Is domestic terrorism, using a weapon that should no longer be sold in this country. Can you point to any tangible steps the president has taken . I think the most important thing hes done is to embrace the people of these communities that have been impacted and to condemn this behavior and call it out by name. Its 2020 time. Joe biden kicks off the First Campaign rally of his 2020 bid. I think you will hear him make the case that this is a real moment for americans to stand up and reclaim American Values and treat each other with dignity again. This new biden interview just released, hes talking me too. Almost one in every three victims develop ptsd sometime during their lives. For the first time were seeing real accountability. When men lose their jobs and the reputations as a result of the acts theyve committed, we start to get change. But we have more to do. We talked about his me too remarks, but hes struggled to put together an apology. Beto orourke is rolling out policy on Climate Change. Theres a big longterm goal here, getting the United States to net zero emissions by 2050. Today the Jewish Community in poway, california, is in mourning after this weekends brutal attack. A 19yearold walked in and opened fired killing one and injuring three others. The synagogues Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein who spoken to the president after the attack continued his sermon as he waited for authorities to arrive. A show of strength and resilience in the face of hate and tragedy. I turn around and i see a sight that i undescribable. Here is a young man standing with a rifle, pointing right at me. And i look at him. He had sunglasses on. I couldnt see his eyes. I couldnt see his soul. I froze. I turn around and i saw the children that were playing in the banquet hall. I ran to gather them together. My granddaughter, 4 1 2 years old, sees her grandpa with a bleeding hand and she sees me screaming and shouting, get out, get out. She didnt deserve to see her grandfather like this. No matter how dark the world is, we need to think of light, a little bit of light pushes away a lot of darkness. A lot of light will push away much more. We all need to teach everyone, no matter what religion youre from, we need to do random acts of kindness. But we have the ability to change. A message of hope. The shooting in california is just the latest in a string of attacks at places of worship and is further proof of a stark rise of White Supremacy in the United States and around the world. One month ago, 50 people were killed and another 50 were injured when an australian man opened fire on worshipers in two mosques in new zealand. He posted a manifesto only and livestreamed the attack. In october, 11 were killed and 6 were injured in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. On june 19th, 2017, one was killed and 9 injured when a man plowed his car into worshipers. A man entered the Islamic Cultural Center and opened fire. Nine worshipers were killed at the historical emmanuel ame church in 2015 when a 21yearold white supremacist opened fire. And in august of 2012, a gunman killed six and injured three at a shooting in wisconsin. According to the antidefamation wing, right wing extremists were linked to 50 murders in 2015. Thats a 35 increase from the previous year. We have a very, very serious problem around the world and in this country with this matter. Joining us now, rabbi jill jacobs, director of a Nonprofit Group of jewish leaders focused on focusing jewish rights around the world. You spent the weekend in san diego with rabbi goldsteins family. Its been incredibly challenging. This happening on the sixmonth anniversary of the shooting at the tree of life. When i sat at this desk six months ago, i didnt think we would be back here again talking about this. And to see shabbat desecrated in this way, it is about the most grievance, offensive thing imaginable. That community is strong and what you heard rabbi goldstein say in the clip that you ran before is real, the sense that we are resilient, we are strong and we will not allow these bigots, these cowards to beat us. We spoke to people in the community, we prayed together on saturday night. And they told me, he came in with a gun, didnt know how to operate it, when the parishioners ran at him, he ran away. Six months ago if you thought you wouldnt be here again, what has happened in the last six months to improve the state of things . That is fair to say. The things weve talked about, our leaders leading, to call out when it happens, but every day to reinforce our shared values, the social Media Companies to take steps to detoxify their own platforms. Theres still a lot of work that needs to be done. Were seeing a growth in the United States and around the world in antisemitism and wh. E do you think weve registered this and doing everything we can do when it comes to regulation, and leaders speaking out. Clearly you think this is terrible but are we doing enough as a society . First of all, antisemitism is not new. It exists in every single country. Just last week, we read a line that says in every generation they rise up against us to destroy us. So this is unfortunately the experience jews in every generation and almost every place weve lived. What is new, we have a president whos encouraging white nationalists from the very top. A president who talked about there being very fine people among the nazis in charlottesville. White nationalists are not new, but now they have permission to come out from under the rock that theyve been perhaps living under. They feel newly emboldened and they feel emboldened, unfortunately, to walk into our houses of worship, into synagogues, into black churches and mosques and murder people. To build on what jill just said, white supremacist is on the rise. We track white supremacist. Weve seen an increase in their recruiting, increases in their propaganda events. While