About the final moments before egypt air flight 804 fell off the radar. Smoke was detected in a number of locations inside the aircraft but what caused that smoke is the question. Nbc in paris was the latest on the investigation as well as security measures french officials have in place to reassure citizens following the november attacks and kelly what do we know right now and of course the smoke . The new piece of information. Theres a lot of new information coming out today richard. First to the security aspect of all of this, you know, terrorism being mentioned as a possible cause for this flight has made people nervous. Theyre going to Great Lengths to make people comfortable especially at big events. Theres a lot of big sporting events in this country today, this week and moving through the summer including tonight. A major soccer match at the French National stadium. So new security measures there tonight even as the investigation into why this plane came down continues. And we got new clues to that effect today. These automated messages received in the last few minutes of this flight. There were two warning messages indicating some sort of problem with the cockpit windows. And then two more messages smoke alarms essentially. One in a bathroom close to a cockpit and the other in the avionics area underneath the cockpit and then three more alarms going off and then the system goes silent. What do they mean . They could mean a technical fault or explosion or a fire on board but essentially we wont have the complete picture until investigators have those black boxes as well as the plane wreckage. As you know, the search continues out in the eastern mediterranean. The Egyptian Military showing us pictures. The first pictures of the debris they have already found. All very small pieces of debris and unused life jackets and seat parts and plane pieces. What they really want to find, obviously, are the black boxes. A French Navy Vessel is on its way to the area. It can actually listen for the pings coming from the black boxes. It should arrive at the beginning of the week at the very latest. We understand. But just to give you a sense of the time line richard, i covered the air asia crash out in indonesia back in 2014. Another airbus a320 it went town in the java sea. Within the first 24 to 48 hours searchers were finding debris. It took another ten days or so before they found the tale section and brought it up and had the black boxes and richard they were working in 80 to 10 feet of water. This search is an 8,000 to 10,000 feet. As each day goes by so do the currents. Kelly is in paris for us with the latest. Thank you so much with the new pieces of information we got in today on msnbc. Were also learning more about the victims of flight ms804. He is in cairo where relatives of the victims held an emotional memorial today. The sun has set on another day of the on going search and recovery operation taking place in the mediterranean. So far no indication from the Egyptian Military whether or not they have been able to find that black box that includes both the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. That would be a key piece of the puzzle in trying to determine what happened to flight 804. However the Egyptian Military did release today for the first time some images of the debris collected at sea. Some of the stuff identified with the egypt air logo indicating that that is the debris belonging to the wreckage of that flight. We also saw some personal belongings ib colluding a purse and shoes. Its a very pain staking time for family members. We heard from egypt air that theyll be collecting dna samples from the living family members to try to match it with the remains that are collected to help with the identification process. We have been talking about some of the people that we have learned about including ahmed. He was living in france with his wife and child. He died on that plane. His wife and child now returned to cairo to participate in obviously the identification process here as well. We also learned of the canadian that left hers behind. Egypt air for that matter says its going to hold a Memorial Service for all of its staff, flight crew, as well as the pilot and copilot that perished in that plane that went down over the mediterranean. But in terms of concrete answers, still very few in terms of the on going investigation. Officials here have been very tight lipped about what could have been the reason why the plane has gone down. The country still very much in mourning. A lot of the profiles of the passengers in all the local newspaper here. Today there was a Church Service for one of the victims and no doubt this is a very difficult time as they continue to process and grieve what has happened to their loved ones. Richard. Thank you so much. Nbcs aman there for us in cairo. Were joined by chief security officer. Sean lets go straight to the video. Were just getting those pictures in today of the debris and when you look at the pictures here themselves, what could would you be able to tell if youre down there looking at all of these pieces . You know the physical evidence is such a critically important piece of the investigation. Investigators will be looking for any reminisces of residue, explosive residue and also be k look for how the aircraft actually impacted the water. Did it break up in the sky over the water and flitter out across many miles or did it actually land intact . Theyll be looking for the shell of the aircraft to see if there was an explosion. How that helped to shatter the aircraft. So sean, looks like we have a couple of dozen pieces of debris at least from this video. Look at it specifically for me if you can what do you see if anything from this . You look at the life vest. Theyre typically stored underneath in a case and shell underneath the aircraft seat. That one perhaps was actually deployed which might indicate to investigators that the passengers had an opportunity to actually take them out and prepare them prior to the aircraft going down. And thats going to be part of the key hours