Dont get excited about markets . Gusts coming through. Not until not until they 50 left, 50 stayed. Get we see this kind of movement. I know every neighbor i have within a quarter mile is here. The market down more than 4 in a week. With all were covering let me show you whats going today, this number still gets on over here right now. This is the storm, the eye of our attention. Its a very serious number. Were going to discuss it more. The storm, that clear blue part. Thank you for the hours of it has moved. Coverage ive been watching it came on board around mexico prior to my shift starting. Beach just east of panama city, thank you for the coverage youll be providing for us. This is an important story. West of Port Saint Joe. Its moving inland now. Ali velshi with us all you can see huge affects of the afternoon. We take over with a look at this storm. This is i10, a major interstate history making storm. That goes across the country, think of it this way. It came onshore two miles an and that is about in fact, hour shy of a category 5. The hardest of the winds are as recently as this past hitting i10 and this becomes a weekend, most folks in other very, very serious problem right parts of the country werent now. Then it moves into georgia and talking about this approaching it is going to be perhaps by storm. They werent talking about Hurricane Michael. 8 00 this evening packing 100 this was not florence where we tracked that storm starting as a low pressure system from the mileperhour winds. West coast of africa all the way come with me over here and take a look at a radar picture. Across the atlantic. This is an actual radar picture this was something different. That shows thats the eye of the and it turns out something storm moving in. Vastly more powerful at the you can see that it was quite well defined there as typical. Core. It is approaching for those folks who have roots in the southern u. S. , a vital artery bill is the expect herrt here, right now. And thats interstate 10 that bill, tell me whats happening to the storm now . Runs east to west through this were waiting for it to entire area. If youve been watching our weaken. Its a bowling ball, wound up coverage, then you know and now were waiting to see how meteorologist bill karins has been on this storm for hours. Far inland will the tree damage i would say days, as its be extreme. Were still getting hundreds, thousands of trees being knocked approaching. Bill, did the strength of this down by the intense winds that at landfall surprise even you . Are now well inland. I think ill go through a this is going to cross into georgia. People in South Carolina are period of wondering how many trees are going to fall on South Carolina. This thing wound up so tightly and well have to see. The faster it moves and the better it holds together, the longer the winds stay strong. We saw tallahassee, 64 Miles Per Hour, that hour. A city known for its trees. I guarantee the power is starting to go out in tallahassee. The story through the rest of the afternoon is pictures from landfall, how bad was it. We started to see some pictures of mexico beach. That looked like a tornado. The ugliest area, unfortunately, for those people and those residents. Probably wont be much better in Port Saint Joe. Panama city will be a mix. Thats where weve got Kerry Sanders and lester holt. That was rough. Ive seen pictures of roofs that were peeled off and some structures were fine. So its not complete devastation in panama city and panama city beach. We know that. You can see the threehour loop of the eye coming on shore and you can see how it went right through what we call the right front quadrant of the storm there in the mexico beach area. These small towns here, theyre in it right now, still getting the strongest winds of the storm. We saw how the bright red, we just watched panama city where lester was in his hotel room, they were in that part. Now that is translating further north. I want to go to south port, northeast of panama city. Im joined by daniel dean who is in south port. Hes just had a tree crash through his home. Daniel, whats the situation where you are . The winds are really bad right now. We have every tree on our property just about, except maybe one or two, completely down. One of the trees in our back yard just fell and one of the branches torpedoed itself basically through our living room. Its putting a lot of water in. We got some buckets under it. Its nothing major, major, but it scared the few of us that are here. My wife is going on nine months pregnant right now. It kind of scared her a little bit. Were just toughening out. Most of the siding off the porch and the roof has been ripped off. The telephone pole thats in our back yard has snapped itself and laid down over our fence. The power lines are down here in south port. The church thats across from us, it looks like the roofing of the two trailers on their property literally were taken off of the trailers themselves. I know that approximately 