Movie. He wimped out of honoring our troops because of a misting, he insulted fire victims and scorched by the french president. This is not winning. This is a national embarrassment. Good morning. Welcome to morning joe on this monday, november 12th. With us, we have msnbc contributor mike barnicle. Donnie deutsche is with us, editor of commentary magazine and columnist at the new york post, john padoritz is also a contributing editor at the Weekly Standard and associate editor for the Washington Post, david ignacious. Where do we begin . I found it interesting that World Leaders a couple of years ago were trying to take the measure of the man, of donald trump. They knew he was going to be disruptive. But it seems after last weeks elections where they saw the American People roundly, roundly destroy a lot of Donald Trumps allies in congress, despite the fact that the republicans had the best structural advantage in the house and the senate that they were ever going to have. And it only gets worse for them two years from now. Its almost like the embarrassment was Donald Trumps and not the countrys. I already think macron, i think other leaders are looking past donald trump. They see him becoming less relevant by the day. But you can take france and the embarrassments in france. You can talk about florida where donald trump is actually questioning, like some latinamerican dictator, questioning the integrity of the process in florida and demanding a recount or a revote in arizona. Despite the fact that rick scotts own monitors and Law Enforcement officers agree that nothing went wrong there. That nothing illegal has happened. And you can take that and im sure these mounting losses that hes saying, what started they talked about what starptte as a trickle turned into a massive wave. And things are looking bad for the republicans. Theyre looking bad for donald trump. And i think thats what we saw with all of the acting out with donald trump in paris. Well, lets start there. World leaders were in paris over the week to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of world war i. President trump, however, chose not to attend several events. On saturday the president and first lady were scheduled to visit the American Cemetery for a solemn remembrance of the battle of bella wood where the u. S. Lost about 1,000 troops and one of the most legendary battles in u. S. Marine history. The commander in chief canceled that visit citing the weather as a reason. He did speak at a different American Cemetery on sunday and had this message for world war ii veteran in attendance. Frank davita, thank you, frank. Thank you very much. You look so comfortable up there under shelter as were debting gren drenched. Youre very smart people. The weather did not stop other World Leaders from paying their respects at other Historic Sites across france. Including Canadas Justin Trudeau who trade tribute to the troops that lost their lives. Trump skipped the paris peace forum, opting to fly home early instead. And yesterday while the other World Leaders walked shoulder to shoulder together, President Trump decided to go alone. Russias putin also went separately and you can see in this snapshot the difference in reaction between macron and Angela Merkel and trump upon putins arrival. In his remarks, president macron warned against nationalism, a label President Trump has recently embraced. Translator as the very opposite of the selfishness of a nation that only looks after its own interests because patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism by saying our interests first, who cares about the others . We erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what makes it great and what is essential. Its moral values. And to ruin this hope by giving into the fascination for withdrawal, isolationism, violence and domination would be a grave error that future generations would very rightly make us responsible for. David ignacious. Donald trump is looking more and more alone on the world stage. And im wondering what your reaction was to all of the misadventure this is past weekend in france and whether the World Leaders did look at tuesdays results and realize that this is a man they only have to endure for the next few years. Joe, i thought as you did that the weekend marked a real break between trump who sulk through the News Conference with macron saturday and a very important commemoration at the cemetery where the fallen from bella wood, one of the great battles in marine history took place and wouldnt march with the others on sunday was a statement from trump. Im here but im not really with you. And it was reciprocated by the europeans. I thought that the speech that emanuel macron gave yesterday found real voice finally. Macron is somebody who tried to, you know, buddy up with trump, pat him on the back, be his pal. Not this weekend. Macron spoke clearly and firmly about the values that as he says sustained europe, sustained our traditional alliances. So we did have a sense of a new kind of break point. For those that think President Trump is irlegrelevant because the striking loss last tuesday. Im not quite sure of that. I think one thing i hear from europeans when i talk to them is that theyre reckonning with the possibility that an america that elected donald trump could elect another donald trump down the road. Maybe this isnt the country we thought it was. Theyll be reassured by tuesdays vote. As you heard from macron, they have to begin to think about their security in other ways. Maybe less dependent on the United States and, to me, that may be the most lasting and dangerous break that europe begins to say we really got to go it alone here. And, john, you had commented this weekend. You said i dont know what its about, but its not about the weather. Explain. Well, i mean, this is a gimme, right . President s go on kmcomemorative trips, nobody fails at an event like this. You cant. So its really strange that he didnt move heaven and earth to do it because, you know, it was only going to be good for him. So you have to then wonder what was in his heart . What was in his mood . What was in his spirit . Having said that, i want to descend a little from the notion that macrons, you know, speech really told trump off brilliantly. I think the Central Point that everybodys quoting which is that nationalism is the opposite of patriotism is nonsense. Nationalism is patriotism taken to an extreme in a way that, you know, creates blowback against can create blowback against the country one is being nationalist or patriotic toward. I think some of the themes that were evoked, that is this notion that maybe france and europe can go it alone, that doesnt harm trump. Trump has been explicitly saying that he does not want the American Security umbrella to have to extend over the rest of the world and if europeans are going to Start Talking openly about taking care of themselves, that will be a success for him, not a failure. He could use the success right now. But, you know, i think the general feeling of the comm commentary class is because he so foolishly skipped the event, he was uniquely he was in a unique position to get himself abrated by macron. Im not sure that macron hit him hard in the way that people think he did. Right. So i will say that when donald trump has acted this way in the past, speaking of the commentary, you heard oh, this plays into trumps hands. We dont understand it. But there is some magic political voodoo that he understands. Just look at 2016. It was always he would do things that would destroy or harm any other political candidates. And because he won in 2016 it was sort of always the Political Science belief, strike me down or i strike myself down and i only become stronger. Well, no. Actually, the behavior this weekend, the embarrassment of himself, i refuse. Americans came out on tuesday and they explained in the biggest way since watergate for democrats. They explained exactly what they thought about this type of behavior. I think more importantly for what is relevant in 2020 as well, republican candidates, no. This hurts corey gardener. This hurts suzansan collins. We saw it on tuesday and the results just keep, as john padora said, aat a snails pace. What happened this weekend is terrible for donald trump and republicans and we have all the evidence that we need of that. This does not work. People who know his personality well would believe that one of the reasons he didnt show up or wasnt actually present even when he was there is that hes pacing around, freaking out about the reality of the republican loss and what it means to him personally and what can transpire in the weeks and months to come because of that republican loss and he cant focus and he needs to be on the phone. Having said that, you mentioned countries waiting out trump. Our allies may be waiting him out. But i think there are dangers to american weakness. Talk a little bit about the international symbolism of an american president who is there but not really there at events like these. Theyre so symbolic and so important to world history. I think its very scary, actually. We really do need to watch what macron and a lot of european leaders are saying. First it was the 100 Year Anniversary of world war i. And what led to world war i and world war ii is nationalism, basically. It is divisions and fighting. European allies have seen the worst, have seen the consequences of what nationalism can destroy their own countries. And when macron says about collaboration and fighting together for the common good, when he talks about creating a European Army as a result of some of the President Trumps statements about not wanting to support nato, we have to watch for these things. I feel like this is the beginning of the european separation from america. Totally agree. This is real why i scary. These are our allies and friends and they fought with us and supporters. And when we lose them, we lose a lot of america with it actually. A lot of our own national interests. And so we have to watch for these signs and not ridicule them or look over them. Yes. Mike, speaking of looking over something, so i know for you, you have written about our veterans for such a long time. You see donald trump miss ceremonies for marines on one of the most hallowed grounds for u. S. Marines anywhere. And at the same time, while hes acting this way at events that should be celebrating our veterans, we saw in the New York Times yesterday the details of our men and women in uniform. Theyre being sent down to the border where theyre just its an invasion that is just not coming. That is a zscam using the United States milton the border. They will be there on than thanksgiving day away from their families no matter where they came from on the east coast. I appreciate the high level of intellect in this discussion thus far. But it ought not to be a surprise what happened this weekend. Donald trump is a man of no history. He has no comprehension of what world war i meant to europe and the world. He has no comprehension of the loss entailed and the dangers that world war i put back on the center stage. He has no comprehension of what happened in world war ii. Stood in a city on a boulevard where nazi troops marched down 75, 80 years ago. He has no sense of that. Thinks thing over the weekend, his behavior over the weekend i would submit is because of one thing. He was not the only person on the stage. Thats how he thinks of himself. I and i alone belong on the stage. And he and only one other person who appeared in paris over the weekend were intent on having disinterest to put it at a mild level but perhaps an intent to disrupt an alliance that kept the peace in europe, nato, and the European Coalition for over 70 years. And that other person also arrived late to many events, vladimir putin. You had putin and donald trump, twins, on the stage in paris. Both left early. Both are destructive. Both the behavior not surprising. And the question is, this is the brand that he really wants to build. It might be. Well get to donnie on. That but first, donnie, look at these results. Nearly a week later and were still getting a look at the results in the house. 