Jordan had offered up to exchange for that jordanian pilot. She is known as a convicted wouldbe suicide bomber who was part of a series of bombings that took place back in 2005. Hers did not detonate so the jordanian authorities arrested her. Shes been on death row since 2006. Jordan offered to release her in exchange for that pilot after the news was that he had executed. The jordanian authorities have now confirmed that they have executed her. In addition to her, the jordanian government confirmed that they have executed another individual who is believed to have been a right hand man of a a in iraq. Who is one of the most notorious figures of the iraqi war and who was killed in a usair strike. He was believed to have been a senior operative and he had been on death row for some time. The fact that the jordanian government has confirmed that its gone ahead with these two individuals. Although they dont officially say it, it is widely believed it has been in response to the execution of the jordanian pilot that was confirmed later today lawrence. And ayman, its so striking that all of this is happening on a day when Jordans King Abdullah met in the oval office with president obama. Does that trip to washington have anything to do do you think, with the Islamic States timing on releasing this video today . Well, theres no doubt that the Islamic State in the past has been very sharp with its messaging and its propaganda value has been a key objective of the organization whenever its made its statements in the past. I would be very comfortable in saying that they were probably aware the jordanian king was in jordan was in the United States scheduled to meet with the profile meetings and that was not lost on them in trying to get maximum attention for their actions today. Jordanian officials believe the execution of the pilot happened some time ago, as far back as early january. The timing of releasing the execution of this pilots video speaks for itself given the fact that the king was already in the United States today. And another point to keep in mind the problem began da video that was released around the execution showed a lot of previous meetings that the joe danan king had with president obama. It showed it had several news clips of the two meeting. It showed images of the Jordanian Armed forces working alongside with u. S. Armed force toes try and illustrate that strong relth between the two. There is no doubt that jordanian government feeling the pressure on the streets given the anger that has been directed towards isis for the execution of this pilot swiftly in response to that execution by carrying out its own set of executions. So the timing as you say, is vastly not lost on both parties. One, isis carrying out that execution on the day the jordanian king was in the United States. And two, the jordanian government acting twistly with its own execution as people have been taking to the streets demanding swift action. Were joined now by phone with laithe. What is your reaction to jordans Swift Response to the discovery that their pilot had been burnt to death . As you said it lawrence it was a swift reaction. I think the jordanian government carried out what it promised which is if the jordanian pilot was not returned that others would be executed. Its not only just a response to the killing of the jordanian pilot, but i think the jordanian government needed to make a point to the International Community that it is still committed to the war on terror, it is still committed to being an ally of the United States to combat this cancer in the region. And the youve studied the Islamic States methods, especially their Public Relations methods, their need to get a certain kind of attention. Much has been said today about this change in methodology from be heading to now burning to death and the very elaborate, highly produced video that recorded that horrible burning to death today. What do you make of this change of technique and even the enhanced production values in this video . You know indeed. The video had a high production value. But i think the point of alive was this the message from the video that just as we are caged in syria and iraq being bombarded by your bombs of rocket and fire we are going to do the same with the best of our capability. Its a symbolic retaliation against the jor dayan involvement in this u. S. Led Coalition Targeting the Islamic State. It was nearly symbolic to confirm that beheading will not just work it is no longer effective for terror purposes. This is a clear message that the Islamic State knot backing off and its also that its putting the arab armys part of this coalition in the same bracket as what they call the crusader armys. And what do you expect to be the reaction in jordan among the people of jordan . The reaction, for the most part has been in support of the family of the pilot. They have gone through the streets and said we support his sacrifice against this terror group. However, there has been a slight negative backlash against the jordanian government because some people believe the jordanian government did not do enough to negotiate this release. So there has been a mixed reaction. They believe that isis is not only a cancer in the region but its getting really close to home. We have images on our screen now of people in Jordan Holding up pictures of the pilot and that is of course, earlier today because of the time zone differences. But clearly, at that stage in that particular demonstration, that was very supportive of the pilot. What do you expect now to be the Islamic States reaction to what has happened with these two executions . You know at the end of the video they put out today, they had a list of a few dozen Jordanian Air force officers. They put it on a hit list essentially, and they called out essentially for operatives in jordan to take