snob. it's tuesday, february 28th, 2012. it's a super tuesday here at msnbc. and next week may be officially super tuesday, but it may not get bigger than this for mitt romney. let's get to the first part of the morning. mitt romney's future is on the line today. this is the third major do or die moment. he survived florida with another big win. can romney survive tonight at the day he was born in? there's no overstating the loss tonight. s no just the handwrittening over whether the establishment tried to find another candidate. but there will be financial issues for romney, which is already bubbling beneath the surface. which leads to whether romney is forced to write his own check. republican heavyweightses, at least publicly are trying to put the best fate they can on romney's problems. >> i know a lot of people in d.c. are ringing their hands. the establishment wish they could pick a candidate earlier in the process. a contested primary is a good thing. >> i don't think there's going to be a strong rallying. >> for what's it worth, we have a republican governor calling for a new candidate at this point. he isn't somebody you would exactly call the republican insider. but there's the first break in the dam. the good news for romney, no matter what happens, he will win more delegates. it's a winner take all states. in michigan 28 of the states will be awarded two at a time to a winner in each of the 14 congressional districts. wost case scenario is there will be a slit many michigan. if romney loses, delegates will not be tonight eels story. another good news of news. a win is a win in michigan. now romney said repeatedly he does expect to win tonight in michigan. a state he won by nine points four years ago. at the closing royal in royal oak, michigan, romney returned to the core message, the economy, saying he could beat the president in the fall. >> my commitment to getting america working will be second to none. that reason i'm going to win in michigan and i'm going to win across the country. to get to that spot, of course, i have to first be our nominee. >> meanwhile, he's trying to down play expectations all of the sudden. telling, conservatives, though, not to compromise when it comes to romney. >> governor romney supposedly is the outsider. well, the outsider acts pretty much like an insider when it comes to public policy. you have a chance to be the point in the race. don't miss the opportunity to stand up. >> now romney's advantage is the votes. santorum's advantage will be democrats crossing over in michigan's open primary, where some union members are encouraging democrats to make the mischief. it's happened before in in the state. santorum's campaign is running 11th hour robo calls asking for democratic votes. >> romney supporting the bailouts for his wall street billionaire buddies but opposed the auto bailouts. on tuesday, join democrats who are going to send a loud message to massachusetts' mitt romney by voting for rick santorum for president. >> now romney is not happy about the calls. called it a dirty trick. >> i wasn't too concerned about what the democrats were putting out there because i figured it wouldn't have much impact. but senator santorum did something which i think is deceptive and a dirty trick, which is he put an ad out there sounding like a labor ad, telling labor folks and democrats to vote against me and vote for rick santorum. so confusing em people. it's a new low in this campaign ch. >> it's amazing how this stuff always gets aired out. 12 years ago the same robo calls were happening for mccain. santorum, by the way, fired back at romney on that charge. >> you mean, when he runs a robocall of my voice from four years ago saying good things about him, that's not a low moment? it's interesting he criticizes me for attracting democrats because one of the things that governor romney's people says is, oh, he can't attract democrats. we'll wait and see. >> the most striking thing about the campaign is how both santorum and romney are limping to the finish line. now santorum's able is he has to win with the democrats. he wrapped up his michigan campaign with an all out attack on the presidents. >> tha how they see you. a group of people to be hooked. like fish. like mindless finish who can just be snagged, and then pulled around. wherever they want to take you. >> and while santorum doubled down on his snob comment. what's been astonishing is that romney is acting as if he's so concerned about alienating some conservatives, he hasn't challenged santorum personally on what some would call gaffes over the last four or five days. >> college is not right for everybody. some folks have other ambitions and want to go in different directions. we want people to freedom and opportunity. it's appropriate for the way people think for them. i'm not going to worry about this language. this is the time for us to come together as people. listen to that caution. if somehow mitt romney is not the guy accepting the nomination, the issue of caution and fear alienating any part of the conservative base will be a part of any analysis of what went wrong with romney, if indeed, this thing ends badly for him. again, a win is a win tonight. poll closes at 9:00 p.m. eastern time in michigan and in arizona. but we might not get the arizona ruls for an extra hour. we'll explain that later. sometimes you have to be careful picking a fight with a guy who is in charge of the executive branch. the president took a swipe at santorum for the snob comments yesterday. >> i have to make a poin here, when i speak about higher education, we're not just talking about a four-year degree. we're touking about somebody going to a community college and getting trained for that manufacturing job that now is requiring somebody walking through the door handling a million dollar piece of equipment. >> the administration will get a new pipeline as soon as it is submitted. >> the decision the president made earlier had nothing to do with the merits of a pop line proposals. it was simply because of the decision by republicans to play politics with this, forced the administration to deny the permit request because there wasn't a pipeline route identified. >> and then they approved another pipeline from oklahoma to the gulf. now republicans on the announcement saying the white house can't have it both ways. this is a case where they may just have. and reminder that congress can't necessarily force things to happen when you're in charge of the executive branch, you get to do that. mitt romney is predicting a sweep in michigan and in arizona today. knowing that if he fails, he could end the entire candidacy suddenly is in