35 incoming house members are women. Breaking the record of 24 set in 1992. And the total of at least 101 female members will be the largest number in history. And as Dave Wasserman notes, republicans are on track to lose nearly half of the 23 women in the house. There could be just 13 in the next congress. Republicans currently are ahead in only ten of californias 53 congressional districts. And falling further behind in the still undecided races like 15 term republican dana rohrbacker, 20 points behind his challenger. And for walters in californias 45th district, down to just one point with a difference of about 2,000 votes. The cook political reports amy walter tweeted, rs had a huge structure republicans had a huge structural advantage going into 2018. The fact that dems may net 40 seats as a route. This argument that its not as bad as obamas 63 seat loss in 2010 is laughable. Joe, ill let you take it to donnie. It is laughable at this point. Theyre saying something thats completely untrue. And laughable. What a surprise. Youre saying something that is completely untrue. You actually have donald trump demanding a revote, not a recount but a revote in arizona. He knows that across the street are going to win arizona. Just like they lost nevada. Just like a lot of us said before the election, again, all of this caravan talk, all of these racist ramblings by the president right before the election, especially attacking hispanics. He said it was going to have an impact in nevada and colorado. And did it. Donnie, again, i just want to keep hitting this theme. Because its something that i think most people in the media have forgotten. Donald trump surprised everybody in 2016. So they assume that donald trump is going to be surprising them for the rest of their lives. That there are no consequences to his actions. But there are. He was an extraordinary mes per. You have over 100 women going to congress for the first time in u. S. History. That is all a counter reaction to the masogany of donald trump and the rise of women. You can look also at the racism that we have been critical of from the very beginning. There is a reason that muslimamericans, women are winning. There is a reason why hispanics came out and voted the way they did. Theres a reason why, again, as amy walters said at the cook political report, republicans had the greatest structural advantage they will have for years. For years. And this he get blown away, donnie. They politically get wiped off the map. You cant say, wait a second, this is the price of letting donald trump act as bad as he wants without providing any checks or any balances. You know, Donald Trumps brand to him is always been more than anything, winning. Even when you lose, you won. Donald trump now the new brand is lost last week. He had a big l on his forehead. Donald trump is now loser. How has he acted since donald trump loser brand . Interesting. Just in the last five days, basically took shots as he continued to do at the basic pillars of our democracy. Lets call the vote into question in arizona and florida. Lets throw a reporter out of the white house office. And lets also put in a lackey for attorney general so lets attack the media, judicial and lets attack our electoral system. On top of that, two acts of coward he is and complete, complete lack of empathy weve been talking about the atrocious absentee show as far as he is semiconductor ai cemetery and the display to thousands of firefighters fighting for their lives out there and lives being lost and his reaction as our leader is to call into question funding at that moment. Are people putting their lives on line . This is a way were seeing a man who said after he lost, maybe he would shift behavior because hes now not donald trump winner, he is donald trump loser. He doubles down on destroying a pillars of what makes us a free country and continues to show the abhorrent human behavior. Lessons learned from mr. Trump coming out of that thumping, zero. Well, zero so far. Again, the question is, we dont expect for donald trump to learn from this because he doesnt apparently politically learn from anything. But you would think republicans in congress, i suspect they will over the next two years learn. They convince themselves for the first three or four days after this election that actually things have gone better than they expected. But i loved your column. Thank you. You said, hey, resist the happy talk, folks. This election is very bad for the job and is bad for 2020. Explain that if you will. Okay. So in the election, what weve seen with this, the snail like wave in which the results coming in after election night, like there is literally not a good result for republicans after tuesday night, wednesday, thursday, friday just each piece of news about arizona going democratic and various house races going democratic that when you look at this fresh, you have to say that we have a Republican Party that is shrinking. And the key to understanding trump in 2020 is he got 63 million votes and, you know, lost the popular vote by three million, right . He cant afford to lose any votes. You know, he got 80,000 votes in the right places in three states in order to win the presidency. And at least two of those stay in pennsylvania. Results did not go well for the gop. Scott walker lost in wisconsin. Republicans romped democrats romped in michigan and democrats won all these contested seats in pennsylvania and no republican challenge almost anywhere in the country, you know, theyre like one or two seats that went from democrat to republican and there appear to be 40 odd seats that went the other way. And trump needs more voeltes no fewer. Republicans need more votes, not fewer votes. And we just saw the electoral map for 2020 exposed for democrats. They can win iowa. They can win wisconsin. They can win michigan. They can win pennsylvania. They can win georgia potentially. And they can win florida. And, of course, then you have 400 electoral votes going, you know, all that happened. Then you would have and arizona. You would have like democratic wipeout. Right. Thats whats so mind boggling. That again, weve always said in here politics is a game of addition not subtraction. We never understood why donald trump is played to his hard core 33 as he continued to do right up until the election that ended up giving the republicans their worst loss since watergate, despite, again, the structural advantages all being in their direction. And so after the election you would think that this president would understand, unless my intent is to destroy my political future and the Republican Partys political future, i need to get out of the game of substractitraction but hes been doing . We talk about a lot of things. Attacks on the press, we talked about what happened in france. Hes attacking black reporters, specifically black women reporters. It is so obvious. We talked about him calling her a racist, insulting april ryan. Disgusting. Again, hes acting as if it hes running a campaign in laser targeting on white nationalists. Its just not the way to expand your base. And as john said, he cant afford to lose a single vote. From 2016. He already lost by almost three million votes. This is going in a very, very bad direction for the republicans as it has been for a very long time. The only difference is now republicans actually have the evidence in front of them that voters reject this. Well see how they respond. The behavior really shows to me from knowing the man, the completely cornered dictator wanna be that is the behavior that were seeing. Hes angry and out of it. Donny mentioned the president s tweets on the California Wildfires. First lets explain how bad the fires are. Crews there are working around the clock to contain the Deadly Wildfires that continue to burn out of control. The largest among them in northern california, known as the campfire. It has wiped out the entire city of paradise. In southern california, its the fire that crews made some progress overnight, evacuation orders remain in effect for some 170,000 residence. The numbers across the state so far, 31 deaths, 228 people unaccounted for. 150,000 people displaced. 400 square miles have been scorched including 177 homes in southern california. Some 8,000 crews are battling the fires with more resources still arriving from out of state. This is a disaster. President trump reacted to all of that on twitter. Among them, he tweeted this. There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in california except that Forest Management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now or no more fed payments. The president of the california professional firefighters responded in a statement writing, the president s message, attacking california and threatening to withhold aid to the victims of the cataclysmic fires is illinformed, illtimed and demeaning to those who are suffering as well as the men and women on the front lines. It really is. Its unspeakable. The president doing this in the middle of the great tragedy that is going on. We hear the president and so many people after these shootings in schools, the Mass Shootings in schools saying now is not the time. Week two, week three, now is not the time to talk about this tragedy. And yet, trucdonald trump is do this while the tragedy unfolds. David, just again, the president just appears to be even more untethered than usual with tweets like this. Joe, just to play politics at a time when were looking at images of people fleeing their homes, everything they care about up in flames is hard to imagine, particularly hard to imagine him sitting in his hotel room or at the ambassadors residence in paris, staying away from the events that are meaningful to the world and composing these tweets attacking his political enemies in california, it is just hard to believe. You know, when a country looked at this man last tuesday, i think people pulled back. I think you said it just right. This was a moment in which it was a kind of a character test for america. I think the issue is trump may have more solid control of whats what remains the Republican Party than ever. Its the question whether republicans are going to say wait a minute, youre not attacking firemen. Not in my party. If they dont do that, then i think were going to see even, you know, more indifference for trump sadly. Still ahead on morning joe, two huge races, two make or break recounts. The latest from florida where the states governor and u. S. Senator is still undecided. Also, the white house admits to posting a sped up video to try to justify the ban of a reporter. We will sort through this spectacle. And later, a sports hero, a Supreme Court justice, and a gop mega donor to whom the president chose to bestow one of the nations highest honors. Youre accusing bill nelson of trying to commit fraud . His lawyer said that a noncitizen should vote. Thats one. Number two, hes gone to trial and said that fraudulent ballots should be counted. Ballots have already been thrown out because they were not done properly. He said those should be counted. The. And you that i is the senator himself is committing fraud . Well, its his team. That is Florida Governor rick scott whos ahead by fewer than 13,000 votes in the senate race accusing his opponent, senator bill nelson, of trying to commit fraud. A recount is now underway for floridas senate and gubernatorial races. Governor scotts baseless allegation came one day after scotts own Florida Department of state spokeswoman says, our staff has seen no evidence of criminal activity at this time. And that was after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it is also seen no allegations of fraud as of friday. In the contest for governor, republican ron desantos leads by less than. 5 . The Associated Press is retractsing the call in the race as it does with all recounts. Joe . Lets bring in john. Now, john, i guess we shouldnt be surprised in the age of trump that people are behaving this way. But you have rick scott talking about fraud and criminal activity when his own monitors, his own administration, Law Enforcement officers saying there is none of that. Then a couple days ago you and i commented about marco rubio Conspiracy Theory that all grew out of a box that was found in a school that ended up being filled with pencils, erasers and stickers. And he said ive never seen anything like this before. But it really is. So many people have just gone full trum weapp with their consy theories. My lord. There is some very questionable behavior going on in Broward County with the Broward County election supervisor. That is a tradition now in Broward County with this one election supervisor. But thats one county, you know, out of the state whose county number im sure you know, joe. I dont. 67. 