Research and rescue efforts are still under way and officials expect that number to rise. Relief efforts have been pouring in from governments and private companies as well as nonprofits. Accord tog ring to the red cros 60,000 people dont have access to clean Drinking Water and 45 of homes are severely damaged or destroyed. Literally looks like we are bombed. Everything is gone. Ive lived here my whole life. Been through hurricane floyd which was a 5 also. I tell people this is like a 10. Everything is gone. I got my two boys, my wife, and we dont have nothing else. Joins me now tracking the storm, nbcs Michelle Grossman and in nags head, david. Michelle, what can we expect as the Hurricane Dorian starts to hit the coast . Day 15 of this storm. Nine days as a hurricane. The good news is we are finally starting to see it kbexit to th right and moving at a quick pace. We are still seeing heavy rain in some spots. Latest stats. 2 00 advisory came in just a few minutes ago. 90 Miles Per Hour. Still a category 1 storm. 125 miles northeast of cape hatteras. Thats a big difference. Its because its moving so much faeser. Remember, over the bahamas its stationery. Finally at 21 Miles Per Hour and moving very quickly. Its going to be out of here over the next couple of days. This is a look at radar. This is a threehour loop. We see the heavy rain, but towards the last frame, finally starting to see the yellow colors go over the atlantic. Thats good news. The yellows and oranges are heavy rains. Now seeing a break for cape hatteras, ocean city, maryland. The track for the category 1 storm, this just wont quit. It was maintaining category 1 status through 8 00 a. M. On saturday. 85 Miles Per Hour winds. Same thing saturday night, and then by sunday, finally decreasing to a sub Tropical Storm with 75mileperhour winds. By saturday youre going see uncomfortable conditions. Not looking at dangerous conditions in southeastern part of massachusetts but an inconvenience for the weekend, right . As we look at watches and warnings here, lots of colors on the map. I know. Gets confusing here. Tropical storm warning in massachusetts, parts of cape cod and then up through parts of canada as well. Nova scotia, we are looking at a Tropical Storm watch. That will be upgraded the next couple of days. Also had some heavy rainfall overnight, in the past couple of hours. We are looking at flash flood warning. Thats a life threatening situation. We are looking at pretty gusty winds, 7 2 Miles Per Hour in nags head. But we are starting to see it exit stage right. We love to hear that. Explain something to me. Its so long, tests everyones patience. We are looking at devastating conditions. Theres no questions the oceans warming are adding to this. When you have warm oceans its like high octane fuel for a car. Its all it needs to keep going if it doesnt have to wind sheer. On top of that we have debates this is in the infancy of research where we are having larger global issues request blocking patterns related to climate. Its going to be interesting over the next couple of years where we are going to be seeing or having much more research on this and we are going to be talking at it for many more years to come, but thats just in the infancy. Michelle, thanks so much. Lets go to david gurra. David, what are you seeing there . Reporter they were intermittent bouts of intensity, heavy rain, high winds. When the bands came through nags head where i am. Things changed in the morning as that storm came closer to cape lookout, hatteras just south of where im standing. Over the course of the morning until an hour ago there has been a lot of wind and rain. Im standing outside a condominium complex not unlike what you see up and down the outer banks. The roof slid off. Whole a. C. Units fell from the roof down to the parking lot, and insulation covers the parking lot like snow. Is there is real damage here. We are beginning to assess that after the wind died down. We are able to move about and see what happened here. The real area of concern is here 60 miles south as you make your way down the islands that are the outer banks. Hatteras, at the bottom and then oaker coke the island you can reach only by a ferry ride. There are reports from the governor that there are hundreds of residents from that island that decided to weather the storm. That island just a spit of land between the ocean and the sound. It will be very important for rescuers to get there as soon as possible. But of course with the surf as it is now, still roiling, it could be some time before that Ferry Service is resumed. The big concern here, as it has been since the first forecast of the storm came into play, is what happens to highway 12. Called a highway. Just a twolane road. As you know, the only way to get to hatteras. That could be washed out by the storm waters, can be washed out by sand and sea grass. In storms past its taken days or weeks for residents to get to those communities to the south. Certainly our three and ouou with our friends and family back home. With dorian away from the bahamas we are getting a sobering look at the damage left in his wake. Late thursdays the official death toll rose to 30 with thousands more missing. The Bahamas Health minister told Rachel Maddow that number will raise even higher. A number of deaths. We have been somewhat slow to confirm or verify the deaths, but to imagine the logistical