There is a real clear choice in this election. Among the crisis we are dealing with is a long overdue on reckoning racial of over justice in america. On one hand you have joe biden. Who as a student of American History and a truthteller has the courage to speak the phrase black lives matter. Joe biden who recognizes that this virus, covid, has such raci racially desperate impact that black and latino are three times likely to get it and twice likely to die from it. You heard him talk about it on the debate stage. That one and 1,000 of black people have contracted and died from covid. By the end of the year if there is no control over it, one and 500 black americans will have die from this. Joe biden knows. We need to deal with the racial disparities. Not only in our healthcare system, we need to deal with the criminal justice and decrimin decriminalize marijuana and the people who have been convicted and we get rid of the private prisons and cash bail because it is an economic issue as much as a criminal justice issue. Joe biden who says well ban choke holds and carotid hold that george floyd would be alive today. It is not right that you do it in one place, you get fired and you move to another place and get hired. On the other hand, you have donald trump, who during a debate in front of 70 million americans refused to condemn white supremi supremacists and supremacist groups and double down on stand back and standby. It is not like it is a oneoff. He came into Office Challenging the legitimacy of americas first black president. Remember charlottesville . Folks were peacefully protesting racial injustice. A young woman died in that protest. On the other side, there were neonazi, carrying tikki torches and spilling racial and spewing antisemitism. Donald trump called mexicans as criminals and rapists and put on a muslim ban. We are better than this. We deserve better than this. We deserve a president who understands like joe does. Regardless of where you come from and where you live, your race, gender, the language your grandmother speaks, the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us. We deserve a president. We deserve a president who understands the measure of the strength of ta human being is nt based on who you beat down. It is based on who you lift up. We deserve better. And then we are dealing with the Climate Crisis. You know i come from california, let me tell you the west coast is burning. From california to oregon to washington and over to colorado. These wildfires, i met with families who have been evacuated and never to return to their home. I have met with firefighters who are fighting fires while their own homes are burning. My brotherinlaw is a firefighter, you look at the gulf coast states, how they have been battered do you know there has been five named storms this year already . And you name a storm because it is that bad. In the midwest, floods to the point that farmers have lost a whole season of crops. And so you got joe who says hey we need to deal with this. We need to embrace the science and we need to see that the clock is ticking. We need to have timelines like by 2050, we net zero emissions. We need to understand that when we invest in the infrastructure to save our climate, thats also an investment in creating millions of jobs. Joe understands that it is also a civil rights issue when you take into account of all of the places in our country that have poor air quality. 70 of the people who live there are people of color. Joe understands these issues. On the other hand, you have donald trump, who when asked about the wildfires in california, so the journalists ask Something Like so these wildfires are happening and scientists are telling us that these extreme weather conditions, the human behaviors are contributing. What do you have to say mr. President . The president of the United States who is also the commanderinchief of the United States responded science does not know. Like what is that . Well, no, mr. President , science does know and so does the leading scientific magazine that endorsed joe biden to be the next president of the United States. Welcome back to another hour of american voices, we are tracking a mad dash to election day. You have been listening to senator Kamala Harris in North Carolina. Two days left to make your voices heard. Both campaigns are out in full force to show up what undecided voters are left and fuel momentums on most loyal. We are on ahm mad dash on the battleground that he hopes the win again. I dont think it is fair that we have to wait a long period of time after the election. If people wanted to get their ballots in, they should have gotten their ballots in long before. They dont have to put their ballots in the same day. They could have put in their ballots a month ago. Two more stops to go for team trump tonight. By morning, hell be back at it taking air force one back to North Carolina to pennsylvania and michigan and wisconsin. As for team biden, they are laserfocused on battleground of pennsylvania. They held a number of events using what little time is left to lay out whats at stake. I dont care how hard donald trump tries. There is nothing going to stop the people from voting and voting overwhelmingly. America votes and america will be heard. I believe the message is going to be clear. It is time for donald trump to pack his bags and go home. Tomorrow their final pitch before election day. Well see joe biden and Kamala Harris back in pennsylvania. Our race and latest final nbc news wall street journal polling shows joe biden with a 10point lead over donald trump nationally. Margins are much tighter when you look at each battleground. Biden is up by three points. Early voting ended in florida raising a key question here and across the country tonight about what we could see come tuesday considering more than 85 million americans have already had their