Hear us and has been making her slow way through the island of manhattan. And, chris, mostly via social media, some of it the new York City Police department, we are just now learning just how many businesses have been hit and how great the damage has been. Reporter its extensive, and its the numbers continue to be counted. In fact, we asked because on the drive over here from macys, brian, we saw a Police Officer being loaded into an ambulance, and we asked how many injuries both of civilians and Police Officers. All of those numbers continue to change. Everything is happening so fast. This is one of the most expensive strips of Retail Real Estate in the world, madison avenue. Theres a fire truck going down. There are a number of police cars that went flying down here. The Upper East Side is the latest area of the city to be hit, and i want to walk over here because this is one of the iconic stores along madison avenue, the hermes. Theyre known for their scarves. Some vandals tried to get in here. They were not able to breach the glass, but you can see that it was pretty well shattered. All up and down madison avenue, these storefronts that people love to visit, love to look at, love to aspire to in many cases, many of them as you can see over there, the ballys store has already been covered in plywood. Whats hard to determine is if theyre covered to protect them or if theyre covered because they have had some sort of vandalism. The other thing weve seen throughout the course of the night tonight, i think i mentioned to you an hour ago, brian, how the breitling store had been broken into. Vandals tried to get in there. By the time we came back through an hour later, it was completely covered. You would never know there was an issue there, that there were arrests there, that police had given chase there. It was just another of the many stores that were boarded up. So much of this city is unrecognizable, and its such a stark contrast to what we saw today, which was mostly peaceful protests. In fact, those protests that went on for hours and hours and went through miles of the city with thousands ever people, the only incidents we really saw were outside of where you and i normally go to work every day, which is 30 rock, brian. There were a few stores there that were breached, and Police Quickly came in there. And then we also saw there were some barriers that were dragged into the street. And what happens and this is repeated time and time and time again. These small groups of vandals show up. Thy try to get into a place. In some cases theyre looting. They hear the sirens, the police come, and they take off. They run. At 11 00 tonight we were told there were about 200 arrests. Since then we have personally witnessed at least a dozen more, and thats just in the areas of the city where we have been. I want to just make one more point about this sort of tail of two cities, the one at night, which has been horrific tonight with the number of shops that have been hit, with the number of arrests that have been made, and the day side, the people who really care about what is happening in america, who really care about issues of inequality, issues of police who are killing blacks in our country, who say it has to stop. When you go to them and you say, why are you here marching through the streets mile after mile after mile, they tell you almost to a person, we have to have police stop killing blacks in america. Theyre passionate about it. Theyre angry about it. They want it changed, and there was a moment and what kind of moment you think it is probably depends on how you view all of this. But down at Washington Square park, a large group of those protesters, maybe as many as 1,000, met up with a group of police, and they started chanting take a knee, take a knee, take a knee. And actually the c. O. Hugged the black lives matter organizer, and the Police Officers took a knee. What people mostly told me in that group, brian, is they were glad it happened, but it doesnt change anything. What they want to see is real systemic change across america, and most of them also believe that what were seeing here across new york and so many cities, the looting, the vandalism, the arrests does not necessarily help with that message. It brings attention, but it brings attention that they think is the wrong kind of attention. Brian. And thank you for that powerful message. Chris jansing on madison avenue in new york city, which has been transformed tonight beyond the closures, we should point out, that already took place during the pandemic were in the middle of. We are very happy to be joined tonight by dr. Cornell west. He is a professor of public philosophy at harvard. For good measure, he is Professor Emeritus at princeton. For extra good measure, he taught at yale just to keep everybody happy. Personal note, im tired of seeing him hang out only with Anderson Cooper on tv. I have been thinking about him since the start of this story and this drama. Dr. West, it is good to see you again. Lets establish, number one, that the Movement Never stopped and is still ongoing every day. And, number