Subway attack. Happening right now, a rally in support of the president in washington, d. C. , and a protest again a state confederate statue in west virginia. Hans nichols is in the richmond event. Were going to head to virginia where the groups are facing off. Hans nichols is right in the middle of things. Its a little quieter, whats going on . Reporter this protest is all but over. Before this was crowded with counterprotesters an protesters. The counterprotesting outnumbering those for the robe robert e. Lee statue basically 101. We have some conversations winding down. We caught up with some folks and theyre engaged in some pretty respectful conversation trying to understand both sides. Yelling and screaming, like i said before, its not it doesnt do anything. It doesnt help matters. People arent thinking clearly. When people like this man and myself can have a conversation like this, thats what it is. I dont look at a statue and say this man this man was against slavery, it has less to do with that. He was in his time. Alex, at this point its mostly winding down. It has the feel almost as a Church Picnic thats been dissipating and has all but wrapped up. We did see one arrest across the way here. The robert e. Lee statue is right there. Its still standing. Youll get a sense here for just how Little Police presence there was there is at this time. Obviously theyre prepared for much more. You can see some riot police over there. Everyone is kind of standing down. This all seems that its over. Ill send it back to you and see whats happening down in washington. We are definitely going to get to mike to get the latest from there in just a moment. But first staying in washington, of course, new reaction today to the president s latest moves on immigration, including that controversial sitdown with top congressional democrats. Do you have buyers remorse for your early and strong support of President Trump . I have to say no. I think i made the right decisions at the time that i made them and im asking the president now to recall the commitments that hes made, keep them, so that he can keep his base. Even if we part company in a great big way on imgramigration still want to move the rest of his agenda. Congressman, thank you for being with me, sir. Id like to ask you a couple of questions. Your response first to congressman king. Also, can you clarify your position on this issue . I have read your statement, but im not sure what you want to see done. Well, i guess, alex, to start out with, yesterday was my 72month anniversary for being in the congress. Ive said throughout that 72 months its pretty hard to defend nothing. So if what the administration is doing pushes congress, which has a clear constitutional duty to regulate naturalization, which is immigration, to finally do something since its been 31 years, yay. Ive looked at both of the bills, the democrats are calling theirs the d. R. E. A. M. Act, the republican one they talk about the three basic similar things. I think theres plenty there to agree on. Its a good first step for immigration. And so im looking forward to an want to say thanks. If the fact that the president is meeting with mr. Schumer and miss pelosi, if that gets us moving on taking the first step as far as the daca folks, then yay, lets put something on the floor, let everybody vote and let everybody judge where their vote is. You do talk about the 800,000 immigrants who will be affected by the decision that Congress Makes or the lack thereof, but that includes those serving in the military, working professional students, other contributing members of our society. So to that end, how do you want to see this resolved . Heres the thing. This will be the most naive statement you probably hear probably all year. If you scrub the politics out of this part of immigration in particular, the solutions are not hard. If it benefits the country, if you have people who are serving in the military, if you have people who are college graduates, if you have people who are productive members of the workforce, that sounds like a positive thing to me. Now, they have to earn that status. The two bills, is it five years, ten years, something in between . The bottom line is if it benefits the country, why is it such a hard thing to vote yes or no on. Ill have to let that be rhetorical because im not in congress, but i will say lets move on to your read of the president s meeting with Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi. Is it a betrayal as many of his backers and republicans are saying . Well, you know what, i dont know because i try not to you know, in this business when your house has plenty of windows in it, youre a little hesitant to throw rocks at either side of the fence. But i will say, this if it gets people in gear and gets things moving, the history of Congress Taking the bull by the horns is not excellent, shall we say, and therefore, it is america. Last time i checked, you can have dinner with whoever you want. So if this gets folks moving in terms of bringing something to the floor, then i hope they have some more i hope they have some more dinners together. How do you feel about the deal reportedly discussed by the president and the democrats would not include funding for the border wall. Do you think thats a fair concession to make . Well, first of all, lets talk about the, quote unquote, wall. Its 74 miles. I mean seriously, 14 miles is replacing substandard stuff in san diego. 