revenge against every single air force pilot. They put their name they put their location they put their addresses, they put their ranks and they offered a hundred gold denars for every personal who would kill one pilot. So clearly, the Islamic State is capitalizing on this action and is calling for more. In and how much how many assets does the Islamic State have in jordan . Obviously, it is very difficult to ascertain. But throughout the last four years of the syrian conflict and through the last couple of years, Islamic State operating in syria, it has attracted many jordanians to come across the border and join ranks. A number of radical have demonstrated not only their pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State leader, but they have demonstrated the resentment against the jordanian government. The fear would be if these operatives or these radical individuals would act now and would start operating in part of jordan. Thanks for joining us. Well be right back. Built for business. Were back with more live coverage of the situation in jordan tonight. Were joined now by shane harris of the daily beast joined by phone. Shane, what do we know about the jordanian pilot who we now now today was executed some weeks ago . Well were hearing tonight that he probably was killed possibly as early as january 3rd. Maybe around the 8th of this month, as well. There have been reports coming out both from intelligence and National Security sources that we have as well as people who were on the ground and that were tweeting around january 8th that isis was bragging about having killed a jordanian pilot and, in fact, having burned him alive. Were finding out that he may, in fact, have been dead for quite some time before this video was put on the internet today. And the methodology, as weve been talking about today new for the Islamic State, burning to death, what is the most reasonable interpretation of why they changed this notology . One interpret is that in the muslim faith, burning the body is it is not the way to dispose of the dead. The dead have to be buried. By burning him, it is possible that they were trying to send a message that he was not going to be given a proper burial. That is one interpretation. The other, frankly, is that given the be heading videos have captured a lot of attention, perhaps isis felt that it was time to change the game and do something even more dramatic and more horrific. After having seen a lot of these videos this one was quite more ghastly than the previous ones that weve seen and quite more vivid, as well. So if they were trying to shock people more than they had in the past, they may have deeded. And majority kwan was ready, apparently to make a deal make a Prisoner Exchange for their pilot and it of course didnt happen because as it happens he was already dead. But that means that the jordanian people were primed for the possibility of this exchange and the pilot coming home safely. What do you imagine are the variety of reactions we can expect among the jordanian people to this . I think theres always been tremendous upset over his capture. There were protests in aman that were allowed to continue by the authorities there, which is quite unusual. The big question is at what point did the jordanians know he was, in fact dead and if they did know this why were they offering to engage in some sort of issue . Its possible we should add, too, that they had suspicions that he was dead but no absolute confirmation. This is one reason that they wanted to say a proof of life video. But obviously, this has been a huge issue in jordan which is facing its own internal security challenges and where the campaign against isis is quite unpopular. Jordanian officials told me this is going toe strengthen their resolve. They did not want to back down. Well see whether that is true. Its important to note that they did not stop participating in air strikes with the u. S. Even after the pilot was captured. Shane harris thank you very much for joining us tonight. We will be right back. Were back with our breaking news in jordan. Were joined by chris jansing. Chris, is there any word yet on the white houses reaction to the two executions that occurred in jordan tonight, apparently in retribution for the execution of the jordanian pilot . Good evening, lawrence. I was with some Administration Officials tonight, came back, turned on your show and saw the banner. I had only been watching it a few minutes so i dont have any direct reaction. I can tell you, though that this something that had been anticipated. Jordans president , as you know said immediately after this happened that they would pay a price. And a lot of what the world was watching and certainly the Coalition Partners were watching was what effect would this have because, of course back in december after the jordanian pilot was captured, the United Arab Emirates stopped participating in air strikes. There has always been a lot of internal politics and many of these countries, as you happen. And to i think this practice is swift retaliation, a message that majority kwan feels much like the president did. The president was having an event this afternoon. Just as he was going into this event, he was at a table surrounded by people that had sent him letters thanking him for their health care cover aemg. He had been briefed on this and briefed on the video itself. It was still in the process of being authenticated at that point. He used some strong words about a bankrupt organization that is bent on destruction. And he told savannah when she did the interview with the super bowl about how he had seen the videos and it had strengthened his resolve. I can tell you that is the feeling at the white house, that they believe it will strengthen the coalition, which is not to say that they arent aware of the fragility in some ways that