Good day every one. Welcome to weekends with alex wi witt. Here is whats happening at 2 00 p. M. Eastern. This breaking news, a nationwide man hunt and new charges for those rioters who stormed capitol hill including jacob from arizona known as the qanon shaman. Adam johnson, a father from florida is charged with theft of Government Property after he was seen removing the speakers lek turn. Also charge, West Virginia republican state lawmakers Derrick Evans who live streamed himself charging the capitol. He was taken into fbi custody at his home in as the walls are closing in on the president who is spending the weekend at the white house. Hes on the wus p cusp of facin articles of impeachment. Hakeem jeffreys expressing his outrage today. Donald trump must be removed from office immediately. He should be impeached, convicted and thrown out of 1600 pennsylvania avenue and forever banished to the dust bin of history. All this comes as the president s favorite megaphone has silenced him permanently. Twitter banning trump citing the risk of further incitement of violence. We start this hour with nbc News Reporters who have been gathering the latest for us. Whats the latest at this hour. Reporter theres a lot of security here. Its going up to 7 feet n nonscaleable fence. Theres a lot of National Guard. Hundreds of members of National Guard here all across the capitol complex. There are chatter online of what they are calling a round two. The folk will be coming on january 20th Inauguration Day. That is a very different event. Theres secret service, department of homeland security. Theres a will the of other agencies involved in that production and these barriers and serious security. Talking about the arrests, theres more than 60 people have been arrested. About 16 of them were federal crimes and about 40 of them were charged in d. C. Issue procedure your court. I want to go through them as you did earlier. First of all, theres adam johnson of florida. He was charged for stealing the lek turn out of Nancy Pelosis office. He was charged with one count of entering or remaining in any restricted building. One count of theft of Government Property. Also jacob of arizona. He was wearing horns and the bearskin. He was charged with violent entry and Disorderly Conduct on Capitol Grounds and Derrick Evans. He was the West Virginia state delegate. He broadcast his entire entry into the capitol on facebook live. The fbi, the department of justice saw that video and have arrested him as well. The fbi has put out a number of wanted signs. A number of seeking information posters of people that have took photos of themselves during this event. They took photos of themselves and put it online and fbi saw the photos and say we want to know more about you. We want to talk to you and arrest you for making those entries into the capitol illegally. Thank you so much. Lets go from there to the white house. Its not just twitter. Really a barrage of social Media Companies in just 24 hours taking action to limit this kind of behavior by the president. Facebook suspending his account through inauguration. R reddit cutting down a key sub channel and even apple and google taking action to limit the accessibility of parler. That alt right message channel similar to twitter that the president and many of his supporters have used in the past. Any moment the president could put out a press release. He could walk into the press Briefing Room at the white house and hold a News Conference in front of cameras. I guarantee you news outlets would go and cover that type of an event. Nonethele nonetheless, the president s few remaining allies including his son are arguing this is an infringement on his First Amendment rights. Take a listen. I mean, its a sad day when youre literally talking about losing free speech. Its a sad day when big tech has more power than Big Government that they can sensor the president of the United States in the face of such a full frontal assault on the foundation of america. Free speech. Its awesome to have you guys be so loving and supportive. Reporter as social Media Companies play whackamole with the president s social media accounts, the president for him to push back as House Democrats are starting what looks like impeachment proceedings that will begin at the beginning of this week to try to impeach the president for a second time. Last night when the president wanted to speak out against what has been happening over the last 48 hours or so, he tried to do it for another twitter account that hasnt been shut down. The potus account which is official u. S. Government account. Twitter said not so fast and within minutes those tweets were deleted as well. Sounds like the president has been cancelled. Appreciate that. Lets go to delaware and new reaction from the incoming president elect, joe biden on the impeachment calls. Biden has been saying throughout the campaign his first few days in office will focus on the pandemic. He said covid, covid multiple times. Does he feel the prospect of an impeachment trial would be a distraction . Reporter we have seen him waiting in cautiously on that very question. Yesterday as he finished rolling out the last members of his cabinet, biden was asked about these democratic efforts the push toward impeachment of donald trump and biden made clear that was a decision for congress but he minced no words when it came to his own belief on President Trumps fitness for office. He reminded that as he did