownsville park one week ago today. Officials charged five young men with, among other things, raping the victim. The men faced a judge and were jailed. But a significant development, brooklyn District Attorney ken thompson saying his office needs more time to investigate this case, gather more evidence. Because of that, three suspects are now been released from jail. A fourth who was able to make bail will get a refund. Dna and video analysis just some of the elements involved here. Police did release this surveillance video, a turning point. Soon after the suspects ranging in age from 14 to 17, were behind bars. Did you recognize these guys . No, no. Reporter when your dad left you, what were you thinking . I was just real scared. I didnt know what to do. I was in a panic mode. Reporter tonight the District Attorney says hes determined to get to the truth about what happened in that now, looking ahead, prosecutors will use the next 180 days to try and build a case that may or may not lead to an indictment. As for that fifth suspect, he remains behind bars tonight because he violated terms of a prior arrest. For now we are live in East New York, Kemberly Richardson, channel 7 Eyewitness News. They were on a winter break and doing things that mattered, good things, good deeds for other people. 30 students and volunteers from Columbia University, they were in Central America over winter break but on their way to the airport to come home yesterday, their bus flipped over. Reporter well, bill, one was from rockland county, one was from manhattan and one was from cincinnati, but all of them had high hopes. They all wanted to help people, they all wanted to heal people lost three of their own. Very good person, we loved her very much. Reporter all of them loved for who they were and how they went about their lives. These three students from Columbia University killed in a bus crash yesterday here in honduras where they ironically had gone to help save lives. Lisa schacher was best friends with 45yearold student and Nurse Practitioner abigail flanagan, studying at Columbia University with the hopes of becoming a doctor one day. In the meantime, it was all about community service. That defines abbie, that trip. Abbie was always a very caring person, a giving person. Reporter so was the junior Daniela Moffson who grew up on manhattans Upper East Side which is where her funeral will take place tomorrow. Sophomore Olivia Erhardt grew up in cincinnati but all of those killed had plenty in they wanted to help heal people. We need to remember all lives that are lost too soon for whatever reason. I think probably something olivia would say. Reporter at columbia, vigils already being planned before the students returned from their winter breaks. 25 others had joined these three on the trip through a Nonprofit Group called global brigades, and others were injured. Student hanna bender of scarsdale among those still in critical condition. Meanwhile, abigail flanagans 19yearold son patrick, lucky enough to walk away with scrapes and bruises, friends say, you can see him here in white at the accident scene moments before he lost his mother. And students here at columbia are just returning from their winter breaks now telling us a private vigil is taking place this evening. Mayor de blasio today criticized governor cuomos plans to get hundreds of millions of dollars in education and medical funding to new york city. The governor unveiled those cuts during his state of the state address yesterday. This is just the latest public battle between the two most powerful democrats in new york. Political reporter dave is in the newsroom tonight with much more. David. My simple Statement Today is we will fight these cuts. Reporter the mayor today never blasted the governor by name but he did rip his budget, unveiled yesterday in albany. Two items in the budget that are not fair to new york city york city that will set us back. Reporter those two things are a 485 million cut to City University and between 180 and 300 million to medicaid reimbursements. The mayor and governor have bickered plenty in the last few months. De blasio today though actually praised cuomo for things like a 4 boost to schools. But on those cuts he was angry. I thank him for the good elements and i will fight for the cuts unfair to this city. I dont take things personally, i have a job to do. Reporter he questioned why is the city complaining . He spoke of more money for schools, a big boost to the mta which affects mostly the city and yesterday he earmarked 20 billion to help the poor and homeless to find better housing. 20 billion for helping the homeless which is a real priority for the mayor and for me and for every new yorker for so its very, very strong in terms of program and dollars for new york city. Reporter still sources say the mayor is plenty ticked and state cuts could drastically affect his own city budget coming next week. When i turn around in todays day and age and say to washington and albany, we are in trouble now, the calvary is not coming. Lets be very clear. Its just not. Maybe in 1975 but not anymore.
