There will be this and that at the convention. Who are they going to pick . Ive beat everybody. But i dont mean beat. I beat the hell out of them, right . Beat the hell out of them. And were going to beat hillary. And it would be helpful if the republicans could help us a little bit, you know . Okay . And good morning. It is monday, june 20th. Welcome to morning joe. With us on set along with me and joe, we have legendary columnist and msnbc contributor, Mike Barnicle. Former Communications Director for president george w. Bush, nicole wallace. Managing editor of bloomberg blocks and cohost of with all due respect that airs at 6 00 p. M. On msnbc, Mark Halperin, and msnbc political analyst and professor at the university of Chicago School of public policy, democratic congressman, harold ford jr. And joe, if i didnt have nbc sports intern graham tremly trailing my daughter everywhere and in my life, i would not understand this cleveland thing, but i do. I have been given the speech. It was amazing. It was an amazing comeback for a team that hasnt that wasnt expected to win. Had the best player in the nba, and yet he went down to miami and promised to bring a champ n championship back to cleveland. Nobody thought lebron james could do it. He did and he came up big near the end. With an unbelievable block and then cleveland, winning their first championship since, i guess, 64. Loserville, no war. And as somebody that grew up in atlanta, georgia and understands what its like to be called loserville, usa, i know that is a heavy sports burden that they gladly have lifted off of them. Were going to talk about that a little bit. But mika, lets talk politics very quickly. For those who were hoping that there was going to be some turnaround, some pivot for donald trump this weekend, i wrote it down, he talked about profiling mosques, of course, hed been talking about a muslim registry. Hes even talked in the past about making muslims carry cards. Sounds a lot like nazi, germany. Why dont you just put a patch right on their shoulder. And then started talking about getting guns in the hands of people and nightclubs at 2 00 a. M. A position so extreme that even the nra had to come out and call him out on that. This is there is no pivot and it continues and thats why the gop appears to be in open rebellion right now. Well, it seems so. And by the way, there was a cop in the nightclub. It did not really help the situation, given the gun that he had. Donald trumps complaints about party unity come amid newly revealed plans to stop his nomination from delegates to next months convention. Antitrump delegates, many of them former ted cruz supporters, hope to change party rules that would allow them to vote for whomever they want. The change would come in the rules committee, chaired by excongresswoman, Enid Mickelson of utah, along with ron coffman, an ally of mitt romney and the bush family. Mickelson has been critical of trump in recent weeks saying, neither Hillary Clinton nor donald trump are going to be people that we poison our children toward and say, i want you to be just like them when you grow up. Responding to the heightened speculation, the rnc Communications Director put out a statement. There is no organized effort, strategy, or leader of this socalled movement. It is nothing more than a media creation and a series of tweets. But last night, supporters in a Group Calling itself free the delegates claimed several hundred delegates are behind them. And that they will raise money for a staff. On meet the press, House Speaker and Convention Chairman, paul ryan, addressed brewing signs of a rebellion, while trump shared his thoughts on multiple platforms. Shouldnt delegates, if they have a if theyre having Second Thoughts about it, have an opportunity to express those Second Thoughts and be unbound and let the will of the convention decide for sure they want him . Thats not my place to decide. My place, because of, again, this role i have, which i feel has very important responsibilities is to call balls and strikes and just play it by the rules. It is not my job to tell delegates what to do, what not to do, or to weigh in on things like that. They write the rules, they make their decisions. But all i want to make sure of, its done above board, clearly, honestly, and by the rules . I think were going to have a Great Convention and i think were going to go into a great victory. It would be nice if the republicans stuck together. I think because im a different kind of a candidate. And you know, paul ryan said that. Im a different kind of a candidate. I think i win either way. I can win one way or the other. With them or without them . I do believe that. I think because i obviously won the primaries without them. Im an outsider and i won the primaries. I do believe that we can win either way. But it would be nice if we stuck together. How would you like to have a party where myself and others travel the country and worked for a long time. Now, were shorter than i thought, because remember, i was supposed to maybe be able to pull it out at the convention and we pulled it out two months before the convention. And one of the people who probably hasnt quite given up yet, one of the people was trying to buy up all of the second ballot people, right . And ikei kept saying, let them have them, because its expensive to get them. The largest audience in the history of cable television. Now, i dont think it was for jeb, but maybe im wrong, okay . By the way, jeb is working on the movement, just so you understand. I love competition like that. I love it. So, so, look, look. Low energy. I didnt say it, you did. I get a kick when these poor, poor people that have been fighting me forever, they just dont understand. They cant beat me. They just cant beat me. So now i hear, and we just finish off. So i hear they want to try to do something at the convention. Wouldnt it be funny if trump gets recordsetting votes, the biggest in history, has an unbelievable number of states. And somebody that was beat like a drum says, our nominee is that. First of all, its not legal. Cant do it. Second of all, the Republican National committee is with me 100 . Over the last week, donald Trump Campaigned in five states that have republicans and the Governors Mansion, but not a single one appeared with him in public. Governor Brian Sandoval of nevada will not currently commit to voting for trump, while Arizona Governor doug doocy, georgia governor nathan deal and mccrory attended private fundraisers. And none of the republican senators campaigned with him either, although there was business on capitol hill. Joe . Mark halperin, obviously, a lot of Republican Leaders feel like theyre an absolutely terrible position right now and this move quietly grows to try to get donald trump pushed to the side. It is certainly a long shot. But whats it looking like right now . Its a fascinating moment in the history of trumps relationship with the Republican Party. The big turning point is now, the leaders of the party would prefer trump not be the nominee. Theyre willing to have a very messy convention if that could somehow happen. They dont want to be seen as leading the movement. They know it would fail if its seen as elites trying to take the nomination away from them. Theyre hoping to behind the scenes, orchestrate a little bit of grassroots organic support. Trumps right. This is being orchestrated. But there is some grassroots support among some delegates to say, we want to be able to vote our conscience. We know paul ryan said to chuck todd, people need to be able to vote their congress, members of Congress Need to decide on their own, trump is right that people are plotting against him. I dont know that it will succeed, but it is a big moment. He says he wants the party unified, hell have to work to unify it. Because people are not out there, backing him up right now. Well, and nicole, if you look at what donald trump said over the weekend, again, i just dont think it would be that hard for him to actually throw water on this fire. Instead, he just goes out to the garage, gets kerosene, and just starts dumping it on the flames. I mean you lots of kerosene. You have him talking, again, about a muslim not the muslim ban, but profiling. Hes a guy thats talked about a registry for muslims. He talked about people in the nightclub that were drinking. If theyd all been packing heat, there wouldnt have been as many killings. Taking positions so extreme that even wayne pierre has to come out and say, no. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Thats dangerous. I mean, hes not. And listen to his speeches. Hes still talking about polls and cable news ratings like hes running in an early republican primary state. Still doesnt get it. Yeah. I think the story, though, at this point, its never been about the elites, so i think we should resist the temptation to make it about the elites now. My sense is that everyone is waiting for something that will never happen. Trumps waiting for respect that he thinks he deserves for his stunning primary victory, never going to happen. People are horrified by the racial undertones of this candidacy. The republican ruling class is waiting for him to stop cloaking his candidacy and demagoguery around racial issues and crazy statements around the ones you just listened. Never going to happen. The people around trump and his deep inner circle are waiting for him to pick up a book and read it instead of reading twitter. Never going to happen. So this campaign, from now until election day, is going to people are going to make their decision, sort of, in the context, and in the climate of all these standoffs. Theyre not going to end. So as joe mentioned, in the wake of the deaths of 49 people in an orlando nightclub, donald trump suggested profiling may be necessary going forward. You said you would check, respectfully, the mosques. How do you respectfully check a mosque . Well, you do as they used to do in new york, prior to this mayor dismantling. By the way, if you go to france right now, theyre doing it in france. In fact, in some instances, theyre closing down mosques. I think profiling is something were going to have to start thinking about as a cup and other countries do it. And you look at israel and others and they do it. And they do it successfully. And, you know, i hate the concept of profiling. But, we have to start using common sense and we have to use, you know, we have to use our heads. And on the campaign trail, trump suggested what might have helped stop the shootings in orlando. What happened was an assault on our country. It was an assault on the gay community. Our whole theme is make America Great again. But ive ive revised it. Its make America Great again, its make america safe again. Safe. If you think orlando was the end of it, with this weak attitude and this pathetic president that we have, it wasnt, folks. It wasnt. President obama is trying to make terrorism into guns. And its not guns, folk s. It is not guns. It is not guns. This is terrorism. Nobody will protect your Second Amendment like Donald John Trump. Nobody. Nobody. If in that club, you had some people, not a lot of people, because you dont need a lot of people, but if you had somebody with a gun strapped on to their hip, somebody with a gun strapped on to their ankle, and you had bullets going in the opposite direction, right at this animal who did this, you would have had a very, very different result. Believe me, folks. Very different result. What donald trump has said is what the American People know is common sense, that if somebody has been there, to stop this faster, fewer people would have died. Thats not controversial, thats common sense. So you dont like the idea of people going into nightclubs armed to the teeth. Of course, no one thinks people should go into a nightclub drinking and carrying firearms. That defies common sense and defies the law. I dont think you should have firearms where people are drinking, but ill tell you this, everybody, every american starts to needs to start having a security plan, we need to be able to protect ourselves, because theyre coming. Note to donald trump and to that nra guy, according to police, an orlando officer was working extra duty at the pulse nightclub. There was someone there. There was someone there. So dont change the facts to back up your really bad points. And quote, engaged in a gun battle with the guy, omar mateen, before the gunman went deeper into the club. Joe, its so hard to watch donald trump, because he could be doing so much with this. He could be doing so much with this. He could be doing so much better. It is an embarrassment, every day, the embarrassment deepens, because he just simply refuses to stop playing to the lowest common denominator. And mike, that lowest common denominator over the weekend got donald trump saying that people Drinking Alcohol in a nightclub at 2 00 a. M. , should have guns strapped to their waists and firing those weapons. He said it, bullets, gunfight at the o. K. Coral. Gunfight at an orlando nightclub at 2 00 a. M. When bullets are flaying across not just there, hes suggesting that people take guns, strapped to their waists, to nightclubs. Something that even the nra will not follow him down that dark rabbit hole. Well, they seem to be no, they didnt. No. They said they said, nobodys suggesting that people drinking alcohol in nightclubs at 2 00 a. M. Should be carrying guns into that nightclub, mike. This is insanity. Well, joe, its a little bit more than insanity, too. I mean, donald trump is running, ladies and gentlemen, for the presidency of the United States. The level of misinformation, innuendo, ignorance, rumor that comprise most of what he says and most of what he said over the weekend is staggering. It is staggering and it lends credence to the fact that apparently there are a group of people, delegates, perhaps, trying