the shooting on saturday morning was appropriately well covered, what wasnt covered was an incident in washington, d. C. , white nationalists interrupted the reading. This is not a hotbed of White Supremacy. They feel emboldened, energized because their talking points are finding their way into the talking points of our president and other elected officials at the highest level. Do you attribute any of this to the fact that we are a changing demographic. By 2045, we will have a minoritymajority. We have a president who is pushing the idea, make America Great again, when things didnt look like that. How do we manage the changing demographic of our country and the sentiment that the president talks about so much. This country was founded by immigrants. This country has been rejuvenated by refugees. America is not just a place, its an idea. This is important to realize this. This is nothing new changing demography. Whats new is a vilification of the other. We have a president who is rousing of fear of immigrants, those who are different. Where i see hopes, religious communities are coming together, we have a network of more than 2,000 rabbis and they are reporting to us that their christian neighborings showed u after pittsburgh and this weekend. So were seeing that the religious communities and minority communities that understand that we have to fight White Supremacy together. Communities come out there and say, what do you need . How can we help. And that to some degree overcomes this horribleness. There are weavers, weaving their communities together. Thank you to both of you. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. Just a few hours, joe biden will hold his First OfficialCampaign Rally since announcing his 2020 candidacy for president in pennsylvania. This comes after a Surprising New york times report over the weekend that said in 2015, then president barack obama advised biden not to run for president. The paper quoted biden as acknowledging the president was not encouraging. Biden launched his 2020 campaign anyway even after several women came forward with several conduct allegations against him. Hes apologized and promised to be more mindful and respectful. We dont know why president obama said he shouldnt run. We dont know theres any connection. He may have said, you know you might not win. The showers arent hot enough in the white house. We dont know why. Biden sat down with an interview with Alyssa Milano and spoke about his work addressing violence against women. The interview was recorded before the new allegations were made. In 1991 when i wrote the Domestic Violence act, vault was swept under the rug. It was a family matter. Thats why i hate the freeze Domestic Violence. Its the ugliest form of violence there is. Thousands hours of testimony from women who had been abused by their husbands or boyfriends or acquaintances and we got to see it firsthand in a way that the nation had seen it before when anita hill bravely decided to testify against Clarence Thomas and we saw this issue come straight into everyones living room. We saw how she was treated and how it was a realization in me that we had to change the culture around Sexual Harassment and assault. I started to write the act already, but this just reignited by determination to see to it that we push forward and get something significant down. 81 of the women who are rained or sexually assaulted, reported short time or long term psychological effects and almost one in every three rape victims develop ptsd just like the military does sometime during their lives. Its unconscionable that women have to carry this burden. It affects their daily lives. Im devoted and will continue to devote my life to this issue and im not stopping now. Joining us now is Alyssa Milano, one of the first to use the me too hashtag from which this movement has grown. Great to see you again. Thank you for being with us. Thank you so much for the opportunity. This interview took place before there were recent questions about joe biden and his conduct. Had you known that or had that happened afterwards, would you have talked to him about that . Of course. Absolutely. And i have spoken to him on about that, just not on the record, on the interview. And i can tell you what he said to me privately which i think for me i wish more men in positions of power would say out loud. He said to me im willing to learn, im willing to listen. I didnt realize that i was too affectionate. And i think that this brings up a really important questions that we havent really touched on on me too and often in these moments when were hearing these stories, i think its important to emphasize the difference in these stories. For me the thing that set this story apart from all the other stories, to joe, this was a cultural difference. He was raised in a family that was superaffectionate. For him, this was a realization of, well, everyone sort of grows up in a different household and maybe my actions make other people uncomfortable and it was an acknowledgement. So i think it was important that it came out. And i think that it is important to have men support women and say, i hear you, and i want to learn and make, you know, a change. You and i have had this conversation before. If theres anything that many men have learned in the last few years, we have to be willing to learn, we have to be willing to change. And thats what we im sorry. It changes my interactions as well. Im a very affectionate person. I walked onto set a few weeks ago and i kissed our prop guy on the arm. And i had this moment of, like, maybe that made him uncomfortable whereas that would have never crossed my mind before me too. I think we all have to look at our interactions and proceed cautiously. Joe biden is saying hes willing to learn, its a cultural thing, lets get smarter and better. But for many democrats, theyre saying this is not enough. When you look at