challenge of covering that great distance, that large Square Footage to retrieve bodies and to confirm deaths, to bring them into the health system. And so we expect that the death toll will rise significant will i. Now, according to nbc news, nearly 70,000 people are in need of medical aid, including ax to med since for chronic illnesses. Dor all but wipe out the supply leaving lit toll no clean Drinking Water for 60,000 people. Relief efforts have begun to trickle in. New theyre all stepping in to help. Joins me now from nassau in the bahamas is morgan chessky. We have been seeing the damage, hearing the fission of loss, but what are the people youre talking to saying they need most right now . Reporter i asked the very question when i had to chance to miss marsh harbor yesterday, on the island that took the brunt of dorian. We landed a few hours after the airport opened. Time and time again when i asked people there what do you need the most, the answer was almost always the same everything. They need everything they can get right now after the storm levelled the neighborhood after neighborhood. And leahas left so many people stranded. Clean Drinking Water in short supply. A woman nursing a young boy, an infant said she hadnt had a real meal since before dorian hit. We know they have been take ton nassau to be take ton hospitals for help, but one of the growing problems we are seeing is those who arent injured by stranded in the hard to reach areas that are growing more dehydrated, fatigued by the day and you can see it in the faces of the people we spoke to, the growing frustration. But also, just hopelessness because they feel forgotten in some of those places that havent had a chance to get some of those supplies. We are at the airport, a kind of staging area for a lot of relief agencies to go there to help out. The prime minster said it best with so much Square Footage affected by the hurricane, not to mention the accessibility factor its dire straits for a lot of people still in the northern bahamas that were just ravaged by dorian. Morgan . You mentioned the dehydration, but also the ho hopele hopelessness. Something we are continuing to think about, our friends there in the bahamas. Thanks so much for being there. Joining me now on the phone from the bahamas, minute per role, a member of the parliament. Thanks for being with us this afternoon. Give us a sense from the government perspective, whats the status of the search and rescue operations . First of all, i want to say on behalf of the government of the bahamas, thank you for having me, and thank you for reaching out to school bus certainly thanks to the United States and all of the Caribbean Community for reaching out to our country and people and being there in or time of need. We got a hard hit from dorian. Theres nothing getting around that. For the first time we have been hit to this expension. We appreciate that it is unprecedented, but its happened. But the bahamian people, i want the say early on in this interview, is a resilient people. All is not lost for us, and we will rise again. We realize that there is much work to be done. As we speak our prime minsters throughout the island. Our priority at the time is search and rescue. We had great flooding. The good part we are hearing is people are still alive and theres still hope and theyre looking for us to find them and receive help from the United States coast guard and members of the Caribbean Community and they are assisting us. Our police force and Defense Force are hard at work trying to preserve and save lives and that is our priority. We are thankful. We are hopeful that we are going come through this and come out stronger. This is not something that is going to take us down, be you we are going to go up as as a result of it. We realize that in all things, things can Work Together for good. We have that hope, morgan. We are working gt to. That is what is happening. People are coming together. Again, this is unprecedented. However we can utilize our resources, private communities, ngos, everyone is coming together, putting our hands to the crowd and making sure our people receive the help they need. President trump is still angry about the backlash following his own misleading comments about Hurricane Dorians path. Hes keeping the controversy alive by continuing to insist that he was in fact correct when he said the storm was potentially headed towards alabama. This all despite the fact that experts like the Alabama National Weather Service have said otherwise. And frankly, that alone is not particularly surprising because according to the Washington Post the president made more than 12,000 false or misleading claims since taking office. The president has a long history of using the institution of the white house to defend his mistakes, his misstatements and even conspiracy theories. As nbcs first read puts it. Its one thing for the politician to embarrass themselves. Its one thing to use Government Employees and taxpayer funds to further embarrassment. The big question today, how far is President Trump willing to take this controversy over a misleading statement . Joining me now, the New York Times chief White House Correspondent and nbc political analyst peter baker as well as political White House Reporter nancy cook. I want to thank you both for being with us this afternoon. Peter i would like to start with you. Frankly