Three were americans from a prominent boston family. One was a british israeli citizen. At least six others were injured. The two alleged suspects who were killed with authorities were from East Jerusalem. Within hours, hundreds of mourners went to his funeral. President obama interrupted a meeting on ebola to speak out. Obviously we condemn in the strongest terms these attacks. A number of people were wound and four people were killed including three american citizens. This is a tragedy for both nations, israel as well as the United States and our hearts go out to the families who obviously are undergoing enormous grief right now. Joining me is nbcs martin fletcher. Martin, first to you. You are a veteran from this area, but having watched the cabinet over the years, i think the first actions are to destroy the homes of the two suspects. What will happen next. All the fears are there. Thats right, andrea. Those are the fears. The question is whether its overblown or not. They are blowing up the homes of the people who did it. Punishment of the family. Israel is found to be effective because when there is no real sanction against the family, the people who carry out the attacks celebrated as martyrs. They are honored in the community and the family is also there. This is one way they wondered by blowing up the homes of the families. There will be more tough measures, but we have the context of being tough in jerusalem. For the last few weeks, there is this wave of violence, five israelis are being killed. About a dozen palestinians are being killed. There is a growing impetus towards violence and the question is what everybody is afraid of. First we have to define what it is. If its a widespread revolt across all palestinians against israel, this doesnt have the coloring of that. Its so far mostly limited to jerusalem which has been a very scary place for jews. The back story for this is also of course israels decisions on settlements in East Jerusalem. Going back further, it is the coalition, the coalition with hamas that is really objected to so forcefully. The leadership that they have been dealing with decided to do the joint government for a lot of other reasons for hamas. Hamas is celebrating and handing out candy. The leaders statement is claiming that this is a great moment. How does the leadership get around that . Thats a very tricky question obviously. The Palestinian Authority president put out a statement condemning it and obviously is the chairman of the Palestinian Authority. He has the authority to speak on behalf of the people, however as you mentioned, the faxes including Islamic Jihad welcomed this attack saying that they are calling it a revenge or response to what is happening in jerusalem over the past several weeks and called for further similar attacks to be carried out in defense of israeli violatio violations. In the cycle of violence, there were points of departure. You can look at it over the past 24 hours to the past six or seven months. The government has been upset about the Coalition Agreement or the government that has been formed involving the two major factions. None the less they occupied East Jerusalem and elsewhere. More importantly they angered this country. The United States repeatedly called on israel not to do so because of the escalation we have seen over the past several weeks including the restrictions that have been placed on palestinians trying to access the sanctuary. They called the temple mount in East Jerusalem. From an american perspective, despite the horrible events in gaza over the summer, the beheadings have taken American Media attention off of them. Does that hamper the political clout, if you will, of netanyahu in terms of reaching out for american support . It definitely muddies the issue. Israel and the palestinians need this commitment to encourage them if not to use the word forcing them to make progress. Towards a peace process. It is clear that whats happening in syria with isis or isil is welcomed by israel, but used to make the point, look, what is happening in israel with the palestinians needs solving, but its a drop in the ocean compared to the sea of violence in other parts of the mideast. They keep asking why is this such an emphasis on what they consider a small local issue of israeli struggle. When there is such a violence and threat of islamic violence and moving towards the United States and canada and britain and europe. The israelis look at whats happening and point out that this is a much bigger issue than the Israeli Palestinian problem. Of course this violence that broke out today, its always an intricator. It always happens with how serious and urgent it is to solve them. I believe it was really important to point out that although we talk about different points of departure, what caused this outbreak, it does need to be seen in the overall context of the ongoing struggle between the palestinians and israel. Gaza has been long calling for the west bank to carry out what they call operations against israel. Its another one of the operations. Fear. There is already strong objections to abbass statement because it recapitulates all of them. Many of them legitimate, but instead of saying we condemn this horrible attack, they go over the arguments against israel. Yeah. Its exactly what martin was saying. The israelipalestinian remains a central point. When the issue of jerusalem comes up and goes back to whether this could be a third palestinian up rising as it is referred to, what is unique about this is its now happening in jerusalem. Most of the up risings when they have a street level support, they didnt sustain those types of protests and demonstrations if they are not happening in jerusalem. The question is going to be whether or not there is sustainability in these types of clashes and further attacks. That will be troubling for government officials and palestinians and particularly for americans trying to narrow the divide. Exactly. Thank you so much. Thats not an option and i do get a little worried that advocates of Immigration Reform start losing heart and immediately think well, somehow there is an out here. If congress doesnt act, we will have the president sign something and that will take care of them. What he said just a year ago is if we start broadening that essentially i would be ignoring the law. That would be difficult to defend legally. Whats changed . He was expressing in that interview his preference that Congress Take action. We all understand that the way to fix this is for congress to do its job. He has the authority to take action and establish enforcement priorities. He asked for recommendations on what he can do to fix whats broken. He has been clear that his authority does not match what congress has the authority to do. The actions he takes will not compare to what the senate did 16 months ago. He wants congress to act and he will do what he can within the constraints of the law to fix what he can about whats broken. How soon is this going to happen . He is making decisions about timing as well as content. When he is ready to make an announcement, we will let you know. Is it 3. 3 Million People and expanding it to people here five years. I will let the president make his own announcement. Its a bad idea to get out in front of what hes going to say. What i will say is he asked his team to prepare what he can do. At the same time you are facing the possibility of new sanctions from the europeans who believe hamas is not a Terror Organization. They say it is. What is the end of this cycle. You are not going to get the state and you will get our support is if you make peace with them. The problem we have is the issue of poisoning a generation of palestinians through staterun media and schools and through newspapers that are controlled by the Palestinian Authority that has been swept under the rug. If people look at whats coming from the authority and hamas and other terror groups among the palestinians, you will not be surprised to see the acts that you have today. If thats what you head and thats what you see and thats what you learn day after day, week after week and year after year, if you demonize israel and israelis and they are invading as they put it in their own condemn nation.