it, and youve shown your support for joe biden, you took some criticism, did democrats believe that joe biden stands up against President Trump. When you say morally versus morality, i cant imagine if joe biden made it to a general election, any republican out there would start to push this narrative given the profile that the president has and the many women who have accused him of inappropriate behavior. And hes not said hell get smarter and better. In many cases he said she was too ugly for me to hit on her. I think theres a distinct line between the indiscretions of President Trump which go beyond just his accusations of Sexual Assault and obviously of joe biden makes it on the ticket, joe bidens indiscretions of being overly affectionate. But i want to talk about anita hill and really just say that i know this is an issue that has come up for democrats how Vice President had maybe handled that situation and i can also tell you from my conversations with him, he deeply regrets what happened. He has dedicated much of his career, and i think we cant look at his past mie onically, we have to look at the big picture with coauthoring the violence against womens acts, always being a supporter of the womens right to choose and fighting for women to be on the Judiciary Committee after anita hill. These are all things that are incredibly important to Vice President biden and i think its important that we discuss it and get it out on the table. But none of this i think if the country chooses that joe biden should be the democratic nominee should stop joe biden from being that nominee. And still, there are many progressives or some progressives who say this is not enough. Is that a mistake . Are they not focused on the Overall Mission for democrats which is to defeat donald trump. Michael steel said democrats have a choice, you want to be woke or you want to win. Do you agree with him . I think its a great point. Theres nobody in the world that wants progressive policy to be set in place more than i do. But this primary to me is not about policy. Its about beating trump, period, thats it, end of story. We need to nominee someone that is going to beat trump and bring honesty and integrity and dignity and truth back to the United States of america. Empathy, compassion, all these things that i want to teach my children growing up in this great country. We need someone thats going to represent that to the best of their ability and fight trump. And, you know, i cant its not about whos going to make the best president. Its really about whos going to beat this man, this horrible, horrible president. Alyssa milano, good to see you. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for the opportunity. We appreciate having you here. Alyssa milano is an actor and activist. She got a new podcast out. Her conversation with joe biden drops today. Ruhle. 5 trillion, thats how much it will cost to cover beto orourke new four pillar climate plan. Orourke says Climate Change is, quote, the greatest threat we face which will test our country, our democracy every single one of us. Adding this, quote, we have one last chance to unleash the political will of hundreds of millions of americans to meet this moment before its too late. Lets tick through the framework of his plan. Start cutting pollution on day one and taking executive action to lead on climate. Under this section, orourke pledges to reenter the Paris Agreement and lead the negotiations for a plan for 2030 and years beyond. And 5 trillion for Climate Change. This calls for the funding of infrastructure needed to cut pollution across all sectors and supporting pensions and Health Care Benefits that are owed to energy workers, even protecting those who worked in the coal industry for years to come. Guarantee our net zero emission by 2050. This calls for partnering with cities, states or triableations for achieving this goal. And lastly, part four, defending our communities that are preparing and fighting against extreme weather, overall this pillar calls for better preparations for natural disasters. He wants to invest in the climate readiness and resilience of First Responders and even expand the federal Crop Insurance program to cover additional risks. Thats a lot in it. Joining us now is the founder of our daily planet. Great to see you. Whats your first take on this, 5 trillion, a big price tag, what in your opinion are the winning aspects to this plan . I think its super. Its a great first step. Its much more specific than the Green New Deal which was aspirational. That price tag may make people nervous, but its not as expensive as federal spending. Its really in line with the kind of spending that we need to see to deal with the problem at the scale of the problem. Do you believe that people across the country, we know health care is their number one issue, but those who are suffering, who are not meeting their basic family needs, plut climate as a top priority. Is it something that could help push beto over the line . We hear health care, schools, better wages . I think it is because americans are becoming more and more aware of Climate Change with each storm, with each weather disaster that we have to confront, americans are becoming more and more aware of the problem that it is and it is a way not only to deal with climate, but its a way to solve some of our economic problems. Its a Kitchen Table issue and i think thats why it comes up a lot in places like iowa, New Hampshire and the candidates are hearing about it much more than a lot of the topic that is were obsessed here with in d. C. People are i think hungry for answers, for ideas, for Big Solutions to the big problems, and i do believe that increasingly americans are going to be turning to their candidates and looking for them to have answers on these big problems. When you said its much more specific than the Green New Deal, in terms of candidates, how are they