this kind of brew tilt potentially brings. Chris, do you have any indication from the white house of the president revealing that he has seen some of these execution videos by the Islamic State . Was it a planned revelation or is that something that just slipped out . Because one wonders if that isnt something that would then please the Islamic State to know that their work has made et directly to the president s eyes . Yeah. I think this is something that members of the administration knew that he had seen them and he had indicated that he was being briefed. And as all of these were in progress, it wasnt a matter of him seeing one, it was several. But i think it was a statement to him of potentially maybe defiance is too strok a word. I dont want to imply that im speaking for what the president s motivation was. But he was clearly sending a message. That going into the oval office and the brief time that we were in there with the president and King Abdullah, how somber the move was and how determined and how quickly in the afternoon the president s mood which you know, he was hosting these americans for whom it was a big thrill to have their that president to be invited in the roosevelt room. And when i say able to ask him that one question at the end of what we lets listen to what the president but he quickly changed from being very somber and i think that revelation was not something that was done lightly and it was clearly meant to sent a message. Lets listen to what the president had to say today. Should in fact this video be authentic, its one more indication of the viciousness and bar barety of this organization. And it i think, will redouble the vigilance and determination on the part of a Global Coalition to make sure that they are degraded and ultimately defeated. And it also just indicates the degree to which whatever ideology theyre operating off of, its bankrupt. Were here to talk about how to make people healthier and make their lives better. And this organization appears only interested in death and destruction. Were joined now by phone by nbc news Andrea Mitchell. Andrea weve been waiting today, since weve discovered that the jordanian pilot had been executed for what would be the jordanian response on the ground. We now seem to have it. I think its very clear that jordan is first of all, experiencing the horror the shock. There has been support for the king and for the royal family and this is something that would be very very important in that society. This is a prominent family. The government had agreed to make the trade of the very well known host aemg the woman who was the attempted suicide bomber and that was something demanded and expected by the head of the family the father of the pilot. This is a very important tribe in jordan society. And the fact that the king flew back, he clearly informed the president at 6 15 when they met this evening and flew back cutting short his trip. And basically signaled that they were not going to roll over, that they were not going to back off the coalition against isis. This is an existential moment for jordan. Jordan now has 8el 00,000 refugees from the syrian civil war. They were today signing a memorandum of clarity to help them sustain this refugee crisis, which is a number of refugees are 21 pes of their total population now. Their country is being overwhelmed and the fact that this brutality, you know none of these executions have been easy to take, but this one, so far, exceeded the beheadings even. It seemed as though isis was outdoing itself for shock value. And that i think, has gotten exactly the contrary reaction. I think King Abdullah having consulted with the Foreign Relations and appropriation committees and the committee on the house side and the white house, having met with the Vice President and secretary kerry today flew home feeling empowered to face down this crisis. And andrew ya with the difficult possible interpretations of whats occurred here in majority kwan will there be any dmeft can strains for him . For example, agreeing to the trade of prisoners which can be seen as something of weakness b and then having come to that willingness to make that kind of agreement, it turns out that negotiation was going on in a completely fraudulent way by the other side because they had killed the pilot weeks ago. I think, in fact that tlengtens the king. It can be interpreted both ways. It would be difficult to predict from over here exactly how its going to play out. I dont feel entirely comfortable making that judgment because im not on the ground and im not talking to people there. But i was talked to a lot of auto people in the region and jordanians here as well as others from the immediate neighborhood who have been in and out of washington. Ive covered it for many years and i know the king and his colleagues. And the foreign minister. And the fact is they likely having very good intelligence source webs they very well may have known that this jordanian pilot was killed shortly after his capture and killed in this brutal fashion. Its the judgment of some of our experts throughout all this that the complexity of this 22 minute 34 second video, graphic, could not have been done in recent days could not have been done quickly. And that he was killed and killed in this fashion and the video was created to break the coalition, to say to the others whether its the saudis or the moroccans or others who are less vulnerable, to back down and not take on isis and not send more pilots into the air. Let the americans do it. And, you know, i think that this very well may have been a negotiation where they knew the pilot was dead and now its on isis that shows their brutality and that they were acting in bad faith all along. So it basically puts King Abdullah in the position of saying, i did everything i could to get that pilot back but