throughout the campaign and certainly over the course of the last few days, he believes that trump is an embarrassment, someone who is not fit to serve in office at the same time that list of priorities is still the place he wants to put all of his focus. Listen to how he put it yesterday. Im focused on the virus, vaccine and economic growth. What the congress decides to do is for them to decide. Im going to have and theyll have to be ready to hit the ground running because when kamala and i are sworn in, well be introducing immediately significant pieces of legislation. Were going to do our job and congress can decide how to proceed with theirs. Reporter biden can say that but we know politics doesnt happen in a vacuum. Just because his desire is to focus on getting the coronavirus pandemic in check and getting the economy back on track doesnt mean that democrats are going to stop pushing forward with these efforts. It is remaping clear now that as we see Mitch Mcconnell lay out the senate time line, it could be in the best case scenario, impeachment hearings arent done in the senate until the day before bidens inauguration. Theres a reality in which over the next 11 days or next few weeks once biden is inaugurated, well see pushes from this administration and democrats. Were used to a bar riej of head lieps but consider over the next few weeks we could see a big push for trillions in covid spending from the newly minted white house. Biden will put out what he wants in the stimulus package, thursday, next week. Well see the details then. Well see him start detailing further what vaccine roll out will look like. He said its been a travesty because they have fallen so far behind the metrics for success that were initially laid out and were also going to see this Biden Transition Team over the next few days and weeks start pushing for their cabinet nominees to get on the Senate Calendar for confirmation hearings. Biden is not or likely not to be afforded the same advantage that some of his contemporaries have had in the past where on Inauguration Day President Trumps, president obama had some members of their cabinet confirmed so they could hit the ground running on day one. Biden right now only has one Senate Confirmation on the calendar. Thats for his nominee for the department of defense. He made clear yesterday that he wants to see the senate start putting those days on the calendar so he can be ready once hes inaugurated. You know what im loving about this report is youre getting so specific about what the president wants to do. The organization and the fact that you talk about what were going to hear from the legislative aspect, things he wants to pursue as of thursday, the day after he gets inaugurated. We wont hear well give you the details in a couple of weeks and a couple of weeks the details are not offered to us. Something we got used with this administration. Thank you. Congresswoman, welcome to you. Its good to see you again. Give me what is a more like l scenario. Impeachment or invoking the 25th amendment. I think the issue is what is the quickest way to remove a president who is a clear and present danger to the country. The first thing that should happen is he should resign. If he had an ounce of contact after inciting a riot that killed five people to date. He should resign. The next quickest thing to happen is the cabinet and Vice President could invoke the 25th amendment and they could remove him from office. If neither of those first to things happen which should happen then congress has a tool of impeachment. To that end, your colleagues have been drafting articles of impeachment. Pelosi said they could be introduced as early as monday. Theres one charge, as i understand it. What would be that charge . My understanding is that the charge would be inciting an insurrection. The president whipped up a mob in front of the white house and sent them down to the capitol to disrupt the counting of the Electoral College votes. It doesnt get to be a clearer high crime and misdemeanor than disrupting a constitutional process that confirms he will no longer be the president. Unless youre a republican supporter of this president. His defenders say, look, theres no evidence he intended the vie rens violence or the deaths. Should that be a consideration for democrats . Not if youre operating off facts supposed to just saying wildly and probably and untrue things. Of course he whipped up the crowd. He told them to go fight. He invited them to d. C. On january 6th to have a wild protest. I dont think you get a clearer case. Yeah, i think theres a lot of people that agree with you. I was merely posing the question. That said, how do you respond to republicans who say we look at the Senate Calendar right now and thats what makes it impossible to impeach donald trump. Should they be allowed to let the clock run out . Certainly, i dont think so. As i said before, i think we should move to do this in the quickest possible way. We would hope that members of the senate that have the president s ear if that will any who he is listening to at this point that that are talking to him and telling him its over. You need to go. What about republican colleagues in terms of what you might be hearing from them. Do you think the president has a lir lienated enough of them to be successful in impeachment . I hope he has. If they are like me, they spent most of wednesday on lockdown or in secure locations because of the mob the president