two, birth is painful. Is that what were watching . Are we watching the birth of something new here . Well, my dear brother, its hard to say. Its certainly one of the lowest moments in the history of this nation. I think that brother trump is in the process of becoming an american version of george iii, with pharaohs and Pontius Pilate versions of biblical religion. What i mean by that is there is disregard of the law weve already seen. There is a sowing of the seeds of greed, hatred, and corruption, and you reap the chaos. Thats what brother martin said. Chaos or community. You know the great rabbi abraham used to say, the very future of this nation depends on how we respond to the legacy of dr. Martin luther king jr. And what he had in mind is what are you going to do about your poverty . What are you going to do about your racism . Not just about black people, but against indigenous people, against asians, against jews, against muslims, against mexicans and latinos. What are you going to do about your materialism, your addiction to spectacle and superficial things of money and commodity, and what are you going to do about your militarism. Internationally, the military base, the drones. Domestically, the militarizing of your police and the ways in which that has a disproportionate impact on the weak and the vulnerable, who tend to be black people and other peoples of color, and poor and workingclass whites, but disproportionately black. In this moment of reckoning, my dear brother, means were at a fork in the road. Right now theres a massive crisis in the legitimacy of any leadership. Whos actually speaking out . Of course the Republican Party is following the gangster who is the leader. The democratic party, well see what brother biden has to say, but its hard to believe hes going to be able to come through with what is necessary, even though hes so much better than brother trump. We must have a spiritual, moral, and democratic awakening among all of the citizens who care, recognizing were going to disagree in the Public Square but recognizing that we are losing our democracy. And anytime any society can no longer mobilize the best of its past it could be lincoln. It could be frederick douglass. It could be walt whitman. It could be toni morrison. It could be i wont go on and on. But do we have what it takes . Its hard to say. If our system has become so choked by greed and hatred and contempt that it doesnt allow for reform, then the choice is between violent revolution, violent explosions that occur over and over again. And im opting for nonviolent revolution. By revolution, all i mean is what Martin Luther king meant, which is the fundamental sharing of power, resources, respect, and wealth. Redistribution of wealth, what brother bernie is talking about. But we are in this together. We hang together, or we hang separately. But we are also a part of the world, and the world is looking. Chinese empire against our own empire. Can it undergo the kind of democratic awakening because it needs fundamental change as well. What about our brothers and sisters in latin america . What about our brothers and sisters in the middle east . Oh, precious africa. It is a global affair. Weve got ecological catastrophe waiting for us, and if we have leaders that view it as a hoax, then the whole planet goes under, and its all over, and all youve got is the cockroaches. Thats where we are now. But i do have hope. Im a blues man. Black people been through slavery. Black people been through neoslavery called american terrorism and lynching, and weve been through so much hatred, and weve always produced magnificent love warriors like don coltrane and the toni morrison. Love forces us to take off the mask we know we cannot live within but fear we cannot live without. Yes, those love warriors, where are they . Where are the love warriors to teach our young people, no matter what color, put love and justice in your struggle and get that revenge out. But we acknowledge the pain. And tell them those at the top, that the days of your weeping, this chaos based on your greed is producing precisely the opposite of what amos, what esther, what jesus, i would add mohammed, is all about. Justice, justice, choose ye justice. Let justice roll down in waters like a mighty stream. Thats hebrew scripture. Jesus running the money changers out of the temple, knowing its their greed thats choking the best of what was going on in jerusalem. Thats what we need. If we dont meet that challenge, brother brian, a world of trouble. Oh, were in a world of trouble, all right. A blues man like you no doubt knows my favorite, which is no shoes by john lee hooker. Oh, yeah. In which he writes about being at the very bottom in life. Just there are no shoes on his feet and no food for his family. And what we are seeing in the streets is the kind of desperation that comes with easily 50 million of our american citizens unemployed, north of 100,000 of our fellow americans dead in a pandemic that happens to be slicing, way overindexing through communities of color and poverty. Am i correct in saying that some of the