60 miles is actually new barrier in the upper rio grande valley. My First Response is seriously, all of this for 74 miles . Theres still well over 1,000 miles of uncontrolled border in the southwestern u. S. Thats before you start counting canada and the ports. So im not a big believer in the wall is a hill to die for. Bad pun, i i understand. But in terms of, its like, listen, put that vote up first. Im happy to vote on both of them and see where were at. If you look at the history of combining a whole bunch of immigration issues in one bill, you have to look no farther back than the senate bill to see youll find something for everybody to hate. The daca thing fine, and let them vote on a separate bill. Lets quit mixing too many ingredients into the recipe and let everybody be jujdged straigt up. Are there any possible compromises on daca that you are aware of that you see as getting a shot through congress . Yeah, i think when you look at the two bills, both sides have done sidebysides. Were talking about degrees of variation in terms of how long before you earn a permanent resident status, how long you have to go to school, those sorts of things. I think those are all imminently doable. The question is can you depoliticize it enough to make some policy that makes sense for starters with the daca folks. All right, congressman, republican from nevada, come see me again. Thank you so much. Okay, thank you. Lets go back to washington and the site of a rally we are keeping a close eye on today, who the supporters of the president are calling the mother of all rallies. Mike is there in the middle of things for us. Whats happening so far, mike . Reporter alex, there are a lot of Trump Supporters here. Ive talked to several of them. Continuing on that issue of immigration, ive asked all of them whether their support is wavering towards President Trump in the wake of what prominent conservative pundits have called a cave on the issue of daca, immigration, amnesty as they phrase it. Theyre still four square behind the president , including the speakers here at this undoubtedly protrump rally. Theres no question about it. Now, having said that, the organizers here are trying to emphasize that this is not an altright rally, it is not an altleft rally, it is a unity rally. They are stressing the fact that there are people here from all walks of life. The crowd is somewhat smaller than they were permitted for. They were permitted for about 3,000. Ill eyeball it and say its somewhat short of that. But there are many people here strongly in support of President Trump. There are also some counterprotesters as well. Just a handful. Some of them quiet, some of them with bull horns. But the people who organized this rally, alex, make no mistake about it, very conscious of what happened in charlottesville. In a sense this is sort of an ant anticharlottesville rally for pro Trump Supporters. Mike, thank you so much from the national mall. Find out how at sanfranciscodignity. Com. Did you make enough mistakes yourself to lose the election without any of the other things you talk about . Well, i will say no, matt, i dont think that will surprise you. But there were frustrating moments, and i do write about some. And i personally believe that our press, which is such an essential part of our country, our democracy, has to take some hard look at how it covered what the first reality tv candidate. Hillary clinton there assessing her 2016 loss saying there were a lot of outside factors, and not necessarily anything she could have done that may have helped her win states like michigan, a reliably blue state to turned to donald trump in november. Joining me to talk about that and more, democratic congressman dan kilde from michigan. Thanks for joining us on a saturday. So your thoughts on Hillary Clintons book, the interviews shes given, the factors shes citing in her loss. She thinks theres nothing else that she could have done. Do you agree . Well, i think Hillary Clinton was a good candidate and i certainly supported her but i dont agree that theres nothing that we as a Democratic Party or her campaign could have done. We lost michigan by 9,000 votes. There was not the kind of clarity of message about the economic fortunes, the concerns that people have about their future. I think there was a lack of clarity in our message. And i think from now on we have to just learn from that and we have to focus on how we make sure that people understand that the democratic agenda is one that gives them opportunity, that gives this many a better life. I dont think that was clear. Do you think democrats took michigan for granted . Do you think the Clinton Campaign and Hillary Clinton should have been more aggressive in that state . I dont think it was so much taking any state for