now and you may or may not be able to put them together. The smoke. At least two signals went off that indicated that there was smoke somewhere inside the plane. Thats right. So two theories here of course. Is there a sats trofcatastrophi mechanical failure or terrorist incident. The smoke doesnt make that determination. There was a small explosion intended to be a larger explosion that caused a fire. Something of that nature. So that doesnt indicate whether it was terrorism or not. From an investigative perspective you have to pursue both lines of investigation simultaneously. You don want to lose the element of time. You have to select evidence as its available and if you dont if you wait too long to start to go out and do interviews and look at video tapes youre going to lose key pieces of information. Lets go back to that tick to be that we have right now that came in and it shows here first of all the two indications of smoke. And then after that, it has the indications coming from the windows. I dont know if we can put that up again but it has the five key processes that happen. There it is. The fixed window sensor. And then i dont know necessarily what the other two are specifically. Yeah. So from an investigative perspective youre talking about a three minute period of time. This system is streaming data when the faults go off. To look at the time line of the faults and the activity within the aircraft and the aircraft disappearing from radar. Theyre connected incidents. Not clear if its mechanical or terrorism but the smoke inside the cabin is indicative that something catastrophic happened. It may have been a fire or small explosion or electrical component. Investigators will be interviewing and family members will be interviewing people on the ground. Lets talk about that. People on the ground and family members right . This plane hit four Different Countries in its work day. Not uncommon here for this aircraft in this part of the world. What would you be looking at . From a investigative perspective you want to look at opportunities somebody may have had to get something on board the aircraft. Youre looking at people who are servicing the aircraft. Maintenance people. Those that are involved in the catering for example. Who may have had an opportunity to get a payload into the aaircraft but youre also looking at viindividuals that m have had an opportunity to carry something on to the aircraft. You to look back over many countries and many days. One thing that makes this so complex is the time line and the number of opportunities over the course prior to this incident. The number of hands that touched it right . Absolutely right. Have touched this plane. So you could get one piece of information and youre an expert at this. You get one. What is that one piece of information that youre looking for next that might be in the black boxes or might be physical . I think the voice recorders are going to be a key piece here. If theres smoke theyre going to be discussing what happened whether they heard an explosion, somebody a crew member might have said, communicated there was an explosion or somebody may have seen flames coming out of the wall. We have to leave it here but i have to ask you here sean what is the im not too sure about what were hearing about this part that you have seen so far in the data weve got . Yeah, you know, im not really sure. This whole thing is so complex. Were still relatively short in the investigative period. Were just talking about just a couple of days here. Stlost mu theres so much more. The most important piece is the physical evidence. Debris from the plane and the two black boxes. You wont be able to rule out mechanical or terrorism at this point unless you get to the physical evidence thats going to be critical. Thank you so much. We also have the Deputy Editor for yahoo news and in washington doug, the former National Press secretary to the Democratic Congressional campaign committee. The news thats coming in is during an interview on cnn with jake tapper, Bernie Sanders, sharpening his war of words with the dnc. Lets take a listen and ill get your reaction. In florida, are you with him or are you with her opponent . Well, clearly i favor her opponent. His views are much closer to mine than hers and let me also say this in all due respect to the current chairperson if elected president she would not be reappointed to be chair of the dnc. Doug what is happening and how big of a deal is this for Bernie Sanders right now doubling down on his criticism and not being in sy, this c with the dnc. I dont think Debbie Wassermanschultz has much to worry about. Theres some animosity there based off of a sense that the system was rigged in some way. I think thats nonsense. The fact is is that all of these primaries and caucuses have been competitive. He won a lot. He lost a lot but i think Bernie Sanders is at the point in the campaign where hes trying to figure out, you know, why hes still in there and this gives him something to shoot at. Gives his supporters something to motivate them with and i think that, you know, its unfortunate that were at this point but at the end of the day its not going to really matter. Doug, thank you. Dan, when we look at this, is this a personal grudge or is this an institutional grudge . Because it could be a mix of both certainly . It probably is a mix of both. For people who know Bernie Sanders and who have worked with him on the hill and who respect him, they say he is an intensely competitive guy. He really wants to win. And so i think some of that is personal. And hes trying to harness the passion of his supporters. They have a lot of passion but theyre not ultimately winning so hes trying to do everything he can to take that passion and try to get him to win in california and then to the convention to be able to have as much leverage as he can once he gets there. Donald trump used to be in the space where the question was i dont think anybody is going to forget what he just said but people are forgetting what he just said. In this case are people forgetting what he just