Senator harris, im sorry senator harris we will let you all speak. Part of the issues of guys, you know what, america does not want to witness a food fight. They want to know how were going to put food on their table. This president walks around talking about and flouting his great economy, right . My great economy, my great economy. You ask him how are you measuring the greatness of this economy of yours and he talks about the stock market. Thats fine if you own stock. So many families in america do not. You ask him how are you measuring the greatness of this economy of yours, and they point to the jobless numbers and unemployment numbers. Yeah, people in america are working. Theyre working two and three jobs. When we talk about jobs, lets be real clear, in our america no one should have to work more than one job to have a roof over their head and foods on their table. And heres harris on the tragedy unfurling on the u. S. Border with mexico. A mother who pays a coyote to transport her child through their country of origin, through the entire country of mexico, facing unknown peril 20 come here, why would that mother do that . I will tell you, because she has decided for that child to remain where they are is worse. But what does donald trump do . He says go back to where you came from. That is not reflective of our america and our values, and its got to end. Another getting attention today. Harris on race. Were going to get to you. Hang on. I would like to speak on the issue of race. Theres not a black man i know, be he a relative, friend owe coworker who has not been the subject of some form of profiling are or discrimination. Growing up my sister and i had to deal with the neighbor whose parents said she couldnt play with us because we were black. That led directly to the moment thats been playing in a nearconstant loop. Harris taking on joe bidens suggestion hes been finding a way to work with two known segregationists during his time in the u. S. Senate. It was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputation of two United States senators who built they are reputations and career on segregation of race in this country, and it was not only that but you also worked with them to oppose bussing. There was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public school, and she was bussed to school every day. And that little girl was me. Now, Vice President biden disputes harris attack there and made it a point to address that moment at an event in chicago this afternoon. I heard and i listened to and i respect senator harris. But we all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on Campaign Debate exchange cant do justice do a lifetime commitment to civil rights. I want to be absolutely clear about my record position on racial justice, including bussing. I never, never, ever, ever opposed voluntary bussings. As a program that senator harris participated in continue it made a difference in her life. I did support federal action to address root causes of segregation in our schools and communities, including taking on the banks and redlining and trying to change the way in which neighborhoods were segregated. I have always been afraid of using federal authority to overcome stateinitiated segregation. That is where we start today with some of our most favorite reporters and friends, the rev al sharpton, host of politicsnation here on msnbc, Senior Adviser to moveon. Org, plus Msnbc National Affairs Analyst John Heilemann and editor and chief for huff post. I have been listening to you all week. I have been dieing to talk to you today im so sick of all of them. Shut up. You are the sthoehow today. I have nothing but time. I want to hear from both of you, not just the standoff with biden. That is not the sum total of what happened. And you and me, i, just talking about that is a disservice. Because they would explain bounce in the polls for her, which i would predict, but joe biden today taking another stab at putting this into context. I want you to speak to sort of the substance and the effort. I think that when you look at, first of all, the debate last night, i was sitting up front watching this. Joe biden said that he was supporting the local School Boards doing the decisions, not the federal government, which is tantamount to saying i support states rights. He said that. Thats not Kamala Harris confusing what he said. And if you need a day to explain that you are not with states rights, you only made the situation worse. Im talking about what he said out of his mouth, which was stunning to me. Give me the version for dummies for that. That has all sorts of problematic connotations. The problemic connotations she raised last night. When she said federal governor had to intervene, thats how we got the Voting Rights act and sif civil rights act. The only way the Civil Rights Movement operated towards any kind of achievement is the federal government had to protect them against states that would never outlaw segregation. Similar in the civil war if you didnt have a Strong National union, the Confederate States were involved. For him to say he supported the local School Boards making the decision is for