23,000 people in the county are without power right now. Some of my coworkers ive been talking to and giving them information as best i can over the phone are without power. Im running on backup generators. Theres a bunch of trees down blocking a lot of the roadways all the way up through south port. Its really bad. The wind is so bad it is shaking our trailer. Our trailer is meant to withstand category 3 storm hurricanes and its literally shaking the trailer. Wow. Did you expect this to be the case . Obviously you made a decision to stay. Did a lot of your neighbors make that decision and why did you make it . I was born and raised in panama city. Ive been here for opal, ive been here for andrew, for just about every major hurricane thats come through since 1987 when i was born. They really dont scare me. The big issue i have is the trees falling and things like that. They said it was going to be a category 3 by the time it made landfall so that went into my judgment about staying. Evacuation problems would have been trying to find gas, trying to find somewhere to go to because i dont have anybody. All my family is here. I was talking to my brother approximately 1 25, 1 30 this afternoon central time. Hes over at our godfathers house and hes like, oh man, i got to go because the roof caved in in the garage. I have yet to hear back from him since then. Oh wow. Its bad right now. If youre listening to this and you are in bing county, dont get in the roads. Wait for Law Enforcement or the radio to come back on or the news to tell you its safe. People have been calling in to Fire Departments around where you are in panama city and they cant do anything right now. Sorry about your tree and roof damage but im glad you and your wife are healthy and safe. I got to ask the obvious question though. You said your wife was nine months pregnant. These storms have been known to send people into labor. Whats your plan . We have a bathtub filled with water in case the power went off because we run off a well. My aunt has been an emt most of her life. Now she works in hospice in bay medical. A couple good friends i have work in the hospital business. Ive taken several different first aid classes and things like that. Ive done a lot of research and my wife has done a lot of Research Online on home pregnancy birth in case that were to happen. You sound like a prepared man. The barometric pressure has not caused laborer caused contractions to start. She is in pain. Other than that she is fine, not having any contractions. You certainly seem to have thought that part out so were happy about that. Im not sure about staying but the idea that you know exactly what to do if your wife does go into labor. Our thoughts are with you. I hope you get ahold of your brother. Call us back and let us know that hes okay. Sounds like hes also having a rough afternoon. Daniel dean for us in south port. So many people have life decisions. Everyone is like, oh, leave, pack up and leave. His point is everybody i know lives around me. And he has all the care in case his wife goes into labor. What was his other option, go to some other town, other city, and have a child there possibly. Monday evening i drove from tallahassee down to st. Pete. Every gas station was backed up with people trying to get gas. Everybody was getting gas, trying to think about how to get out, what to do when that happens. I want to go to Port Saint Joe. Its just off the map. Its to the east of where this came the hurricane came up here at mexico beach. Port saint joe is where mariana was. You will have seen her goggles blow off because of the wind, you will have seen her hold onto a railing, forced to go inside a hotel. You should be experiencing weaker winds now, mariana. Weaker winds, ali, but after all that, we are not able to come live with a live picture with you because cell phones are down and now is when you really start to see the cell towers that may have gotten damaged, around me the downed trees, the debris still flying around. It is not safe to drive around. Hearing this gentleman that you just spoke to, daniel, here in Port Saint Joe, the hospital closed at 5 00 p. M. Yesterday. There is no shelter in Port Saint Joe. The mayor telling me this storm caught a lot of people off guard here and the storm hit 15 minutes, a short 15minute drive from where i am in mexico beach. Weve started to hear about businesses along the ghost thco lot of these places have been completely wiped out because of this strongest storm to have hit the Florida Panhandle on record. Mexico beach is in bay county, a different county from where i am now, 2,000 people or so, but very much connected to Port Saint Joe. Again, when you talk to your guy daniel, the people that are here in this hotel seeking shelter, a lot of them were not prepared. They tell you about when ivan hit pensacola in 2004, when opal hit in 1995 or kate in 1985 and your heart goes out to them but, again, we havent really seen the extent of the damage. Mariana, stay safe in Port