granted. It was, like i said, the lack of clarity in message. There was enough time spent in michigan, thats for sure. I think there might have been a question about whether wisconsin should have been given greater priority. We can sort of monday morning quarterback that. But the only thing that democrats can control is not what the media says, although i think it was a balanced approach to the campaign, not what the other candidate says, not what the other party says. The thing we can control is how we present our vision for america and how we have a credible and authentic voice telling the American People that if you elect us, if you put us in a position to advance an agenda, this is what it will mean to you. If that had been done in michigan, i think more clearly, i think we would have won the state. Theres no doubt in my mind. 9,000 votes is a pretty small margin there. As an elected democrat, do you think Hillary Clinton hurts or helps the Party Going Forward . Does a higher profile help or hurt democrats in your opinion . I honestly just think looking in the Rearview Mirror is not good for anyone. That is an election that is over with. We have to focus 100 of our energy on the challenge that is before us. And i agree with you and that is my question. Do you think Hillary Clinton helps the democrats Going Forward . You know, i just think anything that is a distraction from us talking about the agenda were working on right now is not helpful. But heres the thing, everyone has a right to tell their story. Previous candidates, even Bernie Sanders, he had his own book and jimmy carter had a book, they all write books. Its a part of the historical record and its an important voice. But i think its important to distinguish what is her legitimate description of what happened and what democrats need to be focusing our attention on as we move forward. We can have more than one conversation in this country and i dont think the two should be confused. And we should point out obviously these books are the personal narrative of the person that they are reflecting so theres that. Lets move on to the very latest regarding daca. Its been going back and forth between the democratic minority leaders and the president. Lets take a listen to these comments by Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer picked up by an open mike. He likes us. He likes me, anyway. Look, what we said was exactly accurate. Heres what i told him. I said, mr. President , youre much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left. If you have to step in one direction, youre boxed. He gets that. Oh, its going to work out and itll make us more productive too. What do you think of those comments there . Do you agree with the content of them and do you also agree that he should be as encouraged as he is . Well, this is what i this is where i think i align myself with the analysis that senator schumer offered. When we have an opportunity to work with President Trump to advance the things that the American People would benefit from, whether its daca or a big infrastructure bill or better policies on education, if the president of the United States, whatever he said the day before or is going to say the day after, if on one day hes willing to work with us to do something thats important to the American People, im all in and i think thats what senator schumer is saying. Now, the president seems to not be a very ideological person. You know, he seems to be he calls himself a deal maker. So far weve actually as democrats been the folks that have been able to actually put things together. If we can find a way to work with him, like senator schumer said, on one day hes working with us and the next day he isnt, we should shouldnt preclude getting something important done if hes working with us. But does that bolster his standing there . Do some democrats disagree with that because of political reasons . What i hear from people back home is work on the big problems that we face. Donald trump is the president of the United States. I dont like the fact that hes the president , dont get me wrong. I dont think hes fit for the job. But hes the president of the United States right now. And the American People, this country cant just sort of booid our time until we have another president ial election to take on the big problems that we face. The cards are on the table. And if im true to my obligation to the people that i represent, im going to find every way i can to fix the big problems that we have to create more opportunity. If that means working with donald trump and if that somehow accrues to his benefit, thats secondary to what should be the first thing we think about every morning when weet up and go to work and thats how do we make things better for the American People. How do i make things better for the people of flint, saginaw and bay city. Thats my focus. I hope every member of congress thinks about that. I like hearing that. Representative kilde, thanks for your time. The london subway bombing, that massive man hunt may have hit pay dirt. And fired up, are Trump Supporters really this angry . Been trying to prepare