sent to take the capitol. If they have any sense of history, any sense of their duty under the constitution, they should be on board. What was that like for you in lockdown . This is the first time ive had to do a lockdown. It wasnt comfortable. It was scary at times but i didnt have the same experience that many of my colleagues that did who were in the capitol and c confronted with the armed insurrectionists. I was fortunate in that way. Throughout the day we could hear Law Enforcement detonating explosions around the capitol because of the pipe bombs and other explosives that had been brought by this crew. Then it became a matter of wanting to get back on the floor and finish the job we were there to do which was to count the Electoral College ballots all of which had been duly certified by all of the states. Something so remarkable. This something we barely even mention in the media every four years. Its a mundane procedural event. This week it was anything but. Let me ask you about twitter. It has taken away trumps access. They said a secondary attack was planned for january 17th. Its concern about Inauguration Day. What do you make of all that . Its a continuation of what trump has done since he entered the political sphere. He is used twitter to lie to people, to stir them up, to play upon their fears so i think it is a concern about what hes going to do going forward. You just play the clip from don junior seauing our First Amendment rights are being viola violated. The First Amendment has always had limitations. You cant yell fire in a crowded theater. Your First Amendment right, you dont have the right to say anything you want and if you are the leader of the United States of america, you have a responsibility not to say whatever pops into your head. You have to lead the nation and you cant mislead the nation. Thats what we have seen here. We have seen a president who has slowly kind of inoculated people to the truth and then has mislead a substantial number of people. I dont doubt there were many people in that crowd, that mob that stormed the capitol who thought they were doing the right thing because thats what they have been told repeatedly. That is not the right thing. Thats not how our government works. If you disagree with someone or their policies, you run for office. Thats what i did. Thats what a lot of my colleagues did. If you dont like the law, you change the law. You dont rip down our government you dont just rip down the government. You dont rip down the signs in the capitol. You dont storm the capitol. You dont disrupt the election of the next president. There you have it. Perfectly said. Thank you so much. You have heard about the double standard of black lives matter arrests versus those at the capitol on wednesday. Theres a new graphic well show you. A new graphic well show you. I may not be able to tell time, but i know what time it is. [whispering] its Grilled Cheese oclock. phone ringing es offers big button, lized phones. And volumeenhanced phones. Nes. Police announcing new charges against the suspect in the storms of the capitol. Some of whom have been identified through social kbleed. A associate professor at Howard University and president ial historian and president and ceo of the lbj foundation. Good to have you back. What comes to mind when you think about investigators who are trying to arrest some of these suspects after the fact . I think im frustrated tremendously by it. I live in washington, d. C. And heard the chattering about this coming way before it got here. I think anybody who has been paying attention knew this was happening. They are looking for these people after the fact is absolutely unacceptable. It never should have gotten to the point where anybody was about to breach our capitol this way. I hope the individuals are brought to justice in the same way folks who have done far less are forced to engage with the criminal justice system. Mark, you have been pretty outspoken about all of this. Here is a look at the numbers of arrests that have been made by d. C. Police during the protest. Those after George Floyds death, lets compare it to the arrest at the capitol on wednesday. The disproportion is stunning. How will history look back on this . As one of the saddest episodes in the course of our history. I think Franklin Roosevelt said about the bombings on pearl harbor on december 7th, 1941 it was a day which will live in infamy. We had the assassination of john k. Kennedy. We had the attacks on washington and new york on 9 11 2001. Which will be a day that will live in infanmy. Not only because bar bar yabari storm the capitol but because it was incited by the president of the United States. Thats so striking. I cant imagine that history will be able to look at that as anything but one of the most unfortunate chapters in the course of our history. You make up a good point because the last time this happened in 1814 as a result of the war of 1812 but it was british troops doing this. This is americans that are doing this. Lets take a look at what it looked like inside the chamber. There were people just milling around. They are ransacking desks. What do you think accounts for their confident demeanor. They dont steeem to be concern about Law Enforcement. It looks like what they were doing is normal. They are just hanging around. I think the short answer is whiteness. I walked down the street near the capitol and saw the National Guard and felt worried. As a black person