An apparent joke lead for frightening jokes for passenger. A man on board reportedly said i have ebola after she sneezed. Hazmat crews checked and eventually cleared the aircraft. Witnesses say the man who made the comment later said he was joking. No word whether hell be charged. In texas a sheriff deputy who displayed ebolalike symptoms tested negative for the virus. Hes been discharged from the hospital. Michael had got into the apartment where Thomas Eric Duncan was staying and duncan became ill. The first person to die of ebola in the u. S. He scummed to the virus wednesday in dallas. Lets go live to dallas and sara day lot of. Good morning. Theres a lot of questions about the care mr. Duncan received. Whether his life could have been extended or received if he would have been diagnosed earlier. What is the hospital saying . Good morning, jose. The hospital speaking out to this high level of scrutiny theyre undergoing right now as to the care of mr. Duncan. They released a statement yesterday saying that, quote, our care Team Provided mr. Duncan with the same highlevel of attention and care that would have been given to any patient regardless of nationality or ability to pay for care. End quote. Youll remember duncan initially came here to the emergency room on september 26th. He had a fever, abdominal pain and told the nurse he had been to africa. They choose to discharge him with antibiotics. He went home but came back in an ambulance two days later. His condition deteriorated from there. A lot of what ifs going on. What if the hospital admitted and performed the ebola test. Would have the outcome been different . The hospital says as to those questions that at the time on the 26th, his condition did not warrant admission and, quote, he was not exhibiting signs specific to ebola. In their statements yesterday they explained a little bit more as to why duncan didnt receive a blood serum from a surviving ebola patient. Specifically were talking about dr. Kent brantly who has given blood twice to treat the ebola patients flown back here to the u. S. It contains antibodies thought to help somebody fight the virus. They say dr. Sacra tells us he was asked if he would be willing to give blood to duncan. He said of course, however the hospital said in the statement yesterday unfortunately the two men were not a match and it was not possible to make that transfusion. Back to you, jose. Sara, thank you so much for that live report this morning from texas. Let me bring in democratic congressman adam schiff of california. What a pleasure to see you. Lets talk about the extra screenings at five extra u. S. Airports. Is it enough . Its a prudent step. I think we have to have some humility about what we know about the virus, when it gets to this point. We havent an had outbreak quite like this before. I think the steps make a lot of sense. I fly through one of the airports all the time. Im glad theyre taking the step. I think its very sensible. The house approved 750 million to bolster Ebola Response efforts. Its not being held up in the Senate Armed Services committee, james inhofe withholding approval of funds in his chamber. How critical are the funds . Theyre essential. It were going to take the steps we need take, if were going assist in containing the outbreak in africa. Thats the not only for africa but best for the United States and the rest of the world. If it really leaves that continent in a big way or leaves west africa, then weve got a fullscale problem on our hands. Its the humanitarian thing to do. Its the right thing to do. I think americans should be proud of our response were sending our troops there to help in times of need. We have a capacity and a logistical capability that no other nation does. Im proud of what were doing. I want to talk about the isis issue. Theres some kind of a side story going on that i want your thoughts on. Your republican colleague from california here congressman Duncan Hunter he learned isis fighters had been trying to had been caught trying to enter the u. S. From mexico. Homeland security secretary jay johnson said its not true. Listen to this. We have no credible specific intelligence to that effect. Lets not unduly create fear and anxiety in the American Public by passing on speculation and rumor. Congressman, what are you hearing about this . How real is it the threat . I think secretary johnson is right. Members of congress, all the administration, we need to be careful to present the facts to the american people. Not high besh lee. Theres enough concern about isis and ebola without hyping the threat. Theres been no evidence that there have been attempted infiltrations. The arrests are not of isis people. Thats right. Thats right. And, you know, both in terms of not overstating the threat from isis and the threat is real but its a measured threat. Were responding to it, i think, in a forceful way. Not overstating the considerable challenge of ebola. I think its important to make sure we have a prudent response, a passionate response. A strong. Lets talk about kobani maybe 40 of the city has fallen to isis fighters. It could fall to isis. What does it mean and what are the impact it is would