destruction were seeing and some of the looting were seeing right up to and including tonight is the intersection of anger and opportunity . Well, the intersection of anger and massive neglect, massive poverty, dilapidated housing, decrepit school systems, not enough jobs with a living wage, no access to health care, and the collapse of family, the collapse of community, the collapse of schools. And so you get these precious individuals and i love my brothers and sisters in the street wean when theyre long, but i love them enough to correct them. Gangsters come in all forms. I got a lot of gangster in me. But the challenge is the gangster isnt at the top. Its been sucking so much of the wealth going to the greedy, so much of the power going to its connection to the greed. No democracy can survive when its public life, its public goods are so privatized and militarized and individualized. John dewy taught us that, one of our great philosophers. Weve got to look at the best of our past in this moment and see whether we can mobilize it for these new circumstances. If we can, well make it out like lincoln, like fdr, like lbj. But if we dont make it out, then we just become another empire that had high democratic possibilities that understood itself as the great city on the hill, the grand exemplar of liberty, but never came to terms with your slavery, never came to terms with your jim crow, never came to terms with your working class that was unable to gain access to jobs with a living wage, never came to terms with the humanity of the vast majority of humankind, women, never came to terms with the rich humanity of our precious trans and gay and lesbian brothers and sisters, never came to term with the new immigrants. I believe weve got a whole lot of magnificent human beings in this country. The problem is, is that its hard for that to spill over given the rigidity of our structures. And thank god that those in the street, especially during the day, come from all colors, all gender, all sexual orientations for the public lynching of our black brother george. It sparked something deep in the souls of every color, every jenldzer in this nation. But we do have to acknowledge the degree to which weve got to keep track of the best of who we are and render accountable everybody at the highest level as well as those on the ground. Please remember all those watching that we rang in the first moments of june 2nd, 2020. Here we are 16 minutes after midnight on the east coast. Thanks to our friend dr. Cornell west. Dr. West, thank you for spending time with us. Its been too long. Love you, brother. God bless your parents, man. Thank you. Thank you very much. Best to you and yours as well. While dr. West has been speaking about all the things that are going into this night were chronicling, weve been alerted that cal perry has a development in the story from louisville, kentucky. Cal, as we go to you, i just wanted to tell our viewers well be updating them on a situation that is sadly deteriorating in seattle right after this. But, cal, go ahead. Reporter yes. We heard from the mayor, who has talked about five days of violence and death here in louisville. On thursday, seven people were shot. On friday, we had those fires. Saturday, at least five Police Officers were targeted. Then late last night, david mcatee, a 53yearold man who serves barbecue on the west side of town, was shot and killed. The circumstances of that are still very confusing. Theres an investigation under way, but we do understand from the mayor that the Police Involved in that shooting did not have their body cameras on. Thats whats led to the violence that we saw tonight. It was about two hours ago when police swept through this park, Jefferson Park here in downtown, and were able to clear it. The question now, of course, is what will it be like tomorrow . The streets are empty now, brian. The concern is that the violence will continue. Again, five days of gun violence now confirmed by the mayor here, who fired the police chief over how things have been going here. He was replaced we heard with the interim chief police, who has been talking about the continuing violence and the need for the National Guard to stay here. We do understand tomorrow there will be that same dust to dawn curfew in effect, brian. All right. Cal perry, thank you very much. A note to our viewers, while dr. West was speaking, we labeled some video of trouble and tear gas, sacramento. We have since learned and relabeled it seattle. Jo ling kent was reporting for us from what we all celebrated together was an orderly and peaceful demonstration that has devolved. And, jo ling, it now looks like youve taken your position on an Athletic Field adjacent go ahead. Reporter can you help me in . Jo ling, we can hear you. I want to make sure your mask is on. Reporter hey, guys, were in the capitol hill neighborhood of seattle right now. I dont know if you can hear me, but we have police now advancing on protesters. Oh, my gosh. Were moving. Were moving. Oh reporter were moving. Go this way. Go this way. Lets go. Lets go. To our viewers, we have