He suggested that the victim, the man he punched, might have been a terrorist with isis. Here is mcgraw. We dont know who he is. We know is not acting like an american. So he deserved it . Every bit of it. What was that . Yes, he deserved it. Next time we see him, we might have to kill him. You heard all that. 26yearold rakeem jones, here is how his friend, ronny rouse, described what happened at the rally earlier today on msnbc. They telling us to go, so we get up, and as we were getting up, you see the video, and im walking up, surrounded by sheriffs and i got hit, like, it just threw me off and next thing im on the ground. There is a report in the Washington Post, that the man, and im assuming raqqkeem, ex temded a middle finger. Yes, maam. Donald trump telling the crowd to go home to his mother. Rakeems mother died when he was 18 years old and he got a little emotional about that. Inbc Hallie Jackson with us, and robert costa writes for the Washington Post and msnbc political analyst. I want to go to hallie about this. What do we know about this . If you want to run through the incident as it went in series. What do we know happened here. With the bprotest incident, you had the protesters began to react, and you could hear it on the tape. He says go home to your meother if you look at the videotape, you see the person who is now arrested in this case, 78yearold man, essentially punch or appear to punch rakeem jones, the young man thats in that video you just played. At that point there are sheriffs nearby, the protesters are sort of escorted out. The arrest didnt happen until the next day, until after the actual incident occurred. And now are after seeing the fallout from this, chris. Youre seeing reaction from a lot of different corners, including Hillary Clinton, who tweeted out what she called this repugnant behavior at trump rallies, arguing the candidates need to be the one to set the tone for events like these. Now, in terms of trumps comments immediately before that, he was doing what he always does. Tell me if im wrong. He is often taunted people as theyve caused the disruption, the bouncers or the police, whatever, come and begin to escort them out. Its almost like a ritual, he taunts them on their way out, even to the point saying dont let them have their coat, its cold outside, let them freeze, is that what the situation seemed to be in that pattern . Yeah, it appeared to be that. Youve seen trump do this before, right. There was that moment last month, he talked about into the good old days, you take them out on a stretcher, punch them in the face, so you hear him talking about this when these protests happen. And remember, there are protests at every single one of his rallies. So this is not an unusual event for trump necessarily. What was unusual last night was obviously that it did turn violent. Have you been enough of the rallies where you can offer reporters estimate of the different kinds of reactions people have . I hear the crowds, im watching it here from the studio and sometimes people are yucking it up, but do you ever see the faces of people looking angry or out for violence . Do you sense there is real anger in the room, where there is kind of enjoyment of the moment . How would you describe the faces of people. This guy looked like he had a point of view, that he brought from that room with him. I dont think he thought of what he was going to do when he got there. He obviously who he was this guy, well find out about his mental state or history or whatever violence if he has any. Im asking do you have a sense of menace in the crowd. If you do, let me know. I would like to know. Yeah, you know, i think it depends on the night, chris. I dont think you can make a blanket statement about it. I think some rallies, youve seen tension, youve seen the sense that maybe something could happen. At others, its sort of a routine moment, where the protesters do their thing and get escorted out. The press reaction, thats another ritual. Hell turn around and talk about the cameras and the people in the moisturizerisers and they br and yell. You have the moments very frequently at trump events, i would say almost every time. Slate. Com counts at least ten physical altercations at trump rallies going back to this past october. His rallies of course can draw up to 30,000 supporters. This latest comes after two weeks trump said this. Were not allowed to punch back any more. I love the old days, you know what they used to do with guys like that at a place like this, they would be carried out on a stretcher, folks. I would like to punch him in the face, ill tell you. Robert costa, how do we get an objective reporter between that kind of talk and this kind of behavior. This has gone on, people say things on television that cause people to say things, and yet in audiences of 10,000 people, one person does it, and is there a cause and effect when its that level of incidence . Time and again, we havent seen much of a political cost whenever he makes these kind of provocations, his base and supporters embrace his lack of political correctness. A lot of working class voters, feel like the system, economy, whatever it is is rigged and on his side regardless of what he says. Its different from when i go to rural areas, where its more country club republicans. Those who are more conservative, working class, theyre all with him. Tell me about your scoop. I hear you have some news