Amid the commotion, heidi cruz, escorted from the room, as Trump Supporters reportedly yelled at her. Donald trump tweeted last night, wow, ted cruz got booed off the stage, didnt honor the pledge. I saw his speech two hours earlier, but let him speak anyway. No big deal. And this is trump exiting the quicken loans arena last night. Mr. Trump, any reaction to ted cruz tonight, mr. Trump . I mean, that was a remarkable moment. What did you think . I loved it. You loved it . Why . He loved it. Why . On morning joe today, donald trump jr. Said that ted cruz did last night really was a surprise, despite conflicting reports on how much the family in the campaign knew. We knew that wasnt coming. You know, again, my father wanted all the guys that wanted to be here. Of he wanted to get them on the platform. I think he wants to show hes about unity. So he knew that was happening. He was a better man about it. Go ahead. Do you think he betrayed you, betrayed that goodwill you just talked about . I think cruz used very bad judgment. I think he made a mistake. I think he was not respectful to the invitation by the convention to come and speak. That he understood what the responsibilities are of somebody in his position. And he didnt meet them. So it all overshadowed governor mike pences speech. A lot of people praised his speech. But, again, it became the secondtier conversation. I accept your nomination to run and serve as vice president. Of the United States of america. Nbcs Hallie Jackson on the phone, and she was at a meeting of texas delegates this morning. Attended by senator cruz. Halle, first, describe how senator cruz handled this. Hes there, hes with the people from his home state. My home state. And he has to answer these questions. And they werent delicately put. No. In some cases, respectfully put. And in some cases put at a rather high volume. But cruz did get pressed repeatedly about these questions we have been talking about. Who he plans to vote for. He talked about the personal attacks against him from donald trump, against his wife, against his father. And he was pressed by delegates onthtoo. People asking, and in our conversations afterwards, people talking to us about this too. Saying, listen, ted cruz has to make make it not personal any more. He has to get over it. In the words of some delegates. Others, though, told us, hey, when somebody comes after your family, you have every right to not have to support them. A fascinating glimpse into the human drama of it all. Ill tell you this. Cruz, in responding listen, tamron, you know ive covered ted cruz for a long time, before now, going on the trail with donald trump. And he often answers questions at his rallies and events and town halls during the primaries. It felt like that. Taking q a from the audience. But he was incredibly fired up at the end. He was angry he wanted this. Yes, i feel like when i watched that meeting this morning and even as he walked off stage, ted cruz came in, locked and loaded. He wanted it. I think his misstep was not to tell his wife to not get out of that building fast enough. Leave her in the getaway car. That was a hard scene to watch, heidi cruz being dragged into this as a spouse. Yeah. And i think that it goes to show just how personal this can be for candidates. Talk about the breakfast this morning. He got up on stage, and one of the things we were watching, how was the delegation this morning going to respond . We heard the boos last night, from the convention center. Whats going to happen with this Smaller Group of delegates and guests. There was applause, and then again also special people who were raising their voices in protests. One man had a sign saying i think its A Clinton Cruz 2020. And people were yelling out questions at him. He would say, you know you know, im hearing some people saying youre not doing it. It was really an interesting call and response, tamron. Remarkable. I understand you have some new reporting on Donald Trumps campaign, as well. What can you tell us . Is. So we reached out, my folks over there, about response to what happened this morning with ted cruz. Todays remarks at the delegate breakfast and i was told by a senior aide, the primaries are over, now is the time as a party. You know, reiterating that trump offered cruz that speaking slot. They say unconditionally, pointing to other former rivals they invited. And really the trump camp getting down to what is their essential message. They want to push this message. This is a binary choice that were talking about here. Either youre with the trump pence ticket or directly helping. Thats the message the trump team nds to send. Unless youre fully on board with donald trump, youre in some way backing Hillary Clinton. And ill tell you, from being at that breakfast this morning, its trickling down to at least some delegates we spoke with who made that point to cruz himself. That one woman or there said something along the lines of, if youre not supporting donald trump, arent you arent you helping Hillary Clinton. That is when cruz said definitely he is not voting for Hillary Clinton. But didnt say he would vote for donald trump either. Thank you. Thank you so much for joining me. Thanks for having me. How did you describe what happened in that room . Its a blood feud. I think ted cruz needs to put his big boy pants on. This is a political party. Does