in this nation i feel a sense of worry that things might not go well. I think they understood very clearly they had been sent by the president of the United States. They might have some sympathizers in the Police Departments that were supposed to be thinking about these kinds of things. They knew their white skin would protect them from any violence that might come their way. They knew they would be helped down steps and doors open for them. I think they have a good reason to believe that. Everything about this nations history suggest they would be as safe as they were. Mark, i want to show our viewers and you join us as we look at a video of reverend warnock. He just won his snaenate race i georgia. This was july 2017. Hes singing and chanting with a clergy group in the capitol rotunda. Then he gets led away. Hes handcuffed. Can anyone account for this contrast . This is the sin of america. This is the birth defect of america. Theres always been a disparity in terms of how we treat race in this country and our most sacred ideals. I think we saw after the murder of george floyd many people, for the first time, understanding that there is Racial Equity in our country. It took that much, the murder of an innocent man to get people to accept that reality but we have to continue to work toward ways to bridge that disparity to reconcile this notion of racial enequitiy inequitity in this country. Im going to ask how that happens. Activists have shouted this from the roof tops. It happened all summer long. You have generations of africanamericans. They have been highlighting inequality for more than a hundred years many this country. What has to happen this year to address this . I think in the immediate term we need political leaders who demonstrate there are consequences for this kind of action. I dont think it makes sense we have to wait for an impeachment. The congress should be able to act immediately. I think the bigger answer is this work of white people. Like you said, black people have been talking about this for centuries even before we had our freedom in this nation. White people will have to talk to each other to help each other understand how this works and why its wrong. I dont think my voice works to get that message across. I dont know what needs to happen or what happens in the socialization of folks to make them get to this place. I think this is something that a White Community will have to investigate within itself. What is the way forward in your mind . Who has the real power to make change . What are people going to be prepared to give up in order for that change to happen . I think one of the important things is that we have lost sight of who we are as a country. We dont teach basic civics in our country anymore. People dont understand what it is to be an american. Most americans, less than 40 of americans can name the three branches of government. The prepond rans of americans have never read the constitution. Many people who stormed the capitol were getting the definition of what it is to be american from donald trump who is perhaps known as the first antiamerican president as striking as that sounds. We need to teach our citizens what it is to be an american. What the basic principles of our nation are and rally our citizens around common ideals and a sense of common purpose. I think thats one of the ways forward after this tragedy. I suggest both of you offer classes on that and we sign everybody up. Its good to see you. Thank you so much. Happy new year to you both. A search is under way just off the coast of indonesia after a jet liner lost contact. Rescuer found what could be debris. Whats the latest on the search efforts . What do we know about what happened . Reporter we dont really know much. I was speaking with the aviation expert. He said its too early to tell. Everybody wants to know what went wrong. They havent verified fully that the plane has crashed. They have been pulling debris out of the oceans. Right now the official term would be its disappeared but it seems the worst is true. Thats 62 people were killed, including ten children. What happened, i spoke with this aviation expert and he had some interesting insights. This plane was only about four minutes into its flight flying out of jakarta and it plummeted and went down very, very quickly. About tens of thousands of feet in a minute. What was interesting was that basically it was still communicating with jakarta as it was going down. It was communicating and sending signals right until the point it reached the surface of the water. What we know is the plane was intact for almost the entire dissent. That means investigators will be looking at things like that. Whether or not there was an explosion that might have prevented it from communicating. It looks as though the plane was intact for the entire dissent. That rules out a couple of Different Things like a mid air explosion. Anything is possible in these cases. Its never clear what happened until days, weeks, years later when they find the wreckage. This is the latest in real string of tragedies for ind n d indonesia. This was not the boeing 737 max that was grounded for about two years. This is a real problem for indonesia. This is the fifth major accident in just the past seven years. Major plane crash. Hundreds of people have died and investigations into that 737 max really showed a lot of problems with Safety Systems in indonesia and this incident, this horrific crash, if it