Anything like that . Im not a bad person. Why would he attack me . Good morning, everyone. Lets get right to it. Im tamron hall coming to you live from the msnbc headquarters. Breaking news right now, it is now official. President elect donald trump announcing his picks for three key jobs in his administration. According to a press release just out in the last hour, senator Jeff Sessions of alabama the first senator to endorse trump during the campaign has now been selected for the job of attorney general. Congressman mike pompeo of campus for a cia director and Lieutenant General mike flynn as National Security advisor. Amid breaking news, Vice President elect pence arrived at trump tower in the past hour. Weve got a great number of men and women and great qualifications that have come forward to serve this new administration and im just humbled to be a part of it. Our agency teams have begun to arrive at agencies in washington, dc this morning, beginning with what were very confident will be a smooth transition to serve to move this country forward to make America Great again. A source telling nbc news that the president elect is considering mitt romney, one of trumps harshest critics during the campaign to be secretary of state. The two will be meeting this weekend after that long bitter war of words during the campaign. Donald trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as from Trump University. He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, mitt, drop to your knees, he would have dropped to his knees. Doesnt have the temperament or personal qualities to be a great president. The guy choked like a dog. Peter alexander joining us from washington bureau, joined the Trump Campaign from the start, katy tur. A list of people that weve learned mike flynn does not have to go through a confirmation hearing, the other two do. Absolutely and i wouldnt expect that theyre not going to be confirmed. Remember, we have a republican congress. Senator sessions had been serving for quite some time and relationships there and even though he had issues being confirmed for a judgeship back in the 80s, this is not the same scenario we see right now. In terms of pompeo, hes somebody well respected in the Intelligence Community and i was speaking with a source about him, a source that is a high ranking official in the Intelligence Community and said hes probably fine. A harvard lawyer, a west point graduate but no real background in a leadership role but somebody they do believe that they can work with. You can see right here, a threeterm congressman from kansas on the intelligence and Benghazi Committees and made his name on the Benghazi Committee one of the hardest people to go after Hillary Clinton during those hearings and also graduated first in his class from west point. So he is somebody that is being seen as a slightly more traditional for donald trump to choose. Obviously, theres a lot of disappointment around that he did not end up choosing mike rogers for cia who had initially been in the running for was purged from the Transition Team along with all of the folks that Chris Christie brought in. So pompeo is not necessarily a choice thats going to cause much controversy. Sessions might cause some controversy with democrats but theres an expectation that he will get confirmed. Flynn, on the other hand, does have a lot of controversy surrounding him. Conflicts of interest and questions about dealings overseas. A retired u. S. General in the army and former Agency Director and recipient of four bronze star medals and well respected for the early work he did in defense but after that, a number of sources in the intelligence world called to tell me that the problem with general flynn is even though he was great on the ground, great colonel, the larger his role got, his aperture didnt. He wasnt able to expand his thinking to a broader sense and worry about a narrow view of the middle east and siding so easily with russia. They dont know what his views on china are. They say hes a hothead, somebody who was very kwek quic replace those who were critical with sycophants on the team so the Intelligence Community is not feeling so great about right now especially because he will have the very close ear of donald trump. Hes somebody that would have a hard time getting confirmed in the senate, yet hes going to be basically taking on one of the most important roles in the administration. So a bit of a mixed bag today. Lets bring in the conversation about mitt romney. Some believe its supposed to be a balance of some of the men that have now been confirmed whether romney gets the job or not. It is seen as trump open to adversaries. I think thats right if you think of this as the potential for a team of rivals, remember, president obama in 2008 picked his then rival Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. This wouldnt potentially be too dissimilar, although the language between mitt romney on the campaign as you just played a short time ago was incredibly fierce. Whats notable here is that it would send the sort of a reassuring signal to some people concerned about some of Donald Trumps picks to this point. Steve bannon, mike flynn, Jeff Sessions, this sort of