67. Right. Okay. So heres what strikes me. A lot of this is a much to do about nothing as it turns out because it is unbelievably unlikely that now that all the count is in that a recount is going to reverse votes by 15 and 30,000 margins. We have histories of recounts getting 700, 800 votes getting moved from one column to others when races are literally tied. I think in both these cases scott and desantos are totally safe and, you know, i think the mts ju atmosphere just got incredibly heated and scott lost it for, you know, 12 hours. Certainly gilliam wont pick up the votes. Again, you have marco rubio sitting a United States senator. He is questioning the legitimacy of an election because he sees a box that ends up being filled with pencils and erasers and stickers. Hes trying to steal elections when rick scotts own monitors and government and Law Enforcement officers say no fraud here. And theyre running it. Yeah. His administration is running the election. You have the same thing out in arizona. Again, questioning the legitimacy of elections that you may lose or trying to stop the votes of people who may vote gets you. Thats no the what we do here in america. So, joining thats what happens in banana republics. Joining me, kimberly atkins. Develop on this if you can. How much more can the republicans take . Dont they know what obviously looks like. I think one of the bigger concerns of this is if you recall 2000 in that recount, there are people to this day who still dont who still dont accept the legitimacy of that election. It was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court in their view. It appears that vote counts are attempted to be stopped and not every vote is counted. Thats the message you have on one side. You have democrats say count every vote. People are going to lose trust in the electoral system. And now you have, as you pointed out, several high ranking officials including the president of the United States saying that there is fraud afoot whereas you pointed out, all Law Enforcement, Law Enforcement does not back that up. Republicans and democrats in florida. They have seen no evidence of fraud. Its a mess. They see lots of evidence of incompetence and dysfunction in the electoral system. But that is something that perhaps Governor Scott should have addressed before people went to the polls. Its a big mess. I think what everybody should be doing is trying to find a solution to that mess. Rather than saying that people are trying to do something nefarious. Exactly. Like what trump does. Its not like rick scott has not run the state for eight years. This the is rick scotts state. He has run it for eight years. This is actually when you see peoples character no matter how they run the election. Whether they put their own ambition above what is best for the state and their country. And that is mcsally in arizona. You look at the republican governor of arizona. You look at the election official in arizona. The recounts happen. There is nothing illegitimate g going on here. I know there are partisan hacks that say theyre suckers for doing. That thats what you call the long play. While people dont understand this in the age of trump, the long play is always rewarded in american politics. And mcsallys integ rigrity rig now continue if she understand whats is happening. That will be remembered the next time her name is on the ballot. There is a huge contrast in character and behavior between Martha Mcsally in arizona and Governor Scott in florida. Absolutely right about that. Theres a larger issue here that we havent focused on. And that in this age where we are surrounded by such technological creations that stun us each and every day with their improvements, the fact that we as a nation dont have a single Voting System that is easy to use, thats reliable. There are paper ballots and recounts that, you know, we act were talking to day as if in broward and Palm Beach County in florida is as if they have yet to discover electricity. Its incredible were still going through this after Everything Else in our lives is so easy and marginalized and technological skill fful. Its one of the reasons why, david, that argument about how a foreign country can steal our elections. There are separate elections in the state of florida. There are 67 different Voting Systems based on the way each county traditionally or supervisor of election in each one of the 67 counties have decided theyre going to run their county. It may get ugly at the end when there are a lot of close races like there are in florida. There still is this concept of states rights and local rights in the way they run their elections. Im with you. Ive grown to love paper ballots just because its a lot harder to cheat. You and me both. You know, the idea of a modern system, i understand the appeal of what mike is saying. Consolidated and electronic and use the technology we got in one sense is obvious. That is precisely the system that could be subverted and sabotaged with catastrophic effects. And our goofy system with paper ballots and all these different administrators and, its unwieldy, it may be hard to count. It is also hard to cheat. It is hard to hack. I think were all kind of learning there is a benefit of that. So more paper ballot backups maybe is the chant we should have. Our quirky crazy system has the advantage that its protected in a weird way. Yeah. Donny, go back and look two years ago. For all the republican whining about rigged elections, all the Donald Trumps whining about voter id and how you have to put 12 things in it place. I have no problem specifically with voter id. But if youre going to make the argument you have to do that to prote protect elections from being swung by vetter frauoter fraud, there were 12 examples of voter fraud in 2016. It just doesnt happen. And donald trump tweeting in arizona that signatures dont match, electoral corruption. This is the action of a tie ran tyrant. This is how tyrants behave. Im not saying that donald trump is. That but he is borrowing their language, donny. Joe, unfortunately i think there is more to am could. Imagine two years from now and we will have a close election. Lets say a democrat wins. Weve watched this man donald trump. Donald trump will come out and say, he is already teeing it up in 2016, no this is wrong to my 50 million people. Take to the streets. These ballots are wrong. The sky is not blue. The sky is green. That will be our biggest constitutional crisis here. If he could but donny, let me ask you this question. You know donald trump really well. Yep. Do you really think as things continue to get worse and worse for him that he is going to put himself on the ballot in 2020 knowing hes going to lose . Because you no know what . For all of his failures, he has to know hes going to lose. Things are going badly. I think he will be disqualified before. But in the sad event he does run and does lose which will be a happy event, it will be stunning what we would see. He would be a president going, im not leaving. Im not leaving. Call the military. We have to look at this man. He really would do that. He would say, no, no, no. Im still here. And even if they carried him out, he would turn to 50 million americans and say im still your president and this is my new government. This is what were dealing with here, kids. I think were dealing with a lot more in many ways. So we have a lot more ahead. All right. On morning joe, were going to talk to two whoomen who help make history this season, the first muslim woman elected to congress and ab i zal spigail s who turned a republican suburb blue last week. Will you please sit down. Excuse me. Excuse me, would you please sit down. Go ahead. Thank you, mr. President. Very hostile. Such a hostile media. You rudely interrupted him. You rudely interrupted him. Of course, he also called april ryan a loser on friday. John, i know republican flack went to twitter saying well, you know, he attacks white reporters too, why would anybody just isolate on this instance and suggest and your response was well because its fairly obvious and this week especially it does seem, doesnt it, especially when he was going after them, almost like he was playing to that quote nationalist crowd of his. He might have been. I think since the beginning of his candidacy you can see that he has very specific problems, first of all, with women reporters. I mean beginning with really horrendous things he said about megyn kelly during the big first Republican Debate and then if you go on, hes had confrontations with april ryan theres something about his body language, his face, and this use of the phrase, excuse me. When he gets annoyed. When somebody says something he goes excuse me, excuse me, excuse me. He seems in my estimation to do that way more with women and way more with africanamericans and way more with africanamerican women than he does with anybody else. And i just think you can see the visible irritation on his face when hes being asked challenging questions by women, africanamericans and africanamerican women. You know, just to add on to that, to your point, john, i just look back at all the interactions identify had with him and kimberly i want to see your reaction to the way hes treated three female africanamerican journalists in the past week but just always for me it seemed like there was some sort of sexual connotation to it all. Always either hatred of the womans looks or some sort of kind of misogynistic attitude. In terms of his language and physical behavior. Having said that, your reaction to the treatment of april and the two other black female journalists. Yeah, mika, no one has to tell you how vicious the president can be against the people that he has a problem with. But, yes, particularly with africanamerican women i agree with john. I dont think it was a coincidence this week that we saw him react the way he did to april and to abby who were all really good talented journalists. April is one of the decent deae White House Press corps. But when he speaks specifically about black women in these contexts, when hes irritated, when its clear from his body language that he doesnt like being challenged by them he usually goes for specific things. He goes after their competency or intelligence. We saw him do that with these reporters. Weve seen him do it with members of congress. Congresswoman wilson. Congresswoman waters. Its a repeat performance. So to say this is just him giving general disdain to the media he does have disdain to the media but he takes this to a different level. Kimberly atkins thank you very much. John, thank you as well. Up next the president s legal problems are back in focus. New reporting on the hush money payments to a porn star and playboy model. The rain kept President Trump from honoring the war dead. Thats what they said. It didnt hold back jfk in 1961. Or barack obama in 2010. Well talk to president ial historian and nbcs Andrea Mitchell. Morning joe is coming right back. Theres a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with donald j. Trump. You see that when they explode their can ons in the oceans. Ill tell you president putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today. Gosh. Wow. From sword dancing to shopping to real estate speculation to embracing vladimir putin. A quick look at some of the president s overseas trips so far before this past weekends optout from a military memorial. Welcome back to morning joe. Its monday, november 12th. Mike barnacle, Donny Deutsch along with columnist for the Washington Post david ignatius. We have author and nbc news president ial historian, president of the ceo Atlantic Council fred camp and nbc news chief Foreign Affairs correspondent and host of Andrea Mitchell reports, Andrea Mitchell. So many good people this hour. I dont know where to begin. Why dont we just start with historical look at what happened this past week. Lets go to michael. Michael, really after this tuesdays elections im looking at things so much differently and this weekend i did not see america alone. I saw donald trump alone. Enraged that republicans were historically rejected despite having every structural advantage on their side by the voters. They rejected trumpism in america. That was a message heard across all four corners of the globe. Mueller who is silent. Obviously donald trump has to know indictments are coming. Right. Maybe for some people closer to him. I dont know. To me it looked not like america alone this weekend, it looked like trump alone. What was your take . It did. You could imagine him figuratively we dont know but maybe in his bathroom, bedroom in paris, thumping away, sending out tweets about