Especially our elected leaders to paint journalism as unamerican, to undermine trust between reporter and reader. [ applause ] or to cast doubt on the relevance of facts and truth in the modern age. The one person missing from the dinner, President Trump. He was busy rallying his base in michigan, energizing them with his thoughts about, who else, the media. By the way, is this better than that phony Washington White House Correspondents Dinner . Is this more fun . I could be up there tonight smiling like i love where they are hitting you shot after shot, these people that hate your guts. Well, let me tell you what i think. Ive gone probably the last ten or 12 years to the white house Correspondents Dinner and i remember i saw donald trump there the last time he was there in the audience when then president barack obama took the occasion to take some very serious and funny shots at mr. Trump, among them he used the line, donald trump proves that orange is the new black and other similar lines. I think donald trump was there last night because hes thin skinned, insecure, not comfortable in his own skin, he cant take joking about himself. I dont think anything to do with the base. Ive never seen him in new york where both of us are from in harlem, or williamsburg for that matter or Southeast Queens where he comes from, queens jamaica states, its not about his base. Its about his selfconcept. Joining me is lynn sweet, Washington Bureau chief for the chicago sun times. Thank you for being with me this morning. Your read on last night. Some felt the main attraction, the comedian went a little over the line and missed the occasion of really hitting it square dead center being funny but at the same time following the theme of the need to really support and really continue to be committed to the first amendment. Well, its a hard one like you now, ive been at many of these dinners and if we celebrate first amendment, you hire a comedian and the comedian has the right to do what he this want. But given that right, i think there comes a responsibility to understand that youre dealing with an audience of journalists and the idea of going too far, using foul language and im personally not get foul language but i wouldnt use it here and now. Theres a time and place for things. I wouldnt embarrass myself and you and company i work for by saying vulgar things on the air. And when you have a national audience, this is a televiced dinner, you dont need to go there if you dont want to create a commotion and controversy that does not need to exist. The comedian had some funny lines but when you scorch, i dont see what the point is because its a journalist dinner, it wasnt a nightclub or caberet or even a roast. Let me get away from the comedian to the president , who was not there. He says hed rather be there in michigan and with the base rather than the elitist. He played us all as elitist and the washington inside crowd. And it continues this consistent pattern, us against them, whether on racelines or whatever lines it may be that i think is disingenuous given who the president is. Hes not really a guy who hangs out in michigan. Aside from that, your view on this us against them kind of politics that hes really mainstreamed as president . Well, he parlaid it into the white house. I want to point out for all of his complaints and this dinner last night, he did go and key note the Foundation Dinner in march. So he did not have did not go to the White House Correspondent dinner and he went to the gridiron dinner and so he could pick and choose what press dinners to go to. The speech he gave last night in washington, michigan and maybe the place was picked deliberately in order to make that point where he would rather be, it was as so much of what he does in the press, it was raw and ugly, not even all correct because this war on journalism, this war on journalists, of course is intended to divide. It is all part of his campaign against facts and he of course is the one who is the biggest abuser when it comes to facts and his success that led to the white house has been these kind of speeches reverend al and thats what he gave again last night as part of his already going on reelection campaign. Thank you, lynn sweet for being with me this morning. With republican control of the house looking more tenuous by the day, going into this years midterm elections, the Congressional Black Caucus which now accounts for nearly a quarter of house democrats, is pushing for more leadership roles for its members if the house does indeed flip for dems. Its a power play that would certainly bolster the caucus profile and break the presumption held by some cbc members that when it comes to blacks in top house positions, theres only room for one. Joining me now is hakim jeffrey, recently worked with Jared Kushner on Prison Reform. Thank you, congressman. I want to get to you and Prison Reform and being able to make an alliance with Jared Kushner that raised some eyebrows. First, let me go to the caucus, theres a real push around the country by democrats to take the house and the senate. We had nancy pelosi and others at National Action networks, pushing out the black vote and the caucus is saying we also want to see more of us in leadership positions. Tell us about it. Well, i think its important to recognize that when it comes to democratic party, africanamerican women are the heart and souls the base that has been driving the Electoral Energy that weve seen, certainly over the last few years and even much further beyond that. But when it comes to the race in virginia and seizing the governorship and all of the statewide positions when it comes to the tremendous upset in alabama that we saw with doug jones defeating roy moore, when it comes to many of the special elections that weve won at the legislative level across the country, this building has been driven by incredible turnout from africanamerican women. We want to make sure i think as a Congressional Black Caucus that that is recognized. We have a big tent in the democratic party. It