to turn this nomination over, before they get to cleveland. Its never happened before in the history of american politics in this country, that you have this level of incompetence confronting another candidate for presidency. Its amazing. Absolutely amazing. Mark halperin, where are we, Mark Halperin. What are you hearing inside the Trump Campaign and around the Trump Campaign . I mean, what ive heard is at least, on my side, a lot of despondents, that this guy cannot grow. Even people close to donald trump shocked that he has wasted the past five weeks the way he has and hes wasted another weekend with nonsense like this. Well, there are a lot of people that are indignant and trying to figure out, as nicole suggested, things arent going to change. It would be effortless for him to Start Talking about the economy, changing washington, not getting on to these side areas, and people around him are amazed at how serene he is. I talked to someone who spent a fair amount of time with him last week who said, east doing what he always does. Hes on the plane, watching cable news. Theres no sense from him of urgency about changing course at a time when the polls, the fundraising, the television advertising, the Political Support are not in his favor. But it would be very easy for him to change, but theres no indication to anyone that i talked to this weekend that he plans to change or thinks he needs to. Which, mika, seems to answer the question weve been asking now for the past three weeks, does Donald John Trump want to actually win . And all of the evidence, if you look at all of the objective evidence on what is required to win a president ial race, the answer is no. He is going to turn the white house over to Hillary Clinton. Hes going to turn the United States Supreme Court over to Hillary Clinton. He can say what he wants, but anybody that knows politics knows that this is the equivalent of a guy training for a marathon and five weeks before the marathon, all hes doing is sitting on his couch, drinking beer, talking about how great of a runner he is. Smoking a cigarette. And dont forget the senate and maybe the house, too. And by the way, these republicans that are saying, oh, you need to just blindly get behind him. They dont understand, hes not only turning the white house over to Hillary Clinton by his actions, and he is, hes turning the Supreme Court for a generation. Those of us who actually care about things like this, and have been worried about things like this for decades, know that his actions today lead to a Supreme Court that liberals dominate for a generation. The senate endangered. You look at the numbers, were starting to see that. And the house of representatives possibly also even in danger. And were making a warning today, or at least i am, because its going to be too late, soon. We were talking about this six weeks ago, before we skidded into the ditch adds badly as he has. He doesnt have that much time to clean things up. And it just keeps getting worse every day. Nor do the leader who still endorsing him at this point. They have a lot of time to clean that up, because what weve got here, at the very least, is their true colors are coming out. Those who we thought had convictions, those who we thought were the great hope. Those who we thought would lead abuse the future are showing their true colors. Theyre fearful, theyre scared to lose certain things in the shortterm, in the longterm, theyre letting themselves down, theyre letting down their constituents. Meanwhile, senator Elizabeth Warren continues her verbal assault of donald trump. On friday, she visited Hillary Clintons Campaign Headquarters in brooklyn and she gave the staff a pep talk, saying, im with you all the way. The very next day, she gave the keynote address at the New Hampshire democratic partys convention and peppered her speech with trump insults. Youve heard of donald trump. Every day, we learn more about him. And every day, it becomes clearer that he is just a small, insecure money grubber, who doesnt care about anyone or anything that doesnt have the trump name splashed all over it. Every day it becomes clearer that he is a thinskinned racist bully. And every day, it becomes clearer he will never be president of the United States. Ahh, trump university, which his own employees explained was just a big lie and a fraudulent scheme. Just this week, trump sent his lawyers back to court to beg and plead that the videos of what he said under oath are kept secret from the American People. Oh, poor little donald is shaking in his highpriced italian loafers, begging the court to protect him. Terrified about what happens if those videos go public and hes held accountable. Are you scared, donald . Well, you should be. Were coming. And they are, joe. Wow. I mean, its funny, you kind of thought Chris Christie would be doing this for donald trump, but you cant do this unless its passionately, truly in you. And you truly believe what will youre saying. And i think thats why we dont see Chris Christie out there, being the attack dog that we thought he would be for donald trump. Look at Elizabeth Warren. Look at her shes just taken off. And the Clinton Campaign is smart to bring her on. Well, mika, first of all, donald trump is all about donald trump. And donald trump is not going to let Chris Christie or anybody get out on the stage that may outshine him. They cant. You look at the way that he has treated Chris Christie so far, and youve got somebody look at New Hampshire, an extraordinarily talented man, but people like donald trump are afraid of Chris Christie outshining him. So harold ford, it remains the donald trump show. And he doesnt know how to play this game, not in a general election. Yes, he won a primary against a weak field in a general election. He cant play this game. It looks, though, as if Elizabeth Warren is getting more and more comfortable playing this game. It also looks as if she might be playing out for Vice President and doing it fairly effectively. I would agree with that assessment. Let me say two things about trump. One, we said this last week, hes made it a point to run the campaign that he wants to run. He believes in both john mccain and mitt romney ran campaigns that did not stress and emphasize their strengths and the strengths of the Republican Party. Now, its true, trump is at odds with the party, but he believes he is projecting whats most appealing, most compelling, and what most voters want to support when they look at the Republican Party. Number three, hes not going to back down from this until he is consistently punished in the polls. I think, in fact, he enjoys the fight between him and the elites. And if thats what harold, i saw charts this weekend that showed his numbers absolutely collapsing. He is being punished in the polls. And he keeps doubling down. I just, i wonder i keep wondering about that vanity fair article that said hes just right to get a hardcore group of supporters that he can use to start his own cable news channel when this is over. He could be doing that, but my final point is this. The Clinton Campaign has made clear, were going to make this an effort to build or reassemble the coalition from 2012 and 2008. And we dont believe, to your point, that trump is going to be able to appeal to a broad, Diverse Group of americans or enough americans in order to beat us. So youll see more of Elizabeth Warren, i think, from the democrats. You will see more progressive talk, youll see more cory booker, youll see more president obama. All in an effort to ensure that this Big Coalition obama was able to build in 08 and sustain in 2012 is one that mrs. Clinton can tap in 16. And to your point, if she does, she wins. Trump cant win with this very passionate, small group of americans supporting him. If hes able to expand that and do some of the things that you and mika are talking about, if he doesnt do that the party. What happens to the party . Still ahead, trump wants to expand the map to include rust belt states, but is he in danger of losing deep red utah . Plus i used to ran as an outsider, although i used to be total establishment. One year, two days. Before i ran, i was very much i shouldnt tell you, youll leave immediately. I was sort of establishment. I used to give vast amounts of money, right . And as soon as i ran, i became an insurgent. I became an outsider. Guys that were my friends says, youre an outsider. And you know why . Because im going to do whats right for you. Im not going to do whats right for them. I know the game better than anybody. How did a billionaire, selfdeclared member of the establishment win over poorly educated and poor voters. We have the first indepth look at just how donald trump wooed millions to take the republican primary. But first, heres bill karins with a check on another day of dangerous heat across the country. Bill . Yeah, mika. Our record heat turned deadly yesterday. Four heatrelated fatalities in arizona, including a couple of hikers that were out even with a bunch of water and they still fell to the elements. It hit a 120 in gillmore, arizona, yuma, arizona, it was 118. Phoenix and tucson was 115. Didnt shatter alltime records, but this was one of the top five hottest days for many people in the state of arizona. Today, were doing it again, 26 Million People under excessive heat warnings. All the way there las vegas to vegas to yuma to phoenix to tucson. Even san diego is under a heat advisory. That doesnt even happen all that often. And as far as the temperatures go, the heat dome over the top today, slowly weakens, it barely weakens, as we go throughout the next couple of days. Today, 123 in palm springs. 116 in yuma and vegas, 115. And i mention it cools off a little, not a lot. Were still 110 plus. The other thing you need to know, if were in the ohio valley, we have 28 million people with a chance of severe thunderstorms today and wind damage. This is with a cold front coming through. Buffalo, cleveland, indianapolis, st. Louis, and kansas city, watch out this afternoon for a chance of a few strong storms. New york city, philadelphia, washington, d. C. , warming up today. Many of you will be 90 to 95. Cold front comes through tomorrow. Youre watching morning joe. Well be right back. Its more than a network. Its how you stay connected. Its been a movement. Ive been on the cover of Time Magazine so many times. And the cover of everything. I feel like a super model, except like times ten. Okay . Its true. Im a supermodel. Im on the cover of these magazines. Im on the cover of the biggest magazines i dont even know about and i cant even read the story because if i did, i wouldnt get any work done. Ive never seen anything like it. And its not about me, im doing a good job as a messenger, but im a messenger. You know, donald, even the best supermodels in the world have great agents and great managers that help manage their careers. And they dont do it by themselves. Hes a supermodel. You should look into that and actually get some help and listen to people who want to help you, including your family. And friends. So Mark Halperin, we already have response from donald this morning on twitter, and it looks like hell try to clair fay statement that weve been talking about this morning. Up early tweeting, by coincidence, on the very topic weve been discussing, which is his statement which was too much for even the nra about arming people. Well, he doesnt watch so he couldnt be coincidence. He heard about it. He said that, when i said that in the orlando club, you have some people with guns, i was obviously talking about additional guards and employees, and therefore he means not clubgoers, but rather, employees. So that would be a clarification about his position on who should be armed. Well, Mike Barnicle, it certainly didnt sound that way when he was talking about people with guns strapped to their waists and their legs, whatever. It does suggest several things, Mike Barnicle, one, that perhaps donald trump understands that he is continuing to overstep the boundaries and he needs to pull back. But does he . Does he understand that . Hes trying to correct it, rectify it, amend it in a tweet. But what he said is what he said. People with ankle holsters, people with guns on their hips in a club, the results would be a lot different. Yeah, it would be a lot different. You would have more people dead. More people shot. More people hurt. Which is why the nra is even against it. Mika, you know, something you brought up a long time ago, and i think even said it to donald several months ago, after he diddid the aipac speech and used teleprompters, you said, instead of just winging it all the time, it would be easier for him, better for him to read prepared speeches from teleprompters and protecting himself from just winging and it making these statements that he could get by with in a primary campaign with a bunch of weak customers but youll never get by this in a general election. I think the still gets him in trouble is the fact that hes still, as you said from the beginning, hes winging it. Hes making it up as he goes along. Instead of listen to cory, instead of listening to paul manafort, instead of listening to the people that are surrounding him, trying to get their message to him, he just cant stay on message. Long before this time in the process, someone like donald trump would be not just talking to his team, but talking to Foreign Policy leaders, talking to former politicians, talking to world leaders, reading, learning about how to couch certain statements and to be very careful about your words. And instead, he is literally still vomiting out anything he thinks at the tip of his head that he might have seen on tv, and i dont know what channel recently. And its pathetic, number one. Its sad for the party. Its sad for the country. And its sad for his candidacy, which could have done so