say. With me now to drill down on the stakes of florida, nbc news shannon in op opaopalocka, flo with shannon pettypiece. Reporter you mentioned a moment ago how many people have cast their ballot. In florida, nearly 9 Million People have already voted and it is about to signatuurpass or cl the total votes of 2016. The president asked how many people voted and nearly everyone in the crowd raised their hands. How much influence any of this could have in a state like florida right now is yet to be determined. You dont know how many ultimately showed up but millions and millions here have already voted. I have to tell uhyou, you h been hearing from voters. What do you expect the president to hit on in tonights speech . Reporter well, particularly in florida, hes targeting his message at latinos, those from venezuela and cuba. We have seen this message to be resonating with voters, we have seen the president s number coming up among latino voters in south florida where i am at right now. He needs enough voters to offset the support, hes losing to seniors. I will say again we are in Miamidade County of a vastly majority latino county. This is not a large latino crowd that has come out here tonight. Interesting. Kerry, what did early voters telli telling you or whats driving them to the polls . Reporter florida is more than one state and south florida is different than where i am in tampa and you go over to orlando, you have jacksonville and the panhandle, all different communities and one way to separate it out is we had the early voting polls and in most of the states. We have two time zones. Then all early voting is over in the state. As shannon mentions, we had a Record Number of people who voted inperson or by mail. We are talking about 8. 7 million. 62 of florida voters have already voted and while in south florida they may be talking about issues like dictator in south america. In this part of the state, theyre not talking a bout the personality of the candidates. They are focusing on the issues. Whats more important to me is having the right person handling that seat. Someone thats the right person leading the nation. Some issues were important, i would love to have a leader in place properly handle the p pandemic and so sorry for all tl families that lost their loved d ones. The Climate Crisis is a big concern. It is important to have all americans be treated equally and have equal protection under the law. Thats at stake under our current leadership. Reporter the campaign will break down voters by various groups, black voters and suburban women. The most Important Group in the state of florida because they are the strongest voting block are seniors. Those were 65 plus years old. They are the strongest voters and they are conning that in the early voting. In the group of republicans and democrats, it is pretty closely split among that senior group. It is the 18 who are no party affiliation. It is that group of voters thats likely going to decide the battleground that we are in the state of florida. When you look at this, we are in tampa bay, the i4 corridor that decides who wins or loses the election in florida and it is likely to be once again those older voters along the i4 corridor who makes the decision. Election day is going to be busy. 62 of registered voters have already voted, alicia. Thank you shannon and kerry. Lets bring in our guests, mark caputo, a political senior reporter, patty, we are in the home stretch here. What dynamics are you seeing that are shaping the race here in florida . To kerrys point senior voters matter and so do white voters generally. The fact that the president is coming to miami suggests that they think they can make end roads with the cubans american conservatives here because they expect to lose some of those voters in the rest of the state and theyre hoping to make up for some of that. Mark, what are you watching for . One of the counties to watch is miamidade. Miamidade is the only county, only democrat heavy county where republicans are casting a higher share of their electric having higher turnout race than democrats. Something is odd here. The democrats is not showing up like republicans are. If the democrats dont get a big turn out in miami, it is hard to win in the rest of state. To pattys point is possible. Joe biden appears to be doing better than Hillary Clinton with white voters. White voters are 65 , 62 of the registered vote. Whats the rational you have heard for why you are seeing that in miamidade . You know thats a good question. The main thing is this. Donald trump has made florida not his second home but his home. He spent a lot of time here. As you look at the miami medium market and Miamidade County. Hillary clinton blew the doors off donald trump here. The most populace county. He could not afford that kind of leading again against another opponent who has fewer challenges than Hillary Clinton did and joe biden. He spent a lot of time and attention here. Donald trump was crack down cuban and also carrying that policy in venezuela and columbians that hes with them and hes against these socialist leftests and gorillas who have destroyed the country. It speaks to a lot of people in Miamidade County. Patty i was talking to voters here in south florida, so much of what i hear, you have done some great reporting about misinformation, circulating specifically in Spanish Language and chats on radio and digital, how much is that factoring in the final days of this race. Often what that results in is in depressing the vote, confusing the people where they dont go to the polls at all. We dont know if it is something happening here specifically or more broadly. I would say to marks point also that there is not a real response from the democrats and not just the biden campaign. This is done years ago or two years ago when he had the midterm election. They sort of dismiss it as ridiculous. We are