Saint Joe, florida. I want to go to nnbc nightly news anchor lester hotel in panama city, beach. I see the mattresses have come off the window there which indicates your winds have died down. Yeah. Based on bill karins advice, as he stated it was going to slow down a little bit. We took shelter because 150 mileperhour winds, it was like a liquid blow torch blowing past here. I want to open the door and keep in mind the winds are blowing parallel. I want to give you an idea. Take a look at this roof, the overhang in our hotel. You can see that metal is about to break loose. We just ventured out for the first time a few minutes ago, at least as far as this covered balcony is concerned. We can see some localized flooding. We see a lot of trees down. I see a building across the way. I cant tell if thats damage. It looks like broken windows. Can you see this building across the street . We got a shot of that. That looks like roof damage. Theres going to be a lot of damage. If you werent in a reinforced building of some kind, you were in a lot of trouble here. Ive never seen winds like that, 150 miles an hour and it was like a jet engine. Theres still a lot of debris, a lot of stuff flying around. Were not going to be out certainly on the street itself for a little longer but i thought wed step out under this covered balcony to give you an idea of what it looks like. You can see the trees blowing on their side and still a very, very dangerous environment. Not category 4 winds but some very fierce and dangerous winds. Lester, weve heard a few people refer to it as a jet engine because its the only thing most people know of that sounds like that. We had a guy tell you a few minutes ago it was like a jet engine but it stays there and blows and blows. Youve been through a number of hurricanes and you were saying this felt different to you. Its picking up again. Lets come on in. Yeah, this felt different. I was in my room alone as it was cranking up and it became a little scary. Im not trying to be hyperbolic but it was frightening because of the sounds and the sheets of rain and the wind and you would hear something hit the window. We were all originally pulling these blackout drapes but thats not going to do a lot of good. At one point, we were feeling the windows and the windo it thing to note that the worst is past us but this is bad and i think were still going to be in dangerous conditions for a while. Lester, describe what it was like on the receiving end from getting the news. All night long and all morning long i kept sending out notes and we kept getting updates, its getting stronger, getting stronger. What was the reaction from yourself and the seasoned veterans when you started seeing the numbers go higher and higher and higher . Well, you know, i hate to say it but sometimes we get a little jaded. It happens when you cover things like this. How many times have we seen these things slow up at the last second. We saw it certainly in florence which was a destructive hurricane no doubt. In the back of your mind going, yeah, its going to slow down, its not going to be a 4, it will be a 3 or a 2. This was as advertised, my friend, if not fiercer. I kept watching and thought theres not much room for it to slow down. I think we were all stunned by how quickly it spun up. It felt like it went from zero to 60 or in this case zero to 150 in a couple of hours. Ill be the first to admit, we have a lot of development to do for intensity forecasting. Three days ago this was supposed to be a low end category 1 hurricane. Three days ago that was the prediction at landfall, and here we are, we almost had a category 5. Two miles short of a category 5. Lester, thank you. Lester is in panama city, beach. I went to go to apalachicola, a coastal city where they are continuing to experience strong wind gusts as well as flooding and storm surge up to 7 feet above normal levels according to the latest reports from the National Hurricane center. Its where youve been watching gabe gutierrez. Gabe, whats the situation where you are . The winds have dropped dramatically, ali, and this is indicative of how fast moving this storm is. Ive been standing here for the last 10, 15 minutes and i have noticed a noticeable shift in the wind and the rain. It is at this point dramatically dropped off. Weve been at this location for an hour and a half, two hours when we were forced to move from the downtown area because of those powerful, powerful winds that were slamming into apalachicola and also that flooding. You mentioned the storm surge of 7 feet or so. Part of the Historic Downtown was flooded. You can tell from several of my reports. We heard that a man that was riding out the storm and talked about it sounded like a jet engine but it wouldnt take off. Thats exactly what it sounded like and it was such a rapid ll intensifying storm throughout the morning. When the eye hit further to the west, weve been seeing reports of damage in mexico beach and Port Saint Joe, some of that significant damage