Leone. In their histories, theyve overcome great challenges and they are drawing on that great strength and resilience today. Insider attack. How an officer ambushed Coalition Troops killing a twostar general. As the u. S. Prepares to withdraw, can we avoid these insider attacks . The army and the nation has lost a true american hero. Good day, everyone. Im Andrea Mitchell in, wa ton. With a new poll showing that americans are more fed up, the 2016 possibilities are showing mixed results. Kentucky senator rand paul spent three days in iowa taking direct aim at Hillary Clintons record as secretary of state. Specifically, libya. Our embassy finally fled. Hillary clinton made a host of errors being there in not protecting our embassy and i think precludes her from ever being commander in chief because of it. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton was participating in the colbert report. I once had an entire show with president bill clinton. Oh i hate to break this to you, stephen, but ive met him, too. Gosh, you know everyone. What kind of loser do you have to be to not be included in your book . Well, youre not in it, stephen. Oh, arent i . You ever notice how we are now ever in the same room at the same time . Joining me now for our daily fix, chuck todd, host of the daily rundown, chris lizza, and Bloomberg News jean cummings. Chuck, first to you and the new wall street journal poll today that shows, first of all, america has not gotten over the recession. People are gloomier than ever about their prospects. We keep hearing this. You see the Economic Data that comes out from washington, things are moving, we see the job editions and all of that stuff but theres this lingering perception so we really dove deep into finding out where are people in the recovery. They have recovered from the Great Recession technically but you can tell that as far as their psyche they havent recovered but they are still feeling the effects of the stagnation. A lot of the fallout from the Great Recession, that is still there. Anywhere from 1 in 10 to 1 in 3 americans having to deal with some sort of issue right now that is fallout from the Great Recession, eastbound as the, quote, economy looks better. And this is a backdrop and as our pollster said, it is a screaming attempt by the public to say, hey, politicians, the number one issue is the economy. Youre not talking about it and you dont you certainly dont have any ideas that youre campaigning object to try to fix it. And one reflection to all of you, chuck, first, the fact that 57 in this poll of those people questioned say that they were upset about things enough to carry a protest sign. Thats so unusual. That shows you how stirred up people are. There was no singular thing. Weve gotten word clouds of what democrats were saying, mostly mad at congress, what republicans are saying, mostly mad at the president. But you can tell its the polarization of the country in many ways reflected in sort of the anger in the two parties bases. But i think we have the most unusual Political Landscape coming in the fall. Maybe it is going to be a way of election and maybe everything is going to go in the direction of the republicans as history might indicate, sixyear itch and all of that. But this is a much different political climate. This is a group of americans not happy with the direction of the country, not happy with the direction of the president but not happy with the direction of congressional republicans. You have a bunch of voters saying, they are not interested in this campaign because nothing about it seems to be that inspiring. And you know what, they are right. Ive watched these ads, andrea. You have seen them. Name one candidate that has an intriguing campaign on the economy at all. Im not seeing it. Nothing on the economy. In fact, gene cummings, lets talk about whether this actually helps outsidertype candidates, not an outsider but someone like rand paul. Does this disadvantage him as a libertarian . And weve seen him in iowa now for three days. Well, he definitely is doing things differently and that is something that will help him. He is reaching out to minority communities. Hes reaching out to young people. Hes planning to go to college. Just to be different is a good thing. In terms of the messaging of this campaign, its all about the economy and jobs. They dont hear anyone in washington talking about those issues. They hear about impeachment, they hear about immigration, they hear about all sorts of different things. But they have not seen out of this congress and this white house a sustained message for the last year and a half about how they are going to create jobs. And thats what people want to hear about. And what about, chris cilizza, rand pauls policy issue, the fact that he first said and then denied that he said that we should be cutting off foreign aid to israel and egypt, he had real concerns about that, that whole isolationist strain in the republican libertarian part of the party that he does represent and is now trying to clean up . You know, look, i think its probably worth remembering that rand paul has only been in elected office for coming on four years now. Actually, three years. This guy got elected in 2010. Never held office before that. I do think his bigger vulnerability is on Foreign Policy. Its the part of his belief system that is probably further test from the mainstream of the Republican Party and the country. Although, you can argue the mainstream of the country. And i am with jean on this, you look at that poll and that poll basically says everything is broken and no ones offering ideas how to fix it or even saying, what if we look at the problem from a different perspective . Rand paul, to his credit, is saying, lets look at the problem from a different perspective. Lets try to big a different governoring coalition. There are not all that many voices. He is different and looks and talks different than virtually every republican out there right now. Chuck, the one person that doesnt look and talk differently from past campaigns is Hillary Clinton. No, its true. I think this is going to be a real challenge for