should mean that everyone is given voice. But that of course is going to include the Africanamerican Community, certainly if were successful in taking back the house. Now, i debated on this on our network here a trump clergy surrogate yesterday. And one of the things that he raised that i know you face and i face around the country is that just because many of us disagree with trump, that there are many people in the black community saying the democrats have to do more. The democrats need to stand up more. The democrats need to be more aggressive. Is there much difference between the two . And is the caucus trying to push the democrats to be even more aggressive in terms of their positions and policy and being able to achieve concrete things for blacks, for women, for the Lgbtq Community and not just operate by were better than them or they are the bad guys, you have to be more than ant antitrump of the are you hearing this and is the caucus move in that vein . Thats correct. I think we recognize that we need an affirmative vision to move the country forward as part of the effort to take back the house. And then the leadership our our chairman and jim clyburn, third ranking democrat in the house of representatives, theres an understanding that one we should all support the notion of fighting for good paying jobs and strong Economic Growth of a Real Infrastructure plan, of a tax plan that actually helps working families and middle class folks across every region of the country that protects Social Security and medicare and that deals with the social justice issues of importance to the Africanamerican Community and beyond. Certainly breaking the back of the Prison Industrial Complex and the mass incarceration epidemic will be important. Youve been a tremendous leader in making sure we fight to repair the Voting Rights act that was damaged unnecessarily by the Supreme Court decision a few years ago. These are things that fwgive li to our democracy and bring life to the notion of liberty and justice for all, equal protection under the law. These are american values, yes, if we get some of these things accomplished it will benefit the Africanamerican Community and benefit our democracy as well. One of the things you touched on which lead me into your efforts around criminal justice and criminal justice legislation is something that ive committed a lot of most of my life fighting, the imbalance in how people are treated in the criminal justice system, whether its mass incarceration, whether sentencing or probation and bail or Police Community relations, you had a bill and youre pushing it forward and youve been able to work with of all people, Jared Kushner. Explain to us the bill and explain how you and Jared Kushner the soninlaw and adviser to President Trump could find some Common Ground here. Well, congressman doug collins whos a conservative republican from rural georgia and i in partnership with our colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee have introduced Prison Reform legislation that is designed to help facilitate successful reentry of currently incarcerated individuals into society so they can become productive citizens by giving them access to the types of educational and vocational programs that have been empirically proven to dramatically reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Jared kushner has indicated his support for this legislation and working with us to secure support amongst folks on the conservative side of the aisle. And as you know, rev, because youre an important part of the effort to bring people together, around the notion of fixing a broken criminal justice system. We incarcerate more people in america than any other country in the world. More than 2. 2 million, disproportionately africanamerican and latino. Its bad for those individuals, bad for those communities and bad for the country and our economic productivity and we need to start somewhere in terms of changing this dynamic. There are those that say aclu and others the bill doesnt go far enough. Youre saying you need to start somewhere because frankly, we sense the obama administration, which had began moving concretely in these areas, we havent been able to get off home plate, less known to first place. Is that your approach that i hear the critics but weve got to start somewhere because people are being locked up and maintained in lockup while were having these kind of beltway debates or academic debates. Absolutely. The mass incarceration epidemic began with nixons war on drugs in 1971 and proceeded unabated largely for 45 plus years. Youre not going to reverse it with just the wave of one legislative magic wand. We have to continue to chip at it aggressively until we can unravel the whole system. Thats why we think a first step in the right direction is helping those individuals who are currently incarcerated get access to the type of programming that will allow them to be job ready upon release, go back home and be productive citizens and bring together a coalition that can continue to do this work until we can finally break the back of the Prison Industrial Complex. Well, were going to be watching. I remember when president obama came in office, he had Newt Gingrich and i tour on education and i know how uncomfortable that was for both of us and the flack we both took. I know where you sit now working with Jared Kushner. Could be a little uncomfortable but it can reform things, its discomfort that is worth while, lets put it that way. Thank you. Thank you congressman. Coming up, well talk to the woman seen in this viral video while being arrested at an alabama waffle house. That and more in a moment. And that 2 cash back adds up to thousands of dollars each year. So i can keep growing my business in big leaps whats in your wallet . As of this minute, President Trump still has yet to comment on the courage of james shore jr. The africanamerican man who disarmed the suspect in the shooting that killed four people at the waffle house restaurant in tennessee earlier this week. Given