much. And let me add to that, harold ford, its sad for the millions and millions of people that voted for him in the primary. And i know they did it for many reasons, but partly, they did it because they wanted to defeat Hillary Clinton. They wanted to stop liberals the from taking over the Supreme Court for a generation. They wanted to keep control of the senate, but mainly, they wanted somebody in there that would fight for them. He cant fight for them if he loses 30 states. Look, again, i dont think theres any doubt about that. And you made the point about some of the polling. And i think theres some polling this morning that shows that maybe hes chipping a little bit into mrs. Clintons lead, although she still enjoys a commanding lead over him. Again, i just dont think hes going to listen to folks until hes absolutely forced to. He enjoys this. And he believes hes thriving on it. And until you show him something, not you, but others are able to demonstrate and prove to him in a sustained way that you can succeed, going down this path, until crowds start showing up and people stop clapping, and frankly, hes raising issues that are on peoples minds. Hes not raising things outside of the mainstream. Hes talking about security, which is clearly on peoples minds and the kinds of things people have to do. I dont agree with his approach, but hes talking about those things that frankly, conversations that are happening around dinner tables and kitchen tables across the country. So its going to be interesting to see if he eventually takes the advice that youve laid out this morning or if he cons to travel down this dangerous path. They think they have time. Theyve described this period to me as a dead season. They think they can reset this race. They being the Trump Campaign. At the debates. I said, what about the convention . They said, oh, yeah, that too. They think the opportunity to reset their standing will come in the convention weak. You run campaigns, can you do that . Those are big moments, but the you fall too far behind its too far too many damage has been done, joe. I think, mika, you see that guy on stage having a great time. Hes enjoying himself. This is a guy whos not focused on winning. Hes not. This is a guy whos focused on having a great time. This is a guy whos focused on fighting every single fight that he can fight. This is not how a person who wants to get elected president acts. Chris christie, paul ryan, Republican Leaders who have these weird tepid endorsements for trump, this is your chance. Its not going to change. This is your chance, okay . Youve made a mistake. You should now make it right. You need to get up and walk away. Its not hard to stand up for the right thing. You need to do the right thing. For yourself and for your people and maybe for your political future. I dont know. Right . Maybe they still think, mika, he can be changed. Maybe they still believe that with a convention coming up, he can become more disciplined. Hes just wasted five, six weeks. And people closest to him will say, its tragic, the six weeks that hes wasted. Where he can still be ahead of Hillary Clinton in the polls. Instead of down by 10, 11, 12 points. This is your chance. Its actually passing. Coming up, could the Supreme Court be even more in the balance than people thought . Reports this morning that another Supreme Court seat could open up after the election. The Supreme Court could be issuing new decisions on abortion and immigration as early as this morning. Meanwhile, the potential retirement of another conservative justice has the political world buzzing. Anonymous sources tell the Washington Examiner that associate Justice Clarence thomas is considering retirement after the election. Thomas was appointed to the bench in 1991 by president george h. W. Bush, coupled with the vacancy of the late antonin scalias seat, the departure of another conservative stalwart like thomas could fundamentally reshape the court. Its a notion that donald trump emphasized at his rallies over the weekend. I just had a meeting with some great people. And they just said, mr. Trump, a lot of times during your speeches, you dont mention one of the most important things that youre going to do. Supreme court justices. Were going to have great Supreme Court judges. Now, if Hillary Clinton gets in, folks, weve got venezuela. Take a look at whats happening in venezuela. Weve got high taxes and weve got a country thats going to be a disaster. And were heading in that direction now. Okay. Were going to be venezuela. Mark halperin, whos he talking about, judges . Look, one of the best things hes done in terms of unifying the party was put out that list of respected judges who he says the kind of people he put on the Supreme Court, thats the dif thing people want him to see. A lot of republicans are saying that you can turn things around still. You can have big swings. Trump can come back. Particularly if he names a good running mate. People want to see him maybe name a prospective secretary of state, secretary of defense, treasury. He needs to reassure people, but he spent the weekend making people more nervous and giving them less of a sense. But the judge thing is something that list really did a lot of good for him with conservatives. That one piece of paper got the mcconnell endorsement. Got mcconnell who sat right here said, oh, im in. That one piece of paper is all i needed so they give a list. I understand thats extremely important. But if donald trump said, now you need to go jump off the George Washington bridge, do they do that too . This was reassurance, though, that he understood how theres nothing reassuring about donald trump right now. There are singleissue voters who will vote simply on the question of the Supreme Court selection. Who of any pedigree in the Foreign Policy establishment would agree to have their names put forward, right now on Foreign Policy . Thats a great question. Secretary of state, secretary of defense. Vice president. Who in the lrkt is clamoring for this . I want this. And i would love to see this, also. But i dont believe a majority of people in this country who are not elites who make up the overwhelming majority of the country want to that from either candidate. They want to hear their plans, but i dont think its going to reassure, as much as it should be, because the rules have changed in this business. Joe . The thing is, mika, there are a lot of people who have been mentioned as a possible Vice President ial running mate who are backing away. Bob corker was one this past week who started backing slowly away. And i remember your question to Mitch Mcconnell when he was talking about the Supreme Court justices. You said, what has donald trump done in his political life that gives you any reason to believe that hell stick to that list . And by the way, donald trump even said that that list, he wasnt bound by that list. That he might pick somebody else outside of that list. Look, this is a guy that voted for Hillary Clinton. This is a guy that said not so many years ago that Hillary Clinton was going to be a very strong secretary of state. He contributed to her campaign. He contributed to democrats campaigns forever. So, again, political reassurances when it comes to donald trump have never really been that comforting for those that have actually clung to them. Right. You know, hes run out the clock on a few things, including peoples patience that he will lead this country in a positive and hopeful way. And some of the things hes done of late have undermined his ability to attack his opponent. Its totally deep sixing this candidacy. Still ahead from a field of 17 candidates to the presumptive nominee, how did donald trump win over millions of voters in a totally unique way . Its a threepart series kicking off with the opening installment, the United States of trump. The digital team uses polling, data, and wideranging interview to examine what is driving his success. And joining us now, nbc news political reporter, benji sarlin. Benji, lets just go through them. First you start with the two periods of trump. What are they . We divided the race into an early period in the primaries, which is iowa to ohio and florida on march 15th, which is when rubio drops out. And have a Second Period thats everything after that until indiana. Which is when cruz and kasich drops out. The reason we did this, because what a trump voter looks like is different when hes leading with 30 in the National Polls versus the end when hes leading with 50 in the polls. Early on, you have voters who are, for example, less educated, more bluecollar. He was doing very well in counties where there was a lot of economic distress. But by the Second Period, things had changed, and he starts winning counties that he wasnt able to before. And then you have poor voters also picking up votes in more diverse places. And trumps voter base expands. Explain when that happens. So when you divide the race into these two periods, in the very beginning, you look at some factors, some of them trump has mentioned himself as a factor in his success. And one of the big ones was, how much a countys average income had grown or shrank over the last decade. Now, if you look, we have a cool interactive up on our site here, at which counties voted for him based on that trait. In that first period, he was winning 78 of counties who had lost the most income over that period. But he was winning only 46 of the counties with the biggest economic gain. So was when you saw trump losing big in alexandria, thats the type of county that typically did not vote for trump. But period two, hes doing better with those lowincome counties, but hes expanded his appeal and winning 78 of counties with high income growth. Montgomery, maryland, which like alexandr alexandria, an affluent d. C. Suburb, many thought kasich would win it, but trump managed to win it. Joe, this is mirroring some of what weve seen out there. It certainly is. Also, if you look at the second phase of Trump Supporters, it also explains, nicole, why the Republican Party is going to have a hard time unseating him from the convention, because he got converts, at some point, who said, okay, you know what, hes not perfect, i wouldnt vote for him. Normally he says crazy things, but, gee, look what hes done inside the Republican Party when nobodys said he could win. Maybe the only guy who can take on the clinton machine and win. And we remember exactly when it was postwisconsin. You break it down a little different, but i remember sitting around here, and postwisconsin, he was able to pull himself in, and you perfectly, you know, you dont have the data to support that, but i love your character. I was reading this to my husband during the basketball game. He really loved that. But talking about your two characters at the beginning . Because they to me, thats what i think of when we think of a trump voter. Thats right. I hope the story talking to two voters in indianapolis or from indianapolis. Theyre matt and joe. And they are both auto mechanics. Joe owns the auto store and they had taken off early from work. These are guys in their work clothes, ripped jeans, rough hands. Right out of central casting, right . Yeah. They were telling me. This is unusual, but this was interesting. They were telling me they both registered to vote for the first time just to vote for trump, because normally theyre not particularly interested in politics. They usually dont feel parties represent them. And when i tweeted out a photo of these guys at the time, it went viral among Trump Supporters online, who were a big force themselves. They recognize this as a kind of core supporter, that theyre very proud to have on their side. And it was very essential to trump success. Fascinating. Theres so much more here. Go ahead, joe. Yeah, mika, those are the supporters that are necessary to win a republican primary. And thats what we have said all along. Those are the people after well, actually, after he went down the escalator, we said, he could win the primary, when a few others thought he could. But voters look very different now that we come to phase iii. And the electorate expands. Instead of needing 12 million votes, you need 60 to 65 million votes, and right now, among this subset of voters in america, they just arent there. We shall see, though. You can check out the entire story at nbc news. Com trump. Benji sarlin, thank you very much. Great work. Coming up at the top of the hour, concerns mount over the fitness of Donald Trumps campaign. Does he have a campaign . Exactly . And now he tells nbcs hallie jackson they wont get really started until after the convention. Were going to have her interview. Let me say, from a town who was known as loserville, usa, when i was born in atlanta, georgia, i feel your pain. This has to be a great night. What an extraordinary way to do it. Making history in the process. Never before has a team come back from 31 in the finals. Theres been so much that cleveland has suffered through, being called the mistake on the lake, the cuyahoga ripper, catching fire, the fumble in the drive for people who are browns fans, back to back in 1987 and 1988, i mean, i still love the guy, but you have chose ton let go, right, of those statements. No, no. And you know, the browns leave us, they go to baltimore, they win a championship. And then the hometown boy, i mean, a guy that we love, that we nurtured, we raised he left. He left he goes to miami and won not one, but two championships. And mika, ive got to say, its so exciting for cleveland. What a great country. They win the nba championship one month and their entire city burns to the ground the next at the donald trump joe were going to be going there. This is exciting. Such a wonderful time. And personally, i am bring riot gear, mika. I hope, i hope lily makes riot gear. She might. Can i tell you how Many Democrats