him to say were going back to states rights and the federal government to not intervene. Thats a point, the federal government designated bussing. One of the points i think a lot of people miss is the civil rights leadership came out of the south. She and i are about nine years apart. We were both bussed in the north. A lot of people did not want to deal with the racism in the north 679 bussing in brooklyn or boston or berkeley where she was from because a traumatic experience. We were going into neighborhoods where we were called names and all of that. Thats what she was raising where we lived. Hes use to the Southern Civil rights leaders where you can play liberal when you visited down south but dont send your kid to my school when i get home, and thats what that was so reminiscent of when he said that and so painful. Like when i sat with him last saturday on my show in South Carolina and said dont you understand when you talk about boy and son, they would never call me son because they dont see me as part of their family. Boy when you raise that is not only what they call me and my daddy and grand dady, we were never able to be a man. I understand it but he wouldnt apologize. All he had to do is deal with the pain he caused. All of us have said things we shouldnt say. But when you dont feel like youre going to apologize, when you act like thats a bridge too far, were going to play politics with peoples real pain, thats where they end up in the situation he ended up in. I think Kamala Harris, not endorsing anybody, i think she really talked about the pain because a lot of us had to get on those Northern Buses and face hostility every day. I want to give her some more credit, which is when i was watching last night, i thought to myself that line from the wire, famous line people use a lot. When you come from the king, you bet not miss, and she didnt miss. She went for biden and she went in. The way that she did it was so masterful, was so surgical. And what she did was she used something thats incredibly important to him, which is his 40year record and then she leaned in on an issue thats really important to all of us, and that is the history of racial inequality. Especially in this election with donald trump. And what she did was weave in her personal story. And that is something that is purely masterful. And she executed that. It had so much impact for so many people. I have been watching these kind of focus groups not focus groups but debate watches, especially in South Carolina where people came out and said, look, that didnt happen to me but i can feel what shes saying. I know people who went through that. After she did that, the campaign, what did they do . They tweeted out a picture of a Kamala Harris in second grade basically during that time being bussed, and it was just really, i the picture is up on the screen. I have been in debate preps in the last cycle, i have worked on a couple president ial cycles, and its hard to have done what she managed to do. And you come out post debate and you look are you worse off or better off . Shes managed to be better off. So she used something personal and was able to tell a story, which is not easy to do, and she prosecuted her case to be president of the United States and take on trump come if shes the nominee. You got to give her and her Campaign Credit for that. Heilemann, are we making too much of one night . No. Maybe some. Look, i have been all over television saying i think she was clearly the winner of the two of days. She was the best performance of anybody in the measurable sense. I look at you walk in, youre trying to accomplish certain things, until you walk out the door. Theres one goal, to be the democratic nominee. Is she in a better position to be the nominee today than she was yesterday . She is manifestly. We will see what kind of bounce she gets or what kind of hit he takes. In either case shes done this thing, the mantra for the campaign, the frame for t. Im t it, im the best proser who can prosecute the case against donald trump. Shes on stage with sep gentleman narian white man. She wants to make people in the Democratic Party imagine what it would be like to see her on stage against donald trump. In that narrow since joe biden becomes the proxy for donald trump. She shows what its like, she shows and not tells. You had people all over social media and all over my inbox and Text Messages from democrats all over the place saying you saw that. I want that woman to go against donald trump. She will kick his butt, which is exactly the thing shes trying to engender. In a fun way way not only does she open up a big, wide seam for joe biden on issues of crime and issues of race, also she takes away if him that thing he has clung to, which is im the best one to take on donald trump. Shes saying no, no, look, im going to take you down to size, im going to make you accountable and show that im better at your game than you are. In what world is that not just an unequivocal win . And to your point finally, even if the biden thing hadnt happened, she scored every time she spoke. There was not a moment she missed. Every time she opened her mouth, she scored a direct