have . It would be devastating, obviously, to all the people that live in kobani. Many which have fled and others that have remained behind. You could have a humanitarian catastrophe there if theres a significant number of civilians. I think most of the people are probably fighters and some people reluctant to leave home. And others cant because Turkey Closed the border. What is turkey doing or letting happen . Were talking about possibly ethnic cleansing in a city. Its excruciatingly frustrating and terrible catastrophe. If turkey wont intervene, and it hasnt, it ought to allow civilians to leave, allow kurdish fighters to enter the area. I find inexplicable. There are obviously political reasons visavis turkeys relationship with the kurds and the pkk. I understand that. But that has to be set aside at a time of crisis like this. Thank you for being with us. After being shot in the head by the taliban two years ago, yesterday for advocating education for girls, a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Sharing the prize with at the forefront of the Global Movement to end child slavery. The award will only give her more courage to keep fighting for girls education. She spoke at the u. N. At age 16. Now travels the world for her cause. Appropriately shes expected to speak next hour from a school in birmingham, england. Coming up the mystery deepens in north korea over the whereabouts of the young dictator. What king jong unhas many talking about today. Well have more on the battle against isis with a live report with Richard Engel. Are american air strikes doing enough to keep the terror group from taking a keep border town . Well ask him next. receptionist gunderman group. Gunderman group is growing. Getting in a groove. Growth is gratifying. Goal is to grow. Gotta get greater growth. I just talked to ups. They got expert advise, special discounts, new technologies. Like smart pick ups. Theyll only show up when you print a label and its automatic. We save time and money. Time . Money . Time and money. Awesome. Awesome awesome awesome awesome all awesome i love logistics. When folks think about wthey think salmon and energy. But the energy bp produces up here creates Something Else as well jobs all over america. Engineering and innovation jobs. Advanced Safety Systems technology. Shipping and manufacturing. Across the United States, bp supports more than a quarter million jobs. When we set up operation in one part of the country, people in other parts go to work. Thats not a coincidence. Its one more part of our commitment to america. Still more questions than answers this morning on what is going on with north Koreas Kim Jong un. For the first time in three years kim did not appear at the anniversary celebration for the founding of the ruling workers party. In fact, the dictator hasnt been seen in public in more than a month. Hes been seen walking with a limp and overweight. Sparking rumors about his health. North korean government isnt saying anything publicly about the dictators absence. Those massive protests on the streets of hong kong are far from over. Take a look at this huge crowds today gathered after government cancelled talks that had been scheduled for today. A number of protesters dwindled in the last couple of days but student leaders vowing to stay until the government responds to their demands in greater say in choosing the citys leaders. To the fight against isis. There are new reports isis is gaining more ground in syria in the strategic town of kobani. One Human Rights Group said isis controls at least 40 of kobani. Up from about a third just yesterday. Nbc chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel joins live in turkey near the board we are syria. Good morning, richard. We got information from the pentagon correspondent that things have ground to a stand still in kobani. What can you tell us about that . Reporter its unclear how long the fight is going last. The defenders of kobani think they can hold on for a few more days, a few more weeks, but the and they have been given some more breathing room by intensified u. S. Air strikes. There have been several dozen air strikes conducted b eed by u. S. Military around the edges of kobani. Its more difficult to isis to bring in the heavy weapons, artillery, weapons, and tanks and bring in more fighters. There are already some fighters from isis inside kobani. There havent been any Coalition Air strikes inside kobani because the u. S. Doesnt have the kind of cooperation and communications with the kurdish fighters in the city to provide that kind of close air support. The u. S. Wouldnt know who it would be attacking if it started to attack in the built up urban part of kobani itself. Thats where the fighting is most intense right now. And were hearing reports as well that the isis militants are advancing within the city. So yes, the air strikes have been helping. Theyve been helping around the edges of the city but not helping with the fighters who are inside kobani. And i heard you talking earlier to a guest. Its unclear how many civilians are still inside kobani. But the vast majority of civilians are weve been told, have left kobani. Its mostly