It with patience. They talk about rescuing trade the press did not support the free trade deal. I have not talked to him or Jake Sullivan about that. Ly venture to do that and see if i can get more on it for you. Thank you, everyone. Jen saki with the Daily White House press briefing. A couple headlines, still deflected on impeachment. The press secretary has been asked numerous times where he stands on impeachment. The trial of former President Trump and she is still saying that is up to the senate. Also making some news on harriet tubman, and a lot of news on the coronavirus. Briefings three times a week and saying what they inherited was worse than they could have imagined and she expects the president , joe biden, to be briefed a lot more than his predecessor was. Good afternoon, im katy tur. It is 11 00 out west, 2 00 p. M. In the east. And President Joe Biden is beginning his new aggressive plan to fight the pandemic, he is playing catch up with everything that the Trump Administration did not doo. Restrigss put in place to stop new more contagious strains from coming here. President biden also took the restrictions a step further. From south africa, because of another potentially more dangerous mutation that emerged there. That very mutation prompted moderna to say they will add a booster to their vaccine. Six days into his presidency, high profile members of the house telling us just how thard will birdie to get the pandemic under control. There was covid19 deniered in Donald Trumps inner circle at the white house. And that someone was feeding the president parallel data. Dr. Anthony fauci said that trump would criticize him for accurately conveying the science instead telling him to be more positive about the virus. And now the new cdc director says she has no idea how many available doses of the vaccine this country has. Again, the new director saying she inherited so little investigation from the last administration, that she cannot determine what our current supply is. Moments ago, as you just saw, against saki acknowledging the challenging of the new administration. The confusion that we acknowledged there is some confusion, speaked to a larger problem, which is what were inherits from the Prior Administration which is worse than we could have imagined. Were eyes wide open, including the president , with the knowledge that were not walking into a circumstance where there will be a concrete assessment or plan presented to us when we walked in, and there wasnt. This weekend there was 125,000 new cases of covid reported, that is one in every 13 of us. Dr. Azar, i want to start with you on this, it is just extremely frustrating to hear what we have been hearing in the last few days from members of this administration about what was going on behind the scenes of the last administration and the idea that we dont know how much vaccine we currently have how is that possible . You know, as i listen to all of this, i think i wish i could provide you with more clarity about how and why we got to where we are. But i will certainly tell you it makes my job easier to answer the question where are the vaccines and where are there now more shots in the arms . What i will say, you know, more broadly is that i think it has been the correct assumption that, you know, all of the credit that we need to give to the cdc, the nih, and the fda for getting these manufactured and approved, but that is where the effort stops. Thats not just in their words from this afternoon. It is about the distribution and not all of those fazes were thought about and planned for prior to this administration ending. Phil, we kept hearing a defensive tone about what they had been doing behind the scenes. Is this just politics at play here . What can you tell us about what you knew about what was going on behind the scenes during the trump term . You know, katy, what im hearing, what the the tone and you eluded to it directly was always this, you know, its going to be okay. We have enough. Americans will be able to roll up their sleeves and everything, and the American People were really mislead to put it mildly. It doesnt help governors and it doesnt help hospital administrators. I can speak from our own experience how frustrating and how challenging it is to not know when the next doses are available. That needs to stop. We need full transparency, full accountability. If you dont have an answer, tell us you dont have the answer. And if it is not something that is nice to hear about to our ears, that is okay, we can handle it, just be honest. Phil, what about you on that same question . Yeah, katie, we heard month after month from officials talking about the success of their Vaccine Development and distribution plan. It wasnt until the biden team took over that the reality of how slow this country has been to get the vaccine administered has become clear to people and it just goes to the point that dr. Debra burkes made yesterday, she said the president was getting a faulty data stream and was being mislead about some of the facts and intentionally trying to spin a positive impression. As we can all see and experience around the country in the last few months, it is not under control, its not contained, and its getting worse. It sounds like this administration is pretty frustrated themselves. They are doing a lot of work to message around that and to lower