Good evening from our nbc headquarters in new york. The president kicked off with the nato summit with the attack on the alliance. Just as few hours ago after midnight in brussels, he wrote this. Billions of additional dollars are being spent by nato countries since my visit last year at my request. It is not enough. U. S. Spends too much. Europes borders are bad. Pipeline dollars to russia are not acceptable. Germany buys natural gas from russ russia. It is very sad when germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with russia where we are supposed to be guarding russia and germany goes out and pays billions and billions dollars a year to russia. We are supposed to protect you against russia but theyre paying to russia and i think thats appropriate. Germany is controlled by russia because theyll get 60 or 70 of their energy from russia and a new pipeline. You tell me if thats appropriate because i think it is not. Germany is captive to russia because it is getting so much of its energy from russia. German chancellor merkel responded to trump by reminded him that she had grown up in soviet occupied country and her country makes its own independent decisions. White house chief staff john kelly and u. S. Ambassador Kate Bailey Hutchinson and mike pompeo, they have no choice but to sit there and listen to the chief of staff wore his discomfort more visibly than the other two. The president brought up his other big criticism where nato is concerned of defense spending. He proposed their spending double their goals. He added this from his phone, quote quote, what good of nato in germany is paying russia billion ls of dollars for gas and ene y energy . Why are there only 5 out of 29 countries that have met their commitment . Former cia director says he has a very fundamental concern. The president of the United States has to protect our country from our adversaries, i worry that this president for whatever reason is not operating with the awareness of how much an adversary russia is to the stability of the United States. And as they say that gets your attention. Former secretary of state john kerry issued a strong statement that reads in part. I have never seen a president say anything as strange or counter productive as President Trumps harangue against nato and germany. He makes public adversaries out of our friends and turn our adversaries who have been attacking americas democracy into his allies. The president set america back this morning and hes steadily destroying our reputation in the world. There was push back from members of trumps party today. No open criticisms mind you but largely measured responses. He wants to make sure that they get to the full percentage whether it is 2 or something that they need to be spending . In other words, put your money where your mouth is. We value our alliance. We value our allies. You got to pay your own way. The american taxpayers have carried them on their backs. Theyre versatile people. I met Angela Merkel over there. I have my opinion of her. The tone of what we are doing is something thats not good for the ealliance. Nato is important today as it ever has been. At the summit we are often left to read the body language among the leaders. When trump tried a handshake of theresa may, she redirected to someone else. And this scene was unusual for an american president with the leaders of the other nation out front to a walk of a photo opt, there with donald trump with the au authoritarian. With that, lets introduce our panel for tonight. Green and welcome good evening and welcome to all of you. Peter, you have been around for a while and how seismic was today and what is your Damage Assessment to nato as of the time of this conversation . It is hard to remember a moment quite like this. It is not that the issues that President Trump are raise are not out there before. In fact, they have. Obama and president bush certainly pushed their allies under their defense. They came up with 2 of 2014 and supposed to meet that target by 2024. Neither of them did it in your face kind of way like trump does it. And neither of them going into the summit and going into attack the way President Trump did today. Today in advance of meeting that hell have with russias president in just a few days, a meeting that he promised to be friendly and easier than his meeting with the allies. You cant find a parallel of this or a close parallel of this. I have been doing a lot of reading of 1989 and the unification of germany. It is striking how close america and germany is and we are the exact opposite today. Lets talk about what may led up to today. This president needs an opponent to function at his best. Does he view all of the Alliance Members as opponents . What else is motivating what he said and did today . Whats going on here . A couple of things, he views them as a good target for his base. His base likes him going out there and not necessarily attacking nato per se and again they dont necessarily care about this one specific natural gas pipeline between russia and germany. They do like the idea of the president they elected standing up for america, standing up for their countries and them and saying to people, you know, we are not going to be taken advantage of. They believe the u. S. Is taken advantage of by these countries. These countries are our allies. Thats not necessarily the correct target. The second issue is the president has this uncanning ability to take his own weaknesses and vulnerability such as for instance of his own coziness and turn it back on someone else. He knows hell be getting all of this negative russia coverages and too close to putin and what about the meeting coming up on monday. Instead of dealing that, he takes it and he laughs at germany. This is classic trumps play book and boomeranging at somebody else. Was