meant to deal with this . Do you ever they come out with a plan as detailed as beto orourke. People have been saying i agree with the Green New Deal. Jay inslee, the governor of washington, is not a Green New Deal guy. I understand and i think the difference here is that it puts some more definitive ideas forward about how to take the next steps. The Green New Deal was very aspirational. It sticks with Carbon Neutrality and cutting in half our Carbon Emissions by 2030. Thats great. That sets a standard for us to all work towards. But then it gets it a little more into the details about reserving the Paris Agreement, going back into the Paris Agreement and what kinds of things we would spend on. So it is a bit more specific. It also doesnt have some of the things in the Green New Deal that have made a lot of democrats anxious about it. So i think its a little bit harder to put some of those bumper stickers like socialist on this plan because it looks a lolt more like the kinds of things we already spend on. We are going to spend whether we want to, whether we plan on it or not, because if you look at the disasters that weve dealt with already and the fact that theyll be increasing, with the infrastructure thats crumbling, these are things we need to do. And Peoples Health care is impacted, their livelihoods are impacted. If we take these positive steps, we can flip something that is a negative now that were just in reaction mode and turn it into a positive. Good to see you. Thank you for joining us. Thanks very much. House judiciary chairman threatening to subpoena barr if he refuses to testify this week about his handlingover the Mueller Report. Hes slated to appear before the House Committee on thursday. But he has concerns about democrats plan to have Committee Lawyers and members question him behind closed doors. Congressman nadler spoke about this standoff a little while. If the attorney general is afraid to subject himself to questions where he can follow up, that may indicate a lack of confidence in his own position. And we have to get to the bottom of these issues. Thats why weve called him in. And its not up to the attorney general to tell the committee how to conduct the business. We will decide what the most effective way of asking questions are. Here to way in is a former federal prosecutor for new york. Jerry nadler says we will decide or what, or what, well subpoena you. Great the white house is clearly blowing their nose with subpoenas. Yes. This is the crux of the issue, how much teeth does one of these congressional subpoenas have . Unfortunately congress is limited as to how they can enforce their subpoenas. There are three ways, the most common is they would file a civil lawsuit that would go in front of a judge to make a decision. But this is going nowhere fast. It could take months or years for a process like that to play out. This is kind of a stalling game. Why should it matter to barr whether Committee Members are asking questions or lawyers are asking questions . Im not sure it should. As weve all seen over the last many congressional hearings that weve watched, having lawmakers ask their five minutes of question isnt necessarily a great way to get to the substance of an issue. Sometimes its grand standing. Now when you have all these people who are planning president ial runs. These may be speeches. Having the staff lawyers who are familiar with these issues, is very practical to actually get answers to this. Barr is going to be called to question about significant issues rating to the Mueller Report including why d doj decided that muellers findings did not equal the crime of obstruction. These staff lawyers may be well versed on these. So i think the staff lawyers would be in a good position. Christine blasey ford was willing to be questioned by a lawyer. These people complain that its too politicalized and youre doing this for sound bites. If lawyers or staffers were conducting the questioning, theyre not going to politicalize it, theyre going to ask specific things to try to get specific answers. Its still a political proceeding. Im pretty sure theyre going to you dont think a staffer is going to politicalize it. They grand stand the way i think thats the key. They will actually understand it and theyll be able to dig in a little bit more than the members actually would. It would be interesting to see if it happens. Thank you. Good to see you. Coming up mayor Pete Buttigieg, he might have a problem with nonwhite voters, in the latest polling he only has 2 of their support. Thats his challenge. Hes looking for a solution. Please call them at this number. Tell them to get going. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. Right now here in new york, the head of the National Action network and msnbc host al sharpton is interviewing 2020 president ial candidate Pete Buttigieg has he steps up his outreach to a key block of voters, africanamerican. A new poll shows just 2 of nonwhite voters support Pete Buttigieg. Thats behind joe biden and bernie sanders. Heres buttigieg speaking to sharpen just a few moments ago. We got good houses in south bend that are maybe 30,000. The bank wont its almost like a weird red line, the bank cant lend on it because the bank cant get their money back. The reason we did that was because minority leaders and neighbors were asking us to do it. The biggest complaint they had was what took you so long. Just give us a overlay of what Pete Buttigiegs problem is with africanamericans, is it a problem, they have no idea who he is . They dont like him or dont know him. I think its a combination of both. Those folks will say its one of the midwestern towns that are still plagued with the issues of segregation, but folks dont know who he is. There are some audiences who were excited about his fresh new face, but black voters dont know him yet and once they hear his message, they could be won over. But i think hes