turned out to be crash, will really draw a lot more scrutiny and the culture among aviation authorities in indonesia. Im going to presume you dont have the sense of the tenor of the communication as the plane was plummeting. One can imagine it was terrifying but you can also think that pilots may in the case of not being an explosion which makes sense given your discussion here. You have no sense of what that all sounded like . When i say communicating and connecting, i mean the data was being mostly sent. We havent anythiheard anything. Planes are constantly sending data back and forth to flight towers. Thats more about the actual data. Thats what was in tact. Thats a clue. The pilots could have be incapacitated in some way. Or they could have downed the flight themselves. Thats something that is also being considered. The fact there wasnt presumed not to be a midair explosion. Its possible. It could have be a pilot suicide or Something Like that. A lot of possibilities. Thank you for being on the case for us. In the waning days of the trump administration, House Speaker is calling on the military chief to prevent the president from accessing Nuclear Codes saying hes unhinged. Good to see you, sir. Thank you for joining me again. I do want to get your reaction to what you saw from the rioters and the thoughts that went through your miepd as they were storming the capitol. I watched it all and it was a very sad day in our history. One we have preached around the world to democracies to ensure peaceful transfer of power and it was a major negotiating point as our ambassadors around the world that represent us in democracies that were struggling to have a peaceful transfer of power. Guess what now, were part of that club. We can no longer preach to them because we have experienced this. This good news is on the 20th of january, we will have peaceful transfer of power. Its a sad day and it will be a historical day in the history of our country, and i hope we take pause and figure out why did this happen. We saw how it happened. Why did it happen . What has caused so many of our citizens to revert back to actions like in 1874 when the white league doing reconstruction in new orleans attacked the reconstruction government which many were africanamericans and took to city new orleans killing many members of that government. The metropolitans. Its happened before. We never thought it would happen here in modern history with the civil war in our rear view mirror. It was a sad day. It was indeed. Let me ask you, sir, back to Nancy Pelosis concern. How likely is it for the chairman of the joints chief to revoke the president s nuclear privileges . What all would go into that . I think it might be a little more to that story than i can see her having conversations. Having been the doctrine of how we use the weapons and having served on the joints chief of staff, i would say this. We have two kind of deployments that the public can read. We have a reactive strike meaning we took a hit and were going to make a decision to strike back. Thats a very deliberative process. We dont have to worry about a responsive strike. General, let me ask you about something. He took to twitter to say if people think just shy of two weeks is a short amount of time for the u. S. To be rudder less with a cornered angry leader, they should consider some adversaries, enemies, will see this as weakness. A national wound and want to press on it. Do you share this . I think its some people that can think that way. You have to understand the National Military command authority is still intact. The other type come kind of preemptive strike would have to two through deliberative planning and deliberative action through chain of command. Theres no one person control of the nuclear weapons. I can understand the speakers concern but American People ought to sleep well. Theres multiple layers between two people standing there opening the code and shooting a nuke off. Theres multiple things thats got to happen and i dont worry about that between now and the 20th of january. We ought to rest easy over that. Shoot nuke her weapons is totally different. Sgr im going to let that be the last word because that does have few peek rest easy. God bless america. Big tech versus trump. Twitter permanently banning his account. Facebook, instagram, snap chat shutting down his accounts at least until Inauguration Day. Google has removed parler from its app store. Apple will do the same thing. This is a huge deal, scott. What are the effects well see from this . Reporter you know, its interesting. It is a huge deal. You think about it. This for the better part of the last decade has been the center of the social media universe, the headquarters of twitter and now well see if that center shifts. Remember, President Trump had 88 million followers on twitter. 