runofthemill people close to donald trump and closest folks who support the trump ideology as it were. Whats interesting is what he does as he goes forward with some of the other names for positions like secretary of state. How real is this . Unclear but definitely sends the message that donald trump is willing to open up his eyes to a variety of different opinions on this. There are some potential contradictory statements, sop c some conflicts of views and the largest geopolitical foe during one of the heatest debates in 2012, compared to donald trump much more cozy as it were, a little bit more comfortable in the way that he embraces a relationship with russia. Any indication that democrats are being considered for anything or people outside of the loyal band that followed donald trump sans mitt romney . Mike flynn is a registered democrat even though opinions are a lot more similar to a lot of republicans on Foreign Policy but more broadly, we have top aides with a series of other individuals coming to b bedminister, new jersey, and michelle reid, former washington, dc school and could be a name with potential secretary of education and had a fierce back and forth, of course, when she was here in washington with the Teachers Union and these are some folks that may not necessarily fall on the same partisan roles that some people would think or may not always be aligned with donald trump and their thinking. Quickly, katy, will we see more names rolled out with positions over the weekend . Potentially today but not so clear on how their timing is going to be and this weekend, certainly. The difference were seeing right now, theyre really breaking from tradition when past president select appear in the News Conference and were not seeing that with donald trump and were getting basically an email confirming these very big titles and these are very big titles. So it just remains to be seen what their timeline is and obviously working very hard and quickly behind the scenes. But we dont know exactly when theyll come out and make major announcements. Katy, thank you. Peter, you as well. And more for mitt romney, let me bring in sarah, ormer advisor for romney during the 2012 president ial campaign. Thank you so much for joining us, sarah. Lets quickly play for people who forgot it, i dont know how you do, the back and forth between trump and romney. The bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, thet. Donald trump tells us hes very, very smart. Im afraid when it comes to Foreign Policy, he is very, very not smart. And donald trump admires Vladimir Putin. At the same time, called george w. Bush a liar. That is a twisted example of evil trumping good. Sarah, you know governor romney. How has he walked that back if to take the position . I think a lot of republicans believe that we now have the congress. We have 31 governorships, etc. So we need to come together to show the American People what conservative policies need to be about. I think its smart for donald trump to look at a wide array of people for every job. Its politically smart as well because it means that youre having these people come together and say, like, heres what i can do. Heres how i can help. Heres my voice that i can lend to this administration. You know, lincoln and William Seward was his secretary of state. They had been fierce rivals before that. So theres also a Great American history to having your secretary of state be a political rival as well. As we saw with barack obama and Hillary Clinton. The political rivals and then someone saying youve admired Vladimir Putin calling you a con artist saying that youre playing the American Public for suckers. And we can go on and on into your point. I mean, wrote an amazing book about assembling rivals. So we know thats not impossible. Clearly. But these are very pointed remarks from mitt romney that went on for a very long time. Which would make it all the administer pow more powerful. I think in the end, donald trump looked at a lot of people for a lot of positions which i think is politically very smart so i dont know that mitt romney is about to be named secretary of state but absolutely, if he did, i think its a powerful message to the country of, yep, elections are elections but now we start governing. Theyre supposed to sit down over the weekend in new jersey. If thats the case, and youre governor romney, do you instantly say, about that Vladimir Putin, i didnt mean you admired him . I am sure they both have a lot to talk about in the meeting but i dont expect on the one hand for donald trump to apologize to mitt romney and vice versa but expect him to say that was a Heated Campaign and said a lot of things but lets move forward and talk about what we can do for the country and how we can show americans that conservative values and conservative Foreign Policy will actually work and what could the two of us do together to show that . Quickly here, does it come off as gamesmanship that the American Public turn eye on media, polls, trying to understand what happened during this election. Does this come off and ill use common language, as phony . Sorry, as phony . Yeah. No, i think that, again, you have republicans that had a very intense primary