jeopardy. peter alexander is in detroit, michigan, this morning. and peter, it's interesting. you sometimes watch the body language of a campaign. two days ago a lot of confidence. we're not seeing the same confidence this morning. >> i think he was trying to show some confidence. romney did try to feel loose and rally the crowd last evening. chuck, as just a quick indication of what we may experience over the course of the day. five minutes ago i smoke to a small business owner and his wife. this is a registered democrat. the child of an autoworker who moved to the state to work in the romney, a man worth as much money as he did, needed to be in the white house, and really couldn't understand the issues that he's dealing with right now. not the story line the romney campaign wants to hear. another narrative that they pushed back against reporters is the narrative of this out of touch wealthy presidential candidate, mitt romney. in recent days with coverage about the nascar comments, the coverage at ford field where they specifically refer to the number of cadillacs that he had. the strategists and -- right now there's concern within the campaign. i've reached out to advisers who get back quickly. they're really waiting and seeing what will happen over the course of this day. >> peter, it's going to be one of those fascinating days to watch things behind the scenes. keep us informed what you see, buddy. >> rick santorum's campaign says no matter what happens tonight, their campaign will come out a winner. ron moth is with the campaign in grand rapids. we didn't think it would be that blatant. >> yeah. i mean, it's pretty clear, chuck. they're going after this very hard in michigan. they very much want to win here. and some of this things that rick santorum has said over the past three or four day, head scratching kind of stuff. for whatever reason he decided to stay away from the things. these tr the type of comments that they love to exploit. these comments, people are scratching their heads about it. what is striking, a lot of folks think that it's still going. he is chucking polls in his own hole, and yet he could get a victory here tonight. he is not backing down from the comments about the snob comment, attacking john f. kennedy's speech in 1960, saying it made him wan to throw up. the kind of language most people would turn around and say this person isn't ready for prime time. yet he's energized the folks in michigan. not just republicans versus democrats. but for us, we against the republican strategy. his base is quite energized. and the democrats go out and poll for him today. we should have a whole different story to talk about come tomorrow, chuck. >> it's going to be a wild night. could be a long night. how is he on the verge of frankly a coin flip between winning and losing the state of michigan? >> well, there's two things. there's the general and there's the specific. i believe through no fault of his own on quote/unquote, the establishment candidate. we've seen individuals try to come forward and be the anti-romney candidate. as you in florida after south carolina it was speaker gingrich. now he is the candidate. so i think mr. romney in many ways is running against a perception that is difficult to get past, no matter what he does or doesn't do. secondly, i think what you saw in michigan is the absence of speaker gingrich in this race is going to be critical to determine where his voters go or done go. much as his absence was in the other three states. that gives us a clearer shot at going forward and the ant anti-romney. >> you made the case that he may never win. in time there's a one-on-one situation where there's another folk splitting up if vote. if he's not able to win here, at some point, santorum could drive newt out of the race then how does romney get to 50% of the republican electorate? >> i think the case is made that you're going to continue to see mr. romney continue to run well. while people may not like the fact that there are other candidates in the race, he's likely to have a head-to-head race. if rick were to drop, all would go to one person. the majority of republicans think that mr. romney is going to be our nominee. i don't think we can ascribe to individual candidates leaving the race that they're automatically going to go somewhere else. >> there's one part of it, the part you represent. the part where we think mitt romney is going to be the strongest as the heart and soul of the auto industry and and around the suburbs. but the other parts of michigan are the santorum message on life and on guns. this is a pro-gun, pro-life state. is that how the state is split? the suburbs of detroit versus the rest of the state when it comes to republican voters? >>. >> well, the reality is the economy of michigan is something that links everybody together. it's an automotive state. it's a manufacturing state. in many ways there are fewer differences economically between detroit and grand rapids as michigan and any other midwestern state. when it comes down to what's happening in michigan today as a republican, you can look at the primary, and they're all on record being opposed to the auto industry bridge loans, which i trust that's what president obama will call it, and doing that in the primaries. the concern many of us have is what's going to happen in the general election. the president and his team were very smart about this. when i was running about my 15 minutes of blame for president, he was working in manufacturing places in iowa. he was working manufacturing places in ohio. and when you come into the general election and come back to michigan as an individual that was referenced from my home state as a democratic wife and he's upset about mr. romney at the present time, he's going to be upset with the republican nominee on this issue, unless we can get people looking forward to the future of manufacturing, rather than backwards. >> you were somebody that was critical. you support romney now. what others refer to as the auto bailout. >> all four of the current republican nominees have the same on the issue. so for me it was not really a consideration since they were all equivalent. >> are you going to be one of the republicans who think it's inevitable? >> well, i think the justification is newt wants to position himself as the leader of the populous wing of the republican party come 2013. i think he's betting on a obama presidency. that's the thing a lot of republicans will find discomforting. >> stick around. we have a little kid rock coming up after the break. but trivia, we ask correctly this time, who won both the republican and democratic primaries in michigan?