this a cheap and easy way to look tough on russia when he knows there is a premium on that and i know you happen to believe hes much tougher when the principals are not right there in the room with him. Exactly. Just as the man who became famous by saying you are fired, have never personally fired any of the people thats been let go from the administration. We saw first thing this morning or many of us in the east coast were up that he had levelled this attack against germany but he levelled it in the presence directly the table from the nato secretary general. Later he met personally with Angela Merkel, the target of his jibes, he could not have been nicer. He was complemeimentary. If hes such an in your face, why didnt he do it on Angela Merkel. Mike pompeo is now in washington, there is an Industry Senate around the words what the president meant to say. This was a classic, i will read it off the screen. Nato is the most successful alliance in history. All nato allies have committed to extending this success through increased defense spending deterrence and defense and fighting terrorism. Weakness provokes and strength and cohesion protects. Peter, thats the kind of thing we used to hear from u. S. President s. Exactly right. Whats different is the way he approaches it. Whats different is he treats these allies as if they are enemies and adversaries. Thats what really is striking about it. It is not that we dont have concerns of this pipeline, there are concerns. It is not that we dont have concerns of military spending, we do. Bipartisan, it is not new. Pompeo is doing what other administration did. They acknowledge the issue and press in a sentgentle and frien way to make a point but without casting the other side as if they were somehow an enemy or somehow antiamerican in their approach. And ashley to the point you were making, i saw bannon on fox news tonight with sean hannity, abandon was talking about how tough on putin trump was being and yet a lightbulb went off. Putin looks at trump at a day of today thinking there is the leader of the western world. Turns out mr. Bannon is having dinner with some of the hard brexit folks. We have this reporting from politco tonight. Bannons goal was to help c contextualize trump for european audience. I ask this because a lot of people watching the president attacks germany and wonders where those talking points came from. I dont know if they came directly from steve bannon. It is an interesting coincidence that hes there and to sort of parts his motives. On the one hand of what he did throughout the campaign and early into the white house which is to try to take President Trump assort of a convenient vessel or vehicle and use that as a populism sweeping the globe, bannon was someone that cast out of this white house and he committed the sin of criticizing the president s family and the president over russia. You have to imagine when bannon goes on a show we although that President Trump watches on fox news, hes also sort of trying to get the president s ears and end a message to him and get back to the president s good graces. He would love to be on that list of people who the president late at night sneaks around john kelly and calls from the residence again. Jackie, talk about the optics of an overseas trip. The first part of which is spent with our oldest and best friends, the last stop is the private time the president requested with Vladimir Putin. Well, this of course raises the scenario and speck to to allies of his recent trip which he went to the g7 summit of the alliance of the Major Industrial democracies in quebec and it fell apart and he refused to sign the groups over trade disputes and went off early to singapore to meet with kim jongun of north korea. Like a bromance and you have here the same sort of set up where hes been with allies and it has not gone well and hes off to meet president putin who by his own admission who he left the white house the other day will be the easiest of his visits. The optics are if this again as we presume it will follow the scripts of g7 and kim jongun, it is really underscores this completely mystery as to how the president of the United States can be some one so friendly to autocrats while danger to our allies. A good question to end on. We appreciate the three of you starting us off on this busy night. Coming up after a break. Paul manafort will be leaving the jail where prosecutors treat him like a v. I. P. Where he does not have to dress like other inmates and have phone images. How the president contempt for you as allies is playing to his base back home. Hes being held two hours away in what they are calling solid tear confinement. Special Counsel Robert Mueller responded to the request today painted of a different picture of his incarceration. Hes been enjoying unique privileges including his own bathroom and shower and a personal telephone and personal laptop and work space and he does not have to wear a prison uniform like those other inmates. We learned the muellers team have been listening to manaforts private calls. In one he mentioned hes being treated like a v. I. P. Well, not for long. A judge today denied manaforts request to remain in the v. I. P. Cell. Manafort asked for his client to move closer to alexander, virginia. They backed off after the requests was granted prompting a sharp review. It is surprising and confusing when counsel identifies a problem and then opposes the most logical solution to that problem wch problem. With us tonight, our senior White House Reporter of politico and cynthia at d. O. J. Josh, we have you back because you predicted all of this last night and you will go home with a copy of our home game. What stood out to you in light of all that looking at the Court Documents today. Well, what struck me brian is sometimes you will