forest fires at a time that any other president in American History would have been so proud to be in paris, celebrating the more than 116,000 americans who gave their lives in world war i. Huge heroism. It doesnt take much. The other thing that imaginary president and i can remember a few of those president s before 2017 would have done would have been proud to be there, reaffirming our Great Alliance rather keeping himself apart, refusing to go into the parade. Whatever it was about the helicopters. Refusing to go to honor the vets. Part of the president being head of state, donald trump has not been carrying that. For donald trump for those who said it was foggy, donald trump could have gotten in the limo and been driven out there. If he wanted to. If he wanted to be there he could have easily gotten there. So, david ignatius, despite the fact that this is trump alone and that people across the globe have to know that americans rejected trumpism last tuesday there are still consequences. You have macron talking about how europe has to look towards having its own defense mechanisms. Merkel, six months or so ago said we in germany, we can no longer depend on the United States of america, we have to worry about ourselves. So, i would guess that this weekend only reinforced thosein those leaders believe while donald trump is commanderinchief they have no ally in the United States. Joe, i hope that european leaders were reassured by our m midterm elections on tuesday and saw an electorate to come back in balance in a way that means america will return more to what they think of us as representing. They have to be careful and hedge their betts a little bit because they dont know. What i was struck by was the way in which macron spoke for europeans. One brief thing i want to read that he said yesterday which is so powerful. Im going to write it down. Putting our own interests first with no regard for others we erase the very thing that a nation holds dearest and the thing that keeps it alive is moral values. He couldnt have said it better than that. Thats the idea that has been at the center of our alliances, that we stand for something larger than ourselves, the values that we represent. And i thought it was really significant that macron, half of europe was speaking to america and american president saying no to yourse selfishness. No we stand together because we have values that are larger than that. And, andrea, it could not have been lost on european leaders what europe looked like before world war ii with vicious outbreak of nationalism, separation between democratic powers and axis powers. Couldnt be lost on a lot of those leaders that they are seeing the beginnings, the traces of some of those traits in donald trump. Well, exactly. But they are also seeing some of those traits in europe. And that may be the bet that donald trump is making. That merkel is setting the stage to give up power in the coming years and macron has historically low popularity at home and particularly who is not well served by his elaborate state visit to the u. S. Last spring with a very unpopular donald trump in france at least. But there are nationalist tendencies in germany, certainly in poland and hungary and italy. We see it in brazil. Donald trump has actually caught a wave or is leading a wave, perhaps but he certainly does not care about the fundamental principles that macron was elaborating. Just wanted to say theres a new donald trump tweet and its to the point so we dont have to focus on all of his tweets, the offensive ones about the California Wildfires while he was in from the rain and fog and inclement weather, we could say in his, in the palatial residence of the American Ambassador in france. Just returned from france where much was accomplished in any meetings with World Leaders. Never easy to bring up the fact that the u. S. Must be treated fairly. We pay for large capitalized portions of other countrys military protection. There you go. Theres more whining there. I have to say for all the talk about security and helicopters and why he couldnt take a two hour motorcade to where so many marines lost their lives in a historic battle in world war i, this is a president who has never yet been overseas to a military base, to a conflict zone. Hes never been to iraq. This on Veterans Day Weekend and you have to bring it back to the weekend of the pittsburgh massacre. When he said very candidly, well, you know, i thought about cancelling it. Not because of the horror, cancelling the rallies, not because of the horrors but because it was raining. It was a bad hair day. Andrea, to your point this is a president who has never visit admit base and, joe, we have troops at the border right now that are going to be there through thanksgiving, sitting there, waiting for a caravan. Thanks to this president. Were doing little to nothing because they have been put there as political props and these consequences, there are political consequences to these behaviors, mike barnacle, and i cannot believe well i can, i guess after two years can believe its the reality of it. Donald trump has absolutely nobody that can sit him down and say mr. President youve taken a terrible political situation and made it considerably worse in less than a week. Well, thats true again, joe. But this weekends events, theres a certain sadness to them. And michael alluded to it. He stood in a nation, on a continent where in 1941, 42, we began as americans going to that continent to free that continent, and guess what we did . When it was free we left. We sought no territory other than the hundreds of american cemeteries that are existing today and look beautiful today in france, belgium, all over europe. But fred, this weekend we also saw the president of the United States in the moment that he seemed only comfortable, only moment was when he aligned himself by a hand shake and a smile with vladimir putin. So what is your assessment of the threat that these two joined together pose to an alliance, nato, thats kept the peace since we left europe in world war ii . Since the berlin airlift. Whats usual sense of the disruption, potential disruption that these two men cause for this alliance . Well, mike let me pick up on something Andrea Mitchell was saying. So populism and nationalism isnt a pretty thing in the United States. But its a threat to europe. You have brexit pulling out. You have Great Britain pulling out. Second largest economy in the European Union. You have italy as ground zero in a battle with the European Union over its budget. You have germany losing its political center, merkel stepping down as party leader. Well see what happens there. The commemoration of world war i has to remind us that a defining moment of history and this is another one, leadership makes a difference. So there is a threat from russia to europe, and it doesnt look good that trump is paying more attention to being close to putin than he is in sort of defending europe against it. So i think what we really got to watch and this gets to michael, having a great historian, we had the head of world war i right a book called the great illusion. There was no dream there would be world war 1. Economic growth was strong. Great progress among great nations. No one could imagine this happen. It did happen. It happened because of a rise of isolationism, of nationalism and leaders lost their bearings. I think were in a similar historic moment now and not enough of us are recognizing this. Thats what we have to come at is how high the stakes are. Mika, it to ask your opinion. This is so frightening and so simple and people will try to understand why did donald trump not go pay homage to those military men that gave lives for their country. Mika, probably the reason, his hair. Andrea made a glib joke. This is what motivates this man. Im not trying to be silly. Its the truth. That is where, i know this man. To him it was not about donnie, i completely agree. I know how he is about it. I know him too. I think its two fold. I think its that, believe it or not. But i also think that he, he is, he cant get away from the phone right now given the potential threat he and some family members may be in. That is one potential reason, one potential explanation for such an unbelievable decision to not be present on the world stage. Next to World Leaders. Next to our allies. Standing in the rain recognizing sacrifice. Its something he cant even fathom right notice because hes so concerned about himself. But this behavior, yes, maybe hes behaving like a dictator. Yes maybe hes behaving like a tyrant. Maybe theres other reasons for it. I still think it poses a serious danger to our democracy. Definitely it does. Hes creating doubts, suspicion and more importantly fear. Today on veterans day when we have troops and borders defending against immigrants or a caravan of civilians and children this is demoralizing for our own troops on veterans day. We have to go you know when people do that they create hysteria, fear, Conspiracy Theory and thats his methodology. Thats what hes doing. He has a choice here. Either he adjusts to the fact we have 102 women in the house now. 43 of them are women of color. We have different america rising. We have troops that need be respected and not be demoralized for defending america against civilians and children and women. He has to adjust. We have european allies saying were scared. Rise of nationalism all over the world. This is is a recipe for maybe another war. So he has a choice of either being a part of calming down things, bringing us together or have a choice of being an isolationist person, creating fear and thats the route hes going through. We need to wake up to that. We need to see it. Michael, he could see it in realtime if he understood history. Explain the decisions that american leaders made after world war i, versus the decisions they made after world war ii, and the consequences of following trumps path after world war i. Right. You know perfect. You know this as a students of history just as well as i do, joe, after world war i we tried to get in the league of nations. We failed. That led to the rise of adolf hitler and imperial japanese. It led to the coming of world war ii. Franklin roosevelt learning from that lesson early in world war ii made an effort to begin building the United Nations and planning for postwar alliances that kept the peace for what is it 73 years now. And what donald trump not knowing that history, or not caring has been taking a baseball bat to our alliances. We saw it this weekend. Why was he almost deliberately using almost everything, every opportunities he was given to show disrespect to our alliance, you know, staying at home from the observance over the weekend, the scene when he was sitting with the other leaders and the thumbs up from vladimir putin. This is Vladimir Putins wish list. And so is domestically Donald Trumps effort to break down fundamental elements of our democracy. The free press, use of armed forces by sending them to the border in this reality shore. The effort to pit group against group. Thats what putin has wanted for the last ten years to see the contradictions in american democracy to begin to break down. I hope trump is doing this coincidentally and not something larger. Fred, you know this as well as anybody in washington or across the world. After two years of donald trump, after two years of trumpism on the world stage, what is the health of the north atlantic treaty . What is the health of western liberal democracies in the age of trump . Its a mixed bag. On the one hand we got more troops in central and Eastern Europe on a rotating basis. We provide more weapons, defensive weapons to you crane. If you look at the facts on the ground they are not bad. But if you talk to our allies they are wondering whether the United States and this president would come through if it was really necessary in the baltics or when the balkans or elsewhere. The real question, i want to pick up on what you said and mike said. This is a defining moment in history like the end of world war i and world war ii. We got it more right than wrong after world war i and ii. If we dont get our act together with our friends and allies chaos will shake this future. So what our allies are asking us after the midterms is number one how durable is this populace nationalist lurch in the United States and what do we do it. Number two how will it support nationalism in italy and brazil. Nationalism predated trump but hes inspired others. Thats what they are watching. Wow. All right, fred with the Atlantic Council. Thank you so much. Michael, thank you so much for being with us and congratulations on the success of your book. Well deserved. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Mika, we dont know exactly whats going on in the president s mind but i can tell you if you just look back over the past few years, you can see when the president seems especially unmoored theres usually announcements he knows about or his lawyers know is coming from Robert Muellers office and i cant help but wonder if after a couple of months of silence if donald trump and the white house are more on edge today and this past weekend than ever before because they know that action is coming. Thats my gut. Theres new reporting that as a president ial candidate donald trump was involved in or briefed on nearly every step of the hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels and former playboy model. He said, aipts reminder, he told everybody he knew absolutely nothing about either of those things. Nope. According to the wall street journal trump directed deals in phone calls and meetings with his selfdescribed fixer Michael Cohen and others. The u. S. Attorneys office in manhattan has reportedly gathered evidence of trumps participation in the transactions. The journal reports that as a president ial candidate in august of 2015, donald trump huddled with a long time friend and Media Executive david pecker in his Trump Tower Office and made a request. According to people familiar with the meeting he asked what can you do to help my campaign . Mr. Pecker offered to use his national with enquirer tabloid to buy the silence of women if they tried to publicize sexual encounters with donald trump. In october of 2016, mr. Pecker reportedly called off the trump reimbursement deal on the advice of his lawyer. He worried that accepting reimbursement from trump could undermine any argument that the mcdougal payment was made for an editorial and business reasons rather than as an in Kind Campaign contribution. Mr. Pecker told Michael Cohen to tear up the Reimbursement Agreement but cohen kept a copy. Federal agents found it in a search of cohens office earlier this year. Joining us now, david farr farenthold. Despite the president paying off these women after afghanistan sexual encounters, lets talk about the Campaign Finance angle of this which could be real serious legal trouble for the president. Am i correct . Thats right. Supporting note this is not the mueller investigation, this is a totally separate investigation out of the Southern District of new york. This is really serious, both for the underlying facts but also because it involves so many people who know so much other stuff about donald trump. Trumps long time cfo was heavily involved in these decisions. Michael cohen his long time fixer. David pecker. All these people were involved. If they see vulnerability for themselves what can they give you on trump to save their own skins. Michael cohen told me specifically directly that donald trump was directing all of this. Also audiotapes that speak to that and david pecker has been cooperating. Question, is this the kind of thing that in some way the american public, even if it does come to fruition say, you know, technically yeah, but we need more. Okay. Great. This is one of those one its worry about, just as somebody who is behind the democrats that they can overplay their hand. In the court of push opinion at the end of the day, okay, paying off a porn star. Theres politics as usual. Thoughts . Well, i dont worry too much about that. I dont think we know what the story will play out to be. Its hard for me to see how people will react. Its much bigger than it was in the beginning. What well see from the full flower of this investigation is both investigative leads in other parts of trump businesses, but also we might see transcripts. We might see detailed account of how trump was involved in this. Its too early to prejudge how people will react. We dont know what the full story is and what we will learn about trumps involvement. Andrea mitchell here. What about the implications for Campaign Finance violations here as well. Is that a big enough deal to become a legal issue for the mueller team, do you think . I think it is a big legal team. I dont think the mueller team considers it part of their purview. They are happy to have other u. S. Attorneys Office Working on other issues not directly related to russia. I dont think mueller will get involved. I heard people in the west wing are more worried about this because of how it reaches into trumps business. David, thank you very much for being with us. We do appreciate it. Andrea mitchell, i want to end on a side note here. Obviously nobody could have missed if they read the New York Times on sunday the story of what donald trump and his administration are doing to young men and women this thanksgiving and possibly going into christmas, putting u. S. Troops on the border in combat position for a threat that could easily be taken care of by the border patrol. Youve asked this question, i will ask it of you as well. See if you got any answers. How could james mattis allow this to happen . He clearly he cannot be happy about this. David ignatius, in fact, has written about where are generals mattis and dunford on all of this because this is not a decision they could have supported. Its one thing for jim mattis to try to soft pedal the space force, for instance, that he opposed and we clearly didnt have a parade on pennsylvania avenue on veterans day which the president ordered which was a waste of money and time for the district of columbia for the armed forces. Thats why the president was in paris and not in washington yesterday. But the fact is that the well has been poisoned against james mattis by james bolton by his deputy who are opponents of mattis and one wonders, i guess he stays on because of his loyalty, because hes a soldier. But his position is increasingly untenable as we await further shakeups in the cabinet. Just to follow up on what andrea was saying, i think this has been a terribly difficult time for secretary mattis. He has tried to keep his head down. Tried to prereceive his viability with a president who keeps bad mouthing him. Before the election he said hes sort of a democrat hell be going soon. Andrea, i dont know about your sources, but mine tell me that this decision to send regular military to the border in what seemed to many people in uniform a transparently political effort, i think really disturbed people. That the military was being brought in into the president s political purpose . Secretary mattis will want to pull that back to the extent he can. I hope hell have some support from republican senators and members of congress who are disturbed by this too. Indeed. All right. Our thanks to Andrea Mitchell and well be watching Andrea Mitchell reports at noon here on msnbc. I hope mattis pulls back. We havent seen anything. Still ahead on morning joe, senator Sherrod Brown cruised to reelection in ohio. Is it a model for democrats in 2020. He joins us next on morning joe. Ohio is seemingly as red as ever following last weeks Election Results with republicans maintaining their lead in ohios u. S. House delegation and sweeping down ticket statewide. But the only democrat currently Holding State office claimed a third term on tuesday and says his victory is proof progressives can win in americas heartland. Newly reelected democratic governor Sherrod Brown joins us now. Congratulations. Very good to have you. So republicans did have such a good night in ohio. What do you think made your win so convincing as a progressive democrat . As a progressive democrat and you can fight for workers and respect the dignity of work as i do and fight for workers whether you punch a clock or swipe a badge or work for a salary or work for tips or whether youre caring for an ageing parents or raising children. In respect the dignity of work. Thats what washington forgets about. Voters will vote for a strong progressive who i dont compromise on civil rights, i dont compromise on lgbtq rights or worker rights. Ohio showed that on tuesday. Now mike barnacle, it reminds me of joe biden tabar in pennsylvania to say we need candidates who represent all of us. Hard to do in a state that republicans won so overwhelmingly. Yeah. Joe biden doesnt even drink, we should point that out. Senator brown, let me ask you, youre in a tough position. Youre in the minority going back to the senate. You know the issues. You know whats important to people regardless of their party, infrastructure, i Health Care Costs, things like that. Education for their children. Built you know what its like because you live an ordinary life in ohio. When you stand in line at the drugstore and look at the shock on peoples faces when they are confronted with the copay for their prescriptions that are so phenomenally expense jennifer what can to be done on that that you think might have a bipartisan shot of passing . I think there are a number of things we should do. First of all we should negotiate drug prices directly with the drug companies. One of the things we do at the Veterans Administration and dye we celebrate veterans day. I appreciate earlier what andrea and david said about general mattis and troops at the border and honoring the men and women in uniform today and those who served our country. We negotiate drug prices on behalf of veterans directly with the drug companies. We ought to do that for medicare because a big part of whats driving Health Care Costs is the cost of prescription drugs. We should allow we should be able to purchase drugs on the open market as long as those countries around the world have an fda equivalent as canada does and a number of countries do. There are a number of things we can do. We should not allow the deductibility of drug company advertising. Why should taxpayers subsidize all the drug company ads on the morning joe show. Senator, Donny Deutsch. Congratulations on a brilliant campaign. What im concerned about democrats Going Forward is them taking their eye off the ball about education and health care and focusing too much on trump and impeachment and indictments and subpoenas. What advice would you have for your fellow democrats to on one hand hold the president accountable in ways he needs to be but not taking their eye off the ball what voters really care about. I go to winning campaigns that helped us take the house. I look at my campaign as a blueprint, not just to govern. To prepare for 2020, a blueprint to focus on workers. Regardless of what kind of work you do. Whether you swipe a badge or work on a salary, putting workers first. Looking for, you know, what we do as a nation to support those who work and get the cost of prescription drugs down and do infrastructure. My campaign, you know, i dont agree on much of anything only a couple of issues with the president of the United States. But my campaign was about workers and about the direction where we go. There will be investigations in the house as there should be but democrats do need to focus on those winning campaigns around the country where we talk infrastructure, we Talk Health Care price, especially keeping drug prices down and we focus on a middle class tax cut not a tax cut that blew a hole in the budget and Mitch Mcconnell turns around and wants to cut Social Security and medicare to pay for it. Senator Sherrod Brown, thank you very much. Congratulations. To an update now on the Mississippi Senate race. Yesterday video surfaced of a republican senator from mississippi cheerfully saying that she would attend a public hanging if a supporter invited her. Senator cindy hydesmith who is competiing in a runoff, take a listen. The footage went viral and hydesmith responded quote in a comment i referred to accepting an invitation to a speaking engagements in referencesing the one who invited me. I used an exaggerated expression of regard and any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous. I actually just dont know who makes a joke like that. That boggles the mind. The campaign of her democratic opponent who has served as. s first black member of Congress Since reconstruction called hydesmiths comments reprehensible and said they have no place in our political discourse in mississippi or our country. They have no place in joking either. Its just not a joke. You dont joke about hanging, public hangings. Still ahead, well get the very latest out of florida where the race is on to recount