jesse kirsch is in highland park for us reporting live. thanks for being there. i remember when this story broke exactly a year ago. i happened to be on air. it was like all of these mass shootings are. pure pandemonium. what was different here of course was that this is a small town. we did not expect it. doesn't fit any of those constructs. what was the mood today to try to get past what happened a year ago? >> reporter: yeah, so i think that's the key of it right there, richard, at the end you were talking about getting past it. i think today seems to be about defiance in a sense. they're memorializing, remembering, but they're also not going to allow this, they say, the community leaders, let the events of last year define this community. they want children to have the fireworks. they're doing a drone show