fighters in the city. Several hundred fighters, perhaps a few thousand fighters according to turkish officials. U. S. Officials are saying they are confident it will not escalate into a cross border fight with turkey. Is there any sign turkey will do anything . Turkey has not intervened militarily to the great frustration of many kurds in this country. Turkey, about 25 of turkeys population is kurdish or people of kurdish nationality. Kobani is a kurdish city. Kurds here are watching their brothers across the border in syria being attacked and theyre watching the turkish army not reacting. Not doing anything with its tanks and troops. In some cases just a few hundred yards away. Its causing a lot of anger here, street protests, clashes more than 20 people dead in clashes over the last several days. Nbc Richard Engel in turkey, thank you so much for your time. Lets bring in Washington Post correspondent. Thank you for being with me. Secretary john kerry was asked about the deer or teriorating situation in kobani. Kobani is a tragedy. It represents the evil of isis. It is not the definition either of the strategy or of the full measure of what is happening with respect to isil. It is one town and there will be others where there will be conflicts with isil over the course of the next few months. What is he saying, ann . Hes saying that kobani may be sacrificed in essence. Im sure he would never put it in those terms. But the turks have not allowed the rest of the civilians to flee and the u. N. Estimates now there may be 500 or more civilians trapped in that kurdish down inside syria, but it is not what kerry was saying there. Its not a part of the strategic overall strategy for defeating isis. Of course, everyone would like to save civilians and would like to see the prevention of a militant take over of kobani, but what reading between the lines. What hes saying and what u. S. Officials are saying privately this isnt going to be the end, anything close to it, and the focus on kobani is not actually really giving a voice to the larger fight. Ann, u. N. Envoy said thousand of people will remain effected by this. Could be massacred the town falls. What happens if kobani falls . If kobani fall it is will be a major Public Relations victory for the Islamic State, and it really sets off an uncertain chain of events with regards to kurds and kurdish nationalism. You were talking with Richard Engel earlier about turkeys refusal to allow more civilians to flee or dissent its tanks or Ground Forces in. Its a short distance across the border, they could do so fairly easily as a technical matter. A they wont. They would like for the u. S. To agree to go after syrian president Bashar Al Assad who turkey detests. And the turkish president has said hes not going to do anything until he has the assuran assurance. That isnt only the Islamic State that u. S. War planes will target. But beneath that is the sub text if hes worried about an explosion of kurdish nationalism on his border. There are kurds inside his country and inside many others. He doesnt want this to become another kurdish uprising, which would be a problem for him. Yeah, ann, i want your reaction to the fact that isis is getting dangerously close to baghdad. It doesnt seem to be retreating pretty much anywhere. No. The Washington Post has a piece today about how the whole province is at risk. Its a gateway to baghdad and certainly a place that americans remember well from the iraq war. It would be another huge Public Relations victory for the Islamic State if it were to gain functional control of anbar. Thank you for being with me. I appreciate your comments and thoughts every day. The head of a major Mexican Drug Cartel that is also facing federal charges here in the United States is behind bars this morning. The viceroy captured by mexican authorities ran. He ran the cartel and oversaw a brutal cartel turf war that killed more than 8,000 people from 2009 to 2011. A down just across the Mexican Border from el paso, texas, he faces dozens of charges both in the United States and mexico. The arrest is a third major blow to the cartel world in the last six months. Joining me to talk about this someone who knows the cartels well. Former special agent in large of the houston dea office. Thank you for being with me, hal javi javier. Tell me what the arrest means for the drug wars in mexico. This arrests are major. Theyre major blows to the mexican cartels. Once you take off the heads they are not organized. As with if the person was in charge, you know, any organization the head guy has everything organized, the distribution, communications, transportation. Theres a lot of confusion, a lot of disarray. Weve seen major arrests in mexico. So thats creating a lot of havoc. A lot of confusion and a lot of disorganized. Its a lot easier when the guys are organized to move their dope. Yeah, and its interesting. Im thinking back on the major arrest, for example, some years ago. What happens when you get a big kingpin all of a sudden the violence could escalate for the short and medium term. Theyre trying to find who the new leader is. They kill each other off. Thats correct. We see it and, you know, we