there. Here were dealing with the flooding. When this dies out a little more we plan to go back to that downtown area and see how much of it was indeed flooded. But the hotel we were staying at, overnight we were told it had four feet of water around it so we had to move to higher ground. Did you lose power early . Heres the thing. This hotel lost power. The hotel overnight, it was further on into the morning before we lost power but certainly driving here we did see a lot of downed trees and power lines. The concern here is that one road, u. S. 98 in and out of it, it may be impassable for quite a while. Thats a big deal. Gabe, thanks very much. Gabe gutierrez in apalachicola for us. Mayor johnson joins me now from apalachicola. Lets pick up where gabe left off. You have a major thoroughfare that may be impassable. What do you know about u. S. 98 right now . My understanding is that is actually washed in two, and the bridges are closed so definitely you cannot travel u. S. 98. The best course will be to take 20 up in the woods. The problem with up in the woods and its something that bill and i have been talking about in this part of florida, theres a lot of trees, a lot of trees to be downed, and so people may have trouble getting around. Thats true. That is absolutely true. Whats the situation in terms of people who stuck around . Do you have a sense of numbers and do you know what youre getting in terms of calls for help . Early on before the storm intensifi intensified, the chief of police estimated about 60 of the people decided not to heed the warning. As this thing intensified to a category 4, people started to get serious and they started packing up and evacuating. At that rate we still had about 20 of people that decided to ride it out and im concerned about those people. Theyre going to be without power and as you pointed out without the ability to evacuate at this point. What then happens . Do you have shelter facilities . No, we dont. Thats the thing. We dont have shelters because were on the extreme coast. We have an arrangement with places like tallahassee and other areas that we can send our special needs people for shelter but nothing in franklin county. We havent gotten our reports even from tallahassee. Mayor, well stay in close touch with you. Thank you. Apalachicola mayor van johnson. Weve heard from mayors, fire chiefs, Police Chiefs that in many of these places, no shelters and their relationships are with other towns to provide them with the Emergency Care they may need. Theres a video online now of a cavalcade of state troopers trying to get into this region to get in there and try to help organize and do things like that. The northern eye wall which we still have, a very well defined eye, has now made it to interstate 10. It is crossing interstate 10 and on its way towards the alabama georgia border. Were going to see how close we get into alabama to see if you get into this western portion of that eye. Its going to be close. Unbelievable. Its inland and its still got an eye to it. Were going to take a quick break and talk to a woman in panama city who was forced to stay behind because no shelters would take her pet. Plus the latest on the storms track. Well take you live to the areas getting hit hardest right now and tell you where its going next. Youre watching special coverage on msnbc. Your insurance rates skyrocket after a scratch so small you could fix it with a pen. How about using that pen to sign up for new insurance instead . For drivers with accident forgiveness, Liberty Mutual wont raise their rates because of their first accident. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. But prevagen helps your brain with an ingredient originally discovered. In jellyfish. In clinical trials, prevagen has been shown to improve shortterm memory. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Im ali velshi. Youre watching special coverage of Hurricane Michael as it pounds the Florida Panhandle with torrential rains and winds of upward of 150 Miles Per Hour. It made a direct hit over panama city, florida over an hour ago. Officials have urged residents to evacuate but not everybody did and not everybody could. Joining me on the phone is missy who was forced to ride out the storm at home. Missy, why did that happen . Why did you decide to stay . There were a couple of things in play. I have animals. I have pets. Ive got two small dogs, and we have our grand dog who is a 100pound pit bull. Plus i have two cats that would have to come. When it got to the point where we knew this was going to be really bad, i started making phone calls and trying to reserve through, you know, online at pet motels and everything within our area and like within a 200mile radius, all the pet hotels were filled up. I understand nobody wants a 100pound pit bull in the room next to them if theyre afraid of dogs, so i understand that, but hes our hes part of our family so we werent going without him. The other fact that probably most people wont talk