a Security Team with all of our correspondents. Reporter we are backing up. There is fireworks being deployed by seattle police. Were retreating. Jo ling, i dont love having you against a fence. Do you have a way out of there . Reporter lets go. Guys, we need to move. Run okay. Maybe the best thing to do here is for jo ling and her crew to be sure about their safety, and we can surmise the rest from her reporting. As often happens, something went haywire. A peaceful protest became the opposite. It appears jo ling was hit or grazed by what we believe is fireworks, which has been in a lot of these protests the only thing they have to fire back at some of the projectiles being fired at them. Nonlethal, sometimes gas, sometimes smoke by Law Enforcement. So it looks like jo ling was at least grazed. She did not indicate any injury, but we would sure like to know that they are out of that tough spot and at least closer to an exit or safety because it looks like police are on the move. To our control room, the question where do we move on to now . Stay with me here. Were going to do what we do in situations like this. Veteran viewers know this trick. Were going to take a break. Our live coverage continues on the other side. You doing okay . Yeah. This moving thing never gets any easier. Well, xfinity makes moving super easy. I can transfer my internet and tv service in about a minute. Wow, that is easy. Almost as easy as having those guys help you move. We are those guys. Thats you . The truck adds 10 pounds. In the arms. Okay. Transfer your Service Online in a few easy steps. Now thats simple, easy, awesome. Transfer your service in minutes, making moving with xfinity a breeze. Visit xfinity. Com moving today. Ahh, the weirdest. You make everyone around you crazy. People are normal and then they hang out with you and then theyre Jack Nicholson in the shining. Im gonna tell my mom you tried to drown me. Its an above ground pool. Youre like eight feet tall. Shaquille brewster by the way, to our viewers that just left that drama that we saw unfold with correspondent jo ling kent, all are well. They are getting to a position of at least relative safety where they can catch their breath and continue to report on what is and what was obviously a moving fastmoving situation. Shaquille brewster has been in the very neighborhood adjacent to the very corner where george floyd was killed at the knee of that Police Officer. Shaquille, i am praying that youre going to tell me that that familys pledge and request to keep that neighborhood a sacred, Peaceful Place has held tonight. Reporter it has, brian. This was the area where Terrence Floyd, the brother of george floyd, came earlier today, participated in a vigil, and pled with the community and the country to remain peaceful, to stop the looting, to stop the destruction. And this is the scene right now. People are just standing around. Before you had people sitting down. About two minutes ago, folks were just sitting down. Theres flowers all around. This is one of the areas where we saw Terrence Floyd come over and have a moment, just have a full moment with the crowd. People surrounding him. He had a prayer. He had just had that moment with the crowd, and youre seeing people just standing around. A little bit earlier this evening, you saw people going around one by one, telling their stories, telling their stories of what they thought of george floyd, of what issues theyre having. It was a very communal feeling that you had here. Again, a very peaceful demonstration. We are about an hour and a half after curfew, and the people here say theyre okay with that. Theyre here to demonstrate, and theyre here to exercise their First Amendment right, and part of that, they say, is breaking that curfew that is in existence. So this is a stark contrast of what were seeing and the scenes were seeing all around the country. Even in st. Paul where you are some protesters going up to the State Capitol there, there were some arrests by officers. But, again, those protesters were sitting down on the capitol lawn. People are making sure their voices are heard. It seems theyre really trying to take the words of Terrence Floyd to heart, be as peaceful as possible but still make those demands. Again, what are their demands . They want the other three officers involved in the death of george floyd, they want those officers arrested. There have been chants of one down, three to go. They want those other officers to face some sort of justice, and thats what theyre advocating for tonight, peacefully, at a scene they consider sacred ground. Again, right back there is where one week ago today, one week ago is where george floyd died. Brian. A tranquil place, beautiful sound in the background as Shaq Brewster gives us the latest live report from there, a hallowed place now in the twin cities. Jo ling kent is now back in a position to give us an update. Jo ling, ive been assured everybody is okay, and whatever sparking object hit you did not hurt but was enough along with the approaching crowd to know that it was time to go. Reporter yeah. Hey, brian, we were