not socialist. We are not going to dignify the response. It is sort of stuck without counter wait to it. And even independents who are not americans thats what some of the latino vote in the more republican stronghold of dade county. Patty and mark, thank you very much for explaining the state of florida to us. While polling shows President Trump trailing joe biden among latino voters nationally. Polling of hispanic in florida shows biden just one point ahead of trump. That same poll shows Hispanic Women in florida fa i vvoring b over trump booy a whopping 39 points. This week i got a chance to speak with men and women, republicans and democrats, i started to understand why latino men here appeared all in for donald trump. Reporter you were a democrat, you voted democratic. I was a democratic for 20 years. Reporter what happened . The democrats today gone off the rail. Reporter can you be specific . I come from cuba. Socialism in cuba is communism. Some of the stuff that Democratic Party today is talking about reminepreminds me early day of castro. Reporter have you voted for democrats . Yes, i have. And you voted for donald trump in 2016 . Reporter obviously i didnt like it, hillary. I am not tied to one party. I will cross the party lines as he did. I tried to find the best candidate and the best for our country at the time. Thats who wins my wait. Reporter does anything about him that gives you pause . He seems authentic and how he dictates on twitter, hes not watching what hes saying so i feel a strong authenticity that comes through with trump. Reporter there do you see a authoritarian in his leadership . I think a lot of people dislike him because hes not a great politician. He has a businessmindset. He comes with different ideas. Theyre not Left Progressive ideas. Reporter was there a different democrat that the democrats could have chosen that you could consider over donald trump . Bernie sanders. And to give kamala ten year s in the white house. Thats the way i look at it. Thats one side of the coin here. Here is the other of latino voters, Donald Trumps america is whats fuelling them to biden. Dr. Fauci is someone i have been paying attention to as far as guidelines and how we should conduct ourselves. The fact that he refused to listen to sciencetists and the facts. Thats really dangerous. He only wants people to trust one person and thats him, the sole owner of the truth but hes tweeting misinformation and different theories that are not true. It is just a whole disrespect to the american system that have taken so long to build and been working so well. Thats what dictators do. They put out false propaganda and they tell you the truth is false and the false is and his stories are real. Some of us came here running away from dictatorshidictatorsh. Like me. I am running away from chavez and from maduro and those people dicta dictating, theyre exactly like donald trump. He has not gotten further because hes not allowed to. Give him four more years, well regret it forever. The first time i heard donald trump give any kind of speech way back in 2015, the first thing i said hes a child. Reporter whats the moment when you realize that you did not like donald trump . When he said grab them by the [ bleep ]. And i dont expect it from a teenager and much less our president. He called mexican rapists. I dont think he was talking to mexicans, he was talking to all hispanics. If there was one moment was when he was separating and separating the children. I cant fathom what the mothers are going through not knowing where their kids are and the kids themselves, how do yo you how can you excuse that . It is inexcusable. It should be illegal. For me one of the saddest things is not where the fact we are right now. The Republican Party that i admire is dead. I am voting not just ejoe biden i am going to be voting for every democrats because republicans need to hear this. They have betrayed us. Reporter do you believe our democracy is intact. We stop being a real democracy four years ago. In this country, we are not listening to our people. Donald trump is the leader of a portion of the people. Everybody else is out of that group. He has not been a leader for us. I hope everyone goes out to vote feel that this election that their vote counts and matters. Vote as if your life is dependant on it. Here in florida the 2000s election is burning on the minds of many that are experiencing a political deja vu. The president just wrapped up a rally in North Carolina. He has two more scheduled sti t tonight, georgia. Well go there next as our coverage continues from telemundo headquarters in miami after this quick break. He knows the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us. Joe knows this the real strength of any human being is measured not based on who you beat down but who you lift up. In the final stretch, it is all about the battlegrounds in North Carolina, a state that went to trump in 2016. On the ground there today is Kamala Harris with two stops just 48 hours to go. Our latest polling of North Carolina show as shifting current to joe biden. At this hour hes up six points over President Trump. Msnbcs correspondent tremaine lee is there for us tonight. Good to see you, what does it feel like on the ground . Reporter i noticed a lot more die bbiden signs on the hi. It is probable here on the ground. It is still kind of within the margins of error. Again, i feel it and i saw those signs. You just didnt see that coming from virginia and maryland. Do you have a sense that harris is hoping to hit home there . Reporter the resounding message is joe biden is someone that you can count on. We heard in the primaries of joe biden being a good man when it comes to black voters may well determine the outcome of this state and the national election. Joe biden is as good man. You have four years of donald trump who many believe is a racist and white