look at the columbian. They try to get into position. Thats where the turf wars come in. The violence come in. And remember this guy who were in charge. They had it down. The distribution, they had the corruption, they had the people that were paying off. So they had their routes very organized. Yes, we are going to be seeing a lot more smaller turf wars, a lot more violence because theyre trying to take over the command and control of this major organization. So this is our major, major blows and were seeing the results. There are a lot of people who think what does it matter to me . How does it affect americans . Well, it affect americans because of the dope coming across. We know the problems with the dope. We know the dangers. And also, very important, jose, the money being invested in the u. S. Is major. Ive seen them buy shopping malls, major restaurants, rattle real estate, even a wellknown pharmacy that was bought by the traffick traffickers money. Its safer to invest in the u. S. We have the economical problem with this Money Laundering going on. The main thing is the dope that comes over. Again, we know the dangers of it. And, you know, just to recap, i mean, the fact these drugs cartel exist on the border towns is precisely what theyre doing is giving American Drug consumers the product theyre requesting. Thats why these cartels exist and why theres so much violence in mexico and were seeing it come in across our border as well. Take a look at the map. Look at the drug cartels where theyre operating from and these are each one of these drug cartels the most organized, the most efficient, ruthless killers you could ever imagine. Hal javier, thank you. To my home state of florida and the heated race for governor where tonight former governor Charlie Crist and rick scott will face off in the first debate. It could be the most significant because it will be airing in spanish. Its expected to have the smallest audience of the three debates, its expected to have the biggest impact. These numbers show you why. Take a look at the size of the latino electorate in the Sunshine State compared to how tight the race is there. Debates in spanish are just one way politicians are trying to tap into the latino electorate. The electorate that is growing by the day considering by 2050 latinos will make up to close one in four americans. One of the latinos part of the grown is jacqueline now a Community Organizer for m mi famila. You finally got an opportunity to register to vote. How important is it to you . What does it mean do you . It means a lot to me for many years it has been a dream being able to vote, and now that i finally have the chance its amazing. I finally get to have my voice heard through the power of vote. I just cant wait. So Many Americans take vote for granting. Im tired, im not going to vote. Its important. Its very important. People have no idea how much it affects them in many ways. The people they elect theyre the ones that make our decisions that affect our daily lives with things such a our jobs, education most importantly, and a lot of people dont take that into consideration. They dont think that it is important to go out and vote when it really is. Let me ask you as a young lady who is brilliant. What are the things youre looking at when you vote . What are the things that hit your heart and make you choose what way to vote well, as a student, as a former student, because i recently graduated. Congratulations. Thank you. Education is very important. So all of the things that affect our education. As a student in college, i received a financial assistance. Thats very important. Also, all the things that affect our community, our safety. Give me some things youre worried about . Our safety in our communities, our children, making sure that we are able to live in our communities without being in fear. Thats definitely very important. What would you say to the folks who say, look at the states the latino communities that play a big part. We can keep going . What would you say to the people who take it for granted . I would say think of the people that wish they had that right. They wish they had it. For those that do, i mean, as a citizens you have that right to go out and vote why not take it and do something about it . It is your chance to do something to have your choice heard. That is the only way. Jacqueline, thank you so much for being with me. We appreciate you being on this morning. Thank you. All the best. Now to wall street. You were mentioning we had the worst day of the year yesterday but the day before on wednesday the dow had the best day of the year. I think the last time we had that happen was in 1987. We remember what happened in 1987 with the record black monday crash and the record 10 gain the next day. This triple digits move has a lot of speaklating what does it me speculating what it does it mean . Sometime it is means theres an imminent change of direction and people are trying to work out does it mean well have a proper correction. A 10 fall in the market from the high or more. 20 would be bare market. But 10 correction which we havent had in a long time. We have slowing growth in the economy.