expectations. What are you hearing from them about their ability to get a handle right right now on the response to this virus going forward. This is something that we were covering closely. The degree to which the incoming team was unable to get a full and clear picture of what they would be inheriting in a short amount of time. Now they have access to that and were hearing very candidly very real concerns about the vaccine. There is three days a week public covid briefings. You heard two things from the president in his inaugural address. One is concern about disinformation and his vow to always be straight with the American People. They believe that is power. Having a direct line of conversation with the American People about the changes their facing is a critical step, they believe, in helping to empower the public to make them feel part of what is a national crisis. It also serves to help with the effort of moving this rescue plan. Yetting a Public Health core to be part of that distribution. We heard them doing two contra dictory things. There is an urgency to acting quickly. You heard her reluctant to pin a deadline on the bipartisan package moving forward. That is when we have a cliff here. They have other packages starting to expire. The president is including himself, and having those briefings as well to make clear that the direness is a critical step as well. Phil, in using the defense production act, how is the administration hoping that will speed up supply of vaccine or speed up the response to this virus . How exactly will it be used . Well, im not sure exactly from a technical standpoint how it will be used, but the goal is not only to produce more vaccine doses quickly, but to have that administered at more sights around the country. As we see in a lot of areas and rural areas and states there are long backlogs of people authorized to get the vaccine. Invoking them is one way to quickly scale the sites and the number of equipment being used and the number of doses that are available. Dr. Azar, this news from moderna that theyre adding a boother to their vaccine to combat the variant, how does that work . It is coming as no surprise that this is occurring. But we are, hour, a little bit more alarmed by the number and combination of mutations, as you mentioned in the variant. When they studied the current effectiveness against the variant it is six fold less effective than to the original strain. The good news is that both pfizer and moderna are able to change their vaccines rather quickly. The temptation s that it will have a similar crosssuit any. We want to see that it can elicit a robust response. We dont have to be as broadly concerned but they basically said, both Companies Said they can ramp up, produce, and have a new vaccine available in about six weeks. I did hear that the booster could take a year to come. I think it remains to be scene how quickly a boother will be made available to those that already received the original formulation. Thank you for joining us today. Thank you as always. Still ahead, alex padilla takes us to his hometown, a new ground zero for covid. Go online to transfer your services in about a minute. Get started today. A dramatic step forward today in the trial against donald trump. The lead impeachment manager will read the article on the floor. Word of another senate retirement. Senator rob portman says he will not run for reelection opening the door for another possible vote to convict the former president. Senator wills be sworn in as trial jurors tomorrow. The waiting is the hardest part. The trial wont get started until the week of february 8th. Joining me now is diana degette. Chief Justice Roberts is not expected to preside over the trial. And right now it will be senator leahy. What do you make of that . How do you feel about that . It is news to me that you say that. So were just planning to try our case. Of course 100 senators are also jurors and the managers. I imagine senator leahy is the most senior and that is why they did that. Does that open the case to arguments that the trial is not fair it if there is a democrat presiding over it. Theyre saying we should not have a trial but the precedent is clear that you can have an impeachment trial after someone leaves office. Im sure well hear all kinds of arguments. I know the trial will be fair. We have the president telling supporters to come to washington on january 6th. He is telling them to come up to the capital to top the counting. I think it is a pretty open and shut case. Were hearing a lot of procedural arguments from the republicans including ut house you dish year. Lets move on to the reporting that we all read out of the New York Times over the weekend that donald trump plotted with the Justice Department, a specific lawyer, to try to overturn and oust the acting attorney general and use the power of the doj to force the overturning of the results. I know you tad you will not talk about evidence that you might use in the trial, but this seems like it might come up. The Justice Department is supposed to be the independent representative of the American People, not the president and his personal attorneys. It shows it is part of trump trying to influence the election from day one. He and his team filed numerous lawsuits that were all throne out and culminating in the insta gation of the mob. This is all part