supremacist. Do you have a sense thats landing with black voters . Reporter to some degree it is. I will give you an interesting stat here in North Carolina. Black folks make up 20 of the electorate. In 2016 donald trump won by 173,000 votes. At the same time, 170,000 voters, registered democrats who voted in 2012 did not vote in 2016. Folks have sitting back and listening to the messaging they had four year to reflect. Many of them are excited to engage back in the political process. Thank you as always. A wildcard tonight in georgia shows joe biden with a fivepoint lead. Thats big news of this reliable red state. Kamala harris made a stop outside of atlanta. Tuesday will be a real test of the party. President trump is set to hold al rally in about an hour, priscilla, good to see you. Reporter one thing they do not to hear is the talk about coronavirus. Half a dozen of supporters in line did not want to hear about coronavirus. They like to hear him focusing on American Values today like freedom and some very concrete issues, jobs and the economy and another point as one person put it, conservative values. We are at northwest georgia. This is a state that donald trump won with more than 70 of the vote. I spoke to a mother and daughter duo, they dont agree the way President Trump carried himself but they would like to talk about abortion and freedom of religion. Those are the issues thats important to them. Priscilla, when we talked about latino states, we talked about arizona and florida and people forget about a state like georgia where there is now a sizable latino population. How are changing demographics more broadly in the state of georgia affecting the president s chances of winning the state . Reporter well, thats a key question here alicia. If you look a little closer to atlanta in the suburbs, votes haves changed dramatically in the past several years. There is something called a reversal. Those are counties that voted for john mccain and mit romney in 2016 for Hillary Clinton. Thats why you see joe biden in the state and Kamala Harris visited it twice and president obama will be here on the eve of election day to rally voters and democrats in that area, hoping that democrats can get a high turn out, they may be able to flip the state blue. Another battleground, arizona. Trump took it in 2016. Can he do it again. Trump is trailing him by six points. Martha mcsally and markle kelly whos holding a 4 lead. What are you hearing . Does trump have the same momentum in 2016 . Reporter the issue here is Donald Trumps campaign have not seen their numbers moved since march. Independent voters for instance, donald trump won by 3 percentage point back in 2016. Now hes under water. Negative 18 percentage point. He won overwhelmingly four years ago. Now hes at an even point with them. Thats the story line that the Trump Campaign has not been able to tighten this margin here in the state. Donald trump won it by 3. 5 percentage point in 2016. Every poll is indicating now that joe biden is pulling off the electoral vote here. I talked to latino votes here, i hear about the economy and healthcare and i hear a bt t about the pandemic. What are you hearing on the ground and how covid is factoring into peoples decisions . Reporter covid has been an undeniable real for every arizonans here. I want to actually bring in chris apiza here. You have become quite a voice, you are speaking at the national convention. You are now on the streets here. Tell me your messages in the closing days. I have been talking to latino voters across maricopa and it has been about covid. Covid is the thing thats on their mind. They want to know who has a plan. They know it is joe biden. We have been really point pounding the paverment and have seen folks ready for a change. Reporter this summer was tough in arizona, 5900 folks including your father passed away. You grew up here and you know arizona. Tell me somebody who knows this state, what do you see happening here and what does it mean to the community . It is amazing. This entire community over the ko course 20 or 50 years to get people to vote. The Latino Community groups have done incredible work here and people are dropping off their ballots and it is so inspiring because we are about to enter into a new arizona. Kristin, we met four days after your father surfaced, can you tell me what that emotion feels like . I wanted the pain to stop. Now over the course of the last four months, i have spoken to so many people across the state or country who are feeling that pain. And right now on the eve of preElection Night, i feel like we are finally on the cusp of having the country that we deserve. I feel exhausted but ax siex si ra rating. He told me that everyone time the president seems to suggest the only people whose health is on the line is those who are you will vulnerable. Donald trump is telling the current stage of this. Lets talk about pennsylvania in this 2020 race. There is a reason donald trump and joe biden planned to spend the final hours in pennsylvania tomorrow. Stanning stanni standing by for us is nbcs ali vitali. The campaigns are pulling out all the stops tomorrow. What are they hoping to see out of pennsylvania . Reporter well, they hope to see a win and quite frankly the way they have been talking about is they have been priming voters here for weeks and not to be co complacent and cautioning them this race will be closer. Theyre trying to make sure that no voters without going to the polls on tuesday or before then. You heard biden making that same pitch here. His remarks really closely into the economic crisis that has hit this state and so many others across the country arguing that you cant fix the economic crisis until you fix the pandemic crisis. That leaves biden into the core messaging that donald trump has mishandled the pandemic. Both focusing on pennsylvania. They need it on the Electoral