he want to be an independent or a republican . The Republican Party has spoken. But did he put his big boy pants on by standing up and in his words, not being a puppy dog for donald trump . And i ask you this, because their battle became far more than policy. Yeah. Its a blood feud. Theyre very upset with each other. This often happens in these primaries. This a political party. Hes welcome to run as an independent if he wants to. The party had an election. They voted for donald trump. He needs to get with the team, put those things aside. I mean, donald trump said a lot of negative things about a lot of the candidates. Little marco, for example. That moniker is going to stick with him for the rest of his life. Marco rubio made a video, very positive towards trump. Chris christie had some negative attacks from donald trump. Chris christie people have forgotten about them. Theyre ready to jump in behind the nominee. This is about the future of this country. This is about defeating Hillary Clinton, and i am a little embarrassed for texas today. I think ted cruz needs to get incline. Im always proud of my home state of texas, and i actually said to someone yesterday, if you think ted cruz is a texan who is going to go out there and not do exactly what he did, youre nuts. I spoke with a Huffington Post reporter and i couldnt see it happening. I did not see this playing out, because this is the deal here, carl. The question, whats more important, party or country. And ted cruz seemed to believe country. Why not honor his decision . I get why show up at the convention. But what is more important . Party or country. If you believe someone is not just unqualified, but dangerous for the world. I will tell you, party and country are aligned at this point. Its not your party. But someone elses party doesnt agree with that. Well, you know, in our party and thats what were talking about. Ted cruz is a member of the Republican Party, if he wants to continue to be a member, thats what we do. Sometimes we suck it up and go for candidates we dont like. I had to put up with john mccain. I had to put up with mitt romney. Put the bumper stickers on my car, drove to other states, blockwalked, donate, stuffed envelopes. Thats what you do. And as much as it hurts, you suck it up, get out there, fight for your party, fight for your team but ive got a young girl behind me that says lebron james for president. This is not a sport. Its our country. So let me ask you, would you vote for someone you believe was dangerous for this country . You know, its not about what i believe. But im asking you. But its a collective primary. You know, if any one of these gentlemen all these people in this primary are qualified to be president. I mean, thats a given. Of they were all very successful in their given jobs and elected offices or in business. So thats not a question. Any one of these people know how to run an amazing organization. Were talking i dont think thats a question. Including Hillary Clinton . Is she qualified . Well, shes not qualified, just because shes obviously broken the law in several ways. That makes her unqualified. And serious law. She wasnt indicted. You know that, right . She wasnt indicted, but she should have been. But when youre not indicted, that means youre not been charged. This is a feral convention. I wouldnt be surprised if i saw cats straying across the stage. First of all, lets talk about cruz. He sat down with me on friday, and more or less, signaled he was going to do this. Yes. Everybody with a brain everyone knew it. Accessed to the worldwide web knew he was going to do this, right . Okay. Why put him on prime time on the third night . Wouldnt you want to get him out of the way, maybe have him at 6 00 p. M. On monday . So then you can have two or three days, three full days of programming pro trump programming between him and the nominee . I just have to say, Corey Lewandowski, who much maligned former campaign manager. Roger stone told me two months ago, Corey Lewandowski was an exceptional road manager. A road manager for a band. This campaign could use a road manager now. So this is theatre, is that what youre implying here . That this was theatre . I was there on the convention floor. And i was standing right outside that vip box. And i could see trump watching the whole scene. And when the boos started to build, he steps out of the shadows, and into the light. It was a moment. Well, there is also a moment, and we may be able to rerack it, the cameras caught donald trump jr. Giving a thumbs up. Maybe he was giving a thumbs up to someone down below, thank you. But suddenly, there was a shift of his eye and his dad comes out. It really did and i hate to keep bringing up the wwe connection with donald trump. It seemed orchestrated. The campaign doesnt deny Paul Manafort comes around, talking to reporters right after this all happens, tamron. And we said, did you orchestrate the boos, and he just smiled and laughed. Glen . Look, the thing about cruz is, cruz outtrumped trump. You know, trump is supposed to be the candidate of audacity. I think what trump and his people forgot, ted cruz has a huge anti authoritarian streak. And right now, donald trump is the establishment of this party. You know, ask Mitch Mcconnell what kind of bargaining partner ted cruz is. Absolutely. And robert, the other point here, i know people say