who is no longer on the list. Based on my reporting, ben carson, the conservative favorite who recently dropped out of the 2016 race, he is going to endorse trump tomorrow at maralago in south florida. They met today, confirmed by carsons Business Manager at maralago to huddle for an hour, and now carson is going to move toward the outside. Perhaps the biggest endorsement since Chris Christie backed him a few weeks ago. Before we go back to the topic right now, you now have Chris Christie and ben carson on trump side. Meanwhile, this other milieu of people meeting in florida with jeb. Are they going to be the opposition, those other candidates. Interesting Coalition Building going on here. Thats right. You have lot of highpowered donors. I was in park city this past week, now in florida, paul singer, the new york donor with rubio. Convening meetings and phone calls, trying to get some kind of revived efforts. Praising the way he is drawing out a lot of disengaged voters. Its interesting how the Republican Party is dividing down the trump and antitrump factions at the top among the various candidates and biggest donors. Hang in there. Hallie jackson just mentioned Hillary Clintons reaction came on last night. She kmencommented today that ai tonight on the Rachel Maddow show. Lets watch her comment about this crime perhaps. Lets watch. Clearly, i know that everybody in public life gets protested against and sometimes people do have to be removed. But it should be done in an appropriate manner. Other people in the audience should not be joining in. Mr. Trump should not be urging people on. This is deeply distressing. Michelle, im kind of amazed as you might have been by the calmness by which this guy was sucker punched, a high schoolyard, he was really punched, he took it and the way he has talked about it. His friend was with him to video it. They seem like they have it all figured out. What do you think of the incident itself . What does it say. The incident itself is absolutely horrifying, and im going to sort of paraphrase jorge ramos, but he is the journalist who had the scuffle with donald trump back in august. One of the statements he made is that donald trump is hatred and racism. No surprise if donald trump says he wished he could punch someone in the face in february. Its no surprise that the lowest of the low who are supporting his candidacy punched someone in the face in march, i think it would be pretty difficult to argue that there isnt some sort of a connection, when you have reporters who are latin decent being told to go back to your country or get out of my country or you have this man who sucker punched the africanamerican young male last night, saying you know, we dont know who he is. He could be isis, he could be a terrorist. What we do know is he isnt acting american it is a very, very scary time in our nation, and the fact that donald trump is garnering so much support, all over the country. I think it spells for a very difficult time in American History and a difficult time for the Republican Party. Does todays Republican Party want to be known as the party of donald trump, and you know, as jorge ramos said back in august, this is our country. It is not Donald Trumps country. Im with you on this. I just think its hard for me, you dont know about the personal motivation, well know more when this guy talks, but your assumption it had something to do with the race, the ethnicity, it wasnt that he was a protester. No, i think, i believe it was because he was black, it was because he saw this as someone who is not quoteunquote one of us. You know, being unpatriotic, whatever that means to him towards donald trump, and you know, and i want to go back to what bob said earlier. Its not just the sort of socioeconomic level that we saw him punch him in the face earlier today on another network, a person who was on the apprentice with donald trump, and i believe its being reported was once president of trump bro duproductions, went o television and thought it was delivered by a 78yearold, and basically, i believe, was quoted as something to the effect of these liberals dont have any respect for freedom of speech. You dont see people going out to a Hillary Clinton campaign and causing this kind of trouble. Its a problem. I think everybody saw what that was. That was a punch delivered directly to the face of somebody with tremendous hatred and anger, with anything you want to assume about it i think is fair at this point. Thank you, Hallie Jackson, great reporting as always about crowds getting a sense of them and a mix in the crowd for those there for the show and those with anger. Robert costa, thank you for the scoop about dr. Carson about to endorse donald trump. And michelle bernard, as always. Up until now, a big announcement to tell you, im excited to tell you Hillary Clinton will be joining me for an exclusive town hall this monday night at 7 00 eastern, an hour with hillary, a town hall with Hillary Clinton, right here on hardball, actually, 7 00 eastern, our time. Coming up, marco rubios last stand, he says he regrets the personal attacks, the personal stuff, below the belt, his children were embarrassed by it. He is headed into the debate to change the race ahead of tuesdays primary. But whats interesting to see, will they keep their gloves up tonight. Good luck to both of them. The sharp debate last night between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, clinton