about, its the first of the month, we live paycheck to paycheck, and were very blue collar. We pay our rent the first of the month, all my bills, car insurance, everything is paid the first of the month and whats left over is a minuscule amount. Though we could have gone into a motel, it would have created a bigger financial burden. Im glad youre saying that, missy. Youre saying people dont say it. Im glad youre saying it. We just had a general on who said the folks least able to leave are the ones who end up staying and some of that is because the extra tank of gas or the motor or the food that has to be doubt thats not part of your regular Grocery Shopping is not something that a lot of people in this region have excess of. They dont have spare cash lying around for hurricane preparations. And shame on us, i suppose, when we do live here and i suppose we all should have some kind of fund set aside, but most of us dont. We live, you know, a good life but we spend our money paycheck to paycheck. We just didnt really have a reserve without going into debt. At first we thought it was a cat 2. Like i said, by the time that we started getting worried about it and i started making phone calls, then the pets were an issue. So then it was just like, okay, well, were going to make due with where were at because luckily we live on high ground. Im at 26foot elevation. Wow, okay. Thats the only piece of good news youve given me in the last five minutes so im going to leave it at that. I want to end on a high note with you. Thank you for telling us the story and bringing to our attention the difficulty that people have with pets and thank you most importantly for reminding us that when these storms hit its not a luxurioy say lets pack up the car and fill it up with an extra tank of gas. Missy, lets stay in touch so we know youre okay. I want to check in with how people are holding up in the oldest county in florida. Joining me on the phone is the sheriff, david morgan. Whats it like where you are . You didnt get the worst of it but it was pretty bad. Weve been very fortunate. Weve had some rain, some gusts of wind, 35 miles an hour or 45 miles an hour. Weve been extremely blessed in this thing. Weve had minor flooding in some areas but overall were probably well, as far as the hurricane and everything goes we probably fared better than everybody else. The thing is even when theres a minimal amount of damage, it causes a lot of inconvenience because theres power lines down often, trees down, roads blocked, Power Outages. Where are you on that front . We had a little bit of flooding in one of our beach areas, had some water across the road. Fort thickens which is a popular tourist area usually floods even in a Tropical Storm. That occurred and further east of us the weather gets worse. But so far minimal. I was listening to your interview and she should live in our county. We have a specific shelter for those with pets. Hopefully, sheriff, were getting smarter about these things and realizing that the folks have difficulty dealing with these things because of their pets. Did most people stay where you are . Almost everyone did. We really did not give an evacuation notice to folks because weve gone through several bad hurricanes and of course responded to a lot of other locales in assisting in those and even sent folks over for katrina. We have the red cross and the Salvation Army and folks set up to give gas vouchers to people. Weve got a really giving community here. Im very proud to say that. When we have those author suffering through difficult Economic Times or the underprivileged, et cetera, theyll get assistance here. Sheriff, thanks for your time. Im glad that you did dodge that bullet. Our thoughts continue to be with you and the people from florida. Were at the halfhour of our coverage of Hurricane Michael, a storm thats already making history even though it only made landfall about an hour ago. Heres why. Michael is the first category 4 storm to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle ever. It also has the strongest wind for a hurricane in the United States since andrew back in 1992. That storm was a category 5 and was the most destructive hurricane to hit the state for two decades. Winds during andrew were 167 Miles Per Hour. We were close to that today, reaching that speed. We have been trying to bring you shots of the storm but i cannot emphasize enough just how truly powerful this is and the safety of everyone, including our crews out there are a priority. For the latest i want to go to the National Hurricane center, ken graham, with more on what we can expect from this storm. This thing made landfall, was remarkably powerful, more powerful than people thought it would be just two or three days ago. Is it weakening now that its over land . Once these strong systems make landfall you start to see weakening but its going to take some time. When you have winds that strong its going to take some time to bring those down. We expect to see Hurricane Force