for this day. And im still not ready. The reason im telling you this is that there will be moments in your life that. Youll never be ready for. Lets bring in republican strategist noel nikpower, Peter Emerson and tamra keith, White House Correspondent and host of the npr politics podcast. Big welcome to all three of you. Lets go ladies first, noelle. How bad is this for the president. His sitdown with the democrats, is that a betrayal . The republicans couldnt get anything done so what was he left to do . The president wants to make a deal, he wants action. If he cant get action from his own party, whats he going to do . So he went to the democrats. Obviously they received him and are actually working on something. It looked like pelosi was happy. Schumer came out and said they made great progress and are having great talks. Once again, when trump left that meeting, he assured everybody that he was going to get some of his agenda passed as well for his base not to worry. Theres some people that theres some of his base or some people that support the president , that they dont even want him talking to democrats. But in reality, we have to Work Together on things to get things done. The republicans, we have the house, we have the senate and they couldnt strike a deal so what was trump supposed to do . I applaud him for going to schumer and pelosi. Okay. So, peter, are the democrats or at least schumer and pelosi, are going to live to regret to reaching out to the president . Do you think its a bad move on their part . Not at all. Ive always believed from day one that if the democrats just simply flattered President Trump, which she seems very susceptible to flattery, they could end up getting some things that they want done. The problem on this daca deal is that ultimately in the house of representatives, theres enough of a majority that although there may be some solutions for the 800,000 young people, d. R. E. A. M. Ers, the house is likely to put in some very, very punitive restrictive measures thats going to be very hard for pelosi or schumer to back ultimately. Well have to see what comes from all that. Lets talk about Hillary Clinton, who we all know has been back out in the public eye promoting her new book at the 2016 election. Heres a quick peek at some of her interviews. I think that laws may have been broken, Campaign Finance laws, for example. The federal agent registration laws. I think its probably bigger than watergate because it is about the future. Well, i think the determining factor was the intervention by comey on october 28th. Did you make enough mistakes yourself to lose the election without any of the other things you talk about . Well, i will say no, matt. I dont think that will surprise you. So, tamra, you also got to speak with secretary clinton. Between your own interview and the clips from the ones we just heard, does it sound to you like shes taking enough responsibility for her loss, or is she making excuses or how are you reading all this . Well, in the interview that i did with her, she talked a lot about mistakes she made, about the email server, about various things about, misreading the electorate and not being able to properly communicate with an electorate that she knew was very angry but she didnt know how to speak to that in a way that resonated in the same that both Bernie Sanders and donald trump were able to really reach those voters. But when i asked her what her greatest regret was, she said it was losing. Now, the interviews i think are a little different from the book, which ive also read. The book throughout has Hillary Clinton apologizing, talking about mistakes. I mean really throughout the book. But also throughout the book she also talks about james comey and the media and various other factors that she says contributed, obviously russia as well. So overall the mood, you would say for your interview, was what, anger . Was it relief . Happiness . Bitterness . Heres the thing. Shes not running for president and so the sort of like apprehension about talking to a reporter that she experienced and exhibited throughout the campaign, that wasnt there. And, you know, at one point i asked her in this book youre more real, you talk about your emotions, you talk about your feelings. In your past books it was all a recitation of facts. She said, well yeah. Im done. Im not running. This is different. So candor. Yes. There absolutely was candor. Obviously she is she continues to be not happy with the way the election turned out. Shes deeply concerned, she says, about the way the country is going, the way its being led. Shes concerned about whats happening in the state department and about President Trumps leadership. She says hes being played by Vladimir Putin and kim jongun and she yells at the tv a lot. But, you know, this interview process, all these interviews shes doing, the book that she wrote, its all part of a process. Its all part of her telling her story. Yeah, well i know that she has said that secretary of state Rex Tillerson has yet to reach out to her so she finds that rather mystifying. What do you think, noelle, too many excuses