88 million. Those that try and log on today will find none of his bombastic tweets but saying this account is no longer available. Twitter had briefly reinstated the president after the events on wednesday but after he tweeted that his followers would not be silenced and said he would not be there on Inauguration Day, that was taken as yet another potential incitement and twitter released its statement saying after close review of recent view of donald trump account and context around them, specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off twitter, we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence. What followed is this whackamole keeping the president off the varieous accounts he might have used. Some experts say shutting down President Trump really only scratches the surface. You cant just look only at the actions taken against the president s accounts because when a protest happens of this magnitude, it requires an incredible amount of organization. If you look across these platforms the way in which they were coordinating not just messaging but ride shares and where to be, when to be, how to be in certain places, all of this was animated on top of a lie. On top of this disinformation campaign. Reporter which has led to all of the questions about these alternatives to twitter like parler which bills itself as a free speech alternative. The google store has shut down that app. Its Still Available on the Apple App Store but apple has warned parler about more controls on its site. Then theres the app or the social media outlet called gab which claims that it is gaining 10,000 new users per hour. Nbc unable to verify that. Clearly there is some appetite for this kind of speech. The question is, what you do about it and really another part of Donald Trumps legacy is all these questions now about the role of social media in american life. Scott, we know we said he didnt think he would have gotten elected without it. Thank you for that. Im going to pick up on this topic. You have been calling for the social media platforms to ban trump. Kwha whats your reaction and how will he retaliateretaliate . I thought he should stay on the platforms as long as he followed the rules. Anyone who follows the rules should be able to stay on. I think thats not a problem. He breek them a lot of times and they started labeling them. Then he went a step too far by inciting violence. Thats a no no on all these plats forms. He deserved the permanent ban he got. I didnt think it had to happen that way. I just assumed it would because he has no selfcontrol. You heard scott talking about this. Youre aware that google, apple has told parler, step up your policing and you can stay in the app stores. You say they saw the mob coming on wednesday. You spoke with the parler ceo. He denies any responsibility for the capitol mob. Is this where trump and antidemocratic messaging will end up going and festering . They arent going to go to parlerks r because a lot of the mainstream sites. They can do whatever they want in a lot of ways but a lot of the mainstream companies dont want to be affiliated with violence in the capitol. Its not a good time, fun times. It was huge destruction and death. They dont want to host things like parler that allow it. I think thats a perfectly reasonable thing. The way conservative media is sensorship. Its not. You break rules and thats it. Your not forced to do business with anyone you dont want to. Theyre kind of calling for socialism like take over sites which is unusual to do. It reminds me theres a thing going around twitter. Remember the gay wedding cake. They were on that side. Well, twitter doesnt want to make a terrorism cake. It shouldnt have to. Its pretty basic. This is not about censorship. These are not public squares. They are private companies. They are private money making companies and they dont want to be affiliated with terrorists. Thats the end of it or white iss supremacy. You can start a new platform. You can start whatever you want and make any rules you want but if you want to rely on the mainstream companies, you dont have to, you need to behave with the rules they have. They are very clear on violence, for sure. This was violence. Everybody mentioned the president attributed a lot of his success in getting elected to the sites. In 2017 he said without the tweets, i wouldnt be here. I have over 100 million followers between facebook, twitter and instagram. Over 100 million. I dont have to go to fake media. Are these platforms too big. Are they too powerful . I think you have to separate. They are too powerful in they have markets that they control by themselves. Thats very different from what they are doing here. He has alternatives and he used twitter in an unfettered way for almost four years. Theyve been using it as much as they want. The companies gave them a huge pass. They just recently started labeling it. Hes just continued to gain them. I wrote a piece about this. He continued to game them the same way alex joennes did. The same way a lot of people got kicked off. He thought he could do whatever he wanted and he cannot. He should not be able to do whatever he wanted. He can say any dumb tweet he wants to but he cant incite violence. I dont know why this is so complex for people. Its really simple. If he had gone to floor of the house of representatives and screamed this stuff, it would have been a problem. If he had done it out in the street, it would have been a problem. Hes facing legal jeopardy from the speech he gave on the mall. Okay. Consequences of the speech are something we should be talking about. Speaking of congress, how does congress begin to tame big tech . Theres ban lot of spotlight this week on it. Back and forth throughout these last four years. How many times have you seen the leaders get up on a capitol hill and have to testify. How does congress begin to tame big tech . I talked about this a lot. Its my big thing. They have to have some regulation. This is an industry that never had regulation. Im more interested in their market power. You cannot start a social network because