are volunteering at the convention because theyre so proud of their city and they want people to see with a great city cleveland is. I swear, how long have we known each other, it is decades. I have never seen Chris Jansing unhinged, ever. She is literally i might cry, so. Okay if you want to cry, lets talk about the president ial election and donald trump. Donald trumps complaints about party unity come amid newly revealed plans to stop his nomination from delegates to next months convention. And trump delegates, many of them former ted cruz supporters hope to change party rules that would allow them to vote for whoever they want. The change would come in the rules committee, chaired by excongresswoman Enid Mickelson of utah, along with ron kauffman, an ally of mitt romney and the bush family. Mickelson has been criticism of trump in recent weeks, telling local leaders, quote, neither Hillary Clinton or donald trump are going to be the people that we point our children toward and say, i want you to be just like them when you grow up. Responding to the heightened speculation the rnc Communications Director put out a statement, there is no organized effort, strategy, or leader of this socalled movement. It is nothing more than a media creation and a series of tweets. But last night, supporters in a Group Calling itself free the delegates claimed several hundred delegates are behind them. And that they will raise money for staff. And over the last week, donald Trump Campaigned in five states that have republicans in the Governors Mansion. But not a single one appeared with him in public. Governor Brian Sandoval of nevada will not currently commit to voting for trump, while Arizona Governor, doug doocy, and pat mccrory attended private fundraisers with him. Would not be seen in public with him. And none of the ten republican senators in states trump visited campaigned with him either. Though there was business on capitol hill. Joining us now from capitol hill, nbc news correspondent, hallie jackson. Hallie, you caught up with donald trump over the weekend. What is he saying . Reporter just before his las vegas rally. One of the things we talked about was this lack of party unity. You talked about him being 0 for 5 with this public appearance with governors over the weekend. We talked about his comments from speaker paul ryan, as well. Ryan telling chuck todd, of course, that lawmakers should vote their conscience. So youve got the topranking republican in congress telling his conference, they dont necessarily need to back the presumptive gop nominee. Its eyebrowraising stuff, and its something that i asked donald trump about. Listen. What we have to do with the Republican Party is unify. I hope to see speaker ryan focusing on the budget. Its a big job to get the budget down the way it should be. And other than that, i have no view on it. It doesnt bother you, the most powerful republican in congress isnt telling his people to fully back the presumptive nominee . I dont know that thats what hes saying. He has endorsed me. And i tell you, you see the crowds im getting with, you saw last night in houston, you see today in nevada, i think were going to do very, very well. Reporter you told me recently that your campaign hasnt even really started yet. We really havent started. We start pretty much after the convention. Reporter whats taking so long . Why wait . Oh, well, im doing well, she has a head start, but ive raised a lot of money for the party. Were doing very well. Millions of dollars just this weekend. Reporter not as much as her. I dont think we need, frankly, as much. And shes selling herself to wall street and the wall street fat cats are all putting up a lot of money for her. And i dont think we need that money, frankly. Look a were doing right now. This is like a commercial, right, except its tougher than a normal commercial. Were going to raise a lot of money. Ive raised al of money this weekend. Im raising for the Republican Party. If you look at reince, he will say weve done an amazing job in a short period of time. We have had a Great Convention. It would be nice if the republicans stuck together. I think because im a different kind of a candidate, and, you know, paul ryan said that. Im a different kind of a candidate. I think that win either way. I can win one way or the other. With them or without them . I do believe that. I think, because i obviously won the primaries without them. Im an outsider and i won the primaries. I do believe that we can win either way, but it would be nice if we stuck together. Last one before you before they pull me out of here. Your critics say, within your own party, your campaign is not organized well enough, it doesnt have the money or the infrastructure or the battleground states. How do you combat that perception . What are you doing to reassure people in your own party that you can actually win . Theres a deep concern about that. If it were short of money, because were raising a lot of money for the party, but if it were short of money for myself, i would put up my own money. Reporter how much would you put up . I would put up whatever i need to win. I wouldnt be that generous with it outside. Frankly, people have to contribute money, people have to endorse and really come through. I think the one thing theyre not doing is, ive had so many endorsements. I mean, darryl issa called yesterday and so many people have endorsed me. We have so many great endorsements. Nobody ever talks about that. The delegate s at the convention trying to overthrow i dont believe nah. I think thats the press. I dont think they can do it legally. I worked for one year and we won all of those delegates. Im at almost 1,600 15 to 1,600. And they said the most we could get was 1,200, we would be short of the magic number and i got close to 1,600, so we worked for a year. I compete alongside a couple of establishment people, beat them all, and now a couple want to come in through the back door. So i win 38 states and somebody else won none and theyre going to be the nominee . I dont think so. Reporter so two quick points to make there. Number one, this talk about the free the delegates movement. You can see trump at least publicly appears unphased, but it is still possible, its a so long hot, as weve been talking about, but it is possible, its not illegal for these delegates to try to make some moves in the rule committee, to make something happen, possibly, in cleveland. Number two, you talk about him saying he would fund his own campaign the a general election. That is something new we have heard from him. We followed up with a phone conversation after, in which he said it would cheaper for him to selffund. Less expensive for him to selffund. Which doesnt seem to make sense on its face. But he says hes raising a lot of money for the party. He says hes doing these fundraisers, but its for the party. Well, in real, some of the money is going to the Trump Campaign, as well. And some of the money that goes to the party can go to the campaign, although some is inaccessible. Hes holding a big fundraiser this week in new york. So well be keeping an eye on that. Nbcs al hallie jackson, thank you so much. Joe, does he need the party and can you explain what he was saying . Well, he needs the party. Republicans starter with such a disadvantage. Youve got to unite your entire party. Youve got to bring them all to the table. And then youve got to pick off independents and democrats because there are more democrats than there are republicans. Democrats have this blue wall theyve had for a very long time when it comes to electoral college. Republicans have to unite and then outperform to win. Thats why democrats have won five out of the last six president ial elections in the popular vote. I will say this, though. Mark halperin, donald trump, from that interview, the three minutes we heard right there, hes just not concerned. Whether hes not concerned, because he doesnt care whether he wins or loses, whether hes not concerned because he thinks, eh, ill just figure out a way to this is a guy right now, at least in that interview with hallie jackson, who just doesnt seem to care. Hes taken it all in stride. They cant stop me. Im going to win. Who cares . As i said before, doesnt seem to think he needs to change course. And ill say, we havent talked much about Hillary Clinton. Her team met all weekend, the senior staff is being extremely aggressive. They are not coasting. They are planning and scheming out how to game out the rest of the year. Pick a good running mate, have a Great Convention, find a way to prepare for the debates. And its been undercommented on, because trump has been dominating the news as he always does. Shes having about the best three weeks right now of her career as a president ial candidate. So that adds up to a lot of republican concern that trump doesnt seem to think he needs to change course. He acts like hes on track to win this. When theres not a lot of data that suggests currently, thats the case. So, nicole, Republican Leaders in utah are making appeals to donald trump, as a recent poll found him tied in that state with Hillary Clinton. Utah gave mitt romney his largest state margin of victory in 2012. It was the third best state for john mccain in 2008. And mika, again, we want to stop for people that are driving. The poll that were showing right now, the Salt Lake Tribune poll shows donald trump at 35 , Hillary Clinton at 35 . Donald trump is in a dead heat with a clinton in the state of utah. Mika, thats staggering. Over the weekend, utah gop chairman, james evans, went to trumps rally in las vegas, where the candidate promised him he would come and campaign after the convention. Will it make a difference . Nicole . This was the part of the country that was very much not available to trump during the primaries. This sort of romneys hardcore base. This was where when romney came out, he actually did have an impact. When romney came out and made his informertrump and i think it was first for cruz and then for kasich or the other way around. This was where it had an impact. These were voters that responded to romneys call. This is the conundrum, i guess, for republicans, that we could end up on defense, where republicans had to spend the last eight weeks on offense over that ig report into Hillary Clintons emails, over Foreign Policy record that obama and clinton, i think, even privately had expected to have to defend. Jobs numbers. Right, jobs numbers. The republican freakout has been maligned and mocked for much of the last 12 months, but it exists around these two central pillars, where we wish we could be on offense against a candidate we hoped would be vulnerable on her Foreign Policy record, on questions about the jobs picture, and on ongoing questions that still havent been answered about her email habits. Thats one place where the freakout is valid. The other place is that there is no campaign. The notion that i worked on three president ial campaigns. The rnc bolsters confidence and ill thes in. They do not run president ial campaigns. That is the thing to underline the most right there, mika. There is no campaign. You talk about to anybody close to the campaign, observed. The campaign, there is no president ial campaign right now. Theres infighting, theyre not hiring the people they need to hire, not spending the money they need to spend, theyre not building the Political Army on the ground they need to build. There is and again, this takes a year, a year and a half to do. Theyre just not doing it. Joe, what i dont understand, these are things we know. What would i mean, explain to me what you would do if you were in the Republican Leadership in this situation. Because what i see here, i just said the wizard of oz, literally, you have everybody running down the yellow brick road, and thats great, but when that curtain opens and nothings there, whats going to happen to these people that endorsed him . I would do what ive done my entire life, my entire public career, at least, when Newt Gingrich was falling out of line with conservative values, a small group of us stood up and said, enough. The emperor has no clothes and he was driven out of power, driven out of town. I remember back in 2012, during the convention, saying to republicans, mitt romney is in trouble. The campaign is in big trouble. They need to change track quickly, and you know, you can go back in. Its all over the internet. I got absolutely eviscerated and vilified for saying what everybody else was saying five months later. And so you speak truth to power and do it in realtime, if you actually want your party to win. You do it in realtime if you dont want Hillary Clinton to be the next nominee. I mean, the next president of the United States. You do it in realtime if you dont want the Supreme Court to be lost to liberals for a generation. You do it in realtime if you dont want to lose control of the United States senate. You do it in realtime if you dont want the house of representatives to move closer to nancy pelosi being speaker of the house again. Everybody, and ive seen it for 20 to 25 years. They keep their mouthings shut, they line up like lemmings, and then theyre all pushed off the side of the cliff. And then after the fact, they go, oh, gee, boy, this was so obvious six months ago. Too late. It is obvious. Guess what, this is right now, six months ago after the election. So if youre going to speak, speak up now or forever hold your peace. Because if youre an official in washington, d. C. , you know, donald trump doesnt have a campaign. You know theres infighting. You know hes not doing anything to beat Hillary Clinton in a constructive, professional way. You know that. You also do it now to find out if theres a shred of hope your candidate can pivot in the right direction on some fundamental issues. Mika, this is what ive been saying for weeks. This is