in a safe position when this happened, and then we had to retreat and fall back. Basically what happened is we have been with this group of protesters for hours today. It has been peaceful from the downtown march as we showed you earlier all the way up here to capitol hill. What happened was the particular group we were following dispersed. Then three other groups, i believe it may have been two joined and rejoined at the intersection. And you saw Police Enforcement and reinforcements show up at the police line. Behind that police line, as we were reporting earlier, there was National Guard about a block over. The reason this is tense here is this is the seattle east precinct just up the block. So essentially what happened is things escalated very quickly. Protesters came into some escalated tension with the police force. The police threw tear gas, flash bangs to disperse the crowd. It appears the protesters had their own counter response, and there were some fireworks thrown. There was some smoke, and it was very quickly escalating. What happened is you saw the flash bangs and tear gas start from the police line and then go forward very quickly over about a block and a half. And frankly the crowds dispersed. The protesters ran in every direction as you may have seen there. And what the police did here worked. Now, whats a bit upsetting about the whole situation is that for the past 24 or 36 hours, its been extremely peaceful, and you have had Police Officers and protesters speaking to each other in really open dialogue sort of ways and sharing communications that i personally witnessed dozens of times over the past day. And so to see this disintegrate so quickly in this neighborhood was very disheartening, i imagine for all parties involved here. But theres still theres a man who needs medical help . Okay. We will pass that on. It appears there needs to be more medical help there at the intersection here in capitol hill. But this comes after a weekend of violence, of looting, of cars being burned out, of weapons exchanging hands as weve been reporting on. We had a period of peace that is no longer the case here in seattle. And the curfew by the way, brian, has been in place for about three hours im not sure exactly what time it is right now, but it went into place at 6 00, so 3 1 2 hours ago. But theres still a presence here of police, and you can see them going in this direction away from the east precinct. You still have demonstrators gathered here on this baseball field here, brian. But seattle has gotten violent again after a period of very welcome peace, and the tensions are now dialed all the way back up to ten. All right. Jo ling, please be careful covering this for the remainder of the night. Same goes to all our friends and your crew, the entire traveling bunch out there. We are joined tonight by an actual resident of seattle, retired fourstar u. S. Army general barry mccaffrey, a decorated combat veteran of vietnam and a former battlefield commander in the persian gulf. General, while not the subject i wanted to discuss with you, this is your adopted home area. I am guessing it is unrecognizable to you right now. Yeah, pretty impressive reporting by jo ling kent. Its been a sort of disheartening scene here in seattle the last several days. Mostly the daytime protests have been focused on Racial Injustice and trying to correct police brutality. During the nighttime, its been wilding. Its been chaos. Its been looting. Nordstrom stores with stuff being thrown out to the mob. So a pretty tricky situation. The police are doing the best they can. The National Guard has been mobilized, unarmed. Political authorities seem to be trying to do the right thing. Its going to have to play itself out, but its a very perilous situation. Which brings us to the reason i wanted to talk to you tonight, and thats what we witnessed today. The president was speaking in the rose garden. We heard the pop of weapons behind him, kind of the dull roar of a crowd, both ubiquitous sounds in most of our big cities over these past several days. It was explained later that what was happening at that moment was the forced movement of Peaceful Protesters out of public parkland, Lafayette Square across from the white house, a very historic couple of acres in washington. And quite literally minutes later, when the air cleared, the president took his walk. We have a photograph taken by the superb doug mills of the new york times. Its a still photo. It happened to be taken in black and white, and it indeed gives the president and the white house the very angle, the geographic angle showing the north portico of the white house, the president approaching the lens. Very dramatic. But in that photo, in the president s team today, unmistakably was the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff wearing camo, army general mark milley. Also with him, aside from the attorney general goes without saying the secretary of defense mark esper. General, theyre going to own their appearance as part of this photo op forever and ever. I want to hear you out, what you made of it as a military man and