and then we didnt really come together during the general election as much as the democrats did. You never saw democrats criticizing Hillary Clinton through email scandals or wikileaks. They really stuck together as a very tight knit group with no criticism and then the republicans much more open to say, heres my policies and how we move forward and i think this is a very healthy process during the transition and during this time to, again, show that conservatives or republicans, that everyone can say, like, the election is over. Now were going to make this work and make it work really well so that we show the conservative policies can work. Thank you so much, we greatly appreciate you joining me. Thank you. Thank you. Donald trump picking for National Security advisor. Lieutenant general flynn is a decorated retired general whos no stranger to controversy on both sides of the aisle and nbc White House Correspondent Kristen Welker gives us an inside look to his history. Retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn is a selfdescribed maverick who like president elect donald trump favors Straight Talk over political correctness. Flynn ran the Defense Intelligence agency from 2012 to 2014 served as a top intelligence advisor in iraq to general Stanley Mcchrystal but its his loyalty that was a critical part of trumps decision to pick him as National Security advisor. And what we have in this country is a deficit of leadership. Donald trump brings in a strategic leadership, a sense of who we are as america. Reporter Lieutenant General flynn not without controversy. He recently raised eyebrows among those in the military community who usually stay out of politics. Sounding at times like a candidate himself. I have called on Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race because she put our nations security at extremely high risk. Reporter flynn had been accused of mishandling classified material. Allegations he denies and theres questions about his management style. In 2014, flynn was fired as the dia director, some u. S. Officials say ousted because hes contentious and flynn publicly denied that and the real reason, too tough on islamic rchl. Theres a disease inside of this islamic body. Its like cancer and it has metastasized. Reporter inflaming tensions with like, fear of muslims is rational. Some argue hes too cozy with russia pointing to a february trip in moscow to spend time with russian president , Vladimir Putin. This is a guy who is, you know, had cozy dinners with putin. This is the guy who the Intelligence Community is temperamentally unsuited for the job but possibly compromised. Joining me, former u. S. Ambassador to russia is Michael Mcfall and msnbc contributor. I just learned and apparently you just found out last friday that you were banned, youve been banned from russia . Well, yeah. I just found out recently but i think i was on the list, the sanctions list from 2014. Remember, after russia annexed crimea and supported separatists in the eastern ukraine, our government put some very top russian officials on a sanctions list. And the russians reciprocated and did it in a nonpublic way. Lets talk about flynn. What concerns you in his new position and we know, he doesnt have to go through a confirmation hearing. This will be his expected. What concerns you first . I know general flynn a bit and worked with him in the government. What concerns me is some of the things that he said on the campaign trail. Particularly saying that we should fear muslims as a very disturbing comment and shows a lack of judgment that he travelled to russia, was paid a speaking fee by a Russian Organization connected to the russian government, russia today which is the propaganda wing of the kremlin and attended the tenth anniversary of russia today to celebrate the pr propaganda wing and sat down next to president putin, bad judgment in my view. And knows the government, worked in the government, knows what the interagency proocess and is compared to others. I take some comfort in that. General flynn said with my colleague Stephanie Ruhle about Vladimir Putin. Lets play that. Vladimir putin. Someone you respect. Someone who kills journalists, invaded crimea. Is that a man you respect . Stop it with that kind of stuff. I mean stop it with what, sir . Stop it with what . How youre describing a leader in the world thats actually, that we have to deal with. Were dealing with them right now. We have to deal with russia. We have to deal with russia. We cannot make russia an enemy. What do you make of his words that some believe make islam or muslims an enemy and not Vladimir Putin . You know, im troubled by it. I hope hell rethink assumptions. When a region annexed territory of a neighbor, thats an alarm thing and said hes not an enemy, thats a very disturbing thing that hasnt happened in europe since world war ii. President obama working with the entire Nato Alliance was right to respond to that action by sanctions and strengthening nato and when he says things like that, it makes people worried that he might not be as tough on russia as we need to be right now. Thank you so much for your time. We greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Lets turn