going to need a little more than that. Meeting with al sharpton is a good start. Hes tapped into the voting block, but when you Start Talking about these Younger Voters who want to be excited, who came out of age during the obama era, they want to hear not just a plan, but you can dec deconstruct some of the issues that you care about. Very few people knew who pete was and he doesnt have much of a track record because hes a young guy. There are these controversial statements he made in 2015 where he was trying to mend the wounds between the police and the black community and he referenced all lives matter. You need to know better that all lives matter was a thats not it doesnt mean all lives matter. Was his apology accepted. Because he said something that maybe is below what a political leader should, but he said something that many, many people have. He said i said all lives matter and when i realized how insensitive it was, i never said it again. Some politicians are never wrong. He stepped up to the plate. He said i stumbled over the language. I understand the historic trauma and the structures of White Supremacy, i understand what it means. He was forthright with it and i think it may have been accepted to some degree. But folks dont know him. Hes going to have do more than eating Fried Chicken at silvias. When you look at the police department, only 10 of the Police Officers are black or hispani hispanic, theres a problem there. Theyve spoken just a moment ago about criminal justice reform. I think we have that sound. It opens up an really possibility around restorative process. If you want your Voting Rights restored ahead of schedule, you ask for some sort of reconciliation. Pete buttigieg was one last week who was asked should felons who are in jail, should they have the right to vote. He said no, while theyre encars rated, but rpd after the fact, it should be a different story. For many people across this country, especially from marginalized communities, the reason they were in the penitentiary in the first place was dubious at best. To dismisses them, you can get into the policy whether it makes sense or not. But the idea that youre saying lets restore these rights, but youre saying their vote doesnt matter, comparing whats happening to black and brown young people to the Boston Marathon bomber is almost insulting. So far, hes tripping a little bit. But hes growing. Did the passing on the first step act, does that help President Trump with nonwhite voters . I dont think so. Its gutless. Its a nice gesture. Take the kardashian wests of the world to come in to the white house. We heard the way he spoke about chicago and we hear the language he used in describing black and brown people in particular that i dont think folks will fall for that. One thing he has going for him, 13 of black men voted for him he speaks and he doesnt care. Hes offthecuff. Hes breaking from the mold. Except hes lied 10,000 times according to the washington post. When you speak and you dont care theres a problem. The issue is when you think about this toxic masculinity, hes going out there and speaking like a man. But when you pull back the layers its false and hes stumbling over every policy issue thats yes cant win over other folks. Men can be strong and tough but they are great listeners and not a bully. They met with boeing executives for the First Time Since two fatal crashes that toledo a worldwide grounding of the best selling jet. Shares of the Company Worth 214 billion have lost 10 of their value since the march crash. Heres what boeing ceo had to say at that conference earlier today. Its our responsibility to deliver and service airplanes that are safe to fly and can be safely flown by every single one of the professional and dedicated pilots all around the world. We own it. Today marks six months since the lion air flight accident. We know they have been working on a software update. Where do they stands on that for the millions of people every day who fly the friendly skies . Reporter the freethrow shooter have been grounded. All of the contingent upon boeing pushing out an update to the antistall software. They expect the final test flight within the next week or two. Then submit this for formal faa approval. Around may 23rd the faa will be meeting with regulators from around the world to discuss how they are going to systematically approve this plane to fly again. Were probably, therefore, looking at the end of may, maybe into june before the plane is approved to fly, but then you got to train all the pilots on the new system and that could take weeks or even months. So we really are looking at the mid to late summer period before the max is flying again. You have been reporting on a passenger and a pilot confidence problem on the 737 max. Thats obviously something they have to overcome. Absolutely. Listen, i talked to the head of the pilots union for American Airlines who stressed there is a pilot confidence problem not to mention passengers who are reluctant to fly the max even when ice certified to fly again. The question is how does boeing regain the confidence of the flying public. Not just the pilots. The pilots you go through training and encourage them and they one the new system. But regaining the public trust could take time. You may see situations where passengers for the first time will check to see what kind after plane am i supposed to be flying on to take my family on vacation and optout of that particular plane. You know, the president suggested a couple of weeks ago boeing should rebrand the max call it Something Else going forward. I heard that comment and suggestion from others in the Airline Industry as well. Thank you for covering this for us. Tom costello for us covering this story for us. The question will be almost similar to social media. Theres public mistrust and outrage but is it going to truly impact who is flying, where they are flying.