her. The upside is that when it comes to the economy, the clinton brand is the Gold Standard as far as many swing voters are concerned. You just look at the trend charts, the right track, wrong track number. It never crossed 55 at any point in time during the clinton years. It hit 60 at bush. So there is this sense that the good old days, as far as particularly with voters over the age of ho, 40, is the clint years as far as the chee. Thats the upside. Of course, she still has to figure out, what is the future . How does she campaign and be the future . She solves that problem, shes going to be able to march into that white house but thats her biggest hurdle. Andrea, one other point to make in terms of your poll, as much as obama is in the tank and people are unhappy, if you look at your demographics, the republicans are doing really terribly with all of the growing constituencies, hispanics, and thats why what rand paul is doing is so important, that at least some of them on the republican side try to reach out to those constituencies because the numbers in your poll are quite bad for them on that. Jeanne cummings, chris cillizza, chuck todd, thank you so much. You all might want to change your internet passwords today. A russian gang has stolen 1. 2 billion passwords from hundreds and thousands of websites. The theft was confirmed by a Security Firm in milwaukee working for its clients. This is a major flaw in internet security. Long known by experts but still not addressed. Joining me now is nbc justice correspondent pete williams. This is different than the target theft. Its not your credit cards but it is your passwords and it is showing a big flaw on the internet. Right. Its different from the target breach because target was very careful to attack that website and the way it worked with the retail point of sale. This is a technology to steal data out of websites that has been around for a decade. Part of the lessons here is that most websites do a pretty poor job of security. If they cant defend themselves against a known enemy that has been out there for a decade. Thats point one. Point two is, the milwaukee firm that discovered this, so far this russian gang that has this information is not using the user name and passwords to ex employed peoples personal information and steal their identities instead of selling the ecmails, sort of a marketig thing to send spam emails. Offering to perform a service for people who want to send spam. I guess on the one hand, thats the good news. Youre right that the experts say that its a good reminder to change your user name and password because as soon as you do, the data that this gang has acquired becomes out of date. Thanks so much, pete williamwilliam williams. People are going to be spending a lot of time on their computers. Or not. Or not. The two americans undergoing treatment at emory hospital in atlanta are showing signs of improvement. The president of the organization is reminding the public about those still fighting for their lives in africa. I dont know if you know, but there are 50 doctors, liberian doctors for 4 Million People of liberia. Joining me now is the liberian Prime Minister. Its great to see you. Great to see you. Thank you for visiting again. Thank you. Youre here for the summit and 14 billion have been committed to the african continent but ebola is at the top of the minds for many people. Tell me what your country is doing to try to deal with this . Its a Big International hub. Thank you. This is where one of our major transport hubs, where the liberian american landed. He was taken to a hospital and what was happening is those that took care of him, theres a case of a man who died but five other cases. The good thing is that they have been identified, taking care of the issues what is going on now. We also have had very good meetings here, including a talk that my president had with Vice President biden, what were doing to identify isolation wards, where people can be taken to and also the u. S. Says they are ready to send people from cdc to work with us. So i think on our own part, we are educating the public. The announcements are out there. We started before we came to the summit. And we are taking strong steps to make sure that this is dealt with and contained. And youve been working on another issue that is so important to nigeria, which is boko haram, the Terror Threat and what has happened to the girls. Young girls have been seen on suicide bombing missions, that perhaps some of the kidnapped victims have sent back out with bombs attached to them. This is not something that weve been able to confirm but these are reports today. What can you and your president do to try to counteract the threat of boko haram . First, andrea, let me make clear, we do not have any reports of these girls being sent out. I just want to make that very clear. The president is doing everything he can. It is a very difficult situation. The reason being, you dont want to do anything that would jeopardize the girls. As you know, were dealing with people who are not exactly you cant there are people who are ruthless. I think thats the only word. So how to use all means, including talking to them, behind including both military and nonmilitary means to try and get the situation resolved. I think all of these actions are being taken. Our heart goes out to the girls and their parents. Theres no one single day that we dont wake up thinking of the situation of these girls and everything is being done. You know, the u. S. , uk, france, and israel, they are all helping us to try to locate and get intelligence and follow what is happening with these girls. Was there too much delay in accepting help from around the world . I dont think so. Maybe delay in terms of information, communication as to what government was doing, maybe some of that at the very beginning. But in terms of action to try to help these girls, no, i would say not. And i also want to say, the president met with all the parents and 57 of the girls who escaped and i was also in this meeting and i was interacting with the girls, talking with them directly, hearing their stories. But more