to put pressure on donald trump, to stop acting this way. This is to put pressure on donald trump, to get outside help. This is to put pressure on donald trump to take back some of the bigoted, racist statements. This is to put pressure on donald trump to make him think why cant he do it . Whats wrong with him . Mark halperin, why wont they do it. Whats wrong with these people request. They are making some moves. Bloomberg politics is reporting this morning that theres a meeting today, a series of meetings, donald trump will meet with his top advisers, maybe some family members, to talk about the things that have gone wrong and maybe change course. Were kind of not talking about them, were talking about Republican Leadership and those who have endorsed them. But as tough as its been and as much unhaepsness as there is, if the campaign changes course, if they hire more people, if trump starts to talk about the economy and Hillary Clinton. Who did they hire . People the they hired a Rapid Response person, which is one of the anxieties, no one responds. If they do that, with a lot of republicans will feel comforted. Feel better. But only to the extent that he changes his images at some point. Thats what the meetings are about. Theres been at the highest levels of the campaign unhappiness with the things hes done thats been much discussed here, where hes simply creating problems for himself rather than focusing on Hillary Clinton. If you hire a Rapid Response team and donald trump doesnt listen to the things around him or the things he says are not being helpful or not good. And it is interesting, i find, that you talk about the meetings with the Hillary Clinton folks over the weekend, while shes celebrating the birth of her second congratulations to chelsea and mark. Congratulations to the family. But all of the angst that a lot of people felt that Hillary Clinton had so much tested and focus group ways of talking suddenly can look very thoughtful. And shes being very thoughtful right now, im told by people in the campaign. Shes considering, whats the message theyre going to send at the convention. How is she going to frame her historic candidacy. So harold in comparison to donald trump, whos shooting from the hip. Lets just step back for one moment. Donald trump gained traction amongst republicans years ago by questioning whether or not barack obama was born in the United States. He throughout this campaign suggested that he had no knowledge about what the kkk was really about. He attacked a disabled reporter. He took on john mccain. He talked about a muslim ban. He was attacked by the pope and attacked the pope. He talked about building a fence in mexico that would build. What about a Rapid Response team . What does a Rapid Response team help you do around these issues. I hear you. A straight jacket. No one responded to the clinton speech two thursdays ago. That was another level of freakout. Look, i understand the whole clinton concern, again, congratulations to the family, a new grandson, their first grandson. Congratulations to the president and mrs. Clinton on that and hau mark and chelsea, but what do you do to reset this . The republican establishment did not attack trump when he questioned whether or not barack obama was born in the u. S. We did not hear this outrage. So we have this guy now, and hes where he is, and i understand where paul is and i understand where mcconnell is and so forth. I dont. I understand where they are now, gosh, we cant be around this. But no one distanced themselves from this guy in a definitive way when they were making these comments early on. Now all of the outrage is here and i get it. As a democrat, taking out the partisan hat, i get why theres concern, but where was all this outrage when this guy was rising . Now hes where he is, and i guess i understand where hes coming from. Look, im the nominee. I won the votes, you guys should fall in line. If you dont fall in line, his argument is, you know, the partys going to explode anyway. Go ahead. Yeah, there was outrage. There wasnt enough outrage. There werent enough people saying that those remarks that harold brought up were disqualifying. They certainly were for me. I said it in realtime. I know the muslim ban, mika, you and i both horribly offended by the muslim ban. On the record. We can play the tape. On the record saying, this is what nazi germany looked like or germany look like in 1933. The david duke remarks, disqualifying. Said it in realtime. And mika, my question is harolds question, how are you, as paul ryan, or Mitch Mcconnell, or anybody else thats running the Republican Party, how do you move beyond this in years to come, with all the racist statements that have been made, adding the indiana judge to that, adding all the other things that have been added to that. How do you step away from that endorsement . There is a reason why. Mmhmm. I supported jeb bush. And then supported john kasich and said it on air, all the time, in realtime. Because harold asks a great question. How does he step away from all these racist remarks. How do you unring that bell. For a man, peaka, ymika, thad i have known for ten years, who has never uttered a racist word or offhanded comment in the decade that weve known him. And has actually done very kind things never even suggested it. Never came close to suggesting it. I disagree. That was definitely not evident at all in the donald trump that we knew. And you cant unring that bell. I dont understand, like, paul ryan is someone we saw in the future of republican politics adds a leader. He is going to always be the guy who endorsed racist statements, whether he endorsed them or not, because he endorsed donald trump. He cannot unring that bell, unless he chooses to right now he actually said, he actually said, mika, that a statement that donald trump made epitomized racism, and yes, im still supporting him, in the same sentence. Youve got to unring the bell, guy. I dont know how you get past that. Still ahead on morning joe, new terror arrests in europe as the cia warns about greater efforts from the Islamic State around the globe. Also ahead, will the renewed movement to stop trump be any better organized this time than it was during the primary . And who is actually behind the new delegates revolt against donald trump . It kind of depends on who you ask. Ed okeefe of the Washington Post and Jeremy Peters of New York Times join us with their latest reporting. Youre watching morning joe. Well be right back. Insurance coverage has expanded nationally and you may now be covered. Contact your health plan for the latest information. Now you have a couple of guys that were badly defeated, and theyre trying to organize maybe like a little bit of a delegate revolt, maybe. Now, number one, you know, reince priebus, you know what that is, right . Rnc. No, hes a good guy. And the Republican National committee, they put out a statement, you cant do it. Its not legal. Youre not allowed to do it. A new push to stop donald trump is gaining ground in the Republican Party. The anybody but Trump Movement wants to unbind the delegates for next months convention. Joining us now are two reporters who have been looking into this development. New york times reporter, Jeremy Peters, and Washington Post reporter, ed okeefe. Ed, what are you finding about this potential movement, because you suggest that it should be taken seriously . The reason it should be taken seriously, mika, after weeks of hearing from Party Leaders, pundits, former candidates, people who work for former candidates saying, weve got to do something, the only people who can actually do something are now doing something. And based on what they said last night, they now have hundreds of Convention Delegates and alternates onboard with this idea that you would get something passed in the rules committee of the convention, which will meet the week before things start in cleveland, to allow them to basically vote their conscience, vote however they want, and buck the results of their state caucus or primary if thats what they want to do. They insist repeatedly, and so far i have found no evidence that theyre working on behalf of nany of the other guys who ran. They say, simply, theyre concerned about donald trump. You know, for all the reasons you guys have been discussing this morning, and they want to do something about it, and they feel this is the way to do it. So Jeremy Peters, are the rnc why are they worried at this point . I would say worry might overstate it a little bit. I think that they are starting to Pay Attention to all this talk. Over the past couple of weeks, theres been a lot more noise about this. There was a prominent oped in the wall street journal. Theres been meetings among delegates in individual states, talking about how they can pull this off. But the problem is, it doesnt look like they could pull this off. Where this ultimately falls apart, in order to have a contested convention, you have to have contestants. There are no contestants. So they dump trump, what do they have . They have ted cruz. Do you think that really is going to excite a majority of the delegates . I dont. Good point, but dont you just need somebody to stand up there with a fake list of Supreme Court nominees . Seriously, these Republican Leaders will go for anything. Well, theres a real list. Theyre standing there with their tongues hanging out, saying, nominee, nominee, and theyll believe anything trump says, anything. Even though hes given them no right to believe anything he says. So why dont you get somebody else there to say to hold up a clipboard with a name of nominees. This is not going to be led by mitt romney or john kasich putting themselves forward. This is going to be a plea to open it up and let a thousand flowers bloom. The other appointment made at the end of last week was haley barbour. Haley barbour will have a role running the floor of the convention, not paul ryan. And haley barbour, i believe, is there in part because if thing does break open in some way, hes going to be able to have good relationships with a lot of people who will be stakeholders in this. This is not going to be a stoptrump and evaluate someone else movement. Its going to be throw it wide open. If it happens. Okay, joe . Well, you know, i think whats so interesting is, for me, the play here is the threat, and its much like, its again ripped out of ive been talking about the art of the deal for some time, its ripped out of Donald Trumps playbook. You threaten china with 40 there haves, when you know you will never put 40 tariffs on china. But you put the threat out there to make china renegotiate bad trade deals. The Republican Party, which has been onseqious and just helpless, and i will make no comments that will get me in trouble about their manliness, but i will say, though, there are so many things that they could do to push trump against the wall to make his life difficult. Nobody has done any of them. They could hold a press Conference Today to put him back on the heels, and to get a better deal from donald trump. To demand that he actually puts together an organization that could beat Hillary Clinton. That demands he actually bricks people onboard that have run president ial campaigns before and know how to beat Hillary Clinton. That could coordinate with senators, so the republicans dont lose the senate, so they dont lose the house, so they dont lose the Supreme Court. But they wont do it, because theyre scared. They wont do it i dont understand why. And ed, if i could ask you about this Legal Defense fund thats been set up, as well. Well, first, to joes point. Ive had several of these folks say, you know, if it does get opened up, and he wants to present a case that will prove that he will be a sufficiently conservative candidate, theyre happy to listen to it and acknowledge he may stale win, but they want to open it up and let those flowers win, because if somebody were to emerge, theyll rather go with that person. This Legal Defense fund, look, they dont that may be a more formal title than what it is. But what theyre beginning to see and worry about is the fact that many of these delegates are being threatened now by state Party Chairman and other prominent members of their state party saying, stop it, dont do any of this. I was sent one exchange thats in my story this morning between some iowa republicans, where one of the rnc members told one of the folks thats involved in this, youre embarrassing once youve got to stop this, to which the delegates said, thats exactly why im involved. Out in arizona, state appeared leaders say theyll strip you of the credential ifs you dare vote against trump, even though most of the delegation is stacked with cruz supporters and trump won. Down in north carolina, there have been examples of people suggesting that perhaps delegates should be fined and kicked out of the party for a certain period of time. So theyre trying to have a bank account ready, just in case some of these people either get threatened or Something Else happens. Thats the question. If they go down the path of republicans, and perhaps joe and ed and jeremy, jeremy had the best point of the morning, funniest line about contestants, how do you undo what has been done . If he won these primaries, how do you say now our delegates dont have to be with you, because if you do, it completely undermines a whole notion of a primary. We might as we end them. Thats exactly the problem. Any effort to undo whats been done in the primaries effectively nullifies 13 million votes. And the Republican Party is very sensitive about that. I assume you could have a you could read a lot of irony into that, that the party is saying, okay, weve got to fall in line behind this guy who has never really been a republican, and thats whats really upsetting, i think, to a lot of dyed in the wool republicans, who say, you know, were going to fall on our sword for this guy, who at every turn goes around and undercuts our leadership, embarrasses us and disparages us on national television. So thats, i think, ultimately what the party is worried about. The leadership of the rnc that im talking to, theyre not so worried about an open convention. Theyre not so worried about a rules fight. What theyre worried about is a messy Public Relations debacle in cleveland. Some kind of walkout or some kind of effort to stage a vote on the floor that ends up failing and making the party look like its ripping itself from limb to limb. I know we have to go, but it is important just to put this in the same conversation. That he has close to an 80 Approval Rating among republicans. Republican voters still like donald trump very much. Jeremy peters and ed okeefe, thank you so much. And we will have more morning joe in just a moment. We owe japan 1. 