hear judges dressing down and attorneys one side and the other in court. It is more rare for them to put that kind of criticism in writing. He was sugigesting the defense position is in coherent that it was one way at one time and a couple of days later, it moved in the other direction. Not only manafort under cut any efforts hes making to delay the trial. He under cut an appeal thats underway trying to get him to release from jail all together. It is a pretty significant setback. Hes also now going to be as you say moved up to alexandria and taken out the gentle conditions he was being held in there. Cynthia, i am always learning interesting things about you and tonights interesting thing that you are a former member of the virginia board of corrections. My experience with virginia corrections is limited to a couple of trips to death row and virginia and a lot of time spent covering during the years. I have not in my travel seen any nobody have been so pampered in the virginia jail system. I find the whole things shocking. All this time to himself and he had a work room to himself and they got a special extension cord so they can move back and forth and the phone calls are particularly shocking. In virginia jail system, there is a legitimate issue that inmate do not have access to the phones that they need and theyre charged for them. It is a huge issue in jails across the country, by the way. Right. It is important one and he seems surprised that mueller is listening to him. Of course, mueller is listening to them and except the one to his lawyer. There is nothing surprising about that. Nobody has been pampered than this guy and the audacity to complain about it and have his lawyers wining hes in solitary confinement. Hes done himself a huge disservice because now the judge knows hes full of it. Worse for him that the judge thinks maybe his lawyers are full of it. When you are in the courtroom, you have to your credibility is critical and not just with the judge. More than that they may have done something very wrong which is according to these phone cal calls, manafort was allowed two computers and he would type out emails and draft them and giver give it to the team and send it out in violation of the jails rules. Manafort knows who it is. It is not just manafort who thinks hes above the law. It is somebody on the team and that person hurt their credibility with the judge which will play out the next several months. Josh, there are two manafort trials, please sort those out for us and tell us why the manaforts forces are hoping for one to begin before the other. Well, this is an interesting indication in the Mueller Court filing today was that their theory about it from the intercepted conversations going in and out of jail is that muellers defense team have apparently would rather go to trial in d. C. Than in virginia because even if they lose there, it will be of some benefits to him and the implications that i took is that they think it would make President Trump more likely to grant the pardon. The d. C. Child had to do with the foreign lobbying for ukraine and alleged Money Laundering related to that. The virginia trial is basic, simple attacks of asians and bank fraud. How did he get these expensive suits and rugs and Home Renovations out of his accounts overseas. They may feel the optic of that trial is good for a pardon that something to seem to have connection with russia. Thats what i read between the lines in this filing today. Cynthia, i want to ask you and end on this when the news starts piling up, i asked you various versions of this question. What personal knowledge or memory do you have Robert Mueller that sustains you in your belief that when this is all over, justice will be served and the bad guys will be identified and prosecuted . Well, we worked the case together and i thought he was honorable and solid and i talked to him a little bit about his career because i was sort of starting mine and having children. He had his children and they were grown and in college and i really looked up to him and i had a chance to talk to him and i found him to be honorable. I remember one time we went down into the basement, he had to do an interview of a witness. You know you can tell a lot about a person the way they do an interview of a witness whos hostile to you. And, this witness it was a murder case, this witness was hostile to him and he treated him with respect and demanded the truth from him. He was not a bullying prosecutor. He was not somebody you would be afraid to take notes on what was happening in the room. I have always found and always thought he was one of the most honorable people that i encountered at my time at the United States Attorneys Office in d. C. And i wanted very much to be like him as i grew as a prosecutor. Thank you both, you guys are both invited back on this broadcast, any time. Really appreciate it. Germany is totally controlled by russia. They paid billions of dollars to russia and now we have to defend them. As you heard from germany, it remains a bracing attack on one of this countrys closest allies. 31 years ago standing in front of a structure that both dominated and divided the city of berlin. President Ronald Reagan delivered a speech of affirming u. S. Support for germany at a time when that part of the country was under soviet control. As long as this gate is close and as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand. Th , it it is not the german question alone remains open but the question of freedom of all mankind. Senator gorbchav if you seek peace and liberalization, come here to this gate. Open this gate. Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall. The rest as they say is history. The east side of the wall was a young woman named Angela Merkel. With us tonight to talk about what we are witnessing, our friend steve schimtd. Steve, i have a twopart question. Mr. President , you are playing house money and this was not the way we intended with nato. Steve, what is it that we are witnessing today . Brian, thank you for having me. What we are witnessing first office the western alliance, the Nato Alliance and the most important and most successful military alliance in the history of the world which is kept at peace in europe for the last 73 years and have led europe from destruction to prosperity held back soviet and has helped spread freedom across all the captive nations of eastern europe. All of these countries that are up there today, all of them have shed blood. Their son as and daughters have died fighting for the United States, upon the occasion of the attack of the United States on september 11th. The president of the United States of this institution indifference to these allies and their sacrifices, indifference to the shared values of liberties and freedoms that binds all of our country together that trump has a great af affinity for it. When we see him, it is a tragic day. When you weaken the most important military alliance of the history of the world, uma i can the world a more dangerous place and you are doing Vladimir Putin bidding with no higher strategic goal than unravel the European Union and unravel the Nato Alliance. My larger question of which what we ask every night is why, why would that be apart of trumps motive . Well, trump is part of a spreading autocratic nationalism and populism that we see. We see a regression of liberal democracy. This president has shown from day one of his indifference for liberal democracy. He has a phonetfetish for autoc and he praises them all over the world from putin to kim jongun. I dont know why he had an affinity for Vladimir Putin. I cant explain to you why he in salted everybody from rosie owe dona o donald and theresa may but never putin. It sends a dangerous message. America has stood for a liberal ideal against tyranny, you see trump through his actions weakening those ideas. It is dangerous for the United States and for all the people of the world who want to live in peace and freedom. Steve, lets talk abouts the one thing that does seem to reunite republicans and even some never trumpers and thats the choices this president have made and promises to make for the Supreme Court. You are a recovering sherpa and having been in the role. What do you make of the selection of judge kavanaugh and the rollout so far. I play a leading role of the mention of chief Justice Roberts and justice kagan. I believe the president s have the prerogative and should be able to nominate. Brett cakavanaugh is a judge thats no, maam maminated by a like jeb bush or rubio. And so not only has mcconnell broken the ins institutititutio senate but he delegitimatize to some degree of the third branch of government, the Supreme Court. Democrats will never look at this seat as legitimate and that further phrase our already toxic political culture. I want to say this and we are not talking enough about the deal here. When the White House Department press secretary today dodges around the question whether trump and kennedy had a meeting where kavanaugh was discussed as the replacement should kennedy retire, maybe kennedy suggesting hell retire if it is kavanaugh when kennedys son is trumps banker, there are aspect of this that stinks. We have not talked enough about that. When we talk about Supreme Court court justices, we expect the highest levels of integrity. The issue that you will recuse from are important part of confirmation process. I think democrats would be wise to focus on this issue in the confirmation to make Brett Kavanaugh to promise to pledge that hell recuse himself from any decision involving questions about whether the president is above the law or the president should be compelled to testify in an ongoing criminal investigation that lurches closer to the oval office everyday. Join us from what has become the Straight Talk studio, steve schimdt. We appreciate your time. Coming up next. Hes accomplishing what more polite president could not. Donald trump over the years on the topic of nato, lets get right into our conversation. John meacham is with us tonight, his latest book the soul of america, and jeremy peters, gentlemen, welcome to you both. Jeremy, it has been said that everything the president said about nato is for the base. Is geo politics is a big prize to way to do well in the midterms . It is entirely consistent of what trump has said since he started campaigning for president if not before. You go to the inaugural address, he talks about how we leave our border defenseless and you go back to the campaign where he spoke about americas first and we have stupid leaders whos been taken advantage of other countries. It fits all right into that. The display you saw today was the rawest and purest form of ameri americas first. This is him playing with our house money. Hes speaking for us that way with nato which have lost 1100 kids in afghanistan by the way. Thats right. Thats not how he sees the world. It is not just americas first, it is trumps first. Okay mr. Long view. Yes. What is the Lasting Impact of what you witness just today. What from today lives on in future john meachams books and your next generation . I dont think it breaks it apart in any kind of irreplaceable way. Theyre used to Parliament System and used to these spasms that we are having now. Nobody knows how to wait people out more than europeans. I think theyre going to wait them out. I think it could have a serious impact. While trump is president of the United States, his words is going to have to be trusted or hes going to have to trust the words of one of these allies in some matter of national security. Why anyone would believe