hit on whatever she was trying to hit. She was humorous, funny, emotional. It was a sterling debate performance. I would add to that, that every time shes opened her mouth when a cameras been on her since she first mused about running thats been the case. Not just her prosecution of william barr, whos a million times smarter than donald trump, who she completely, completely took apart, one pleasant, polite question at a time, in the hallway ten minutes later she was just as effective and actually managed to squeeze another line of attack and another news cycle out of it. So the performance was not an outlier, it was an extension of every moment weve seen from her. I would say this, shes had weaker moments and shes had mistakes. She made mistakes on health care. Shes given speeches in places where ive heard from democrats who said they were unimpressed with her. They thought she was not as good as she was on her announcement speech. She had a moment for some number of months with some exception where she kind of hit a trough. I think it actually speaks to her quality as a candidate. All candidates who go on to be the nominee of their party, their capacitor growth, do they get better as they go along . What she did was she came out very strong, she kind of like fell into a bit of a trough where the exception of a couple Big Television moments on the hill. But the fact shes raised her game both in South Carolina where rev and i saw her last week, where she gave a great speech at the South Carolina convention, best speech i have seen her give from a stump perspective, to this debate which means she learning as a candidate and thats the most important quality maybe you can have if youre going the long haul in this game. The thing that she accomplished in my mind is combatting this idea of electability, right, and putting herself in position as president ial. The thing she did that was kind of amazing, she had a pen in her hand. Bring those bills and i will sign them on the resolute desk. There was an image of her just being fully in command. I think thats going to really stick with a lot of people. It was unmistakable this idea this is a leader who was ready to take on really big challenges. It was just a masterful performance. I was going to ask you about electability. I think these were not problems she had. They may have been questions the broader electorate, people who didnt watch her on the hill or sit glues to the barr hearings. These are questions she answered, electability, i think she answered hunger in the Democratic Party for generational change. She answered questions and hunger for a woman in that office. She answers the question and speaks to the issue of hunger for diversity. Shes the answer to almost every question i hear democrats asking. I think she also found a very deft way to deal with one of her vulnerabilities, which is her record in the prosecutors office. We wrote about things like truancy where you ended up with kids going into the Justice System for really no reason because of laws she prosecuted as attorney general of california. This has been a point of vulnerability with her. But by couching her own experience with race, and i think another place people overstated that vulnerability is they forget that africanamericans care a lot about crime because theyre disproportionately victims of crime. And a tough prosecutor whos seen as fair and competent who comes from that community actually does have a certain power and role to play. And its a complete inoculation from what we already know thats been telegraphed on the right, which is to paint the entire Democratic Party too far to the left. Just in the mind of ration people. And i think i totally agree with her, i think thats where they rob she robs them. You are talking about a lady that was a District Attorney and went on to be state attorney general. So you cant say shes soft on crime, and she was attacked a lot by the left. I mean, we questioned her on some cases so you cant say that. But when she talks about i was bussed and i went from and built a career, that answers a lot of the attacks on the left because some of them didnt even go that trajectory. But i think Something Else that was very interesting to me, voting into the hall last night, everyone was waiting for Bernie Sanders to do the attacking. And for her to be the one to take on biden, no one predicted that. No one saw that coming. And even as the night ended, bernie never stepped in the ring against biden. The only one that took him on and took him on in a very deft way as you say and a very surgical way was Kamala Harris. Who was going after biden . Nobody went but they have sharp and very savvy woman that took him on and took him down. And i think that was part of why he got a little rattled and didnt know how to answer because he went stage right without even thinking. I think he was ready for bernie. He was not ready for kamala, which has happened to too many women, especially black women. Theyre not ready for yall. I feel like theres a hat or Bumper Sticker in there for everyone to wear. Let me put the polls up. Another reason she had nothing to lose and everything to gain by going after the frontrunner. Kamala harris sat 7 . Joe biden is up at 32 . I dont think anyone is predicting she closes that gap with a single debate performance but she may very well have reshuffled the deck of this democratic primary. We have joe biden at 32 , still a commanding lead. Bernie sanders at 16 , Elizabeth Warren at 12, and Kamala Harris at 7 , and mayor Pete Buttigieg at 6. 