this has been happening for a week now. Yesterday alone the president tweeted about alabama five times. Then he said a statement about the remarks and asked to see a fox news report tore further elaborate. This behavior isnt new. In fact as we write, its been the pattern since the very first day of his administration when he asked his press secretary to show edited photos inflating his crowd size or a fewnt mos later when he create add a commission to search for it videoer fraud. Or in between when he requested Congress Investigate a baseless investigation that president obama had his phones at trump tower wiretapped. Given all those examples, peter is there a red line for the administration . Is there a point where they say, this has gone too far, or is this part of working for the president . I think a reality of working in the white house is the president is going say things that you as a staffer might say things that are not correct and you might not theres not that much you can do about it if you want to work there. He lives in his own narratives, own reality, sometimes impervious to outside facts and hes hard to knock off. Once hes got something in his hand hes going to stick with it. Whats remarkable here is most politicians know, certainly president s know, if you want something to go away, you dont give it air. This could have been a oneday story and everybody would have moved on to more important things but he keeps talking about it so we keep talking about it. Its a psych toll this point. He sees people criticizing about it. Determined to prove he was right. Therefore he keeps putting out maps or statements from aides compelled to defend him and so forth and the story lives on. Seem like an odd thing. But he hasnt been in public much this week and maybe he doesnt have as much on his schedule. When we talk about this kind of consistent effort to prove a false statement, is there a sense, nancy, of frustration with the president s behavior inside the white house . I talked to a number of white house officials yesterday and to me it seems like people just didnt want the talk about it. They shrugged and moved on. Some portion of the American Population is outraged by his behavior and the way he doubles down on this, but i think people in the white house, honestly several aides have grown immune to it. Theyre used to it and think its a battle not worth fighting to rush into the oval office and try to talk him out of it or tell him to put down his phone and stop tweeting. They cope by going about their business and focusing on other things. To me, theres a sense of resignation that this is just the way the president operates and this is just part of working for him. Its interesting because peter, i have to say, i was shocked earlier today when it became apparent that the president s campaign is actually fundraising off of this controversy. Theyre selling a pack of trump brand fine point markers for 15 bucks saying this has the special ability to drive the fake news crazy. Is there a distinction between the president s personal grievances and his political ones . Hes playing to the grievances of his base. Thats the thing that has made him so resilient with a person part of the population. He reflects their sense toward the elites the establishment, towards the east coast, toward the wealthy, toward the welloff, the well connected. Never mind this is a new york billionaire whos pretty well connected himself and now the most powerful person on the planet. He channels that sense of grievance. He plays off of it. Its not surprising he would fundraise off it because what hes saying to his supporters is look what theyre doing to me. Its the same thing they do to you, and we need to stand up against them. When you talk about this antiestablishment sort of resentme resentment, whats the big picture here . Im thinking about something a president ial historian told the press. He said great president s admit when they screw up and fix it and move on. Right now its a mistake about a hurricane hitting a state, but it could be a bigger deal where it cost live and people cant trust the government. Nancy, whats the longterm effect of this type of behavior . Well i think the longterm effect is theres a question about whether or not people believe in government institutions or whether or not people believe in factbased. Evidence. I talked to a Union Representative from the National Weather Service Organization yesterday which represents a bunch of hurricane forecasters and meteorologists that work for the government and there was concern among the ranks of those people that the president continuing to double down on alabama, for instance, sent a very mixed message to people, lets say, in the carolinas about where the hurricane path could go, and there was some da danger in that. Thank you so much for being with us this afternoon. We appreciate your insight. Coming up, dorian packing a onetwo punch across south carolina. Some communities flood. Others shredded by tornadoes. We are continuing to track Hurricane Dorian and the destruction its left behind. The category 1 storm is finally expected to push out to sea after breaking havoc about coasto North Carolina. Thats where dorian made its first landfall in the u. S. Earlier today, bringing a major storm surge to the outer banks and ripping apart homes and neighborhoods in emerald isil. I know you talked to the mayor. What