6 trillion. Now, think of that. Attorney general Loretta Lynch says the transcript will show some of the back and forth between mateen and hostage negotiators. You say partial. Whats being left out . What were not going to do is further proclaim this individuals pledges of allegiance to terrorist groups. So were not going to hear him talk about those things . Well hear him talk about some of those things, but were not going to hear him make his assertions of allegiance. This morning, were also learning the Global Security firm where mateen worked is facing more scrutiny. G4s says it made a clerical error in documents listing the doctor supposed to have signed off on mateens mental health. The psychologist named on a form submitted to the state when he was hired in 2007 tells nbc news she never administered a Key Mental Health evaluation, because she wasnt even practicing in florida at the time. The company now says a different vendor had actually carried out the evaluation. Isis, meanwhile, has released a new propaganda video, as the terror group has done following past shootings. The video shows a man speaking english, claiming to be an american. Joining us now from london, professor of Security Studies at the department of war studies at Kings College in london, peter newman. He serves as director of the International Center for the study of radicalization and will be testifying before the house of Representatives Foreign Affairs committee about isis online propaganda this thursday. Thank you very much, preempting your testimony a little bit. What can you tell us about what new we are learning about online radicalization, especially in light of orlando, in anything . Its not particularly new, because in america, the predominant pattern has been that the internet has been very, very important in getting people to radicalize and then to carry out lone wolf attacks. Thats different from europe, for example. Where you have these clusters and where facetoface interaction is a lot more important. So when it comes to u. S. Jihadists, the internet really is really important. And isis propaganda matters. So as we mentioned over the weekend, isis released a new propaganda video that encourages attacks around the world. The recent msnbc documentary, isis and the internet, delved into how technology changed the game for jihadist groups, specifically the Islamic State. There can. The internet and computer technology changed everything. Jihadist groups began to connect directly with their audience, with a increasingly polished videos they produced themselves. Fast forward to Islamic State, they went on steroids. They got the cgi, the professional editing equipment, the professional camera shots. Now jihadist groups are releasing evermore sophisticated videos, month after month. Their main goal recruitment. Pulling young people to their cause. Peter, doesnt this come down to the Tech Companies . Theres just only going to be more and more of this. And its working, right . I think the Tech Companies have some responsibility here, thats for sure. But one thing you cannot do is basically switch off the internet. The internet is there and isis has exploded it. It is reaching into the u. S. , for example, which used to be very difficult for jihadists to penetrate. The u. S. Is not so easy to get into anymore. And you dont have clusters of communities of very extremist people. So the only thing you have left, if youre isis, is the internet, and try to incite these lone wolves that are incredibly difficult to track. And to that point, ive talked talk ed to number of people who work in mosques, who are trying to work against radicalization. What they tell me, the major challenge they have and they believe the u. S. Government has is that if you get connected, if youre someone who is susceptible to radicalization and you get connected to someone in isis, they seem to be there for you 24 7. You wake up in the middle of the night and youre feeling angry and you go online, theyre there for you. And they say, we cant answer that. We arent there 24 7. So whats the answer . Well, thats true. And i think if you can accuse muslim communities of anything, its not that they are radicalizing people, its that in the past, they havent done enough to reach out to young people within their own communities. And they havent produced enough alternatives and interesting things for young people to get involved in. And if anything, that is their task now. And also to be present in places like the internet. A lot of muslim communities, not only in america, but also in europe, are quite old fashioned. They consist of first generation immigrations. Old people. And they are feeling uncomfortable with these new media. They have to be present there. And much more needs to be done. Professor, at the top of the United States government, in the state department, in the National Security council, there seems to be two schools of thought about how to attack this problem of recruitment on behalf of isis through the internet. One is to come up with an american version of propaganda to compete. The other school of thought seems to think that the way to compete against isiss internet propaganda is to find them, kill them, destroy them, crush them, take their territory from them. Which school do you think is more effective . Well, i have a third school here. I dont think the first school is particularly effective, because if the u. S. Government is speaking to people who are on the fence of joining isis, it has no affect whatsoever. I do think you need to find and capture and if necessary, kill people. Thats for sure. But when it comes to the internet, it is particularly important in which we are finding a way, instead of talking to young people as government, in which we can galvanize young people to do the jobs themselves. So imagine, for example, if youtube asked a question of the weak and one week the question would be, whats wrong with isis . I can guarantee you you would have 5,000 videos made by young people all across the country talking about what is wrong with isis. Of course, 80 of them would be rubbish, but 20 of them would be pretty good and maybe 2 of them would go viral. And that would be a lot more than the government has ever produced. So it is about galvanizing grassroots movements. Its not about talking to young people as government. Peter for being on the show morning. Still ahead, controversy in the golf world. And there was another sporting event yesterday besides my cavs. I like the hat. Its a little thing called the u. S. Open. 31yearold Dustin Johnson taking home the trophy at Oakmont Country Club for the first time in his career but there was controversy. He was assessed a onestroke penalty after the round because his ball appeared to move ever so slightly on the 5th hole. He was setting up for a sixfoot putt for par and then he was briefly grounding his club before the bizarre appearance and was originally told he was clear. An official approached him several holes later to tell him he might be penalized. Then hed have to play the final six holes with essentially this looming over his head. The possibility of the penalty consumed the remainder of the tournament as fellow golfers, including mcilroy and spieth chimed in on social media. Mcilroy said it was ridiculous. Spieth called it a joke. Johnson was ultimately penalized one stroke. It didnt affect the outcome. He shot a final round 69 for a threestroke win over the field. And the barnicles went crazy. The pga golfers who treated him on his behalf of right. The idea in a tournament of this importance they could not make that judgment right there, right then and instead such a head game golf allow him to play the rest of the day with that playing over him, stupid. Okay. Thanks, guys. Should we talk about the cavs . Yeah, we should. The other great sports event was david price throwing a huge game. Did i mention theres a huge group of cavaliers that are going to be at the airport . My sister and my brother. Were going to have fun in cleveland. Still to come on morning joe. We can whine about donald trump, whimper about donald trump or we can fight back. Me, im fighting back. Im fighting back. Bush, nicolle wallace, managing editor of ploom berg politics and cohost of with all due respect Mark Halperin, and msnbc political analyst and professor at the university of Michigan School of public policy, former democratic congressman harold ford jr. And, joe, if i didnt have nbc sports intern graham clemley trailing my daughter everywhere and in my life, i would not understand this cleveland thing, but i do. I have been given the speech. It was amazing. It was an amazing comeback for a team that hasnt that wasnt expected to win. Had the best player in the nba and yet he went down to miami and promised to bring a championship back to cleveland. Nobody thought lebron james could do it. He did and came up big near the end with an unbelievable block and then cleveland winning their first championship since i guess 64. Loserville no more. As somebody that grew up in atlanta, georgia, and understands what its like to be call loserville, usa, thats a heavy sports burden they gladly have lifted off them. Lets talk politics very quickly. For those who were hoping that there was going to be some turn around, some pivot for donald trump this weekend, i wrote it down, he talked about profiling mosques. Of course, he had been talking about a muslim registry. Hes even talked in the past about making muslims carry cards. Sounds a lot like nazi germany. Why dont you just put a patch right on their shoulder. And then started talking about getting guns in the hands of people in nightclubs at 2 00 a. M. A position so extreme that even the nra had to come out and call him out on that. This is there is no pivot, and it continues, and thats why the gop appears to be an open rebellion right now. It seems so. There was a cop in the nightclub. It did not really help the situation given the gun that he had. Donald trumps complaints about party unity come amid newly revealed plans to stop his nomination from delegates to next months convention. Antitrump delegates, many of them former ted cruz supporters hope to change party rules that would allow them to vote for whomever they want. The change would come in the rules committee chaired by enid mickelsen. Mickelsen has been critical of trump in recent weeks saying neither Hillary Clinton nor donald trump are going to be people that we point our children toward and say, i want you to be just like them when you grow up. Responding to the heightened speculation, the rnc Communications Director put out a statement. There is no organized effort, strategy or leader of this socalled movement. It is nothing more than a media creation and a series of tweets. Last night supporters in a Group Calling itself free the delegates claimed several hundred delegates are behind them and theyll raise money for a staff. On meet the press, House Speaker and Convention Chairman paul ryan addressed brewing signs of a rebellion while trump shared his thoughts on multiple platforms. Shouldnt delegates, if they have a if they are having Second Thoughts about it have an opportunity to express that Second Thought and let the will of the convention decide for sure that they want them . Thats not my place to decide. My place, because of again, this role i have which i feel has very important responsibilities is to call balls and strikes and just play it by the rules. So it is not my job to tell delegates what to do, what not to do or weigh in on things like that. They write the rules and make their decisions. All i want to make sure is its done above board, clearly, honestly and by the rules. I think well have a Great Convention and were going to go into a great victory. It would be nice if the republicans stuck together. I think because im a different kind of candidate and paul ryan said that. Im a different kind of candidate. I think i went either way. With them or without them . I do believe that. I obviously win the primaries without them. Im an outsider and won the primaries. I do believe that we can win either way but it would be nice if we stuck together. How would you like to have a party where myself and others traveled the country and worked for a long time. Now were shorter than i thought. I was supposed to maybe be able to pull it out at the convention and we pulled it out two months before the convention. And one of the people who probably hasnt quite given up yet, one of the people was trying to buy up all of the second ballot people, right . And i kept saying, let them have them because its expensive to get them. The largest audience in the history of cable television. Now i dont think it was for jeb, but maybe im wrong. By the way, jeb is working on the movement, just so you understand. I love competition like that. I love it. So look. Low energy. I didnt say it. You did. I get a kick when these poor, poor people that have been fighting me forever, they just