the optics of an unarmed black man neutralizing a well armed white man in a protrump state, this snub is not surprising. No. But it is telling nonetheless that this president , famous for his attacking people of color on twitter, has not taken the time to celebrate the bravery, despite much of the nation doing so. In the aftermath of the starbucks controversy earlier this month, and now the viral arrest of 25yearold black woman clemens at an alabama waffle house last sunday. Black america cannot count on this white house for public reassurance, let alone policing reform. Joining me now is Attorney Benjamin Crump and his client shakeisha. I know you cant talk a lot about the incident because you were charged and youre still facing that. But first and foremost, how are you doing after this attack that the whole nation saw . How are you feeling . How are you doing . Well, you know, im just taking it day by day. It is so hard, i cant eat, cant sleep, im constantly trying, i have a 6yearold daughter trying to be strong for so she sees me crying and she starts to cry. Its very hard on me at the time right now. After going through this, being humiliated in the way we saw the film body exposed and all, what message do you have to people around the country that have come to stand up for you and stand up for your dignity that are watching you this morning without getting into the details of your case, what message would you say to america this morning from you, the person that has been treated in this way that we saw on the video . What i would like to say is, im so appreciative of the love and the support that you guys are offering and have been giving me. I just want to ask that you guy continue to be behind me, continue to stand behind me as we fight for justice for me and i thank you guys so much. Now, you know, attorney crump, i will be in mobile with you on mobile alabama this tuesday with chikezia and her mother, there are wide complaints about the mobile Police Department and some of whats been going on in waffle houses and other places and well have a town hall to let people come forward and tell us about it. Ill be glad to join you there tuesday night. Let me ask you, what you can share with people around the country of what we saw in that viral as much as you can share with us, give us the background of what caused this and in my opinion, unjustifies it but what brought this about . Reverend al, thank you so much for coming to alabama where it happened, which is a suburb outside of mobile. This all took place because chikesia and her friends were at a waffle house and asked for plastic utensils because she didnt want metal utensils, they wanted to use plastic that they knew were clean and sterilized. The waitress said it will be 50 cents each in a hostile manner. They said we never been charged for plastic utensils before. There was some banter back and forth. Over that argument, she said can i have the corporate phone number because we think youre discriminating against us. From there the waitress yelled at them and called the police on them and so they are trying to say that it was all chikesia and young ladies starting the commotion but there are two independent white women in the restaurant that said what the waitress did and the police did was just unacceptable. They threatened her. They assaulted her and they body slammed this unarmed black woman. They choked her. They told her they were going to break her arm. It was a gross violation of her civil and human rights and this we must defend. We have to stand with her. No doubt. If that video hadnt been there, they probably would have been saying none of this happened. Lets bring in jamil smith, Senior Writer for Rolling Stone magazine. When we saw this video, i mean, it was an outrage. Its almost an understatement. And you were down in montgomery covering the opening of the museum about lynching, which we covered on this show last sunday. And here we are right down the road from where the museum is opening and we see people of color, a black woman treated in this way, no matter what led up to it, how do you drag and humiliate and threaten and expose the breast of a black woman in 2018 and get away with it . Well, i think reverend, what were seeing here of course is simply an evolution of whats being memorialized here in montgome montgomery. When you go into the memorial, one of the things youll see is a listing of different deaths, different murders, that happened and the reason and justifications given for those murders. Some are them are as meaningless as speaking out of turn to a white woman or simply asking for a shovel returned after a job. Things like that were used as justification for the murder of black people in this country. What weve seen now is what b f brian steve ven son that created this memorial and museum would probably say is that weve seen an evolution of that behavior. Usually by police now with murder all the time, they are policed with the kind of behavior we saw with chikesia clemons, utter disregard for the safety and dignity of black people and all over what . It seems plastic utensils . Were seeing very minimum were seeing the very minimum justification for this kind of brutality and were seeing now as ms. Clemons has described the effects of it. I think thats the real point attorney crump were talking about over utensils and you know, im from the north but i spent some time in the south. Ive never heard of paying for utensils at the waffle house. Back in my old bad eating days i would eat at waffle house. Whether thats the case or not, what are we talking about, that you human life, human bodies are can be treated in that way over a 50 cent you want to try to rightfully or wrongfully charge over a fork or knife . And this again, i think jamil is right, is an evolution from the day we were considered property. So now were less than utensils at a waffle house in terms of our bodies being respected . Exactly, reverend al, this harkens back to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with title 2 prohibiting