this could be the end of ted cruzs political career. The bushes are not here. Koch money is still on the side. Yes, sheldon adelson, apparently, kicked him out of the vip booth. But there are many other vip Booths Available in the future if donald trump does not win. Sheldon adelson is not the only person ready to open his pocket. Glen wrote a great piece last night, talking about the Political Risk cruz is taking with this maneuver. And its a Political Risk. Because cruz is making the gamble, and it may be right, it may be wrong, that come 2020, should donald trump lose, the Republican Party is going to return to its conservative ideological roots, and theyre going to want someone like cruz to come up the center. But thats taking into account the idea that trump wont really change the Republican Party. But when you look at this convention, and you talk to the delegates, my reporting bears out to me, this party in some ways is tilting populus. Its not becoming the party of trump fully. But trumpism is filtering in. David frum tweeted this out a short time ago from the atlantic. He says, ten years from now, every delegate in tonights hall still alive will have claimed to have cheered ted cruz. I thought that was a very interesting weight. No risk, no reward. We still look at the setup of it all. What does ted cruz have to lose . He wants to be president. Im not sure he wants to continue to be a senator, a disliked senator. I do think he has the line that i would repeatedly hear about ted cruz, the only thing more unpopular on capitol hill than ted cruz is a cash bar. But ted cruz really wants to be the partys nominee in 2020. And the big risk here is, ted cruz, a. , missing out on his populus wave. Think about something else. Ted cruz spoke about gay folks, gay ted cruz spoke about immigrants. Ted cruz is moderating his tone. He wants to he talked about africanamericans protecting police and protecting innocent people who are the victims of Police Brutality. He tried to throw it all out there, hoping he can circle back one day. Thats his hope. But that means donald trump is going to lose in his mind. You said earlier, this is politics. Again, looking back at some of the things that were exchanged in an unprecedented way. I said, this is real life. Listen, you dragged my wife, you dragged me, you said my father killed kennedy. No place in politics when that corporate sheen, when the talking points come off and it becomes humid. That happened in real life. This was not a sport last night. This was real life. How did it feel to make the case, not only to the delegates there, but to potential minority voters out there that you believe he can get . First of all, its easy for me to attempt to make the case, because i know him. If i didnt know him personally, it would be different. But because i know him, a know a lot of the things they say about him just simply arent true. So its easier for me to speak from my heart. I didnt have a speech writer, so i was able to speak from my heart and say what i thought would be most effective, to convince them of the reason why im convinced. You mentioned in your speech unemployment. Factcheck. Org says this. Pastor Darrell Scott falsely claimed that there was higher minority unemployment under president obama, when, in fact, the Unemployment Rates for africanamericans, hispanics and asians were all down. The United States has added at least 9 million private sector jobs, real Weekly Earnings have gone up 3. 4 . The Unemployment Rate is 7. 8. When obama took office, it hit 10 in 2009. It has gone now down to 5 . Numbers dont lie, right . Well, it depends on where you get your numbers from. Im going to fact check factcheck. And youll get back to me like scott baio. You know, when he came to the office, we were in the midst of a depression so, of course, the mortgage industry took such a bad turn that africanamericans, i dont think the country realized how many africanamericans were affected by that mortgage crash, because i personally know a lot of africanamericans that were in that business. But that was before the obama administration. The housing crash happened before mr. Obama came in at that time. And so, you know, the recovery is there, slowly. But still, minority unemployment is very high. I want your thoughts on what the New York Times said yesterday about black republicans see White Convention heavy on lecture. For many black republicans, the party has veered unexpectedly toward lecturing and moralizing on issues of race. Guiliani and others who i think for some people watching made the case that somehow you cannot be pro black officers, pro Police Officers, rather, and also be concerned about the number of africanamericans either shot by police or Police Brutality. That we cant be both. You cannot care about black you cannot care about Police Officers and black lives. Thats not thats not good. I mean, you know one thing i say i said when they say black lives matter, i say to me that title is incomplete. It should be black lives matter too. Right. Too. And thats all the movement is trying to say. That we matter, as well. Were not theyre not nullifying. But why didnt we hear that from some of the speakers . Ted cruz yesterday as he was burning down the house brought up the issue of Police Brutality and violence against police, seeming to open his arms. Why didnt we hear more from speakers