winds stretching into alabama and georgia and still a Tropical Storm as we move into carolina. That rain on top of winds, you could see trees down and damage well into central georgia. Ken, we were talking about this a few minutes ago. Theres still an eye in this hurricane. Is that significant to you or not . Absolutely. You start seeing an eye, thats still showing us that you have those intense winds right around the center. So we still have an eye across the panhandle, you will see that moving into georgia as well. Its going to take some time to come down and youre going to see that around that eye and moving into georgia is where you can still see some of those damaging winds. This thing is crossing interstate 10 as we speak. What does that mean for major commuters . 1 10 is a major highway across the country. Can people still drive along a highway when theres a hurricane above them . Its incredibly dangerous because you Start Talking about those type of winds still gusting to 100 miles an hour. Thats very dangerous to be driving and it can blow the cars off the road. Heres the other part too. Im starting to look at the clock and eventually were going to be starting to see night fall. Some of those trees coming down, youre not going to be able to see them on the highway so you can hit that debris while youre driving. We need to be careful and probably stay off the roads. Weve been talking to people in apalachicola and we were discussing this earlier, u. S. 98 is impassable for parts of it. For a lot of this part of florida its going to be hard to get around. There are a lot of trees around there and a lot of roads that are going to be impassable. Were not getting all the reports of the flooding yet. We are looking at 7. 7 food of inundation measured in apalachicola. We havent even gotten reports for some of the areas that will see some of that storm surge. We havent gotten those reports and as long as you have that flow onshore, that flow keeps that wind coming. Its going more water depending on the direction even into the evening hours. Some of these areas on that map behind you in the grand bend and the nature coast are not all that heavily populated but as you get south along that road down to tampa, st. Pete, clearwater, theyre going to see flooding and theyve got low lying roads. Yeah. Youre going to see those low lying roads. The other part that worries me in these systems, something ive been talking about for a few days and not just along the coast but some of these rivers i just looked at gauges a bit ago, well inland on the river, miles and miles inland youre seeing sharp rises of that water. Youre seeing some of these areas that normally drain that water out, the storm surge is pushing it in. You can literally be 10, 15 miles inland and have these tributaries overflowing. People have to be careful from this water. Thank you for keeping us up to date on what is going on with this storm. I want to show you some pictures over here. Weve got a satellite image, what i was talking to ken about. This is the eye of the storm. As it goes inland, in theory that eye is supposed to break up and become a storm. Theres still a little bit of an eye to this storm. It is still a hurricane. It is still very, very forceful. Walk over here with me for a second and take a look. This is a threehour thing that were looking at here. You can see that this thing has stayed intact as a storm. Often it will break up before it even gets onto land, so thats why this remains serious for the path its going to continue on. Tallahassee is a place that people are very interested in. Matt bradley is standing by. You can see from this picture, i was in tallahassee the day before yesterday, they have a lot of trees. Matt bradley, thats a concern for the people of tallahassee. They are prepared to lose power, they think its going to happen, but they are very worried about the trees that are going to come down. Yeah, its kind of ironic, ali, because the trees are like the pride and joy of tallahas e tallahassee, something that they love about this city but now its a major threat for them. As you can see, this street that im on, its right in front of Florida State university, its covered in debris. Thats because these trees, beautiful old trees, many of them oaks, are weaponizing themselves, knocking down power lines, damaging cars and homes, and thats a big problem here. I talked with Andrew Gillam a little while ago, the mayor of this city, and he was telling us that this is a major issue for them. Take a listen to what he said. The main concern is the trees that are likely to come down. My city is covered in almost 50 tree cover. That is pretty impressive for an urbanized area like ours. But what that means during a storm event like this is those trees are going to come down on homes and vehicles and on power lines of course. Thats a big issue because of course just today, just a couple of hours ago, we heard that the city of tallahassee declared for the First Time Ever an extreme wind