dont understand they cant beat me. They just cant beat me. Now i hear, and well just finish off. S so i hear they want to do something at the convention. Wouldnt it be funny if trump gets recordsetting votes, unbelievable number of states and somebody that was beat like a donald trump says our nominee is first of all, its not legal. Cant do it. Second of all, the Republican National committee is with me 100 . Over the last week, donald Trump Campaigned in five states that have republicans in the Governors Mansion but not a single one appeared with him in public. Governor Brian Sandoval of nevada will not currently commit to voting for trump while Arizona Governor doug ducey and others attended prif eed privat fundraisers with him and none of the republican senators campaigned with him either although there was obvious capitol hill. Mark halperin, a lot of Republican Leaders feel like theyre in a terrible position right now and the move quietly grows to try to get donald trump pushed to the side. Its a long shot but whats it looking like right now . Its a fascinating moment in the history of trumps relationship with the Republican Party. The big turning point now is paul ryans interview as chuck todd illustrated this. The leaders of the party would prefer trump not be the nominee and theyre willing to have a messy convention if that can somehow happen. They dont want to be seen leading the movement. It will fail if its seen as elites trying to take the nomination away from them. Orchestrate grassroots, organic support. Trump is right. This is being orchestrated. But there is some grassroots support amongst some delegates to say we want to be able to vote our conscience. When paul ryan said, people need to be able to vote their conscience. Members of congress. Trump is right there are people plotting against him. I dont know that it will succeed but its a big moment. He has to work to unify it. As the list says, people are not out there backing him up right now. Nicolle, look at what donald trump said over the weekend. I dont think it would be that hard for him to actually throw water on this fire. Instead he just goes out to the garage, gets kerosene and starts dumping it on the flames. Talking again about a muslim not the muslim ban but profiling. A guy thats talked about a registry for muslims. He talked about people in the nightclub that were drinking. If theyd all been packing heat, there wouldnt have been as many killings. Taking positions so extreme that even wayne pierre has to come out and say no. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Thats dangerous. Hes not and listen to his speeches, hes still talking about polls and cable news ratings like hes running in an early republican primary state. Still doesnt get it. Yeah, i think this story, though, at this point, its never been about the elites so i think we should resist the temptation to make it about the elites. My sense is everyone is waiting for something that will never happen. Trump is waiting for respect he thinks he deserves for his stunning primary victory. Never going to happen. People are horrified by the racial undertones of his candidacy. The republican ruling class is waiting for him to stop cloaking his candidacy in demagoguery around racial issues and crazy statements like the ones you just listed. Never going to happen. People around trump and his deep inner circle are waiting for him to pick up a book and read it instead of reading twitter all night. Never going to happen. This campaign from now until election day is going to people are going to make their decision sort of in the context and in the climate of all of these standoffs. Theyll not end. As joe mentioned in the wake of the deaths of 49 people in an orlando nightclub, donald trump suggested profiling may be necessary going forward. You said you would check respectfully the mosques. How do you respectfully check a mosque . Do what they used to do in new york prior to this mayor dismantling. If you go to france right now, theyre doing it in france. In some instances, they are closing down mosques. Lightly profiling is something we have to start thinking about as a country and other countries do it. You look at israel and others, and they do it. And they do it successfully. And, you know, i hate the concept of profiling, but we have to start using common sense, and we have to start we have to use our heads. On the campaign trail, trump suggested what might have helped stop the shootings in orlando. Whats happened was an assault on our country. It was an assault on the gay community. Our whole theme is make America Great again. But ive ive revised it. Its make America Great again. Its make america safe again. Safe again. If you think orlando was the end of it with this weak atitude and this pathetic president that he have, it wasnt, folks. It wasnt. President obama is trying to make terrorism into guns. And its not guns, folks. It is not guns. It is not guns. This is terrorism. Nobody will protect your Second Amendment like Donald John Trump. Nobody. Nobody. If in that club you had some people, not a lot of people because you dont need a lot of people, but if you had somebody with a gun strapped on to their hip, somebody with a gun strapped on to their ankle and you had bullets going in the opposite direction, right at this animal who did this, you would have had a very, very different result, believe me, folks. Very different result. What donald trump has said is what the American People know is common sense. That if somebody had been there to stop this faster, fewer people would have died. Thats not controversial. Thats common sense. You dont like the idea of people going into nightclubs armed to the teeth. No one thinks people should go into a nightclub drinking and carrying fire arms. It also defies the law. I dont think you should have firearms where people are drinking but everybody, every american starts to needs to start having a security plan. We need to be able to protect ourselves because theyre coming. Note to donald trump and to that nra guy, according to police, an orlando officer was working extra duty at the pulse nightclub. There was someone there. There was someone there. So dont change the facts to back up your really bad points. The problem and engaged in a gun battle with the guy, omar mateen before the gunman went deeper into the club. Its so hard to watch donald trump because he could be doing so much with this. He could be doing so much with this. He could be doing so much better. Its an embarrassment every day. The embarrassment deep ens because he simply refuses to stop playing to the lowest common denominator. And that lowest common denominator over the weekend. Donald trump kept saying that people Drinking Alcohol in a nightclub at 2 00 a. M. Should have guns strapped to their waist and firing those weapons. He said it. Bullets, gunfight at the ok corral or at a nightclub where bullets are flying across the bar. Hes suggesting that people take guns strapped to their waist to nightclubs. Something that even the nra will not follow him down that dark rabbit hole. It seemed to have been. No, they didnt. They said nobody is suggesting that people Drinking Alcohol in nightclubs at 2 00 a. M. Should be carrying guns into that nightclub, mike. This is insanity. Well, joe, its a little more than inan ssanity. Donald trump is running for the presidency of the United States. The level of misinformation, innuendo, ignorance, rumor that comprise most of what he says and most of what he said over the weekend is staggering. It is staggering. And it lends credence to the fact that apparently there are a group of people, delegates perhaps trying to turn this nomination over before they get to cleveland. Its never happened before in the history of american politics in this country that you have this level of incomprehens confronting another candidate for presidency. Its amazing. Absolutely amazing. Mark halperin, where are we . What are we hearing inside the Trump Campaign and around the Trump Campaign . What ive heard is at least on my side, a lot of despondents of this guy cannot grow. Even people close to donald trump shocked that he has wasted the past five weeks the way he has and wasted another weekend with nonsense like this. Well, there are a lot of people indignant and are trying to figure out as nicolle suggested, things arent going to change. It would be effortless to Start Talking about the economy, changing washington, not getting on to these side areas, and people around him are amazed at how serene he is. I talked to someone who spent a fair amount of time with him last week who said hes doing what he always does. Hes on the plane, watching cable news. Asking people he should pick as his running mate. Theres no sense from him about urgency about changing course at a time when the polls, the fundraising, television advertise, the Political Support are not in his favor. But it would be very easy for him to change but theres no indication from anyone i talked to that he plans to change or thinks he needs to. Which mika just seems to answer the question that weve been asking for the past three weeks. Does Donald John Trump want to actually win . And all of the evidence, if you look at all the objective evidence on what is required to win a president ial race, the answer is no. He is going to turn the white house over to Hillary Clinton. Hes going to turn the United States Supreme Court over to Hillary Clinton. He can say what he wants but anybody that knows politics knows that this is the equivalent of a guy training for a marathon and five weeks before a marathon, all hes doing is sitting on his couch drinking beer, talking about how great a runner he is. Dont forget the senate, maybe the house, too. By the way, these republicans that are saying, you need to just blindly get behind him. They dont understand. Hes not only turning the white house over. Hes turning the Supreme Court for a generation, those of white house care about things like this and have been worried about things like this for decades know his actions today lead to a Supreme Court that liberals dominate for a generation. The senate endangered. You look at the numbers. Were starting to see that. And the house of representatives possibly also in danger. And were making a warning today, or at least i am, because its going to be too late too. And we were talking about this six weeks ago before he skidded into the ditches badly as he has. He doesnt have that much time to clean things up. And it just keeps getting worse every day. Nor do the leaders who are still endorsing him at this point. They dont have a lot of time to clean that up because what weve got here at the very least is their true colors are coming out. Those who we thought had convictions. Those who we thought were the great hope. Those who we thought would lead us into the future would show us our true colors, theyre fearful. Theyre scared to lose certain things in the short term in the long term. Theyre letting themselves down. Theyre letting down their constituents. Still ahead on morning joe, donald trump up and tweeting this morning. What he just posted to what we were discussing later, but hes not moving. A vote on brexit looms. Did David Cameron go too far as britain weighs their future . Wyle ta well talk about that. First, bill karins with a look at dangerously high heat. Not just that any more. Now fatalities along with it. A deadly heat wave. Arizona took the brunt of it yesterday. Numerous spots hit 120 degrees. Four heatrelated fatalities. Most were people in their 20s which are unusual. Usually work about the young and elderly. These people were hiking. They even brought water and were overwhelmed by the intense heat. 26 Million People under intense heat warnings. Tucson, phoenix, vegas, los angeles and yuma. The major heat dome, it was the middle of the country. Now situated over the west and eventually will move and weaken this week. This is the peak. Yesterday and today is the peak of the heat wave. Today easily 115 in big cities. Palm springs could be 123 degrees today. As far as the extended forecast, well cool you off in los angeles after 100degree heat today. Yuma will drop a little. Vegas, same with you. Its a very hot stretch. The other thing, typically a big deal. A Tropical Storm in the gulf of mexico. Right near mexico in tampico and veracr veracruz. Our fourth named storm already, danielle. Its causing very little, if any damage. For our friends in the ohio valley back through st. Louis and kansas city and even buffalo, syracuse and binghamton and pittsburgh, a chance of Severe Weather today. 