blots. Republican governor rick scott is accusing democratic senator bill nelson of fraufd but state officials dont seem to agree with that. Thats coming up on morning joe. Not long ago, ronda started here. He cant stand the fact that hes not going to be elected for the first time in decades. And he wont hes just here to steal this election. Thats what hes done. That was Florida Governor rick scott, claiming once again without evidence of fraud in the states u. S. Senate race the florida recounts situation is clearly a huge mess. Ensuring the final results are trusted by the voters of the Sunshine State will require extraordinary leadership. Unfortunately the person in charge of the state, Governor Scott, has already failed at that and failed miserably. Scott may be ahead in the vote count for his senate race but clearly more concerned about getting a job than behaving in a dignified respectable and decent manner. His evasion for his own political interests is kind of reminding me of when he was on our show. I think it was two years ago. Take a look. Would you tell your friend donald trump that he should walk back a statement that muslims, that islam hates america, that islam hates us. Do you think muslims in the states of florida hate america . Well, as you know in florida were the best melting pot in the world. We love everybody coming to our state. Im just asking generally do you think that muslims hate americans . That islam hates america, as donald trump said last night. I can tell you whats going on in florida. No, no. I know whats going on in florida. I want to know whats going on in your head, governor. Were friend. I want you to answer the question. Do you personally think that islam is a religion that hates america. So, joe, what i can tell you in our state is we have a lot of muslims that live in our state. Donald trump, you know, he can talk about the things he wants to talk about. Marco rubio, ted cruz, john kasich. No, no. Can you answer the question or should we scoot . Well, i can tell you that, you know, im glad everybody is in florida. Governor rick scott, thanks for being on. Well move on now. Thanks. So he scooted. Scott is making unstan ubstanti accusations of fraud. Hes childishly urging the democratic incumbent bill nelson to step aside before the votes are counted. In short scott is trying to undermine the legitimacy of the election for himself. Rather than recusing himself from the process, rick scott is acting as political and as reckless as his friend donald trump. This recount is a political nightmare. Rick scott, apparently, cares more about himself than the state hes supposed to lead. Joe, you know, this guy, i dont understand why hes copying this president s behavior. I dont either. I really dont. Because if he only talked to the people that know the state of florida the best, he would know. Odds are hes going to win this thing and probably going to end up winning it even after the machine counts, the hand recounts. I dont think bill nelson will pick up 12,000, 13,000 votes. Nobody believes that. Yet hes willing to accuse a guy thats represented the state of florida of committing a criminal act, of trying to quote, steal the election when rick scotts own monitors and the Law Enforcement officers in rick scotts own state say thats not true. Yet he went back on fox friends this morning, continuing to lie. Hes lying every day. These are lies. Theres no basis in fact. Theres no basis in truth. These are just plain simple lies. And those lies will follow rick scott to the United States senate for the next six years and they are just so, so absolutely distressing just like it was distressing that marco rubio, because people found a box of pencils and stickers and erasers started talking about a grand Conspiracy Theory. That was just absolutely stupid. It was deplorable. But, you know what, mika. Its just where we are. Of course heres donald trump just tweeting quote the florida election should be called in favor of rick scott and ron desantis in that large numbers of new ballots showed up out of nowhere. No. Were not going to read. Take it down. Just take it down. What a liar. What a liar. Hes lied about arizona. Hes lying about florida. And, again, the crazy thing is republicans are going to end up winning florida and he still is lying about it. And rick scott just like you saw in that clip from two years ago will not stand up to donald trump. Will not show the character that we used to expect from United States senators, and we used to expect from governors in the state of florida. I will say one more time. If you are a republican, if you are an office holder, let those with ears hear. Trumpism was voted down in the most extraordinary and dramatic way. Any time since watergate. It failed. And you republicans have the biggest structural advantage that youve had in a very long time and it will be a bigger structural advantage than you will have probably for decades to come. And you still lost and you may pick up a couple of seats in the United States senate when you should have picked up five or six. Trumpism fails. Lying catches up to politicians. Racism catches up to arizona. You think its a coincidence you lost nevada and arizona . Two states with some of the largest hispanic populations growing by the day . After donald trump calls all hispanics breeders and makes up the lies about hispanics coming from Central America and bringing leprosy and smallpox. Actions have consequences. Rick scotts words this week, this morning, will follow him around for the rest of his political career. Wake up. And you know what . Start using the values and political wisdom you used and showed before donald trump came on stage in american politics because rest assured hell not stay on that stage longer past 2020. All right, joining us now, a democrat from michigan with her victory on tuesday. Rashida talib is the first muslim woman ever elected to congress. Thank you so much for being on our congratulations. First of all, as were in the age of trump, what is your opinion of the way this president has handled race . I would like to hear directly from you as a woman and one of the first muslims to serve in congress. You know, many people that are very close to me know the struggle that as a mother raising two muslim boys in america, that even my eldest son questions whether or not he can tell someone that hes of muslim faith or that hes even arab. I never thought in a time in our country that my child would have fear in being who he is in our own country. It is something that really comes with me as i enter the United States congress, that i push back against that, that i show my son that bullies and hate dont win. That we can speak up, run for office, that we get into the room and make sure we have a voice and a seat at the table. And that we show love and lead with compassion and lead with the sense of understanding that all of us, that were part of this humanity together and this kind of divisiveness doesnt win. Im going to come in as a mom and try the best i can to uplift my little boys voice in that room as so many of us are right now just feeling the sense that hes pushing back against our sense of belonging here in the United States of america. Rashida, you said divisiveness doesnt work. What are you going to do about uniting the country and addressing immigration, infrastructure, health care, our veterans . What is your strategy on that versus attacking a president that is sexist, hes said some horrible racist things. Im not attacking him. I was talking about the fact that my 13yearold boy has to hide who he is. I didnt run to become the first muslim woman elected. I ran because most of my schools dont have clean water, where the corporate assault on working families in detroit and wayne county dont feel like they have any connection with our own government. So im going to uplift their voices. Im going to fight against that corporate greed that has infiltrated our United States congress into our government. Im going to push back. Im going to fight for medicare for all. Im going to fight against discrimination. Im going to fight against the ongoing assault from the Car Insurance industry in michigan. We have the highest rates of Car Insurance because of the practice of red lining. Im going to lift their voices up. I will outwork the hate. I will outwork every single thing on the agenda of the right wing. I dont care if its trump or whatever it is thats leading the kind of push against the working families that i represent. But its going to be loud, direct and clear and its going to be about those issues and values. My district did not vote for me because im muslim. They voted for me because i have the heart and love and passion to give them a voice in the United States congress. I just wanted to ask you, the Muslim Community in america has been extraordinarily supportive of Law Enforcement, of our military. Its one of the things that is most striking if you travel with our military. Do you worry that thats gotten frayed with all of the attacks from the president and his supporters on the loyalty of muslims . Is that beginning to take a toll, do you think . In many ways it does, because people feel isolated. They dont feel like they can go to their own government for help. They feel theyre only protecting certain people. Thats when that distrust happens. It creates unsettling feelings within our neighborhoods and communities. So i do think it does. Again, we can outwork it. We can elect people like me. Im not going to be this person that just comes, im muslim american, im arab, im a woman, im a mother. All of those things are very important, but all of us first. I uplift women. A you look at everything that we ran on. It wasnt because we wanted to be first. Its because were mothers, that have been outside of the ring for so long and listening to everybody try to speak for us. We were tired of it. That we as working families, as people that understand college debt, understand what it means to send your child to underfunded schools. Half of the members of the United States congress are millionaires. They are not in an income bracket thats even close to the majority of americans across this country. They dont have a voice within the congress right now. Its going to change. Its going to change with a rainbow of color of women. Its going to change with just an incredible focus that women bring when we do anything in this country. Rashida, this fire that is burning within you, that is so evident this morning, when did it start and how did it start . You know, joe, im the eldest of 14 children. Its probably the most defining thing about me. Ive been taking care of people all my life. I dont like when people are told they dont deserve something because of the color of their skin or because of their income or where they live. So for me ive always been that protector, that big sister. People call me mama bear. I do feel like i push against anything that makes people feel less than or dehumanize them. People i dont care if youre a server at a restaurant or an attorney at a nonprofit. I dont care what you do for a living as long as you know right from wrong and you know youre part of a larger human class in our country and that we all deserve respect and love. Wed be able to succeed and move forward. That fire comes as a child of immigrants, as somebody that grew up in probably the most beautiful blackest city in the country, the city of detroit, the birthplace of the civil rights movement, the birthplace of the hey bolabor rights movem. All of that is me as i come to the United States congress. Still ahead, well talk to another woman who made history on election day. Congresswomanelect abigail spanburger. She ran one of the best commercials. This is who i am. Plus, President Trump threatens to withhold disaster aid from california as that state continues to burn. And you can take that and im sure these mounting losses that hes saying, what started they talked about what started as a trickle turned into a massive wave. You look so comfortable up there under shelter as were getting drenched. Youre very smart people. The weather did not stop other World Leaders from paying their respects at other Historic Sites across france. Including Canadas Justin Trudeau who paid tribute to the troops that lost their lives. Joe, i thought as you did that the weekend marked a real break between trump who sulked through the News Conference with ma ron macron saturday and a very important commemoration at the cemetery where the fallen from bella wood, one of the great battles