from disconnect cl secretary clinton . One of the things that i noticed is she looked so rested, so relaxed. Her new haircut was really flattering on her. I wish, and im sure a lot of democrats had wished that they had so much of a relaxed hillary. I really think that a lot of the democrats dont really care. She lost. I think theyre very upset about that. And i really think that its kind of too little too late. Sure, its nice to write a book on why you think you lost and some of the factors that played into it, but the bottom line is a lot of democrats are very upset that she lost and its almost like salt in an open wound. Peter, you may have heard me asking this of representative kilde, and that is are there democrats that just wish Hillary Clinton would go away, step out of the spotlight so they dont have to keep relitigating 2016 and is that a fair statement . Theyre not just wishing, theyre praying that she and the book and all of the publicity will just go away because the title of the book should have been either i apologize or answering the question she posed, i screwed up. So to have it relitigated, does the Democratic Party, does america absolutely no good at all. Okay, guys. I want to play a sound bite from the white house and Sarah Huckabee sanders regarding jemele hill and the whole situation with the espn tweet. So heres that. Ill get your Quick Reaction on the other side. I think it is a fireable offense based on the standard that espn has set themselves by saying that people that go too far and make political comments have been suspended from their own network. I think that that is a consistency that they should probably focus on. Appropriate comments from the white house podium . Peter, youre laughing so ill let you go first real quick. Its so fantastic because in fact if you apply that metric, then the president himself should be fired. He just told england that they screwed up and they werent doing their job properly. So its not just inappropriate, its offensive. Tamra . Well, i think many another press secretary would just back off, not answer the question, say thats not my position to say this from the lectern, but this is an administration where cable is king and President Trump has been tweeting about espn, so of course the press secretary is talking about it. Noelle, your thoughts real quick. You know what, im just sad that were talking about espn. That is the one channel we all go to just to check sports facts and football. Mitch mcconnell and paul ryan are saying we basically welcome your proposal but we dont know if it will get the votes or not. I think a lot of republicans were taken aback by the president s consummate deal making here. I think he got tired of working with the republicans and now hes working with democrats on this issue. But whether he can actually get this through or whether this is more just an optics and kind of a political solution for now, it remains to be seen. Seema, lets move now to the white houses feud with espn. Sarah Huckabee Sanders ratcheting up her criticism once again from the Briefing Room podium calling the network hypocritica hypocritical. Is this more of the same kind of attacks against Media Outlets or do you think this feels a little different . I feel like weve seen this throughout the campaign and throughout the administration. They have made very clear that they name names when they are unhappy with people, and theyre unhappy with particular reporters and particular outlets. We saw this on the campaign constantly. The president would call on reporters by name from the podium. The audience would turn around and boo at you so this is nothing new. I dont think its surprising. But why do you, josh, think that the president and the white house are going so strongly after this after a week of gaining political momentum, the president s hurricane response, his outreach to the democrats on immigration. In other words, why is espn even being talked about in the white house Briefing Room . Well, i think the president and his team do like some of these cultural wars. It kind of gets their base behind them, it gets them rallying support. And i also think you have a president who, you know, watches a lot of television, consumes a lot of media criticism and doesnt like slights. When he feels like someone is taking a provocative swipe at him, he normally responds. Hes not one to sit pack and do nothing. So i think its a mix of, a, he does not like the criticism and, b, the white house sees this as a good fight to rally their base. I dont think they mind it. The repetitive questions in the media room about the espn tiff. Seema, you aheard ambassador nikki hail he speak in the Briefing Room. She says hes going to slap the right people, hug the right people and come out with the u. S. Being very strong in the end. Do you know how hes preparing since his last meeting with World Leaders at a time of certainly escalating tensions with north korea . I think certainly all eyes will be on the president as he speaks to the u. N. Both in terms of there are multiple crises happening overseas. We just had another terror attack in london, we