6 . I wonder though if theres an open question or if you have seen enough to know the answer on whether biden can change . Well, i think, look, old dogs, new tricks. Hes been in politics a long time. I do think theres a reason why joe biden has done fewer Campaign Events than anybody else in the field. Theres a nervousness on his team about that because when he has been let out, let out to be freerange biden, hes made mistakes. We saw it happen on the hyde amendment. The only reason this became an issue is he made the mistake last week in the fundraiser. If he had not made the mistake, there would have been no way to get at him. Kamala might have found another way to attack him but these whole things, everything that came out of this was a selfinflicted wound. If he had not made the mistake last week, he wouldnt have had to answer it. Last night, he did days of debate prep with some of the best in the business, ron klain, anita dunn. People who have done debate cycle after cycle. There was nervousness coming out of the debate prep sessions. Yet this had to be something he was prepped for, and whether it was in the moment because he didnt anticipate it coming from harris or what, in the moment she prosecuted it and he could have deaden that thing with the right answer to her first question. He could have shut it down maybe with an apology or tamped it down. Instead he stumbled into it and gave her more opportunities to keep coming back. The performance mistakes are a huge problem for biden. Can he change . I dont want to foreclose the possibility but theres not been a sign of it yet that hes been able to make those changes. The record is pretty clear, right . This is a guy whos number for president a number of times. My colleague zack carter wrote a piece headlined joe biden is bad at politics and its just true. I would say in a somewhat more limited sense he seems to be really bad at winning primaries. When it came to the general election, i think he did a really good job in his debates both in 08 and 2012. But joe biden has an amazing, spectacular record at really flopping at running for president. Its extraordinary. Oh, goodness. All right. After the break, there were eight other democrats on the stage last night we didnt talk about yet. Mayor pete giving his campaign a boost with good, oldfashioned humility in another standout moment. And in a moment you could not fabricate in what would you do if you thought russia was a joke category, a lot of giggles. And bring your son to work day, donald trump posing with his not full security soninlaw. All of those stories coming up. Tremfya® can help adults with moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis get clearer. But it didnt save the life of eric logan. Until we move policing out from the shadows of systemic racism, whatever this particular incident teaches us, we will be left with the bigger problem of the fact theres a wall of mistrust. Mayor Pete Buttigieg standing out in a crowd again, this time for admitting shes come up short in addressing the tragedy back at home that resulted in the death of eric logan, the young africanamerican resident of south bend by one of its white police officers. Whether that is enough is up to the democratic primary voters but his performance was among the more noteworthy. Also grabbing heads lines today, donald trump who as our friend Ashley Parker writes in the Washington Post made a big comeback last night after being ghostlike during the first night of the debate. Ashley writes, quote, during the second night trump was the boogieman everyone named charlatan, fraud, hater of immigrants, separator of families, supporter of white sue pre supremacist and in the words of john hickenlooper, the worst president in american history. Joining us the aforementioned Ashley Parker. Ashley, its a great piece. Its a question we were all asking wednesday night. Its sort of one of the burning passions in the democratic base, the person who could best prosecute the case as we have been talking about against donald trump. Why didnt anyone remember him wednesday . That situation, dynamic very different last night. Take us through sort of the differences in what you think the president thought of each night. Well, the president claims he found each night boring. Im a little consisteskeptical. In talking to people in his orbit it has shaken up a little bit those who theyre more worried about, those who theyre paying attention to, which i can get to in a second. Basically the two nights illustrated perfectly in a literal split screen the debate thats currently royaling the Democratic Party, which is how do you handle a problem like donald trump . Because all of the polling shows and everything they hear from their voters is they want to choose the democrat who is