Many levels it was a great year. 2020 they will be better or worse . Yes, the man for whom. I am optimistic. I think pointed going to be a good year. The Public Sphere is corrupt. And adam bomb has exploded and must come together to stop the worst of the immunity. From happening. It has happened both world war ii, this is another one of those moments. Druglike effect is number one hit in, you think you are just on the platform, interacting with your brand, reading the news. You dont realize this incredible systems are delivering these dopamine food, drinking a behavior. We are trying to live with Bipolar Disorder or burial . Area. Yeah, michael. Denials quite whistle. Three to 4 of the general population has some form of this garner, Bipolar Disorder. According to early one study, except in the one. A lot of skill. No i hate . When people say you are inactive. If you just go and that, shouldnt have appointed me. Really . Im an american first. Im 76 first. My profession is an actor. Im a thinking human being, why should i not have a Point Of View . The navy once again, im stephanie ruhle. And then youre gives us all the chance to get back at the biggest Story Finishes in 2022. And to look ahead at what we can expect next year. It has been a year of january 6th hearings, attacks on our democracy, a whole lot of tech and business shake up. And much more. Through this next hour, we are going to look at some of the most important stories, of some of our favorite guests. I cant think of anybody who i would rather begin with them my dear friend scott galloway. Professor of marketing at nyu school prisoners. For most of the Pivot Podcast and force the prophecy followed and New York Times bustling author. His latest book adrift, america in 100 charges among three. Scott, im so glad you are here. There are so many things we can talk about, i want to start with loneliness. Youve actually been talking about three years. Specifically you did in the book, you and i talked about it a few months ago. Here we are at the end of the. You talked about what this is done two young men, but we are also coming out of covid, theyre in seniors more isolated than ever. Its a problem, not just here, the problem abroad. But oriented uber . Not, there are some scary stuff. One in seven american men say they dont have a single friend. The first time in our nations history, less than 50 of households of america, one of four households, the Person Luminaries living alone. If you look at loneliness, supposedly loneliness in the same smoking 18 cigarettes a day in terms of its impact on your health. Think of this, were in the left 20 or 30 years, we have had 40 to 60 million americans by smoking a pack today. Why . Why did this happen . Because we are racking up facebook friends . , as most of these issues in the multidimensional. People have decided that in many instances, 50 of the Target Market for friends are no longer available because they are so polarized politically. Im a bit guilty of it. I have trouble maintaining friendships with people who want a certain political direction. And i would say young people, you need to separate the person from politics. We are not in as many context around proximity. Not for the, look im going to the, more are going to the movies. A lot of kids are going to school. So we dont have as many random encounters. Also, i think people are generally speaking struggling with covid. And have come out of club and more comfortable being alone. There are all events. Environmental factors, technological factors. Political factors. Its a shame. Because without a connective tissue, the foundation of any societys relationship. The key to happiness across every study is the number of people and meaningful relationship you have. Really is a crisis. We are busy tweeting. You are hyper critical of twitter when jack dorsey ran it, you are headphone critical ability llama. How would you assess where we are now and where you think its going to be six months from now. Its a disaster for shareholders. He spent 45 Billion Dollars on a company that rockefeller 70 or 80 reserve in the. I dont think its demonstrating embrace. The wealthiest man in the world inspiring people and then refusing the pay severance. He is spreading Conspiracy Theories that are somewhat at a minimum a bit homophobic. So i think that this is a lesson in how not to replace yourself when you are as losses elon musk. Is there any chance that part of this is how a mad genius bill The Tech Company . I cant imagine that these jobs will live. He is rebuilding twitter with all of the world to see. While he is sending horrible pieces, hes kind of getting exactly what. Hes gonna pour the keeper fired up and super in age. Many people are forcing, probably the, you are saying people say more fired up than ever on this platform. Who is really leaving as the revenues. The news around 70, 80 . The comcast lost 70 bags and the values in 30 days, prematurely over. Now to your point, its not what hes doing, its how hes done. Trying to move the subscription really, to get the company and, probably the nearly 70,000 people. Theyre trying to move to subscription. There is a law you can justify. Its how he is going about it that i think is the real issue. I mean, the big story i think around twitter wont be twitter so to speak. I think the twitter virus has jumped out of the lab and its going to begin infecting has lost. That is, if you look at the net favor ability scores on kessler, the test brand, they have taken the most dramatic dive i have ever seen of any company that huge crisis. So effectively, tesla at the turn, it was a three and a billion it was a seven footer. Reporter is the virus in my view that is about to Infect Health law. Because anytime you have a car selling for 60 to 120 grand, its about you, little brand, a little says about you. Right now, china tesla says more negative things that you benefit when you fall on last year. How about the whole tech industry. In the sixth . For years and years it seems like it was the one industry that was power hiring. Anyone who could walk. Not just anyone, the smartest kids, from the best school. And suddenly, massive layoffs. What