anyone after this is a great question. Second point and this is a big if which kind of like if trump were not a narcissist which is a great counter factual of our time. If director mueller comes back with something that suggests that donald trump has in some way been a witting and unwitting asset of the russian government then all of this falls into a different kaleidoscope, was he saying or was he trying to bring russia into, was he trying to get them into a normal place and now he can say you know even germany is in bed with him. I was dealing him the same way our allies do and everybody does. This could be setting a predicate for everybody is in business with the russians. Look at the germans. Mr. Peters, where is mr. Bannon in all of this . I think right now besides himself with glee, he thinks this is really well and their whole plan this week has been kind of Counter Program and what they saw as ensured hostility once President Trump set foot on european soil. As we were talking about during the break, sean hannity and steve bannon is over in europe right now talking what about a Great Success this was. This focus now shifts to the midterms and whether or not bannon and the populus can galvanize enough team to vote and impeach President Trump. Thats the biggest fight. 45 seconds of Pulitzer Prize of greatness. Yes, to this extent because hes rhetorically and in fact trying to make americas first, america only, or if anything america plus russia. One of the Great Questions of the age and one that well wrestle with forever, why does donald trump has this conflict with russia, our long time historic adversary, this question is getting a lot hotter after that meeting. If in fact they had some leverage over him because of preexisting deals or some sort of business things, this will be written about forever. Im telling the truth look, i stood up to the speaker of house for my home state. Stood up to the is and the fbi. To think i would not stand up for my athletes is ridiculous. Ohio republican congressman jim jordan is again denying those allegations from several former Ohio State University wrestlers. They have accuses jordan of being aware of and yet ignoring complaints of sexual abuse. Involving a doctor who worked with the team over 20 years ago. Well today, words of support from House Republican leaders including but not limited to Speaker Paul Ryan who did not specifically refer to the allegations. Jim jordan is a friend of mine. We havent always agreed with each other over the years. What about you ive always known jim jordan to be a plan of honesty and a man of integrity. I also want to make sure that ohio state conducts the review of this doctor and what he did. Thats important so that campuses are safe. And im glad jim is supporting that review. Another important guy in this, North Carolina congressman mark meadows leads up the conservative House Freedom caucus that jordan cofounded. Well, obviously, i support jim jordan. Ive known him for six years. I know hes a guy that fightses for the underdog. Always has and you know ive had a number of conversations with him and really at this particular point, i know that if abuse allegations were brought up to him, hed have been the first one to come to the defense. Four former College Wrestlers tell nbc news that jordan knew about the alleged abuse while he was working there as an assistant coach. They paint a salacious picture of a highly charged sexual sphere that surrounded the ohio state wrestling program back then. One of the men who talked with nbc news says he complained directly to jordan at the time. We should also tell you six former wrestling coaches at ohio state released a statement saying the allegations against jordan are absolutely wrong adding none of us saw or heard of abuse of osu wrestlers. The wellbeing of student athletes was all of our concern. If we had heard of any abuse, we would have spoken up. He has said is the accusations may be politically driven and suggests the controversy may be in response to his recent tough questioning of rod rosenstein. Today the congressman was on the offensive attacking the continuing News Coverage in this form. Now cnn is contacting all 100 plus of our former staff and interns asking for dirt on me, getting desperate. How can you ever trust such fake news. Another break for us. But it doesnt mean you cant get back on track. Great. Yeah, great. Id like to go back to bermuda. I hear its nice. Yeah, id like to see it. No judgment. Just guidance. Td ameritrade. The last thing before we go here tonight is a look back on there day. We saw a kind of backhanded history made today. We watched our president speak with genuine contempt for a u. S. Ally and a u. S. Alliance. The president says nothing by accident. And so there are reasons behind how he acted today and what he said today. But for folks who have been around for any time at all, as you have just heard this past hour, it sure is bracing to hear an american president going after our own allies especially at a meeting of the organization built upon the promise of all for one and one for all. All kinds of people have been talking about there on television all day. But theres only so much an american can say about this no matter how learned. So perhaps it will be useful to hear how it went over in russia. Whether he donald trump attacked germany a powerful nato ally, and nato itself, our most Critical Military alliance. Translator there you have it right there. After all these years and all the effort first by the soviet union, then by russia aimed at tearing apart the most successful alliance in the history of the modern world, there are some folks watching all this in russia who cannot get over their good fortune because they have a u. S. President as they see it making their argument and doing the work for them.