showed some authenticity, admitting she is not a natural politician like her husband or president obama. Can she turn it into a strength. Thats a great question. For all you diehard fans for house of cards, take a break from binge watching, weve actor Michael Kelly, and henchman, i hate to say, joining us tonight, let me finishing with the aspect of a trump rally. You cant trust him. Well, that was the worst of the worst, wasnt it. Welcome back to hardball. Two weeks, marco rubio has tried to out trump trump in the insult, the done rickles you might say, for younger people, insulting people. He has not been successful at the new trade. Inside rubios collapse, a fateful decision that helped unravel his campaign. According to the Washington Post story, a strategy designed to get under trumps skin enforced him on the defensive backfired on rubio and rally after rally, he was unintentionally character that he was drawing of him as little marco. Here is that failed strategy on display during a recent republican debate. Lets watch. Last night in the debate during one of the breaks, two of the breaks, he went backstage, he was having a meltdown. First, he had this little makeup thing applying, like makeup around his mustache, because one of those sweat mustaches. Then he asked for a fulllength mirror, i dont know why, because the podium goes up to here. Maybe to make sure his pants werent wet. I dont know. That was about as low as it got fortunately. Today, he won just two contests, minnesota and of course, pure puerto rico. It shows donald trump thumping him in florida. Thats rubios home state. Fox now has trump with 43 to rubios 20. Suffolk university has 36 to 27. Its trump 3831, so its mixed in there, all taken at different times. It adds up to about ten points. Joining me now is political analyst michael steele. Sir, thank you and curtis lee, political reporter for the los angeles times. What do you think of the guy that imitates his act but looks creepier. Stay with what you know. That was i think the fatal flaw with the rubio strategy. He didnt need to get into the gutter. He didnt need to go where trump was. All he needed to do was make the policy argument. We know he is strong on that. We know he has got the brainpower as well as the car r you never go where youre not comfortable or good. He was both of those things. He was not good at it and clearly uncomfortable with it after a while, particularly in the last debate. It just seems forced, and so he paid the ultimate price. I think it may have cost him the pathway to the nomination. Im sure comedians out here that write shows, they can figure out the difference between something funny and something that thumps on the floor. What do you make of this . Yeah, i mean, i was on the trail with rubio in february before he turned to this. I mean, most of the time he was talking about, you know, this future of america, this bright future, optimistic tone. That was his theme. He was hammering it home on the stump quite a bit. And it hit this panic mode and shifted its message quite a bit and started talking about spray tans and the his little hands. Lets go back to mike before we get in what rubio said himself. This idea of trump, you know, we watch nba or basketball game, thats hot right now, by the way, holy cross beat leighi. Its nice, you have to win the last ones. Let me ask you about this thing here about the old trick, you know, fouling in a basketball game. We watch it at the ends of the game. My favorite game is basketball. You want to get the ball back. Its a simple met you have to get the guy get his foul shot you win on the transaction. But you have to get the ball back. Is that what they told him, if you dont hit him on the inside, get the pub listy by going after him. It matters how you foul someone. You could fall in a way you get a technical or foul in a way where you get thrown out of the game. You have to be smart how you foul and thats that was clearly not the case here. They thought they saw an opening. And they played to that opening. They should have just stayed in the lane they were in, because the bigger argument, the better argument was about a brighter america. Donald trumps argument was we want to take america back, or we want to make it strong again. His argument was lets talk about a better america, and that was the one that ultimately was the winning point. And you know, again, we get out of your lane and start fouling, youre going to get out of the game. He was the positive, minorities, hispanics, black americans, problems in the 60s, ever since roosevelt and johnson, they dont want to seem to win that, and theyre not going to win it unless they try. Thats what rubio is, trying to be this transformational figure for the Republican Party. But it just hasnt correlated with the republican electorate. Its amazing guys when a politician, i talked to a guy who knows politics from the inside, hardly ever happens. Here he is regretting the way he tried to take trump down. Lets listen to a remarkable statement by a politician. Thats not something im entirely proud of. My kids were embarrassed by it, and i, you know, if i had to do it again, i wouldnt. Wow. They dont always do that. Not always, no, no. Alexander this could and it could be one of those things he is looking at his political future. If he doesnt win, its tough for him to continue on. He has to admit he shouldnt have gone below the