kind of damage are they looking another and what will that recovery look like for them . Reporter morgan, take a look behind me to see just the kind of catastrophic damage we are talking at here in emerald isle. This was someones home. This was an rv that was tossed around like a rag doll when a water spout ripped there you this community yesterday morning at around 9 00 a. M. We are seeing residents beginning to come back here and assess the damage which is just absolutely catastrophic here and absolutely devastating for all the residents here, trying to come back and pick up the pieces. I spoke to a woman earlier today who was in her home as this water spout ripped through her community. She says she was holding on to the countertops for dear life. She felt her home lift up and thankfully it went back down and she survived this horrifying ordeal. I spoke to the mayor about the last 24 hours here. The city issued mandatory evacuation orders on wednesday morning and that might be part of the reason they were no fatalities, remarkably, in this event. We have had water spouts here before, but this is by far the worst water spout we have had. The devastation is just unreal. Reporter and i hear you were able the avoid injuries or deaths. Its unbelievable. There were two families inside when the water spout hit, was drinking coffee. He was able the a get out. Its just a miracle that no one was hurt. Reporter this is a tight knit community and the mayor tells me he anticipates everyone will pull together and come back together after this water spout tore through here in emerald isle. He hopes in the next few weeks or months theyll be able to invite tourists back here to reinvigorate the economy. Hard to look at a Community Like that, in pieces but glad to see people behind you there helping. And we are also following the destruction in the bahamas today where dorian is confirmed to have killed 30 people. Officials say the death toll is expected to go up as crews intect the damage for more victims. Meantime, survives are filling the local hospitals. Reporter morgan, good afternoon to you. We are here at the bahamas, the heart of relief effort. I want to step away to let my camera man ronny show you the evacuees coming in from the most ravaged areas in the northern bahamas. There are people coming here that are severely dehydrated. Yesterday we spoke to the woman leading the pretriage area behind the busses there and she told us theyve even have to resuscitate people several time because they are coming here in such fragile shape. Earlier today we are at Princess Margaret hospital. Its a facility right now that is taking in all these medical evacuees, indun dated with the amount of people coming in, with the kind of injuries theyre bringing. We know pregnant moms have been brought in, patients that needy di al sis. Thats just the tip of the iceberg. Just the beginning. Today we spoke to captain doug, thats the name he goes by and he told us how grateful he was to be alive and to be at the hospital. Listen. Ive never seen that kind of destruction anywhere. Horrible. Horrible. Thank god. You saved me. Reporter what does it feel like to be in this hospital . Well, im here and alive, so this continues to be an all help hands on deck operation that is going the take days if not weeks we know only 115 medical evacuees have been brought to the hospital and the expectation unfortunately is for hundreds more to follow. One man by the name after gene morgan, when i asked him how he described this, he called the fact that im here and alive, its a miracle. Morgan . Wow. Thank you so much. While the Biden Campaign is touting new endorsements from nuch party chairs we are five months out from actually votes being cast. Le tos show an increasingly narrow race. Joining me now, mike, what are i hear inning New Hampshire this afternoon . Reporter well, morgan the former Vice President in the last ten minutes finished up his first event of the day, a town hall as a restored mill here. We heard the usual stump speech describing this is the a battle for the soul of america, talking at his concern on the day we just got some new economic data. The fact that we are teetering on the a recession, as biden put it, donald trump might double down oin his worst instincts to divide the country. We also heard something now, biden talked about his best accomplishment from thinks time in the senate. We are approaching the 25th anniversary of the violence against women act, and as my daughter, whos a social worker would say, i wrote that with my own hand. This act must be reauthorized. It has fundamentally altered the prospects and lives of so many women in america. So many women. And we cannot stop this effort to fundamentally change the culture in america. Joe biden using his remarks here to put pressure on the republicanled u. S. Senate to take up a reauthorization of that. One aspect of that thats unique to New Hampshire, the rips vote is critical to democrats across the country, but its especially potent here in New Hampshire. New hampshire was the first state in the nation to have an allfemale congressional delegation. Their state legislature has had one of the highest rates of women serving. You hear about joe biden talk about the 1994 crime bill, the violence against women act that tripped him up in the past but using it here in New Hampshire. Mike, thanks so much for being with us. Theres