do you attribute this to and you think there will be a Trickle Down Effect into other industries . Going back them up, i think it would be impossible for other ceos not to take notice of the fact that what is up and running with 70 fewer employees. Theyve been cramming some ice cream down the throats of tech, of growth. That there is just a lot of that either positive that have developed. This is the part of the economy that kept on giving. One from 7 gdp 12 . There is some natural downsizing that is going to take place here. But recessions are either bluecollar or whitecollar. In 2023 is going to be the patagonia profession. That is, we are just Getting Started in terms of layoffs in tech. We will see layoffs across i think every major tech company. Heres the weird part. I think next year you are going to see a decline or flowing in revenues of metal angle. But it is going to be the most profitable year ever. Because they are going to look at twitter and think, he can operate on 70 you are employees, you can operate on 20 . Where these people going to go . This is the symphony of the worlds most violent. If youve been laid off from metal or google. You are likely graduated from anomalies, will likely, young living in an urban center where the employment is strong. The Biggest Issue around these individuals from what they are going to do, its what they are going to do. These people are going to be just fine. You know who is not just fine, crystal. Spf. Six months from now, you think Sam Bankmanfried is still living in the bahamas wildly unpopular by a free man who is likely richer than most . Or is he in serious trouble . I think hes going to prison. I dont know what you think, but i think we have hit peak genius interviewer. I would say never a while. But the real lesson here is should be going to prison . Sure. You say the same with a whole bunch of other people who are involved in subprime mortgages. Technically they didnt break the law. You might be in the same situation. I dont know stephanie. I think when you are comingling funds and you are incorporating in the bahamas and not have a Board Of Directors and no audited financial and the equivalent of the population of el paso losing 100,000 for every citizen, there is going to be enough to angry people and enough yays ucla for opportunity and putting him in jail. What about those who are incensed by protesting. All the politicians that have huge donations who are members now . All of the huge investors that he had are standing by him just months ago, they want to see him go up in flames or they just want to storms here . I think theyre incentivized to say that they saw before anybody else. You have the has, the two major figures going to prison. They both incense. The head of nicola motors. What is interesting, he brought up the subprime prices, that actually impacted the economy, came close to being down the global economy. The Crypto Market at some higher billion dollars in value is less value than amazon has shed. So the difference there is that the subprime market, huge impact on the economy, and we want to present. I believe this meltdown will result in several people going to prison but is basically imagining the windshield of our economy. It is more practical than it is significant. What you see happening with tiptop in 2023 . We are starting to see lawmakers, starting to see governors say that we do not want this in our state. We dont want this on our government computers. Weve been warning of the top. About how effective it was months ago. Where is it headed at least in the u. S. . There is worth headed and where should happen. What should happen is that it should be banned. The chinese and ccp have control over every streaming network in america, which they do right now in terms of time spent, is under the age of 18 spend what time on tiktok and every streaming media platform combined. Would be comfortable if this station abc, isnt, all owned by the ccp, we say no. It should be banned. What will happen is that tiktok will become worth over a trillion dollars. Gen z and millennials 63 and 54 respectively say they would rather have caught them all other media combined. Give everybody from General Atlantic instead going back in this. It is the most ascended had company in history. They will figure out a deal. And we are about to see bytedance become the fourth most valuable company in the world. Now. If you were to describe 2023 and one were, what would it be . Lori was inflation but optimistically, two words, democracy holden. Large democracy in latin america, peaceful transfer of power. He flirted with a top russian decided we didnt like dating that guy or gal. Our democracy is holding here, with every Election Denier was not reelected. Trumps endorsement took two and a half point off. I think actually 2022, despite inflation, typical environment in eastern europe. I think for america on many levels, it was a great. 2023 will be better or worse . Yes. The pendulum for whom. Im optimistic, i think we will hopefully see an end to the one ukraine. Because i think we are winning there without putting boots on the ground. I think inflation will come back this facet went up in the u. S. The strength of the dollar. The ongoing thing of the supply chain, Interest Rate increases which i think in the right thing to do. A recognition that no individual is greater than agree to shuns on america. And i would like to think that a recognition we are fortunate to be here. Middle class is important. Our institutions matter. And that these individuals that we want to worshippers they understand technology, that that has gotten out of hand. I think 24 degrees going to be a video. All right, stop, great to have you here. Liberty Liberty Liberty liberty we have talked a lot about this from the other. And the impact social media has become an inescapable reality for many others. Affecting everything from our politics to our brains. Earlier this year, i had a chance to speak with max fisher about the dangers of these platforms. He is the author of the chaos machine, inside story of how social media we wired our minds and our world. You know these Platforms Radicalize