discrimination in public accommodations, we thought we have fought that war and won it against jim crow but now we have jim crow junior and starbucks is more sophisticated and the rules are different for young black men. You cant sit there and get free wifi, youre loitering. With chikesia, you dont get free utensils we ash trashly give utensils who we want to give them to. All of this, they are assaulting this young ladys character and we have to look at this waitresss questionable past. Waffle house has justified this based on her presentation and we want you to look deeper at that. The last thing ill say, reverend al, we have young white men who have been confirmed as mass murderers get more consideration and more respect from Police Officers than this unarmed black woman. As long as i have we have to stand up for our unarmed black women. I think thats the point, jamil, yes, starbucks stepped up and doing some things and waffle house trying to justify this. When i talk about the utensils compared to the value of chikesia, the police in philly, the police in alabama, seem to have this view that we dont matter, we have no rights. Theres no worth worthiness there of respect and regard. The manager at the waffle house or starbucks did not make the arrest of the boys at starbucks or drag chikesia, it was the police, people that we pay to protect us that see us like that. And thats something i hope does not get lost in this. And weve not heard one word from this president. Hes had larn gits on these issues that have been national all over national in terms of concern and outrage, not one tweet, not one utterance has this president given. Right, of course, i mean, this president serves at the foot of white supremacy, would not expect to hear from him when black people are certainly their dignity is assaulted or if they actually save people from being killed by a white man. Lets address one thing you said there. The response of waffle house reflects the response of this waitress, they use the police to police this space for white people. And i think we need to see as much uproar about ms. Clemon s case as the starbucks case. We will. I will have to leave it there. Thank you all. And lets take a note. This tuesday, i will travel to mobile, alabama with together with Benjamin Crump and chikesia well host a town hall to talk about what we need to do to address this. Up next, may i approach the bench . I have a few private words to the judge whos handling the case of meek mill. Be right back. Tech dont wait for a chip like this to crack your whole windshield. Now for this weeks gotcha, like many this week, i was happy to see that rapper and flil philanthropist had been released for probation violations, his case brought a uniquely National Spotlight to criminal justice reform. I met with mill while he was in prison and last i checked, he was somewhere in philadelphia chilling, pulling for his 76ers and nba playoffs and just generally trying to move on with his life until hes due in court again this june. The same cannot be said for the judge who sent him to prison. Common Pleas Court Judge brinkley, who said this week that despite the pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling that mill be freed on bail, she will not be recusing herself from his case. A little background is order as to why this matters. Mill was arrested in 2007 on drug and gun charges. And it has been judge brinkley presiding over his case ever since. In that time, yes, mill has violated his probation numerous times. But the most recent charges, the ones he was sent to prison for were dropped. Regardless he was sentenced to two to four years in prison by judge brinkley in november. Going beyond the recommendation of even the probation officer and the prosecutor. Her logic, that mill and his infractions had quote, thumbed his nose at her, according to court record. Now his legal team has contended that brinkleys involvement in this case has gone into the realm of the personal. And theyve called for her recusal several times. She of course has refused. But the state Supreme Court ruled this week that because mills arresting officer from 2007 has an alleged history of corruption, that the rapper deserved both a new trial and release on bail. Recommendations endorsed by the District Attorneys Office itself. To you folks at home, please understand im not condoning bad behavior and i hope mill can stay on the right side of the law moving forward but to judge brinkley, i need you to understand that by cosigning people, black men especially in consigning them to more punishment than fits the crime, you arent improving a system, youre cosigning it and you are not improving the system you serve but enabling the worst abusers. And if the District Attorney and state Supreme Court say that mill deserves a new trial, you have to wonder why a professional like yourself would object unless of course it is personal for you. You need him to cosign your new mix tape because the rev has one of his own hitting the street right now, its called i gotcha. Ancestrydna has 5x more detail than other tests. Com experts the movement that has come to be known as black lives matter will mark its fifth anniversary in july. Marking half a decade since the travesty that was the acquittal of george zimmerman. It pushed a group of africanamerican women to launch the now global network, sno synonymous with the next generation of black activism and patrisse cullers details the Life Experience that shaped her activism in the best selling book, when they call you a terrorist, a black lives matter memoir. Joining me now is black lives matter cofounder patrisse cullr ers and president of essence publications. And has a new issue and new 100 left coming out. Let me go to you first, patrisse, the what started as a hash tag when all of us involved with trayvon were totally devastated with the zimmerman acquittal has become a global slogan and movement. And youve written a book and im a voracious reader and i read the book. Your Life Experiences that led to it was compelling. What