the most electable against the president. Who can beat the president , who can defeat him. But theres sort of an open question what that electability means or looks like. Is it someone who goes after him and takes him on and aggressive towards him and prosecutes the case against him . Maybe. But theres also an argument you never win when you get in a fight with President Trump. The way youre more electable say if youre Elizabeth Warren, you outlay all of your plans and lay out a strong progressive vision of economic poupon popul you see those on display. Take me through what you thought about each of the performances. Basically what the trump thought first, talking to someone who said look, President Trumps nickname of sleepy joe is looking a steeping impression. Hes the one the trump orbit was most worried about early on. They said theyve been getting ahead to dismiss it but if youre a democratic voter and looking for electability, it wasnt just bidens lack of reresponse or bumbled response to harris attack but theres also the thought he couldnt go with enough stamina for trump for the entire election. The person who popped was warren. They think shes authentic, can give a good speech on the stump and that one of populism is one they think can hurt him and Kamala Harris is a very good prosecutor, but sort of a plaque woman and daughter of i believe indian and jamaican immigrant. She has the life story antithesis of President Trump and offers a strong contrast there. So i think both of those women speak to his psychological issues. Elizabeth warren is that human being who is smarter asleep on ambien than he is awake jacked up on coffee and Kamala Harris is just that woman he couldnt even get to look at her. Shes beautiful. Shes brilliant. Shes a badas. Shes stronger than him. Shes tougher than him. Shes smarter than him. Shes just the kind of woman that would never turn her head and even know who he was as sort of a sea level reality tv figure. You just laid it out really well. I accept everything Ashley Parker reports. And i totally get why those two women get under his skin. Those two women won the debate. Warren won the first one and kamala won the second one. It was really amazing to watch. You bring up really good points. Warren, we heard Donald Trumps campaign is really worried about warren because she brings that inclusive populism that, that when she talks about it, she talks about inequality, she goes to West Virginia and she sells it, she goes to ohio and she sells it. Shes in all of the early states. Shes passionate about it and can talk about it in her sleep. Thats amazing. Also the pocahontas thing, she survived it. Probably one of the first folks he attacked that has survived an attack from donald trump. That is one of the things shes with standing donald trump and thats also amazing to watch and that could for voters, that be could be something electability for them. With Kamala Harris when she first announced he had, what, 20,000 people. In oakland. I imagine him like up with the click click clicker, where is that rally . She said some tv term the size of her crowd. So last night on stage, thats what was so amazing about Kamala Harris, which is what you were talking about. It wasnt just that bussing moment, it was every moment. You saw her on stage and could you visualize her with donald trump and how she would take him down and do it very easily, in a smart way, surgical way as i mentioned, and execute it masterfully. One of the things thats so disappointing to me as a human is no one can prosecute the crimes against innocent humaninging based on this, i ka ul it toxic brew of trumps cruelty and just unbelievable incompetence. So you talked about immigration policies advanced by this president where the cruelty is the feature, not the buzz. And i think thats exactly right. I think if you look at whats happening, you look at babies and the youngest children dyeing on american soil in the custody of the u. S. Federal government, it is a crisis, its an emergency. I dont personally understand why people are not marching to these facilities and offering to help. She put into words the outrage and the to story, a mother who puts her baby on a bus in central america, to take that bus all the way through another country, mexico, im not even sure trump is the familiar with the map, to america, thats how bad it is. When he says sends them back, you have to think about how horrific it was to put your baby on a bus in the first place. And jeb bush said immigration is an act of love, has sort of defended the human beings coming here. All of the conversation seems to be wrapped around the intractable policies. Yes, whats the question . Why cant more people not just running for president adopt this language of really indicting the president s policies on a daytoday basis . Why in every news cycle is it impeach or not impeach . Why arent we having sharper policy debates in this country . I dont know i agree with the premise in the sense if you look back at the 2018 midterm cycle, which was an absolute devastating disaster for the republican party, and seen correct think as a referendum as the president s first two years