belt. Will trump be graceful and say im glad youre laughing. Will trump be graceful. It will be interesting to see. Trump will certainly stand up there and say possibly the little marco and go after marco rubio, does he stand up to trump or remain president ial and hit on his record, what he did in florida and the state legislation. What he has done in the u. S. Senate. Does he talk about his record and focus on change back to this american future. And optimistic message. It will be interesting to see where he goes on that. Michael, so far only one candidate shoot to moon and do the positive stuff and thats john kasich. I dont think anybody else has done it lately. What do you think about the debate . Will trump be brutal on this guy now that he has him down. I dont think so. I dont think it works to trumps advantage to do that. He knows the math as well as rubio does at this point. Even with a win, he is still going to be in the better position to grab the nomination. So i think trump, his opportunity is to sort of look past rubio. He may take a zing or too at kasich, he may take one at cruz, but i dont think rubio is much in his sights as before. The point about the modesty and honesty that rubio showed, i wondered if he would have admitted if it worked. Its easier to come out i shouldnt have done that, after it failed miserably. So there is another side to that coin, if it had worked, i wonder what the conversation would be now. Yeah, people always, i hate to be mean about it, but people often admit, quote, bad judgment, after they get caught. Any way, thank you. When they dont get caught, they never said i was guilty. Let me tell you what i did that you didnt know about. Michael, and i are catholics, we know all this stuff too well. We know all about the guilt, baby. Thank you so much. Great to have you on out here with the los angeles times. Ill be back tonight at 11 00 eastern, so be sure to tune in. You dont have to watch the debate necessarily, because were going to go through it point by point. Up next, you dont have to watch it at all. Just watch us. Welcome back to hardball, after Bernie Sanders scored an upset win against Hillary Clinton in michigan, they met for their final scheduled debate last night. The two clashed on immigration, trade deals and clintons paid speeches to wall street banks. I think our best chance was in 2007, when ted kennedy led the charge on comprehensive immigration reform. I voted for that bill. Senator sanders voted against it. The great tragedies, human tragedies of recent years, is children came from honduras and i said welcome children into this country. She said send them back. I think its worth pointing out that the leaders of the fossil fuel industry, the coke brothers have just put up an ad praising senator sanders. When you get paid 225,000, that means the speech must have been an extraordinarily wonderful speech. I would think that a speech so great that you got paid so much money for your it, you would like to share it with the american people. A little sense of humor there. Going to the polls next week in florida, ohio, illinois, North Carolina and missouri, polls in several of those states show secretary clinton on solid ground. She leads sanders by 30 points down in florida. She has ahead nine points in ohio, and a commanding 42 point lead in her original home state of illinois, before she goes to arkansas. Howard fineman for the huffington post, eric mcpike, and ken for politico. I want to start with howard, my friend. As we say in baseball, throw it around the horn right now. All those states, what should Hillary Clinton be worried about for senator sanders. Ohio. Ohio. The one where it could be a contest, ohio is in many ways similar to michigan, where senator sanders pulled off that big, narrow, but big upset. I think there is some indication he closes in situations like that. And the message is that one michigan for him on trade, middle class economics, thats the core. The polls in michigan showed that eight out of nine or ten voters cared those things. Thats the strong message. Is he going to win the nomination, probably not. Is he allowed absolutely. You look good in the baseball cap. Her limitations a politician. Lets watch this. I have said before, and it wont surprise anybody to hear me say it. This is not easy for me. I am not a natural politician, in case you havent noticed, like my husband or president obama. So i have a view that i just have to do the best i can, get the results i can, make a difference in peoples lives, and hope that people see that im fighting for them and that i can improve conditions, economically and other ways that will benefit them and their family. Boy, erin, thats the opposite of how trump talks. He says hes the greatest on the planet, the most beautiful, everything he has ever done is wonderful, went to the best school, all that. Here is Hillary Clinton, with all the degrees in the world, including Yale Law School and wellsly and Everything Else in her background, she is saying im not very good at this. What do you make of it . A direct play for women voters. I perked up when i heard her say that. It was the most disarming thing she has said throughout this entire election cycle. Women relate to it. Its maybe were not as confident, though she should be, as our male counterparts. She has some nervousness, that she is not as i thought it was a great move. A more subtle play for women than