last night to say just that . We are concerned about both sides. If you want them to vote for donald trump . Well, you know why did it have to come from a black pastor . I cant speak for them. Everyone is given an allotted period of time and they have people to assist them in what they were doing. So i dont want to vilify them. But i do think, first of all, i think the Democratic Party is pushing this. Im going to be honest. Im sick of this stuff. The whole country is walking on eggshells. You have to be so nice and polite and politically correct and watch what we say. It seems like we cant be normal. And just have normal interaction. And so this whole race issue seems as if during this election cycle, is being overblown. I believe its coming from the democratic camp. Race baiting and playing the race card, because thats a card theyre trying to play against donald trump and the entire Republican Party. You dont believe donald trump when he did not disavow kkk, endorsement and some of the things said on the campaign trail from donald trump, he seems bewildered why White Supremacists in large numbers have supported him. He says he doesnt know why they have had they have been attracted to his campaign. And i can believe that. But hes not going to tell them not to vote for him. Heres one thing ive always said. I believe hes being weighed in a different type of balance. The bible says a false balance is an abomination. And i think thats going to happen. So i want to be very respectful here at the Republican National convention, respectful of the fact that donald trump won the nomination. But i would love to be in that debate, come november. 15 to show up at the polls on average to get on the debate stage there. If you hit that number and you feel confident you will, do you believe that jeb bush could potentially endorse you, or even ted cruz, who said, wont vote for Hillary Clinton. But clearly, hes not planning to vote for donald trump. Well, in november, its not going to be an essay question when you go in the booth. Its going to be multiple choice. Is there any balance in some of the talks youve had with people around here . I think most rational people are against violence, right . Theyre against violence against Police Officers. Theyre against violence against citizens. Most people feel the same way about that issue. But there are people on both sides that take certain things more seriously than others. There are people who feel that the police should be protected over everyone. There are people that feel like the citizens should be protected over everyone. And i think thats the major line of contention right now. Who do we choose to protect first . I think, you know, the problem is, a lot of people dont realize that number one, being a Police Officer is an extremely difficult job. But it is a job. Its a job you apply for, its a job that, you know, if you want to become a Police Officer, you go into it knowing the inherent danger of the position. That being said, the citizen shouldnt be doing anything to make that more difficult. On the other hand, its not easy being a person nowadays. Its not easy being living in the inner cities of america, dealing with certain environments, dealing with the elements in those environments. And sometimes that element can be wearing a badge. Its not reflective of Police Officers in general. Most Police Officers want to do the right thing. But in life, no matter what we do, the numbers will show, if you pick 100 people, one of them will probably be a bad person. We are waiting, in fact, for an update on a situation playing out in miamidade. An individual, Charles Kinsey, his shooting caught on tape. The details at this point is that Charles Kinsey worked as a caretaker at a Mental Health facility, a 24yearold man who is severeliy autistic wandered. Andkins see found him sitting in the middle of the street. Officers responded. Mr. Kinsey was seen in the video, lying on his back with his hands up. He was shot in his leg. According to a police statement, officers tried to negotiate with the two men at one point, and an officer fired. This has gone viral. The image of a black man with his hands up, and still being shot. Again, this is all under investigation. And were waiting to get more information from the states attorneys office. Nevertheless, there is a concern that next week well be in philadelphia, and some democrats will attempt to exploit an advantage with black voters with minority voters ear. What do you see as the realistic conversation, moving forward that will potentially avoid exploitation from both sides, of the police, rnc, if its black voters at the dnc . I think we have to find a new level of accountability in this country. I think that there are issues in the inner city where people that reside in the inner city are not doing and i can say this, being from the inner city. Theres a lot more that we could do to better our neighborhoods that were not doing. At the same time, the people that come in our neighborhoods and tell us, look, you have criminals. You have felons. Hand them over to us. Do the right thing. People have issues with that, because because the Police Community isnt doing that. They arent taking their bad apples, they arent exposing them and they arent handing them over for proper judicial process. And thats where the distrust in the conversation comes from.