importantly, the actions that we are taking, we also feel that these girls escaped and the chibok girls must come in a different environment. There are two or three initiatives that are being done. One is Safe School Initiative which gordon brown, the former uk Prime Minister has been dealing with and working with us on that Safe Schools Initiative and make it safer for our children and domestic resources as well as international. The president just opened a Victim Support Fund and some nigerian businesses have responded by donating money last week. And finally, theres a longterm initiative to improve development in the Northeast Area where these activities are happening. And all this within the context of this african summit which has shown enormous appetite by American Business ceos to do business in africa. Absolutely. And if you permit, the one thing in spite all of these issues, the American Economy remains strong and resilient. Its great to see you again, thank you so much for this visit. Thank you, andrea. And now to something uplifting. It proves the power of a crowd when people Work Together when this man in perth, australia, caught his leg in between a platform and the train. They pushed it back just enough to free his leg and get him back uninjured. Remarkably, he was able to catch the next train. Gov today, friends, family, and the military community are mourning the loss of major greene who was killed outside of kabul. He was on a routine visit with Coalition Troops. The shooter was killed moments after his deadly attack. His wife is a retired army colonel and his son is an active army officer. This loss so close to the end of the war is especially tough to take. He was always willing to help soldiers and thats what i always loved about harry. Some of us had to give the ultimate sacrifice, too. Im sorry for it to be anyone but im really sorry, you know, my condolences to his family. President and ceo of the Aspen Institute and the innovators is out this fall and u. S. Army veteran, an accomplished author. Welcome, both. Wes, to you. Here weve got a general who has his ph. D. , hes there, highranking, in afghanistan, visiting Coalition Troops and were on our way out. How can we say Mission Accomplished when were still having these attacks . First, our condolences go out to the family of general greene. He was one of the best that the army had to offer. Its a huge blow to the entire army family. And i think it goes to show just the complications that were not just seeing in afghanistan but well continue to see in afghanistan. And i think it really also shows, you know, two complications that were going to have to deal with as the redeployment process begins. One is the tribal nature of afghanistan. Im very cautious to put iraq and afghanistan in the same sentence but the reason isis was able to move so quickly through sunni areas of iraq was because these were sunnis. Theres a tribal nature that we have to understand about these conflicts as were looking at redevelopment. And the third thing the second thing is not only understanding why training is important but also screening of individuals that are party to the afghan party and Mental Health screening. All of these factors in. And i think that the tragic death of general greene adds a sense of clarity. In 2012, there were 53 americans killed, 38 attacks. In 2013, 16 americans killed and 10 attacks and in 2014, 3 americans have been killed in 2 attacks. As we begin to withdraw, the americans will not be as wellprotected, clearly. We also have the political situation which has been unraveling, despite secretary kerrys we thought he had successful attempts to get t things back in shape. Iraq is clearly a disaster. Libya is a failed state. We have to suspend and evacuate our embassy and here afghanistan, looking at all of the reconstruction and all of the hope is really very fragile right now. Yeah. I mean, first and foremost, on a day like today, you have to remember with somebody like Major General greene what america does. It sends wonderful people, who are wellintentioned around the world to do good. Les moore was one of those as well. Our heart has got to go out to general major greenes family. When were there in a place like afghanistan, we are there trying to help. We have to feel a little bit of humility given the litany of countries that you just mentioned. One of the people in contention for the presidency of afghanistan ran a failed States Program at the aston institute. He spent the last three or four years with us at the Aspen Institute and hes one of the great efforts at how to deal with failed states. Hes now embroiled in this political struggle in afghanistan. Its very difficult for us in the United States to say, even with great people like Major General greene, were going to take failed states and make them into democracies. And when we think about what has happened there with the al maliki leadership which then alienated the sunnis and created a space, a vacuum for isis to come in so forth fully and now we see what is happening in the kurdish region, its one thing after another. At this point, a poll shows that 36 of those polled do not approve of the president s handling of Foreign Policy. This is clearly a reflection, most likely, of the ceasefire in gaza. 36 approve and 60 disapprove. I had those numbers backwards. Youve been in afghanistan, wes, and youve served valiantly there. When we see this kind of insider attack, how can we work with Coalition Partners with any confidence since everyone is armed . The military has done a much better job. Youve pointed to it, andrea, the number of attacks of the green on blue have decreased significantly but its not like these things are happening in isolation. Its not like they are the redeployment or happening around the world are not happening completely blindly to the personnel who are overseas fighting. I think one thing that we all can think about, particularly as the veterans as were now back home, is you always want to think about and make sure that the work that you did and the impact that you were trying to make can be longterm sustainable. But one thing we also realize, there