look who i was dealing with. Exactly. And ive heard experts say and i dont pretend to be an expert on this that the burning of the body was particularly offensive and that was just another step in isis. Potentially infuriating. I think in particular the jordanians now, perhaps to those who are going to in their sick minds are going to be inspired by a video somewhere in the west to other potential followers, this could be successful tactic. But in jordan this is a very prominent family a highly respected pilot, a young man recently married. I think the Jordanian National identify was very tied up in him and that this is back fire. Andrew ya do we have indications that the Islamic State knew who this pilot was in Jordanian Society . Absolutely. Completely sophisticated and wired. Im so struck by the stories, the New York Times was the first to report it today, the sophistication of the underground railroad by which they extricated the woman, the coconspirator and partner of the attacker on the kosher super market in paris, the way they got her across the border she had motorcades bodyguards, it was a complete operation. Andrea were going to have to break it there. Andrea mitchell thank you very much for joining us. Were now going live to our other breaking news story, the train accident here on metro new york. Six people dead. As it was approaching a crossing, immediately at this location it came upon a car that was on the crossing. It struck that car, pushed it about 400 feet down the track. The car remained in front of the train. It was a fire and explosions and Emergency Service personnel responded. And got injured people off the train. Some people selfevacuated and thats where we stand right now. In terms of service for the morning, reporting together a service plan for people who ride the harlem line to the extent that they can get down to white plains and catch the service there, thats what they should do. If theyre underneath of brewster, were going to have buses take them over to beacon on the hudson line. South of that point, were going to bring trains down to i believe pleasantville and bus them down to white plains. Governor. Thank you. As you heard from mr. Prendergast, what we know what appears to have happened now,s theres going to be investigations that follow up that determine all the facts, but what appears to have happened is a car was stopped on the tracks. It was hit by the train and the resulting fire an explosion of hitting the car consumed the car, the vehicle, and then the fist car of the train itself. At this time we believe the driver of the car has perished as well as six people in the train itself. Again, this is all preliminary information. Well be followup investigations as to exactly what happened. But as far as the available eyewitnesss and what can be put together tonight thats what the situation looks to be. Most importantly, you have seven people who started out today to go about their business and arent going to be making it home tonight. And its a painful reminder to all of us how precious life is and sometimes how random it can be. This is a truly ugly and brutal site. The track, the third rail of the track came up from the explosion and went right through the car. So it is truly a devastatingly ugly situation to see. I want to thank all the First Responders who were onsite on the very difficult circumstances and are doing a phenomenal job to do everything that they can. Other than that any questions for myself or mr. Prendergast . Governor cuomo, theres a witness who say claiming that he was right behind the car that was hit and the gates behalf malfunctioned. Any information about that . We have not heard that. All we know is from eyewitnesss, etcetera and the best facts we have is that a car was stopped on the tracks with the gates down and was then hit by the car. But there will be records. These are electronic devices. So when people actually go through the facts, well know exactly what happens. [ inaudible question ]. Louder please. No, we didnt no, the locomotive engineer was engined and was taken to the hospital to treat his injuries. Hes not one of the casualties. How many injured at this point . Dont know. Dont know that number. The train normally leaves with 165 people on it. Thats the count usually. I believe the maximum allowable speed is 60 Miles Per Hour here so that could be the spooe speed he was going at. But there is an event recorder on the train. Part of the investigation is to make sure they gather all those facts and ascertain them before we come to any firm conclusions. When you look at the damage done and the damage by the fire its actually amazing that not more people were hurt on that train. Did the third rail somehow get into ta car . The third rail entered the floor of the car and theres sections of the third rail in the first car. The third rail stopped at the grate crossing and thats where the contact with the automobile was made. It entered through the automobile and up through the floor of the car. Thank you. Thank you. That was Governor Andrew Cuomo explaining what happened on the metro north train crash north of new york city about an hour north of new york city. That is the second busiest rail line in the United States, the Long Island Railroad being the busiest. The normal passenger load on that train, about 655 passengers. We have confirmed that six of them tonight are dead. Hey matt, whats up . Im just looking over the company bills. Is that what we pay for internet . Yup. Dsl is about 90 bucks a month. Thats funny, for that price with comcast business, i think you get like 50 megabits. Wow, thats fast. Personally, i prefer a slow internet. Built for business. We are back with more breaking News Coverage of our live events tonight, both the train crash in update new york and the situation in jordan. Were joined again by phone by