said . Bernie sanders now and Debbie Wassermanschultz. Its fair to say that no election was more rigged. More obstacles put in the path of a candidate than what Bernie Sanders found in his path with regard to the chairwoman of the dnc and the dnc itself. The timing of debates. The number of debates. The delegate allocation process. He has a lot to complain about and his supporters have a lot to complain about and i dont think theyll forget when all is said and done with this primary. Is this foreshadowing what well see during this convention. No, i dont think so. Its a very heated competition between clinton and obama and theres a lot of raw emotions there and when it was all said and done and it was over with president obama went on to have a landslide election victory. So i think that, look on both sides, i think on the republican side its not as if all things are okay. Youve got them. And cant stand the idea of donald trump as their nominee and i think that look both parties are kind of in that phase where theyre trying to c consolidate around the nominees. Maybe it will happen in cleveland. I wouldnt want to be there approximate though. That was the sweetable statement there. When we look at the theres a theme out there that says behind the scenes. The Sanders Campaign theyre ready come convention is what doug is saying here. Theyre going to come together. Yet those actions are coming in words and not only interviews burt an intention to do more than come together. Which of the two is it . Is it going apart or coming together . I think sometimes things have to go apart before they come together and i fundamentally at the end of the day agree with doug that the Democratic Party will come together and that most sanders voters at the end of the day will make a rational choice about the election. They don want to get for whatever, as much anger as they may have toward the establishment and toward Hillary Clinton right now, they dont want to get it and at the end of the day they will come home and for the most part they will support Hillary Clinton. The question is when that happens and whether there is a moment at the convention that allows for them to then start to come home. I know were starting about elasticity of messaging, of platform and i will go to you on this and as we shift over to trump as we finish up the segment and that is he now as you were hearing, theres a possibility that he could not approximate the guy that said im going to pay for my own campaign but he could be the guy that said i am going to let you and others pay for my campaign. Can he walk back what he has been saying so consistently for months and months . He has for the duration. He has. So i dont know why this would be any different. Right. He might have a board in the back just saying over under. The rules of gravity. The laws of nature do not apply to donald j. Trump when it comes to electing a president in 2016. Hes going to have to walk back that statement certain degree and already telegraphed that hes going to. And 2016. Doug has actually given me the laugh chart there. I appreciate all three of you. What she would say to olympians about competing amid the zika virus outbreak. Theyre monitoring nearly 300 wil with evidence of a zika virus infection in the United States and surrounding territories. Joining me now is Public Health specialist. So first off theyre saying if you follow the rules you should be okay. Is she correct . She is correct. So you have to remember a couple of things. One this is largely a mosquito transmitted disease. If you take your precautions and stay indoors to the degree thats possible youre going to be protected from transmission. The cdc this weekend, i was just mentioning that theyre monitoring a certain number of women. Does that number surprise you . What are you looking for in that piece of information that came from the cdc . So yesterday the cdc released the first of what are going to be weekly reports looking at zika virus cases in the United States. One thing that has been misreported by others in the media is we have seen a threefold increase in zika cases. What really happened is how the zika cases are being tested and reported so in the past cdc had only been reporting those that had symptoms and now everybody that tests positive and thats thats where we see this shift at all as we get closer to the summer because it will get warmer. More humidity in some spaces. So our primary concern is for the gulf coast so everywhere from texas down to florida. And thats based on where the mosquitos are found throughout the year so thats the part of the country were most worried about. If you talk about the gulf coast were making it to texas and no farther west but it does have some the areas in the south there. They will have the right humidity and right mosquitos for mosquitos. Theres the possibility. When you look at the other maps shown there are so going farther north. Even as far north as new york city a lot of it has to do with whether a related mosquito can transmit as well. One thing that is reassuring though is two of the viruss that are related to zika virus, we have only seen outbreaks of that really along the gulf coast. We expect zika to behave simi r similarly. One we want to see a peak in the number of cases but part of what its doing you want to see a peak and then it come down and then you also a lot of what the cdc is doing is monitoring women that had infections during pregnancy to see what happens to their infants so thats the Key Information pause right now we know that there is a risk of other birth defects if a woman gets pregnant or has zika virus infection during pregnancy but we dont know what percentage of them will have a child with a birth defect. Its low but we don know how low. Thank you. My pleasure. New information about the final moments before egypt air flight 804 plunged into the mediterranean. Its hoped theyll offer new clues of what transpired in the final moments before it disappeared from radar. Good afternoon from cairo where the Egyptian Military made significant finds and released some