warning. Thats unprecedented. It goes to show, ali, how historic this storm has been so far. Really, the worst is yet to come. Weve heard that the winds are going to be certainsurging in ts to come, probably reaching a peak at about 10 00 p. M. And Hurricane Force winds until 1 00 a. M. You can see theres debris falling around me. About 12 hours from now were probably going to have sunny skies again. You can imagine the violence of this wind subsiding in that amount of time, it goes to show how fast this is moving along. It is a remarkably fast moving storm. Tallahassee as we move inland, its the state capital, the home of the supreme court, the legislature. Its the home of a lot of university students. That is the first major city really thats being hit by this storm. Have they managed are most people staying in tallahassee to wait this out . Yeah, as you can see, theres no one on the road. Im standing in the middle of the street. Theres nobody here or on any of these streets. You cant see it right now but im standing right in front of the Florida State university, the main campus here. Almost all the students appear to be gone. Really, a lot of people have heeded the mayors evacuation orders and thats what the mayor was saying. When the winds reach 50 Miles Per Hour there will be no rescue operations and the winds are getting up there right now. If youre in your home, if you have an emergency, if you have a medical emergency or if a tree falls on your house, you got to wait until the wind subsides. Were looking at our map of gusts. We look to be seeing gusts at 60 miles an hour in tallahassee right now so youre above that point where people can conduct rescues. As matt says, for tallahassee its going to get worse before it gets better. Matt bradley in tallahassee. Coming up, ill talk to a resident of panama city, florida who is riding out the hurricane in her bathroom. Well be back with that. My moms pain from moderate to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis was intense. I wondered if she could do the stuff she does for us, which is kind of, a lot. And if that pain could mean something worse . People didnt think it was going to be this strong but its still there. It still has an eye and its still a storm. Well have time in the days ahead to scratch our heads, wonder what happened. People are already tweeting me saying how come were not talking about climate change. Were trying to save peoples lives. There will be studies done saying how much worse the storm was because of climate change. That will come in the weeks ahead. For now lets focus on trying to help people and see what were doing with our storm. We still have extreme Wind Warnings in effect which is an extremely rare event. Whole communities are told to shelter in place because of Hurricane Force winds coming over the top of you. Thats happening now as the center of the storm is crossing over i10. The troopers probably have this road completely shut off. Theres likely trees blocking the road in most of this area. Heres a smaller view. The area that was hit the hardest that youre going to see pictures of homes destroyed, looks like a tornado went through, is mexico beach. This is the last rain bands coming through this area. Theyre going to have another two hours or so of daylight before it gets dark, maybe three hours. Were hoping they can get out there a bit and make sure if anyone needs assistance that they can get to those people. Its going to be an awful quiet, eerie night in this area. Theres the eye, the center. This is the center line of the hurricane center. Mariana right now, not fun, northern eye wall, strongest winds are with you right as we speak and thats coming back across interstate 10. Then further to the north, little small towns like steam mill are going to be in the middle of it. I dont think you go through it but its going to be windy and rain hard over the top of you as we go throughout the next couple of hours. I updated my wind map to fast forward further to the north. My general rule of thumb, when you get over 50 Miles Per Hour, thats when youre going to start getting downed tree limbs and Power Outages. Right now were at 60. Bane bridge at 53. Were getting in that borderline area. We have a lot of tree damage, Power Outages and theyre beginning to expand north warwa and albany, georgia later on this evening. Heres the latest from the hurricane center. Well get the next update at 5 00. Well see how much its weakened. Now its down to 155. I like this moving at 15 so whoever is dealing with it doesnt have to deal with it for long. But the other problem with that is that since its still a very intense category 4, it spreads the damage path out with the winds even further. So extreme wind damage is going to be the story through the night. As far as the forecast path, this will be updated at 5 00 p. M. East coast time. Were going to take it towards augusta through tomorrow morning at 8 00 a. M. Still as a Tropical Storm, likely still a hurricane until midnight and then