one particularly daunting task for any 2020 candidate whos not named biden, warren, or sander this is weekend, and that is, as we mentioned, standing out in the pack. Politico reporting the typical power brokers in New Hampshire are paralyzed by the number of democrats running, meaning the race for high profile endorsements continues. A poll from last month show 21 of Granite State voters are still undecided about their candidate of choice. Lets break it down with susan dellpercio and bazzle smichael. Susan, i want to jump off with the poll. If youre one of those other 15 candidates, what are you doing to stand out . Its really hard because when you look at the three candidates that are there, two senators, warren and sanders are from neighboring states so they have been spending so much time there for years so they already have a builtin constituency. Biden is running on the obama connection. The other candidates, what they need to figure out is how to make a good case for running second or third to look viable. So to really target their own niche support, if you will. Because otherwise if theyre trying to compete for the front line theyre probably not going get it. Someone who looks like theyre trying to do that strategically is mayor pete. Lets take a look at the ad that he released in iowa. As a veteran and as a mayor, ive seen what we can achieve when we have each others backs. But in todays divided america we are at each others throats. Our rivers and oceans are rising. Health care costs are soaring and our kids are learning active shooter drills before they learn to read. Bazzle, lets talk about tone for a minute. Is that what democratic voters are looking for . I think some are looking for that. Cans we have about electability, you know, that standard is kind of vague. It means Different Things to different people. I think that you see this because his fundraising has been good even if it hasnt moved his poll numbers considerably. There are a lot of primary voters that want mayor petes tone and approach in this race. They still want him to talk about the values that are democratic values. So theres still a place for him. Again, does that mean that he can last beyond iowa and New Hampshire . Not sure, but for the moment, there are a lot of voters that want his presence on that stage. For at democrats is this a race about values or is it a race about policy, especially in the primary . A little bit to susans point its a race about what anybody else wants to make it. Right now if you look at the meta analysis of the follows, you put thele tos together, biden has a third. That means there are twothirds of the electorate that want someone else. It leaves room for the other candidates to say, if i cant be number one, let me be number two. Maybe its on values that mayor pete is talking about. Maybe criminal justice. Each one will pick their thing to ride that out as long as they can continue the get support, particularly Financial Support because they have to stay viable. Just to build on that, we are not just talking about democratic voters in New Hampshire. Its an open primary. Lacking for folks to break out and find a moderate run to find the niche to get them to the polls. How important do you think that is . Someone better talk about it. Youre talking about republicans and independents going to the primary this year. Because theres no primary for republicans, really, so thats where theyre going head is where the action is. It will become a lot more competitive and almost look like a National Race in some ways. There was a report on the hill that saided sanders was having trouble getting older vote tore support him. The point im making is there are a loot of people that havent really made up their mind and candidates who havent been able to penetrate other constituencies in the primary. I want to point to something i read in politico. It said if the democrat race is narrowed to three top officials, constitue officials havent gotten the message. I think its a stay viable look good, keep giving good performances. Because potentially something can go wrong with one of the toptier candidates. You never know whats going to happen and you have to be in it to win it, so thats why theyre there. 2004 it was joe leakerman ahead in the policy. Howard dean came in, moved the party to the left. Everyone was talking about howard dean. Who did iowa pick . John kerry who was way down in the polls for a long time in the process. Iowa voters said, this is the candidate we want. Raise money, stay viable, do a commercial if you can, just stay can. If voters havent made up their minds that means you can make up their minds. Also means its anyones raise. Susan, bazzle, thanks so much for being with me. Youre going stick around for later in the show. Up next, two stories that raise new questions about the president s power within the Republican Party right here on msnbc. Big dreams start with small steps. But dedication can get you there. Easily set, track and control your goals right from the chase mobile® app. Chase. Make more of whats yours®. So, should President Trump be more worried than he is about republicans who want to challenge him for the partys 2020 nomination . Two republicans announced bids for the gop nod. And mark sanford who is still weighing a run could make three. Even if their chances of beating trump are thin they could deal some damage. Trumps