in marine history took place and wouldnt march with the others on sunday was a statement from trump. For those that think President Trump is irrelevant because of the striking loss last tuesday. President s go on commemorative trips to battlefields and this is a layup, great event, heartening, binds the nation together. Nobody fails at an event like this. But, you know, i think the general feeling of the commentary class is because he so foolishly skipped the event, he was uniquely he was in a unique position to get himself abraded by macron. Im not sure that macron hit him hard in the way that people think he did. Right. So i will say that when donald trump has acted this way in the past, speaking of the commentariat class, you heard, oh, this plays into trumps hands. We dont understand it. But there is some magic political voodoo that he understands. Just look at 2016. It was always he would do things that would destroy or harm any other political candidates. And because he won in 2016 it was sort of the always obe wan kenobe belief, strike me down or i strike myself down and i only become stronger. Well, no. Actually, the behavior this weekend, the embarrassment of himself, i refuse. Everybody said he embarrassed america. No, he didnt. He embarrassed donald trump. Americans came out on tuesday and they explained in the biggest wave since water gate for democrats. They explained exactly what they thought about this type of aberrant behavior. Anybody thinking that his actions this weekend will help him are more, i think, importantly for whats relevant in 2020 as well, republican candidates. No. This hurts corey gardener, this hurts susan collins. This hurts every single republican that is up in 2020 in swing states. We saw it on tuesday and the results just keep at a snails pace, this wave keeps coming in. What happened this weekend is terrible for donald trump politically, is terrible for republicans politically. And we have all the evidence we need of that. Still ahead on morning joe, if the president s reception overseas was bad, just wait for whats coming in the house. Well break down the new class arriving on capitol hill. First, here is bill karins with a check on those Deadly Wildfires burning across california right now. The statistics are just incredible. I mean, we had one of the fastestmoving fires. Now we know its also one of the deadliest fires in california history and it has burned the most structures of any fire in california history. Its happened in like 2436 hours. This is the campfire. 31 fatalities, ties the record for the deadliest single fire in california history at 29. And then on top of all that, with that 6,000 structures that have been burned. A lot of those homes and businesses in the town of paradise, they said 90 of the structures in that town are gone. Theres still 200 people missing and unaccounted for from that town. What happened . First off, we are building deeper into the woods, but Climate Change is also a huge issue too. We finished july. It was the hottest july ever on record in california, the hottest summer, mixed with the drier vegetation and the rainy season hasnt arrived this november. Were about 34 inches behind where we should be where these fires happened. Theres no doubt if the rainy season would have come in when it should have, things would have been more moist and wouldnt have burned the way it did. The fire season is getting longer and the annual number of large fires is increasing in the west. Many of the huge blazes weve had have been in the last ten years alone. Today 5075 miles an hour are expe expected, the santa ana winds tonight. Until it rains in california, these high wind events are extremely dangerous for everyone in the region, including the firefighters that are on the lines hoping and praying no new huge blazes break back out. Nearly a week later and we are still getting a look at the results in the house. At least 35 incoming house members are women, breaking the record of 24 set in 1992. And the total of at least 101 female members will be the largest number in history. And as Dave Wasserman notes republicans are on track to lose nearly half of their 23 women in the house. There could be just 13 in the next congress. Republicans currently are ahead in only ten of californias 53 congressional districts. And falling further behind in the still undecided races like 15 term republican dana rohrbacker, 20 points behind his challenger. And a shrinking lead for mimi walters in californias 45th district, down to just one point with a difference of about 2,000 votes. He knows that democrats are going to win arizona just like they lost nevada. Just like a lot of us said before the election, again, all of this caravan talk, all of these racist ramblings by the president right before the election, especially attacking hispanics. He said it was going to have an impact in nevada and colorado. And it did. Donnie, again, i just want to keep hitting this theme. Because its something that i think most people in the media have forgotten. Donald trump surprised everybody in 2016. So they assume that donald trump is going to be surprising them for the rest of their lives. That there are no consequences to his actions. But there are. He was an extraordinary m person. He is still a misogynist. His press conferences over the past week, guess what happened . You have over 100 women going to congress for the first time in u. S. History. That is all a counter reaction to the misogyny of donald trump and the rise of women. For years. And they get blown away, donnie. Politically they get wiped off the map. There is no way for any republican in congress to not look at what happened and say, wait a second, this is the price of letting donald trump act as abhorrently as he wants without providing any checks or any balances. You know, Donald Trumps brand to him is always been more than anything, winning. Roy cohen taught him even when you lose, you won. Donald trump now the new brand is he lost last week. He had a big l on his forehead. Donald trump now is loser in office. How has he acted since donald trump loser brand . Interesting. Just in the last five days, basically took shots as he continued to do at the basic pillars of our democracy. Lets call the vote into question in arizona and florida. Lets throw a reporter out of the white house office. And lets also put in a lackey for attorney general. Lets attack the media, lets attack judicial and lets attack our electoral system. On top of that, two acts of cowa cowardice and complete, complete lack of empathy weve been talking about the atrocious absentee show as far as he is cemetery and the display to thousands of firefighters fighting for their lives out there and lives being lost and his reaction as our leader is to call into question funding at that moment. Coming unon morning joe, after the drubing he received on tuesday, it is surprising that President Trump would want to relive the midterm elections, but hes using twitter to post evidencefree claims of voter fraud while batting around the idea of an election doover. Senator nelson is clearly trying to commit fraud to try to win this election. Thats all this is. Wait a second. I want to pick up on that. Youre accusing bill nelson of trying to commit fraud . His lawyer said that a noncitizen should vote. Thats one. Number two, hes gone to trial and said that fraudulent ballots should be counted. Ballots have already been thrown out because they were not done properly. He said those should be counted. You think the senator himself is committing fraud . In the contest for governor, republican ron desantis leads by about 33,000 votes, a margin that is less than half a percentage point. The Associated Press is retracting its call in the race, as it does with all recounts. So many people have just gone full trump with their conspiracy theories. My lord. There is some very questionable behavior going on in Broward County with the Broward County election supervisor. That apparently is a tradition now in Broward County with this one election supervisor. But thats one county, you know, out of the state whose county number im sure you know, joe. I dont. 67. 67. Right. Okay. So heres what strikes me. A lot of this is much ado about nothing, as it turns out, because it is unbelievably unlikely that now that all the count is in that a recount is going to reverse votes by 15 and 30,000 margins. We have histories of recounts getting 700, 800 votes getting moved from one column to others when races are literally tied. I think in both these cases scott and desantis are probably totally safe. And you know, i think the atmosphere just got incredibly heated and scott lost it for, you know, 12 hours. I bet hes not happy that he did so, because hows nelson going to get 15,000 votes back in a recount . Has anyone ever heard of such a thing . I cant think of a single time that its happened, certainly not in modern American History. If all the votes are in, then no, hes not going to pick up 12, 13, 14,000. Arou certainly gillum wont as well. But again, you have marco rubio, a sitting United States senator, questioning the legitimacy of an election because he sees a box that end up being filled with pencils and erasers and stickers. And you have rick scott accusing of stealing elections. Virginias incoming congresswoman joins us next on morning show. The shark ion robot cleaning system. Joining us now, democratic congresswomanelect Abigail Spanberger of virginia. Also with us, nbc news capitol hill correspondent and host of kasie dc on msnbc kasie hunt. Congratulations, first of all. I thought one of the best moments, one of the best commercials i saw was a sort of takeoff on this 70s country song called im not lisa, my name is julie. Youre saying im not nancy. My name is abigail. Apparently that worked, just waving the flag of nancy pelosi did not work even with Republican Voters in your new district. Thats right. Thats right. Our debate was quite an interesting one. My opponent called me by the wrong name multiple times. So what are your whats your message to other democrats that are thinking about running in 2020 . What worked for you in the age of trump . What worked for us was to keep our race really local and focused on the people and voters in our district. We created the campaign. I created the Campaign Just getting out in the district and meeting people. We hosted over 150 meet and greet events throughout the course of our campaign in living rooms and dining rooms and libraries and fire stations across the district. My goal was to listen to people and be really accessible and approachable and to make sure i was talking about the issues that are most important to people in our district. That was really the strength of our campaign. We had a Tremendous Base of volunteers. Much of that is due to the fact that people got to meet me originally in somebodys hiving room or dining room. My advice to democrats would be to listen to voters, get in touch with whats important to people in the district and make sure were talking about the issues most important to their daily lives. Its so difficult for republicans when they come on this show or other shows, donald trump will tweet something, theyll immediately be asked about that. Also its a challenge for democrats as well who are always being asked to respond to the latest, what happened this weekend or what donald trump tweeted about forest fires in california. Its a constant steady stream. Is your advice just ignore the noise, ignore the trump tweets and talk about whats right in front of you . I think its a mix. I think my advice overall is to be for something. So while its important that we denounce or make comments asserting what our positions are, particularly in light of negative comments that may come out of the white house, we cant just be negative against the president. We cant just be denouncing something. We have to be for something. So much of what was kind of a staple of our political conversations across our campaign was restoring civility and decency to our political process and discussions. When someone says something that i find objectionable or isnt in keeping with American Values and priorities, i think its important to speak out and use our voices in a powerful way. But overall i want to be talking about what im working for. The people in our district are focused on health care and education and real Economic Opportunity across our larger district. Those are the things im talking about and overall really working to bring back a level of civility to our political