A spokesman for congressman doug collins tells the New York Times that he, even after the president s comments, still continues to support mueller testifying but no word from the others just yet. Democratic congressman david sisilene said that a tentative date of may 15th has been set for bob muellers testimony but in a tweet sunday afternoon he said he had misspoken. Quote, just to clarify, we are aiming to bring mueller in on the 15th but nothing has been agreed to yet. We hope the special counsel will agree to it. Sorry for the confusion. Now today is House Democrats latest deadline for attorney general william barr to deliver a copy of the full Mueller Report and its underlying evidence. Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, jerry nadler, warning that barr could soon be held in contempt. They told nadler they would not turn over documents and limit the scope of their request. They asked the Justice Department to reconsider allowing all members of congress to view a less redacted version of his report. In a letter to barr, nadler wrote, quote, the committee is prepared to make every realistic effort to reach an accommodation with the department. If the department persists in its refusal, the committee will move to contempt proceedings and seek further recourse. Nadler gave the department until 9 00 a. M. This morning to respond. Now suddenly this aboutface over the weekend. Ill tell you, julia, i spoke with Jared Kushner on the beat last week and he said he believes bob mueller will be completely forth coming especially on whether or not he believes the president committed objection of justice. I wonder if that is the thing. Seeing developments in terms of people House Democrats are trying to get to come to testify before their committees and i think thats making him nervous. The president realizes a lot of these different characters, whether its from various different parts of his life, his administration, coming to testify and wont necessarily make him look good. He is nervous about what could potentially come out, especially with this Mueller Probe. This aboutface comes as the president was tweeting various things including a retweet by Jerry Falwell jr. , suggesting he should get two more years in office because the Mueller Investigation stole those first two years. Were seeing different kinds of tweets from the president but clearly the Mueller Probe front and center on his mind and i think the president is very cognizant of all of this playing out in front of 2020. Its ironic that a lot of political observers keep slamming democrats from bringing up the Mueller Probe. However, the president is doing that ahead of 2020. It wont just damage democrats ahead of that race but the president as well. Hearing a lot of different things, as to how both sides can really proceed on this, but this is something thats playing front and center in the president s mind right now. Julie, democrats had been eyeing may 15th. Democratic caucus told me on the hill if they couldnt get may 15th and wanted mueller to testify before that committee before the end of the month. What do you see as the next steps for these lawmakers, not just on the issue of having mueller come and testify but all their investigations as they experience this unprecedented level of pushback from the Trump Administration . Jeff, from talking to different lawmakers and staffers on the hill, were hearing more talk of impeachment after Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a phone call with her members last week and essentially urged them to stay to the center and try to avoid impeachment as much as possible. A lot of democrats on the hill are seeing this constant pushback and the white house really fighting a lot of these subpoena requests and creating a long, drawnout, legal battle. A lot of democrats see the only path forward is possibly talking about impeachment. However, they take a very Major Political risk by going ahead with impeachment. What happens is while the president could easily be impeached in the house, it hits a dead end in the senate and ahead of an election, as i said before, this could make the democrats look a bit out of touch with the American People. The president fired off a pair of tweets yesterday, revealing that tariffs on 200 billion of goods will jump from 10 to 25 this friday. The move comes despite recent claims from both sides that talks were going well. The president threatened to impose a 25 tariff on another 235 billion worth of chinese goods, he says, shortly. If he follows through with that threat, nearly all goods imported from china to the u. S. Will face some sort of tariff. Given the president s wave of new threats, sources tell cnbc that china may back out of a final round of trade talks scheduled to take place in washington this week. Chris, this administration has been tougher on russia than any of its predecessor administrations. The administration thats been tougher on russia than any of its predecessors and yet you continue to be fixated on something that Robert Mueller wrote down. I struggle with that. Im not fixated with Robert Mueller. Im fixated on the conversation that the president had with putin and in the conversation he doesnt even mention not meddling in 2020. Over and over again, this president has refused to talk about election interference with putin, whether it was in helsinki or whether this conversation that putin smiled on. They werent on face time or skype it was a phone call. Proven by every intelligence agency, by an investigation thats been led by bob mueller for over two years that there was targeted election interference in the 2016 election and if this is not dealt with, it will very well happen again come 2020. Its as confusing as it is troubling. When you talk to people close to the president , they say the answer is simple. Questions about russian interference in the election call into question the legitimacy of President Trumps win. Thats why hes uncomfortable talking about it. Hence the reason that nancy pelosi says a democrat has to win in 2020 and by a land slide so that the president doesnt necessarily question the Election Results there. During his phone call with Vladimir Putin, he said he discussed the ongoing crisis in venezuela. I had a good conversation with president putin for probably over an hour. We talked about many things. Venezuela is one of the topics. He is not looking at all to get involved in venezuela, other than he would like to see something positive happen for venezuela. I feel the same way. We want to get some humanitarian aid. Just two days after President Trumps claim that russia isnt looking to get involved in venezuela, Foreign Ministers of those two countries came together. In fact, russia is economically invested in venezuela and has been throwing its support behind embattled president nicolas