have north korea, the firing of missiles over japan. I mean so theres a lot of Foreign Policy issues that need to be dealt with. The other question i have, he has long been critical of the amount of money that the u. S. Spends on the u. N. Onions pea ue keeping so i wonder if he brings that up saying other countries should do their part. Before i let you go, josh, to you how critical is this new addition to the mueller russia team, the Investigative Team that your colleagues at politico have just learned about. An attorney apparently with extensive Money Laundering expertise and experience. Whats this all about . I think it was a pretty serious juggernaut of lawyers here that mueller has put together. This is number 17. This is a lawyer that has extensive experience in Money Laundering. He worked on the wolf of wall street even. So what you see in this unit that hes put together is some of the top subject Matter Experts on a whole range of issues that he seems to be investigating. I think it must show some concern to the trump folks to know the team is getting bigger an hes putting together people who have experience taking down pretty substantial figures. Yeah, okay. Seema mehta, josh, come see me again, guys. Thanks. The end of a 20year odyssey for nasa. Why it was better to let this one burn out than just fade away, next. Signal from the spacecraft is gone and within the next 45 seconds, so will be the spacecraft. The reaction there at Nasas Jet Propulsion Laboratory in pasadena, california yet after the cassini spacecraft made its final voyage into the planet saturn. Cassini was launched 20 years ago with the goal of studying several of saturns moons and the ringed planet itself. Joining me now, julie webster, Operations Manager for the cassini spacecraft. Im going to tell folks, julie, you and i talked through the entire commercial break leading up to this because i am such a space geek and i am feeling sad today. I know a lot of people are. You said it will probably kick in for you, too, that this odyssey has ended. But yesterday, what was that like for you . You know, at the time we were just focused on getting it done, just finishing out, making sure that everything was good to the end. About three hours before you saw the final pictures we made a joke in the room, and i tore up a contingency procedure to make sure that we got those last three hours of data. We just wanted to make sure we got it through to the end. It was over too fast. Im still absorbing it. My team is still absorbing it. There is a lot of people that are lot of people in mourning. I know you got an extra 30 seconds that you didnt think you would get in terms of information being beamed back. But youve called cassini the perfect spacecraft. Why . Because the experience and design, people had 30 years of experience when they were designing cassini. Jpl, they are all of the voyagers and all of the Mariner Program and the galileos and magellans. They had all that experience that went in to the design of the cassini spacecraft. We had my atlo team not my atlo, Warren Moores team, we had people with 20, 30 years on the floor building cassini. And they built a brick house. And as soon as it launched we knew we had a great spacecraft. Even though we spent seven years going to venus, venus, ertarth, jupiter, we spent seven years just trying to get to saturn. We knew we had a great spacecraft and thats why we were able to stay 13 years at saturn. It has been an extraordinary mission. I know that you decided to end it the way you did because you didnt want to contaminate the two moons. So it rather burned up into the saturn atmosphere before plunging into the air. But what did we learn . What do we take from what we learned . Well, theres a whole new ocean worlds programs based on europa at jupiter and based on saturn. We had no ideas these rocky moons could have ice water jets. We used titan as the gravity assist. We went by titan 127 times and took pictures in four different frequency cameras with radar, with insitu measuring. We have hundreds of ph. D theses yet to come. I think our grandchildren are going to be analyzing this data. Okay. The greatest moment for you . Can you give me one in about 30 seconds . Over all these years, is there something that stands out . Well, saturn orbit insertion was the thing i worked on the hardest. We spent tens of thousands of hours building the procedure that had to work and it had to work and it had to have go through every fault protection. We chased every rabbit hole that we could, making the spacecraft selfsufficient so that it could get into orbit. And then the titan probe, dropping titan probe on titan itself. W were the European Space agency. We carried four different frequencies, cameras, radars, everything to try and figure out what was going on with titan. And with inceladus. We still dont know the time of day of saturn. Send Something Else out so we can all watch and love doing so the entire time. Julie webster, you guys are all brilliant, youre all rock stars and thank you so much for everything you brought to us with cassini. Thank you. Crossing the aisle.