in office, i think the question of kids in cages and migrant crisis in his early incarnation was horrific as it is now was a large important factor in turning off a lot of voters. I think the Democratic Party, we often in this bubble, we talk about impeachment, but not impeachment on the campaign trail where democrats won overwhelmingly they were making the he argument on economics, social policy, immigration. Health care. Health care, over and over every day. Maybe not with the poetry we like to see from west wing quality language but they were winning the argument and it showed at the ballot box in 2018. Now whoever the nominee is and candidates to get pretty good at putting together a very human and powerful narrative that will indict the president the same way it did on a smaller scale in 2018. I think those two candidates that ashley reports he is worried about do precisely that. And i think it speaks to some vulnerability who the Trump Campaign isnt even away. And i think whoever the nominee is, if theyre going to win, they have to learn to do that. They have to grow, not just talk about narrow washington policy debate but talk in human language that makes it emotional and makes the stakes clear at that level, not just what sometimes happens on the debate stage, it gets a little too washington for the way the voters understand it. The thing you pointed out when she talked about why would a mother do this, that frames it a total different way than how we have been hearing this. People are sitting at home saying why would a mother do this . Youre going to put your child on a bus and go through a strange land to a land, and when you get there, youre going to say go back . It makes our treatment even more and thats someone who will not fight on the fight plan he has, to use his premises, and hes definitely afraid of that with Elizabeth Warren because shes so smart, and hes afraid of Kamala Harris. Plus, we know he would do anything to is cape facing a prosecutor. And coming up, donald trump and Vladimir Putin sharing a knee and a chuckle about russian interference and fake news. Ake s thats why its on us. 2. Unlimited data. Use as much as you want, when you want. 3. No surprises on your bill. Taxes and fees included. Still think you have a better deal . Bring in your discount, and well match it. Thats right. Tmobile will match your discount. The moment some of us have been waiting two years for finally happened. Donald trump asked russian president Vladimir Putin not to interfere in our elections. But it was hardly the confrontation many of us hoped it would be. Did you tell russia not to interfere in the elections . Dont interfere in the elections. Dont meddle in the elections. That was the president of this country joking about the safety of our democracy. The Washington Post underscoring how concerning this is, writing this, quote, the meeting with putin appears likely to renew criticism in washington trump jeopardized National Security by not accepting and at times seeking to undermine the ample evidence that moscow conducted a serious effort to interfere in the u. S. President ial election in 2016 and bolster trumps campaign. The two leaders may already have another meeting to add to their calendars, both, quote, the Russian Media invited trump to moscow next year to celebrate the end of world war ii and attend a lavish military parade. And trump, quote, responded very positively. While the white house says currently trump has not confirmed participation. They probably would know after the Russian Media though, right, frank . Joining our conversation, former assistant director for counterintelligence at the fbi, frank figliuzzi. So every parent is trained in pattern recognition. Im sure thats a thing in Law Enforcement too. We once again learning more from russianstate media than u. S. Media about these interactions and future plans. What does that say . First, joking about our Election Security is even worse than not saying anything at all. He sent yet another message to adversaries that this is open season on the election. The other thing, nicolle, is were watching textbook bullying behavior. Why do i say that . While were all focused on his interactions with putin, lets not forget in the last 24 hours hes also once again tacked our allies. He views collaboration and friendliness as a weakness. Therefore, he thinks he has license to lash out and attack our allies. And that makes the world a less secure place. The flip side is who is he not attacking . Who is he aligning himself with . Our adversaries, murders, tyrants, dictators, even deferring and joking, smoking and joking as they say, with putin. What does that do . It makes the world a less secure, less stable place. And so all bets are off. Trumps behavior, aligning himself with bad guys, having us all call into doubt our collaboration and alliances around the world, people who are supposed to have our back, has caused us all to wonder about our security and the future. And thats on trump. So heres something that made me wonder about the security of journalists working all around the world. This is donald trump with our adversary, putin, talking about