she has been doing throughout the cycle. The women students get better grades than men but men raise their hands more often. Absolutely thats true. Thats what i think. Any way, let me go to ken on this. Hillary clinton, because you know, weve been through a lot of drama with Hillary Clinton, back you know, in New Hampshire back in 08 when issue was feeling bad about the campaign, she got beat in iowa and she showed, i dont know if it was tears, but certainly emotion. That was a voice. It works for a while. I dont know how it works in the long run. It may be a good counter balance with trump. It takes in in some ways, a weakness for her, she doesnt have this electric charisma. What i lack there, i make up for in hard work. Thats the way a lot of people, not just women, see themselves. People dont see themselves as a naturally talented, like a Michael Jordan type. They see like a steve kerr type to use the Chicago Bulls basketball analogy, and thats really a place where she can find her groove, and it is similar to what she did in 2008, going back to the debate where she said she sort of forced obama into saying that she is likeable enough by saying that it hurt her feelings, some of these polls that showed her to be not as likeable. Thats strong. Shes saying shes not good at it, they showed video of 1985, discussing cuba and ffide castro and the cuban revolution. Way back in, 1961, they invaded cuba, everyone was convinced that castro was the worst guy in the world, they forgot he educated the kids, gave them health care, totally transformed the society, you know, not to say that castro and cuba are perfect. Just because Ronald Reagan dislikes these people does not mean the people in the own nation feel the same way. In the past, he has visited cuba and he says america doesnt understand what is happening there and he calls it a cuban revolution in terms of values. Well, last night, senators didnt back away from his past comments. Here he is. Cuba is of course an a authority yan and i hope it becomes a democratic country. But on the other hand, it would be wrong not to state that in cuba, they have made some good advances in health care. They are sending doctors all over the world. They have made some progress in education. I think in that same interview, he praised what he called the revolution of values in kaub cuba, if the values are im prison people, kill people for expressing their opinions, expressing freedom of speech, that is not the kind of revolution of values that i ever want to see any where. Thats a hard one, howard. I mean, i dont want to go back to my views. Its not about my views, which is pretty much what they were, but here you are trying to defend anything about a dicta r dictatorship is tricky. Its marr its hard to do. You have to wonder. Whats the motivation. Bernie is bernie and he is stubborn and he sticks to his guns and thats why people like him. Look, the cuban vote in florida doesnt mean as much as it did. Most of the latinos in florida are not cuban any more. And theyre not democrats. A lot of them are republicans. But that said, i think bernie is on the wrong side of that one. You could tell in the audience, and i think hillary scored on that. Even as the politics have changed. Its hard to defend, its hard to say now many years later, of course, its authortative regime. I dont know its just cuba. Im not going to forget he aimed Nuclear Missiles at new york. Not triple a fire. Aimed at new york. For the purpose of counter balancing our threat to the soviet union. Right, and chris, also dont forget, in a state like florida, and in ohio and in illinois, the way the democratic vote is lining up, hill vary is appeali to older voters, and bernie is appealing to Younger Voters down the line. The millennials dont know anything about the history of cuba and think its cool to go to havana and see the old cars. The old voters remember the history youre talking about. The Younger Voters may not exist if it went the other way. Sticking with us, up next, people are going to tell me something i dont know. Youre watching hardball, the place for politics. Were back with the hardball round table. Tell me something i dont know. Billionaire paul singer who supports marco rubio is convening a meeting with other major donors just a couple of days after the florida primary. Theyre going to discuss the way forward, which if marco rubio loses in florida and john kasich loses in ohio, means that theyre going to be discussing whether to go in with trump, or whether to sit on the sidelines, which could be a huge, free pass for Hillary Clinton if theyre not spending money on ads attacking her. Wow. Lets go to erin. Erin mcpike. The 4. 3 active voters, 1 million have already voted. Also, marco rubios internal polling shows him within six points of trump. Closing fast there. Down in florida. Yes. Thats right. Yes. Wow. Howard . Well, chris, donald trump has a very interesting Controversial Campaign manager named Corey Lewandowski who was accused today of shoving a reporter from bright bar, leaving that aside, there are people, even within trumps own family, who are not fans of lewandowski, because he has a very short fuse, and has tried to keep everybody from direct contact with the boss, except him. Look for some more controversy coming out of the internal circle of donald trump over the next days and weeks. I think there is a call for you from him right now, howard. Just kidding.