steve clemens. Steve, the reaction in jordan to the execution of the two prisoners that jordan was ready to hands over in exchange for the jordanian pilot who had been captured by the Islamic State. We are seeing some video of that reaction in the street. It seems supportive both of the pilot and King Abdullah. What is your read of the plexties of this reaction to the situation in majority jan . The situation inside jordan as youve described it was complex and tense for the government because there was a lot of criticism that the government was not doing enough to move forward with the exchange of rishawi for this pilot. And that he that there grew a lot of antipathy inside jordan about what the costs of allying with the United States and others against isolate were. That jordan has absorbed into its country many of the refugees from syria and iraq over the years and received very well on a relative basis aid from the rest of the world, at least not on par with the burden that jordan has been carrying and those stress signs were is showing. So there was a fear in washington talked about as just yesterday in meetings that i was participating in that if this pilot have been alive, if he had been executed, had they not made the trade, this might have exploded inside jordan might have become a particularly destabilizing factor for the government and the king and might have resulted in jordan withdrawing from the antiisis coalition. Now what you see is unfolding is exactly the opposite of that and i believe i agree with Andrea Mitchell that while with he a lot to see how it unfold this appears to have strengthen the king and i think its very important that he and the government showed immediate resolve in these executions and showing they will meet isis where they are. And that they will confront isis as harshly as isis has been confirming the other way. It could have very easily gone the other direction. So this is very important, what youre seeing in the streets today, because i have to tell you, washington, policy measures at the top levels of government were very very worried that jordan would have to accept back. Steve, was there any feelings in the jordanian government that they should not negotiate with terrorists over this pilot . I believe that there is, in many cases in all of this a diversity of views. I think that you happen i think that even i said perhaps on your show or one of the other shows that thinking that the pilot was alive, if they had, in fact negotiated, given this woman and acquiesced to isis demands, that it would tighten the market isis would continue to play these games. So i do there were voices to that but they were quiet. Steve, the prominence of this pilots mystery was educating about that a great deal earlier in the hour. Do you think that amplified the response in some way . I think it made him better known. But i think it could have back fired the other direction, too, because hesitate father was very well known, he came from a powerful describe that if the government did this for this pilot because he was well connected, what would the government do for those People Living inside jofrdan that were not well connected . There is always the tension in these societies between, you know, essentially the have and have not challenged. So i think it would be a mistake to think that just because he was from a powerful family that the government might have proceeded with this, that there would not have been a backlash inside jordan to that had they moved in that direction. I imagine King Abdullah has to be concerned with how long lasting and how unifying the reaction on this might prove to be. There could be crowds of a certain size on the street today ask tonight about this but a month from now, two months from now, who is going to be winning the argument about what jordans involvement in supporting u. S. Policies in the region means to jordan . This may be an unfair critique. And i want to be careful. But i think many people have perceived King Abdullah in jordan to be a weak king, a soft king, and smnl who likes to spend more time in washington than jordan. This may be his moment where he rises to the occasion and he begins to demonstrate a kind of resolve and behavior that reminds people of king hue said of jordan who was such a key vital nimble fixture in middle eastern politics. I think this could well be a transition point for the kingdom and i think if the king and his advisers use this moment to rally the world, to recognize that jordan has played this extraordinary role taking in the regions refugees for years, and that its reached a certain breaking point and they could turn that around and at the same time join i think theres an anger, a palpable anger that the qatar foreign minister was in washington yesterday, met john kerry, the two of them released a statement talking about the de delegitimization of isis the fight against isis the efts to defund and cut off the Funding Sources for isis. That only works if every sivenl one of these governments has deep, deep resolve to do this. And i think jordan is a major pillar in this. If jordan can bring that around and the king can look as if hes crafted this new and different and harder jordan than this then he comes out a really different kind of greeter in the region and ascends and i think a very important way that he just hasnt yet. So that is what i think the next two or three months holds. As you asked. And i think, you know its his moment either to lead or i think if he doesnt lead in this then jordan isnt going to have some real problems in the next few months. Steve, in our coverage of the region, the news always seems to be emphasizing how unpopular the United States is in countries in the region outside of israel. But explain to us how the jordanian people how is it that they support the depend of the alliance. Now its