they are so big. You dont start a commerce. This is the issue. Can amazon be in a marketplace and own marketplace and sell on that marketplace . Can apple have the app store and then have full control of the app store. Something like that can probably be figured out by basic regulation. Other things like google with 90 some percent of the market should they have 90 of the search market. This is stuff we have dealt with in the past where it was at t or way back when the Oil Companies or theaters. This is manager were familiar familiar with. The issue i have is they try to use this in a political way when we have to have smart legislation and smart reform of various things. Thats what we need focus on a bigroup of people that get together and figure out just like there was big at t. Just like there was big oil. Just like there was big theaters. How do we deal with these things. That requires bipartisan discussion and pulling it out of the political spectrum because this is just about power and its just about companies that have too much market share. Thats very different than whats going on right now. Right now President Trump broke the rules one too many times and thai thai theyve had. When did they have it . When president elect biden was about to take office. They knew they had to clean up their house before the cops got there. I dont know. Suddenly when theres possible pressure on them in way that might not be be so great to the bottom line. Cara swisher. So good to talk with you. Thank you so much for your time. Thank you. All strength, no sweat so we know the president could face impeachment for his role in the attack on capitol hill. He would be first sitting president to be impeached twice during a single term. Joining me now is sarah chef, and congressional reporter for politico and author of the huddle newsletter. Good to see you both. What are you hearing about where the House Democrats are with the impeachment process and with less than two weeks, rather, until the end of trumps term, the big question is is there enough time on the calendar . Theyre really moving full speed ahead because nancy pelosi and the House Democrats gave an ultimatum. Either you resign or they invoke the 25th amendment and have him removed from power or we will pursue impeachment. Trump has shown no willingness to resign which is not surprising because he has not taken responsibility for his actions not once since he took office or before that. We know that they are likely not going to invoke the 25th amendment because as my colleague tom bianco reported this week, pence has no appetite for that and invoking the 25th amendment means the Vice President would have to be onboard which we dont think that will happen. And the house will impeach trump which it looks like will happen next week that will charge imwith incitement of insurrection. The house impeaches trump and next is the senate trial. Based on the memo that Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell circulated last night, he said the trial would not start until at the very earliest an hour after joe biden is inaugurated and at that point thats one day before. Is there a sense, olivia, on capitol hill that republicans would really get behind this . Well, as were starting to see some of these republicans coming out of the woodwork. We saw ben sasse saying hes entertaining the idea. Lisa murkowski wants trump out of office and if he is not out of office she may reconsider her Party Alignment and ive been speaking with republicans and what you are hearing is sheer rage. One of the quotes i heard from a house staffer who has been a trump supporter from day one says im burning my maga hat. They are upset and i am even hearing that they are, some republican staffers are threatening to quit their job if their boss, if their republican does not support impeachment, and im also hearing that some have even quit their positions. I know of at least two house staffers who have quit their positions because of how their boss voted with the objections on wednesday about the election certification. So you are really kind of seeing the entire capitol hill having this awakening moment and republicans, while they might not be saying publicly where they are, we are looking at a few maybe moderate republicans who might be joining and adam has said that he supports it. Thats one factor, but the other is a lot of republicans i talk to say trumps leaving soon. You might as well wait until he leaves. If you think about the nuance of that statement theyre not saying hes not a threat and he shouldnt be kicked out of office. Theyre just saying the clock is ticking. So hell be out of here soon enough and just let it go so you can start to heal. Let me ask you, quickly before i run out of time about the relationship between donald trump and mike pence because you wrote about this saying that mike pence is, in fact, furious with the president. How so . Why . I mean, we saw that on wednesday, right . Hes furious where he unleashed his mob where everyone convened to this electoral vote and a lot of them were shouting to hang mike pence. They were talking about hanging him from a capitol hill tree. After everything that mike pence has done for the president over the last four years, he has been one of his most loyal allies. That was jarring for him and that really seems to have brought him to the breaking point here. Yeah. I can imagine. Ladies, thank you so much. Good to see you. That will be it for me.