what you make of the president s announced plans to surge activeduty military to the states and cities where he deems it necessary. Well, look, the photo op was absolutely made me cringe. Mark milley is one of the best soldiers ive met in my entire life. Hes very smart, very toughminded, very fair. He has a legal responsibility to be obedient to legal orders from the president of the United States. Esper is actually a very experienced guy, fully qualified to be secretary of defense, in a perilous political situation. They should not have been there. It was a terrible signal. U. S. Armed forces are to defend the country, not to create domestic internal Law Enforcement operations. So this was a bad scene for our military. Going forward, what will justify, what will prevent the use of activeduty military on the streets of the United States . Well, i think hes bluffing. Hes not going to do it. He has the Legal Authority under both the insurrection. I was in d. C. During one of the march on washington movements. But weve also got this other act passed after the civil war that says to the u. S. Armed forces, do not get involved in domestic Law Enforcement. Dont arrest people. Dont collect evidence. The president can override that with an emergency declaration. I dont think hes going to do it. The solution to this problem is county and municipal leadership and Law Enforcement defusing the righteous anger of a lot of americans over the brutal murder of this poor man and then trying to move forward. Theyve got to control the streets, theres no question about it. We cant have arson in americas cities. But the solution will not be the bayonets of the u. S. Arms forces. General barry mccaffrey, hoping you stay safe in seattle. Thank you so very much for adding your voice to this day we have been covering and this photo op we watched happen in real time in the 6 00 hour here on the east coast. Frank figliuzzi is also back with us tonight. He is a veteran of counterintelligence at the fbi and has long been one of our msnbc contributors in this area. Frank, your comments last night during our threehour coverage in the middle of prime time brought probably the most text traffic on my phone from all the people in my circle of any segment ive done in recent memory. You talked about a group domestically that few people have heard of here before called the Boogaloo Boys and others. It was all in response to a question from me. When these groups of protesters seem unlike all the others, day protests have a certain personality and a peacefulness about them. Everything changes at night. And even within groups, there seem to be a sub group of people willing to commit that violent act. Explain to people what might be going on within our country, who might be fomenting it through social media, and who these groups are who want us to be in a straightup civil war. Yeah, thats we could spend about an hour on that, but im here to tell you that there is a wide spectrum of dangerous groups and individuals who have inserted themselves into these National Protests across the United States. Law enforcement officers are seeing signs and symbols and leadership of the global anarchy movement in various cities, east coast and west coast. And then were seeing on the far right side evidence of a group like you said, the Boogaloo Boys that weve talked about, thats emerging on the scene. And in their private chat rooms and facebook accounts, theyre talking about being present, and they believe they should be encouraging a racebased civil war or at least a civil war of some kind. So they all are coming alongside of legitimate, thoughtful protesters trying to exercise First Amendment rights, and theyre exploiting them. Theyre hijacking this. Now, i think its really important to Say Something here, brian. While the president and the attorney general want to point to the far left only and the Antifa Movement that opposes president trump, this is a small group of protesters across the spectrum. Theyre dangerous, theyre violent. Theyre doing a lot of the property damage. But they are a small group of the protesters. And what im fearful of is that the president is essentially pointing to these violent groups and using them as justification for military response, military solution really to a problem that is a Law Enforcement problem, a problem that requires a dialogue to defuse. And instead of a dialogue to defuse today, we heard about dominating. Whos going to dominate the streets . The governors must dominate their streets. I will send activeduty military in to dominate. We need a dialogue to defuse. This is a Law Enforcement problem. Law enforcement can do this, should be allowed to fix what they got us into in the sense of police misconduct. We should allow that to happen. Frank, take on an internet rumor that is gaining currency every day. I saw no fewer than 500 mentions of it today, and that is in the streets of our cities, new york, l. A. , et cetera, pallets of bricks seemed to conveniently show up in the path of marauding looters and protesters late at night. People on social media have been posting