now to the soulsearching going on with the Democratic Party and disappointing election day loss even in traditional blue states. Senator Bernie Sanders elected just this week to the democratic leadership in the senate now calling for a new direction as he addressed a capitol hill rally to promote what they refer to now as the peoples agenda. When you lose the white house to the least popular candidate in the history of america, when you lose the senate, when you lose the house and when twothirds of govern nors are republican, its time for a new direction. Pause the campaign. Let Hillary Clinton lose and new back with something that we heard essentially him say over the time he was campaigning against her. A little bit of a renaissance for Bernie Sanders here. I think theres a lot more interest in what he has to say now that she lost than if she won this election. The reality is that a lot of the people that ended up voting for donald trump, a lot of these states that were the quote, unquote blue wall that fell are states that in the primary voted for Bernie Sanders. They did not vote for Hillary Clinton and he talked a lot, i covered him for month on the campaign trail and talked a lot about the same themes that donald trump has hit on and also talked about how he said, hey, i came from a White Working Class background and the fact that the people that i grew up with are now with donald trump is unacceptable. To me, it shouldnt be this way. But this was not an argument that Hillary Clinton really put at the forefront of her campaign but focused on a different message and stronger together, talking about bringing people together. But without kind of repeatedly emphasizing the economic message that so aggressively broke through. Congressman. Its going to confuse the heck out of us, paul ryan, tim ryan. Nonetheless, this is formerly announced he will challenge minority leader speaker pelosi. Let me play what he said. I love nancy pelosi and shes a friend of mine, a mentor, our family, but weve got to talk about how we move forward but i think everybody bears some responsibility and if we want to pick up 30 or 40 seats, northern florida, michigan, wisconsin, this big blue firewall fell, i think we need someone to go to all these districts and promote the Economic Vision that we need in order to get those trump voters back in our camp. What are we hearing from pelosi in response to this new blood, new energy coming at her . Nancy pelosi said she had twothirds of the caucus without having to ask for any votes but i think that its still a long shot that she will get unseated by tim ryan. But i do think having talked to him and other members of congress over the the last wela so that the division with her and the other leaders, all been there for years. Pelosi held this position since 2002 and theres so much frustration within the caucus among younger members who feel like theres no opportunity to advance and i think the flip side of that as well. You heard tim ryan articulating that a little bit. Theres concern that the leadership of the party is the party of the coasts. Its here on the east coast, the west coast. Concern that nancy pelosi will be a San Francisco liberal with no connection to the middle of the country and lose more seats in 2018 and the more aggressive way of saying is that they want somebody to walk into a union hall and hang with the people and theres a lot of layers to that kind of way of looking at it but whats going on right now. Kasie hunt, thank you very much. Coming up, new developments in the lawsuit over Trump University. Well go live to san diego for the latest on that legal battle and it is moving forward. Lawyers for president elect trump reportedly nearing a settlement according to the New York Daily News reports, the contents of which have been confirmed by a source said to be familiar with the negotiations and the hearing scheduled for this afternoon in san diego is expected to focus on a request from the defense for the postponement of the trial. The trial scheduled to begin a week from monday and trumps attorneys argued in a motion filed last saturday that the allconsuming preparations for the inauguration should be the leks pri president elects priority and found by some Trump University students alleged they were. Others reported a positive experience and Msnbc Steve Patterson joins me now, what are you hearing on the ground is the likely path forward here . Reporter first of all, give kudos to katy tur to get the information in the daily news article confirmed. If it is true, trump would pay out between 20 million and 25 million in a settlement to the plaintiffs. This is a big shock coming into today and from minute one, president elect trump adamant about pursuing this thing. His attorneys only recently saying that the transitionary period, that the 70 or so odd days is so important they want to postpone from 28th until after january 20th. After the inauguration. Essentially, after president elect trump becomes president trump. The plaintiffs, meanwhile, former Trump University students have been feeling like theyve had a pretty good case this whole time. A lot of them Senior Citizens wanting to get the trial on the road as soon as