maduro. Mike pompeo was forced to clean up the president s remarks and his knowledge of the situation in venezuela. Does the president not realize what you have said publicly and what is obvious, that putin is deeply involved in venezuela . What does he mean when hes saying hes not looking to get involved . Are Congressional Republicans here on a different page from the president when it comes to venezuela and russia . Yeah. It seems like there say big gap between republicans in his administration as well as republicans on capitol hill. Youre seeing President Trump in his phone call with Vladimir Putin seemed to hint that they were on the same page in terms of venezuela. However, we know that russia has a very invested economic interest in venezuela and youre seeing that members of his own administration, such as secretary of state mike pompeo, seem to be harder on the russians, saying that no country should get involved. However, we see that Russian Foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov is telling media that President Trump didnt necessarily raise this concern with Vladimir Putin in his phone call. So, lots of differing statements coming out from the Trump Administration on this. It shows that President Trump isnt necessarily on the same page with republicans in his administration or on capitol hill on this issue. Julia, the Mueller Report, as we know, found no conspiracy between elements of the Trump Campaign and russia. And yet President Trump, as we saw, is still refusing to call out Vladimir Putin directly for russias election interference. What do you think that says about the relationship between these two men . Yeah. So, jeff, i think you hit the nail on the head on this one just a couple of minutes ago. I think the president , whenever he you know, whenever there is talk about russian interference in the election, he seems to take that personally. And he believes it calls into his election when in 2016 it kind of somehow makes it not somehow takes away the value of it, if you will. I think the president doesnt like to admit that russians meddled in the election. He seems to believe that doesnt take his election win true, if you will. So this is something that the president has continued to do over the past two years, you know, whether hes on stage with russian president Vladimir Putin, saying that he takes him at his word that he didnt meddle. However, i would say once again theres a big gulf between President Trump and republicans on this issue. Youve seen relationships and democrats on capitol hill call this a National Security issue. His own Intelligence Community calls this a National Security issue. However, the president seems to be taking more of a laidback approach when talking to Vladimir Putin. And it shows that they i just dont understand, really, that dynamic there in their relationship, the Trump Administration has been quite tough on russia, on other policies, whether it has to do with ukraine or other issues, circling Eastern European policy. However, on this issue of Russian Election meddling, President Trump himself cant really talk about it with Vladimir Putin, it seems. Julia manchester for us. Thank you, julia. Thank you. Democrats are beginning to voice their opinions about former Vice President s questioning of anita hill in the Justice Thomas 91 confirmation hearings. When asked if biden would pay a political price for her role shook her head in the negative and waved a hand dismissively. However in an interview with politico, lightfoot said, quote, i dont think anita hill needs his apology but given account of your behavior with a lot of hindsight, i dont know that hes successfully done that yet. Not sure that will happen. But were waiting for 9 00 to see what does happen. If congress proceeds with contempt proceedings, what does that look like for barr . It will be a challenge for congress to go for contempt, especially criminal contempt. When Congress Wants to hold somebody in criminal contempt they need the squuf branch, the doj to present that case to a grand jury and historically the executive branch in the last few decades has presented exactly zero of these to a grand jury when it involves potentially prosecuting members of the executive branch and that makes sense at least to the executive branch because they are the ones who refused to comply with the subpoena. Congress does have this subpoena power. But because its so dependent on the other branches to enforce it, it really ultimately is a paper tiger. Daniel, what do you make of President Trumps back and forth on all of this . One day he supports mueller testifying then he doesnt. Kind of reminds me of when the Mueller Investigation was ongoing and President Trump was, you know, going back and forth about whether he should testify himself to Robert Mueller or give that much anticipated in person interview which he never actually did. He said he was happy to talk to mueller and his lawyer said that would probably be a perjury trap and that trump couldnt be counted on to tell the truth. So it feels like, you know, President Trump is kind of making this is going to last longer unless they just let mueller testify and theres very little to stop him from actually doing that. Danny cevallos, theres obviously this strategy that the president is taking, that the white house is take which is stonewalling a lot of requests from Congressional Democrats for people to come and testify. That being bob mueller, the president coming out and saying he doesnt want bob mueller to testify. We heard about don mcgahn, the president doesnt want hip to testify as well. What can the white house do to keep these individuals from testifying . What authorities do they have to keep them from testifying, if any . They can assert executive privilege which has a checkered history when the white house asserts executive privilege. Historically, they force people like Harriet Myers to come in. They can ignore the subpoena but forced to come in. However, as to officials who have left the employ of the executive branch who are in private practice or no longer within the government it becomes a little more difficult and ultimately if Robert Mueller or any executive branch official has left they, that individual executive branch former official can come in and choose to testify and it becomes much more difficult for the president or the executive branch to prevent that. Do we have any idea, anybody, actually, do we have any idea if either bob mueller or don mcgahn have actually left and once again private citizens . Does anybody know mcgann is gone. Mueller, i believe, until the end of the month. Dan littman may know. Mueller is still a doj employee. We know don mcgahn is a private citizen because people send us spotted items of him around the jones day office. He went back to his old law firm. Its interesting.