made you want to tell your story . I mean, even some stuff that a lot of people would not want to say about their upbringing that led you to the point where you became an activist. Thank you so much for having me on the show. Its such an honor. I wrote the book really because i felt black lives matter was n misunderstood, by the time we were called a terrorist organization by former elected appointed officials, i understood that part of the story of black lives matter needed to be told an i wanted to let people know that the experiences that i had with Law Enforcement and with this system of mass incarceration and how impact d me and my family and that black lives matter in some ways starts even before we start d the hash tag, years and years of living in a city that used incarceration as a way to punish my family and my community. Michelle, as the president of essence communication where you not only publish essence magazine and host a largest gathering of blacks in the country, you have known and had to deal with these issues for many years, which is why you do the 100 woke black women being those that deal with this. And when you see and hear patrisses story and see the mobilization of black women from your van teenatage point, is th new and vibrant awakening or are we just seeing a flash that will go away . Good morning, rev. This will not go away. Black women have been leaders for centuries. Not only in our homes but in our communities. And this is the manifestation of generations of women committed to changing our lives, to protecting our children and determining our own future and protecting our rights and its not going away. Its picking up momentum, which is why our editors published the woke 100 list, the second annual, of course, patrisse being featured on the first list last year. It is our opportunity to acknow the women who are out front in this fight from entertainers, to every day women, to politicians, to scholars. Black women have been woke, and are on a mission. I want to show this photo of washington, d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowzer hosted several mayors from around the country featured 15 africanamerican women. We talked at your booksigning. You talked about as black lives matter matured, youre not changing, youre not apologetap. Youre not terrorists and never have been but you have your own way and will work with those who are trying to do what is right. Part of maturity not only on your part but all of our parts is understanding we may have different tactics or ways of getting there, whether it is black women there, or civil rights organizations like the one i had. But we all need to do what we do and not get in each others way. It is something that i really have grown to respect and really respect in you. You are the only one i allow to call me o. G. In public. The only one. Dont try that, michelle. Patrice the only one that can do that. So we are up against the great enemy right now. It is not just trump. We like to call him 45. But it is the entire system that hes created and that hes allowed, both his administration but also the continued violence of black people on the streets by Law Enforcement, by vigilantes. Theres just another shooting in kentucky yesterday, and georgia. And so our fight is not over. In fact, we have to be stronger. We have to be more aligned. We have to be effective and strategic. And black lives matter. And many other organizations with the movement for black lives continue to try to figure out what are the ways that are going to get us closer to freedom. I am excited to be in this conversation, even when its such a painful moment in this country to challenge our ideas about whats going to push us to win. Im interested in victory. And i think, michelle, by the woke 100, which covers everyone from grassroots activists, to mayors, to women in business, shows that we are not a monolith in terms of our style or approaches, but we all are trying to do something. And thats what i think the magic of the woke 100 in essence is. And, frankly, the seminars and symposiums that youve done through the years at the Essence Festival that youll again do in july in new orleans. Yes, reverend sharpton. This is a movement, and the change is critical in our lives. This is a life or death situation. We are dying. We are dying in the streets and hospitals. Our schools are failing. Our wealth is abysmal. So we need to have not only the confers, but the action. And as many people engaged in the movement as possible. Because we will never realize the dream until we create the change thats needed. Well, we are looking forward to the essence 100 coming out. I want to thank you patrice cullers. And i certainly suggest people read her book. Take it from on o. G. Me. Up next, my final thoughts. Stay with us. For all the noses that stuff up around pets. Theres flonase sensimist. It relieves all your worst symptoms including nasal congestion, which most pills dont. And all from a gentle mist you can barely feel. Flonase sensimist. This week i joined ministers led by reverend r. B. Holmes in tallahassee, florida, the state capital of the state of florida, in a rally around restoring Voting Rights to exfelons. Florida is 1 of 4 states that does not allow exfelons who have served their time, fulfilled their obligations to society, to restore their Voting Rights. I feel as those clergy leaders do, that this is a denial of civil and Voting Rights. And we in the next generations after dr. King and others got us the Voting Rights act and was able to reinforce our protection under law of our constitutional right to vote, have to confront this. In the state of florida, 1. 4 million exfelons are affected, black and white. Nationwide, disproportionately blacks are affected. How do you tell people to redeem themselves, reform themselves, become full citizens again, and you can pay taxes but you cant vote . I thought we fought the American Revolution around taxation with no representation. I thought we wanted people to go back and become constructive citizens.