College map but also for President Trump, this is a state that he flipped in 2016. He takes this state seriously and you see him going back to all these reminding voters what is they did for him and hes making the pitch here. Biden spending all day here and most of tomorrow here as well and so as his running mate, Kamala Harris. Biden is taking the west with his wife and Kamala Harris taking the eastern part of the state. All of this as part of a pitch to voters where especially in places like philadelphia where we are now, turn out was not where democrats needed to be in 2016. In 2020 democrats making sure that all those voters may have sat home last time they get to the polls as well. The Trump Campaign has spent a lot of time in the state. Poll after poll showing biden at a comfortable lead. I am struck being in florida looking at the polling verses being on the ground how sometimes feels a little bit different. I wonder if you have a sense talking to voters on the ground if it reflects what you are seeing in the polling . Reporter look, alicia, someone who spent the last five years consistently on the road. You need the total evidence of being out talking to voters and looking at the data. When i was traveling around in 2016 with donald trump, thats where we start to see places where he should not have been getting the huge crowd. It started priming our radar to the fact that something may have been up here. I think what we are seeing in this state is places that donald trump managed to flip when they were blue in 2008 and 2012, he made them red in 2016, visiting areas like that, like eerie, pennsylvania, for example, i met voters who feel they feel it is up for grabs. Democrats there told me they feel like they walked down one street see a biden sign and another street with trump sign. These are the toss upstate stat. You got to wait for voters. We are at the point where you just got to see what happens on election day. Ali vitali. Thank you very much. It feels a lot like 2000s. You will find out why after the break when american voices carries on in miami with telemundo. Craig melvin is watching as we barrel towards election day. Craig melvins here. We are a few hours away from the end of voting. One of the things i will be watching is shifting demographic in this country, georgia, places like South Carolina and florida. What may demographics mean . Some of these closely watched states as well. I will be looking at that. As wl i will be looking at that. Well pass many milestones. Moments that define you. And drive you. To achieve even more. So, celebrate every one. Because success isnt just about where you want to get to. Its also about how you get there the all new 2021 cadillac escalade. Theres one thing most of us can agree on, it is that no one wants a repeat of the 2000 elections. Specifically, what happened Election Night in florida. Joining me now, billy corben, director of the new hbo documentary, 537 votes. Thanks so much for being with us. I mean, you spent a lot of time making this doc, what was your biggest takeaway . Takeaway is you need to vote, and you need to possibly fight to have your vote counted. Might not be enough to just vote. That there is really a loss of innocence that happened in the year 2000 that i think ripples quick dramatically to this day. A lot of americans lost faith in of our institutions. The Electoral College, the supreme court, maybe even the media. What we discovered is one of the Political Parties may not really be committed to free and fair elections. They might just be interested in getting power by any means necessary. Yeah, billy, as someone who was not 18 and eligible to vote, that resonates with me and a lot of members of my generation. As i have watched this election, i have wondered how the generation that is coming up behind me is processing what is happening right now. I want to play a clip from your film and get your reaction to it. Take a listen. You had this iconic moment, did tim russert, an nbc, when he said, it all comes down to florida, florida, florida. He might as well have said, it all comes down to miami, miami, miami. Do you think that dynamic plays out again this year . I certainly hope not. I you know, the great thing about miami is its so close to the United States, you know, so i think that i think that theres a lot of very important voters down here who can really make the difference, but i suspect that they probably it will probably go trumps way because the reality is is while we are the biggest and bluest county, we have quite a few voters who support donald trump and so its not just a matter of biden winning miamidade because that doesnt matter. Miamidade doesnt have any Electoral College votes. You need to win the state. The problem is will there be sufficient turnout in miamidade to make up for the deficit that biden will have elsewhere in the state . I suspect that theres not. The first part of the film is focused on the politics of miami. Specifically, the saga over Elion Gonzalez. I have been speaking with hispanic voters here, some cuban, some cubanamerican. Ive not heard Elion Gonzalez come up. I wonder if you think that somehow still hangs in the backdrop of politics here . I think what does hang in the backdrop is the demagoguery and propaganda. I mean, that was really something that was masterminded and perfected down here. Republicans falsely labeling opponents communists and socialists in order to scare gullible and lowinformation voters who see it as a binary choice. Just tell me which candidate is a communist, and ill vote for the other person. Of course, thats not factual, but there are many people susceptible to that kind of propaganda down here. All right. The documentary is 537 votes available now on hbo. Billy corben, thanks for joining us. That is all the time i have today. Im alicia menendez. Up next, our special election coverage continues.