video of the finds. The first images of the debris. The video starts with a small inflatable which has obviously been laufshlged from a larger vehicle and you can see in the front a naval officer picking something out of the clothing and shoes, bags, life preservers. Theres no parts found in this. Its really quite significant for a number of reasons. First of all it will give investigators some idea of where the main body of the plane might be located. Obviously theres strong currents and this debris will have moved several miles but it will help locate the main part of the plane. Secondly theyll be looking at the debris itself to see are there any distinguishing features. For example any scorch marks caused by fires. Any smoke marks because we understand from that data relief that there was smoke at the very least in the planes cockpit and thirdly we will understand possibly from this debris how big the debris field is because if they find another one 100 miles away then that could indicate that the plane, in fact, broke up in midair and did not enter the water intact. It would strongly suggest that the plane entered the water in one piece. Its around 5,000 square miles and you have u. S. Search planes, three of those as well as french naval vessels and italian, greek and prbritish vessels all searching in the area so the search is intense but the seabed at that point is 10,000 feet deep. Nearly 2 miles deep so really the prospect of finding it or the black box flight recorders which are located in its tail section. The chances of finding them soon is pretty remote but at the least, this about the smoke and the cockpit and this debris will be a start for investigators. The search today goes on. Back to you richard. Bill, thank you so much. Reporting for us from cairo. We talked about these sorts of incidents many times in the past year and as you have seen the pictures of the new debris you also heard about the two reports of smoke being detected in a bathroom near the cockpit in another area. What stands out to you first. Well, i consider this to be a Major Development in terms of what we know so far because it depends on what kind of smoke it was. You dont have to have open flame to have an incredibly difficult thing to deal with. That insulation burning smoke can be very very difficult to deal with it. Burns your eyes. You cant see and and you dont have a way of fighting it. It may be in terms of whats happening to your airplane. Smoke in the cockpit is very very important. The ventilation system is enclosed and how would it filter out smoke if at all. It doesnt really filter it out. I suppose technically it does but it would take quite a lot of time and youd have to have the source stop before you could get anything to change this is a very scary situation. In the years of you being a pilot how many times did you have smoke in the plane. Zero. Absolutely zero. Its something you train for you have your oxygen masks and goggles and all kind of ways of dealing with it. We never did that in my plane. Were looking at three minutes before reports of smoke happened and then the plane unfortunately meeting its end. Three minutes was too short. 15 minutes might be typical before some system might be severely damaged and so hes looking at 3 versus 15. Whats your sense of his analysis . Thats accurate to be looking at what in the world could be going on to create this result that fast. So, you know, this cockpit is almost directly over the come apartment where you have all kind of electrical items in there. Thats part of the airplane and the nervous system and if the smoke was coming from there theres no way to do anything about it. Besides that you dont have time. Three minutes is in a way a very very fast result and its a long time and a lifetime. Youre going to go through all kinds of things trying to stop it. Thank you so much. Absolutely. Were talking about a primary so he would prefer another democrat not choosing the republican. And theres been so much attention. This weeks Nra Convention saw voters of every stripe and every party descend on louisville kentucky and those voters could help decide the direction of the election. Tony covered the convention and he had the chance to sit down with a lively round table of politically diverse gun owners. Joins us right here at new york city. And its quickly diverse and you can really see the political issue. And its a political form and its you can handle it a ban on assault style weapons. Theres a question of whether donald trump will go back on the promise. He was more like Hillary Clinton put do gun owners on that democratic side, do they trust her . Do they think her positions have their interests in mind . So i sat down with a round table of them and i said will you come over to Hillary Clinton . Will unity come to the forefront . And take a listen to what they said. I want to two to jetson and patrick. Your bernie supporters. Bernie is running out of room to lockup the nomination. He could be pushed out. If hilary is the nominee can you get behind her . Thats the longest lever i ever pulled. You mean to vote for her would be the longest lever you ever pulled. Im in the same vote. Thats not voting pr pro hillary, thats voting no trump. But you would pull it. It would take both hands. I might need my friend to come in and help. So Hillary Clinton has been saying gun owners support my policies when it comes to gun safety and it appears from that evidence they do but reluctantly. They do that here tony as you said very are you lureluctantly do you think is balancing it out for gun owners . When youre a democrat and you own guns you believe that the Second Amendment is a right and you want to keep it and theres moderate steps that could be taken to sure up the safety question. Theres the assault weapons ban and theres also of course the gun show loophole. Well be hearing a lot more about that as the camping season kicks off. More democrat than a gun owner is what they were saying but really, really close. Great stuff as always. Appreciate it as always. Thank you for joining us this afternoon.