of his intent to do whatever he could, including corrupting the Justice Department to try to stop the certification of the election. Allow me just to add that hay are looking into officials that may have improperly seeked to impede the doj there is more time given up to the impeachment and the senate trial. Its not the beginning until the first week of february. Does that help or hurt the case against trump . The case is already so strong, as i said it was all on tv and on social media. But the wronger that time goes on, more intend comes out as well as his supporters that came out, and that came from the white house to the house and violently stormed the house to try to stop the count and theyre all now coming out to say question did this because donald trump told us to. I think who knows, in the next two weeks more evidence may come out. We were ready to try this case the day after and the evidence was so strong and apparent, but more comes down every day. We dont know what could have been doming, but we did hear more over the weekend, should the article have been written more broadly. Did it need a second arld . Did it need to be written more broadly in order to get this new evidence under its banner . Well, i have to say that incitement to violence in and of itself is probably the most serious charge you could make against a president of the United States. Because what were saying is donald trump incited the mob to come to the capitol and stop the certification of a legitimate election. I cant think of a more serious charge. Im happy to go over to the senate with my other managers for this case. Coming up, californias new senator takes us to his home to show how covid is hurting his community. And some senators are saying no to President Bidens 1. 9 trillion covid relieve plan. Trillion covid relieve plan. [ thunder rumbles ] [ engine rumbling ] [ beeping ] [ engine revs ] uh, you know theres a 30minute limit, right . Tell that to the rain. [ beeping ] for those who were born to ride, theres progressive. Got my hair [ beeping ] got my head got my brains got my ears got my heart got my soul got my mouth i got life President Joe Bidens plan to help people struggling from covid19 is not off to an easy start. Some senators were all concerned about the size and scope of the plan. Joining me now is capitol hill correspondent leann caldwell. They had a call with the white house and talk to me about what it means for this 1. 9 trillion plan. Its not looking great. The Biden Administration wants to move very quickly. The house of representatives they are moving quickly. Theyre drafting the details of the legislation as we speak. But in an evenly divided senate it becomes a lot more complicated and in this call with the white house yesterday it got bipartisan push back. Senator rob portman announced his retirement, and he talked about his concerns with this proposal today, lets take a listen. Im hopeful that President Biden will follow through. I hope the administration will work with us on a more targeted approach that focuses on things look vaccine distribution. Some of the concerns include the not targeted relief for the stimulus check. There is lots questions saying the hing has not been dry yet on the 900 billion plan. So they say they will work to try to get a bipartisan solution. Theyre going to use a process called reconciliation where they can pass it in the senate with just the support of 50 plus one. But that means it wont need the support of republicans. The White House Briefing today they did not close the door on that. There is still time. Im glad youre not going into budget reconciliation. I tried to brief myself on it earlier today. It does take longer, but as my friend Jake Sherman Sid said, everything would have to brark and they would have to have everyone onboard. I know we have been talking about josh holly in a different respect for quite some time now, but before the insurrection, he was siding with Bernie Sanders on more relief and more direct stimulus to working americans, where does he stand on the size of this bill . He has not been commenting yet on policy. He says he has been canceled from all things and we will ask him where he stands. He is trying to start a new antidemocratic tone here. He might still support these direct stimulus checks. I laugh because he is talking about getting silenced on multiple very public platforms. Anyway, thank you so much for joining us. And Gavin Newsome is lifting restrictions on some indoor activities effective immediately. The virus has compounding deep rooted inequality in some of the areas densest neighbors. Joining me now is jacob soberoff. What was it like to walk around in secretary padillas hometown . It is ground zero of ground zero of covid at this moment. In the city of los angeles here, and senator padilla, the senator appointed by Governor Newsom is from here. He was born here, his family still lives here, he has a very very, very personal connection. I dont think it can be under stated. It is worse than it has been ever before. Take a look at this. Did you say 12 . A quarter of all of the students here are homeless . This is a community with a lot of poverty and pain. Life was hard here well before the pandemic. Now, with record covid unemployment rates. What do you do for work . I clean houses. Since the pandemic started and everything went down. Alex