a king. The king has to be sensitive to how much support his position has among the people. And so where does how would that support by described by people in the street in majority wran who support the kings position in relation to the United States . I think its a bet. Jordan and king hussein have invested in the education of the people. Fundamentally, the kind of inassistant issues the way the king sort of makes things move is dealing with as in many of these governments, balancing favors to describes, positions to the various tribes and trying to modernize their government and move it forward in a way that the people feel that theyre getting a fair shape from the political system. Jordan has long had a problem and frankly many think a wordening problem in corruption and the question about competent of government. And i think that the king has not made as much head way on those issues as many might like. But when it comes to the partnership and alliance of the United States, i think jordan for a long time in part because it along with egypt has had peace with israel and is unique in the region theyve also been exposed to the modernity of that. Theyve stepped forward and realize that they live in the unique part of the region and israel is a part of that picture and the United States was the sculpture and architect and eventually the security guarantor for that. To the degree that these democracy like of the United States, the much bigger problem is not that its fear throughout the region that the United States is not playing the role that it once used to play in the region and that a void has emerged that groups like isis are filling for iran and its Transnational Networks are filling. Is and that is why there is in many of these countries, less jordan than places like kuwait saudi arabia bahrain and others are in the private sector continuing to send money and to privately support groups like isis because they believe ta these groups are the only check on growing iranian power because the United States is absent and that the United States is only bombing from the air and fully is not the kind of bold, decisive cutting edge party that it used to be. So i would worry less about people not liking the United States than folks in the region doubting americas resolve to be engaged in the region. Steve, thank you very much. Well be right back. They say after seeing a magician make his assistant disappear mr. Clean came up with a product that makes dirt virtually disappear. He called it the magic eraser. It cleans like magic. Were returning now to live breaking news to the train crash on the metro north Commuter Rail line, the second busiest Commuter Rail line in the United States. Six passengers and on that train tonight are now dead. The train crashed into a Jeep Cherokee, which seems to be stuck on the tracks at a crossing. Were joined now from that site by wnbc reporter gus rosendale. Guess, there is some confusion after the governor said there were six passengers that were dead and then he said the driver is dead. Is it clear whether this is now a total of six or a total of seven . The next has fluctuated throughout the evening. The latest from the governor is that the total number is seven. That was from a briefing about a half an hour ago. The governor impressed upon us that this was still very early on in the investigation here. The number of lives lost here sevenlg. The injury number about 12 here. The latest on what we do know around 6 30 here at a crossing the medicine row north train heading north after making one stop collided with a jeep chair rowky. For some reason its unclear why, the cherokee was on the tracks. Our local newspaper said the gates did, in fact, to be working. The female driver of that vehicle, the mta, says that she was out of her vehicle when she was hit and struck instantly. Six other people were killed. We learned a little bit more about the chaos of what happened immediately after. When the train hid that jeep, it hit the third rail as well. Went right through the train car. The governor here is saying despite the tragic loss of life, it is truly amaiding that more people were not killed in all of this. This was a packed commuter train. Hundreds of people on board. Roughly on an average day, 650 people and most of them were able to exit the train safely and without too much chaos. We will be learning more about these details certainly tomorrow and them the investigation will be ongoing to find out exactly how this impact occurred. The governor said the maximum speed for the train in that area was 60 Miles Per Hour been and what youre saying there, what would have prevented the train from if you can tell us seeing that Jeep Cherokee from a distance where it had enough time to close down the brakes from 60 Miles Per Hour . We had talked earlier in the evening about visibility. Ive been going through some of the maps here. I tell and it did appear that right before this collection this was not a bend. So if the came cost 600,000 and then all of a sudden it stopped, the engineer would have had only a minute or so to apply the brakes. And a train like this would not have stopped on a dime obviously. And we do know that after the impact the train did keep moving and that jeep was essentially dragged about 40 feet even more underneath the train and that is what caused the explosion and the fire that you eventually saw. The engineer did not have enough time after teague sa truck. And this knot the first problem theyve had on that route north of new york. Gus, thank you very much for joining us tonight on that breaking news story. Our coverage of these stories will continue after this break. Test. Breaking news on first look. Jordan executes two jihadists. And the latest on a deadly plane crash in taiwan. Dark darkcam appears to capture its final moments. Good morning, everybody.