these pictures, still pictures and video, and the comments go as follows. There was no construction going on in this neighborhood. Where did these come from . And its that kind of thing, whether true or not, whether accidental or not, its the passing along of this that gets a plot line hooked in our consciousness. Yeah. Its im glad youre phrasing the question as is. We dont know about confirmation of these stories. Ive seen them as well. I will tell you that in my experience, i have absolutely seen the global anarchy movement amass weapons, stash communications, rocks, bricks, billiard balls and ball bearings in locations throughout a city that they intend to do damage to. So that is a very real possibility. But its equally important for us not to get caught up in this sense that we are being attacked, we are under attack, this requires a military solution. So weve got to watch social media. Theres reports tonights from nbc news, a wellwritten piece by an nbc reporter, on the fact that groups are pretending to be other groups. In fact, this article im referring to, White Nationalist group pretending to be antifa had created a social media account and talked about violence just to be able to point to antifa instead of the true source of it, the White Nationalists. So weve all got to watch social media. Let me tell you the third thing, the third groups we should be talking about. Lets talk about foreign adversaries who are going to use social media to incite riots, put people of opposing sides on the streets at the same time. We have to be intelligent consumers more than ever of our social media. And, frank, a final thought. None of this is fair to the life and the memory of george floyd, and none of this is fair to the goodhearted people who are on the streets of cities and towns in this country, taking a calculated risk in the middle of a pandemic because they feel the need so strongly. And the police have the challenge of trying to allow people to legitimately utilize their First Amendment free speech rights while theyre challenged to suppress the violence thats occurring. So we cant allow these small groups to hijack what is a National Issue that must be dealt with police misconduct. And we should not allow the white house to hijack this narrative and this issue and take the spotlight off the real problem. Frank figliuzzi, our guest again tonight. General mccaffrey before that. I cant thank you gentlemen enough for coming on and explaining as much as you do. A break for us. When we come back, another word about what i just mentioned. Lets not forget this is happening in our population centers. Were seeing people surging into americas city streets. Oh, by the way, we are in the middle of an uncontrolledthusfar pandemic. We have lost over 100,000 souls. Well talk about that when we come back. 9. 95 at my age . 9. 95 . No way. 9. 95 . Thats impossible. We are back, and we want to check back in with Shaquille Brewster in the minneapolis neighborhood where george floyd died. Shaquille, tell me everythings still good. Oh, there is the mural that went up behind the scene where he died. Reporter you referenced it earlier, so i wanted to take you and let you see it. This is one of the three murals or three vigils that weve seen in this one intersection. This is not in the spot where he died. This is around the corner. But this is in front of that new mural that was set. As we just walk around and you see its still a very quiet scene. Things are very calm. Every once in a while theres police in the distance and protesters will hold their hands up and kind of walk in that direction. But thats pretty much it. But this is what you see. These are the people here trying to let their voice be heard, make their point about wanting to stay out. What were watching for here in minneapolis, if you talk to officials, it seems like they feel they have turned the corner in terms of violence, getting that under control. But we also know theres still a lot more to come. One of the things you hear from the protesters all the time is they want to see the arrest of those officers who were involved in his killing. We still have those dual investigations, one from the fbi, the other from the state prosecutors. And that state investigation is now in the hands of the state attorney general. Its gone from the county prosecutor to the state attorney general keith ellison. So the wheels are turning. We could have updates anytime. We have that Memorial Service coming up on thursday, so thats what people are looking ahead to. But until we get some decisions, until we get some more arrests frankly beyond just the one officer, derek chauvin, who put his knee in the neck of mr. Floyd, expect to continue to see scenes like this. People wanting to demonstrate. That sign over there, for example, no justice, no peace, prosecute the police. The other side talks about wanting the other three officers to get charged and arrested. Thats what were seeing right now. Again, pretty quiet scene. Theres some officers way, way down, so thats why youre seeing the hands up right now. Dont shoot. Theres not a clash, though. Let