possible. What seems to be in line with this new information is the perspective of judge Gonzalo Curiel and admonished, said maybe shouldnt be on the trial in the first place because of his heritage. Hes been pushing for an agreement or some sort of settlement wean tbetween the tw parties between minute one saying he hopes president elect trump getting on the business of basically running the country and the biggest irony is the precedent for a sitting president to face the suit with given testimony with paula jones versus bill clinton and after their relevancy, attacking trump in some way. Thank you very much with the latest there and donald trump already taking credit for saving manufacturing jobs. Lets bring in anchor and correspondent ali velshi. Pivoting past this here, or looking ahead, where do you see this new administration trying to move forward and take it . Lets talk about cars for a second. You know, we have high wages in the United States, higher in some parts than others so you see a lot of nonamericans go to the south and nissan is one of those and i spoke to the ceo of nissan and reno, myths bitsubis. And heres what he told me. Donald trump promised to bring manufacturing jobs and back in the rust belt because of it. Youre in the manufacturing business. How do you bring manufacturing jobs so if you want more cars, how to make it more competitive to be in the United States versus over options . Thats it. About competitiveness and thats not about the tcost or infrastructure or training. And competitiveness is incentives to the technologies. This is where competitiveness is. So lets talk about those areas. The things that donald trump says hes going to do. He does talk about defense for instance, a lot. Or towns heavy on defense are celebrating and more recruitment and marines, military vehicles or another thing he talked about was infrastructure so youre going to see building in jobs or construction or building or plumbing, those types of things. And finally, both infrastructure and defense require engineers so youll see job gains in engineers whether its mechanical or civil or Aerospace Engineering and the Electrical Engineering and if this infrastructure and defense spending goes into place, there might be some jobs created. There are some Agreement Regarding infrastructure. The Current Administration wanted to see infrastructure. President obama tried to get through. The republicans were not cooperative and defense is a different thing. This is the problem. He wants to spend a lot or infrastructure, or cant find creative ways to fund defense. Thats tax dollars. Thank you very much. Well turn from the incoming president to the current commander in chief, president obama leaving germany for peru earlier this morning. Hell be joined as part of the Asia Pacific Economic summit and before leaving berlin, met with leaders of france, spain, germany and the United Kingdom and urging european counterparts to continue to work with the incoming Trump Administration. Senior White House Correspondent Chris Jansing joining me now from berlin. A lot going on there and the same tone from the very beginning of this tour, convincing other leaders that they will be able to work with trump in some capacity. Reporter yeah, im told the message has been consistent publicly an priva lly and priva meetings intense because of the future of what happens in syria, russia, isis. I want to talk to somebody who knows a lot about how europe is reacting to the election of donald trump and thomas is the anchor here at zdf network and formerly at the george w. Bush white house as a correspondent for zdf and i looked at your web site this morning and the headline said the have no fear visit. Whats the message there . Well, clearly, president obama tried to calm everybodys nerves in europe and the european allies are pretty nervous right now, theyre worried because what they heard during the campaign by donald trump is stuff they dont like at all. Trump was critical of how nato works and was critical of merkels refugee policy, but he was critical of free trade, protectionist, isolationist and everything, but trendily towards Vladimir Putin. That is stuff that does not go down well here in europe so people dont know what theyll deal with and worried and clearly, obama, if hes tried to calm their nerves, not sure whether it will work. I just had an opportunity to have a long exclusive interview with the u. S. Ambassador here and with his wife and inundated with calls and connected with both the german American Community here and what do you think the word on the street here is in germany and across europe outside of the halls of power . Outside of the hall of power was quite clear, everybody expected Hillary Clinton to win, everybody was hoping she would win and really not expecting donald trump to win. What are his ideas . Its difficult to figure out. Theres some insecurity, a lot of germans, for instance, dont like insecurity very much because they feel that these are insecure times anyway. So if you have somebody down in the white house that you dont know how to deal with, it could be problematic. You also see that in the reaction that the german elected politicians have. Very unusual when you