people. We know that we are addicted. But how serious is it . We now know, what is new and what is in this book, i spent 45 years straight, as we finally have hard scientist Empirical Evidence that it is changing your nature. If you are on the platform. And its easy to think it changes your brain . It changes your brain chemistry. Because that is part of the addictive function deliberately designed into. It changes your emotional makeup. The emotions that you feel, that is when youre, i put all the time. People in your office. Violence and social media. Changes the way you think about your identity. The place of your identity in the world. Makes you more distrustful, antagonistic was. Changes your sense of randall. When you judge what is more and more. Distorted by the platform. Not something unsettled to do, but something that they had evidence that they were going to be doing. And now we can actually show how about that work. It might not be what they set out to do, is what they are doing and they are not stop. But what is going to change the . We are addicted, we are not changing our behavior. The government hasnt regulated anything and these companies are making billions of dollars. So what will be the catalyst to change things . I think there is a top down any bottom up answer. Both of these, i think a lot of it have to do with a mental shift in understanding that these are the cigarette companies. Theyre selling a product that is addictive. That is baked into their business model. It cannot be engineered out of their business model. He some lawmakers are senators. Starting to see that it is not a make this tweet enforce this moderation policy better, but confronting these companies. Something that is deliberately distorting us in ways that are not healthy. The bottom of the answer, when i ask all the time. I think is actually a little bit more incurred. That once you start to see the druglike effect it had on you, if you were anything like the media in america, spent a couple hours a day on the social platform, understanding the way that alcohol might affect you, once you understand your coffee affects your. It becomes easier to control for that effect. Understand and differentiate when something is being done because you want to do, or because the bottom has changed to do it. And to understand when you can economically safely. Maybe, like with any water to be what will be most responsible for. Are you on social media . I am. Hard not to be. The hold on, all you believe the fires, all you just told me, but still yeah, likely . Crazy. It is crazy. Theyve successfully dominated our discourse, the way that we continue. I am on maybe 95 less than a year today. And i use it completely differently. Again, understanding like a drug is high that so that you do not realize you are taking this drug. Every time we open this platform. Which for most americans as a couple thousand times their. Instead to treat it like drug, maybe you only take it once or twice a day. In a controlled circumstance very carefully. How i use now as opposed to all of the time. Okay, here is what is different people comedienne drugs, and, also got. They are all highly regulated. , that is right. And it is hard to make that shift the social media because the drug like that and one, its hidden. If you think you are just on the platform and interacting with friends, three minutes. You do not realize the incredible powerful systems are deliberately still, changing behavior and to test drive like effect changes your social behavior. Or is it tough because there is no political will to do so because of the lobbying dollars of these companies. Pregnant women still love smoking cigarettes entering into the government said here are the red. It is a big top downshift in regulation. Its a big cultural attitude, between what we consider you know, a lot of people went from thinking it was okay to smoke when you are for example pregnant, you think you should not be the. That change in social norms around cigarettes had a big effect. Nothing has to be both how we think about social media. Lawmakers. A lot . Not, enough people. , thank you for joining. Appreciate it. Lets deal with it, let us deal with it and boardrooms, in bedrooms. And in rooms, hopefully was a trained psychologists and let us not assume that you need to have these issues and not be dealing with them to be successful. We need to disclose, we need to create a culture both in the zeitgeist as a society. The Business World in particular, where is most closeted. When did you disclose it . My colleagues did not know until i had a catastrophic. What really was a fourth manic episode. But the second that being hospitalized, i spent a weekend bellevue here New York City. And i finally felt like okay, im ready to deal with this. Im ready to take the medication. And i walked out in handcuffs, charged by nypd with felony misdemeanor assault. Called the office and said we are . So not easy to make a call from value. You dont have access to your cell phone. There is a payphone and the only phone call i made while i was there, other than to family was to one particular called my sister to say hey, we might need a lawyer. Ive just gotten word from the psychiatrist that the authorities might want to talk to me on the way out. That was when i began to put it together that i had been violent during the manic episode. You dont even know . Except i saw my girlfriend on the third or fourth or visit had a little bit of a black eye. She came to see . Yeah, she came to see me, i didnt notice that the first few times she came. And then as i was coming back, i saw it and said did i hear you . She said something like, it didnt hurt, youve got a weak punch. Get out of town. She made a joke, but for me it was like a noose to the sky to know that, here is this person i loved and that had happened because i had this illness not under control. If there is one thing that you want people to know about your book, your journey, you. You wrote this book to put yourself out there, would you want them to know . Want to say how affirming it has been to put it out. Not of love and acceptance and affirmation. And i dont mean to say that