me be very clear. There is no clash right now. You just see them in the distance, and protesters because they are breaking curfew right now, protesters are making it clear they want to stay. They want to be here. And they want their voices to be heard. Brian. Okay. Thats what we like to see. Enough sadness, enough violence. Seven days ago now since the death of george floyd. To our viewers, one other note. New york city notably, it had been since the world war ii era since the last time there was a curfew on the streets of new york. Tomorrow night, were going to see our second straight night of curfew in new york, only earlier, just about at dark, 8 00 p. M. Spotty enforcement of tonights curfew. Just when we came on the air, 11 00 eastern time. Well see how this goes, an 8 00 p. M. Curfew in the city of new york. There are a lot of politics at play to be perfectly candid. The mayor and Governor Cuomo have an absolutely toxic relationship. The mayor and the nypd have had a traditionally toxic relationship. They did surge double the amount of Police Officers in new york tonight that they had last night. They went to 8,000 cops on this task force. It was, to our civilian eyes, clearly not enough, and we had a lot of violence and looting. Midtown all the way down to downtown, the length of the island of manhattan. So well see how that changes tomorrow evening. We are happy to be joined tonight because we did raise the subject earlier by a frequent guest of ours these days, dr. Irwin redlener, pediatrics physician by training, clinical professor with the school of Public Health at Columbia University in new york, where he is director of columbias National Center for Disaster Preparedness with a i was an expertise in pandemic influenza. Doctor, i was looking at some of the gatherings today, trying to view these protests, these marches. Even when people are in a panic, when they have been scrunched together because of incoming tear gas, are on the run as a group, are resting up as a group, and how you must view this sudden massing of people, especially in these metropolitan areas like new york where people, prior to this, had been so diligent about staying inside and waiting out a pandemic. So, brian, its, you know, in some ways words fail you. It was just a few days ago i was worried about the confluence of the pandemic with, you know, hurricane season, which started actually earlier you know, yesterday, and how were we going to handle that. Who would have dreamed we would be in a social, political, moral, and dangerous crisis like were currently in . So were dealing with a pandemic which remains in the background, of course, and remains the fact that we need to be vigilant and careful in keeping ourselves separated. But sometimes in history, what i think is going on here, you have an overwhelming eruption of frustration and anger. So people are putting themselves in peril for a higher purpose. Its sort of like running into a burning building to rescue a kid because, you know, youre going to do that. But here we have people that are outside protesting this murder of george floyd a couple days ago, and were putting ourselves at, i guess, some increased risk for spreading the pandemic. But thats almost irrelevant in a strange kind of Public Health dangerous way here. But the fact is that were trying to cope with whats been unleashed. And the other thing, brian, its important to know that blacks and hispanics have taken the brunt of this pandemic. Theres no way around that. Theyre getting more cases. Theyre getting higher fatalities. They are more and more affected by the shelter in place and the Public Health restrictions. You know, many families are in total frustration. Theyre losing their income, and theyre seeing whats going on around them. Now we have this horrible tinderbox that was set up and set on fire by this murder, and we have this confluence of this social unrest, these protests for good reason, histories of a couple hundred years of slavery and all the other Racial Disparities that were dealing with, and now we have a pandemic overlaying the whole thing. Its incredibly complicated and incredibly dangerous, brian. I have exactly one minute to go, doctor. In your line of work, this is kind of a painful question to ask. Do you now wait the cursory 3 to 14 days and wait with fear that were going to see hot spots around the country on the map. I wait exactly that way, brian. Fortunately most of these protests have been outside, a little less dangerous than being inside crowded together. But still its posing a risk. I see most people wearing face masks whether its for pandemic control or for dealing with tear gas, i dont know. But well see what happens. But nothings going to stop this right now that has to do with pandemics. This is going to play itself out, and hopefully we wont see more deaths and destruction here. Dr. Irwin redlener, who through the prism of his lifes work views what we are watching on television, what weve been talking about perhaps differently from the rest of us, but pointing out that at the heart of this is the murder of george floyd.