fitness for office becomes a conversation piece for republicans and republican leading independents. Theyll have accomplished something nobody in politics has even bothered to attempt this campaign year, talking to center right swing voters who are uncomfortable with the man in the white house. This as politico reports today the Republican Party in four states, south carolina, nevada, arizona and kansas are set to cancel the primaries and cauc caucuses. They underscore the extent to which his allies are determined to snuff out any potential nuisance en route to his nomination or deny republican critics a platform to embarrass him. Back now, republican strategist. Susan you have seen this report. I want to first go to the rnc statement. The rnc and the Republican Party are firmly behind the president and any effort to challenge him in a primary is bound to go nowhere. Do you buy that . Yes, because its been set up like that. Theyve done rulemaking changes. The rnc is fully in tandem with Donald Trumps campaign. They have been working together. Now whats interesting is on the campaign front, i have to say, the Trump Campaign has been working hard and doing things a campaign typically should. Like what . They have been out they have been doing outreach to state Party Chairmen for the past 18 months. Right after the president was sworn in. So they have done that work on the ground in those states to really shut out people from looking to run and looking to potentially be a delegate to the convention. But that being said, didnoesnt mean that it is right and just because you can cancel primaries like they did for george bush and pat buchanan or even barack obama in 2012 arizona was one of them. Doesnt make it right. And what is interesting this time around, i dont think that there was any democrat or republican before this president that their own party was so divided on. And in New Hampshire which does have open primary, bill weld is at 16 . Granted, very little, but the fact that he is there and working it you think is meaningful. Is meaningful. And the president is so unstable right now. His behavior so bad. It may not open the door for bill weld, but it may open the door for someone should the president collapse. And that is my question. Even if we are talking about the fact that these primary challengers may not have a chance to win, what is the effect . Can they do real damage to the president . They can if the party isnt as divided as susan and others are saying, that they can continue to weave a narrative that may not excite other republicans to come out against him, but it may tamp down enough of their vote and with the democratic vote higher, it may do damage in the long run. But i was like where is the Bernie Sanders of the right. Because even though he criticized democrats for rigging the system against him, which i dont agree with, i do agree with some of the changes that have been made to de mmocratize the process. And when we talk about 2012, the po post more tell on the election, there is a need for the right and left. But for those saying it was unfairtell on the election, there is a need for the right and left. But for those saying it was unfair so cancel the primary, they had a full list of dates. So is it unfair . Yes, but Mitch Mcconnell wont even bring Gun Legislation to a vote to support his president. And so if you have some be that will do that in light of everything that weve seen in the last few weeks and months, this isnt really beyond the pale for them. And we also talked about the importance of going after the center right voters and what that did in the last election. Is that going to be important this time around . The interesting thing now is in the sense of a primary, it will be interesting to see if bill weld or joe walsh can talk to them. Joe walsh especially since he is a conservative talk show host. So he is taking 2ru6r78 from tr right and doing it in a personal way. But it is going to be hard to see how one of these take down the president , but i think that they can just aggravate him beyond belief. And the other thing is, both candidates have said that they will not support the president. Usually in a primary, even Bernie Sanders at the end says that he would support hillary clinton. These two have said offer the b off the bat we will not support donald trump nor run a third party candidacy. So anyone in line with them are hoping that they will follow their lead and not vote for donald trump in the general election. A lot to discuss. All right. But as you know, heros come in all forms including those who donate supplies and their time. Humanitarian aid is already on its way to the bahamas and one of the largest efforts is being led by world central kitchen, a relief organization. And from food to water and even rescue vehicles, that organization is determined to help get the bahamas back on its feet. They have loaded a ship with supplies in ft. Lauderdale and teams are on the ground there as well before the ship sets sail using whatever supplies they could salvage to provide meals to shelters as well as hospitals and nursing homes. Not the first time world central kitchen has come to the rescue because they have helped feed the people of puerto rico after maria hit just two years ago. The red cross is also among the organizations working around the clock to help those victims in the bahamas and all along the east coast.
