Been identified as 26yearold. All we know about him at this point comes from air force spoke woman. Court marshalled on 2012 on two charges of assaulting spouse and child. Confined for a year. Reduced in rank and given bad conduct discharge. Not a lot of information there. The trick of that information coming in slowly. I mentioned earlier, my colleague on the ground in southernland springs texas. The big question here is why. Why he would walk in and fire on 26 individuals, including children and kill them. A lot of people scratching their heads there. Youve been on the ground a couple of hours. What are you learning. The motivation is going to be central to the investigation. Let me set the scene. At an intersection where a lot unfolded. The wooden frame of the church. Police have cordened off the area. Going through the forensic evidence all around. 26 People Killed. 23 killed inside the church. Two bodies recovered outside the church. One died at the hospital. According to officials he began this rampage at the gas station. Parked vehicle and got out and walked across the street and began firing. One of the eyewitnesss who heard that barrage of gunfire. The ages and the personalities and the stories of the People Killed. Ages from 5 years old to 72. A guest pastor and his wife both killed according to son speaking to new york times. We also spoke to a grandmother who told us that four of her grandchildren as well were shot. One of them at least confirmed killed. I was is a heart breaking story unfolding here. You know everyone in the Community Knows somebody who attended this church. You were asking about the shooter and his motivations. Lets bring in nbc correspondent. Shes here as well on the ground following the very latest of the investigation. Marianna, what more can you tell us about the shooter. What we know is that this man is 26 years old. He was formerly part of the air force. He was discharged. There was a record of him having assaulted his wife, assaulted his wild. We also know he wasnt from Sutherland Springs. He was from a nearby county. The reason he walked from where you are now to this church behind me, First Baptist church and opened fire killing 26 people is still unknown. This church behind me is of course the scene of a deadliest mass shooting at a house of worship in the americas history. We go through this tick tok. Also important to know that the pastor at River Oaks Church is a few miles up the road. He was conducting his service when he heard about the shooting that had gone on in this church and he said they immediately came here and started to help. They became pretty much first responders. Also, we know that after the gunman opened fire here at First Baptist church, he was confronted right here in this area behind me by a local resident. A local resident that pretty much took his rifle and forced him to flee here to get in highs vehicle and drive a couple of miles up the road. We have that sound bite from this local resident, local hero and i want you to hear him describe what happened, that confrontation. Lets listen. I just did what i thought i needed to do. Which was they said theres a shooting. I pursued and i just did what i thought was the right thing. You know there were more weapons in that car. You possibly stopped him from killing other people. I didnt know that. Johnny longford. That is the name of the local hero who possibly saved many more lives. The gunman he drove off in his vehicle. Multiple weapons found there. That happened a couple miles from this crime scene where were standing now. Ayman, back to you. Thank you for that. We know he had more weapons. Certainly had tactical gear, ballistic vest. Indication he wanted the rampage to last as long as possible. Yasmin, back to you. A lot of people looking to the president for guidance who was overseas on the first leg of his trip. Calling it a quote, horrible act of evil. Our hearts are broken, but in dark times and these are dark times, such as these, americans do want they do best. We pull together. During a joint press conference, President Trump was asked what policies he might support in response to the shooting. Heres how he responded. I think Mental Health is the problem here. This was a very deranged individual. A lot of problems over a long period of time. We have a lot of Mental Health problems in our country as do other countries, but this isnt a guns situation. We could go into it. Its a little soon to go into it. Fortunately somebody had a gun shooting in the opposite direction or it would have been much worse. This is a Mental Health problem at the highest level. Its a very sad event. These are great people and a very, very sad event, but thats the way i view it. Officials say 23 people were deceased inside the church. Two found outside the church and one person died at the hospital. This is video from last weeks Church Service at First Baptist in Sutherland Springs texas. Among the victims were told is the pastors 14yearold daughter. Were told pastor frank and his wife were out of town at the time of the shooting. 20 others suffered minor to severe injuries there. Kind offerry to see the church before the shooting rampage was to take place. Among those in the hospital is fiveyearold ryeland ward. Now out of surgery. Shot five times. In stable condition. Officials say the gunman, 26yearold Devin Patrick kelly opened fire outside of the church around 11 20 a. M. Local time yesterday morning before continuing his shooting spree inside of the building. They say a local resident confronted kelly, grabbing a rifle and started firing at the suspect. Causing the gunman to drop his weapon and flee the scene in the vehicle. Officers pursued him. It is. Thats what driving investigators to this point have said nothing publically about this type of motive in the attack here. We know that theyve searched his car. We know theyve also searched kellys home. Thai also looking into online history and trying to piece together anything they can to help them understand how and why this happened. We also know that family members of the victims as well as so many in this Small Community of less than 500 continue to mourn their loss here. You cant find anyone here who doesnt know someone who was involved. Thats how small the community is. Many say they leave their doors unlocked at night. This is not the kind of place where anything like this would happen. Of course we hear that said over and over again in so many of these Mass Shootings. This investigation is being aided by federal agents on the ground as well at this point. As far as that motive is concerned, we do know there was no terror link here. Federal agents have made that very clear as they continue to look for answers. Ayman, when we interviewed a woman yesterday, she said we were going to have to sleep with shotguns next to us tonight because this is a community that is very scared and very on edge this evening after this mass shooting in our small town of 4 ourks or so people. 26 of those now dead. What more are you learning about this community in general and how the people are very much still on edge . You know its very antidotal, but some of the people weve been speaking to around this area have told us it is a community where everyone knows everyone. Everybody has somebody. As jay was saying, that is connected sod this church. We heard from one eyewitness that told us her first instinct was to immediately call some of her friends who she knew attended that church because that is the sense you get from everybody here. In fact, we have been profiling and asking a lot of questions about the gunman, what his motivations were, but its equally important as we begin to learn more about the identities of these victims of this because that is really where the heart break is to all the stories. You mentioned some of them ranges from five all the way to 72. Nonetheless, it is a community that is now grief stricken as a result of it. Another sign this community is so incredibly closeknit, when we were first interviewing people, a lot of the people saying they can only imagine the shooter is from outside of the town because they know everybody. No one in this town would do Something Like this. And that is exactly what happened. This shooter being from a couple of counties away, ill talk to you again in a little bit. Reporter it is very much focused on the man killing 26 people. Law enforcement, atf trying to piece together who the shooter was. Learning more about him. Right now we know hes former air force. He was dishonor bli discharged. Court marshalled they know in 2012. There was a case of Domestic Abuse against his wife and child at the time. They have record of him divorcing his wife in twl. They are talking to former girlfriends of devin kelly to get behind what would have driven him to committed this massacre. Our team reached out to two former alleged girlfriends of devin kelly. One of them, brittany, dated him when she was 13. He was 18 at the time. In retrospect, she said the age difference was a little big and quote weird at the time. She says that he started harassing her when they broke up. I want to quote this she told nbc news team on social media. There has been one point i called the police because he was just calling me so much that i wanted to report the harassment. We also reached out at nbc news to alleged abuse victim katie landry who also dated devin kelly and her public post about the suspected shooter said the following. I feel like devin has finally been exposed like i wanted, she says. He wasnt just shooter. He was abuser, assaulter, child abuser, stalker and straight up sick. Those are the words of a former girlfriend and abuse victim of devin. She finally said she met him at a Church Service and he was very religious, and, of course, he chose this church behind me the First Baptist church here in texas to commit this awful massacre. Ayman.