28 Million People at risk of isolated strong storms with gusty winds. Other than that, just plain hot. St. Louis 99 today. Even washington, d. C. The sun is ablaze and the High Temperature will top out near 94. Youre watching morning joe. Well be rouight back. What are you doing . Getting faster. Huh . Detecting threats faster, responding faster, recovering faster. When your securitys built in not just bolted on, and you protect the data and not just the perimeter, you get faster. Wow, speed kills. Systems open to all, but closed to intruders. Growing fast, you say . We cant contain it any long. Oh you know, that reminds me of how geicos been the fastestgrowing auto insurer for over 10 years straight. Over ten years . Mhm, geicos the company your friends and neighbors trust. And deservedly so. Indeed. Geico. Expect great savings and a whole lot more. We want to keep our community safe. This is our community, this is where we live. We need to make sure that we have a beautiful place for our children to live. Together, were building a better california. So, Mark Halperin, we already have response from donald this morning on twitter, and it looks like hes trying to clarify a statement that weve been talking about this morning. Up early tweeting, by coincidence on the very topic weve been discussing which is his statement which is too much for even the nra about arming people. No, he doesnt watch so he couldnt be. He said when i said that if, within the orlando club, you had some people with guns, i was obviously talking about additional guards and employees and, therefore, he means not clubgoers but rather employees. So that would be a clarification about his position on who should be armed. Well, Mike Barnicle it certainly didnt sound that way when he was talking about people with guns strapped to their waist and legs. Whatever. But it does suggest several things, Mike Barnicle. One perhaps donald trump understands that he is continuing to overstep the boundaries, and he needs to pull back. But does he . Does he understand that . No. Hes trying to correct it, rectify it, amend it in a tweet. What he said is what he says. The results would be a lot different. Yeah it would be a lot different. Youd have more people dead. More people shot. More people hurt. Which is why the nra is even against it. Mika, i think something you brought up a long time ooh and i think even said it to donald several months ago after he did the aipac speech and used teleprompters, you were saying that instead of just winging it all the time it would be easier for him, better for him to read prepared speeches from teleprompters and protect himself from just winging it, making these statements that he could get by with in a primary campaign against a bunch of weak customers. But youll never get by that in a general election. I guess thats the thing that still gets him in trouble is the fact that hes still, as you said from the beginning, hes winging it. Hes making it up as he goes along. Instead of listening to corey and paul manafort. Instead of listening to the people surrounding him, trying to get their message to him, he just cant stay on message. Long before this time in the process, someone like donald trump would be not just talking to his team but talking to Foreign Policy leaders. Talking to former politicians, world leaders, reading, learning about how to couch certain statements and to be very careful about your words. And instead, he is literally still vomiting out anything he thinks at the tip of his head that he might have seen on tv and i dont know what channel recently. And its pathetic, number one. Its sad for the party. Its sad for the country. And its sad for his candidacy which could have done so much. And let me add to that, harold ford, its sad for the millions and millions of people that voted for him in the primary. I know they did it for many reasons, but partly they did it because they wanted to defeat Hillary Clinton. They wanted to stop liberals from taking over the Supreme Court for a generation. They wanted to keep control of the senate but mainly they wanted somebody in there that would fight for them. He cant fight for them if he loses 30 states. Look, i dont think theres any doubt about that. You made the point about some of the polling. Theres some polling that shows maybe hes chipping a little into Hillary Clintons lead. Although she still controls a commanding lead over him. I dont think hes going to listen to folks until hes absolutely forced to. He enjoys this. And he believes hes thriving on it. And until you show him something not you but others are able to demonstrate and prove to him in a sustained way you cant succeed going down this path, until crowds stop showing up and people stop clapping. Frankly, hes raising issues on peoples minds. Hes not raising things outside the mainstream. Hes talking about security, which is clearly on peoples minds and the kinds of things. I dont agree with his approach but hes talking about those things that frankly are conversations happening around dinner tables and kitchen tables around the country. Its going to be interesting if he takes the advice you laid out this morning or travel down this dangerous path. They think they have time. Theyve described this as a dead season before the conventions. They think they can reset this race they being the Trump Campaign. At the debates. What about the convention . Yeah, that, too. The opportunity to reset their numbers and their standing will come in the Convention Week and you have won campaigns when you do that . Those are big moments. If you fall too much behind. Too much damage has been done, joe. I just think, mika, that you see that guy on stage having a great time. Hes enjoying himself. This is a guy who is not focused on winning. Hes not. This is a guy focused on having a great time. This is a guy who is focused on fighting every single fight he can fight. This is not how a person who wants to get elected president acts. Coming up on morning joe, a changing of the guard at the indispensable mustread political email. Well be joined by the new authors of the political playbook. Where is governor jan . Where is governor jan . Where is she . Jan, stand up. Hello, jan. Thank you. And you know, its not nice to say about a woman, but you are tough, arent you, huh . She is tough. Shes smart. Shes a great governor, by the way. I hope you realize it, but she was a great governor. So i love you, too, darling. Look at you. Look at all these women for trump. So in the polls, im doing unbelievably, like almost recordset with men for trump, but i want women for trump. To hell with the men, right . I want women. And i think im doing very well with women. Wait, why is it bad to call a woman tough because i would consider that such a compliment. It is a its a perjorative the way some men think it. I mean, you are right but if you say about a guy hes tough, yeah, yeah, we like that. And if they say a woman, shes tough, they go, ooh, ooh. Oh, really . Thats the problem. I will tell you, im very tough and loving it. Were back with nicolle wallace, Mike Barnicle, Chris Jansing. And joining us now, washington correspondent for politico, anna palmer and jake sherman. Anna and shake are going to become familiar names in most of the d. C. Beltways as they will be the new authors of mike allens politico playbook early next month. Congratulations to you both. Thank you. Its going to be fun. I look forward to hearing from you both. Lets talk about politics of the day. We had paul ryan on meet the press pick apart his comments there. Absolutely. Whats really been interesting here is him kind of trying to be the Party Standard bearer. At the same time, almost releasing his members saying you have to do what you want to do. I think that dance that we are seeing him constantly doing, some of the other Party Leaders like Mitch Mcconnell in terms of trying to embrace trump when they can because he is the partys nominee but giving cover for those republicans who feel hes stepped too far right now. Donald trumps Upcoming Trip to capitol hill is july 7th, what can we expect from this . I dont think theres going to be a discussion of a private meeting with paul ryan at this point, which is notable. Theyve met a couple ever times and spoken on the phone but the two camps do not plan to get together. If you talk to very Senior Republicans on capitol hill, the number of seats theyre expecting to lose is going up. Ive heard estimates of 15 to 20. It would take 30 to lose the house, which would be a real wave. But there is beginning to be that concern which is pretty unbelievable considering republicans have the biggest majority since the days of herbert hoover. Is that hemorrhaging at this point . I think thats a good verb for whats happening. I want to ask you guys about stepping into mike allens shoes with this email. Mike allen covered the Bush White House where i worked. You think of washington and you think of covering washington, its mike allen. Is this a moment for you guys . I hope so. Absolutely. Mike has been an awesome mentor, friend, supporter over the years. A very close friend of mine. I went to politico at 22, 23 years old. I spent my professional life here and were honored to do this. Theres three of us. It will be it takes three people to fill mike allens shoes. Of course. Thats awesome. It does. And so were, you know, he built a great product and were looking to expand the community, the ecosystem of playbook which, just like morning joe, we try to bring our readers something new every morning. And we have a lot of crosssection between the morning joe viewership and playbook readers. Politico reported over the weekend that donald trump may have a price when it comes to leaving the president ial race. Whats the latest with that . Yeah, so my colleague had a story about some former aides and associates positting that 150 million might be Donald Trumps magic number. I think what this says and its interesting about this story is the fact that these are the people who know him best, and they think that he is so money driven that he actually could have a price tag instead of going for the president ial for the white house. So over the weekend, trump responded to that report. Take a look. I hear these like little rumors, and its mostly the press. See those guys . Thats the most dishonest group of human beings. One of these groups said today that donald trump, think of this. First of all, its illegal. The last thing id do donald trump may sell his campaign. May sell it. Think of it. May sell it. He wants 150 million. Can you believe this . Donald trump, number one, you cant do it. Number two, you can offer me five times that amount and i wouldnt do it. One of the people supposedly quoted, he might do it for 5 billion. Now for 5 billion, i guess we have to think about it, right . Mark halperin, its its funny and hes entertaining. I watched a lot of that was funny. He has to get every republican said the same thing. He has to get away from these sidebar things. He makes news and creates excitement. And its fun. At times. But they want him to talk about changing washington, Hillary Clintons record, the economy, jobs, the middle class. Not this stuff. When was the last time you heard him talk about the country . His speech the night the final night of the primaries. The night of the california primary. His speech that night was just, he read it off the teleprompter. A template for what people thought he was going to Start Talking about. You mentioned something or somebody here did about what he said at the vegas speech. Just a quote. This is not about wait. This is not about just us. Well have to get the tape. But its about africanamericans, too. I mean, lots of missed you have it, alex . Stand by. Well, look at this. If i stretch we might actually get that. I thought it would be too hard to find. So what we have it sort of like these offthecuff statements which we just saw which are funny. That was funny about the money. And it was a story that but heres one thats just on the i think on the cusp, if not more so, of troubling. Take a look. Its make america safe again. Safe again. Make america safe again. We want to do it for everybody. Not just us. We want to do it for everybody. We want to help africanamericans. Okay. So he went on to talk about africanamerican issues. Just Little Things that could turn into bigger things. Anna palmer and jake sherman, looking forward to your edition of playbook. Congratulations. Good luck. A pivotal week ahead for the uk as it prepares to vote on whether to leave the european union. Just to give you a sense of how this is being framed by some, british Prime Minister David Cameron who, of course, wants to remain in the eu, is being accused of using last weeks tragic murder of mp jo cox to promote his case. Yesterday he tweeted jo coxs strong voice in the campaign to remain in the eu will be badly missed. And he then linked a copy of her final article on the issue which was reprinted in the british papers this weekend. Meanwhile, new poll numbers on the brexit move. How are they affecting the Stock Exchange . A celebration around the world in the markets right now. Just look at uk stocks. They are leaping this morning. In fact, having their best day since back in february. Banks leading the charge. Why . You mentioned the polls. Two key polls out over the weekend giving a slight edge to those that favor remaining in the eu. And thats a bit of a change from what we were seeing last week. Instead of leaving the eu. Keep in mind it is very close. It is very tense, and it is very emotional, and why are in unchartered financial territory. So clearly the markets have been nervous. Last week was a down week for stocks. Worst for u. S. Stocks in seven weeks. And that is because this does affect the american economy, the uk is the fifth biggest economy in the world. We have a big trading relationship with them. And it is unclear as to what the spillover effects would be for europe and eu broadly. Politically and economically if britain does vote to leave. So that will be the key market event of the week. So far a lot of optimism and enthusiasm the british people will look. Well look at the polls leading up to that. The other story is apple. Telling Republican Leaders that it will not be supporting or backing financially the Republican Party convention this year in 2016. Why . They cited Donald Trumps controversial comments about women, immigrants and minorities. Its the latest and, yes, its the most powerful and biggest u. S. Company but the latest in a string of companies refusing to support the republican convention. Others include wells fargo, hewlettpackard, ford, motorola, u. P. S. , Jpmorgan Chase and walgreens. Some other tech giants like facebook, microsoft and google have committed to supporting the convention. For context, apple does have a history of supporting both parties. In the 2008 conventions gave about 140,000 worth of laptops to both parties. Unclear what they will, if anything, be providing to the democrats in philadelphia. Cnbcs sara eisen, thank you. Now to a story that epitomizes the ongoing problem of rape on college campuses.