coming down to a Tropical Storm and then well track it through the carolinas at maybe 40, 50 Miles Per Hour, and its going to pour. We have Tropical Storm warnings all the way up through eastern North Carolina and heres that rainfall projection so travel is not going to be fun on i95 up the east coast as we go through tomorrow. Looking at about 3 to 5 inches of rain, not enough to cause extreme flooding but enough to give a lot of headaches. You can get some downed trees. Some of those areas in north and South Carolina just dried out from Hurricane Florence. They dont need to be scared, nothing like florence. Florence was moving at 3 or 4 Miles Per Hour. Florence was a turtle race and miserable. Bill, youll stay with me throughout this. Lets go back to matt bradley whos in tallahassee. Matt . Hey, ali, as you can see we were talking about downed trees, theres actually one a little bit im not sure if you can see it down the street a little bit. This is the first one were seeing around here. Tens of thousands of people are without power and the downed trees are the major problem for here in tallahassee and its just going to get worse. As you were saying earlier, were talking about Hurricane Force winds increasing as the evening goes on and continuing to add strength probably until about 1 00 a. M. This is a fast moving hurricane, going at more than 13 miles an hour. Thats about what a regular person runs at or a little faster than that. So its a storm that is going to be dumping a lot of water and putting up a lot of wind but its going to be moving very, very quickly. You can expect that the people who are here, still here, sheltering in place, theyre going to not have to be holed up for quite so long. Still, this could be a catastrophic hurricane and one of historical proportions. I mentioned that extreme wind warning, the first time tallahassee has ever issued that and thats when the extreme wind goes above 130 miles an hour. Ali . Thanks very much, matt bradley for us in tallahassee. Hundreds of thousands of people fled Port Saint Joe and other parts of the Florida Panhandle ahead of Hurricane Michael. Once the storm has passed many of them are going to try and return along with thousands of relief workers and volunteers and theyre going to need a place to stay. Airbnb is trying to help them out. The Online Hosting Service has activated its open Homes Program where hosts in certain regions can let displaced residents, relief workers and volunteers stay in their homes free of charge. It did the same when Hurricane Florence hit the carolinas last month. Joining me to talk about this is kim ruby, global head of social impact and philanthropy at airbnb. Kim, how does this work . Were joined by a panama City Resident who has been riding out the storm in her home. Whats the situation for you right now . Its still real windy. Its come down from the main eye wall of 140 but theres lots of damage in my neighborhood. All right. What made you decide to stay . Well, im a seasoned florida resident. Ive lived in panama city my whole life. We werent quite expecting it to get quite so strong so quick, but i live in a pretty high area outside of the flood zone and in a brick home, so we felt safe. Do you regret staying or are you okay . No, were okay. I lost my back porch and my carport. Probably doesnt surprise you with 150mileanhour winds, right . Probably didnt surprise you much that you lost your carport . No, it didnt surprise me. It was quite interesting to watch. Yeah, no kidding. Whats your sense of what happens next . Are you are you do you have what you need to ride it out for a few days . I assume youve lost power . Oh, yeah, we lost power about 10 00. Yeah, we got prepared. We have lots of food and we have lots of water and my parents who live up the street have an airstream so we can cook food if necessary if it stays out for a while. Weve been watching panama city all day of how many people stayed and how many people left . Did most of your neighbors stick around or did they leave . Most of my neighbors stuck around. Its, you know, a lot of my neighbors are sick and dont have a lot of money so they couldnt really afford to get out. Battened down as much as we could. This is what ive heard from a few people. Its something we discuss with every one of these hurricanes. It seems so obvious. Why didnt you just leave your house. I had a woman tell me, i dont have money. I pay my bills on the first of the month and live paycheck to paycheck. The extra gas, the accommodation. It does go through peoples mind. For the rest of us saying, why didnt you leave, folks have to think about that. Yeah, its pretty rough if you dont have extra money. Most of my next bills paychecks got spent up on hurricane supplies. Yeah, weve heard that from a few people. Sarah, we hope you stay safe. Stay in touch with us so that we know youre safe and riding out the storm in panama city. According to bill karins, the worst of it is behind you now. Please stay safe. Sarah shelley in panama city.