journalists. Lets watch. So if you were in your car, we put the words but and i will read them quick. Donald trump says to putin, fake news is a great term, isnt it . You dont have this problem in russia. We have that problem. You dont have that problem. And putin says, oh, yes, yes, we have it. We have it too. Its the same, and chuckles. Now, the murdered journalist in russia, right, you have been there heilemann. This idea trump thinks its a joke to covet, to crave, to harbor deep passions for the way Vladimir Putin treats journalists is chilling. Yes, the whole spectacle of this thing has been kind of chilling. You watch the body language and the wink and nudge kind of like everything weve seen here. Like theyre going to walk out and make out or something creepy. Touching his back. Honestly, i have seen melania swat his hand on a foreign trip to israel. I have never seen her let him touch her back the way hes touching putins back. Creepy. And i still believe if you read the Mueller Report and limits placed on mueller, i still believe we do not know fully we dont know the full story. Maybe eventually one day what is between trump and russia, theres things obviously mueller did not investigate and some of us thought or there are other investigations, we dont know. Even if you took all of that off the table and said theres no financial history, theres no compromise, nothing, all it is is watching the way trump behaves around thugs, dictators, autocrats, strong men, its the one consistency in his foreign policy. Put him in this place with putin and he acts like he wants to chummy up to this guy. The notion they have a common bond, i have no doubt if there were no legal constraints on donald trump that his behavior towards journalists in this country would not go quite as far as putins but im certain theres part of donald trump that would like to put journalists in jail on a regular basis. Lets not forget today is the anniversaries of the killing of five journalists in the capital city of annapolis, city i went to college. And violence that is not perpetrated by the president by any stretch of the imagination but were living in an atmosphere in the United States where journalists very much fear for their safety. Their physical safety and certainly online safety. The amount of time i spend protecting my reporters from trolls, from harassment. I have been doxed, ive gotten threatening phone calls and voice messages. Were living in a terrifying atmosphere. So seeing this kind of cozying up is truly shocking. And not just cozying up but actually saying out loud what we all suspect he thinks about journalists, that he wants to be more like puten who kills journalists. Trump also says the quiet part loud. Thats his m. O. I think we cannot miss the moment. You have him jokingly talking about how they dont have that problem in russia. And the way russians have on the record handled journalism to even make light of that, what are you saying . And like you envy that you cant just openly do that here. Just like on the day that we get this gerrymandering decision from the supreme court, he jokingly with a smile talks about dont interfere with our elections. And what i fear is if we dont stop and look at this for main and explain this to people, people are going to act like this is normal behavior. Who in a democracy jokes about playing with something as serious as hacking an election . Particularly when youve been accused of that. And who jokingly said i wish i was a dictator like you and we didnt have fake news. Thats basically what hes saying. He makes it act like this is normal banter is in itself a problem. Frank, i want to ask you to jump in on this conversation about journalists. I think that some of the publishers of some of the top papers in this country, i think ashleys paper been incredibly aggressive in the aftermath of the khashoggi slaughter and murder, drawing attention to the dangers that journalists face all over. I know the New York Times has gone in to see the president to talk about the dangers that journalists all over are facing and that his attacks dont help. Can you speak to any concerns you have from a Law Enforcement perspective about this rhetoric . Were slowly watching the erosion of the things that make us our own unique democracy. Our principles, our standards and certainly freedom of the press is among those. John mentioned we still dont know the real reason behind trumps motivation to align himself with people like putin. My thought is its almost worse if hes doing it for psychological reasons. I think he envies these dictators. One of the things he envies about dictatorships is they control the press. There are two things going on in the United States simultaneously with the press, one is we have trump bashing them and starting to erode freedom of the press and then we have the rise of what i call statesponsored media, which with outlets like fox. When those two things are going on simultaneously, we should be very concerned about the erosion of something that really is what our Founding Fathers thought we stood for. And i dont hear enough outrage about it, to be quite honest with you. After the break, look