all will be the same for everyone, but i think that we are ready. As a society to have this conversation. And its a non partisan issue that affects everyone. It is universal. It is universally under discussed. And so i think that we should all acknowledge that there is so much power in our barn or ability. And that this type of disclosure hopefully more often than not invites people in versus sends them away. You mentioned partisanship, so much of our divide is about anger and hate. You put yourself out there in, is that what we are missing . I think so, i think we need to have more conversations that in my empathy and i think that when it comes to sharing our struggles, people lean in because we are all struggling sometimes . Arent wes . Back in the 70s, Henry Winkler was the our konak arthur fonds rally, known as the fonds on happy days. Then, the countless movies and tv shows we have loved him in. Parts like coach klein and the water boy. Now he is known as acting teacher jeanne cuccinelli on hbos Popular Series barry. Back in june, i got a chance to sit down with the legendary Award Winning actor, producer, director, author and humanitarian. Here are some of our conversations. I am your superfan, and i am so honored you are here. So many things i want to talk about but i have to start with gene. Okay jeanne. This character. He is a washed up, Very Vein Acting teacher. In bill hader chose you for this part. What do you think about that . It was an amazing thing. Because i got a call as i was leaving an Estate Planning meeting, which i did not understand at all. And they said you dont know to stay planning . Is i knew it was. What are you going to do it in many juanita . Yes, i dont know. And then i got a call and that bill hader, wanted to meet me for it in hbo. Hbo project and here we are. Finishing the third season this coming sunday. What amazes, me not just about this character, it is as though every generation knows you as a different character. I didnt even mention bury the Defense Attorney on arrested development. Each of these coworkers are so different but they shows have caught like followings. Iconic. Why . Because if it is not on the page, it is not on the stage and i have had the pleasure of working with extraordinary writers. And that is where it begins. The writer is the beginning in the end of whatever the entertainment is. But so many of these characters are not the starring role, they are supporting characters that youve have made iconic. How . I am not sure. Im not sure. Who i get a par and i am so happy. And then they write wonderful things that i get to do. I listen to the director and go on the journey. Honestly. Do you have a favorite . No i dont. Because everyone i do, this is, this is the best thing ive ever done. No, here it comes. Now im doing this. This is the best thing ive ever. Dumb gratitude is the beginning and end of my life. Wow, explain that. I believe in tenacity and gratitude. Gratitude allows you to get where you want to go. Tenacity gets you there. Are you always a positive person . Im mostly a positive person. I would say 98 of the time. There are so many reasons why i wanted to talk to you today, but one that hits me personally is dyslexia. I am dyslexic, two of my children are. I did not know i was until i was an adult. How tell me about your journey. Because you did not know when you are a student. I did not. They did not know that, anything about dyslexia at the time i was going up. In the early 18 80s. What kind of student where you . Im in the bottom 3 academic in america. But what i fault is that they did not see me. They didnt ceo, here is a young fellow who has a problem. They just told me that i was stupid. Is that why you wrote this Childrens Book series . Believe are not kids just think they are down. For me, i cheated and lied and happy against my way through it. Then when i was diagnosed, i went oh, that is what it always was. You learn to negotiate your own Learning Challenge in one out of six on this earth as a Learning Challenge. But, i wrote the books and they were a time filler. I was not getting hired as an actor, so somebody said write about your Learning Challenge for children. I couldnt do that. I have written 39 novels, so i learned that you never say that you cant do something. Then as a dyslexic, how did you handle scripts . Because there are so many undiagnosed dyslexics. The mayor of New York City was just talking, 30 to 40 of people in prison in new york or undiagnosed dyslexics. Did you know that they decide how many prison cells they are going to build by tests from the third grade . You are kidding . No. So how big of a part is dyslexia in your identity . It is everything. Because in the beginning, you think that you are stupid. You are told you are stupid. You buy that you are stupid. And it takes the journey i woke up one day, but in my late 40s. I went, you know, i dont think i am stupid. But it takes a while. You keep, i am not going to say reinventing your career, but have taken so many turns. You are a tiktok star. Your 12yearold Grand Daughter produces you took top content. How did you decide im going to talk to them . Because my Grand Daughter said that papa, you have to be on tiktok. She then curated the music. I love to dance. So i figured out the steps. She put the camera where it needs to be. And the last one i made was for my six month old Grand Daughter and i wrote her the apple song. Do you say yes to everything . No, but i love my life. I love being on this earth. Somebody said yes to you 44 years ago. Your wife stacey. What is your secret to marriage . I think that will. I think listening and i think accepting who is in front of you. Because there is no perfection. I am not a complete levy wonderful human being. But i try. And stacey accepts the try. You are talking about a lot of light, but you also talk about a decent one of dark on. Talking about politics. In 2012, you are on this network and were talking about some republicans. And you are saying, theyve got a problem. The outrageous where they becoming, what are they doing . That was ten years ago. Here it is. If everybody just wants to win. And they go towards autocracy.