is never going to be a military solution to it. These are Political Solutions that have to be made and, as walter pointed out, not be made by us. They have to be made in the countries in which these conflicts are taking place in. Walter, i wanted to ask you, because i know you were asking with wes on your service here, tell me about the origin of that and what you are envisioning . General Stan Mcchrystal came back from afghanistan and when he came to the Aspen Institute for one of our conferences, he came up and pushed the idea that every american should spend a year a service year, in national service, whether in the military or domestically. Wes moore took up that battle as we did at the Aspen Institute to try to create Service Corps and i want wes to have words about it because they have created a Baltimore Service year program. I think it shows what is strong about our country, whether in the military or domestically, teach for america or in the army, if you spend a couple of years in service to our country, it makes you a better and stronger patriot. Wes, take it up. Were incredibly excited to work with the Aspen Institute and it is this idea that we want to be able to recruit and obtain and rebuild. In this case, in the case of baltimore. But in order to have a much bigger and stronger city and you are balance and Rural Communities is that Everybody Needs to have a stake. Everyone needs to be involved. And so by asking people, it is going to really help to redefine as to what we think about a cohesive nation and cohesive structure going forward. Well, i could not agree more. Wes moore, thank you for what youre doing. I heard that Stan Mcchrystal presentation i guess a year ago. Im so glad that youre following up on it. Thank you both. Thank you, andrea. Cheers. At an elaborate white house dinner last night, celebrating the largest African Leaders at a business summit. This is a day after announcing 14 billion in private investment deals to improve trade relationships between africa and the United States. Joining me now is mark shriber. Thank you very much. Great to see you. Thank you. Weve got this crisis, i was talking about the ebola crisis. Save the children has some initiatives to try to take action and to try to protect the children. Were on the ground in those three countries working with over 100,000 children in guinea and sierra leone. We are educating folks, working with organizations to spread that information. Were doing information on radio, billboards and obviously supplying a lot of medical equipment. Gloves, sanitation, bottles, water, antibiotics and making sure that folks are clear and then going back into their community. Having worked with 100,000 children, i just spoke with some folks today that think its stabilized a little in guinea but the death toll continues to rise, the infection rates continue to rise. Its a tough situation, obviously. And while we understand that you focus on the two americans and the elaborate procedures taken to bring them home safely for treatment here, just the reminder from their Mission Group that there are millions and millions of people in africa who dont have anywhere near these kinds of services. Yes. Especially if they didnt have a save the children. We were on the ground before the crisis took place and were going to be there after it takes place. Thats saves motto. Were there to do the preparedness, response, and recovery after a disaster and also longterm work like education and health care in all three of those countries and than moving into nigeria as well. One other piece of that is maternal health. Michelle obama and laura bush were speaking about that. Lets watch. Men leaders, women, we value women and girls we wont tackle those other problems until we prioritize our girls and understand that they are as important in their education that is important as the education of our sons. And the importance of girls education, that was, of course, Michelle Obama with laura bush and our friend roberts. Focusing on the girls and the women, we need to worry just not about when girls are kidnapped but all the time. All the time. One of the amazing statistics is that over 800 women die every day in child birth process through infections, through postpartum bleeding. 18,000 kids under the age of 5 across the world are dying from preventible diseases, like diarrhea, pneumonia. They have called to end all preventible deaths, to increase the health care for mothers and for infants and children. Weve got to do more. You know, rasha who you had on your show yesterday talked about investing in this area. I wish the president would call for a convening of world leaders, not only African Leadership thats here in town right now but private sector, nonprofit businesses. This summit has been so great as far as putting investments into africa. I had a discussion with the president of rwanda four months ago and he said all of the investments in africa dont matter if our babies are dying and our mothers are dying. Hes absolutely right. The fact that 800 women are dying every day all around the world and 18,000 kids, this ought to be a real priority and im hoping the president who didnt call for it this morning calls for it this afternoon, a press conference. He ought to convene everyone and mandate them to come back with a plan to save all of these children and to save the mothers by the mothers day of next year is what save the children and all of us are hoping. Its 5 00 at the state Department Today and the u. N. General assembly is in september as it is every year. We hope to talk to you again. Its such a outrage, isnt it . 800 women dying every year . Unnecessary deaths. Yes. We need the u. S. Government to really step in and to lead. It would be fantastic. If we can put a man on the moon, president obama can prevent deaths t. Would be fantastic. You heard it here. Thank you very much, mark shriv shriver. And speaking of women, the nba is hiring the leagues First Time Ever fulltime female coach. Becky hammon will be an assistant coach. It must be ostracized from the family of nations for its callous abuse of civilians and hamas must be presented from