what donald trump brought to his official photoop with japanese leader shinzo abe. One soninlaw. That story next. Maria ramirez . Hi. Maria ramirez mom maria Maria Ramirez. Mcdonalds is committing 150 Million Dollars in tuition assistance, education, and career advising programs. Prof Maria Ramirez mom and dad Maria Ramirez to help more employees achieve their dreams. When a plan stops being a plan and gets set into motion. Todays merrill can help you get there with the people, tools, and personalized advice to help turn your ambitions into action. What would you like the power to do . What do all these people have in common, limu . Oug [ paper rustling ] exactly, nothing. Theyre completely different people, thats why they need customized Car Insurance from liberty mutual. Theyll only pay for what they need [ gargling ] [ coins hitting the desk ] yes, and they could save a ton. Youve done it again, limu. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. It looked to me like a scene like bring your kids or bring your son to work day. The same soninlaw trump ordered aides to give a security clearance to, notable given what we learned this week when trumps fired secretary of state rex tillerson. He told the secretary of Foreign Affairs committee specifically cutting tillerson out of the loop and making an end run. Frank, ashley and the table are back. Ashley, its still weird to see Jared Kushner on the world stage like he would be there if he were anything other than trumps daughters husband. Yeah. Whats striking about jared at this point is that first of all nobody has anything but an incredibly strong opinion about jared. This comes out any time you try to do any report in on him. He sort of viscerally polarizing in the president s orbit and in the white house. But because he has family, because he is ivankas husband, hes a survivor and he has favored status and sort of not unlike an octopus, he has tentacles everywhere. So he is playing the role of a sort of carl rove type on the campaign, signing off on most major decisions. He was just in bahrain working on middle east peace. He had a hand in the that the white house unveiled and he is now on this trip. Its not surprising that jared pops up everywhere, but it is a little confusing to people especially his critics what exactly he is doing and what his value at is. I always come back to the reporting in ashleys paper and others that cia flagged his background investigation. Its really hard to get cia flag. I mean, the fbi goes through and they bring certain things to the attention of the white house counsels office, and thats standard for lots of people, president , company, included. But it is not normal for the cia to flag like they did. Nothing is normal about this presidency. First of all bringing your son or daughterinlaw into the presidency and giving them Senior Adviser titles and giving just jared in particular such a large portfolio. I mean, we learned that he was doing diplomacy via tillerson this week. It is the most bizarre thing and dangerous. This is dangerous. This is our National Security that were talking about. And, you know, i just its almost like how do you stop the madness. How does it end. Can it please end. Because one day were going to walk in, jared himself is probably going to walk into a situation that is going to take all of us in, and how do we get out of there that will be dangerous. Frank, its also been reported that jared communicates via whatsapp and other encrypting apps with world leaders. The cia flagged his background check. Are there ongoing concerns from your perspective . Well, we could spend an hour talking about unsecure coms which this white house is rife within simply refusing and thumbing their nose at standard protocols to use especially encrypted very hard to break enviption for coms. But with regard to the role of kushner and other family members, look, weve got amateurs increasingly running our foreign policy. If you and i were to concern with a surgeon about some relatively simple surgery, we might ask them how many times have you done this, whats your success rate, how many years have you been boardcertified . Weve got rookies. Weve got people who havent even had the medical School Education equivalent of foreign policy. And they are alone running our things. And theres increasing numbers of acting directors and cabinet secretaries come and go and no ones in charge. We are left with Jared Kushner trying to figure it out. That makes the world also increasingly unstable. Frank, ashley, were grateful to both of you for joining us. Thank you so much. We are going to sneak in a break. Dont go anywhere. We will be right back. Right ba. Oh, hey jeff, im a car thief. What . im here to steal your car because, well, thats my job. What . What . . What . laughing what . . What . what . Were back with something we usually dont have, an extra minute. Jimmy carter today basically called donald trump an illegitimate president. How long till he tweets a response . Seriously, its the one thing we havent really seen. Has trump taken on, since hes been president like former president s . Well, hes taken on obama. Hes taken on bill clinton.