have some of the foreign secretaries calling mr. Trump a hate preacher. Very undiplomatic and very clear, very outspoken and normally dont hear that. Those are signs there is something up that people are not comfortable with. Reporter thank you very much. And the next senate fears that have to be calmed at the apec summit that will start tomorrow. When you lose the white house in a campaign against a gentleman who i believe will enter the white house as the least popular candidate in the history of this country, when you lose the senate, lose the house, twothirds of state governments, i think it is time for the Democratic Party to reassess what it stands for and where it wants to go. Joining me now, nbc news senior Political Editor mark murray. What do you see is the big headline going into the sunday morning shows here . Its all about the transition so far for donald trump and of course, now we do have the new names that are going to be the first, Jeff Sessions to head up the Justice Department for donald trump and end up having Michael Flynn and the interNational Security advisor, michael pompeo, cia and other names we end up getting will certainly be but what is fascinating so far that everyone appointed has been a trump loyalist and well see if that trend continues for the picks ahead. Already, you have for example, the naacp blasting senator sessions, his records and the campaign itself, but we know that it appears these confirmations will go the way that donald trump would like but it cannot be ignored some of these serious concerns about these individuals. And it seems like people say, well, you know, republicans control everything, this will be something that they can take advantage of. I think well see fireworks when it comes to Jeff Sessions, hes been the democratically elected senator from alabama and judgeship because of allegations about racial insensitivity and controversial comments he ended up making which will all be fodder and tamron, you and i know, these confirmation hearings, everything is fair gap game. He needs republicans to stay in line but clearly, this pick as well as other ones will be really, really explosive hearings. What about it shassues of cot of interest, mostly surrounded around Donald Trumps soninlaw but his daughter ivanka attended a meeting with japans prime minister, thats raised some more eyebrows. To me, the biggest thing is we dont have a clear plan for how Donald Trumps business is going to go forward if hes president and meets with the Vice President of japan and daughters by his side who represents trump businesses. We still dont end up having anything like that and thats a big story going forward. Greatly appreciate it. Then the news broke with donald trump picking senator Jeff Sessions as his choice for attorney general. Im sure when he wrote a new era in the Justice Movement, you did not see that happen. How did that tackle . Okay. I was imaging a differ 2017 and 2018 than perhaps we were handed. What is remarkable, during the obam years, while the antiprotesters have been frustrated the department of justice has worked a lot on issues of police reform, the duty investigations, whether in baltimore and ferguson, these investigations, including that there is and has been some discrimination. Thats something that Donald Trumps Justice Department does not have to do. Even more specifically, my colleagues and i have to work on this to track Police Shootings. After that, the department announced they were gentleman to do this, themself. Then what happens, he was able to keep that front. After years of the energy or these conversations, he will lead those potential gains. Again, we will talk about counting, literally, how many are there and how can we have this conversation without that type . The New York Times review says he spoke, hes valuable for so many reasons. He swirled around the question of why for Barack Obamas presidency, so little has seemed to improve on the racial front. Here we could no Vice President two people more extreme t. Circle around them more extreme. The b. E. T. Aired obama thank you with all of the rappers and hiphop stars and someone tweeted out, well never see that again. Thats an next doetdal music. What about real life . Of course, its hard to look at the election of donald trump and the people he has around him, who he is bringing in, not see its some form of white racial backlash and historically, you know, this is what we do as a country. Whether there is a moment of racial progress, especially for black and brown people. There is almost immediately a monumental backlash. We saw this with construction, with jim crowe the civil rights movement, its surprising we are seeing after the election of the first black president. I think that when we think about the protesters, what the book tries to do is tell the stories of many young activists who have been in the street, who have been driving. So many of them were inspired by barack obama and disappointed by his inability to solve all of these problems. So im as surprised now to see this type of backlash from the electorate, from others who are frustrated. Thank you so much for joining us. I can listen to you all day long wind chill reout of time.