padilla was here. It is working class. Last fall, researchers predicted that california was the epicenter of the next covid wave. In affluent brentwood, covid cases at the beginning of cases in january in pacoima that number is five times as high. Many people here cant work from home so they get infected and bring the virus home to their families. How many people do you know that live here that have gotten it . Probably seven. Is it different with everyone living together like this . We do need to advance olss like living wages and it is very different to do that in different parts of the country but here people are feeling the pinch big time. You heard him himself talk about a solution for what is happening out here not just in terms of a vaccine, but in terms of policies that address the vast economic inequality here. I think for me what stuck out talking to people there in pacoima and throughout the city is they have been faced with challenges here for all of their lives. Managing closed, these are things you know, life has been stuff for e folks in this down, but now it is a point where theyre feeling it here in a way that many people across the country are not. And alex padilla says we have to attack that not just from sieving lives for the pandemic today, but making sure the next time there is a crisis making sure these people are not as vulnerable. Just look at housing and the problem that housing has been in Southern California. Notably in Southern California now. Thank you so much for joining us, my friend. One citys effort to open schools quickly is proving not so easy. And ten House Republicans voted to impeach donald trump, but will any g. O. P. Senators vote to convict him . Singers safelite repair, safelite replace. The show of unity we saw on the steps of the capitol is disappearing faster than the fame of Bernie Sanders mittens. They are threatening to stall confirmation hearings for President Bidens cabinet picks. And today, impeachment papers will be walked over to the senate from the house. This is a big waste of time. We need to be focused on covid and rebuilding the economy. I think it is a smooth point. I think a lot of americans are going to think its strange that the senate is trying to convict and remove from office a man that left office a week ago. With me now is jake sherman. Not calling this a witch hunt or a hoax, what is the procedure policy . I dont think anyone is going to defend Donald Trumps behavior, but their point is that there are more pressing issues. Listen, i have i find it really hard to believe that as we sit her on january 25th, that there will be some sort of movement of 17 republicans that will vote to convict trump. I dont see it happening. He is out of office and we dont knee to be wasting our time on this, but a lot of people believe you can impeach someone not in office. So, you know, i think that the politics are what they are, right . People are incentivized. Theyre that is the ugly reality of politics in 2021. You might believe that what he did was disgusting. You might believe it was improper and impeachable, but youre not going to vote that way. Thats just the way that the politics run. So today on the news of rob portmans announcement made the point to all of us that this is pretty big news and pretty indicative of where the Republican Party is going. What does it mean to have someone like rob port man who has run really good campaigns in the past against formidable can gaits and come out on top. What does it say about what he is deciding. He won a swing state. That was a very big deal. To me that means he believes that were not going to get back to any sort of governing agenda any time soon. He said as much in his statement. He is someone that has tremendous respect. People really respect him in the capitol. I only say that because it means that he can get things done when republicans are in the majority. People feel like they can deal with him. He was a legislative affairs director. He was a trade representative. He is someone that understands the levers of power in washington and would not be leaving unless he felt like the place was just beyond repair, and there is an argument to be made that we are broken at the moment. And he doesnt believe it will end any time soon. Great, you got ohio, you have north carolina, pennsylvania. Is it more what does it say about who might run in their place. If a trumpier version of them runs are they more electable in those three states . That is a good question. We laid out midday a list of candidating that could run for his seats and it breaks down on the line that the Republican Party is breaking at the moment. The businessfriendly republicans, and then there are jim jordans and jim davidsons. In a state like ohio that is getting redder, it will probably shift towards them based on what we know now. That will happen all over the country. You look in alabama where Richard Shelby is in the later part of his 80s. Chuck grassley is also in his 80s. It is going to require a shift to the right. Is punch bowl going to allow you to get better digs . No, i dont think so. This is, i know leslie jones is quite upset about my skroundings, but this is what it is. People worry about you. They wonder if you have a family, if you go home, if you see them whether or not youre allowed to leave that office. Good to see you, thank you for joining us.