discussions so we can achieve Real Progress in washington. Kasie hunt is with us. She has a question. First of all, look forward to seeing you and working with you on the hill when you guys all arrive here in january. I want to ask you, though, as joe noted at the top of this, you have spoken out against nancy pelosi, said democrats need new leadership. The reality, though, is its not clear there is going to be somebody to step up and run against her. And even if they did inside the conference she may still be the choice. What would you do if you go down to if it goes to the floor, will you vote against nancy pelosi on the floor if its the choice between her and a republican . You know, ive been very clear with my voters on this since the beginning. Im going to vote for someone who i believe is going to be a new voice in the conversation in washington. And i have tremendous respect for everything that leader pelosi has been able to accomplish thus far in her very distinguished career in congress. But we have such an incredible. We need new leaders in the conversations. You will vote for somebody else on the floor of the house even if it means voting for somebody of the other party . No. I will be voting for someone who represents the values im working to achieve for our district. Im a democrat, im a strong democrat. And i believe we need new Republican National convention within the democratic party, but representation at the speaker level that will be driving productive conversations in this new post2018 election era. So thats who ill be voting for. Congratulations on your win, great campaign. Youre a former cia officer. Thank you for your service. Ive said often that the democrats need to find veterans, because one of the knocks on democrats sometimes is theres not that strength there, theres not that when you are a veteran it immediately brings to the table. You talked about you had 150 meet and greets. Did you feel that play out a lot with your audience, with your voters that they really visce l viscerally and emotionally responded to that . One of the things i talk about my background is its a commitment to serving a mission, its a commitment to service to this country. And so many of the veterans or former National Security people who are running, our commonality is we served the mission of upholding the constitution. We serve the mission of in my case collecting value intelligence that would inform our policy makers, our diplomats and our president. That was not a partisan mission. So i think its incredibly important that part of the discussion i think what resonated with voters is i was talking about being mission focused, i was talking about serving this country and really working to uphold the values that i worked so hard to protect when i was a cia officer. Congresswomanelect abigail spanbe spanberger, thank you so much. Congratulations. Thank you. Kasie hunt, you were talking about nancy pelosi. What is her viability at this point in keeping her role as speaker . Its not clear that theres anybody whos going to step up to run against her. There is a small rebellion led by people that are already in congress. Obviously there are many who are coming in who have said that they will not back nancy pelosi. But the reality is theyre set up for a tough situation. Were going to go to this conference vote thats behind closed doors. Thats a situation where there could be more people potentially than we expect who would vote against nancy pelosi. But just dont count her out, dont underestimate her. Shes the best vote counter possibly in the entire congress, definitely in the democratic party. She knows where her loyalists are. Her dad was a baltimore political boss. She really knows what shes doing. Shes been working really hard to fund raise for these candidates and make sure shes got her back yard cleaned up. The challenge is if in fact theres no clear alternative, nancy pelosi still needs to get 218 votes or really a majority of those voting on the house floor in january to be elected speaker. Democrats could cause a crisis of their own making if they dont figure out how to get to that number. Im interested to see how that pressure plays with those people who opposed her on the campaign trail. So lets just give everybody perspective. When newt gingrich, when some of the zeconservatives decided it s time for newt to leave, newt and his people were saying, well, you guys cant get rid of us because were going to win at the conference. We said, well, we dont have to win at the conference. Well do a motion to vacate the chair and withhold our votes. Its one thing to win inside the conference. The democrats can win nancy pelosi can win inside the conference, but of course what opponents of nancy pelosi would be able to hold over her head is the fact that we dont have to win at the conference. We just have to stop you from getting 218 votes when its called on the floor. Now, that said, isnt the fact that the democrats keep picking up a seat a day at a snails pace, isnt that what ultimately may give nancy pelosi and the democrats enough of a lead that they can allow certain members to vote against nancy pelosi on the floor and she still becomes the next speaker of the house . Thats absolutely right, joe. Nancy pelosi knows what her members need. There was a scenario she was telling them on the campaign trail do what you got to do. I think the same thing would be true on the house floor as long as shes getting what she need. The threshold going to the election, the thinking was that as long as their margin was more than ten or so, she would be completely fine. Its entirely possible thats how things are going to look when we get to january. But every single additional vote helps her. The wider that margin can be, the more breathing room she has. One thing i would say too is the Democratic Caucus a little bit different than the republican conference in some ways. And one really important way to think about it is the congressional black caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and sort of voting blocs and groups of people that nancy pelosi has spent a lot of time working with. So i think the scenario you suggest with newt certainly possible, but i think the dynamics are a little different here. Okay. Lets check business before the bell. Sarah . Watching oil prices today. Thats what people are talking about. Theyre jumping. Why . Because opec, the cartel of countries that try to control the price of oil, saudi arabia, iran and others, is talking about cutting production, which would mark a huge shift from what we have seen out of opec over the last year. Why . Well, theres increasing chatter among some of these country that is the market is going to be oversupplied into next year. The politics of oil have been very complicated lately. Ill try to summarize. President trump, as you know, just put sanctions on iran to limit the amount of oil they can sell on the global market. In anticipation of that, oil spiked to multiyear highs. However, since then, there have been worries about the Global Economy and President Trump granted waivers or exemptions for eight different countries. So the price of oil has actually fallen 20 since those multiyear highs. Now with talk that opec could cut production, that potentially could send oil higher, guys, and could also put pressure on saudi from the trump administration, who does not want to see them cut production and make prices for u. Now, First Impressions with Lieutenant Commander dan crenshaw. This is pete davidson, he looks like if the meth from breaking bad was a person. Not bad. So there, were even. One more. This is he looks like a troll doll with a tapeworm. Terrible. It was so good. That was congressmanelect crenshaw accepting Pete Davidsons apology on the show saturday night live. Mika, the great thing about it, first of all, it was wonderful to get the future congressman back on the show after terrible mistake was made the previous week and a mistake that everybody owed up to and, you know what, crenshaw was just showed the character of saying, you know what, i would much rather let somebody off the hook and teach people how to get along. It was a great moment. Had to move past things like this instead of being a political victim and thats exactly what he did. He showed great character. Yes, and took the opportunity to send an important message. Crenshaws just one of the record breaking number of veterans who will be joining the ranks of congress in 2019. Joining us now is retired marine rob barcot. An organization that looks to help elect veterans to office. Thank you for being on the show this morning. It hooks like a Great Success this time around. What did it take . Thanks for having me on. Were a new organization that launched around this time on veterans day last year. And dan, Lieutenant Commander crenshaws victory was around 17 of vieterans we supported. Our organization has taken on a really hard problem which is dysfunction in our congress. Viewers may not know that record low levels of veteran participation in congress, its a little bit under 20 and in the past its been as high as 70 . We dont think thats a coincidence. So were helping to get a new generation of veterans elected who have signed our pledge to serve in a crosspartisan way and put character first. But thats the key though, isnt it . This is a bipartisan effort for the last year and a half, quite successful effort. Its actually we are bipartisan, we call it crosspartisan because were open to backing folks from not only the two parties but also independents. We endorsed a total of about 40 veterans from a surge of candidates that ran across the country. All those vets signed our pledge and serve with integrity and courage, including the courage to Work Together once theyre elected. What are the other people who helped you form this group and helped select candidates . Sure, we have a couple great americans with strong bipartisan credentialings, giants like secretary gates and admiral mullin to a lot of develops i served with during compatriots of mine, folks that ranged from people like j. D. Vance, ryan mannon, nate thick. All americans that recognize what were see being right now is really unsustainable. Its a super hard problem. But we need solutions. Were a can do country. Thats what were trying to bring back into the fold. The real challenge is not a desire to serve again. Many veterans have a desire to serve again and thats why theyve gone through this brutal process. Past reason why veteran representation is so low is the costs have gone out of control in these elections. Most of the marines i served with didnt have access to the moneyed classes or the political networks. And the cost of elections have gone up by 5x in the last 20 years. We tried to help lower those barriers to entry. And helped change the dialogue so they could win. What we saw among the candidates, even those that last, was that the veterans overperformed. Most of them ran on messages like putting the country first, so it was really encouraging. Thank you for being on the show. Congratulations on the work so far. Its time now for final thoughts this morning, joe. Im going to say, as weve been talking about all morning, you know, donald trump tried to be disruptive in a way that spoke to a small segment of americas population. It didnt work. Hes going to lose close to 40 seats in the house. Didnt make the gains he should have made in the senate. And governorships breaking the democrats way as well. So why wont he change . And Donny Deutsch, thats a question i ask you. If Donald Trumps not going to change, given how destructive his behavior was to his electorate chances, what about republicans . Shouldnt they think twice about following him down this failed path . Might be time for some to crawl out from under their cowardice rock. I think youre seeing what might be coming this week from mr. Mueller. You see it in his panic there. Well, barcot summoned it up. The platoon does whats best for the group and thats what we have to do as americans. Mika, final thoughts. Our troops are sitting at the border waiting for the caravan. Say no more. Joe. All right. That does it for us this morning. Lets go now to stephanie ruhle. Thanks, mika, thanks, joe. Good morning, everyone. Im stephanie ruhle. Ive got to start with the most destructive wildfire in californias history. It is also a deadly one. Claiming more than 2 dozen live also at this point. At this hour, hundreds remain unaccounted for. Were just waiting to go back. Were helpless. We just stand here and s
